Rick Marlowe (Richard Armitage) - Vampire / Female OC

A song transports Rick back into time, reliving meeting a singer in Los Angeles

Inspiration : Fly me to the moon - Original by Kaye Ballard : In other words

Rick Marlowe (Richard Armitage) is a character in the stories Art & Vampires. Born as a human in 1754, turned vampire in 1795. Co-founder of VAMPs - Vintage and Art Marketing Partners and Mitchell’s sire.

Art & Vampires is about the relationship and developments around Mitchell (Aidan Turner), a vampire and Amy (Ames), a human, but also features Rick, Alana and Ben as vampires and Lena, Amy’s best friend, as a witch. It’s about the vampire world, the supernatural, but also about history, cities around the world, art, antiques and adventures.

On the last day of their business trip to New York, Alana had joined Rick and Mitchell to acquire some rare artifacts. After several hours of tough negotiations they finally had come to an agreement with the dealer. Back at the townhouse, Alana had suggested they celebrate with a night out, before returning home to New Orleans the next day.

She was taking them to a fancy place, which, according to her, required that they wear tuxedos. There was some resistance, since the boys had been in suits all day, but Alana wouldn't hear it and insisted.

Not long after, they found themselves in a bar, which was only a short ride away from the townhouse. Alana hadn’t been exaggerating when she said that the place was fancy. They didn’t stand out in their tuxedos and Alana fit right in, looking stunning in her red evening dress and her matching 1920ies ruby necklace, which she had gotten out of that day’s deal as well.

The evening was still young, but it was already pretty crowded. The atmosphere was pleasant, music not too loud, lights not too bright, just the way Rick liked it. He was grateful that Lana had dragged them from the townhouse tonight. It was nice to step away from it all for a bit.

They found themselves a table with a crescent shaped bench close to a small stage. There was going to be a live performance by the looks of it. The stage was dimly lit, but he could make out a piano and one of those big vintage microphones on a stand.

They ordered drinks and soon they were chatting away, mostly reminiscing about the past.

Rick had been right about the live performance. After a while the main lights in the venue dimmed, making the tiny lights on the ceiling twinkle like stars in a dark night's sky.

On the stage, a single spotlight illuminated the microphone. The crowd hushed and into the spotlight stepped a gorgeous woman in a long black dress, with dark wavy hair and blood red lips.

Rick was captivated before she even started singing. There was something about her, but he didn't quite know what.

After a quick welcome, she started singing in a soft and very sexy voice. She was singing that song, which made a shiver run down his spine and made him remember instantly. He found himself transported back in time to the 1950s, when he was setting up the Los Angeles branch, back to the woman who captivated his heart in a similar way. Sandy was her name.

He had found himself back at the bar several times in those first weeks in LA. Not only was it a pleasant bar, but the performer had caught his attention. A gorgeous singer with a golden voice, who poured her heart into all of the songs.

Her glances towards him hadn't gone unnoticed either. After her performance, she tended to hang around the bar and this particular night, he was seated right at the spot where she usually picked up her drink.

She moved towards him and even though he didn't make a habit of using his vampire super hearing, he could hear her heart beat faster with every approaching step, the blood rushing through her veins, her breathing ragged. He didn’t need to read her mind to know what she was thinking.

A few steps away from him, she stopped and looked up at him, meeting his sky blue eyes and slight smile with her hazel eyes and blood red lips.

'Good evening sir, ' she almost whispered.

Rick stood up and gestured to the seat, offering it to her. 'Good evening, ' he smiled.

'Did you enjoy the performance? ' she asked, sitting down on the bar stool and gesturing to the bartender for her usual drink.

It didn't take long for them to get totally immersed in conversation. At the end of the evening, when the crowd had thinned out and the bar got a little quieter, he had asked her which of the songs she performed was her favorite.

'Oh, that's easy,' she smiled. 'It's Kaye Ballard 's new song, 'in other words'. I love that song so much. Imagine traveling to the moon for real and being closer to the stars. Wouldn't that be magical? '

With Rick's experience of progress over the centuries, he could very well imagine it to be possible and just over a decade later, mankind indeed flew closer to the stars and landed on the moon.

With the last of the customers leaving the bar, he made his move.

'So what do you think about a little star gazing? ' he suggested.

'I'd love to, ' she smiled. 'Let me get my things and then let's get out of here. '

Even back in the fifties, Los Angeles had millions of inhabitants, so just going outside and looking up to the sky to see the stars wasn’t really an option because of the light pollution. They both knew it and they just went home to her place instead.

Rick always dreaded the moment when living people invited him to their home. After centuries of practice of getting people to invite him in, he still got a little nervous, but with Sandy, he needn’t have worried.

‘This is me,’ she smiled, took his hand and ran up the few steps to the entrance of the building. ‘Come on in. I’ll show you my favorite hiding place.’ And there it was, his pass to step over the threshold and enter.

Sandy lived in a small apartment with access to a roof garden. She grabbed a bottle of wine from her kitchen and they entered the door at the end of the hallway to climb the stairs to her secret hiding place. She cuddled up to him under a big blanket. For a while, they were drinking wine, chatting and listening to the city sounds. To Sandy it must have just sounded like one big mix of sounds, but Rick could tune in to the city’s nightlife sounds with his vampire hearing, isolating any of them if he wanted to.

The building was relatively high and they were able to see the pretty city lights, which they were fine with as a substitute for star gazing.

Not before long, the view was all but forgotten and they only had eyes for each other. The conversation dwindled and their lips met. He could never tell if it was Sandy herself, the wine, or the fact that he had been without company for several years, or all of it together, but Rick drowned in her kisses and her warm touch against his cool body.

His senses heightened. He could hear her heart pounding, the blood rushing through her veins, like he had heard it in the bar, but the sounds were amplified and he couldn’t resist any longer. In the heat of passion, he felt his fangs emerge, his body tense, his grip on her tighten and before he knew it, his fangs sank deep into the velvety skin of her neck.

She didn’t scream, she just gasped. Maybe it was because of the intoxication of the wine, he didn’t know, but he was grateful. For a moment, he indulged in the blood, thinned by the alcohol, but he quickly came to his senses before he drained her completely of her blood.

He pulled back and looked at the puncture marks on her neck and the traces of blood flowing from the wounds. How could he have been so careless? Why did he feed on her? He had been abstaining from feeding on humans for years. Why had the beast come out tonight? He didn’t know.

Maybe that was why he turned a blind eye to Alana’s ‘snacking’. He knew that he would never be able to control the vampire in him permanently or go without human blood entirely. But even if he didn’t kill people for pleasure, like he knew other vampires did, he detested that side of vampirism, the feeding on humans and he tried to avoid it at all cost.

Slowly, his fangs retracted, his eyes changed back from pitch black to the regular sky blue color.

Sandy seemed to be quite out of it, her head resting on his shoulder. He carefully lifted her and carried her down the steps to the bedroom. After he had placed her on the bed, his fangs emerged once more, only to pinch himself. He parted her lips and let a few drops trickle onto her tongue. He wiped the blood off her neck with a tissue. The puncture wounds would be gone by the morning. Taking one last look at her, he quietly left the apartment and disappeared into the night.

He would never see her again, nor visit that bar. But every time he heard that song, he was reminded of that night.

Just over a decade later, the title of the song was changed. As of then, Sandy’s beloved song was called 'Fly me to the moon '. He had wondered how she would feel about that and if she was still singing her song. He never found out.

He was abruptly pulled back to the present when Alana pinched him. ‘Where did you go off to?’ she asked.

He just smiled at her. This was his secret. Or was it his shame? Whichever it was, it was his and his alone and he would never tell a living soul.

smooth porcelain was disrupted by the mountain range of shivers crawling its way out of his skin and taking shape as a thousand goosebumps, shamefully decorating his extended limb. completely bewitched, a vacant stare dug into the pirate while they nursed on the puddle of ruby-red so graciously offered to them. he had never witnessed such flagrant depravity from their kind. mortals dabbled in bloodshed and savagery, however, to sip upon a spoonful of raw, fluid humanity was taboo in even the most untamed groups and, though marlowe was not entirely human, he held resemblance enough that their act should not have been met with such glaring pleasure.

the feeling was foreign yet oddly enticing. his fingers burned with excitement where their tongue roamed, a sensation that sunk deep past his skin, titillated his nerve endings, rattled the bone and made a home between his joints. marlowe was uncharacteristically statuesque, the silence as thick as the blood pooling atop his tail — aside from the faint lapping of saliva and gore. but what would happen if he slid his fingers further past their welcome lips ? if he toyed at their curious tongue with a gentle claw or pressed wet, padded fingers hard against the roof of their mouth ? he knew for certain it would not be enough. he would dive past their dainty uvula and down down down, deep into their gullet. those webbed spindles would fist their throat ‘til the cavern of their chest was reached, where he would then finger through the various organs strewn about in search of the most glorious prize : a beating black heart. what a frenzy that would send him into ! the pum-pump-pumping of its hypnotic rhythm against the soft palm of his enclosed mitt . . . a silky whine escaped him at the mere thought.

the hum reverberating from off the fellow’s throat and rattling his imprisoned digits broke marlowe free from his carnal fantasy. the beast of a human seemed so hungry, roaming those finned-fingers long after the stripes of wine had been licked clean. marlowe wanted to offer them more, to cup his hands together like a goblet overflowing with pooled blood for the pirate to indulge upon further. but that did not at all seem fair !! why should such a mundane creature, something so ordinary and flawed as ‘man’, be permitted to dine upon his essence like some sovereign seated against a divine banquet. it was he who should have been granted a feast. how backwards the rules of their game had become. the placidity of his face was disrupted by a hundred wrinkles of disgust as he pulled his drool-dripping hand free from the balmy bed of their tongue, a single thread of saliva connecting them ( sharp claw to soft lip ) before being unceremoniously snapped. jealousy bubbled in the pits of his empty stomach. “ intoxicating, isn’t it. “ the murmur was drenched in bitter contempt. “ tread carefully lest your snake of a silver-tongue become obsessed. once you have tasted something this holy, nothing else shall ever compare. an incurable addiction we folk are. ‘tis why so many of your brethren come crawling after us into the waves of wet-hell, and you seem all but eager to join them. “

he could feel the uneven tempo of their heartbeat, the thin sheet of skin doing little to conceal its traitorous pulse. such a sweet, simple victory could not be celebrated for long, unfortunately. “ i wish for— “ his chiding was cut short as the sea-beast sucked in a sharp draw of salty air. merfolk were strong creatures forged to be better in every imaginable detail, but whittle all those perfections away and all that would remain was marlowe. pitiful, weak, delicate marlowe. his tail wreathed as cloth came down on it, a copper tang mixing with musk and old cotton. already sorely sensitive, the pirate’s firm hold and tight clinch of fabric was enough to send hot flames shooting through his bulk. an irate cry boomed from out a shaking chest, rippling the lagoon surface with its echo. it was not until they so bravely pressed their fingers against the wound with tender pressure did marlowe’s eyes glow with true enmity. his own hand shot out, wrapping around the focused tension of their muscles, and clawed in. his nails dug deep, latching himself to them as he panted with heavy hostility. “ i wish it to be quick. for your sake, at least. my patience will soon run out . . . and i am not nearly as ‘gentle’. “
