The pulpit is not the place for personal testimonies, political speeches, group therapy sessions, motivational talks, self-help advice, worldly philosophies, or scientific theories. The pulpit is the throne of the Word of God. Therefore, the sacred text must be the priority of our preaching.

Gluttony, one of the more obvious modern sins, is generally tacitly accepted. Little is said about it from the pulpit. It is too embarrassing; it gets down too close to where the people, often including the preacher, live. No one who is fat dares to preach about it—he has no room to talk. Seldom will one who is not fat have the courage to broach the subject, for he will be told he has no business to talk since he has never "had a weight problem." (How does anyone know? Maybe he practices what he preaches.) Who then is left to talk? While a very small percentage of people are overweight for physiological reasons, the vast majority simply eat too much of the wrong things.

Preaching on the reality of hell wasn’t unique to Edwards or any of the Puritans for that matter. Jesus taught the reality of hell and preachers throughout history took his words literally.

Yet one will rarely find a sermon like Sinners in the Hands of An Angry God ringing from pulpits today. Our culture tells us not to preach on wrath lest we hurt someone’s self-esteem. They say we should start with the love of God then get to hell later (if we get there at all). We don’t want to scare them away with outdated hellfire preaching.

But for Jesus, Paul, Augustine, Luther, Edwards, Spurgeon, Graham, Sproul, and all the great preachers, God displays the fullness of the light of his love against the dark background of hell.

Hell is real.

The medieval market place in Bremen features many old and interesting buildings. In addition to the Rathaus, The Cathedral of St. Peter has 1200 years of history. Among it’s many treasures are the remains of the old choir stalls built in 1630. The oldest portion of the cathedral dates bate to the 11th century.
