If at first you don’t succeed….Duck Dodgers pitch cover - This second attempt to sell Duck Dodgers as a television show in Oct. 1998, had Lola Bunny joining the crew, Sparky being reduced to a smaller role with Dodgers’ rival Star Johnson. John P. McCann was in charge of revamping this version of the show. He asked me and Tony Cervone to adapt the artwork to reflect this new direction.

(Archive) Animated short film of the day: Duck Amuck (1953)
There's something decidedly self indulgent but nevertheless interesting about using entertainment to discuss entertainment itself: Deconstructions, parodies, and in this case, getting meta; one of the most cerebral and fascinating… if done right. When used poorly it becomes a hand wave or a cynical tool to divert attention away of a work's flaws or be patronising to the audience. When used properly though? It can give us an insight on why we love a medium so much. Which is why this short is a landmark for commercial western animation.
While not the first to make use of the concept of an animator directly interacting with the cartoon character, as Disney's Saludos Amigos (1942) already had some of this, it pushed everything about this gag to the limit. The story(loosely using the term) is pretty much just Daffy getting messed with by whoever is animating(take a guess who that turns out to be) to such an extreme at various different points nothing that is identifiable about Daffy stays: The voice? The character design? Both get played with to nigh unrecognizable points to see how much you can take away while still keeping the audience engaged. And engaged it should be, as not only is the work hilarious but also a small but delicious insight of how animation is made.
Well…was.
It's a short made in the 50's, so some of the gags that may have been a little more obvious then would require some clarification for modern viewers. The core of it, though, remains as appealing as it ever was. Looney Toons shorts can be hit and miss in some areas(some having aged horrendously for a plethora of reasons) but when they hit the mark, they're absolute guaranteed classics and this is one of the best for being so bold on it's approach.

At the time, Chuck and Mike [Maltese] were working on a new cartoon with two new characters, the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote. There wasn't going to be any dialogue in this picture, but Mike thought it might be good if the Road Runner, as he confronted and tormented the Coyote, kept saying, "Beep, beep". Chuck agreed and asked Paul to do the voice-over. The cartoon was "Fast and Furry-ous", released in 1949. It wasn't until three years later that Chuck's unit made other Road Runner and Coyote pictures. but, in each and everyone, the "Beep, beep" was that of Paul Julian. No screen credit was given though, since he was not a member of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG).

This August 3rd-9th, 2002 TV Guide cover featuring Daffy Duck and Porky Pig as Duck Dodgers and The Eager Young Space Cadet, paired with the Powerpuff Girls, was one of four covers with fun cartoon mashups, celebrating the 50 greatest cartoon characters. Tony Cervone and I provided the art for Daffy and Porky, Darren Hunt and Kevin Mackenzie are credited for the Powerpuff Girls art. For the record, Daffy ranked 14th, Porky finished 47th. You can thank Hugh Harman for that. At that time, there was a columnist in the Los Angeles Examiner who wrote about fictitious senator called "Congressman Frizby". Hugh had a hard time calling me "Isadore", so he nicknamed me "Congressman"; and then he started calling me "Congressman Frizby". Then the gang picked up on that and shortened it to "Frizby, which soon became "Friz". And that kind of stuck to me. After a while I was only known as "Friz". We had been told by one of the salespeople that the name Isadore was a hard name to sell down South. Mike Maltese suggested that I use "Friz" on the screen credits. "People with 'z's in their names are usually successful", Mike said. So I said "That's OK with me, everybody calls me that, anyway". So we started using "Friz Freleng". I think that was in the '50s sometime.
