HE’LL BE RUNNING THE MARATHON HE ONCE DIRECTED
HE’LL BE RUNNING THE MARATHON HE ONCE DIRECTED
When TCS New York City Marathon Race Director Peter Ciaccia announced his retirement on May 30, 2018, it felt too soon. But after 18 years with the New York Road Runners, the last three as Race Director of the TCS New York City Marathon, Bronx-born Ciaccia called it enough.  Maybe that’s how it should be done, better early than late. Only, it seemed like he was just hitting his stride after…

Hamlet’s Age
Not to bring up an age-old debate that doesn’t even matter, but I have been thinking recently how interesting Hamlet’s age is both in-text and as meta-text.
To summarize a whole lot of discussion, we basically only have the following clues as to Hamlet’s age:
Hamlet and Horatio are both college students at Wittenberg. In Early Modern/Late Renaissance Europe, noble boys typically began their university education at 14 and usually completed at their Bachelor’s degree by 18 or 19. However, they may have been studying for their Master’s degrees, which was typically awarded by age 25 at the latest. For reference, contemporary Kit Marlowe was a pretty late bloomer who received a bachelor’s degree at 20 and a master’s degree at 23.
Hamlet is AGGRESSIVELY described as a “youth” by many different characters - I believe more than any other male shakespeare character (other than 16yo Romeo). While usage could vary, Shakespeare tended to use “youth” to mean a man in his late teens/very early 20s (actually, he mostly uses it to describe beardless ‘men’ who are actually crossdressing women - likely literally played by young men in their late teens)
King Hamlet is old enough to be grey-haired, but Queen Gertrude is young enough to have additional children (or so Hamlet strongly implies)
Hamlet talks about plucking out the hairs of his beard, so he is old enough to at least theoretically have a beard
In the folio version, the gravedigger says he became a gravedigger the day of Hamlet’s birth, and that he’s be “sixteene here, man and boy, thirty years.” However, it’s unclear if “sixteene” means “sixteen” or “sexton” (ie has he worked here for 16 years but is 30 years old, or has he been sexton there for thirty years?)
Hamlet knew Yorick as a young child, and the gravedigger says Yorick was buried 23 years ago. However, the first quarto version version of Hamlet says “dozen years” instead of “three and twenty.” This suggests the line changed over time. (Or that the bad quarto sucks - I really need to make that post about it, huh…)
Yorick is a skull, and according to the gravedigger’s expertise, he has thus been dead for at least 7-8 years - implying Hamlet is at least ~15yo if he remembers Yorick from his childhood
One important thing sometimes overlooked - Claudius takes the throne at King Hamlet’s death, not Prince Hamlet. That is mostly a commentary on English and French monarchist politics at the time, but it is strange within the internal text. A thirty year old Hamlet presumably would have become the new monarch, not the married-in uncle (unless Gertrude is the vehicle through which the crown passes a la Mary I/Phillip II - certainly food for thought)
Honestly, Hamlet is SO aggressively described as being very young that I’m fairly confident the in-text intention is to have him be around 18-23yo. Placing his age at 30yo simply does not make much sense in the context of his descriptors, his narrative role, and his status as a university student.
However, it doesn’t really matter what the “right” answer is, because the confusion itself is what makes the gravedigger scene so interesting and metatextual. We can basically assume one of the following, given the folio text:
Hamlet really is meant to be 30yo, and that was supposed to surprise or imply something to the contemporary audience that is now lost to us
Older actors were playing Hamlet by the time the folio was written down, and the gravedigger’s description was an in-text justification of the seeming disconnect between age of actor and description of “youth”
Older actors were playing Hamlet by the time the folio was set down, and the gravedigger’s description was an in-text JOKE making fun of the fact that a 30-something year old is playing a high-school aged boy. This makes sense, as the gravedigger is a clown and Hamlet is a play that constantly pokes fun at its own tropes and breaks the fourth wall for its audience
The gravedigger cannot count or remember how old he is, and that’s the joke (this is the most common modern interpretation whenever the line isn’t otherwise played straight). If the clown was, for example, particularly old, those lines would be very funny
Any way you look at it, I believe something is echoing there. It seems like this is one of the many moments in Hamlet where you catch a glimpse of some contemporary in-joke about theater and theater culture* that we can only try to parse out from limited context 430 years later. And honestly, that’s so interesting and cool.
*(My other favorite example of this is when Hamlet asks Polonius about what it was like to play Julius Caesar in an exchange that pokes fun of Polonius’ actor a little. This is clearly an inside-joke directed at Globe regulars - the actor who played Polonius must have also played Julius Caesar in Shakespeare’s play, and been very well reviewed. Hamlet’s joke about Brutus also implies the actor who played Brutus is one of the main cast in Hamlet - possibly even the prince himself, depending on how the line is read).

Note
45 for Laertes and Ophelia, 44 for Horatio, 38 for Polonius, 32 for Hamlet, 21 and 22 for Rosencrantz and Guildenstern
45 - favourite celebrity
Laertes: I suppose this one has canon already - the Normandic swordfighter, Lamond, that he discussed with Claudius in Act IV. Otherwise perhaps the Red Baron.
Ophelia: Mary Shelley.
44 - happiest memory
Horatio: The first time Hamlet took him on a "nighttime adventure" at Wittenberg (aka exploring areas in campus they really should not be going to). It's a combination of him realizing that Hamlet is a true friend and getting to try something new!
38 - favourite holiday
Polonius: Saturnalia (pushing my classics nerd Polonius agenda!); it's a time where servants can talk back to their masters without consequence, which is essentially what he wants to do with Hamlet all the time
32 - something guaranteed to make them smile or laugh
Hamlet: When Laertes makes sex jokes.
21 - drink of choice
R: martini.
G: sparkling water.
22 - best physical feature
R: Hair. Has the best natural curls
G: Nose.

A Break in the Clouds
In this painting, longing is lodged in the space that is opened by an imperfect memory—evoking a break in the clouds.
Schnapf’s work evokes a sensual and psychological space of dream and desire, memory and premonition. In the artist's paintings, multiple figures frequently overlap—while at the same time a single figure will assume various irreconcilable positions—in structurally dematerialized environments that surround and penetrate these figures. By dissolving and dislocating such compositional elements, Schnapf presents two sides of a singular moment: its pure depiction and its imagined state.

Ho-Chunk Gaming Wittenberg hosts local veteran to make his last wish come true
Along with having the restaurant closed to the public and only open to the couple, the details and care put into creating such a special meal definitely elevated the overall experience and a memory to cherish for all.
A north central Wisconsin gaming establishment made a final wish come true for a local Army veteran and his caretaker wife, both of Iola. An inquiry from Compassus Hospice in Stevens Point set in motion a flurry of teamwork to provide Ray Staral and his wife Mary Staral a memorable time for perhaps their last outing together. While providing care and support to patients and their families,…

This year will be the ninth annual awards luncheon, which will take place at the New York Athletic Club on Tuesday, November 7, the Tuesday following this year’s 2023 TCS New York City Marathon. The event has generated over $400,000 in donations in the first eight years it has been held. This year’s event will be hosted by Michele Yu, author and host of New York 1 News.
“The work that the New York Road Runners has done for causes large and small is nothing short of amazing, as we are proud to recognize the organization, from its founder the late Fred Lebow to the current leadership for all they do to help raise awareness and funds for literally thousands of people who never run a race,” Aanesen said. “Second but not least we are proud to honor the work that Dr. lee Jones and his team in Exercise Oncology have done at Memorial Sloan Kettering as they wrap up this critical stage of research and implementation. Without their vision, leadership and education the value of exercise as a vital part of cancer recovery may never have been realized.”
“It is an honor to accept this award on behalf of everyone past and present in at New York Road Runners,” said Rob Simmelkjaer, CEO. “The spirit and soul of one of our greatest champions, Grete Waitz, lives on in the terrific work Helle and AKTIV Against Cancer continue to do, and we are proud to be recognized amongst such an outstanding list of honorees past and present. Our work supporting the hundreds of causes tied to our events each year continues on, with a very bright future ahead.”
“This event has always been one of the highlights of our year, since the work we do ties directly to the goal and mission of AKTIV Against Cancer,” Dr. Jones added. “It has been a privilege to work so closely with Helle and the organization since we launched this project, and to see the tangible results of the work has been amazingly fulfilling, not just for our staff and volunteers but for the patients and their families and friends who are better in every way because of the discoveries we have made. It is a truly life changing effort.”

Wickenburg, AZ
Destination: Wickenberg, Arizona
In this episode: FAQ is: What are the five steps to Solo Travel?.
Today’s Destination is: Wittenberg, Arizona
Today’s Mistake- Forgetting my sunglasses
Travel Advice:  If you are going on a cruise, consider using a travel agent.
FAQ: What are the five steps to Travel?
Answer: They are steps from near to far in distance and in risk. It is a path to confidence and courage for your travel. You will improve your trip with each journey step if you are curious.
Start with accessible destinations and then more difficult ones. This guide gets you safely there and back home with a new confidence level. You’ll be ready for the next step in the next trip.
  Today’s destination: Wickenburg, Arizona
Team roping capital of the world. What is team roping? One guy gets the head and the other the heel. Four arenas here, and anyone can watch.
Cowboys roping steers starts at the end of April and ends in April, except for some Gold Rush Days.
Jackie works at the Ranch Dressing Store.
There is a Caballero Western Museum by the one traffic light in town. The museum will take 1-2 hours to visit. Memberships are available. You may volunteer as a guide for those who want to immerse themselves in art and history at one of the top Western Art Museums in the country.
Historic Wickenberg.
Rodeo Grounds, Hassayampa River Walk & Wishing Well Park, Henry Wickenburg Historic House, Desert Caballeros Western Museum, Town Hall, Coffinger Park, Sunset Park/Splash Pad
 It’s about an hour’s drive from Phoenix (65 miles)/
Bikers like it here. I noticed BC Jeep tours,
For culture, there is the Webb Center for the performing arts.
I noticed hardware stores and car-related businesses.
When I looked further, they have Ghost town toys, Vulture City Ghost Town Tours, 12 miles south of Wickenburg. It reminds me of a small town like Williams, AZ.
Travelbest: I had a buffet lunch on a Sunday afternoon in October, after driving from Phoenix. It was a beautiful day, and the convertible was the best mode of transportation to get there. It’s not clear on the map. I got a little lost but finally found it. Yelp and other recommendations were right. It was delicious food and great service. Plus, the gift store had a lot of cowboy stuff to enjoy. It’s a dude ranch, and they have groups who ride horses daily here. They close in May for the summer and open again in the fall. It’s too hot in the summer here.
Rancho Baballeros, locals call it, Los Cab. It’s a resort, saloon, restaurant, golf course,
Do visit a dude ranch.
Don’t plan to visit in the summer. It’s too hot.
  Today’s Mistake- Forgetting sunglasses.
I went on a trip through the desert and forgot to bring my good sunglasses.
In the meantime, I wore a brimmed hat. I bought new sunglasses as soon as possible. My eyes can get sunburned, like my skin. Protect them.
Today’s Travel Advice-If you are going on a cruise, consider using a travel agent.
The industry compensates the travel agent for booking your cruise. They will be your advocate in case of a problem or if you need extra support before, during, or after your cruise. It costs you no extra to use a travel agent to book your trip. You could save money if they give you good advice on navigating the journey.

Voice Actors for VA-11 HALL-A?
Years ago I played VA-11 HALL-A: Cyberpunk Bartending Action on Steam and I absolutely loved it. Just for shiggles I wrote up a incomplete list of who I thought would be great voice actors for the game at the time. It was left to dry until I recently bought VA-11 HALL-A for the Nintendo switch and out of boredom I decided to finish it and this was the end result:
Tara Strong as Jill.
Mary Elizabeth McGlynn as Dana
Gianni Matragrano as Gill.
Christopher Sabat as Donovan.
Charles White Jr. (AKA Cr1TiKaL) as Ingram.
Elias Toufexis as Jamie.
Paul C. Nodine as Virgilio.
Guy Cunningham as Taylor.
Marc Soskin (AKA GangXingBa) as Rad Shiba (Maybe?)
Dave Wittenberg as Nacho (Maybe?)
Taylor McNee as Dorothy and Anna.
Lindsay Jones as Sei, Norma and Gabriella (Maybe?)
Marÿke Hendrikse as Betty.
Corinne Sudberg (AKA Megami33) as Stella.
Ross Scott as Deal.
Jenny Slate as Alma.
AmaLee as *Kira* Mikki.
Sherry Lynn as Kim.
Sean Murray as Brian.
As for the secret characters...well, since they're all from the same game why not use their original voice actresses?
