Omg people seriously don't know how vinyl records work im on the floor crying wheezing rn.

#to me. i have always known. so it seems stupid that pwople dont bc #records are the same to me as cassette tapes and cds. they were just around. i know how they work and how to use them.#less the tapes but yk what i mean #'how do they put the music on there? they upload it after' no the fucking dont.#the press that flattens the vinyl has grooves and the needle on your record player turns the grooves into audioble music #each album has to have its own press. like you cant make a talyor swift record on a press that flattened hoziers last ablum #otherwise youd get unreal unearth in lavender instead of midnights yk? they work like stamps. except its music.

I have acquired. Tape recorder

#was this a wise use of money? probably not #but am i excited about it? yes #i have Ideas #anyway now I'm learning how to use a tape recorder #and i have like 10 90 minute blank tapes #tried to put it in like a cd at first which is Not how that works #mypost #the tapes. i think specifically the magnetic film in the tape?#has a distinctive smell that it didnt occur to me to expect.#it's not like. bad or anything i just wasnt expecting it #i only very vaguely remember tapes from childhood and i think they were outdated then #like early 2000s #but i had a weird moment when i first opened the package with the tape #where i vividly remembered an image of the back with the space for writing or something very like it #with no additional context. just recognized having seen it before

Five years of physics at university level and I still don’t understand electricity, electromagnetism and analog or digital sound recording or amplification

#I’m like okay so the human voice makes sound the usual way. Vibrations in the air. Get that. Get how it’s produced how it’s transmitted and #how it is heard by humans. Fine. Then you’re saying they speak into a microphone and those vibrations are converted into varying voltages #and that signal travels through a cable to a sound desk and then travels through another cable to the speakers #Where the voltage signal is converted back into a vibrating thing which is pushing the air and is making sound as we know it #And somehow after all that electricity we’ve now got a faithful reproduction of that human voice but louder now #And then you tell me. You do the first part. But then the signal is sent to a computer and is sampled at a very high rate and the voltages #are converted into 1s and 0s (which are actually also voltages but they’re just binary signals. Like a voltage of 0 or 5mv. That kind of th #And this highly sampled voltage signal which is now represented as 1s and 0s can be written onto a cd or played directly from a computer #And somehow we get that human voice back #I DONT UNDERSTAND IT #how is voltage a sound 😭#And then there’s also magnetic tapes and vinyl records. Which again I get but also it’s coming back to recreating those voltage signals.#Either by a needle moving up and down over spinning grooves #Or something with magnetic tape I don’t know how tapes are actually read #But electricity. I don’t get it.#And with all this I have to worry about electromagnetic fields and impedance and interference because they’re real electrical signals and #come with all the electromag physics of that!

HELL YEAH!!!! there’s also an added bonus to listening to those things in public which is immediately forming an unshakable bond with every person over the age of 40. i was listening to my discman (portable cd player) in class today and the substitute approached me and said “a walkman huh? totally old school.” and i just nodded but the mutual respect felt instantaneous

#[☁️] imaginary mind imaginary lines #i seriously can’t recommend it enough. like after listening to an entire 40+ minute long album with NO ads u feel like a changed person #the other day i made my very first tape (i recorded a local band’s cd onto a tape because i was gonna give the cd to my friend and the-#-album is so good!!!) and it’s so much cooler than just making a playlist #u get to HOLD it. in ur hands. it’s fucking crazy #don’t even get me started on the cd booklets…… im stopping my ramble here (i love physical media can u tell)#very happy i could convert u though!!! tip to always check out the thrift store for cds. i’ve gotten 96% of my collection from the thrift #and i’ve gotten both of my discmans and both of my walkmans from the thrift store too for like $6.99 each. praise be the thrift store fr

honestly with spotify wrapped coming out today I’m deeply concerned for my past self in freshman year of college cos I listened to the tron legacy soundtrack so much that daft punk is still one of my top listened artists on spotify. i havent listened to them in 2 years btw

#they arent bad artists by any means!! i like their music !!!!!!!!! im just like. mainly into other stuff now #but like. jesus fucking christ.#feeling like these things r a little rigged tho cos theres... def stuff on there ive listened to ad nauseum #and its only made the bottom rung of my list #last year and earlier this year i went on this huge 60s bluesrock binge #and it barely fucking made any of my lists #then again tho i usually listen to music in the car and shit when commuting #and i got a new phone which isnt compatible w my cars bluetooth #so i got rly into physical media like cds and records #lately tapes too. i raided my dads garage for his led zeppelin tapes and a few others #so that probably contributed to my shit wrapped thing #idk. shits still rigged tho #rambling

there’s an episode where johnny is wearing a red hot chili peppers shirt and I don’t remember which episode or anything else that happened in it off the top of my head because I was just staring at the shirt feeling confused and betrayed

as someone who is constantly paranoid and worried about their records being ruined i sure don’t take any steps to preserve them

#it’s just! the idea of putting them behind plastic and keeping the record out of the sleeve is just #i don’t know there’s something so robotic and artificial about that #they’re meant to be enjoyed to exist and live #and that’s why we created tapes Cds streaming to more efficiently store and protect #but i see people saying ‘oh you HAVE to do this to protect your records’ and it’s all so very devoid of anything #call me crazy but i think music and art should be enjoyed and not meticulously calculated and preserved #eris: text #anyway
