Murphy warned her this was going to happen. That the school officer would eventually catch her skipping out and she'd have to face the music. It's a little late to turn back the clock, wishing she had done exactly as the PI instructed. The little voice in the back of her head reminds her that she ought to have heeded his warning.

Her pink backpack is protectively crumpled into her lap and her sheepish eyes flick up towards the copper-haired man. His offering of a listening ear is strangely inviting, but first, she better get the real problems out of her way. "You-- you don't have to call my parents do you?" If he did call the Cooper household, he was likely to be subjected to a few rounds of their nasty bickering.

"Haven't you ever played hookie?" The thirteen-year-old presses slinking down into the chair opposite him. Swallowing sharply she adds, "for no reason at all?" But there was a reason. A good reason ( Okay, well maybe, a decent reason) that she was bouncing so far off the rails.
