really cant decide if i hate noucome or elfen lied more actually they both so egregiously failed at their purpose & living up to their reputation/expectations but in different ways. noucome was intended to be a comedy based on the concept of the protagonist being subjected to random absurd vn choice prompts but like not even halfway through the writers seemed to just forget about this and it spiraled into the worst amalgamation of high school harem anime tropes and cliche and/or outright annoying characters where youd almost think its satirical but its pretty clear its not. but elfen lied has this pretense and reputation of being an extremely serious and dark and deep anime…but also just devolved into an awful harem with incest because i guess theybjust felt they had to include that. and with bloody scenes sprinkled throughout to keep the viewers attention like cocomelon for ranfren fans along with a psychological narrative as shallow as possible while still being able to fit the genre i guess. now that im writing this out i feel like elfen lied is worse because noucome was still meant to be a SoL comedy even if it followed through with its original premise, it obviously wasnt intended to be a masterpiece or anything while elfen lied was clearly intending to be something much more serious and groundbreaking than it actually is. and people are gullible enough that they will believe elfen lied is some sort of masterpiece. so i think elfen lied falling through so hard on its original intent makes it worse due to the scale & gravity of the subversion of expectations. Like.. it's trash but the core concept of being forced to play the world's most fucked up game of would-you-rather at the most inopportune times is still like.. pretty good
