Almost every adaptation of Cyrano has an actor for Cyrano who’s 20+ years older than the actress for Roxane, even though it’s explicit in the text that they were childhood friends and grew up together.
I’m tired of it, especially because having them be the same age emphasises that they’re intellectual equals, and could add to the tragedy of the play in other ways:
If Roxane and Cyrano are both in their twenties then it adds to the tragedy of Roxane being widowed so young, as well as Cyrano giving up on the possibility of being loved when he’s barely into adulthood. Casting an older actor to play de Guiche could then emphasise the conflict between a traditionalist de Guiche and the younger, more radical Cyrano and Roxane. It also adds tragedy with Cyrano dying in his late thirties, when he could have had a happy, long life with Roxane, if only he’d been able to tell her how he felt about her.
If Roxane and Cyrano were both in their forties, we get a different kind of story. It would mean that Cyrano has lived decades believing himself unlovable. It would also explcitly state that the most beautiful, desirable woman in Paris is middle-aged, which is not a message you often see in a narrative.

Alexander: Why do you have to treat us like toddlers?
Bagoas: Why? You ask me why?!
Bagoas: *points at Alexander*: You jumped into an enemy stronghold without any cover whatsoever and got shot into the fucking lung.
Bagoas: *points at Hephaistion*: You almost drowned yourself on three separate occasions because you were convinced it wasn't that deep.
Bagoas: *points at Roshanak*: You wanted to give a guy Alexander was eyeing poisoned sweets and then almost ate them yourself because you "felt like having a snack".
Bagoas: And you ask me WHY?

So there are no women in the final and I thought it was a shame. I love so many of them. Good luck to pick only one.

Quote
When I think of romantic love, I think of Cyrano de Bergerac and Roxanne, of Romeo and Juliette! I said, I think of Ella and Pops singing together. She said, I lose sleep puzzling over the sequence of Aphrodite, Venus, and Cupid. Speaking of Cupid, I said, in the park yesterday, I saw two cupids fighting over a rose. If that’s a puzzle, she said, I know the answer. Cummings said love is stronger than forget – or something to that effect. Impossible to describe! I said, I know love is suitable for the boudoir and kissable lips.

Dr. Reames wanted to ask you how do you think Alexandros treated Roshanak? Do you think he was polite but distant with her?
They didn’t share a language, which would have made communication difficult absent a translator (which I doubt he brought into the bedchamber).
I expect that, as with Darius’s daughters, he gave her a Greek tutor. Also, by that point, he probably knew some limited Persian, but he would have been kept too busy to learn much. Also, as the conqueror, it wasn’t his duty to learn the language of the conquered, even if he did adopt (post-330) at least some of their styles and court procedure. Old or Middle Persian are not especially easy languages (although for that matter, neither is ancient Greek).
Anyway, I assume he did try to communicate with her via a translator, and later, she’d learned Greek. She wound up in Macedonia, after all.
Alexander doesn’t strike me as the sort of person to abuse those under his protection, so I’ve always assumed he was polite and gentle with her. Whether she was equally polite or gentle with him is another matter. LOL
Just because she was young doesn’t mean she was shy or halting. I’ve always sort of imagined Roshanak as pretty self-sufficient, although that may owe to her handling of matters after his death, getting rid of Statiera. But that no doubt had assistance, maybe insistence, from Perdikkas to put her in his debt.
