He's quite. Far too quite for her liking. Rose tenderly stretches out a hand to him. "Murphy?" She's called his name four times to no avail. "What's wrong. What's in the letter?" While she doesn't out rightly express it, she is concerned about him. (Maybe when he gets a letter about his brother or something?)

Murphy’s eyes kept trailing over the printed words, as if re-reading them might magically make them change into something else. Unfortunately, it had not happened yet, and this was his twelfth attempt. His attention is so rapt he does not hear Rose calling his name, trying to pull his focus away from the letter in his hands. At long last, a movement the redhead makes catches the corner of his eye. His head moves, looking up at her slowly as he realizes he is still sitting in his living room. Rose’s concerned question finally registers in his mind, and he swallows.

“It’s…it’s about Conall.” He manages to name the brother who had died in Vietnam. Murph knows he has mentioned Conall a few times over the years, but only rarely and in a hushed tone. Every year the Michaels family goes to Arlington to visit his grave, but Rose has not yet penetrated the inner circle enough to make that pilgrimage. Perhaps this year… “He… he was killed on the border of Cambodia in 1970. But it appears he had a kid over there before he got shot…” Murph pauses to think, “Man… the kid must be a is a teenager by now.” He glances at the letter again. “When everything went to hell in 1975, and Saigon fell, his mom managed to get them out of there and made it to the States. They were sent to live in Louisiana. Only she’s sick… she doesn’t say what she has, but it sounds like it’s serious. She wants me to come pick up Quan so he doesn’t end up in the system if she winds up in the hospital.” Murph’s eyes re-focus on the paper. He will have to tell his parents. None of them had any idea Conall even had a girlfriend over there. He would bet even Pat did not know—he was too focused on his own missions and teams to worry about what Conall was doing on his off time.

Dropping the sheets of paper on the table, Murph rubs at his face before sinking deeper into his chair. “I’m going to have to go get the kid… but what am I going to tell mom and dad?”

Murphy warned her this was going to happen. That the school officer would eventually catch her skipping out and she'd have to face the music. It's a little late to turn back the clock, wishing she had done exactly as the PI instructed. The little voice in the back of her head reminds her that she ought to have heeded his warning.

Her pink backpack is protectively crumpled into her lap and her sheepish eyes flick up towards the copper-haired man. His offering of a listening ear is strangely inviting, but first, she better get the real problems out of her way. "You-- you don't have to call my parents do you?" If he did call the Cooper household, he was likely to be subjected to a few rounds of their nasty bickering.

"Haven't you ever played hookie?" The thirteen-year-old presses slinking down into the chair opposite him. Swallowing sharply she adds, "for no reason at all?" But there was a reason. A good reason ( Okay, well maybe, a decent reason) that she was bouncing so far off the rails.

One doesn't travel down the road of Modern Military History very far without stumbling across the legendary Audie Murphy. He's been on my horizon for a long time, but my interest was strongly peaked when he was brought up in a discussion about the validity of the movie Fury. Since I love Fury, I knew I needed to read Murphy's story.

I found an older paperback smelling much like the Louis L'Amour books of my childhood at Half Price and instantly gathered it close to be read and cherished.

What a book it proved to be. The descriptions are beautiful and heartbreaking, the action intense, the comradery glorious.

As a writer, I basked in the dialog. It had me crying and laughing. It was so well done. The back and forth between the men with little to no tags to clue me in on who was talking quickly grew easy to follow as you learned the different men's voices. This only made it more heartbreaking as they died off, and the dialog filled with unknown replacements.

More than once, I saw where Fury pulled is story from, which was wonderful. More than once I laughed, and more than once I ached with tears for these men and what they endured.

Murphy was a true American hero and it made me smile to love two different Murphys who both have Medals of Honor.

Skipping Class--Missy & Murphy

Murphy slides into the movie theater seat next to Missy. They are the only two people in the theater right now… no one else really cares for a Tuesday 2pm showing of Aquamanic vs the Atomic Gila Monster. In fact, he does not care either and he has a hunch Missy is not overly invested in the antics of guys in rubber monster suits beating on each other herself. She still keeps watching the screen though.

He lets the movie play for a few minutes before speaking. “You can’t keep skipping school, Missy. Sooner or later, you’re going to get in trouble.”

Admittedly, tracking the missing girl down had not been hard for the trained PI, but he was getting tired of doing it. This has become a weekly occurrence now… Missy skips at least one day of her classes to run around Los Angeles. He knew moving all the way from Texas had been a hard adjustment, but that does not mean she can keep doing this to herself or him.

He watches another few minutes of the movie. “Care to tell me why you skipped this time? Last time you said it was because a few of your friends skipped. The week before that, you said it was because you were sick of your history class.” Like most troubled teenagers, Murph knows Missy’s problems do not lie in something as simple as boring classes or bad influence friends. Something deeper is driving her forward into these actions… but that is something only Missy knows. Until she can sort it out and vocalize it, if she ever choses to do so, it will remain a mystery. He will just have to keep trying to clean up the mess she leaves in her wake.

Skipping School continued from X

Jagged lightning appears in Missy's eyes at his seemingly clever quip. "What's the point? Everyone knows I'm not as smart as Sheldon." It's a tough fate to swallow but she's been swallowing it since she was three. Everything she tries her hands at feels like a failure. Math, English, Science they're all complicated art forms that sail way above the fathoms of her head. Missy wasn't at all a fan of struggling, so she didn't try at all.

Her latest teacher accused her of 'cheating' while taking a test simply because she was whispering with Billy. No one else seems to know what's going down in her family and yet, he seemed to be a remarkably insightful source of information. Correct information. He knew Georgie's baby was a girl before she did. He knew that her father and his mother Brenda were spending evenings alone in the chickencoop. When confronted, Missy lashed out. Saying she forgot, the teacher would know what cheating looked like given the way her husband was carrying on.

Then with a wistful expression she slips an imperative tidbit in under the radar. "'Sides they don't want you in school when you're suspended." Lowering her voice a few pitches, she adds. "Might have to take in this cruddy movie a few more times." So her suspension had an awful lot to do with the turmoil between her parents. "They wouldn't sell me the ticket for Too Hot in Seattle or Raiders of the Lost Ark. It's like they don't think I've ever seen rated "R" things before. I've seen things on Pay-per-view." She grumpily rumbles. Being thirteen sucks. Her weary, stormy eyes return to the screen just in time to watch the Aquamaniac take a dramatic nose dive from a cliff. A sigh unfurls itself from her lungs. As bad as this movie was, she wasn't exactly interested in Grandma goes to Hollywood or any of the other offbrand titles boasted in flashing lights.

Missy shrugs. "It was definitely about me in general." The confession is made between noms on popcorn. Who cares where the blame laid? "They think the other s to blame for my attitude, for all the trouble I've been getting into lately." Her chilled gaze averts, pinning to Murphy the way darts to bullseyes when he speaks again. Bemused wonder melts a little of the anger into something more mailable. "You-- you did?" Her stance in the stiff seat shifts. "What did you do about it?"

Once more young Cooper slinks backwards into the chair. "The police?" She scoffs. "That would be the day." The concept however wasn't that unimaginable. A part of Missy tries to swallow her dear friend Paige's fate down at the expression of his words. "Thank God. I'd just as soon keep my parents out of this--"She grits out. The mention of juvie has her head spinning disastrously. Her parents would go ballistic. As if they weren't going nuclear enough. Her gaze returns to the screen trying to wash the terrorizing reality of his words to abate.

Instead of turning more introverted and introspective, Missy avoids the topic like a plague. "Just how did you find me anyways?" She mutters, crunching down another series of handfuls of popcorn. "And why's it matter to you if I go off the rails?"
