The Realm of Dreams

In 1900, Sigmund Freud, the Austrian founding father of psychoanalysis, produced the first dedicated study on dreams in The Interpretation of Dreams. According to Freud, dreams are the royal road to the unconscious and the fulfillment of our repressed wishes and unconscious desires. While there are now several theories that debunk Freud’s, his is still one of the most popular and most debatable stances there is on the topic. Indeed, all of us still wonder about the same questions: What are dreams and what do they do for us? Many believe that dreaming is a function of the brain and nothing more. There are also dream scientists who believe that dreams help us heal from traumatic experiences, deal with daily stress, and refocus our energy on things that should be prioritize. On the other hand, many claim that dreaming is a spiritual experience, a way of accessing and communing with the divine. They believe that when we dream, we go to a place similar to where we will go to when we pass on. What we know so far to be true is that dreams happen anytime during sleep, but during deep rapid-eye-movement sleep, dreams are the most vivid. Everybody dreams, but according to studies, 95 percent of all dreams are forgotten shortly after waking due to the changes in the brain during sleep. Now, could Freud be right? We gain access to the unconscious when we dream but forget everything the moment the dream is over? Can dreams take us to other planes of existence? Can dreams bring us closer to God or allow us to experience his power more fully? There are no definitive answers to these and to many more questions about dreams. Unlike scientific theories, many beliefs about dreams are without absolute evidences or empirical proofs for support. This is another mystery in the universe that has to be further explored.
