R.I.P. Akira Toriyama (1955-2024)

I did a portrait of Akira and Toribot as tribute illustration.

This was made shortly after Akira Toriyama's passing was announced to the public. It's undeniable he had a major effect on my art and work, so, since im bad with words, i wanted to show my gratitude in an art piece.

Rest in peace, legend.

背景で力尽き、悟空の目許を似せることに妥協した感がある。反省。

お手本のコマに無い線は置かないことを心がけた。

模写していて気がついたが、ひょっとして鳥山先生は原稿に修正液をほとんど使わなかったのではないだろうか。

Honestly, we really just took the chestnut Frieza part and ran with it.

RIP Legend

Toriyama's death was much a trainwreck to wake up to. It felt like a dream, like it was fake but no. It was everywhere.

Toriyama made a world that i looked up onto on my knees with wide eyes, watching this story and world unfold in its colors. So many ideas, so many cool and unforgettable designs. Dragon Ball and Toriyama's other works, like Sandland, Jaco, Nekomajin inspired me like nothing before as i fell into this world of 7 wish orbs. I based my art style on his, i tried to perfect in it, become better, aiming up to creative designs Toriyama sensei always was known for. Fancy and wonderous worlds. He was like a God i worshipped in art. And now... it breaks my heart into pieces...

I am very thankful to him for indirectly guiding my path, teaching me. I owe him a lot. And i hope he gets his dirty magazines in heaven like a champ.

Dragon Ball gave me inspirations, characters like Frieza and Zamasu that became my whole hearted passion, fire from which i could carve out my own ideas. I am forever thankful for that. For all fun it gave us. If i ever could get my hands on legendary balls...

Id wish to become like him.

This took me a while, so it may seem late compared to everyone else's.

For the curious, from left to right: Beelzebub (SandLand) Kajika (Kajika) Jaco (Jaco the Galactic Patrolman / Dragon Ball Super) Shu (Blue Dragon) I know there are more, like Nekomajin, Chowa, Ackman, Cashman and so forth, but I stuck with those i know a little better.

I hope the passing of Akira Toriyama inspires people to check out his other stuff, I get the feeling he wanted more than being "the Dragon Ball creator". Some of his work (Nekomajin, Jaco, and the dynamics surrounding the character Beerus) feel like him trying to do more of his comedic stuff while having to create more DB-related content.

Also I really hope the cause of his death wasn't from being overworked. All these pieces about his impact would take a sinister turn if even he wasn't able to rest.

Kinda funny to realize that Toriyama accidentally created a complex shared universe within Dragon Ball. The many crossovers with Dr. Slump means it’s in the same universe. Galactic Patrol Jaco starts off as a comedic sci-do manga until Tights sister is revealed to be Bulma. Jiya manga stars a co-worker of Jaco. Sachie-Chan is about a girl who gets ninja abilities and defeats a gang who get arrested by Galactic Patrol. Nekomajin Z stars a cat who trains under Goku along with Uub in the future.
