so like, there was definitely a point in the beginning of the book where Jonathan didn’t necessarily think there was anything supernatural going on, but he did know SOMETHING was very wrong about the situation. What do you think his working theory was? Let’s consider the facts up until the mirror incident:
Dozens of people are very concerned for his wellbeing upon learning where he’s headed, and although he thinks it’s superstition, even he admits this is “not very pleasant for me, just starting for an unknown place to meet an unknown man.” So he can at least acknowledge that it’s looking kinda sketchy.
The disorienting carriage ride taking him in circles for hours. Like this is literally something I’ve seen in mob movies and abduction plot lines and heard about in real life.
(The blue flames and even controlling wolves is not entirely unreasonable. St. Elmo’s Fire is a thing and I can imagine someone normal having a way to repel wolves or make them go away.)
The fact that Dracula disguised himself as the coachman and initially puts up a front of having unseen servants who are just not available, thus trying to deceive Jonathan into thinking that they’re totally not alone here (I have servants they just go to another school you wouldn’t know them)
So if a guy who’s spoken about fearfully by dozens of locals takes me on a carriage ride deliberately intended to confuse me, and then goes out of his way to make it seem like we’re not alone together….I’m definitely thinking serial killer. Possibly with a little bit of Talented Mr. Ripley sprinkled in. Both of which are technically not wrong!

Obsessed with the x files episodes where like someone will go missing and they’ll go to the victim’s last known location and see like a normal ant crawling around and mulder will go “I think the victim was kidnapped by two hundred ants disguised as a human being who took the victim because they need to digest organic matter in order to have the strength to build a giant anthill” and scully will go “that’s insane” but mulder will literally be right beat for beat

I had an interview with a local paper this week about this rock snake I started on the longest street of a nearby city (where I work) because it's bringing people so much joy:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I said something during the interview that the interviewer seemed really shocked by, so in case it's important for anyone else to hear: When asked about the rock snake and some scavenger hunts that I've hosted for adults, I said -
"We don't stop enjoying the things we liked as kids; they just stop being offered to us. And when you're a kid, fun things like art projects and scavenger hunts are always brought to you, so you're not taught to make a habit of seeking them out as and adult."
She said "Wow yeah... life is so stressful... and you don't think to... wow."
So if anyone else needs direct permission to be a whimsical adult child today, I hereby grant it to everyone. ❤️

This is honestly still so shocking to me. As a California lawyer, I feel like it's difficult to understate the impact of John Eastman's fall.
Before Trump, John Eastman was a fixture of the California legal community. He was the Dean of Chapman University's law school for years. He was regularly interviewed in local media to get the conservative legal viewpoint, and even though I almost always disagreed with his positions, his reasoning was usually cogent and thoughtful. He clerked for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas for fuck's sake (this is not a thing that stupid, sloppy, or thoughtless people can achieve or do--you can have bad and seriously wrong opinions, sure, but you can't be thoughtless).
I swear though, it sometimes feels like the entire conservative base has been captured by some kind of mania. He continues to insist that his prosecution is politically motivated. Even as his own witnesses collapsed on the lies he continues to peddle:
Testifying in Eastman’s defense was Michael Gableman, a former Wisconsin Supreme Court justice who has stated the election was stolen. But at the trial, Gableman admitted that his own 14-month inquiry into the election failed to prove that fraud cost Trump the election.
Another Eastman witness, John Yoo, a longtime friend and a Berkeley Law professor, testified that Joe Biden had won the White House “fair and square” and that Pence had “unassailable grounds” in refusing to reject electoral votes.
I mean, I guess at this point he just has to go all in on the lie. He allegedly says that his legal fees are going to cost him between $3 to $3.5 million and he's raised something like $500k for his legal defense.
But this doesn't sound like someone who is lying. It sounds like someone in a fucking cult:
[Eastman] said the bar trial was “extraordinary and unprecedented” but gave him a chance to present wider evidence of election fraud than had been previously aired. “It was eye-opening for a lot of people about the amount of illegality that we exposed during that trial,” Eastman said.
My dude, the Judge issued a 128 page ruling that found you guilty of 10 out of 11 counts of misconduct. Exactly what did you expose except your own ass?
Eastman portrays himself as a battling patriot who has been subjected to “false narratives and calumnies.” He said he is the victim of “lawfare,” an attempt to silence unpopular views with legal machinery.
“We are in a rather significant fight, and for whatever reason, I am the lead point of the spear in that fight, and I am taking it on, as I think my duty as a citizen requires,” he said. “We’ll do what it takes.”
My god, someone needs to fucking deprogram this guy.
Anyhow, this continues to be insane to me.

General tumblr reminder, since some people don't know: If the person's URL has "deactivated" plus a string of numbers (a date) after it, that means that they manually deleted their own blog. It doesn't mean they were banned. Banned blogs don't have "deactivated" after them and will just be the normal URL you can't click on or interact with. They look very similar and function the same, but they were caused by two very different things.

TIL the reason this inconsistently shows up in notes for the same post is bc if you look at the notes from a reblog, replies from ppl blocked by the reblogger don’t show up but if you look at it from someone else like OP they do show up

When I was little my mom’s meatloaf was my favorite food. But ONLY her meatloaf. I didn’t like anyone else’s, and she told me that she would teach me how to make it when I was older. And when I was like 19? She finally taught me, but she told me never to tell anyone else and I was like weird but okay
Anyway, she was super fucking homophobic and abusive to me when I told her I was gay, so here’s the recipe
4-6 lbs of Hamburger/turkey burger
1 pk onion soup mix OR ranch mix
1 TBs ketchup
1 Tbs spicy brown mustard,
1 Tbs bbq sauce
1 Tbs steak sauce
1 egg
mix, shape into a loaf in a big pan, and bake at 350 for 2 hrs (maybe 2 and a half if you’re feeling dangerous)
You can get almost all of these ingredients at the dollar store, and have leftovers if it’s just you. The leftovers make great tacos if (taco seasoning is also like a dollar). Enjoy your revenge loaf

I don't see people talking about this so today is the 110th anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, in where the factory owners locked working women and girls inside to "eliminate the risk of theft" (in reality it was too keep them from taking breaks), which resulted in the gruesome deaths of 123 mostly immigrant women and girls and 23 men, many of whom jumped to their deaths from the ninth floor either in a panicked attempt to escape or in order to die quickly. There were reports that some of the workers were on fire already as they jumped.
The eighth floor of the building was able to telephone the tenth floor to warn them about the fire, but the factory on the ninth floor where these women and girls labored had no such communication and such warning.
The factory owners were criminally charged with manslaughter for actions that contributed to the mass deaths but acquitted. However, this tragedy led to mass sympathy to the labor movement, and unions spurred on safety regulations that passed in New York state and eventually the entire country, and activists were able to reduce child labor in the process.
This tragedy is a reminder that has been forgotten in the 110 years since: every safety regulation-- every scrap of paperwork contributing to the hundreds of pages of red tape people like to complain about--every word of it was written in the blood of a laborer.

the indescribable annoyingness that having new entry level knowledge into a field of study gives you is so unbelievably funny to me. babby psych students who become obsessed with diagnosing their friends with personality disorders for disagreeing with them. babby paleo students who get irrationally angry at plastic dinosaur toys for children. newly-identifying chefs/foodies who are ready to have a meltdown on anyone who cooks a steak to a wellness level they don’t enjoy. if youve ever wondered why every subreddit for every topic is Like That this shit is why
