It’s been a couple of months since my last update. In the interim, I dealt with work, computer problems, financial issues, and the typical headaches that come with being lorded over by morons. You know, the usual. I’m still recovering from Covid as I type this but am on the track to recovery. By now, I’m just doing this to help me pass the time.
i am finally done with the routing of the world and will now be working on the finer details such as filling the empty lots with trees, adding spawners, and finishing the lots wherever the settlements may be. So far, the island has one large settlement, pictured above. I plan to make a few more inner-island villages, including one that basically acts as a pirate stronghold.
I can’t make any promises of when it would be ready for testing, though.

LGR - The Sims 4 For Rent Review
Dang.
EA strikes again.
What absolutely sucks is that having a Southeast Asian world sounds amazing, but WTF about that screams Ah yes! Duplexes! Like...WHY?
Especially since 2/3 of their city worlds have been tropical Asian worlds, but they have YET to make the Neon Cyberpunk Metropolis I’ve been sitting here waiting for since like 2012. 😒

New Seasons = New Packs
The roadmap for the next 3 months (Sep - Dec) of sims content was revealed on the latest episode of "Behind The Sims" yesterday.
EMBRACE THE HUSTLE & BUSTLE 🍕 One Tasty Stuff Pack 🍕 One Neighborly Expansion Pack 🍕 and more!
A very surprising return of the stuff packs! We already know that this tasty one is called Home Chef Hustle. I've shared the official screen shots and info right here.
And another EP this year! The Pad thai and tea pot suggests we might be looking forward to a southeast asian pack. Possibly another city pack with apartments?

My Current Sims 3 Project
So I've been posting for a while now but I don't think I've properly explained what I'm aiming to do.
I'm renovating a set of small (512x512) custom worlds to act as sub-neighborhoods of a larger city-state like Singapore.
Why am I doing this? Small worlds load much faster. I've cut down my save loading time to less than two minutes on a very dense if small world. Having multiple sub-neighborhoods allows me to spread my gameplay across different environments using the NRAAS traveler mod while controlling lag.
Also, as I'm building a city-state based Asian cities like Singapore, I've been careful to create my own population that matches the locale. I've always been frustrated with how sims with the Asian culture trait were portrayed in World Adventures and have been creating a diverse (read: mostly East, South, and Southeast Asian plus a few other races as expats) Sims 3 population for my neighborhoods.
Fingers crossed this works out.

I did a major overhaul of the editable Isla Paradiso copy I had, stripping it not only of nonnative flora (which I also did for the latest copy of San Simeon) but also removed roads and pretty much every sign of a Spanish presence in the island. It’s far from pristine, though, since I left in the paths. In any case, I’ve created a draft blank world called Kedatuan that, while currently themed for Southeast Asia, could work for any pre-contact Tropical region with a few swaps of vegetation.
And, as always, I start by building a home fit for a king. Behold, the Rajah’s palace, given a more weathered look. I may change the tone of the actual palace if it suits me, but for now, it’s fine the way it is.
Still not sure if I’m okay with the scale though. It seems a bit too big.

On the 'Hotter Than Hot' MLQC event
my internal monologue: val don't do it don't do it don't-- nO IM GONNA DO IT
I'm sure most of the MLQC side of Tumblr has seen the recent CN server karmas for the newest event, 'Hotter Than Hot', and we all had a similar reaction: the art is breathtakingly gorgeous. But personally, one of my first thoughts on seeing the karma images was also: umm Papergames what's up with the cultural appropriation!?! If you haven't seen the karmas, MC and the suitors are dressed up in clothing reminiscent of Aladdin or 1001 Nights: a Frankenstein-ed approximation of Southeast Asian/Middle Eastern cultural clothing that is extremely revealing, both for MC and for the suitors. And I could go on for. Quite a while. About why cultural appropriation, generally speaking, is wrong, but for this case in particular, I'm going to just briefly touch on a couple of points. Firstly, cultural appropriation, in this context, is an outsider (Papergames) taking symbols, art, and images from a culture, in this case, specifically attire and imagery from Middle Eastern culture ('Middle Eastern culture' already being a vast overgeneralization). Secondly, the way Papergames has chosen to portray Middle Eastern culture plays into many stereotypes about the culture: full of “Arabian nights,” “sheiks and sultans,” and "veils, harem girls, and belly dancers." The problem with this, specifically in the last stereotype, is regarding how MC and the suitors are dressed in revealing "exotic" clothing meant to symbolize Middle Eastern culture or capture the aesthetic of it. This, coupled with the event's name 'Hotter Than Hot,' feels like Papergames is just contributing to the sexualization of Middle Eastern culture by playing into tropes/incorrect beliefs/assumptions we have about the culture: making it about the sex appeal, the magic and jewels, and how foreign and different it is from our normal setting. In this way, no longer is the Middle East just another place for the MLQC story to land in, but a thrilling new world, full of romance, adventure, and sexual fantasy. What this does to the culture itself is that it, by telling a single narrative about the culture, minimizes the lived experience of people who are a part of this culture. If all we know about the Middle East is 1001 Nights or Aladdin or Bluebeard, we might look at a Muslim girl wearing a hijab and think of her as part of a 'backwards' culture (barbarous, misogynistic, and in every way, Other) rather than stopping and taking the time to listen to her, to first hear her story from her mouth, not born from our assumptions formed through stereotypes in the media we consume. The point I'm trying to make here, in this long and roundabout way, though, is that Papergames didn't care about Middle Eastern culture when they decided to make this event, no matter how culturally nuanced the dates end up being (if at all). They knew what they were doing when they used the Exotic Middle Eastern Aesthetic to create the karma art for this event: since MLQC is a dating sim, they know the easiest way to make a profit is through people paying for karmas, especially karmas with MC and the suitors in revealing clothing and/or in suggestive positions! And Papergames has been pushing the limits with how suggestive they can be with the game's rating, only they had to censor MC's legs and cleavage in their recent Valentine's Day karmas. So, honestly, what it feels like to me here is that they just turned around to use the Middle Eastern Aesthetic to continue to profit off of putting MC and the suitors in revealing outfits (and possibly suggestive scenarios, but since the dates aren't translated yet, so this one's a maybe). This is just a corporation choosing to borrow from a culture purely for the purpose of selling it in this sexualized fashion, which just reinforces harmful stereotypes about the culture, as well as ignoring the nuances of the culture itself and the hardships individuals might go through because of their culture, whether from within, or because of these stereotypes and the prejudices that stem from them. anyways here's a few good reads + a video on cultural appropriation,
orientalism, and stereotypes about muslim/middle eastern culture <3 someone pls translate them and send them papergames' way: http://reappropriate.co/2014/04/what-is-orientalism-and-how-is-it-also-racism/ https://yallaletstalk.com/on-appropriation-vs-appreciation-of-arabic-culture/ http://arabstereotypes.org/why-stereotypes/what-orientalism/veils-harems-belly-dancers https://muslimgirl.com/the-problem-with-being-told-wow-you-look-so-exotic/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddCJPtcxEwo

All the lots have been placed. Now comes the terraforming. I’ve a few bits of terrain to fix and a lot of landscaping to do before I resume building houses. The lots I placed in will also serve as the foundation for the re-make of San Simeon.

Thoughts on Worldbuilding: Storytelling with Geography: Lunar Lakes
So I've been thinking about worldbuilding for awhile, and one of the things that I like about certain worlds is that they tell a story with their geography. I think Lunar Lakes is one of these worlds.
Tumblr media
Image: An overview of Lunar Lakes from Sims 3
All Lunar Lake images will be from here
This is going to draw from James C. Scott's The Art of Not Being Governed and the concept of Zomia
Tumblr media
So one of the central concepts behind Zomia and The Art is the idea that not everybody wants to be a part of centralized governments or nation-states.
Traditionally, most academic fields have held that as societies centralize around agricultural centers that evolve into urban centers, they draw everybody to them through some kind of unexplained magnetism as they gradually expand. It's usually held that this is because the centralizing power of agriculture allows for population booms not supported by hunting-and-gathering. At least one philosopher <cough> Daniel Quinn <cough>1 this is a result of these populations controlling access to food. Not just surpluses of food, but access to food at all, forcing those within their borders to join the system or die.
This idea that agricultural societies are somehow fundamentally better. We see this reflected in different cultural evolution models (all of which are horribly racist but still manage to hang on in weird places, particularly developmental models). As such, the shift from hunting-and-gathering to sedentary agriculture tends to be heralded as a good thing in most history text books and is pretty much always seen as a step towards "modernization.2" But what if you don't want that? What if you have zero interest in joining the agricultural community and implied state control?3 What options do you have then?
You, then, may be interested in Zomia or one of the other extra-territorial spaces that function similarly.
Tumblr media
Image: A village in the mountains
So what is Zomia? Zomia encompasses a large territory that ranges across Southeast Asia up into Tibet. Its primary defining feature is its rugged terrain and various populations that have no interest in different state-sponsored "civilizing" projects. While different agricultural centers expand outward to fill the lowland regions seeking to bully those they encounter along the way into joining, various people along the way say "f*ck it" and go up into the mountains. Why? Because the rugged terrain makes it harder for their valley-based neighbors to control them while providing plenty of hiding places push back against their expansion.
Tumblr media
Image: A map of the Zomia area highlighting the Southeast Asian and Himalayan Massifs, areas encompassing the geography of Zomia itself.
Agriculture tends to lock people into place and makes them easier to control, therefore nation-states interested in keeping track of large populations have a vested interest in convincing people to farm. Buggering off into the mountains offsets this. Agriculture isn't necessarily harder in these mountainous areas4, but you do have different crops as a result of altitudinal zonation and a fair amount of people choose to engage in animal husbandry instead because the high altitudes impact calorie consumption as your body spends more energy keeping you warm.
This impacts cultures in these regions as well. People may choose to define themselves in opposition to the lowland culture they are avoiding. They may hybridize with cultures already in the mountains, create new languages, or define themselves by the fact they are there for political or semi-political reasons and expressly avoiding the control of an outside party, even if that outside party is the nation-state they are legally considered a part of. There is also a tendency of these cultures to discard literacy for orality, in part because orality is easier to carry around and in part because it marks them as Other compared to their lowland counterparts. It also gives you a since of control over your culture itself, as orality can't be shared unless you want it to whereas almost anyone can learn a writing system and open a book.
So what's this got to do with Lunar Lakes? Let's look at LL more closely, shall we?
Tumblr media
Image: The downtown region from Lunar Lakes
The most densely developed part of Lunar Lakes is easily this "downtown" district in the lowlands region. This area contains most of the community lots for the world, and, most tellingly, City Hall and the Perigee, which we're told in the original blurb brought the (human) sims to Lunar Lakes to begin with.
Tumblr media
Image: The Rim
There is a little bleed over of rabbitholes from the city center onto the Rim, a slightly elevated area just above it, but these are no where near as "mountainous" as the craters we'll get to in a minute.
Tumblr media
Image: The Canals
Another defining feature of the lowland central area are these canals. As these canals do not extend to a beach or other waterway, they can't be for trade, thereby lending themselves to the idea that they are intended for agricultural uses. They could, of course, predate the colony, but that doesn't change the intent.
Tumblr media
Image: The Crystal Mine, the Outpost, and the Depot
On the backside of the craters, we have the Crystal Mine, the Outpost, and the Depot. We're told in the original backstory blurb for the world on the Store page that the residents had to harness the crystals to to make their colony sustainable, but it feels abandoned now. Given the importance of the mine in the early days of the colony, it makes sense they'd have a transport depot here for the workers and an outpost, possibly for the military, to protect it, especially if the world was inhabited and the indigenous people wanted nothing to do with them or actively apposed them.
Tumblr media
Image: The Craters from Lunar Lakes
Which brings us finally to the craters themselves. Here's where Zomia comes in. If Lunar Lakes was inhabited and if the native population had no interest in joining the colonists or being exploited by them, where would they go? The craters, of course! This would also hold true for anyone who didn't want to fall in line with the colonial leadership among the human sims themselves. We know the Louie family, for example, had to move to the craters after they were exiled by Patricia Cross, the current colonial leader. It therefore stands to reason that, even if the people who live here are colonists, this is where they are expected to go if they are exiled or want to get away from the political milieu of the central powers in the downtown district.
Tumblr media
Image: Suburban Subspace lot from Lunar Lakes
And, of course, architecturally, this is where we got those distinctive mushroom houses, which again, suggests an alternative development of this region compared to the lowlands even if the people here are exiled colonists, deviants, etc.
Regardless, we end up with a setting that is rife for internal worldbuilding and storytelling based on its geography. If you add an alien population seeking to escape SimEarth colonization by fleeing to the craters, it establishes a political backdrop for stories, making the world feel more lived in and providing a ready-made backstory. This is one of the things I think is drastically missing in the Sims 4 with their itty-bitty neighborhoods and lack of connecting spaces.
Anyways, these are the things I think about when worldbuilding myself. What story does my world tell geographically? Does it have a built in backstory represented by its geography? Are the different regions/neighborhoods connected in a way that makes cohesive sense? Are their other worlds you think do a good job of storytelling with their designs?
If you build worlds, do you take into account the storytelling potential of your geography? Why or why not? If you play in worlds like Lunar Lakes, does the geography inform your storytelling? Does it help build a metadiscourse around your game? Are there other worlds that inspire your gameplay with their layouts?
Edited in response to @nornities excellent feedback.
1) This is not meant as an endorsement of all of Quinn's arguments; he's got a weird overpopulation theory built into his writing that's a little too close to Malthusian for my liking, but I'm not one to throw out the baby with the bathwater, as it were.
2) Ever notice how "modernization" and "development" are always fundamentally anchored in how Europe moved from feudalism to imperialism to democracy etc.? Yeah, that's the remnants of that "cultural evolution" model I'm talking about. "You're not successful until you look like us!" "Take these developmental loans from the World Bank or the IMF! We promise the strings attached are for your benefit too!" "What do you mean you want to skip industrialization and natural resource extraction and invest in your environment, happiness, and long-term sustainability? You'll never be like us that way! You're a failed state! Ignore the coup in the background we swear we had nothing to do with!"
3) This is the section that was edited after @nornities pointed out that it could be read to imply that non-agricultural societies don't have taxes, class warfare, epidemics, subjugation, slavery, conscription, etc. That was not the intention, although it is clearly stated in Scott's original work that he considers these and other negative societal effects to be the direct result of such "civilizing projects." It was not my intent to perpetuate that idea as these things do happen in non-agricultural societies, so I have changed the original wording. Thank you, @nornities
4) I also forgot to mention the clear exception to this: the Incan Empire. Unlike most empire models, the Inca engaged in a top-down society (literally) that was based in the mountains and expanded downward and outward over time. They were predated by two earlier Andean civilizations.

Since you asked for more questions
I have some!
About you:
How old are you?
Where are you from?
What do you like to do in your free time?(besides playing the Sims )
Do you watch anime? If yes what's your favorite?
Do you listen to Kpop? If yes, which groups do you like?
What are your favorite expansion packs for the Sims 3?
About your sims:
Where do you get skins for asian people?
Do you have any tutorials on how to create poses? If no could you make one( I'm asking cuz I remember you had answered me in a previous question of mine that you create your own sim poses)
What's your favorite sim you've made?
Have you ever considered playing medieval(not the Sims Medieval but the Sims 3 in a medieval world, a medieval setting and medieval CC)?
Love your account!
Yes, thank you!
Okay, lots of answers below.
About Me:
How old are you? I am 24.
Where are you from? I’m from the east coast of the U.S.
What do you like to do in your free time (besides playing the Sims)? I dance, I like to read, I play D&D and I’m very invested in fashion and makeup.
Do you watch anime? If yes what's your favorite? Nope. I have never really been into animation of any kind. (I don’t like cartoons either).
Do you listen to Kpop? If yes, which groups do you like? Yes, my favorite group is KARD.
What are your favorite expansion packs for the Sims 3? You know, I don’t really have one because I haven’t truly played the game in years. Whenever I’m asked this though, I generally say Late Night because it added a lot of new object types and that city/urban feel that lent itself to new cc really well.
About My Sims:
Where do you get skins for asian people? Unfortunately, this is one of the holes in the sims 3 cc community. We are at a point right now where, in the last couple of years, we have started getting really good HQ skins for people of color finally, but most of those skins are catered more towards Black features. Now, there are two Asian skins that I have used for years in the past: Starfruit Epicanthic and another I will link below, but both of them are 1k skins and lean more towards east Asian, not really southeast or Pacific Islander (but you can work with them).  At the moment, there really aren’t any HQ Asian skins for download. If you want that, you’re going to have to skinblend and pull some of the defining features from a real model/image, but you can still use the textures from other existing skins for the rest of the body and things that aren’t the defining features.  [ Starfruit epicanthic (unisex) Here.  Then a skin here that is for males.]
Do you have any tutorials on how to create poses? If no could you make one( I'm asking cuz I remember you had answered me in a previous question of mine that you create your own sim poses) I learned using @kaleekalo ‘s pose creation tutorials. The first you can find here. Those will get you through the basics and the rest is just practice.
What's your favorite sim you've made? 🤔 I don’t believe I have one. I’ve never been one to rank/appoint favorites of things.
Have you ever considered playing medieval(not the Sims Medieval but the Sims 3 in a medieval world, a medieval setting and medieval CC)? Absolutely and I do. I have a medieval fantasy story called Ghilandrest which you can find here.  And then I also have a vikings story which you can find here.  Now both of these haven’t been updated in years, but I have not abandoned them. I have over 50 OCs and I have so many ideas and interests and not enough time, so whatever I’m predominantly interested in at the moment is what takes precedence. What also factors in is that for a lot of characters and stories that I want to do I have to build so many sets and make so many poses and fix so many sims before you’ll ever see anything from them (and because I have so many sims, by the time I get around to being interested in one of those stories again my skills have improved so then I have to redo all the sims and skins before I can take pictures again 🙃). Hopefully one day soon you’ll see something from the Vikings story, because I have plans.
Thanks again for the questions! Anyone can ask me questions like this. I also really love questions about my characters and the lore I create (I’ll never stop talking 😂) so feel free!

If you had a time machine, would you go back in time or visit the future? Probably the future, considering y’know, history lol
Do I get asks? These days yeah. I’d only get an ask occasionally a few months ago lol
Following: 178 (I keep a tight circle)
Would you rather be rich or famous? If I had  to choose rich, but it would be nice to be that type of famous where you have like a very niche following of people so you can live in relative peace lol
Amount of sleep: I typically get about 6-7 hours
What I’m wearing: Pajamas since it Saturday afternoon
Dream job: I would LOVE to be paid to write for a tv series or films
Dream trip: Definitely want to travel around the Caribbean and visit a few different island in Hawaii. Also Japan, Australia, and South Africa
If you were an animal. What would you be? I’m 1000% sure I was some type of cat in a past life
What are some of your favourite books/films/shows/games/etc.?
Books: Like I’ve said before, huge HP fan lol, I also love this series by Rachel Mead called A Great and Terrible Beauty (great trilogy for anyone who loves historical fiction AND magic AND sapphic vibes lol). Ooooh and I stumbled upon this little series by C.B. Lee called Not Your Side Kick (features a southeast asian queer girl in a post apocalyptic semi-America with superheros, that’s a mouthful I know lmao). The art included in the book is so pretty and its such a cute series that pokes fun at comic book tropes. I’ve got some more but I’ll stop here lol
Films: I have weird taste so be prepared for this to be all over the place lol. Ex Machina, Moana, Mulan, Coco, Inception, Moulin Rouge, Memoirs of a Geisha, Coming to America, that’s all I can think of off the top of my head
Shows: I watch much less TV now, but I still got some things that I tune in for. The Good Place, Community, Parks and Rec, The Office, Gilmore Girls, Steven Universe, Adventure Time, and some shows that are a little older but mean a lot to me Avatar the Last Airbender, As Told by Ginger, Rugrats, Sister Sister
Games: Obvious I mostly play Sims 4 now, but I also loved Sims 3, and games I’ve played when I need to take a break are Cook, Serve, Delicious, Stellaris, and Stardew Valley
Play any instruments? I played violin for a while as a kid and in my senior year of high school. I’m also a little self taught on piano and have “played” my ukelele maybe twice lol
Language(s): English, but I studied Japanese in high school and college (I’ve lost most of it)
Describe yourself as aesthetic: Think the final glimpses of the sun before it sets, fireflies, warm breezes, the taste of pineapple, apples and cinnamon on a fall evening, chunky knit sweaters, and rose gold jewelry
As per usual, I’m real late to this tag so I won’t tag anyone in particular, but if you see this and want to do it, tag you’re it!
