Biden Administration Removes Paywall For Federally Funded Studies
Federally funded studies must be free and accessible to the public, the White House has decided. What happens to scientific research conducted with federal funding is dictated by White House policy, and has been for decades. Until now, federally funded researchers have been allowed to publish their findings in paywalled academic journals for up to one year. But that ends now. A memo issued…

Top 100 Ladies of TV
Looking at old blog posts, many years ago I did a "100 favorite female characters" list, but I have met so many wonderful new ladies now that it is quite out of date and needs a major update to accommodate them. International Women’s Day seems like the perfect time to do so!
Only this time I'm restricting it to TV characters, or I will die of Overwhelm.
NOTE: This list is not in any kind of order, I just wrote them down as they came to mind. I considered alphabetical, but found it was nicer to keep everyone from a given show together. And rather than starting from scratch, I kept as much of the original list as I could and just added newer favorites on at the end, if you're wondering why some of these Very Old Fandoms are clustered at the top.

the new Scott article and interview - "we're going to kick Charlie's ass" lol i hope so - confirms he's going to US Nats with CPom
this is written by Ryan Pyette who's been following and writing about VM since they were kids and yet they printed "Marilyn" and Charlie and Tessa Virtue of Ilderton💀😅
Says Lily and Nathan are aiming for top 5, Haley and Nik for the podium. There would have to be mistakes from some others for that to happen, esp for HN, but I hope they do move up
Christina confirming Tessa spent one day there but not more
Scott having the goal to make his school equal to the MTL one - Interesting he says about his first two years (is he counting before he started this school? the way he talks about time can be pretty impressionistic 😅): "My first two years, I got bogged down in hammering on them, because I like being in the trenches. The kids felt it was super heavy and it didn't work. I started being more positive and bringing the energy every day and you see them lift up with results much better."
If he started out being as intense with teams as he was on himself, it would be no wonder if it was too much- Zach Donohue said a couple seasons ago that Scott once spent an entire session on one transition with them, and he said it like it was a lot even for him. But Scott's students look so comfortable and like they're feeling no pressure and only support from him, his current approach is working
Talking about his dad is rare: "My dad was fair and hard on me. If I deserved it, I got it and I deserved it a lot. He didn't baby me and I thrived. I have fantastic parents" But he said it as he was talking about his students- "They motivate differently. I grew up in the other one" then talks about his dad and his Russian coaches and their harsher method - so it seems like in his mind how hard his dad was had something in common? even if it worked for him to a degree and obviously came from a different place
Talking about a black period and negativity in his outlook towards skating leading up to Sochi and saying he "can have a direct impact on the negative parts of the sport that don't need to exist" ❤️

Extensive Report: Curtilage Protections in California By Weston Mickey Chico Ca
**Extensive Report: Curtilage Protections in California**
**I. Introduction**
- Curtilage, the immediate area surrounding a home, holds paramount significance in Fourth Amendment jurisprudence, ensuring that individuals are shielded from unreasonable searches and seizures. This extensive report offers an in-depth exploration of curtilage protections in California, tracing their historical evolution, analyzing notable case law, considering their contemporary implications, and drawing on insights from legal scholars.
**II. Historical Origins of Curtilage Protections**
- The concept of curtilage protections has deep historical roots, originating in English common law. Legal scholars such as William Blackstone underscored the sanctity of the home, influencing early American jurisprudence.
- Akhil Reed Amar's scholarship delves into the historical evolution of the Fourth Amendment, highlighting its critical role in safeguarding individual privacy and property rights.
**III. California's Legal Framework**
- California boasts a unique legal landscape that significantly influences curtilage protections. Legal scholar Erwin Chemerinsky's comprehensive analysis emphasizes the state's robust constitutional provisions and statutes, reinforcing the importance of curtilage protections in California.
- Chemerinsky's research underscores the distinctiveness of California's legal framework, particularly in the context of privacy rights. His analysis sheds light on how the state's legal heritage shapes the interpretation and application of curtilage protections.
- Furthermore, California's legal uniqueness stems from its historical role as a trendsetter in legal matters, serving as a source of precedent and influence for other states.
**IV. Evolution of Curtilage Interpretation**
- The evolution of curtilage protections has been shaped by key U.S. Supreme Court decisions. The writings of former Justice Antonin Scalia, particularly in cases like *Florida v. Jardines* (2013), emphasize the significance of property rights and the delineation of curtilage boundaries.
- Further insights from legal scholars like Tracey Maclin contribute to vigorous debates about curtilage, analyzing nuances such as exigent circumstances and the reasonable expectation of privacy.
- Scholarly works by David Sklansky explore the societal implications of curtilage protections, emphasizing their role in maintaining a balance between law enforcement's needs and individual privacy.
**V. Modern Technological Challenges**
- In the digital age, the challenges to curtilage protections have expanded. Orin Kerr's scholarship addresses the intricacies of emerging technologies and their impact on Fourth Amendment jurisprudence, providing valuable perspectives on the evolving concept of curtilage.
- Legal scholar Ryan Calo, affiliated with organizations like the Center for Internet and Society, explores the intersection of technology and curtilage, examining how digital advancements raise new questions about privacy rights.
- Paul Ohm's research delves into the concept of "digital curtilage" in the age of smart homes, discussing how the Internet of Things affects the boundaries of privacy within a residence.
**VI. Privacy Advocacy and Public Awareness**
- Privacy advocacy groups, including the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), collaborate with legal scholars to raise public awareness. Their research informs critical public discourse about technology's implications for curtilage and privacy rights.
**VII. Ongoing Legal Debates**
- Contemporary legal debates regarding curtilage protections are informed by scholarly research. Scholars like Laura Donohue, engaged in comparative law, examine how different jurisdictions approach curtilage protections, offering valuable insights into their application beyond California's borders.
- Legal scholar Tracey Meares contributes to discussions about community-based policing and the impact of curtilage protections on police-community relations, shedding light on the social dimensions of the law.
**VIII. Relevant California Case Law (Additional)**
- *People v. Kokes* (1998) 61 Cal. App. 4th 664:
- This case clarified the distinction between curtilage and open fields, offering guidance on the application of Fourth Amendment protections.
- *People v. Macabeo* (2017) 2 Cal. 5th 840:
- The California Supreme Court's decision reinforced the need for law enforcement to obtain warrants when entering curtilage, even under exigent circumstances.
- *People v. Blair* (2003) 31 Cal. 4th 125:
- This case examined curtilage boundaries, including areas like driveways, contributing nuance to the definition of curtilage.
- *People v. Bailey* (1985) 176 Cal. App. 3d 402:
- A landmark decision that affirmed the necessity of curtilage protection and the requirement of warrants for searches in California.
- *People v. Thompson* (2006) 38 Cal. 4th 811:
- Clarifying curtilage boundaries beyond immediate proximity to the home, this case emphasized the importance of a reasonable expectation of privacy.
- *People v. Rinehart* (2009) 176 Cal. App. 4th 508:
- Introducing factors to consider in determining curtilage extent, such as proximity, usage, and enclosure.
**IX. Technological Challenges in the Digital Age**
- The landmark case of *Carpenter v. United States* (2018)
585 U.S. ___ significantly extended curtilage concepts to the digital realm. This case addressed the privacy implications of cell phone location data, setting a precedent for digital curtilage.
**X. Ongoing Legal Implications**
- As technology and legal standards continue to evolve, the future of curtilage protections in California remains dynamic. Emerging technologies, ongoing cases, and legislative developments will significantly shape the trajectory of these protections.
**XI. Conclusion**
- This extensive report has provided an intricate historical backdrop, strong legal foundations, a comprehensive examination of the contemporary challenges surrounding curtilage protections in California, and additional analysis from legal scholars. Incorporating insights from legal scholars, additional case law, and an analysis of the law's evolution, it offers a holistic understanding of how curtilage safeguards individual privacy rights within the state. The multifaceted landscape of curtilage remains a critical component of Fourth Amendment protections in California, preserving the sanctity of the home and its surroundings.

This week, we join a young woman at a cemetery. Turns out this is Joanne Mackie from the first season episode Vanity's Mirror. She remembers the events from that time as she brings flowers to her sister Helen's gravesite - and we get a recap through these flashbacks. We are reminded of all the deaths Helen was responsible for when using the cursed compact mirror, including her own death with Joanne's boyfriend. We also see that the someone who found the compact back then was Joanne herself.
Back in the present, we go to a photo shoot with models posing as music plays. The current top model is jealous that she is sitting by while the new model gets all the photographer's attention.
Emery, the photographer, asks Joanne, who is working there doing make up, to get Tabitha ready. Tabitha asks how she looks and Joanne reassures her. Tabitha then gives Emery the side-eye about his doting on the new chick. He comments that Tabitha is the one he goes home with, right? He notices wrinkles and demands Joanne touch her up. Seems the higher ups are questioning Tabitha's age. She is pissed as Joanne tries to help.
After Joanne goes to help Emery, Tabitha uses the cursed compact to touch up her make up. In the mirror, she sees the events it help cause in the past. She's intrigued.
At Curious Goods, Jack is frustrated at being sick. Micki is doting on him and tells him to go back to bed. Ryan agrees, and off Jack goes, but not before enjoying their attention.
At the photo studio, Emery is showing his boss the negatives, playing up how great Tabitha was. Boss isn't buying it and demands he reshoot without her. Emery says Tabitha is the cover, the whole center of the project. She says Tabitha is old news. Joanne also tries to advocate, but to no avail. Emery goes to call Sandy to replace Tabitha. Seems he sees things as the boss does now, too. Joanne can't find her compact.
At home, Tabitha is throwing things and taking out her anger on Emery, who tells her to accept it. Tab looks into the compact and tells him to go. She looks in again, at her face.
At the studio, Joanne is still searching, worried about what became of the cursed item.
Jack is still ill, and Micki goes to check on him. Ryan gets a call but no one speaks. It is Joanne, worried, but she hangs up.
Tabitha is talking with her doctor about more surgery to look younger. He is worried this would be too much and not willing to risk his reputation. He chases her upstairs to try and convince her. She is looking in the compact mirror, light reflecting onto his face. In the mirror, she sees his bloodied face. She demands he make her perfect, they struggle and he falls and crashes into a glass table. His face is bloody, as the mirror predicted. As he dies, Tabitha looks and sees her face turn younger.
At the store, Ryan and Micki are still fretting over Jack when a customer arrives. It's Joanne. Soon, we see Jack has joined them as Joanne talks. Jack wishes she had returned it, but she says it reminded her of Helen. She thinks someone at the magazine has it. They ask about suspicious activity. Jack tells her to take Micki and Ryan and they can hopefully find it before anyone dies.
At the magazine, Emery is setting up a new shoot with the boss. Joanne tells him Micki and Ryan are friends, Emery wants them gone, but the boss distracts him. Joanne fills them in on the drama with Tabitha. They try to be casual.
Emery is setting things up with Sandy as his new star, and cuts off Joanne when she ask if he has seen her compact. Tabitha arrives, to Emery's chagrin. She says she is there to wish Sandy well. The boss notices how good Tabitha looks, and wants her to get ready for tonight's shoot after all. Joanne also asks her about the compact.
Back at home, Micki and Ryan say they had no luck, but Jack shows them the article about the doctor dying at Tabitha's apartment. They don't know what Tabitha could be using the compact for, and wonder if it changed it's curse. They head back as Jack calls the cops to ask about the accident.
Emery and his boss scour the negatives. Joanne notices Tabitha needs a make up touch-up, and her boss notices, as well. Tab dons sunglasses. Boss lady is now saying she will have Emery shoot both women and decide later. Tabitha looks in the mirror.
Ryan and Micki talk with Joanne, but Emery wants them gone. Joanne doesn't want to believe Tabitha could have the compact. Emery asks after Tabitha, so Joanne goes to find her. Tab walks up on Sandy, primping in the mirror. Tab holds the compact, reflecting light into the younger woman's face. She then looks in the small mirror and sees Sandy's face, burnt and in pain. She gives her a snide comment and walks off. Sandy is spraying her hair and smoking and then is engulfed in flames. Chaos ensues but Tab just looks at her pristine-again face in the compact.
Sandy, burnt all over face, is taken away on a stretcher. Emery says to wrap up the shoot, but Tabitha demands they continue. This is her shoot, she says, to the shocked ensemble. Joanne realizes Tab must have the cursed item, as she recalls Helen saying and doing hurtful, insensitive things back when she had been using the compact.
At home, Tabitha knows Emery is just there to ride on her position back on top. She goes upstairs as he calls another model, Kimichi. Tab overhears him say the two models will share the photoshoot.
Jack tells Micki and Ryan what he learned about the doctor's death. He says they were expecting the item to do what it did last time, give the user love and respect. But Tabitha doesn't need that, she needs her face to be perfect for her career. Micki and Ryan head off to find Joanne.
At the new shoot, Emery sends Joanne off to make sure things go smoothly. A huge lighting rig is lifted up into place. Joanne is suspicious of Tabitha, and tries to keep an eye on her. Tab is playing nice about the double shoot. When Emery says Kimichi should go first, Tab agrees, to his surprise. Tabitha looks at her face and sees more wrinkles. She pulls out the compact as Joanne watches, again recalling her sister and the past.
Kimichi poses and Emery photographs her and the shoot seems to be going well. As Kimichi prepares for the next session, Tabitha watches, desperate. Joanne searches for the compact. Emery takes Kimichi and they go back to work. Tabitha shows up, reflecting light from the compact on the both of them. Emery tells her to knock it off, Tab looks and sees both of them in the mirror with grievous injuries. Joanne spies Tabith too late, as the lighting rig falls on both Emery and Kimichi. Joanne grabs the compact and runs, Tabitha chasing her.
Joanne tries to talk sense into the model, but Tabitha is loving the results of the curse.
Emery is dead and a wounded Kimichi is helped up. Ryan and Micki arrive as Tabitha grabs the compact and aims it at them all. Ryan using his coat to block the reflection in time, as Joanne continues to try and get through to Tabitha. But Tab again tries to use it on them, as Ryan struggles, throwing things. Micki uses mirror to reflect the reflection back at her, then Tabitha hits the big mirror, as well. She collapses as her face is basically melted, killing her. Joanne picks up the compact and hands it to Micki.
At the store, Jack asks Micki how Joanne is doing. Micki says she won't want to see them, since each time she does it is because someone has died. Jack tells Ryan not to blame Joanne, she thought she was doing the right thing, and not she has even more guilt to deal with. We see Joanne at the cemetery again, this time with two bouquets.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My thoughts:
I love the idea of a sequel episode, and following up on an item the gang wasn't able to retrieve. But I find it funny how some of Joanne's memories at the cemetery are of moments she was not present for.
They do make an awful big use of flashbacks in this episode, definitely padding the run time. I'm sure it was to help those who had no memory of the first episode, but I think it could have been done in a less heavy-handed way.
I feel bad for Joanne. Yes, she should have given the compact to them the first time, but she never used it and has to still deal with all this guilt in regards to it.
Also like that the cursed items can change what they offer depending on who is currently using it. For Helen the first time, it was complete love and smothering devotion. For Tabitha it was restoring her face to youthful beauty. I would assume all the items then had this ability.
Loved Micki and Ryan doting on the sick Jack, who played reluctant but liked the attention.
Another Deepdale no show brings pressure all round
As the boos rang out and chants of "you don`t know what your doing" filled the air during and after the Sheffield United defeat at Deepdale I thought to myself that the long honeymoon was over for Ryan Lowe and he had to start delivering the goods regularly at home. Six wins out of twenty since the manager took over and only one win in eight this term is not the home record North End fans were looking for. Against Stoke there were few boos and no chants, just empty seasts long before the end of the game and that to me is very worrying indeed. The are two sides to the story of course but another defeat at Deepdale, this time 0-2 to Stoke, should really be setting the alarm bells ringing in the boardroom at Preston and not just in the managers office. I hear and read more and more people unhappy with the performances but clearly saying that you cannot keep blaming the manager.
The gaffer made three changes to the side that lost at Bristol on Wednesday evening with Jordan Storey, Alan Browne and Bambo Diaby coming in for Greg Cunningham, Daniel Johnson and Liam Lindsay. The latter two both having picked up knocks at Ashton Gate. Woodman was first into the action with a good smothering save as the visitors started the better. North End moved the ball about well enough but offered nothing up front inspite of the hard work of Maguire. Storey had a header saved and there were claims for a penalty which were immediately waived away by Mr Donohue, who may well want to reflect on his general performance on Saturday afternoon. Hughes went down in the box five minutes from the break but once again nothing was given and at the other end Storey made an excellent last gasp tackle on Gayle. A third penalty shout for North End went up just before the break, this time for handball, but once again nothing was forthcoming.
No changes for North End at the interval but once again the visitors started the stronger in the second half with a shot flying over the bar early on. Just before the hour mark the Potters took the lead when a Gayle cross from the left found Smallbone unmarked and he made no mistake in giving Stoke the lead. You knew then there was no way back for North End when the visitors went two up eight minutes later as Campbell cleverly squared up Diaby and curled a shot past Woodman into the far corner. The keeper has been excellent this season but he might well hold his hand up at giving the striker too much to aim at on this occasion. Two more chances went the way of the visitors but North End were a beaten side and only the debut of young Finlay Cross-Adair with eight minutes to go brought some applause from the quickly emptying Deepdale terraces.North End surrendered meekly in the end however there was no one left to boo as the referee blew for full time.
Once again, as we have seen on many occasion in the last decade or so, the blame game has started at Deepdale. The facts are that North End`s home record is poor under Lowe averaging least than a point and a half a game. The away form on the other hand reads played nineteen won eight drawn five lost six which is a shade over a point and a half a game. Nothing wrong with us on the road but we seem to have a real problem at Deepdale and the issue there is that the new Season Card holders are not likely to return with a win ratio of less than one ine three. Certainly a big week coming up for North End with a trip to lowly Huddersfield on Tuesday evening where I am sure we will be looking to get back to winning ways and then an absolutely must not lose at you know where next Saturday lunchtime. Four points from these two games looks a minimum ask to at least quell the undercurrent of dissatisfaction running through the fan base.
Not Fine
[Featuring Wendy @drinkyoursoupbitch, Neely @cursebreakerfarrier, and Montague @montaguehphm.]
The sunlight was nearly blinding and Conor O’Donnell squeezed his eyes shut. He reached blindly onto his nightstand, accidentally knocking things off, until he wrapped his fingers around his aviator sunglasses. He blindly shoved them on and sat up. He quickly lay back down, though, as a wave of nausea swept through his body. Once it passed, he stood up quickly, hoping to avoid another wave of nausea. He didn’t. His body swayed and he leaned heavily against one of the posts of his four poster bed. He reached into his trunk and pulled out clothes at random. He ended up with a pair of gray trousers, a white dress shirt and his Ravenclaw tie. He grabbed his bag, and after shoving his eyeglasses into one of the front pockets, slung it across his shoulder.
He stumbled his way down the stairs to the great hall, stopping only to ride out a few waves of nausea. His eyes fluttered shut for a second before opening again. Once in the Great Hall, he swallowed back the nausea as the smells of breakfast overwhelmed him. Conor stumbled his way to the table where his siblings and a few of their friends were.
“Whoa, Con, you look like something the cat dragged in,” his brother, Ryan, commented.
“Suck me, Ry. Suck me,” Conor snarled, reaching across the table for a piece of toast.
“What crawled up your…?”
“Ryan! Leave him alone for a few minutes,” his sister, Sara exclaimed.
“I’m not wrong, though. He looks like something the cat dragged in.”
Conor bit into the piece of toast as his siblings dissolved into bickering. It settled like a rock in his stomach, so he dropped the rest onto the table. He rode another wave of nausea as he stood, but if he didn’t get out of here, he was sure that he was going to vomit and that wouldn’t be pretty.
He turned around and quickly walked away from the table, swallowing as a combination of nausea and a pounding in the back of his head attacked his body. He swayed and Sara’s hands landed on his shoulders.
“Conor, are you sure you’re okay?” she asked carefully.
“F-f-f-f-f-fine,” Conor answered, his cheeks flaming.
“Then why are you wearing sunglasses and not your regular glasses?”
“No-no r-r-r-reason.”
“Okay. But you can tell me if you’re not feeling well. You don’t look very good.”
“I’m f-f-f-fine.”
Sara nodded but looked at him skeptically and let him go. Conor shoved his hands into his pockets and made his way through the hallways to his first class.
Classes went well until arithmancy. He had been bugged a little about his glasses and the fact that he was paler than normal. Wendy had been the one who badgered him the most during their classes about both his glasses and his loss of color. Then again, to most people he probably didn’t look all that different. It was that Irish paleness, after all. Although, Conor didn’t have the dark hair that his father had had to make him look even paler.
“Alright, we will be breaking down into groups of four. So please listen for your last name as I group you off,” Professor Sinistra said.
Conor closed his eyes. The pounding in his head had only gotten worse as the day had gone by and he was seriously considering switching to his eyeglasses. The only debate was either increasing the nausea or having a killer headache.
“Group 5: Donohue, Gordon, Laurie, and O’Donnell,” she called.
He stood up and swallowed the nausea back as the pounding in his head worsened. He walked to the corner where a familiar head of blue hair was with two other boys with dark hair. Conor dropped himself into the seat next to Wendy and rubbed his temples.
“Headache?” Wendy asked and he nodded. “You know if you wore your glasses you wouldn’t have a headache.”
Conor sighed and dug into the front pocket of his bag. He set the case down on the table and opened it. He pulled out the sleek black frames and placed the aviator glasses into the case instead before sliding the normal eyeglasses on.
“So, should we introduce ourselves properly? I mean obviously I recognize you as we’re all Ravenclaws, but I’m not totally sure I know your names,” one of the boys, the one with glasses whose name Conor couldn’t quite remember said.
“Sure. I’m Wendy Gordon,” Wendy said.
“I’m Montague Donohue, but you could call me Monty, if you’d like.”
“I’m Neely Laurie,” the other boy said.
“C-Conor O’Donnell,” Conor said, the heat rising in his cheeks.
The four teens spread out their notes on the two tables and turned to the board. Conor waved a piece of parchment and loosened his tie. Damn, it’s really fecking hot in here, he thought. His cheeks were still fairly flushed and Wendy shot him a concerned glance. Once Professor Sinistra had finished explaining their project, she turned to him.
“You still look like crap,” she said.
“I’m f-f-fine,” Conor said.
“If you say so. So the project.”
It didn’t take long for the four teens to start working on the project. It wasn’t too difficult, but the numbers were starting to swim before his eyes. It also felt like the temperature in the room had dropped fifty degrees and the pounding in his head was getting louder.
“F-f-f-f-f-f-f shit,” Conor swore as the word got stuck.
Wendy laughed, while Montague and Neely looked slightly horrified and confused.
“You lads have heard him swear before right?” Wendy asked and the two boys shook their heads.
“You swear often?” Neely asked.
“J-just when the-the words get s-s-st-st-stuck. Shit,” Conor answered.
“He usually will use shit or feck or occasionally fuck. He’ll even swear in Irish,” Wendy said, smirking.
Conor rolled his eyes, and rubbed his temples with his index fingers. He slid his glasses down for a moment. Black spots dashed across his vision, and he slid his eyes shut. He could make out Wendy and Neely and Montague talking, but it all sounded like it was underwater. He opened his eyes again and pushed his glasses back up his nose. Damn, I think I have a migraine, he thought. The heat in the room increased again and Conor untied his tie a second time, letting the silky material dangle around his neck. He glanced down at the paper again and the world went black.
~
The room was bright and Conor squinted, his eyes trying to adjust to the sudden influx of light. The only problem, once he’d adjusted to the sudden brightness, was that everything was very blurry. Someone handed him his glasses and he slid them on. The hospital wing, shit, he thought. There were six people around his bed; Ryan, Cara, Sara, Wendy, Neely, and Montague.
“W-what happened?” Conor asked.
“You passed out, mate. Professor Sinistra asked Montague, Neely and I to take you to Madam Pomfrey,” Wendy said.
“She had to cool you down before administering the pepper-up potion. Your temperature was 103!” Montague exclaimed and Conor winced, only partially because of the headache that, thankfully, had very much lessened.
“Yeah, Professor Sinistra is giving us until next week to finish the project,” Neely added.
“You’re an idiot, Con, that’s what happened,” Ryan said and Conor couldn’t help but offer his brother the middle finger. Ryan, naturally, returned it.
“You know you can tell people if you don’t feel well,” Sara said, squeezing his hand. Huh, Conor hadn’t even realized that she was holding his hand.
“It’s like his damn eyesight,” Cara said and Conor glared at her.
“I’m fine now!” he snapped.
