Could you help me name my new Mellanoid Slime OC?
They are a scientist on the USS Sonder specialising in astrophysics. They have a strong sense of aesthetics and will sometimes decorate themselves to look like space.
I have never drawn a slime person before. Hope this is alright.

before mellanoids began rapidly joining starfleet, finding a uniform that properly fit them was near impossible, resulting in mutilation of their uniforms to more comfortably fit. once more mellanoids joined starfleet, they engineered uniforms that better fit their physical needs! this is t’oumii on the cerritos before joining the feynman—luckily, by the time he was on the feynman, mellanoid-friendly uniforms had been engineered!

30 Days of Prodigy, day 19: Away Mission
Miral Paris peeked around the side of a storage container as Dal, Rok-Tahk, and Murf boarded the Flyer-A, carrying supplies for the away mission. The ship was nearing the suspected coordinates of the spatial rift that they were looking for and Aunt Kathryn Vice Admiral Janeway had ordered them to go down to the planet and scan for signs of temporal activity.
Miral was tired of being cooped up on the ship. She wanted some fresh air and adventure! Besides, she thought with an eye roll that would give her mother’s a run for its money, she was certain that if those kids could go on an away mission, she could too. They had never even heard of Starfleet a year ago. Miral was born on a starship.
While the rest of the team was distracted with trying to fit the large scanning equipment into the cargo section of the Flyer, Miral saw her chance and she tiptoed onto the shuttle and ducked behind one of the auxiliary chairs in the forward section. The others took no notice whatsoever. Ha! Easy! thought Miral proudly. Who says Klingons can’t be stealthy? (In fact, Lieutenant Vorik said that, just the other day when he caught Miral playing hide and seek with Toby the targ in engineering.)
The rest of the crew finally boarded the shuttle and Miral held her breath and squeezed her eyes shut as Murf did the security checks. As long as he didn’t find her before they took off, she’d be home free. The engines roared to life and Miral dared to open her eyes… only to find Murf staring right at her inquisitively. She silently raised a finger to her lips and her eyes pleaded with Murf to keep quiet. The Mellanoid creature cocked his head to the side and made a gesture with his hand as if to say “I’ve got my eyes on you” and then slowly backed away to his seat.
Murf sat at his console and finally faced front, but he kept whipping his head around to make sure that Miral hadn’t moved. Miral had a sneaking suspicion that this was not going to turn out the way she had planned.
Her suspicions were confirmed when she felt the tingle of a transporter beam and suddenly found herself huddled in the middle of her quarters.
Her combadge beeped and Rok-Tahk’s cheerful voice filled the room. “Sorry Miral! Maybe next time, if the Admiral says it's ok!”
“Maybe next time I won’t trust that dumb slime worm,” Miral grumbled as she picked herself up off the floor and left her quarters to look for something else to do. Maybe she’d scare Lieutenant Vorik. That would show him who’s stealthy.

Anika and Liz are rolling up to a starbase in a stolen starship, putting on our un-earned cadet uniforms and discussing the new episode of Star Trek: Prodigy and children in Star Trek in general!

We don’t actually think Dal is a Janeway/Paris salamander baby, but we have a lot of thoughts about how it would be great if he was
It would be terrible if the Diviner has done something to Gwyn to also make her a weapon. Absolutely awful. We wouldn’t enjoy that one little bit. Honest.
Rok-Tahk is safe to learn and make mistakes
If kids go from “Hey, Murf is a Mellanoid slime worm, let’s watch the only episode of Star Trek where those are mentioned,” they’ll watch “Coming of Age”, the episode where Wesley fails to get into the Academy (and that’s okay). Coincidence? Maybe!
Liz wants to be happy about finally getting the J/C hug she’s been waiting for since she was 14, but Robert Beltran’s making it hard
Anika has compiled some stats about children in Star Trek generally, and they are fascinating
Like, TOS had FOUR episodes about kids taking over the ship! Out of nine across the franchise, and that’s not counting Prodigy!
In fact, you can kind of track social attitudes towards children via their presence in Star Trek, which makes it alarming that SNW keeps killing them

doing the shading on the uniform had me fighting for my life. I am not really happy with it. But the slime shading is some of my best. I tried to match Prodigy's art style without, you know, doing any CGI modelling.

Ive been seeing a lot of slime people star trek ocs and I've seemingly tracked it back to your blog (which looks amazing btw, love ur art) but is anyone allowed to make a mellanoid OC, or is it simply allowed to certain people?/gen
yeah you can make a mellanoid slime OC if you want to. All of the mellanoid lore and stuff is just an extremely elaborate headcanon for a canon species we know next to nothing about.
Feel free to ask me any questions you have about the lore or their biology too. (I really ought to have like a Mellanoid Worldbuilding main post with links to the various lore posts and art I've done beyond just Guz herself. And make more lore posts too. A lot of it is confined to conversations I've had on discord which is not ideal)
There's only a small handful of Mellanoid Slime Worms in Starfleet (or in space at all) during the Lower Decks era or a little earlier. Guz disappointed a lot of people by joining Starfleet instead of joining her homeworld's Space Program (a space program which does not yet have the ability to reliably travel outside of their solar system). However, by the late 2390s and especially 2400s, Mellanoids start pouring into Starfleet.
Mellanoid Slimes are most commonly humanoid, but they can have other body types, ranging from animal-like to abstract shapes. Mellanoid Slimes can be any gender, but they are all assigned agender at birth and their society struggles with accepting that gender as a category of identity even exists. This can play into xenophobia resulting from Mellanus' fast-tracked entry into the Federation too--many Mellanoids consider expression of gender at all to be assimilation into the Federation, and that is quite unpopular among Mellanoids old enough to remember Federation first contact.
