The Buffalo Bills for the fifth straight season end the season with a playoff loss, 27-24 in their third home playoff loss ever, and second in two years to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Divisional Round of the 2023 NFL playoffs. This is the third time in four years that the Kansas City Chiefs have eliminated the Buffalo Bills in the playoffs. This loss was not as dramatic as last year’s loss at home to the Cincinnati Bengals or that last 10-seconds in the divisional loss to Kansas City two years ago. When the Bills got on the field Sunday, January 21st, 2024 they really Billlieved they were gonna win. The media had already been talking about how this was the Buffalo Bills year they would overcome Kansas City. However, the Chiefs had other plans. It is a disappointing loss, which makes for a disappointing season. The BillsMafia balled out this year. Not just during the season, but all the lead up to the playoffs. Hordes of fans waiting in lines, in freezing cold to help shovel snow out of the stadium. The wild card game verse Pittsburgh had to be postponed for a day due to the poor weather.
This review of the 2023 Buffalo Bills season is not going to be a splatter of throwing our people under the bus. We had a hell of a lot of adversity this year from injuries, ‘again…’ Even more so than the 2022 season. Our guys battled all year, but at the end of the day we lost. We didn’t get the pants beaten off us this time. We could have won this game and most feel we should have won this game. I felt like even if we did win that we probably would not have been able to beat Baltimore due to our defense being so rough against the run and the Ravens being a run-dominant team. However, after watching the AFC Championship game, I don’t know, maybe Allen and company might have sailed right past Baltimore. This will be another honest review based on what I saw with my own eyes and over thirty years of watching, playing, understanding the game of football.
With all that out of the way. Let’s Begin…
Tough for the Buffalo Bills to die out the way we did. Josh Allen, ‘the Alien,’ showed up. Our beat up defense, not so much. Sliced apart like warm butter most of the game. I am sure there are many that are blaming the kicking. Well our kicker should be paying better attention which direction the wind is blowing in the same area you live in but I guess that is what false hope looks like in pro football.
Our Defense was shaky most of the season due to another case of the injury-bug. However, unlike last year, the Bills were able to adapt much better with Coach McDermott calling the defense this year after Leslie Frazier announced he would not be back with the team for the 2023 season. Not fired, just that he would not coach in 2023. At this point he is no longer under contract with the Buffalo Bills. So if he does decide to coach again, it won’t be with Buffalo. The Buffalo Bills for 2024 definitely got some things to fix. We were exposed on defense in crucial situations due to these injuries. A play here, a play there. With the right people on the field, those plays never happen. However, Coach McDermott always had a fix in the game this year. This year the Bills stepped up there ‘situational football’ alertness. Injuries are not an excuse. Every team goes through them. We have been weak against the run for the past three seasons, but we showed a lot more mustard this season than we did in the past, and if it wasn’t for injuries we do not give up nearly as much as we did. We made adjustments in the 2023 offseason to beef up the defensive line and we started out well enough till the injuries began to pile up.
The Buffalo Bills have some free agency challenges heading into the 2024 season. We have 19 unrestricted free agents. It will be unlikely we will resign them all. Some of these guys were key to the Bills success and have earned a chance to either play to start or go somewhere else for more money.
• WR’s Gabe Davis, Trent Sherfield. • RB’s Latavius Murray, Damien Harris. • DE’s A.J. Epenesa, Leonard Floyd, Shaq Lawson. • DT’s DaQuan Jones, Linval Joseph, Tim Settle, Poona Ford, Jordan Phillips. • LB’s Tyrel Dodson, Tyler Matakevich. • CB’s Dane Jackson, Cam Lewis. • S’s Micah Hyde, Taylor Rapp. • QB Kyle Allen. • TE Quinton Morris (restricted)
On this list I feel six guys we absolutely need to resign are Trent Sherfield, A.J. Epenesa, Leonard Floyd, Dane Jackson, Taylor Rapp, and Poona Ford. I’d like to resign Gabe Davis but with the emergence of Trent Sherfield, Khalil Shakir and Dalton Kincaid it is going to be difficult to sign Gabe Davis under the expectation of more money in a new contract. Is he worth more money? I say yes, but his performances do not really warrant that. We really needed him to step up the last two years and he really hasn’t shown us that. If he is willing to come back to Buffalo and play for less money, then sign him, absolutely. However, if he demands more than we can pay him then we have to allow him to go and test the market. He is a starter in this league and at times has shown all-pro quality play, but it has been too far and in between. Jordan Phillips and Micah Hyde have stated they may retire, but as of the writing of this blog we have not heard from them that this is what they are going to do. Just ‘likely’ that they will retire. Be nice if we could get DaQuan Jones back as well. Buffalo made strides in the offseason last year by beefing up the defensive line, only for those strides to be hindered by injuries and now free agency.
While the NFL Salary cap is increasing for teams this offseason by about $16 million, the Buffalo Bills still find themselves in a tough spot, projected to be around $45 million over the cap. Stefon Diggs is set to carry around $28 million and Von Miller’s comes in close to $24 million. When we made Ken Dorsey our offensive coordinator we immediately signed some bigger bodied WR/TEs which led me to believe we would see a more run balanced offense using our same offensive package of three, four and five wide receivers, but now with two or three tight ends on the field at all times. Much like how our offensive game plan was for the divisional playoff loss to Kansas City two years ago. Run out of these bigger more spread out packages and push the ball down the field with deep throws and crossing patterns. We didn’t do that and the woes with Ken Dorsey as a play caller came to a halt after the week 10 home loss to the Denver Broncos. With the official signing of Joe Brady as the team’s offensive coordinator I would think Buffalo will return to this style of play or closer to the style of play Brady was calling with Joe Burrow at quarterback when LSU won the National Championship in the 2020 College Football Season. We only saw glimpses of what the offense could be during the final stretch of the regular season. Granted, this offense had problems hooking up with Diggs for nearly two thirds of the season, but I would think the Bills will see this on film and make adjustments going into 2024. Diggs is virtually open on every play but defenses did a better job of taking him out the game plan. Buffalo did adapt to this and spread the ball around, but you cannot just not throw to Diggs. We saw earlier in the year that man is so hard to get a solid hit on that he winds up breaking tackles for more yards. The man can still ball out…
The Bills sign longtime assistant coach Bobby Babich as their new Defensive Coordinator. Babich has been with the Bills and Coach McDermott since 2017 and even before that with McDermott when he was in Carolina. He started as the secondary coach, excelled there and moved up to linebacker coach where the line backing core were standouts and has now been officially hired as the Bills defensive coordinator. It is too early to tell whether he will be the play caller on defense as of yet, but even if he is or isn’t he will be working with Coach McDermott on the defense as a whole. This will take pressure off Coach McDermott, which at times during the season we needed someone to help in a more official capacity on defensive adjustments in game and even call plays when Coach McDermott needs to have attention in other areas during the game. One of the main points here is that this is an extension to what the Bills have already been doing. This just makes it official. Coordinators work directly with the head coach, but it always felt the Coach MeDermott would say something and the coordinators would say something else. With Dorsey and before that, Frazier on defense, were not seeing eye-to-eye with Coach McDermott. I always felt Coach McDermott would say something in a press conference and it would just go over both those guy’s heads. I felt like Frazier should have been fired after the 10-second meltdown in Kansas City, but it took another year for him to leave the Bills. Coach McDermott likes to promote from within. The team spends just as much time, energy on their coaching staff as they do their young players, building them up and making them work for us.
Babich was getting interviewed for defensive coordinator positions from the Green Bay Packers, the New York Giants and the Miami Dolphins. We sure as hell were not going to let him go to Miami, where we play the Dolphins twice a year and this year playing them in week 18 for the divisional title. On paper this is more of a big deal than it is on the field as Babich is already a huge part of our defense and now he has the title to go with it. The one thing that we can build on is depth. That when we are at full strength we know our backup guys can do the job and they can. Sure there are/were holes, but we did a great job of hiding those holes most of the time. Granted, not all of the time, which is why we are not playing the 49ers in the Super Bowl and the Chiefs are. At full strength we will now have a better understanding of depth at those positions, but we did not adjust well to these injuries. Instead of doubling down with our strategy we needed to make better adjustments with matchups on the field, on both sides of the ball. You do not run nickel/dime/zone packages and never blitz when your defense is that beat up, both on the line and secondary. Once you lose the threat of a pass rush from the front four; running a zone will kill your defense. I have seen it time and time again. Zone can work, but your front four has to get pressure on the quarterback or they will find holes in the zone and just dink and dunk you to death. The defense cannot recover fast enough under that sort of pressure and they didn’t. We just kept doing it over and over again. When Coach McDermott mentions making adjustments this is what I feel he means. Not just on the defensive side of the ball, but the offensive as well. Coach mentioned making adjustments as a priority in the press conference after last year’s loss to the Bengals and I billlieve that is what we did much better at this year. Our offensive coaching needs to fully understanding the weapons we have on a given situation with the players we have on the field. We saw this in the Kansas City game with plays specifically for Shakir. I think we will see more of this in 2024. At least, I really hope we do anyway.
Coach McDermott was far less patient and lenient this season with defending his coaches as we parted ways with Frazier, thank the football Gods for that one, and the firing of Ken Dorsey two thirds into the season. The writing was on the wall, but coach is super loyal to his people. However, this year the leash was far tighter. I do not billieve that will be a problem in 2024. The coaching staff is set, mostly all guys promoted from within. We cannot be too cute anymore. It is time on third and three to run the ball with efficient play calls that favor us and do not rely on some scatter-garbage-junk-play that picks up the first down. We should get the first down not because we are bigger and can push the defense back, but more based on the strategy. However, our offensive line this year did push around a lot of good quality defensive lines. We did struggle here/there against really good defenses like Kansas City. I think next year we will have that in mind more and we will see some stuff that makes more sense. Almost like basketball where you have isolation plays. We still have match up nightmares when defenses try to play us. Sure, they were able to slowdown Diggs this year, but other guys stepped up and showed they can also make big plays. I am not saying its ok to not target Diggs. He is still the best player on the field catching/running with the football, but if you double him you still got to deal with Cook, Shakir, Kincaid, Knox, Sherfield. These guys made plays this year that Diggs would usually make. However, I see the Allen/Diggs show making a big comeback in stats in 2024.
The Situational football got better after the Philadelphia loss. I feel like Buffalo really got a better clamp on this, understanding how to play in the fourth quarter. We started winning matchups and games at the end of the year where I thought we were going to lose after what had happened so often in the past with us. We hadn’t played what I thought was great football since the first Miami game and we still almost pushed through all this. I do not billieve any sort of different game plan would have changed things against the Chiefs. We were just too beat up on defense to outright stop Kansas City, but I feel like we are right there. We are literally plays away from going to the show. If one only passively watched Buffalo Bills football this year this may come as a shock. Things were unraveling and Coach McDermott was able to right the ship, make a pretty good run with limited resources. Are we disappointed? Sure, of course we are, but I feel a whole lot better going into the 2024 season than I did the 2023 season. 2022 should have been our year and it wasn’t. We ran into troubles again, but this time I feel like we learned. Coach McDermott and General Manager Brandon Bean have their work cut out for them, but I think the team is moving forward in a really nice direction. We have amazing talent at every position, but we have to stay healthy, which has been the biggest challenge the past two seasons.
Down the stretch between injuries and all the other adversity surrounding this team this year we did play better complimentary football and it showed. Still got to give this team credit. If Jim Kelly, Thruman Thomas, Andre Reed, Bruce Smith and Steve Tasker know anything about adversity in the game of football it is these men. They know… This team also has its own unique taste to add to the adversity this franchise has faced. All too well and it tastes like Bantha Poohdo… We still have gap problems down the board due to injuries, an undersized line backing core, and not being able to get a steady pass rush. It just exposes our zone too much. We must get better at third and longs. This killed us this year. At the beginning of the year we made tackles behind the line of scrimmage. The last ten weeks or so I saw guys straight-up miss because they got their head down or take bad angles and it’s the same guys over and over. One cannot tackle what they cannot see. I see us making more changes on Defense. I think we really need to add something at the linebacker positon. The depth just isn’t there yet, but the young guys did step up, and the unit as a whole looks promising.
We need to take a step back with our offense and look how we ran the ball in those last six games of the 2022 and the 2023 season. As stated above, we bulked up at the skill position and we should go back to that. We can run the spread with four and five wide outs, who says that must be wide receivers? Put two tight ends there instead and run out of it. Run quick hitters out of that. We can still run our pass attack in this formation and it will make defenses go mad trying to get the right matchups to stop it. Plus, you have more blocking for the Alien runs. I don’t know what we are going to do at running back to back up Cook, but we need a bruiser. Perhaps resign Harris or if Hines is coming back, implement more of him in the game plan. Cook is great but it would be great to have a solid second runner in there that can drop a shoulder and get three yards.
Josh Allen is a goddamn Alien, but he cannot do it all by himself, all of the time. He is over 90% of our total offense. We need to take some pressure off this guy with a running game. He will still get his 300 yards and multiple touchdowns, but we have to use him smarter. This will be year seven and we cannot have our #1 guy taking all those bumps all of the time. We cannot have Allen running around the field and play backyard hero-ball all of the time with the expectation that is how we have to play to win. Maybe year one, two and three, but now in year seven? I felt like we relied too much on junk plays this year, again, to sustain our offensive output.
Next Season we play another first place schedule, the NFC West, plus the Detroit Lions, likely to be another Thanksgiving game, I am guessing. It’s a decent schedule and someone has to go backward. I do not think it will be us. We have been in the mix five years in a row now. I think we have learned a thing or two, or five. We have grown up a lot from these past seasons. I am predicting Josh, ‘the Alien,’ Allen is going to be the NFL MVP next year. I am going to put a few dollars on that once I find a good bet. I think the Bills lose maybe three or four games and the road to the Super Bowl will go through Buffalo. Our road schedule could be a tough one in 2024 going by just what I see on the surface. Some teams will improve while others are in full rebuild, so we will have to see how the offseason plays out and the draft. The draft now is more important than it has ever been. Young guys are coming into the league and making more an impact than they have ever before. The Bills have the 28th overall pick in the first round, and nine total draft picks. We have no third round pick but have two fifth rounders and three sixth round draft picks. At a glance we need wide receivers, defensive linemen and help at the secondary positions. We play a lot of our tougher opponents at home, including the 49ers. Home field advantage is a real thing, but we were so flat in the divisional game it didn’t matter. If we do learn, grow, get healthy, adjust, and ad to what we already have then we’ll be back playing meaningful games in mid to late January again. Our defense has been and still is a bend but don’t break defense and they played like it most of this year except for this last game and a handful of others. The Buffalo Bills lost six games in the regular season this year. Josh Allen left the field leading or tied in four of them. Now you can say our whole team, surrounding area, people, and culture is bend but don’t break and this will not break us.
We Will Rebuild…
Till next year. I am proud of the team. Time to work on me and leave all this behind till late summer 2024... I'd love to see someone shut Mahomes up... Please...
One Team, One City, One Love, OneBuffalo…

Most People Assume a Party Bus Pittsburgh Is Only for Local Trips
A Quality Company Will Also Take Clients Out Of State, Almost Wherever They Want To Go.
It may be easy to assume that a party bus in Pittsburgh is perfect for local trips. Whether it’s a school field trip, sporting event, or sightseeing adventure throughout the Steel City, it’s easy to get caught up in the notion that coach buses are simply only reasonable for local trips.

Among Us - Sweater Weather
an among us inspired sweater weather fic
characters and universe belong to @lumosinlove :)
1,033 words
“Okay, I mean it this time, no talking,” Logan said seriously. The teammates were crowded into Logan and Leo’s (and unofficially Finn’s) hotel room after their on-the-road win against Pittsburgh. It was late, and everyone was tired, but the adrenaline from the win kept everyone from wanting to sleep just yet, especially with the promise of a long bus ride in the morning to doze off during.
“And no giggling either, looking at you Tremz,” Thomas emphasized with a pointed index finger.
“Sorry. But that was only because I was the imposter last time, I won’t be it again this game anyway,” Logan said as the Start countdown began.
“Not how statistics work,” Remus mumbled. Sirius started to say something in return, but stopped as the shhh screen popped up. Someone in the hotel room was the imposter, and everyone else was innocent. All the competitiveness of being on the ice applied here.
The room was silent for a brief moment, but as the emergency meeting screen flared, all nine men began speaking at once. “What’s going on?” James’s voice carried over the others, looking at Pascal.
“Yeah, what’s going on?” Pascal asked, confused as to why all eyes were on him.
“Dumo,” a collective groan went out, drawing out the vowel.
“I think you’re the one who called the meeting,” Leo said politely, while Logan laughed, pushing his feet up into the blond’s lap.
“Oh,” Dumo said, squinting at the screen.
After the group unanimously voted to skip, the silence resumed. Remus stifled a smile as Sirius’s avatar, appropriately named Cap, followed him along as he went about completing his little tasks of connecting wires and downloading data.
“Oh my GOD,” Finn complained loudly, throwing himself back onto Leo’s previously neat stack of pillows.
“No talking,” Logan reminded him, but looked suspiciously amused. A moment later, his body was found and reported by James. Discussion broke out, everyone choosing to simply speak rather than use the chat feature, except for James’s insistent typing of variant spellings of inappropriate words, seeing what was and wasn’t censored.
“I want to point out how happy Logan looks right now,” Kasey suddenly spoke up.
“Quoi?” Logan spluttered. “If I was the imposter I wouldn’t have killed Finn first!”
“Well.” Leo patted Logan’s feet to soften the blow of his next words. “I feel like that’s exactly what you would have done.” The teammates laughed, and when the voting time started, they reluctantly (in some cases) voted out the red “TREMZ,” all capitals. Logan shouted at them when “was not an imposter” flashed on their screens.
“See! See! Whatever, I get to cuddle my boyfriend now,” Logan said. Finn laughed and opened his arms for him.
Remus could feel Sirius’s eyes on him and couldn’t help but laugh. “We can cuddle later,” Remus whispered.
“Yuck!” Thomas grimaced. “The no talking rule goes back into effect now.” Remus laughed, knowing that he and Sirius, and the cubs, both had Talker’s full support; he had already defended them to paparazzi and opposing players multiple times.
“Great, now I’m dead,” Dumo deadpanned. “And I never even figured out how to connect the wires,” he added in amazement, mostly to himself.
“Come cuddle with the other ghosts!” Finn welcomed, left arm extended, with Logan held tightly in his left.
“Mon fils,” Dumo said plainly, “no.”
After a few more moments, a black avatar named “POTTS” called an emergency meeting. “I saw Blizzard vent!” James announced. “And look, Talker is dead now but no one found his body.”
“I did not vent,” Kasey said simply, with a completely expressionless face.
“Woah, goalie face. So creepy!” James laughed. “Vote him out.”
Kasey was the imposter, and James whooped unnecessarily loud. “Whoever sleeps near this room is probably mad we’re being so loud,” Remus pointed out, feeling a little guilty for the noise that was (mostly) caused by the others.
“It’s gonna be loud later too,” Finn said with a smirk, before Leo cut him off by holding a pillow to his face.
“Gross, gross, okay, new game.” James stacattoed.
“Last game,” Remus amended. He knew that Coach would hold him accountable for Sirius’s sleep schedule no matter what now, and when he was the only non-player in a given room, Coach would rely on him to enforce some level of good decision-making.
As the game started, it was silent, with little gasps announcing a crewmate’s sudden death, but they hadn’t been reported until five of them had perished. This round’s imposter was not making any mistakes. After the team (incorrectly) voted out Leo, only Remus (Loops), Sirius (Cap), Thomas (Talkie), and James (POTTS) were left.
The lights in the game were sabotaged, and when they finally came back online, Remus was hiding a grin with one hand.
Sirius followed Remus to the security room, where Remus absentmindedly clicked on the camera button. Remus noted with amusement that “Cap” stayed at the entrance of the room, and didn’t follow him to the camera. He was likely trying to protect Remus from whoever the imposter was. Remus took a moment to appreciate how adorable and sappy and Sirius that type of behavior was, before also appreciating the fact that Sirius’s protectiveness meant he didn’t see James’s body on the screen right in front of the admin room’s camera.
As Remus’s kill cooldown hit five seconds, Talker joined them in the security room, and Sirius positioned his little crewmember body (black, he had insisted), in front of Remus’s cyan one. Talker, in purple, got the message and stayed by the door. Neither man knew that the three of them were the only ones left alive.
When Remus’s kill cooldown hit zero, he quickly and mercilessly killed Sirius, for the win. The silent room erupted in cheers, jeers, and laughter (mostly from Remus).
“I was protecting you,” Sirius whined, eyebrows stuck high on his forehead.
“Sorry baby,” Remus leaned over to give his betrayed boyfriend a peck on the lips. Sirius caught his arm and prolonged the kiss, to the dismay of some of the others.
Finn grinned, now holding a hand of each of his boys. “Bitch ass moves, Loops,” he said approvingly. “Bitch. Ass. Moves.”

Not So Dangerous Liaison - Sidney Crosby - Part 8
Word: 2,747
POV: Sidney’s
Warnings: Language as always
Notes: Well after the loss of all my edits, I can’t promise that I didn’t miss something, but I did re-edit it, so hopefully it’s ok. I have to say this is one of my favorite stories so far. Hope you guys like it as well. Happy Reading!
Not So Dangerous Liaison Masterlist
Tumblr media
Over the next couple of weeks, (Y/N) maintained a safe distance from you and the rest of the guys. She was still her smiley bubbly self; she just avoided any, one on one interactions, especially with you. It wasn’t really noticeable unless you were watching her every move, which you kind of were. Since the first round of playoffs, only took you to New York, it wasn’t as if you had a lot of free time. The games were close together, so when you were in the city, you were all focused on hockey, including (Y/N). Her primary concern was everyone on the team’s well-being, and it seemed the guys were really getting used to relying on her.
Things went so well that the first round against the Rangers was done in five games. The only problem with that, was that it put you back in Washington. You wondered how (Y/N) would handle going back there. You noticed that everyone had the same rooms from the last time you were here and you were half tempted to go check on her as the night went on, though you resisted. You noticed pretty much everyone stuck to the hotel the first couple nights, but when the team lost the first game in overtime; it was mandatory everyone stay in after that.
It was around midnight the night before game two, and you couldn’t sleep. You were totally hyped up for the game but also concerned about (Y/N). You headed down to the gym, thinking you could get a quick half-hour run in, hopefully using some of that excess energy. The hotel didn’t normally allow public access to the equipment this time of night, but (Y/N) had made sure that the team would be able to use it at all hours. It still startled you though, when you saw a female figure running on the treadmill when you opened the door. You didn’t have to see her face to know that it was (Y/N), you’d memorized her every curve since your time in the elevator together. She had her airpods in and didn’t notice you, so you took a moment to just drink in the sight of her all alone. She had on a tight pair of leggings with one of those sports bras that had multiple straps in the back, while her hair was in a ponytail; in your opinion, she looked like a goddess at that moment.
You cleared your throat, partly to let her know that you were there, but also because your mouth was literally dry from staring at (Y/N). She still didn’t notice you standing there, so you coughed a little louder in hopes of not startling her. She jumped, breaking her stride; quickly hitting the machine to stop. “Oh my god, you scared the hell out me.”
 “Sorry,” you whispered sheepishly.
She took her earbuds out then. “No, it’s my fault. I probably shouldn’t be here. Let me just wipe this down and I’ll get out of your way.” That was the last thing you wanted.
“Don’t,” well that came out a little bit harsh. “I mean…you don’t have to. It would be nice to have someone to talk to.” She nodded but didn’t say anything, and instead just got back on the treadmill, starting off at a slower pace. “Can’t sleep?”
 “Not really, you?”
“Same, I’m a little too keyed up for the game tomorrow.” You started a slow jog beside her, not quite the exhausting pace that you wanted to run, but you wanted to spend some time talking to (Y/N).
She smiled over at you then. “You know you’ll be great Sid. You always are.”
“Thanks,” It was an automatic reply, but then you decided to reveal a bit more about yourself, after all, she’d exposed a vulnerable part of herself the last time it was the two of you. “It’s a lot though. You know...the pressure to always be…well great.”
She looked over at you, a genuine sincerity to in her eyes and voice. “I can’t imagine.”
“I’m just always afraid I’ll be letting the team and everyone down.” If you were being completely honest, you would’ve told her that you also feared letting yourself down as well.
“Sid, you could never let anyone down. You’re the hardest working person on this team and everyone knows that. I know you’re under a tremendous amount of pressure, but go out there and just have fun.” She paused as if collecting her thoughts, then stopped the treadmill; you did as well. “I shouldn’t admit this, but I’ve seen you out there on the ice when no one else is around. There’s just so much joy on your face. It’s kind of contagious; you know. You look so at home there…and well that’s what you need to do; go out there and just play. Play like it doesn’t matter what happens, but because you love to do it; because I know you do.”
God, she was right. You wanted so badly to kiss her at that moment. You put so much pressure on yourself, that you forgot how much fun hockey was. “You remember that night a couple weeks ago when you told me I was good with the pep talks.” She nodded. “Well, you’re not so bad yourself.” A pretty pink blush crept up to her cheeks then, that had nothing to do with the exercising she’d been doing. “I’m just going to go out there and do what I love.”
“Good,” she returned back with that beautiful smile of hers.
“And if we ever need motivation in the locker room; I’m coming to get you.”
“I’ll hold you to that.” She glanced at the clock on the wall then. “It’s late. I think I’m going to head up.”
You didn’t really want your time alone with her to end, but she was right; you both needed sleep. “I’ll walk up with you if you don’t mind?"
“Not at all.” The two of you ended up in the same elevator you’d been trapped in only weeks ago. Part of you was hoping fate would step in and trap you again, but as the doors opened up onto your floor; you had no such luck.
“Thanks again.” You told her, wishing that you could do more than just say the words, thank you to her.
“Just part of the job.” She commented off-hand.
“It’s not, but it means more than you know.” She reached over and wrapped you in a hug then. Your arms instinctively tightening around her. Breathing deeply, you inhaled her scent; trying to engrain it into your memory. All too quickly she released you, and while you wanted to frown from the loss of contact; you found yourself smiling back at her.
 “Goodnight, Sid.”
“Night (Y/N).” She turned and started in the direction of her room, which was opposite yours. For a moment you stood there, just staring at her form. “Hey (Y/N),” at the sound of your voice she turned back around. “I’m glad you decided to stay.”
That smile had you rooted to your spot in the hallway. “Me too,” she breathed out, then disappeared into her room. You headed to your room, where you slept like a baby; dreams of (Y/N) filling your mind.
The following night, you couldn’t say that you had the best game of your life, but you did have fun, and that energy and enthusiasm transferred to everyone on the team. The Pens ended up winning that night as well as the next two games and they finished off the series in six games.
You wished you could say that the series in Tampa Bay went as easily. After a game five loss in Pittsburgh, the whole team was on edge and feeling a bit down. You had no idea that (Y/N) had approached Coach Sullivan with an idea to lighten the mood until you were told to meet on the bus for a workout session; everyone was to wear shorts and bring sunglasses. This didn’t sound like an ordinary practice. The bus trip took about forty-five minutes all of which (Y/N) was nowhere to be found. It finally ended at a remote beach location, hardly anyone was around, but there was (Y/N). She had a makeshift course made with cones, and ropes along with a beach volleyball court set up. There were towels, sunscreen, and coolers all set up as well, but what you noticed most, was the cute little jean shorts and crop top (Y/N) had on.
As you all headed over to where she was with a couple of the trainers, it was Coach Sullivan who explained what was going on. “So, it was brought to my attention,” he looked over and nodded to (Y/N). “That maybe you guys needed to blow off a little steam, but just because our location is different, doesn’t mean we’re not going to work out. So, with that, I’m turning this over to the trainers for the next hours. But for godsakes, put some sunscreen on first. I don’t need anyone whining of a sunburn.”
Over the course of the next hour, the trainers had you running sprints in the sand, doing lateral shuffles, along with some intervals; all of which, you did happily in the sunshine. As soon as the workout was over, (Y/N) had drinks set up as well as protein bars and fruit. “So, lunch will be here in an hour.” She declared to the group. “I’ve been told you’re free to enjoy yourself until then. There’s volleyball, footballs, frisbees, all kinds of things around; oh, and there’s always the water. Have fun guys.”
Marc-Andre grabbed her arm before she could run away. “Where do you think you’re going? You’ve gotta join the volleyball game.”
 “But lunch?” She protested.
“Is being prepared by someone, which means you’re free,” Kunitz told her dragging her onto the court. She threw her flip-flips off and gave into to everyone’s demands. She was on the same side of the court as you and you heard Chris casually answer. “Are you any good?”
“I haven’t played in a couple years, so don’t kill me if I suck.” Thank god it was just a friendly little game, and there were enough of the team around to cover up for any mistakes she might make.
She was standing beside you waiting for the first volley, when you heard her mutter, more to herself than you. “What have I gotten myself into?” You just sort of chuckled to yourself, as Horny sent the ball flying over the net toward your team with the first serve. Rusty was the first to hit it, and send it to the front line where Colesy smacked it down on the other side. There were a few more volleys back and forth before Geno served one over directly in front of (Y/N). She bump-set the ball up to the front line setting you up for a spike. It was a nice set from her, and everyone gave her a high five. However, it was a few serves later that she really impressed you.
Rusty returned the ball, but instead of heading toward the net; it went straight in the air. (Y/N) yelled that she had it and then proceeded to back set the ball to Dumo, who from the look on his face couldn’t believe how perfectly the ball was set up to him. You weren’t sure who was more stunned your team or the guys on the other side of the net. Instead of high fives this time, Kuny picked her up and twirled her around. You cursed that it was Chris and not you that got to hold her in his arms, though you knew he was only doing it in celebration.
When he finally set her back on the beach, you found yourself saying. “So were you just hiding this talent or what, eh?”
“I may have played a bit in high school, but it’s not like I’m a professional athlete like you guys.”
“We’re hockey players. We’re not good at every sport, especially ones that are played on a beach.” Rusty told her.
“Alright, now that your secret weapons out, let’s get back to the game,” Horny yelled over. The rest of the game (Y/N) played setter. Needless to say, you won, the first match. As you went to switch sides, she tossed her loose half-shirt off to the side, as you now had her working up a sweat. It wasn’t a big deal, because she had a bikini top underneath, but you had to say that your mouth got a little dry just drinking in the sight of her body and you wondered how many of the other guys were thinking the same thing. Suddenly, you wanted to grab her top and put it back on, or better yet, throw your shirt on her, then you would have her scent on two pieces of your clothing.
The game continued on, and you were thankful at times that you had good reflexes since you’d been staring a time or two at (Y/N) as she moved through the sand. The curves of her body called to you and longed to drag her off to some secluded place on this damn beach. The second match went even quicker than the first and you weren’t sure if that’s because (Y/N) was playing to her full potential or the fact that you were daydreaming about all the wicked things you wanted to do to her.
As soon as the match was over, she ran down the beach to check on lunch, while you all grabbed some water. It wasn’t five minutes later that she was gathering the team and taking them down to eat. There were several tables and benches set up on the hard ground, for you to all eat. She had all kinds of fresh fish, different kinds of pasta, and burgers as well. After the late lunch, no one was in the mood to continue volleyball, so everyone spent the rest of the time lounging on the beach.
You had decided to hit the water, and cool off a bit; though it didn’t really help, for as soon as you got out, you saw (Y/N) laying out reading a book. Grabbing a towel, you dried off a bit before plopping down on the sand beside her. “Whatcha reading?”
“Lies My Teacher Told Me, have you read it?”
“Can’t say I have. Is it any good?”
“Yes, it actually is. I can pass it on to you when I’m done.” You’d rather read it together with her, but apparently, she wasn’t offering that as an option.
“Yeah, that would be great. By the way, thanks for today, we all really needed it.”
She marked her page then closed the book and turned her attention towards you. “I hope it helps. Everyone seemed a little down after the last game.”
“Yeah, we kind of were, but this definitely helped blow off some steam.” It was truly something the team needed and so much better than staying in the hotel room and playing video games. “I think it’s really gonna help all of us tomorrow night. You’re really amazing; you know that?”
Her smile was as bright as the sun that shone above, and the cute shade of red she turned had nothing to do with the heat. “It was nothing, really.” You knew that it wasn’t and that she always downplayed anything that she did for the team. You wanted to tell her again how much she meant to both you and everyone here, but Coach Sullivan had other plans as he had you get ready to leave. (Y/N) stayed behind to make sure everything got cleaned up.
The following night, the whole team played better. You had an assist in the first and a goal in the second, but with five goals total the points were spread throughout the team. The win led you to a due or die game back home in Pittsburgh. It was Rusty who came in clutch in the second, scoring the first goal and putting the team on the board. It was short-lived as the lightning scored next, but Bryan was able to score another one about a minute later. The team was able to hold them off in the third and you walked away knowing you were going to The Stanley Cup Championships.
Here’s the link to the video for the beach/volleyball scene that was my inspo.

Wheeling’s Cindy Johnson a Hospitality Hall of Famer
Tumblr media
She sells smiles. And yes, that IS meant literally. She’s so darn good at her job, her clients can’t help BUT smile. Ear-to-ear smiles, in fact, and those grins are the by-products connected to renting space inside Wesbanco Arena or the Capitol Theatre. That’s her gig. That’s what Cindy Johnson does and has done since the 1980s. She makes people smile while booking weddings, conferences and meetings, private parties, comedy shows, rehearsal dinners, bar mitzvahs, wakes, retirement parties, and a number of other functions, and she’s absolutely loved every minute of the process. She’s battled bridezillas, fixed figures with fathers, and created dreams come true time and time again. The best part is that Johnson continues to create her craft STILL in downtown Wheeling today. Initially, her work was connected with motor coaches and Jamboree Tours, and then she spent 19 years working in sales and as the general manager of the historic McLure Hotel. She left there for a position with the tourism department with the State of West Virginia, but, after a few months of rest-stop work, the phone rang. The stage at the Capitol Theatre has welcomed many legends in the entertainment industry, and it has been a memory maker for local residents, too. “One day Denny Magruder called me and said, ‘I understand you’re not real happy with the position with the state and I wanted to let you know we have a position open here (at the arena and theatre),” Johnson recalled. “And I wasn’t happy in the position. I was at the welcome center near Dallas Pike and I was supposed to help them with their travel plans in West Virginia, but all I did was help people find the restrooms. “I interviewed for the jobs and was hired, and ever since, I’ve referred to as a ‘God Thing,’” she said. “I’ve been here since 2015, and it’s a perfect position for me. And now that Kelly (Tucker) has come in and is working with the staff here, it really feels I’m right where I belong for the end of my career.” But she’s far from finished and, in a world where cell phones and social media have greatly diminished face-to-face interaction, Johnson adores the hospitality business because, oddly, she loves people. “I’ve always found it enjoyable to bring things together for people so their events go the way they want them to,” she explained. “During the process, I figure out what they want and what makes them tick, and that allows me to know how to proceed with the different services we have available. It’s all about taking care of people by making things as special as possible. “So, yes, it’s about making them smile,” she confirmed. “I know when me and my family get together, I want things to work out the best way possible because that makes it more fun and exciting. If you’re dealing with issues during the entire event, no one – trust me – is having fun.” The facade of Wesbanco Arena was upgraded nearly 10 years ago and features a sizeable front lobby/atrium. Mom’s Little Helper Cindy’s mother was 42 years old when she found herself a widow with seven children. Johnson’s father passed away when she was only 15 years old, and she was the oldest. “And she needed help, so I stepped into that role,” she said. “And I've just always been that caretaker and caregiver, I guess. When the others needed help, I was there to help and make sure they were OK. I guess that’s continued in the hospitality industry here in Wheeling. “I was 33 years old with children and my husband, Gary, when I was first hired in hospitality in 1985, and I’ve gone from one position to the next because I was impressed with all the motor coaches that were coming into town. And I decided to go back to school in Pittsburgh, but when I asked about motor coaches, the instructor told me it was something they had never considered. I finished the course, brought what I learned back to Wheeling, and got into the tour bus industry. Many upgrades have been performed to Wesbanco Arena thanks to a capital improvement campaign initiated by former Mayor Andy McKenzie. “I was doing a lot of business with the McClure Hotel at the time because I was putting a lot of motor coaches there. But then all of the ownership changes started to take place and eventually I was made sales manager and then the general manager,” she explained. “Owners came and went and I stayed and made sure it was consistent until I couldn’t stay there anymore. I’m a much happier person now that I am working with this team. It truly is a joy to work here.” The products she sells aren’t too shabby and they only improve with each completed project. Since April 2009 when the Wheeling Convention and Visitors Bureau purchased the Capitol Theatre, the historic venue has been updated for safety and upgraded for fan experience. Wesbanco Arena also has been renovated with new seating, video technology, ice-making equipment, floor-level lounges, and a new lobby, an industrial kitchen, and front-door security. “I have always had a love for the theatre, and I’ve always been impressed with the operation of Wesbanco Arena. It always seemed to be very organized and well-run for such a large building,” Johnson said. “And now with the Nailers plus all of the additional entertainment that’s come in, downtown Wheeling seems like it has life again. “I know the roads are rough, but that’s really not stopping people as far as what I’ve seen, and when our two venues are busy that means the restaurants are busy, too. That’s the way all of this works and that’s why I love it so much,” she added. “But, in the end, I would not have been able to do any of it if it were not for the support I’ve received from my family, and especially from my husband. Gary has always been my rock and I have no idea what I would have done with him.” Read the full article
