Notes on Anitismo - The Ancient Religion of the Philippines by Isabelo de los Reyes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Keep in mind - this was written a while back.
Ancient Chronicles written by the Jesuit hispanic Friars state that at the that the first spaniards set foot in the Philippines from the coast of visayas to Manila there was a considerable population of Muslim converts
This was especially true for Mindanao due to conversion by Islamic  teachers from Borneo
De los Reyes argues that because of this, to find native Filipino religion at its purest, we must look to the North
Distinguishing native religion without outside influence such as from Islam, Hinduism, Christianity etc can be tricky
However he argues that the traces of Native Filipino religion can be found in the stories superstitions and advice that belong to various Filipino ethnic groups (Tagalogs, Bicolanos, Zambalenos etc)
From the South of the country in Mindanao to the extreme North like Luzon, De los Reyes argues then native Filipino religion was consistent
This religion was Anitism or the Cult of Anito, meaning souls of the ancestors.
Anitism is not a monolithic religion and hosts a broad pantheon ranging from Gods to animals, nature, elements and space.
The Philippines had its own modern spiritism and De los Reyes argues this may have been the origins of the cults of "Romanist Saints" (Catholic saints) in the Philippines. By this I think he means that Filipino spirituality influenced how Filipinos proceeded with Catholic worship.
The oldest chronicles about the Philippines can be found in various museums and libraries (such as the National Library of Madrid, Covenant of St Augustine in Manila)
We can follow these chronicles, from when the Jesuit Pedro Quirino provided news of religion in the Philippines in 1604, followed by reproductions by others like the Jesuit Colin in 1663 and others such as Fr. Morga, Gonzalez de Mendoza, Aduarte etc.
Fr Morga said that Filipinos practised Anitism in certain regions like Camarines and Cagayan.
Some traditions would say that Manila and its regions were not originally native to the island - they were from Malayan islands and other remote areas.
Before the Spaniards arrived, Islamic teachers from Borneo came to preach and interacted with the locals
Their teachings and beliefs spread quickly throughout the Philippines
Fr. Grijalva writes that they (Filipinos) started adopting their traditions and took on their names.
De Los Reyes argues that Spanish conquistadors' arrival/conquest was delayed because Filipinos were already familiar with various religions and beliefs and also because of the hands of Datu Lapu Lapu. What I believe he is arguing is that Datu Lapu Lapu and the previous exposure Filipinos had to different religions at first delayed Spanish influence from spreading so quickly.
Other islanders who weren't under the control of the government in the Philippines has their beliefs influenced by religious preachers who travelled to them from the Straits of Malacca and the Red Sea.
An account, dated April 20th 1572 (preserved in the archives of India) which is from the conquest of Luzon details "In these towns, closest to the sea, they do not eat any pork, which the moors taught them. But if you ask them, they say they do not know Muhammed or his law." This account was reproduced by Wenceslao Retana.
In actuality, very few Filipinos could understand/read the teachings of the Koran despite the Islamic influence.
In Filipino traditions, reverence and worship was given to nature and the elements, and this was usually consistent throughout the islands.
Native Filipino religion beliefs include elements, animals, stars and ancestors.
Filipino religion in Manila and nearby areas was a mixture or Anitism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam brought by the Malays of Borneo.
Vocabulary included Sanskrit and Malay terms such as Bathala, meaning Lord.
However these terms are not used in Northern provinces.
De Los Reyes argues that Itnegs and other mountain tribes conserved and maintained the purest form of Filipino religion
In the Ilocos, Cagayan, Isabela and other provinces of Northern Luzon, native Filipino religion was more prevalent
Hindus and Buddhists converted many in Java and Malaysia.
However Muslim influence became dominant in 1478 - 60 years before the Dutch invasion.
According to Javanese legends, Hindus arrives in Java 78 years before Christ.
The first Malays came from the Minangkabau river region to establish cities in Malacca , Ojohor and Singapore in the 12th century, as per Malacca records.
In the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries, there were various Malaysian emigrations reaching the Philippines
De Los Reyes argues that Filipinos may have also populated the islands of Malaysia, and emigrations could have originated from strong winds coming down from the North.
The first Spaniards found the son of Lakandula, King of Manila, when they went to Borneo.
The emperor's master of ceremonies from Japan (Mr Fujita) argued that emigration likely came from the north and that Filipinos may have some relations to the Japanese.
According to Geographers and Historians of the Mariana Islands, what De Los Reyes calls the "know it all Spanish" - had no idea about interesting ruins found in Oceania, one of which was a prehistoric statue that was being held in the British museum.
He argues there may be hidden megaliths, artefacts, and remnants of lost civilisation in the Philippines, as seen in various locations such as : Butacan caves, Pangibalon Hill, Madias de Iloilo and Nasso.

The Mendoza Family
Main Fam
Aunts, uncle and cousins
Here's the whole fam! Before we start the story explanation,  let's start with heights
Reyes: 6'5 Joanne: 5'1 Juan: 6'3 Juliana: 5'7 Nacio: 5'5 Liliana and Oriana: 4'9 Jalinto: 3'3 Alanso: 6'6 Elba: 5'4 Marciana: 5'9 Vicente: 5'7 Deidra: 5'3
Now, story time!
So, Juliana and her sibs are mixed race.
Her mother is American and her father is Colombian.
Due to this, Joanne and Reyes were each disowned from their family's and decided to leave the place they lived. Being supportive, Alanso, Elba and Deidra decided to go with them, not before Deidra came out to her and Joanne's parents. Them leaving, despite being disowned, did not go well in both communities and Joanne and Deidra's brother, Markus Plaskett(whom I've yet to design), captain of the American brigade, made it his life mission to track down and bring both sisters home.
On the road, Joanne and Reyes married and each couple had their children along the way.
When Juliana reached the age of 17, her and her family finally reached the Encanto Valley, able to get in through the crack that remained from the movie events(a year prior to the Mendoza family's arrival).
Of course, many were shocked by the new arrivals and Alma was wary of them, but they were allowed to stay and make the Valley their home. It didn't take long for Juliana, her siblings and cousins to make friends with the young adults and children of the Encanto Valley, even befriending the Madrigal family.
Juliana first grew close to Mirabel, both girls being explorative and bold, before becoming havoc makers with Camilo. Of course, the two grow crushes on one another cause what's Disney without romance. Mirabel was still dragged along in their schemes, despite the two’s growing emotions.
Adding more into classical Disney, the happiness the family found didn't last long(maybe a month). Markus soon tracked the family to the Valley and he and his men attacked, setting fire to the village houses, leaving only the Madrigal house standing. Before leaving, Markus demanded the return of Joanne and Deidra.
With emotions high, the Mendoza family was immediately blamed for the attack, some even demanding they hand over the named women. But, with some calmed words and arguments from Mirabel, with backup from her family, does demands were quickly squashed,  leaving more 'what to do' questions.
After some arguments, agreements and planning, a plan was reached and the Madrigals and Mendozas set out to face Markus and his men. When they reached the brigades' camp(found just at Pedro's River), Alma demanded the brigade leave and never return to the Valley. Determined and cocky, Markus refused an demanded to have Joanne and Deidra brought to him, the two women having stayed behind in the village.
With the refusal, the attack began. Isabella used her plants to destroy tents, Antonio used his animals to chase soldiers away and convinced the horses to flee while Camilo shapeshifted to turn Markus's men against one another and Juliana and Mirabel set fire to the men's supplies and weapons, Juan and Alanso fighting men head on while Reyes faced Markus.
Eventually, Markus and his men were forced to retreat and the rallied Madrigals and Mendozas returned home. It was soon decided to reclose the mountain and, with Luisa's and Isabella's powers, it was soon done and the Encanto Valley was left in peace and to celebrate.
That's the gist of Juliana's tale, but, of course, there are some in-between dialog and story, but some things aren't concrete and haven't been thought up.
If you've read this far, thanks and I hope you like my OC's story, which is basically Encanto 2.

Rectify errors and strengthen the Party! Unite and lead the broad masses of the Filipino people in fighting the US-Marcos regime! Advance the people’s democratic revolution!
CPP Central Committee | Communist Party of the Philippines
Filled with boundless revolutionary vigor, optimism and joy, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Philippines extends its warmest militant greetings to the entire membership of the Party on the occasion of its 55th anniversary. Today, let us celebrate the achievements of the Party and all revolutionary forces during the past year in arousing, organizing and mobilizing the people in anti-imperialist, anti-feudal and antifascist struggles and advancing the people’s democratic revolution. At the same time, let us self-critically point out our weaknesses, shortcomings and errors in order to rectify and overcome them, and make even greater strides in the coming year.
Let us pay tribute to Ka Jose Maria Sison, founding chairman of the CPP Central Committee, whose first death anniversary we commemorated last December 16. Let us pay homage to Benito Tiamzon, Wilma Austria, Julius Giron, Mariano Adlao, Jorge Madlos, Menandro Villanueva, Antonio Cabanatan, Dionisio Micabalo, Eugenia Magpantay, Alfredo Merilos, Dennis Rodina, Agaton Topacio, Randall Echanis, Rosalino Canubas, Sandra Reyes, Ezequiel Daguman, Emmanuel Fernandez, Rolando Leyson Jr, Helenita Pardalis, Rogelio Posadas, Jude Fernandez, Josephine Mendoza and all the many heroes and martyrs of the Filipino people and the Philippine revolution. During their lifetime, they made great sacrifices and made invaluable contributions to the Filipino people’s cause of national and social liberation.
The Party will forever treasure the legacy of Ka Joma. For more than five decades, Ka Joma was an indefatigable worker of the Philippine revolution and served as its inexhaustible beacon. He further enriched the theory of Marxism-Leninism-Maoism through its application on the concrete conditions of Philippine society and by setting out the strategy, tactics and tasks of the Philippine revolution. Ka Joma’s body of work will remain a crucial guide for the revolutionary and democratic forces in carrying forward the national democratic revolution to complete victory.
The Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Philippines recognizes the sacrifice of all proletarian cadres and members of the Party who continue to selflessly serve the Filipino people’s cause for national democracy and its socialist perspective. Imbued with the communist spirit of giving everything they can to the cause of the working class and all toiling people, they shoulder all the mountainous tasks for advancing the revolution in their fields of responsibilities.
We extend our revolutionary greetings to the thousands of young cadres who joined the ranks of the Party during the past few years, and who are injecting immense energy to our protracted struggle. Many of you are now performing important tasks of leadership as members of the Party’s central organs, as commanders and political officers of the New People’s Army, and leaders of the revolutionary mass movement in both the cities and countryside. Deeply rooted among the broad masses of workers and peasants, the young generation of Filipino communists are displaying infinite determination to bring the Philippine revolution forward into the future.
On this occasion of commemorating our founding anniversary, the Central Committee extends its solidarity with all anti-imperialist, progressive and democratic forces around the globe who are waging militant resistance against national oppression and wars of aggression. We extend fraternal greetings to all our proletarian class sisters and brothers across the world who are promoting and applying Marxism-Leninism-Maoism on the concrete conditions of their countries and leading the workers and toiling people in their struggle for liberation and socialism.

Sebastian Moran and "The Empty House" in Spanish
When I read "La aventura de la casa vacía", the translation into Spanish of "The Adventure of the Empty House" many years ago I didn't pay too much attention to Sebastian Moran, I was just happy to see Sherlock back from the dead after "El problema final" (original title "The Final Problem"). I'm not sure but probably I read both stories the same day because my work was shit and the city I was living was shit I could.
This is how Watson describes Moran:
It was a tremendously virile and yet sinister face which was turned towards us. With the brow of a philosopher above and the jaw of a sensualist below, the man must have started with great capacities for good or for evil.
(Emphasis by me)
"Sensualist"... WHAT IS THAT?
Ok, I'll read this part translated by Juan Manuel Ibeas:
El rostro que nos encaraba era tremendamente viril, pero de expresión siniestra, con la frente de un filósofo por arriba y la mandíbula de un depravado por abajo.
"Depravado"? Ok, that changes everything. Sensualist can be defined as "somebody who seeks pleasure" or hedonist. This makes me think about Moriarty the Patriot's Moran.
Tumblr media
Cigarettes, alcohol, gambling and women. This Moran is a huge sensualist.
Depravado can be translated as depraved, perv, or somebody with flawed morals. The first two uses are more common currently and mostly used as sexual deviant, so my image of this Moran is...
Tumblr media
Happosai from Ranma 1/2, a classic representation a perv that is obviously a perv according to Victorian standards (?) So, yeah... this is hard! -swears in Chilean-
Another thing that I noticed was the small talk between Holmes and Moran:
“You fiend!” he kept on muttering. “You clever, clever fiend!” “Ah, Colonel!” said Holmes, arranging his rumpled collar; “‘journeys end in lovers' meetings,’ as the old play says. (...)"
Tumblr media
Moran recognise how Holmes outsmarted him, and Holmes takes time to quote Twelfth Night, Or What You Will from Shakespeare (know in Spanish as Noche de Reyes o La duodécima noche). The quote is very romantic. Context of the quote here because I haven't read that play in English.
In the translation some part of the magic is lost:
Y no dejaba de murmurar entre dientes: —¡Maldito demonio! ¡Maldito demonio astuto! —¡Ah coronel! —dijo Holmes, arreglándose el arrugado cuello de la camisa—. Nunca es tarde si la dicha es buena, como dice el refrán.
Moran recognise Holmes' cleverness but in this case Holmes use an old proverb that is so old that it appears in many classical Spanish books like Juan Varela's El comendador Mendoza (1876) and Miguel de Unamuno's Abel Sánchez (1917). This proverb is used as "better late than never".
Translation is a hard work, and reading both versions is good exercise along watching many adaptations.

🎭 Teatro: “LA ÓPERA DE DOS CENTAVOS” 🗡💰🐒 @operade2centavos
✍️ Dramaturgia: Bertolt Brecht  (Alemania)
