I just rewatched A Servant of Two Masters and can we talk about how brilliant Colin Morgan is at acting!! I mean when isn't he but- in this episode he plays three different versions of himself!! Merlin, Assassin Merlin & Dragoon! And they're all so different and layered & amazing.

The way he switches between them in one moment and the next or how one comes through in another. When he's Dragoon you still ofc get the emotions of Merlin (because he's Merlin putting on a role). And with Assassin Merlin he's almost like a more extreme version of Dragoon (plus murder obviously).

I was looking for pictures of servants in Merlin and I have to say, there is a telling amount of a specific result when the word "servant" is put in a Merlin search...

Gee, I wonder why this specific scene of Merlin being held captive is so popular, that's so bizarre! Do you guys know why? 🤔

do you ever think about how gwaine is canonically given the fandom favorite romance tropes that people typically write for merlin and arthur in fics? gwaine being the only person who goes out of his way to consistently check up on merlin emotionally? protecting merlin from bullying nobles? recognizing and verbally acknowledging merlin's selflessness? worrying openly about his well-being and visibly showing joy when he's okay? the physical touches, the sleeping in merlin's bed! like. for fuck's sake

honestly the amount of courage it must've taken arthur to admit that merlin might not even be alive anymore is rlly something.

gaius walks into the room and asks "where's merlin?" - we're talking about gaius, someone arthur respects and values the opinion of greatly, but more importantly merlin's guardian, his father figure. sure, "he's alive" is his first answer - the hopeful, optimistic, reassuring answer. the 'don't worry, i've got everything under control and it'll all be fine' answer. but then maybe he realises that could be a lie. he doesn't know if that's true, and maybe lying to gaius' face about it is worse than admitting his failure.

so he continues to look gaius in the eye and tell him merlin (who he lost, in the middle of the forest, injured, weak, unwell, surrounded by bandits) was still alive, last he saw of him. he's saying 'i don't know if he's alive anymore, i dont know how he is, where he is, if he's ok'.

it probably makes him sick to his stomach saying it out loud, but he has to state it plain and true. he has to tell gaius that his ward (read: son) may no longer be alive. that takes guts.
