Okay, now that the blog finally got unflagged, I can share this! Massive thanks to @benjimatorarts for accepting this commission– I'm delighted with how it turned out! It's nice to have a sort of "cover" for this AU, especially since it's been ruling my life for the past month.

For those who don't know, this AU is predicated on the theory that Niffty is actually a former overlord who Alastor somehow drove into insanity. The story is based around the question: "What if he did the same to Vox?" Developing this AU has been an ongoing collaborative effort between myself and several lovely frequent contributors, and I've really enjoyed what we've put together so far! We mostly focus on Vox's relationship with the Vees in the aftermath of the event and the psychological/emotional fallout thereof, as well as Alastor's reappearance seven years later, when he summons Vox to join him at the hotel. It's honestly been a ton of fun to work on and I think we've gotten some really good angst/black comedy out of it!

But yeah, enough pitching– thank you again to @benjimatorarts for the piece!

Do you guys think that Alastor can use his little radio powers to interfere with Vox’s TV signals and distort his perceptions of reality. That would be really fucked, wouldn’t it?

I’m going to obsess over this for a while. Regardless of whether it’s canon, it’s a cool concept and opens up so many possibilities for fics and angst.

my ideal Complicated And Sad song in s2 would be vox singing 'stay with me' to alastor in a flashback, possibly as his original pitch for alastor to join him, with a couple of 'stayed gone' references in there. i think that would be appropriately painful

What would we (I say we but mostly you) do if the show outright states Vox never had feelings for Alastor?

genuinely speaking though it'd be weird for it to be straight up deconfirmed I can't really think of a context for that to happen unless like someone wrongly assumes that of vox and he denies it and shows proof in his backstory? I mean even with that there'd probably be some way to twist it so it's still a believable hc, the only way I can see it TRULY deconfirmed is if staff was asked about it and they say it's not canon

but at most, if it's not canon, I see it as just never being confirmed and just remaining a popular headcanon people have. and you know I'm fine with that

like I've said before, the interesting aspect in general I find is that we KNOW at the very least vox had former respect/admiration for alastor that he wanted him to join his team which is no low offer for vox considering how he is with the vees currently, and that respect later turned into hatred, so that aspect alone is already interesting to me. one-sided romantic feelings on vox's side would just be the icing on the cake (and it's funny)

and also as I've kept repeating, I JUST WOULD LIKE AN EXPLANATION FOR THE BI FLAG CRASH if it's not canon in any way

like yes haha easter egg for the canon bi tv man but did the animators really not think through how it looks or what it implies in the context of stayed gone especially when it was right after "he asked me to join his team"?

I'm sorry, I saw your headcanon about if Alastors radio waves can alter Vox's perception, and that idea excites me to no end. What is your vision for that? What would Alastor make Vox see? How fucked up is Vox gonna be after?

Depends on how bad Vox pissed Alastor off, I think. If it’s back when they were friends, it was probably used to help Vox keep a cool head and stay calm. Maybe Alastor would play ocean ambience on his radio for Vox- or right in Voxs head using- to help him relax. They could use it to gossip during Overlord meetings (or in general) and Alastor would probably use it to hide little gifts or presents he got for Vox (if he’s that kind of person, I don’t really know).

After they split? Madness.

Alastor would use it to make Vox think someone was talking to him when no one is, or make him see things that aren’t really there. From eerie noises to the sounds of his friends voices to straight up screams and ear bleeding sounds, Alastor would do it all. I think one of his favorite things is to alter what Vox sees, make him paranoid or scared. It could be used for minor things, (like maybe he thought it was Tuesday but it’s actually Friday) or it could be used for some fucked I’m shit. If Alastor is in a particularly bad mood, I imagine it’d be torture for Vox. He’d play the voices of people Vox loves in his head on loop, whether it’s them begging, crying or screaming, and he’d play little memories and fragments in Voxs mind, effectively sticking him in a loop of pain. I think he’d even go as far as to give Vox intermittent breaks, but slightly distort his vision to make the world seem off, before continuing with the torture. Vox would never feel safe or truly at peace.

So yeah, 10/10 fucked up.

Could be used in other ways, too. This is just off the top of my head.

Mimzy was his friend when they were alive and Rosie was in Hell long before him; they had their own identities that he respected. Vox had just gotten himself out from under the thumb of an old overlord and was starting a new phase of his afterlife when he and Alastor met. Alastor was his patron and mentor, and he loved how Vox used to look up to him; it was a bit sycophantic, sure, but Alastor also thinks he's the best thing since hot jambalaya, so it was fine by him.

In Alastor's mind (and Vox's too, honestly), Vox would've been nothing without him, just some random sinner with a TV store and a shitty business deal with Mammon for 80% of his profits. Even his ascent to power as an overlord came "because" of Alastor. After the rejection, when they fought for the first time, it ended in a stalemate and all of Hell took notice that the fearsome Radio Demon wasn't able to kill this random screen-headed sinner– he must be someone to watch. The way Vox started jacking his style after they split just confirmed in Al's mind that he was still his, even if they were now enemies. So yes, why would he see any issue with rewriting Vox as he pleases? He was already so willing to change himself for/into Alastor before ("tell me what to change for you, and I will!!"), how is this any different?
