18+ MINORS AND THOSE WITHOUT AGE IN BIO DNI
tags: @illiana-mystery, @cryptic-michael
warnings: swearing, menstruation, talk of Nelson’s experiment
I curled up more on Nelson’s couch and flipped through the channels. A bowl of chips sat in front of me and I occasionally grabbed some. I looked at the clock and smiled softly. Nelson would be done with classes soon. A few minutes later the door to the apartment opened and Nelson walked through.
“honey I’m home.” He sighed as he saw me on the couch. Walking over, he dropped his books and coat on the side table before kissing my head. Reaching over he grabbed some chips before sitting down next to me. I curled into his side as he threw his arm over my shoulders. “How are you feeling?” He asked after a minute.
“Crampy. Sore. A little hungry.” I shrugged. “That’s what the chips are for. I had a big lunch but I’m still hungry. So snacks.” Nelson nodded.
“yeah well a major organ is trying to purge itself so…” Nelson muttered as he pulled the bowl closer. “Last time you took pain killers?”
“half an hour ago.” I said, used to his line of questioning.
“use the heating pad today?” I shook my head. He nodded, cataloging my responses in his head. “Hot shower or bath?”
“took an extra hot shower this morning. Not long after you left for class.” I said. Nelson squeezed my shoulder. “How was class?”
“boring as fuck. The whole time I kept thinking of coming back and cuddling with you.” He complained. “Rachel wanted to invite you out for drinks. I got you out of it though.” I nodded my thanks. “Probably a double date with Horatio.”
“there’s nothing wrong with a double date with them once in a while.” I said. Nelson groaned.
“I’m fine with him. It’s her that sends me down the damn rabbit hole.” His head fell against mine. “Ever since the experiment, she’s been an uptight bitch. More so than she was before. It’s like everyone forgot the lesson that fucking experiment ended up teaching us already.”
“I’m sure she has her reasons.” I said. Nelson shot me a look.
“I’m going to chalk that up to the hormones.” He said. I laughed as I ran my fingers through his hair. Nelson let his head fall against mine. “Just please get me out of anything that she tries to set up with the four of us.”
“I’ll do my best.” I promised.
“good.” He muttered. “Now let’s just get you feeling better. Anything I can do?” I shook my head.
“thanks Nelson but not really. Nothing that doesn’t involve a medical procedure neither one of us really want at the moment.” I said. Nelson snorted and I smiled at him. “But I won’t turn down some cuddling if you feel up to it.” He nodded, kissing my nose.
“yeah. I’m always feeling up to cuddles.” He said before pulling me tight against his chest.

The Adventures of David Dashiki- Stories of an African America Hero... 2024- Year of the Black Man Aaaahhh! But What To Read ?
Tumblr media
READING...
We have agreed that reading is our starting point. Then, here are some essential and brilliant authors that you must possess in your quiver as ammunition in the battle against illiteracy. Make no mistake, this is scholastic warfare. An ill-equipped reading warrior is only armed for his own demise. Secondly, on the battlefield, we must be able to fluently communicate. We must speak the same language. One cannot speak Swahili and the other, French. This type of preparation would only lead to disaster of major proportions.
Garvey is the primer. Other authors of significant fame and reputation that our young readers must master are: Arna Bontemps, Claude Brown, Ralph Ellison, Richard Wright, Alex Haley, Ta-Nehisi Coates, August Wilson, Malcolm X, Nelson Madela, W.E.B. DuBois, Calvin Baker, Junius Edwards, Yosef Ben-Jochannan, Harold Cruse, Maulana Karenga...
Female Authors: Alice Walker, Amanda Gorman, Toni Morrison, Chi Mammanda, Ngozi Adichie, Bell Hooks, Audre Lorde, Lorraine Hansberry, Terry McMillan, Ntozake Shange, Jesmyn Ward, Angela Davis, Ida B. Wells, Claudia Tate, Dorothy Koomson, Cheryl Clarke, Sioban Brooks, Elaine Brown, Ruby Bridges, Rosa Parks, Dorothy Porter...
Poetesses: Nikki Giovani, Maya Angelou, Phyllis Wheatley, Mari Evans...
Poets: Langston Hughes, Amiri Baraka, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Countee Cullen. Jean Toomer
We must read so that we can survive the myths. We live in a country in which myths about our character and industry have been propagated for centuries. History has not told our story with veracity and pride. We have been maligned. Therefore, we use the Year 2024 to read what WE have to say about US. If we do not read, we will succumb to the vicious lies spoken and written about us. Our children will never overcome in the current social environment. What is most important is that we read our story and focus on why is it important to omit the truth about what has happened and will continue to happen to us in America. This is a land of opportunity. It is our duty to reveal the truth. This can only be accomplished if we read, act, do, speak, question, create, develop, execute, move, pursue, respond, persevere, operate, persist, exert, represent, exploit,... Damn it! We must do something. The plan is that we read. Fill the knowledge gaps. Then act. The dormant days of life have ended. We are in the moment knowledge warriors.
Here are a few questions I advance: Why is it important that America omit our true history in our textbooks?
Why has America hidden the history, of our past, our successes and achievements from all who call themselves AMERICANS?
What has been taught are lies, propaganda and MYTHS.. America is a land of opportunity. We can right these wrongs. First , we must be armed with our own stories and triumphs. We must be READERS.

What about ❛ do you remember when we first met? ❜ with Nelly? 🥺
"Do you remember when we first met? In undergrad?"
Your words felt as useless as you did. The actual doctors rushed around you, actually working to save Nelson's life, and you felt absolutely pathetic clinging to him. Why were you here again?
You didn't have much in the way of scientific knowledge to offer, you weren't even a med student, but as Nelson's most recent... fling, fuck buddy, maybe-partner, whatever, you were the one he trusted to help them record it all for the history books.
And now he was turning blue right under your hands. And all you could do was talk at him with some vague notion of hope that he could hear you.
"I thought you were the biggest jerk I had ever met. So condescending and... and..." your voice started to break when David shook your shoulder.
"Keep going, his pulse is getting stronger!"
"I- I-" you scrambled for something to say, holding his arm so tightly you worried it would shatter. "I wanted to smack that smirk off your stupid face. I wanted you make you eat every word. And then you were just so dang charming, taking me on fancy dates, and-" a horrible crack shattered your voice and you started pounding on the cot with your fists. "And you made me love you, damn it! You made me want to take care of you and chase away the nightmares and get you a beagle puppy for Christmas, you asshole! And now you're trying to die without giving me a chance to tell you any of this!"
"We're gonna get him back!" Rachel snapped, intensifying her CPR. "We have to..."

You almost considered not going to the party. It wouldn’t have been the first time you skipped an event like this. You were much to interested in building your portfolio of work then socializing, especially when the new year was imminent and your graduation not long after. The long nights of mulling over your work, setting up dates for shoots, and writing papers revolving around your piece’s significance to the photographic world.
However, your friend had begged that you attend this little get-together, stating you had barely been out of the house for most of the semester, not even for any holiday celebrations. They promised it would just be a small group of final year students from the university your attending and some of their boyfriend’s fellow doctoral students from the nearby medical science college. After declining multiple times until they begged you to come because it wouldn’t be fun without you, something you sincerely thought was untrue, you accepted.
Now you were getting of the dinky old bus, and preparing to walk the two blocks to your friends apartment. You shuddered as a shiver ran up your spine from the cold December chill. Wrapping your jacket tighter around your body, you picked up the pace, avoiding the slush which had coagulated in the potholes and dips in the sidewalk. Chicago winter was killer, sometimes you couldn’t believe you’d survived it in the shitty apartment you had. The air conditioner barely worked and the heater had crapped out, and your landlord was to lazy to come and actually fix it.
Your musing eventually lead you to the brightly lit red-brick brick house which your friend rented out, with its shabby window frames and partially broken eavestrough. They probably couldn’t afford to get their shit fixed either, you chuckled to yourself under your breath as you made your way up the stone steps to knock on the front door.
Before you could even wrap your knuckles on the wood, the door swung open and a man with short brown hair in a black coat stumbled onto the front step nearly knocking you over. He noticed you last minute and was able to pivot out of the way.
“Heh, sorry I didn’t see you there.”
“It’s alright, you just surprised me that’s all.”
“Your Y/N right?” The man said giving you a sheepish grin, which was both very charming and attractive. He clearly quite practiced at giving these looks, as his clean-cut and handsome nature gave to you.
“I’m Joe, Joe Hurley,” he extended his hand to you, “Y/F’s boyfriend mentioned you were a close friend of theirs, both in the photography course.”
“Yeah, that’s me,” You responded, taking his hand in yours and shaking.
“Who’s letting in the draft?” Y/F appeared at the door sporting a very festive looking sweater. Once they saw you standing in the doorway, they pushed past Joe, embracing you in a hug.
“I am so glad you came! I almost thought you weren’t going to make it,” They said, leading you into the house.
“Glad to know you have so much confidence in me,” You replied, earning a playful punch to the shoulder.
“I’m gonna go pick up the extra wine you asked for, since we both know Ruth and Stanley are gonna drink everyone under the table,” Joe closed the door behind him as he left, shutting out the frost and the lightly falling snow that had just begun.
“They haven’t arrived yet, but the med students are here. They showed up pretty early. Guess that’s what you expect from people who get in deeper shit then we do for being late. It’s a pretty prestigious place.” Y/F leads you into the kitchen where you can see a pretty large whole chicken baking in the oven, and an assortment of pots and pans cooking on the stove. The counters are littered with a variety of spices and veggies in various stages of being chopped up. It’s a complete mess, but you know your friends always been prone to these episodes of controlled chaos, that’s how they created their best art. That meant the food was most likely going to be divine.
“Smells good in here.”
“Thanks, I try. We’ll just have to see if it smells as good as it tastes.”
Y/F starts in on cutting some broccoli into smaller more manageable chunks with a comically large knife.
"You should head into the living room, get to know the rest of the gang here tonight," Before you could protest that you'd prefer to help out in the kitchen then mingle with a bunch of strangers, Y/F pushes a large bottle of red wine into your hands.
"Can you also bring this into the living room for the others, thank you!" once again you couldn't even get a word in edgewise. Not unusual for Y/F, who was always the more forceful of the two of you.
As you exit the kitchen, bottle in hand, you call out "By the way that sweater is ridiculous, it's not even December yet."
Taking slow steps down the narrow hallway was your way of prolonging the inevitable awkward introductions you’d have to make to a room full of strangers. You stopped in front of a framed picture sitting slightly tilted on its hinge. The photo itself made you smile, an old picture of you, Y/F, their boyfriend, and two of your high school friends. You’d all decided to go backpacking through Europe as one last adventure before heading to university, college or trades school. The memories of that trip washed over you, reminding you of the ease you used to feel around complete strangers, something you had lost with the years of relentless work keeping you away from company. Now the very idea of leaving your dorm room or the familiar confines of the photo lab made you severely anxious. You had to but that behind you, because you had decided to come and there was no going back now.
Straightening the picture frame on it’s nail, you headed to the open double doors to the living-room, pouring its orange light and jovial conversation from inside, and prepared to be an open social member of the party, for however long that lasted.
As you took your first steps into the doorway, you set your eyes upon the scene before you. Two couches sitting opposite each other in the small but cozy room, a squad wooden coffee table which was one of Y/F’s scores from when you and them would go dumpster diving, a lit fireplace, antique bookcase lining one side of the walls, an occupied worse-for-ware easy chair, and a vintage lamp which Y/F had brought back from Budapest with them.
Even more intriguing than the familiar living-room setting was the unfamiliar group of people occupying it. Four strangers, all chatting over nearly empty glasses of wine about what you assumed from what you could hear, were the recent exams they had to taken. The first of the four to notice your appearance was the only other woman present. She had her hair tied back into a ponytail, keeping the brown curls away so you could see her face when she offered you a polite smile. As soon as the woman looked up the others also noticed you standing there quietly, you figured saying something might make it a little less awkward then standing around staring.
“Hey, I’m Y/N, Y/F’s friend, I brought some more wine,” you supplied, taking a few steps into the room and placing the bottle on the coffee table.
“Nice to meet you I’m Rachel, Randy would you move over and make room so she can sit down?” The man name Randy, moved from his seat in the center of the couch, over to one side to make room for you introducing himself as he did.
“Randy Steckle,” He held out his hand, and you shook it whilst placing yourself at a polite distance from him on the couch. Out of all the people here, he was the most smartly dressed in a tweed vest, matching trousers, and dress shirt. He made you feel very underdressed by comparison.
The man on the couch beside Rachel also took this time to introduce himself as David, who was thankfully dressed as casually as you were, making you feel like you were at least not the only one who decided a pair of work jeans and a t-shirt. If you’d known that this had been a more formal or well-dressed occasion you might have invested in something more fancy to wear, not that you owned anything fancy as a broke student. All your money had already gone to either rent, food, or back into university to cover tuition.
“Your Y/F’s friend from school right?” David added as he offered to pour the wine for everyone. An empty glass had already been supplied for you on the table, a mismatched one, but to be fair none of Y/F’s cutlery ever matched. It all came second-hand from thrift stores and antique junk stores.
“Yeah we’re in the same major, Photographic Arts & Media,” you supplied.
“Oh, that’s super cool. What’s work like in that field?”
“Lucrative depending on what kind of work you get into. You guys are all medical students right?”
“Yep, all working towards becoming surgeons,” David took a healthy sip from his glass.
“That must be pretty intense, can’t imagine rooting around in someone’s body, blood freaks me out,” you chuckled, earning a few chuckles from the others.
“I’d definitely say it’s an acquired practice,” Randy added before starting to go in more detail about the surgical specialization in more detail, with both David and Rachel adding to his little speech here and there with some little anecdotes here and there.
Sitting back and listening you could feel the passion they had for their practice despite its morbidity. A lot of the medical jargon did go over your head, and as Randy got into more detail about the exams and scheduled classes they had, the more the whole group fell into what seemed like their typical ingroup banter. It was nice to sit back and watch in pleasant silence as a group of clearly close friends chatting, laughing, and telling each other inside jokes. It reminded you of all the times you’d missed out on with Y/F and your other friends. All the nights where they'd invited you to clubs and on bar crawls that you'd traded out for long nights pouring over art history texts and working in the photo lab under its harsh red light.
However, one person in this group had been completely silent, to the point where you hadn't really registered his gaze. He was leaning far back in the easy chair, dress shirt with it's top two buttons undone, one of his feet in expensive shoes crossed over his knee.
You caught his eyes and held his gaze for a moment. Bright blue eyes, filled with a slight spark to them, whether it was curiousity or something else you weren't sure. His hair short and dirty blonde in colour, clearly he'd gotten it done professionally. He gave you a slight smile and you looked away blushing, you'd been staring for to long.
He picked up his wine glass and brought it to his lips, taking a sip before starting to say something. He was interrupted by Y/F shouting from the kitchen.
"I need an extra set of hands in here to help with this bird!"
You automatically stood preparing to get yourself out of this awkward situation, before Rachel reached out and stopped you.
"You just got here, I’ll go,” she said, coaxing you back into sitting.
“You sure? You just got your glass refilled.”
“I’ll take it with me, don’t worry about it, just relax,” Rachel, got to her feet, taking her wine with her and exited the room calling to Y/F that she was coming to help.
“I think that’s my cue for a bathroom break,” You scooched out of the way, half standing up in order to make space for Randy to get past you.
“Jeez, this is the fourth time you’ve gotten up, you have the bladder the size of a peanut,” David added as he poured himself another glass of red.
Then it was just you, David and the blonde man. There was a long pause where everyone sat in awkward silence, David drinking his wine, you making yourself familiar with thread patterns of the living-room rug. Navy green was such an ugly colour for a carpet.
“So, whats art school like?” David asked, breaking the silence.
You look up and once again you can feel the very intense gaze of the silent blonde man in the easy chair. Deciding against making anymore intense eye contact, you instead settle for looking at the peeling plaster slightly up and to the right of where David is sitting.
"It's stressful, not nearly as stressful as having to perform all your exams on cadavers kind of stressful, but it keeps me busy."
"You mentioned majoring in photo correct?"
"Photographic Arts & Media is the official title, but yes. We mostly have a mixture of hands on photo assignments, art history and a focus on working with new media," You could feel yourself starting to relax as the conversation remained focused on something you could understand and talk about, and David's polite attention was making you feel welcome on some level.
"Hands on, like what kind of projects?" It was the first words you'd heard from the man sitting in the easy chair, and you were taken aback by the smooth and pleasant sound of his voice.
"W-well, I, we," you take a moment to clear your throat and your head before continuing. "We usually have a couple assignments which revolve around various things, what they are is usually quite open when it comes to guidelines. Usually we'll pitch an idea for a project to our professor and if we're given the greenlight, we have to construct a narrative through our images and their subjects."
"Sounds a lot more open ended then anything we do," The man said leaning forward, hands on his knees giving you his full attention.
"I mean it's not surgery, but it can be pretty intense. Especially when it comes to the critiquing period, we all sit outside the photo lab and have to present our either currently in works projects or finalized projects and then we get torn a new asshole by both our profs and the class."
“Doesn’t sound that different from the reaming we get during the rounds we have to do in the surgical ward. Except you have an audience of your whole class and not just those in the same practice. I know that Y/F does things that involve a merging of collage and paint with photo. What do you do? What’s your artistic thing?”
“My artistic thing?” You laughed at his phrasing, and received in return a small smile.
“Eloquently put,” The man chuckled from behind his glass. He had nearly emptied it in the last minute you’d been having your little conversation. David just gave him a look, before shrugging and fishing around in one of the pockets in his sweater, fishing out a box of cigarettes, and a lighter.
“My 'thing' I guess, if you could call it that, is capturing real life stories of working class people. I like using old cameras, running on old film, sometimes even 16mm," You were about to continue when David flicked the lighter, sending up a small spark that died out quickly, reminding you of Todd (Y/F's boyfriend's) rigid rules about smoking in the house.
"I'm sorry you can't smoke in here, Todd's a real stickler about it. He says the smell really gets into the carpet," David examined the cigarette before thinking better of it and placing it back in the pack.
"You can smoke it outside on the front step," You added.
"I might have to do that. I've been dying to get a smoke in all day. Been to busy working. I don't want to interrupt you explanation though."
"It's no problem really, you can go smoke and I'll catch you up on everything when you come back."
"Okay, I'll be back in ten," David smiled sheepishly, looking slightly guilty about needing to take a smoke break from the conversation. He got up and waved to the man sitting in the chair before quickly walking out of the room.
It became very clear to you now that it was just you and this man who had yet to really introduce himself. For a moment there was just silence with a hint of some kind of tension in the room. You couldn't tell what this energy was, just that it made your palms sweat and you skin heat up.
The light of the fireplace gave off a warm glow that overpowered the lamp, bathing you both in a soft orange hue. It made the sharp edges of everything soft, including the man's intense stare, the quirk of his pink bow-shaped lips, the comforting sky blue of his eyes, what it would be like to brush your hands against the cleanly shaved skin on his cheeks.
God don't think about his lips! You don't even know this guy. He's attractive, sure, but you don't know who he is, what he is, or even his name. You can't possibly be thinking these thoughts right now about some strang-
"I'm Nelson by the way," the man, now with a name you could attach to his person.
"I feel rude not introducing myself properly earlier, there was just a lot of stuff going on. Although with that lot," he gestures to the doorway where everyone had exited at some point that night "it's hard to get a word in edgewise."
"It's alright, it's not like I really introduced myself to you either, I'm Y/N," you extend your hand to Nelson across the coffee table and he leans forward to take it. His hands are much softer than you expected them to be, your fingers brush over a scar on the back of one of his knuckles, the only blemish on his skin.
“Y/N, I like the sound of that name, feels like the name of someone who works in something cool like photography.”
“I mean, if you say so. I always thought it was kinda just a generic name, or at least not very artsy. Nelson sounds pretty sciencey though,” you added.
“More like the name of annoying snobby rich kid with to much time on his hands,” he chuckled before picking up his glass from the table, still leaning forward into the conversation the two of you were having.
“I wouldn’t be that cruel,” you said in response.
“I would. Have never really been a huge fan of the name Nelson, but it’s what I’m saddled with, so I make do. The work you mentioned doing, in photography. It sounds really interesting. I’ve never really heard anything like it before.”
You felt suddenly very self-conscious. The way he'd expressed such interest was not something you were used to. Constantly being surrounded in your academic life by other artists working on equally complex and sometimes even more nuanced ideas then you, made the fact that Nelson was so taken by your ideas quite charming.
"I mean it's nothing that special by comparison to what Y/F does visually with eye-capturing colours, but it feels real and visceral to get what's real on camera. I want people to really see the struggle and triumphs of everyday people. I don't want to sugar coat what happens or over-dramatize it. Everyone should see the reality of what the world is like for most working class people."
______________________________________________________________
The animated nature of them as they explained in a clearly passionate manner their inspiration for working in the photography program warmed something deep within Nelson. It reminded him of how he felt when he first entered the surgical field of study. He wished he'd still kept that passion alive like Y/N. It felt like over the years of study, he found the competition more important than the actual thrill of the learning.
The way her face lit up, and the glint in their eyes, made his heart flutter in a way that he hadn't felt since he met Rachel in the first year of their studies. He'd been taken by her passion too.
"Where is everybody?" Nelson and Y/N were startled from their conversation by Joe standing in the living-room doorway.
"I saw David smoking outside, but everyone else?"
"Rachel is helping Y/F in the kitchen, and Randy is taking an obnoxious amount of time in the washroom," Nelson didn't intend for his voice to come out as rankled as it sounded, but he really wanted to have this moment with Y/N to himself. Something about them made him feel oddly intrigued by and greedy for their attention.
"Has he been bragging about his GPA again?" Joe asked with a playful smirk on his face that made Nelson want to smack him upside the head. "He does that a lot. No seriously, I'm not kidding. A loooo-"
"She gets the point, and the answer is no," Nelson sniped back, now being purposefully rather short, but keep at least some edge of playfulness in his demeanor to cover his aggravation.
"And you'd probably also have a higher GPA if your spent more time studying and actually attending lectures than spending quality time with Susan from engineering, or was it Catherine from accounting? I can't seem to remember."
Joe mocked as if Nelson had shot him through the chest with that jab before saying; "Ouch, you really went in on that one."
Nelson was momentarily distracted along with Joe by the soft pleasant laughter from Y/N, who looked bemusedly at both of them.
"Aren't you two supposed to be friends or something?"
"Jury's out on that one," The voice of Randy called out from the hall before appearing next to Joe.
"Just so you know, we were having a really nice conversation about Y/N's future career in photography before you interrupted."
"Photography, cool. Like what kind of photography? Tasteful nude modelling?" It was said playfully, but had an edge of Joe's usual perverse humor and attitude behind it.
"Are naked women all you think about?" Randy asked, with a mixture of purturbedness and exasperation.
"Naked people, I don't discriminate."
"Jesus christ."
Before Joe could answer with a quip or witty retort the sound of Y/F yelling from the kitchen cut through the somewhat awkward and embarrassing conversation. It made Nelson feel slightly self-conscious in a way that he hadn't in a long time. His pride, ego, and ambition usually made sure he kept his cool, but not with Y/N. For some reason this person, who he'd just met, had snagged on something deep and insecure within in him.
"Dinner will be ready soon! Y/N! Please come to the kitchen, I just need a hand with table settings. Also Stanley and Ruth can't make it unfortunately,"
"So much for the wine, guess we'll have to drink it all ourselves," Joe shrugged as he said this, Y/N quickly getting up and excusing herself from the room. Nelson felt almost like getting up and following her, but remained seated. It would be creepy to just follow them around like some kind of lost puppy asking questions and needling them about her life.
"So, she's cute," Joe said leaning back into the hallway to watch her leave before fixing Nelson with a cheeky grin and wiggling his eyebrows.
"Joe," Nelson said levelly.
"Yeah."
"Please stop talking."
______________________________________________________________
The smell was mouthwatering. Y/F had really outdone themselves with the spread they'd made. Everyone had greedily gobbled down the chunky and perfectly seasoned potatoes, glistening juice chicken, the assortments of green beans, brussel sprouts and all manner of vegetables which there were clearly to much of, along with Y/F's legendary stuffing. No one was exactly sure what the full recipe was for it, just that it tasted like heaven in the form of nutty, ginger, fluffy goodness.
The conversation was just as good. Everyone laughing and carrying on. You'd fallen into the conversation quite comfortably and thought at this point that maybe going out tonight was not the worst decision you could have made after all. The good food and even better company definitely helped. Several times throughout the dinner you caught the eyes of Nelson on you, and he'd shoot you a smile that made you'd return, feeling a warmth grow in your chest.
After what seemed like endless hours of eating, talking and drinking, the plates were empty and everyone was quite full.
Y/F rose from her seat and began clearing the table methodically.
"I can help you with those," You said taking the plates from Y/F's hands and continuing around the table clearing the dishes.
"Thank you! I might also need a hand in the kitchen from you and someone else, I hate asking but.."
"I'll help," Nelson raised his hand, getting up from his seat smoothly as not to seem like he was rushing to help.
Y/F ushered him into the kitchen to start on washing the pots and pans while you worked on clearing the table, and they prepared desert.
Once you'd precariously balanced all the dishes on your arms, you slowly made your way to the kitchen entryway. A part of you was strangely excited to have this new person to yourself. Nelson had only really gotten to speak to you alone briefly, but those few minutes were still circling around in your mind, replaying all evening.
As you entered the kitchen Y/F rushed to help you unload the some of the dishes from your arms while thanking you and Nelson profusely for helping with the undertaking.
Set up in the kitchen, you set to helping with the drying and placing of plates back into their designated drawers. Both of you fell into a gentle rhythm of cleaning for a couple minutes, silently working side by side. This close to him, you could smell the slight scent of whatever shampoo he used and a very faint undertone of antiseptic. He must have been working rounds before coming here. It made you wonder why he would want to help with dishes while probably having already have to be on his feet for hours during work.
"You look a little tired, you sure you don't want me to just do the rest on my own?" You suggested lightly.
"No, no it's fine. I don't mind doing dishes, it gives me something mundane to focus on for a while." Nelson handed you a plate at an awkward angle as he said this, causing you to accidentally place your hand over his while taking hold of the dish.
"Sorry, Sorry, my bad," just the touch of his hand sent a spark of something exciting through you. It was such as unexpected jolt of raw attraction that you tried to not drop the dish in your hands, making you smooth recovery look as natural as possible.
"You alright there?" he chuckled in response to your fumbling, something smug about the look on his face.
"Just fine, fine."
"We never did get to finish our conversation from earlier."
"The one where I was nerding out about my personal photographic art style or whatever? I was honestly just rambling." Nelson turns to look at you fully for a moment, his eye contact intense, capturing you off-guard and lighting a small fire inside you.
"I thought what you were talking about sounded really interesting, and something I would love to see when you have your own showing in a gallery one day," you look down to break the intense eye contact, hoping that your blushing would be less obvious.
"Hah, it's definitely a dream of mine to have a showing in a gallery, but I'm a long way from that."
"Not too long I'm guessing."
"That's very kind to say. The only thing close to a gallery that I'll be doing is a section in a gallery-style presentation we're putting on at the university to showcase our thesis projects once they've been completed." Together you had nearly made it to the bottom of the pile of dishes together.
"If your really interested it will be hosted in April. I'd love to see you there," Nelson looked over to you again, having passed the last dish, removing the dish gloves and leaning against the counter.
"I'd love to see that, you should give me more of the details over coffee sometime, where we can talk in a less chaotic setting." Now you absolutely knew for sure he was flirting. Though it hadn't been exactly subtle before, with his intense interested and eye contact.
So why not?
"I'd like that. I'd like that a lot."
The smile on his face was priceless, something between a smirk and a bashful smile. There had been a lot of little looks exchanged by the two of you throughout the night, and you hoped there would be even more to share in the future. Over coffee or maybe lunch.
As Y/F called you both back into the dining room, all you could think was how you were so glad you'd decided to come to dinner that night. It had been one of the best choices you could have made, and you had a feeling you wouldn't regret it.

You woke up to the faint noises of the beeping from a monitor. Keeping your eyes closed, you felt a strange sensation throughout your whole body. Your mouth was dry; it felt like your limbs had been torn from your body and reattached to the opposite ends. Everything felt… off.
You ran your tongue over your teeth and frowned. You couldn’t remember the guards kicking you in the face and hitting your teeth, so why did they feel so different? Why would they need to replace your own teeth with dentures if you didn’t get your face smashed in?
“Bruce, he’s—I mean—she’s waking up,” you heard a voice say. The voice, which you immediately recognized as Steve’s, sent a shiver down your spine. What the hell was he on about? Slowly your vision focused; the contrast between the darkness and the then dimmed lights making it difficult. Once you were accustomed to the light, you noticed Steve and Bruce watching you from across the room, their mouths forming strained horizontal lines and dark circles hugging the sockets of their eyes. Why the fuck were they looking at you like—oh.
As the memories flooded back, you quickly shut your eyes again. Images of the machine, General Wright, and Doctor Nelson flashing before your eyes. Your mission, your cover being blown, them torturing you for days on end, and Bucky—Bucky. They had captured him. He’d been lying next to you in that room. Screaming. You felt your heart rate spike, and if you would have been able to focus on your surroundings, you would’ve been able to hear Steve’s concerned voice calling out your name.
You couldn’t remember what had happened after they had turned on the machine. Bucky’s screams had gone silent, and you had blacked out. Where was Bucky if not with Steve and Bruce? Was he safe? Were they able to rescue him as well, or had Hydra managed to take him captive again? You would never be able to forgive yourself if, by your failings as an agent, Hydra had been able to capture Bucky again. Your head was spinning, and you felt like throwing up.
“Y/N? I need you to calm down,” Steve said softly, his voice close by, and you felt him gently place his hand on your right shoulder. Carefully you opened your eyes again and became aware of Steve leaning down beside the hospital bed, his soft gaze focused on yours. Bruce leaned against the stark white wall next to the closed door, his arms holding a paper file crossed over his chest.
“Steve?” you heard the voice coming from your mouth whisper, but it didn’t sound like you. It sounded deeper and a little croaky. You licked your chapped lips and tried again. “What’s happening?” you heard the voice again. A sudden shot of panic and adrenaline filled your body, and your right hand flew towards your face as Steve’s hand slipped off of your shoulder. The first thing you noticed was that your hand smacked against your nose. Had it always been in that spot? Your fingers traced over the sides of your cheeks, and you felt a slight stubble. Next, you carefully poked your forehead, and you noticed strands of greasy medium-length hair framing your face. There was no way—this couldn’t be happening.
Your eyes flew open, and you looked to your left side, a silver metal arm with the signature red star stiffly laying next to your torso.
“Y/N,” Steve finally decided to talk again as he stood up from his position.
“What the fuck happened, Steve,” your voice broke, and your vision became blurry with tears. Steve didn’t answer and instead looked up at Bruce, who had been quiet all this time. He was busy fidgeting with a pen between his fingers, clearly uncomfortable with the situation at hand.
“We don’t have all the answers,” Bruce began, nervously clicking his pen, “all we know is that somehow they managed to—it seems like you and Bucky’s mind has been switched.” “Meaning,” Bruce continued, “that you, or at least your consciousness as we know it, is currently residing in Bucky’s body and Bucky is currently residing in—”
“Mine,” you interrupted. Your brain was working overtime. How did a machine that had not been cleared to safely transfer memories from one brain to another suddenly manage to not only transfer memories but your entire consciousness to another body? Above all that, it had switched consciousness between two bodies.
“He’s awake as well, I assume,” your eyes moved to look at a random spot on the wall. Bruce nodded his head. “You have both been unconscious for three days. Barnes woke up this morning and has been given a small dose of alprazolam to calm down.” You weren’t surprised by that last fact. You somewhat understood the mechanics of the machine. Since you’d worked on it with the other scientists, you knew what it supposedly should have been capable of. You knew what those scientists were capable of. However, the others hadn’t been in the loop as much as you were. You’d only been able to safely communicate a few times per month, having to keep the messages short and abstract. That’s why it had taken them a while to realize the mission had been compromised.
“Doctor Nelson,” you whispered, remembering the conversation between General Wright and Doctor Brown, “he made changes to the machine while I had been taken prisoner.” Steve looked down at you with an empathetic look.
“We realize this must be a terrifying and difficult situation for both of you. I promise I—we will try to find a solution as soon as possible,” Bruce tried to comfort you. He stopped clicking his pen and focused his eyes on the tiles in front of his feet.
“When we found you guys, the machine had been removed from the premises, and all higher-up personnel was gone. I’m afraid we’ll have to first find out where—” the soft noise of Steve’s voice drowned out as you tried to focus on your breathing. As the gravity of the situation finally dawned on you, you felt tension starting to form in your left shoulder and a headache fast approaching.
“Can I just get out of here?” you asked quietly, a few tears finally making their way down your cheeks. Steve immediately stopped talking and looked at you, a pained expression covering his face. He turned to Bruce, and the doctor nodded. “Helen will want to do a health check, but I can ask her to do it tomorrow instead. She won’t mind. FRIDAY can keep track of your vitals.”
“I left you a few clothes on the chair if you want,” Steve gestured towards them. You gave him a small smile and waited for them to give you some privacy. Before leaving the room, Steve turned his head and looked at you. “We are here for you if you need us, okay?” he softly closed the door behind him. You sighed and slowly sat up, tiredly placing your legs over the edge of the hospital bed, your mind going through all the facts.
Doctor Nelson had somehow managed to tweak the machine to switch consciousness between two bodies, which happened to be you and Bucky, had taken the device and disappeared to God knows where. Now you were stuck in the body of the person who you were convinced hated your guts.
You had met Bucky on your first mission away with the Avengers. You and Bucky had been tasked to keep watch on the entrance of a base when some agents snuck up on you and attacked you both. You had tried and succeeded in fighting off some of the agents while Bucky had fought off the rest. You had only been mildly injured, sustaining a broken femur and a few stab wounds in the process. Bucky had reacted by lashing out at you and had ignored you for the rest of the helicopter ride home, which had left you confused and hurt. While recovering from the fracture, you had kept the conversations between you and Bucky to a minimum. Only speaking to him when needed to. When you had been cleared to go back into the field, you had sensed Bucky further distancing himself from you. Thinking that the man couldn’t stand you, you had started acting the part. You had started snapping at him when he asked questions and felt yourself getting irritated at him simply for the way he acted. At the end of the year that you had known each other, you were practically jumping down each other’s throats when one so much as dared to say something about the other.
You stood up from your sitting position and tried to ignore the strange sensation between your legs as you walked towards the chair. You quickly grabbed the pile of clothes that Steve had left you and pulled them on, making sure you kept your eyes focussed on a blank spot on the wall. You sighed in relief as you realized that you were already wearing underwear. As much as you disliked the man, you knew how important privacy was for Bucky, and you wouldn’t want to see anything by accident without his consent. Once you were finished, you opened the door to the hallway and nodded your head at Cho as you passed her while walking to the elevator. You pressed the button to your floor and made a b-line to your apartment within the compound.
When you opened your door, you were greeted by a woman lying on your bed. By you lying on your bed.

warnings: injuries, blood, self inflicted injuries, swearing
“what the hell happened to you?” Rachel asked as she sat on the table. I frowned at Nelson as he glanced at her then at me.
“I was playing hockey.” He said vaguely. He finished prepping the needles and glanced around the room. “Where’s Dave?” Joe and steckle shrugged. I walked over to him and grabbed his chin.
“Nelson. You weren’t playing hockey. What happened?” I asked him as Joe talked to Rachel about the potential whereabouts of Dave. He went to turn his head but I held his head in place. “Those aren’t hockey injuries Nel. Come on.” Nelson swallowed and we turned as Rachel laid back.
“I’m ready.” She said, voice wavering slightly. “Dave or no Dave.” I let my hand fall and we went into it. When she came back after five minutes, I helped her into the bathroom and gave her the space she needed. “I’m fine really.” She said before closing the door on me.
“why don’t you ask doctor death?” Dave said as everyone gathered around Nelson. He rolled his eyes and started to walk away. I grabbed his arm.
“what’s going on Nelson?” I asked. Looking between everyone, Nelson sighed.
“we’ve been getting visits from those we’ve wronged in the past. Mines name billy Mahoney. And he’s a rambunctious little shit.” Nelson scoffed.
“wait a minute. You’re telling me a ghost is doing this?” I asked, grabbing his head and turning it to look at his wounds. Dave stepped closer and looked at the wounds too. “Nelson…” he pulled away from me and crossed his arms.
“it’s no big deal.” He tried to brush it off. “Look I’m fine. Joes fine. Rachel will be fine. Your problems are your own Dave.” Nelson walked away and I followed him. When we got back to his apartment, I sat Nelson down and cleaned up his wounds.
“next time don’t do this yourself.” I said softly. “You might accidentally infect yourself.” Nelson nodded as I redid his stitches. “Want to tell me what’s really going on Nelson?”
“billy Mahoney is this kid I picked on. It’s the one regret I have.” He said, staring at his hands. “I shouldn’t have done it but I mean…” he waved a hand around. “We had money. Have money. Billy was poor. It…wasn’t right. Didn’t make it right. But it happened.” I finished up and set down the needle. Nelson looked up at me, eyes hollow.
“Nelson…”I sighed. I hugged him and he seemed to be clinging to me as I rested my head on top of his. “We’re going to put an end to this. Somehow.” Nelson shook his head and I tightened my grip on him. We went to bed soon after and I didn’t hear him get up. When I did wake up, I found the note he’d left. The phone rang and I answered it. “Hello?”
“something is wrong with Nelson. You need to come down here.” Dave said. “Joe and steckle are with him and we’re at Rachel’s apartment. You need to hurry. We can’t keep him here forever.”
“on my way.” I said, hanging up. I grabbed my coat and ran out the door. Within ten minutes I was at the apartment and waiting to get buzzed in. Flying up the stairs, Dave had already had the door open and I ran in. Nelson was sitting tied to the bed frame. “Why…” I turned to look at Dave.
“he took an ice pick to his ear. Was aiming for his face.” I spun around to look at Nelson in shock.
“billy mahoney.” Nelson mumbled. Dave put his hand on my arm and drew me into Rachel’s kitchen.
“he did it himself. There was no one there.” Dave whispered. “He’s going to kill himself if we don’t stop this soon.” I nodded and looked over at Nelson.
“but how?” I asked. “He genuinely believes that a ghost is doing this.” Dave nodded.
“atonement.” He said. “I went and atone for what I did. My visions ended. If Nelson can atone for whatever he did to billy Mahoney…”
“the visions and self mutilation will end.” I finished. “Ok. Let’s do it. I’ll take Nelson to see billy.” Nelson looked at me and raised an eyebrow. “We might need your car.” Dave handed me the keys and patted my hand. Heading over to nelson, I grabbed his arm and pulled him back out. “Alright Nelson. Where’s billy Mahoney?” Nelson rubbed his neck and winced.
“it’s uh…” Nelson sighed and looked anywhere but me. “It’s easier to show you.” We got into Dave’s car and Nelson gave me the directions.
“where are we headed Nelson?” I asked as the town got darker and darker. “What’s going on?”
“we’re going to see billy Mahoney.” Nelson muttered. “Stop here.” I pulled over and got out with Nelson.
“that’s…that’s a cemetery.” I said with a frown. Nelson nodded.
“yeah.” He whispered. “That’s where billy Mahoney is. I killed him.” I looked over at Nelson as we started walking through. “It was an accident. He fell. I was taken from my family at nine and put in a reform school.” Nelson leaned down in front of a headstone and sneered. “I thought I paid my dues.” Pulling Nelson back, I wrapped an arm around his.
“we’ll figure it out.” I promised. “Somehow. We’ll figure it out.”

Short story # 7
481 - Words
Fandom - Flatliners (1990)
Pairing - Dr. Nelson Wright X Reader
Summary - Short story based on the post above, which reads. ↓↓↓ (In case the picture isn't loading for anyone.) ↓↓↓
--------------------
*pulls curtain back while wife is in the shower*
Me : Are we - stop screaming, it's just me - are we out of Cheetos?
--------------------
Warnings - Vague mention of nudity (for obvious reasons).
Notes - This was silly but I liked the idea of trying something out like this. Let me know what you think? Maybe I'll write some more short stories like this!
Oh that tweet is NOT mine by the way.
----
Rummaging through the third cupboard Nelson sighed to himself, determined to find his guilty pleasure snack, in all it's cheesy goodness. "Come on where are they." Nelson muttered as he opened the fourth cupboard, the only other cupboard with food stored within. "(Y/n)." Nelson called out, momentarily forgetting his girlfriend was in the shower. When she didn't respond Nelson shut the cupboard, spinning on his heel to go and find her. "(Y/n)?" Nelson frowned softly, the confused expression washing away the moment he caught the sound of the shower. "Oh right." Nelson snickered to himself, feeling silly for forgetting such a thing. When he opened the door Nelson smirked softly to himself, (Y/n)'s silhouette momentarily distracting him. The steam of the room fogged his glasses within moments, so Nelson pushed his glasses to sit upon his head, approaching the shower. Without warning Nelson flung open the shower curtain, the sudden appearance making (Y/n) scream in a panic. Her eyes closed to prevent soap from burning them. "Are we - stop screaming, it's just me - are we out of cheetos?" Nelson asked, (Y/n)'s scream cutting off the moment she heard her boyfriends voice. Quickly she ducked her head under the water, washing the soap away from her eyes.
"Nelson!" (Y/n) hissed after she opened her eyes, glaring him down with her hands on her hips. "Yes?" Nelson smirked, eyeing her playfully. "What was so important, you had to scare the holy hell out of me?" (Y/n) huffed, ignoring the lustful look in her lovers eyes. "Do we have anymore cheetos?" Nelson asked innocently, a soft smile on his face. "SERIOUSLY!" (Y/n) scoffed with a roll of her eyes. "Yes Nelson we have some more, there out in the car. I didn't bring all the groceries in earlier." (Y/n) sassed, resisting the urge to smile. "You're so difficult sometimes." She added finally smiling at him, while he pouted like a child. "You love me though, right?" Nelson asked with puppy eyes, resting his hands upon her wet hips. "Of course I love you Nelson, hence why I'm not strangling you right now for scaring me." (Y/n) joked making Nelson snicker. "I love you too." Nelson cooed softly before leaning forward and kissing her. "NELSON!" (Y/n) gasped the second he wrapped his arms around her body, and hoisted her out of the shower. "What?" He smirked as he held her body against his, the excess water from her body soaking his clothes. "You're making a mess." (Y/n) sighed with a grin, wrapping her arms a little tighter around his neck as he carried her to their bedroom. "I don't care." Nelson mused before kissing her lovingly, the pair of them giggling into the kiss when he fell back to lay on the bed, forgetting about the cheetos all together.

warnings: smut, unprotected sex (wrap it before you tap it kids), teacher/student relationship
I stared at the paper in front of me, the big red ‘F’ staring back at me. I looked up at professor wright and blinked in shock. He raised an eyebrow at me as he walked by.
“problem mx. (Y/L/N)?” He asked. I opened my mouth and paused. I nodded and he looked over my shoulder at my paper. “Right. If you’d like to discuss it, meet me in my office.” I nodded again and quickly stuffed the paper into my bag. I not so patiently waited for class to end.
“Professor wright?” I knocked on his office door. Professor wright smiled at me as I entered to room. “Sir…about the last paper…” he nodded and gestured for me to sit in front of his desk as he closed the door behind me.
“yes. Not your best work.” He said. I frowned and dug the paper back out of my bag. I smoothed it out on his desk and looked at him.
“I spent weeks researching this. I had three peers proofread this not to mention the writing center.” I exclaimed. Throwing my hands up, I started pacing the office. “I included everything you asked me to and I even asked professor steckle for help!” I sat down on professor wrights couch and buried my hands in my hair.
“there’s still time to redo it.” Professor wright said as he read over my paper again.
“redo it?!” I cried, looking up at him. “Redo it?!” Professor wright looked up at me and nodded. “Oh no. No. No no no no.” I shook my head, feeling like I was at my breaking point. “There has to be another way. Any other way. I’ll do anything. But I won’t rewrite that paper.” Professor wright raised an eyebrow at me and sat down in his chair. Taking off his glasses, he watched me.
“anything?” He asked. “Any other way?” I nodded. “I may have an idea.” Standing up, I leaned on his desk.
“whatever it is I’ll do it.” I said confidently. Professor wright smirked at me.
“you may want to know what it is I’m asking you to do before you agree to it so readily.” He warned. I shook my head.
“whatever it is, I’ll do it.” I assured him. I watched as he put his glasses back on. Professor wright nodded and stood up, moving to lock his office door.
“I really only see one of two ways to do this and it be comfortable. Would you prefer to be bent over the desk or laid out on the couch?” I looked between him and the desk.
“what?” I asked. Professor Nelson chuckled.
“you said anything.” He said as he walked past me to put his jacket on the chair and started unbuttoning his shirt. “I’m just asking for a quickie.” As more of his chest was uncovered, I felt my resolve failing. “Come on (Y/N). I noticed the way you look at me during class. How you come to almost all my office hours even if you don’t need the help.” I bit my lip and professor wright threw his dress shirt onto the desk. “So…” he smirked as he noticed my eyes roaming over his body. “Make your decision yet?” I nodded slowly.
“couch.” I breathed out. Professor wright nodded and I scrambled up. Undressing quickly and haphazardly, I laid out on the couch. He hummed appreciatively as he looked me over. “Please sir.” Professor wright palmed himself through his pants. I moaned as I watched him.
“since you asked so nicely.” He teased as he rid himself of his pants and boxers. Climbing between my legs, professor wright thrust into me and I wrapped my arms around him with a groan.
“oh fuck. Professor.” I whined. Professor wright started to thrust slowly as he pressed kisses along my shoulder. He latched onto my neck and started to bite down when I jerked my hips up to meet his.
“oh. Isn’t that a trick?” He chuckled as he bit down on my neck again. I moaned and squirmed under him. “Keep doing that and I definitely won’t last long.” Professor wright started to suck a hickey on my shoulder and I dug my nails into his back. “Just like that. Little more.” We were both panting as professor wright continued to nip and bite along my jaw.
“professor. Oh fuck. Please. Professor.” I moaned as I threw my head back. “Fuck!” I yelled as I orgasmed. Professor wright laughed and sped up, chasing his own orgasm while riding mine out. He soon spilled in me and leaned up to press a kiss to my lips.
“consider your grade changed.” He whispered against my lips. “I think an A is more appropriate.” I reached up and brushed his hair out of his face.
“Nelson, next time you want a quickie just ask.” I laughed. He smiled down at me and pulled out. Helping me sit up, Nelson pressed another kiss to my lips before moving to grab something to clean me up.
“Where’s the fun in that?” He laughed. “I like this a whole lot more.” I rolled my eyes as I started to get dressed again. “You’ll want to cover up that one on your neck.” I turned to look at my reflection in the picture frame holding Nelson’s degree.
“Nelson you asshole.” I giggled as I pulled a scarf out of my bag. “I’ll get you back for this.” Nelson grabbed my waist and pulled me into him. I played with his chest hair as he kissed me.
“I wouldn’t expect anything less.” He agreed. “Tonight? Your place?” I nodded.
“see you then.” I kissed him again before slipping out of his office.

warnings: swearing, Nelson’s experiment is mentioned
I looked up from my book as the door chimed. A boy around my age with blond hair and blue eyes smiled over at me as he walked in.
“hi. Welcome in.” I chirped out before watching him disappear into the stacks. I turned back to my book, glancing up every so often to make sure he was doing ok and the other students weren’t trying to access porn on the public computers.
“Hi.” I jumped slightly at the sound and looked up. “Sorry. Didn’t mean to scare you.” I waved him off and put my book to the side.
“it’s fine. What can I help you with?” I asked the boy standing in front of me.
“I uh…” the boy nervously scratched his jaw as he looked over my station. “Is that one flew over the cuckoos nest? Sorry.” I looked at him with a smile.
“uh yes it is. You read it?” I asked, slightly surprised someone recognized the cover. the boy nodded.
“yeah. Sorry. It’s a good book.” He said eyes flicking back up to mine. “I’m looking for some medical journals. My teacher said they’d be here…” I nodded and pulled up the catalog on my computer.
“is there a specific one or just medical journals in general?” I asked, fingers poised over the keyboard. The boy watched me awestruck.
“in general. I don’t know which ones I’m looking for really. Need to write a paper and thought that would be a good place to start.” He watched as I pulled it up and wrote down the section. “Can I check those out or do they have to stay here?” I went to hand him the piece of paper with the call number.
“they stay here but if there is something specific you want to take with you, I can scan the page and make a copy for you.” I said, smiling at him. The boy stared at the paper in his hand and my smile turned sympathetic. “Need me to help you find it?” He nodded, a blush on his cheeks. “Come on.” I stood up and made my way out from behind the desk. “I’m (Y/N).” I held my hand out to him. He shook it.
“Nelson.” He shook my hand and followed me to where the medical journals were kept.
“Well Nelson. Here we are. If you need anything else, you know where to find me.” I said with a smile and headed back to my desk. Nelson walked out about an hour later, waving as he went. I waved back and went back to my book. Nelson continued to come in twice a week, talking to me for half an hour before spending hours on end in the medical journals. “Nelson?” I said softly as I leaned against the end of a book shelf. “We’re closing. You’ve been up here for hours.”
“what?” Nelson said as his head popped up. His hair was all over the place and his glasses were slipping down his nose. He pushed them up and stared at me confused.
“we’re closing. I’m doing final checks.” I said as I smiled softly at him.
“shit.” Nelson swore as he scrambled to put the journals in an orderly pile.
“hey. Hey.” I put my hand on his arm and stopped him. “I’ll put those down at the desk. Come in tomorrow when I’m on shift and just pick up where you left off.” Nelson nodded and helped me scoop up the journals he had pulled off the shelves. We carried them down to the desk and stacked them next to my usual spot. I put a note on them, letting the morning librarian know I was going to take care of them when I came in.
“thank you.” Nelson said, blushing bright red as I let him out. “Can I walk you back to your dorm or apartment or whatever?” He rubbed the back of his neck. “To make up for holding you up?” I nodded with a smile.
“sure let me grab my shit.” I said as I ducked back in for my bag. Locking up on my way out, I hurried down the stairs to where Nelson was waiting for me. “All set.” I said as he stood up. We smiled at each other before heading in the direction of my apartment. “So what are you researching?” Nelson blushed and kicked a rock across the street.
“you’ll think it’s morbid or silly or something. My friends do.” He chuckled. I shook my head as I bumped his shoulder.
“promise I won’t.” I said. “You don’t make fun of me for what I read. I won’t make fun of you for what you research.” Nelson nodded.
“that’s true.” He muttered. “I’m researching what comes after death.” Nelson admitted after a while.
“that is interesting.” I said as I glanced over at him. “Find what you’re looking for?” Nelson shook his head.
“no. Now I’m trying to figure out how to…” Nelson stopped abruptly. “Actually you should have plausible deniability. Just in case.” I nodded and Nelson relaxed a little. “Sorry. It’s just…I have something planned and I don’t want you to get in trouble if it goes wrong.”
“it’s ok Nelson. I get it.” I said and smiled softly at him. “Here’s me. Thanks Nelson. See you tomorrow.” He nodded and waited until I had gone into the building before leaving. The next day, Nelson didn’t show up. I didn’t see him for a week and I was loathe to admit that I missed him. The next time I saw him, I was closing up the library. Nelson was running down the sidewalk, long coat flapping in the breeze. “Nelson?” I called when he got close enough.
“(Y/N).” Nelson wrapped me up in a hug and I laughed as he practically curled around me. “Youre not going to believe it. It worked. It fucking worked.” The joy was clear in his voice and I tightened my grip on him.
“you did the experiment?” I asked, pulling back some to brush some of his hair out of his eyes. He nodded eagerly. “Oh thank god.” I whispered as I pulled him back to me. “Thank god.” Nelson tightened his grip on me.
“Can I take you on a date? Please?” He whispered in my ear. I pulled back to look at him, holding onto the sides of his coat.
“Nelson…” he shook his head.
“life’s too short. And I had what I needed after the second day.” Nelson admitted. “There was no reason for me to keep coming back. Let alone for the damn medical journals.” I blushed and shook my head.
“dammit Nelson.” I laughed. I reached up to cup his cheeks and one of his hands covered mine. Nelson smiled softly at me as I nodded. “I’ll go out with you. Yes.” I laughed again and wrapped my arms around his neck. “I was so worried about you this past week. Thank god you’re alright.”
“I’ll always come back.” Nelson promised. “For you, I’ll always come back.”

warnings: talk of death, Nelson wants to go through with his experiment, swearing
running my hands through my hair, I took a shaky breath.
“Nelson,” i sighed. “This is a bad idea. A real terrible, shit idea.” He shrugged as he looked at me over the rim of his cup.
“Oh come on (Y/N). You can’t tell me you never thought about what comes next.” Nelson shot back. I bit my lip and he smiled triumphantly at me. “This is our chance to see what’s on the other side. All I’m asking you to do is record it. You don’t have to be a part of it anymore than that.” I shook my head and sighed again.
“Nelson what you are doing is fucking suicide.” I said with a hard edge to my tone. “Literally. Or homicide depending on you look at it. Have you listened to suicide survivors versus real near death experiences? Suicide survivors have a vastly different view of the afterlife because they fucked around and found out. Near death experience is a whole other realm.”
“and how am I supposed to replicate a near death experience without it being construed as a suicide attempt? Huh?” Nelson growled. “I can’t. So I go the route I know. The one I know my classmates can bring me back from.”
“assisted suicide then.” I cried, throwing my hands up. “Dammit Nelson.” I put my head in my hands and took a shuddering breath. “Do you have any idea what this is going to do to me?” I looked at him, tears shining in my eyes.
“do to you? I’m coming back.” He laughed. I shook my head.
“And if Dave can’t bring you back? Or Rachel?” I asked. “You and I both know steckle is only there for the equipment and to be the voice of reason. Joe is just there for kicks.” Nelson looked at me with an eyebrow raised. “What happens then? You can’t tell me that isn’t a possibility.” We sat in silence for a few minutes.
“they can do it.” He whispered, reaching out to grab my hand. I pulled it back from him.
“and if they can’t? I want to know what happens then Nelson.” I shot back. “You are so damn positive this will work you can’t even think of the fucking reproductions.” I threw the papers he had given me back across the table at him as I stood up. “Like what would happen to the four of them if it was found out what you roped them into. Or what would happen to me.”
“I’ve got a note absolving them of any responsibility.” Nelson said, standing up with his hands up trying to calm me down. “You don’t have anything to do with this except recording. They can’t touch you. Besides you’re not even in the department.” Nelson gently wrapped his arms around me. I hit his chest, making him curl in on himself and step back slightly.
“Ow.” He moaned as I hit him again. “Hey. Stop. What’re you doing that for?” He tried to grab my hands but I kept hitting him.
“I don’t care about my reputation. Or if I’m kicked out of school. I’ll go somewhere else.” I ground out as I accidentally slapped him. Nelson grabbed my wrist and held tight. “I care about what happens to me after you’re gone. Do you expect me to move on? Go about my days with the same cold exterior you’re expected to have as a doctor? Forget you’re gone and just find someone else?” I finally started crying and I collapsed against Nelson’s chest as he hugged me tightly. He sighed and rubbed my back as I gripped his shirt tightly. Nelson pressed his nose to my head and kissed me gently.
“I get it now.” He whispered. “I get it.” His grip tightened on me and I gently hit his chest again.
“no you don’t.” I chuckled. “You never do. But that’s alright.” I pulled back to look at him. “I’ll be there Nelson. But I won’t record. I won’t help. Not unless I need to.” Nelson nodded, cupping my cheeks to wipe away my tears. “I know you all are certified but if they can’t do it, I’m going to be the one to do CPR. I’ll bring you back.” Nelson nodded as he gently kissed me, making sure he showed me how much he loved me in it.
“I don’t doubt that. Not for one second.” He whispered as he drew back. He rubbed his thumb over my cheek before drawing me back to his chest. “I love you.” I sniffled and hugged him tighter.
“I love you too.” I whispered back. “Just promise you’ll come back to me. Just come back to me.”
“I promise.” Nelson assured me. “I’ll always come back to you.”

warnings: swearing, talk of death, mention of the experiment from flatliners
I leaned against the door to the classroom as I watched Dr. Wolfson teach his class on clinical death. The information he was giving them seemed awfully familiar to the writings he’d shared with me of his own experiment decades ago. I raised an eyebrow at the group of five students who were rapidly taking notes. Everyone else was taking notes but not like these five. They were hanging on his every word. When wolfson looked up from the students, he smiled at me.
“if you’ll excuse me class.” He said as he walked over. He put a hand on my arm in greeting as he led me out into the hall. “What’s up?” Nelson asked. I smiled and shook my head.
“I’m not allowed to watch you teach?” I asked with a laugh. Nelson smiled wider and shrugged.
“I mean technically you should have enrolled in the class.” I laughed. “Seriously everything ok?”
“yeah. I overheard some of the kids mentioning that you were going to talk about clinical death.” I said, a knowing look on my face. Nelson looked sheepishly at me. I lowered my voice. “Nelson, you can’t tell them…”
“I know. I’m keeping it vague.” Nelson said. He rubbed my arm as he looked down. “I…yeah alright.” He sighed as he tapped his cane against the ground. “I’ll go over the repercussions too. Talk about what can happen if done wrong or, for lack of a better term, the side effects.” I reached out and put my hand on his waist, squeezing gently.
“thank you.” I said softly. “There’s five kids in there taking notes as if they’re the Ten Commandments. Be careful.” Nelson nodded before looking over his shoulder at the class.
“I’m sorry.” He said, more to the classroom than me. I cupped his cheek and turned his head back towards me. Leaning in, I kissed him gently. Nelson smiled into the kiss before breaking away. “And they’re looking. I won’t live this one down.” He laughed, backing away from me slowly.
“so what. They’ve done worse with each other.” I laughed. Nelson shook his head and went back into the classroom where the kids immediately started to make fun of him with kissy noises among other things.
“alright alright. Settle down. Dr. (Y/L/N) was just leaving.” Nelson looked at me with a smile, shaking his head at his students antics. “Alright now. Back to work.” I walked away as Nelson continued his lecture from where I had interrupted him. Later that night, Nelson and I were sitting in his townhouse after handing out candy all night.
“Nelson?” I asked, looking over at him as the last of the kids ran down the steps, two of them dressed as doctors. He hummed as he set up another movie for us to watch. “You know what they’re doing tonight don’t you?” I looked over at him with a worried look. Nelson sighed and came over to wrap his arms around me.
“yeah I do. Same shit I did in med school.” He nodded, resting his head against mine. I reached up and ran my fingers through his hair. “They’re smart kids though. I’m sure they’ll be ok.”
“like you were ok?” I asked, eyes flicking back to Nelson’s cane. He sighed. “I’m sorry. It’s just…” Nelson broke away and pulled me away from the door.
“I know. I’m worried about them too.” He admitted. “There isn’t anything I can do except report them. And then I’d feel responsible for putting the idea in their heads. Either way.”
“and reporting them would create a double standard since they aren’t doing anything their professors haven’t done.” I continued. Nelson nodded. “And if we showed up while they were doing it, we could scare them or shock them into something even more problematic than what they’re already doing.” I leaned my head on Nelson’s shoulder as we sat down on the couch.
“I’ll check in with them tomorrow. Make sure they are ok.” Nelson promised. “I think I know who is going under too. Which makes this so much worse.” He took off his glasses, running a hand down his face and staring at the ceiling. Sighing, we sat in silence while the movie played in the background. “I should never have done that myself.” I turned my head to look at him, reaching out and hugging his arm.
“at least you didn’t publish the paper.” I pointed out. Nelson nodded.
“they’d have step by step instructions then.” He agreed. Leaning my head down on his shoulder, I bit my lip. “I feel so helpless.”
“there isn’t anything you can do. Not right now.” I murmured. “Tomorrow, we’ll pull them aside. Tell them we know.”
“I…fuck I’d hate to do it…I can see if joe still has the tape.” I pulled back and stared at him. Nelson kept his gaze on the ceiling, biting his lip and trying not to look at me. “We don’t go over anything in it but it shows how…” he swallowed and squeezed his eyes shut. “How they nearly lost me.” I bit my lip and stared at my lap.
“you never told me that.” I whispered. Nelson nodded. “Why didn’t you tell me that?” I looked over at him to find him watching me, tears pricking my eyes.
“you know why.” He said as he reached over to wipe my cheeks. “You know exactly why.” Nelson leaned in to kiss me but I pulled back.
“Nelson.” I whispered, shaking my head. He nodded and held his arm out for me. I curled against him, ear pressed to his chest. His heart beat in my ear as I took deep breaths, realizing that there was more to his little excitement than he had let on.
“I know. I’m sorry.” Nelson said as he kissed my head. “You don’t have to watch the tape. I’ll do it on my own.” I squeezed him tightly.
“thank you.” I whispered. Nelson nodded and the doorbell rang. Nelson got up, gently prying me from him.
“I got it.” He whispered, kissing me gently. I nodded as he answered the door and handed out the candy. “Come here.” He murmured as he went to sit back down. “You aren’t getting rid of me that easily.” I nodded as I curled into him. We sat in silence for a bit. “What time does trick or treating end?” I pulled Nelson’s arm towards me so I can check his watch. He started to chuckle and smiled at me. “I think it’s time for you to get a watch. Or start carrying your phone around with you like everyone else.” I rolled my eyes at him and scoffed.
“as if that’s what you do.” Nelson scoffed at me in return and waited while I checked his watch. “It ended half an hour ago.” I said, letting his hand drop. Nelson nodded, gently pushing me off him so he could turn the light off and grabbed the candy bowl.
“want some?” He asked as he held it out to me. I nodded and grabbed some. Nelson sat down next to me and put the bowl between us. “So tomorrow we’ll confront them and if they refuse to stop then I show them the video after you leave.” I nodded.
“sounds like a plan.” I dug into the bowl a bit more to grab some of the good stuff. “And thank you. For not making me…” I trailed off as I stared at the candy in my hands. Shaking my head, I looked up at Nelson again. “Thank you.” Nelson nodded and leaned across the bowl to kiss me.
“of course.” He said, cupping my cheek. Leaning his forehead against mine, Nelson rubbed my cheek. “Happy Halloween.” He smiled softly at me.
“happy Halloween Nelson.” I smiled back at him.
