Arachnoid
Part 2: Little Spider
At nine o'clock the next morning, Rory is sitting in her lab, face turned down looking into a microscope, thinking about a certain blonde woman.
"Gosh, she was beautiful," Rory mumbles to herself.
"Sorry, what was that? Didn't quite catch it," a raspy unfamiliar voice says.
"Oh, jesus!" Rory yells. She turns around, and standing there is the Black Widow. "W-what are you doing here at my place of work, M-miss Black Widow?"
"Hm, you're cute, Arachnid."
"Would you keep your voice down!" Her pitch is an octave higher than usual. "And it's Arachnoid. I resemble a spider. I'm not actually a spider. Oid, not id."
"Oh, okay. So like hemorrhoids," the redhead shrugs. Rory responds with a glare.
"What are you doing here? Shouldn't you be off saving the world or something?"
"Nothing to save it from at the moment. Thought I'd do a little digging to pass the time," she shrugs. "Rory Jade LaCroix. Born September 30, 1996. About 5'8", 150ish pounds. Your parents, James and Diana LaCroix, died in a car accident when you were seventeen, although that was likely a cover story. Your sister Hailey passed later that night in the hospital from her injuries. Three years ago, your girlfriend, Abby Smith, was murdered. You were the prime suspect. The case has since run cold. You have enhanced abilities such as super strength, web production, magnified senses, and even more that aren't yet on file."
Rory is tense and on edge at the mention of her family. Nobody talks about her family. "Alright, okay, I get it-"
"You attended Columbia University with a double major in Biomedical Engineering and Chemical Engineering. You also had minors in computer science, forensic science, and psychology. You really took advantage of that full ride they gave you, huh? Good for you, I respect that. Now you work here. Duquesne Scientific Advancements. They pay pretty well, but you're bored here, aren't you? Can't blame you. I've never been one to sit behind a desk, either."
"What's your point, Widow," Rory asks with a clenched jaw. "I already knew you were looking into me."
"Oh, you did? And how did you know that?" she quirks a brow. Rory doesn't let herself be intimidated, instead relaxing her shoulders and falling into a mindset of playful banter.
"Since you clearly know so much about me, why don't you tell me?" she smirks. If the redhead doesn't know about EDNA, she'd rather keep it that way. It could be quite advantageous. The Widow returns the smirk.
"You're quite a character, LaCroix. You could be a useful asset to us."
"And if I don't want to join SHIELD?"
Natasha bristles at the fact that Rory knows the name of the top secret organization, but she doesn't show it. Rory is extremely intelligent. She knows a lot more than she lets on.
"Well, it's your decision, of course. But I'm sure my sister would love to see you around more often."
"Sister? I don't know your sist– oh. You mean the blonde? From the other night?"
"Mhm."
"Huh. Um, well, I'll think about it, Miss Black Widow. For now, I should really get back to work."
"Alright, then. I'll see you soon, LaCroix." The redhead leaves the lab, and Rory lets out a shiver. That was fucking terrifying.
~
"She certainly didn't jump at the opportunity to join SHIELD," Natasha tells Nick. "But I think she'll come around. She's too smart for the job she has now. Too energetic. She's like a little puppy, it's disgusting. She wants to get out and do more good, I know it. And she's got a major crush on Yelena, so."
"Oh, joy. So you recruited a lovesick puppy?" Director Fury grumbles with a frown.
"Hey, this was your idea," she smirks.
"I suppose it was. What did you tell her?"
"I told her that I know who she is," Natasha shrugs, "And that she'd be useful here."
The Director hums in thought. "Don't lose her, Romanoff. I want this kid on my side."
~
"EDNA, who's she talking to?" Rory whispers as she watches the redhead move gracefully down the crowded New York streets.
"She is texting a contact saved as 'YB'. The text reads 'I'm being followed'."
"Oh, shit," Rory mutters.
"YB says 'By whom?' The target says 'A knockoff Spiderman'."
"Oh that is so rude," Rory whines.
"Would you like me to implode the cellular device? It will not kill her, but it will do some serious damage."
"No thank you, EDNA. That's very sweet of you, though."
Despite her cover being blown, Rory continues to move from rooftop to rooftop, wondering where the redheaded SHIELD agent will lead her.
The woman enters a worn down apartment building, and Rory watches from a nearby roof. After a few minutes, nothing happens so she moves closer. She uses her advanced hearing to locate the Widow's voice. Once she does, she crouches down on the fire escape, peeking in through the window. She listens intently to the conversation inside.
"How long was she following you?"
"I don't know. I didn't see her for the last few blocks. I think I might've lost her."
"Hm, or you're losing your edge and she's standing right outside that window," the blonde says, pointing to where Rory is currently crouched down out of sight. Every muscle in her body is tense, but relaxes when she realizes that they don't actually know she's there.
"Fuck off, Yelena." The sisters move onto a more mundane conversation as Rory drifts off into her thoughts. Yelena. It's nice to put a name to the face. Holy shit I feel like a stalker right now, she thinks to herself. Clearly they don't think Rory is a threat, she realizes.
She sighs, feeling like she's invading their privacy, even though she's just trying to protect herself. She moves to make her escape, and accidentally knocks over a potted plant that she hadn't seen. Oh shit. With her heart thrumming in her ears, she doesn't hear the footsteps approaching.
"Oh, come on! That was my favorite plant!" the blonde–Yelena–complains.
"Um...oops?" Rory shrugs. "I was actually just leaving, so..."
"Nuh-uh. Come inside. Come. We need to have a talk, little spider."
"Yes, ma'am," Rory deflates.

Ooh what's Bad Bones?
It's a short story I'm kicking around. This baby's got it all:
generational trauma
nature-as-gothic
heavily symbolic dead steel mills
a shit ton of rivers
just rust belt things
goth lesbians
a murder mystery
home remodeling (i learned it from you, anne)
Thank you for the ask! Sorry it's not vc related 😅
Excerpt:
These Appalachian foothills are older than the Atlantic Ocean, which sundered them from what are now the Scottish Highlands. Older than the moon, maybe. They might have been taller than the Himalayas once, worn down over unthinkable eons, and the fossils inside them are ancient and strange. I used to go hunting for them in the shale, a serious and lonely child, splitting rocks to find the ghosts of ferns. Seeing the skeletal ridges of land again after months or years away, I can always feel their age.
Anna looks over at me from the driver’s seat and grins at the song that’s just come on the radio (Tom Petty's "American Girl"), her black hair caught in the hot green-smelling wind. Soon we’ll be poking around the hundred-year-old rooms of all the little houses we can maybe afford in the city, old frame constructions of the kind realtors call good bones.
As we crawl up the winding tree-lined way to Mt. Washington for a showing, Anna points out a derelict red brick house crawling with weeds and honeysuckle, the rotting front porch sagging like skin, a blue tarp hanging from the upper window like the tattered sail of a ghost ship.
“Good bones,” she drawls in a vampire voice and bites at my shoulder through dark denim, making me laugh.
“Mm, yeah.” The weather is unusually sunny, and the scent of grass and hot pavement is making me crave a cigarette, an old adolescent vice. “Meat’s a little stringy though.”
Just past this neighborhood, at the western peak of the ridge across the river from the lean dark skyscrapers of downtown, is an area called Duquesne Heights, once known as Coal Hill. Its houses are notorious for foundation issues caused by mine subsidence. My grandmother’s house was built in a similarly precarious place, on top of abandoned coal pits that could swallow a house without warning. Once after a lightning storm, the old strip mines caught fire underground and coal smoke rose up from unseen holes in the ground like the mouth of hell was open. I remember being terrified of falling through the sweet grassy earth and into the burning coal. It was a fear that never really went away.
My dad always avoided the basement of his childhood home—bad bones down there.

Do you have recommendations for what to do and see in Pittsburgh? And is it easy to get around by bus/subway etc?
anon I’m so sorry, I started replying to this at the airport on my way home then saved it to drafts and forgot to go back and publish, oops! anyway…
ok, please bear in mind I am just a person who has visited a few times so this is in no way exhaustive, and will obviously be coloured by how easy things are to get to without a car and things I personally find interesting!
presented in no particular order…
heinz history centre & sports museum
go for a wander through the strip district
fort pitt museum & point state park
national aviary (fun on its own but would thoroughly recommend the penguin encounter as an extra)
andy warhol museum
carnegie science centre (though I just went to a specific exhibit so I don’t actually know about the museum as a whole but I liked what I visited)
walk the three rivers heritage trail along the north shore & visit the mister rogers statue (and I always enjoy walking over one or other of the three sisters bridges to get across from downtown and back afterwards)
take a trip on the inclines (duquesne is the prettiest and has the best views of the city at the top but personally I like to go up the mon - when it’s not closed that is - walk along grandview then come back down via duquesne)
point of view sculpture (just a bit further along grandview from the duquesne incline)
pittsburgh has a couple of theatres so it’s always worth checking out what’s on during your trip, and pittsburgh has some great restaurants/bars to check out too.
also, not really a “thing to do” but I will never get tired of arriving via the fort pitt tunnel when coming in from the airport and downtown just explodes in front of you as you emerge!
there are some other places I haven’t visited yet but are on my list, including the zoo & aquarium, phipps conservatory, carnegie museums of art and natural history, the frick, and randyland.
on the second question, downtown & the areas close by are very walkable but I find it is pretty easy to get around on public transport, yes. PRT now has an app (ready2ride) that includes a journey planner and live trackers (amongst other stuff), lets you buy a range of different types of pass that you then use by just scanning your phone when you get on, and which covers buses, light rail and the inclines. as someone who lives in london and is used to just tapping my phone to travel on public transport, this was way easier for me than having to think about paying fares every time and took a lot of anxiety out of using buses!
the T (light rail) is also free between downtown and the north shore - all the stops between first avenue and allegheny - which is handy! I also think it’s neat that most bus stops have a QR code you can scan for live arrivals info, which also helps you check you’re at the right stop :)

Clint is sprawled out on the jailhouse’s thin bunk, tattered and trail-worn and sun-kissed as all get out, with his dusty old cowboy hat placed centrally on his chest. Bucky’s trying to finish writing a report for the sheriff, but it’s a little hard to focus when Clint is crooning a gentle love song about his damned eyes.
“Carry on like that and you’re gonna get the both of us killed,” he says eventually. He knows he’s moved silently, years of practice with these worn boards, but Clint had started smiling just as soon as Bucky had got near like the idiot could somehow feel it.
“Nothing much better than dying for love, right?” Clint’s voice is still low enough that no one could catch them unawares, but that doesn’t disguise the laugh in it, doesn’t put up the hackles on Bucky’s neck any less.
“I ain’t dumb enough to fall in love with a jailbird,” Bucky says flatly, and the hell of it is that that’s technically true - Clint was still in the circus when Bucky first got heart-sick over him, and all the petty thievery in the world couldn’t shift it once it’d started.
He knows well enough that he’s no more to Clint than an easy mark, a mattress to sleep on when Clint rolls back through town. These days Clint just laughs when Bucky arrests him, mischief sparkling in his eyes when he’s hauled out of the saloon by the scruff of the neck, and Bucky oughta know better than to ever let him out again. Ever let him back through the fixed-up door of the cabin he’s been working on, back between hopeful-clean sheets.
Still, Bucky’s never been known for the wisdom of his choices, and as if to underscore that he has to force himself back two paces when Steve comes charging out back to the cells.
“Grab your gun,” he says, and instantly Bucky’s on high alert just from the squaring of his jaw.
“What’ve we got?”
“Jacques Duquesne’s on his way to town.”
Clint scrambles to his feet, a flurry of motion in the corner of Bucky’s eye as he straps on his gun belt and loads his gun.
“Guess he’s lookin’ for a fight.”
“No.” Clint’s voice is cracked in the middle, suddenly unsuited for singing. “Bucky -”
“Deputy Barnes,” Steve whip-crack corrects him, ‘cos he always tries to protect Bucky from his own stupid just like Bucky does for him. Clint doesn’t even spare him a glance.
“Bucky, you gotta let me out.”
“He’s not gonna get to you,” Bucky says tightly, and he doesn’t look at Clint because in front of the goddamned Sheriff is no place for kisses, and what the hell else is he ever able to do?
“That’s not - Bucky.”
Bucky keeps walking, even though he’s never heard Clint so desperate before. Not when Bucky arrested him the first time, not when he’s pled so fervently with Bucky in the bedroom, not even when he was delirious from the arrows through his shoulders, begging for his Pops to leave him the hell alone.
“Don’t worry Barton,” he says, “I’m gonna keep you safe.”
*
Clint’s act wasn’t as an escape artist, but Bucky’s somehow not surprised when he feels someone at his shoulder, squinting past him at the dust cloud that’s just become visible on the road into town.
“You’ve got a decent head start,” Bucky tells him. “You should take it.”
“And ruin my legacy?” Clint asks, tone playful even as he bends to rest his head on Bucky’s shoulder, just a moment’s warmth before he stands again and sqaures his stance. “I’m gettin’ songs written about me, Deputy. After all, there’s nothing much better than dying for love.”

(joe keery, he/him/his, cismale) who is theo clark anyways? ew. you don’t know about him, we’ll bet you want to. they’re feeling thirty and singing karaoke feels like a perfect night to them. rumor has it they’re indecisive and have low self-esteem because they care, but they’re also intelligent and adaptable in the best way. he works to make a little money as an employee at the animal shelter (...but he also walks dogs on rover on the side). they’ve rented on a place on cornelia street in the form of an an apartment. back to december and long live are the song they could dance to the beat of forevermore. (tw: cancer, about 3/4's of the way into the "backstory" section here!)
basics.
full name: theodore james clark. nicknames: honestly? most people just call him theo, though teddy is a family nickname he'd probably still respond to. gender/pronouns: cismale/he/him/his. sexual orientation: extremely bisexual. birthday: july 22nd. star sign: cancer. cancers are known to be highly intuitive, sensitive...and insecure. occupation: proud employee of the animal care center of new york...and he walks dogs for rover on the side.
personality.
positive traits: intelligent, adaptable, caring, honest, empathetic. negative traits: realistic pessimistic, indecisive, blunt, sensitive…but like not talking about those feelings ever?,  low self esteem while being self-centered. hogwarts house: i know jrk sucks and we do not claim her but the man is a hufflepuff…but a burned one. alignment: chaotic neutral. ennegram: 4w5. personality type: infj.
backstory.
his childhood was normal. happy, even. except for the part where his parents never let him have a dog because they were 'too busy' for one.
because his parents both had pretty demanding jobs, he was put in a ton of after school activities, but he kind of sucked at sports. so he joined boy scouts and took a bunch of different music lessons. he's pretty decent at guitar and piano and can fake his way through some accordion in a pinch.
theo is the oldest of three and was the child his parents placed their hopes on. his mother is a well-known pediatric oncologist at pittsburgh children's hospital and his father teaches biology at carnegie mellon. everyone assumed that theo would follow in their footsteps. and he did...sort of
he studied biology even though it wasn't really his thing because he wasn't paying for college, his parents were...and he minored in both music theory and psychology, which he liked more.
he met one of he most important people in his life while attending duquesne university in caroline davis.
...they didn't hit it off right away. in fact, at first, she was a bit of a thorn in his side. but a little bonding over a mutual love of music (and the food trucks on campus...) and they clicked. he asked her out around homecoming that first year and the rest is history.
they dated for years. it was very serious. he was two weeks away from buying a ring, honestly. but they spent a really big chunk of their relationship long-distance and it was just...hard. he really fucking loves loved her. but you know what they say...if you love it, let it go. or whatever.
during college, he made spending money at a work study job at the school library, but he made more walking dogs so he quit the work study job and started pet-sitting and dog walking most evenings.
this is where his love of animals began and only started to grow the more he spent times with classmates' and neighbors' pets. he decided to apply to vet school instead of med school, much to his mom's chagrin.
he got in!
...and he dropped out 2 semesters in because he hated it.
theo kept up a pretty big lie for the better part of a year, working odd jobs around pittsburgh and maintaining his off-campus apartment and dodging his parents' questions...until his dad was a guest lecturer to one of his vet school classes and he was nowhere to be found.
his parents gave him two choices: go back to vet school or go back to college and get a degree he would use.
theo chose neither. he packed up his shit, hopped on a bus, and moved to new york city with a collection of cassette tapes, a duffel bag of clothes, and whatever was left in his bank account to his name.
his parents didn't exactly disown him during this period, but they didn't reach out. he found out his mom was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer about 2 months after his move...and she'd been diagnosed a month prior. he heard it from one of his siblings and tried to reach out, but didn't get a response.
she passed away eight months after her diagnosis. he never got a chance to make amends and it's one of his biggest regrets.
he has since reconciled with his dad, but that's something that just..you don't just get over that. he's struggled with it mightily and with the help of a good therapist, he's starting to forgive himself. some.
he intended on reconnecting with caroline when he got there but...well, that didn't turn out so well.
so he couch surfed for a while until he could accept the first non-sketchy craigslist roommate ad he could find and moved into his cornelia street apartment.
he's not sure what he wants to do, really, so he's worked a lot of odd jobs since moving to the city. he's worked at almost every starbucks in an eight block radius of his apartment, bartended for a while, tried his hand working a food truck...but nothing seemed to stick. he paid rent by ubereats-ing most months, until he started walking neighbors' dogs and found something he kind-of-doesn't-hate.
during this in-between time is when he sort of got back into music. one job, he played piano in a restaurant's main dining room. another was a bar where he sweet talked his way into a few gigs. probably ended up meeting the rest of the electric touch crew during this period!
now he's working at the animal shelter, walking dogs using rover, and playing some gigs on the side. thank god for dogs and music.
plots n' stuff.
a roommate. or a few? i could see him having a few to keep costs low and i didn't snag any of the premade skellies for this so if you're down i'm down
found family/besties. i love those vibes especially given he's essentially upped and move away from home knowing like 2 people in the entire city.
people with dogs. either people whose dogs he walks or neighbors who happen to have them. he's like a dog whisperer so if you need a pet sitter he's your guy.
or! shelter volunteers!!!
people from any and all odd job he used to have. like a regular at the coffee shop who can't get their order right now because he left or a co-worker who helped him create a sandwich that's still on a menu at a local restaurant?
random hookups would be an option tbh. he came to new york intending to, like, win back his ex in some kind of rom-com bullshit way, but...well, it hasn't worked out so far.
someone who thought their hookup was more serious than it was would be kind of funny too. we live for miscommunications.
would love some kind of enemies/animosity plot. we'd have to talk it through. could've started with something little and spiraled or maybe they're just besties with caroline and are on her side. or maybe he accidentally ran over your muse's dog's tail on his bike :/
i'm dani. 32. friendly, promise! and i'm open to plotting pretty much anything, honestly! DM's here or on discord are always open to figure some stuff out. i'm danisaurus. over on discord and i'm really looking forward to writing with you all!

《L’anxiété technocratique en France : les romans du Fleuve Noir « Anticipation », 1951-1960》 par Bradford Lyau Traduction de Simon Bréan
Peter RANDA

No page break used… that’s the point. This isn’t even every school. It doesn’t take into account grocery stores, movie theaters, workplaces, public parks, malls, hair salons, bowling alleys, concerts, dance halls, nightclubs, yoga studios, places of worship, fucking “Independence” Day parades…. The list is endless. We are a sad, inept, violent nation incapable and unwilling to protect even our most vulnerable citizens.
Takes a long time to scroll thru the list and unless laws are changed, the list will get longer.

Note
why do ppl assume you from pittsburgh
Hello anon
Usually its cause of the words I use. Like yinz. Or nebby. Or pop. Occasionally I do also just mention places/things near by. Like posting concert pics the day after and when you look to see where said band was, it was Pittsburgh. Or people who follow my main get to see me ranting about pittsburgh related things occasionally too like monthly meetings up in Duquesne and things like that
Honestly I got asked about it enough that I just put it in my bio thingy lololol

Pre-Pittsburgh: Memo and Personal Statement
This fake comic takes places two hundred and seventy ago, in my hometown. Pittsburgh’s cherished founding stories traditionally begin with a cameo from historical a-lister, young George Washington, on his hero’s journey. The Old Block House and the Fort Pitt museum literally stand today as physical testaments of imperial ambition in a bygone age that made the city what it is today. The stories of George Washington and Fort Pitt have been told over and over again since time immemorial, so what is there new to say in retelling this story in fake comic form?
First off, this fake-comic is rife with tooty-fruity images of “Ohio Country” between 1748 – 1755. Brick-by-brick and cell-by-cell the Pittsburgh tale slowly builds. While I usually start by just doing lots of studies of previous historical imagery of the place and time, my research left me wondering down other aspects less explored. While George Washington wasn’t the only military dude in the area, the traditional history tells of a syndicate of various military dudes that who came to the wild west of “Ohio Country” to establish imperial domain. There are also white traders and American chiefs as other “agents” that move the story along.
Pittsburgh is the 68th largest city in the United States, it’s one of many places that made contributions to a national historical narrative and it of course experienced national and global phenomena, aside from being home of the Steelers.
Generally, I’m more interested in social history over generation instead of the hijinks of individual military dudes. I just didn’t have the sources to make the entire narrative around Pittsburgh’s social structure of the eighteenth century. This fake-comic turned out to be more of an exercise in telling the old stories.
The book for this time period that really broadened my horizons was Into the American Woods by James Merrell that narrates the translators and negotiators between the state of Pennsylvania and Native American groups, mainly the Haudenosaunee, who were centered in upstate New York, but had claims to the region. Merrell’s interpretation of the events at Fort Duquesne and Fort Pitt are very different from other interpretations on the cause and effects transpiring at the forks of the three rivers. The native people who lived in the region, who had broken free of Haudenosaunee and allied with the French, even helping expel Braddock’s forces in 1755 against the English. History would remember Braddock as Pittsburgh’s first jagoff.
Perhaps in second installment I can present how critical the Ohio Native Americans were in determining which empire would be the victor.

A Day At The Beach - Calleigh Duquesne/Marisol Delko
A/N: Day 3 of @fluffbruary continues.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Marisol doesn’t much talk about her life, but she loves the beach. She loves the beach the way Calleigh loves guns. It’s light but it’s passionate and Calleigh always finds ways to get chances to take Marisol to the beach. This time they curl together on their blanket, Marisol’s giggle rewarded with Calleigh’s soft smile. They’ve both been through a lot but here, peaceful and together, it all feels that little bit less hectic. They can always just enjoy their day at the beach, even when they are both tired and need a place to rest. Calleigh’s touch is soft over Marisol’s bullet scar, her voice soft. “You are so perfect Marisol.” “Look who’s talking Sunshine girl.”
