HE’LL BE RUNNING THE MARATHON HE ONCE DIRECTED
HE’LL BE RUNNING THE MARATHON HE ONCE DIRECTED
When TCS New York City Marathon Race Director Peter Ciaccia announced his retirement on May 30, 2018, it felt too soon. But after 18 years with the New York Road Runners, the last three as Race Director of the TCS New York City Marathon, Bronx-born Ciaccia called it enough.  Maybe that’s how it should be done, better early than late. Only, it seemed like he was just hitting his stride after…

The bridge becomes a pivotal point in the race, showcasing not only the physical endurance of the runners but also the symbolic journey across boroughs.
Special Events:
Weddings and Proposals:

From light displays to temporary sculptures, artists have used the structure as a medium to express creativity and engage with the public. These installations often transform the bridge into a dynamic and ever-changing work of art.

New York City Marathon: Tens of thousands of runners. Hundreds of tons of trash.
Tumblr media
The New York City Marathon generates a good amount of trash: Last year it was 235 tons, to be exact, of Gatorade cups, squeezed-out energy gel packets, banana peels and spectators’ discarded signs cheering the racers on.
As soon as the first runners start to cross the finish line, over 250 Sanitation Department workers set to work, using mechanical brooms and backpack blowers to pick up the miles of trash strewn across each segment of the race. Come Monday morning, the job is done.
“It’s one of those things that people don’t really think about, but it’s incredible,” said Jessica Tisch, the sanitation commissioner. “Less than 24 hours after 50,000 people have run across so many miles of the city, the entire route is cleaned by the next morning.”
This year, those Gatorade cups will be made from bamboo, and after the race, they will be sent to a farm upstate[1] to be composted. Eighty-one volunteers are stationed at the start line and finish line to sort trash for recycling and composting.
In terms of cleanup challenges, Ms. Tisch said the marathon ranks right on top of the list, along with New Year’s Eve in Times Square. And while that annual celebration is concentrated in Midtown Manhattan, trash from the marathon ends up in each of the five boroughs.

REEXAMINING 2014 BOSTON - A RUN TO REMEMBER
(The following is based on my contemporaneous reporting of the 2014 Boston Marathon.) Ah, the mysteries of racing. Which is why pure, non-paced competition is almost always more compelling than time-trialing. The only question in a paced race is whether the pace and finishing time can be attained, not how it is attained, as that has been predetermined. If ever there was a case for competition…

2023 AKTIV Against Cancer Benefit To Honor The Philanthropic Work Of The New York Road Runners
Tumblr media
AKTIV Against Cancer, the organization co-founded by legendary runner Grete Waitz, and Helle Aanesen, announced today that New York Road Runners and the Exercise Oncology Team at Memorial Sloan Kettering will be this years honorees with the latter receiving the Gabe Grunewald Inspiration Award. This year will be the ninth annual awards luncheon, which will take place at the New York Athletic Club on Tuesday, November 7, the Tuesday following this year’s 2023 TCS New York City Marathon. The event has generated over $400,000 in donations in the first eight years it has been held. This year’s event will be hosted by Michele Yu, author and host of New York 1 News.
“The work that the New York Road Runners has done for causes large and small is nothing short of amazing, as we are proud to recognize the organization, from its founder the late Fred Lebow to the current leadership for all they do to help raise awareness and funds for literally thousands of people who never run a race,” Aanesen said. “Second but not least we are proud to honor the work that Dr. lee Jones and his team in Exercise Oncology have done at Memorial Sloan Kettering as they wrap up this critical stage of research and implementation. Without their vision, leadership and education the value of exercise as a vital part of cancer recovery may never have been realized.”
“It is an honor to accept this award on behalf of everyone past and present in at New York Road Runners,” said Rob Simmelkjaer, CEO. “The spirit and soul of one of our greatest champions, Grete Waitz, lives on in the terrific work Helle and AKTIV Against Cancer continue to do, and we are proud to be recognized amongst such an outstanding list of honorees past and present. Our work supporting the hundreds of causes tied to our events each year continues on, with a very bright future ahead.”
“This event has always been one of the highlights of our year, since the work we do ties directly to the goal and mission of AKTIV Against Cancer,” Dr. Jones added. “It has been a privilege to work so closely with Helle and the organization since we launched this project, and to see the tangible results of the work has been amazingly fulfilling, not just for our staff and volunteers but for the patients and their families and friends who are better in every way because of the discoveries we have made. It is a truly life changing effort.”
Since its inception in 2006, the TCS New York City Marathon Official Charity Partner Program has raised more than $460 million for over 1,000 worthy non-profit organizations across the globe.
Previous honorees of this award include: adidas and Chaunté Lowe (2022), Cycle For Survival co-founder Dave Linn (2021), Shannon Miller (2020) Chip and Joanna Gaines, Jeff Rochford and Aubrey Barr (2019) Dr. Jordan Metzl & Kikkan Randall (2018), The Rudin Family & the late Gabriel Grunewald (2017), Meb Keflezighi (2016), and Mary Wittenberg (2015).

Celebrating your Marathon Accomplishments
A passionate running enthusiast in Teaneck, Jennifer Heiner formerly served as a retail director for a New Jersey running company. She currently is an inside sales rep for a small company in North Jersey. Outside of the professional arena, Jennifer Heiner belongs to multiple running organizations including the New York Flyers, the New York Road Runners, and NYCRUNS. Welcoming runners of all skill levels and abilities, these organizations regularly sponsor programs and initiatives to help members in areas that range from marathon training to coached speed work.
Whether its training for a Half Marathon or a full 26.2, these groups often have in-person or virtual training programs to get you ready for your big race. Jennifer Heiner herself has run a half dozen marathons, and countless Half Marathons and shorter races. While you typically aim to run one of these distance races in favorable terrain (not too hilly) the best place to train for these events is with some degree of difficulty. Therefore, Jennifer Heiner’s favorite place to train for her distance races is none other than Central Park in Manhattan.
Fall Marathon season is here, and the biggest of them all is coming up this Sunday, November 5th: The New York City Marathon. New York Road Runners recently posted to their team on Strava, highlighting the importance of celebrating your accomplishments on training and on race day.
Celebrating Your Hard Work
Congrats to everyone who completed their 2023 Virtual TCS New York City Marathon! We have loved reading your stories in this group and cheering on your fellow runners. If you’re looking for more ways to keep the race week fun going, check out these 10 tips.     1) Celebrate with a delicious meal! Your body needs food to fuel after a hard effort. And nothing is more fun than sharing the excitement by having a meal with friends and family.     2) Write a list of things you’re proud you accomplished in your race! Even if you didn’t hit your main goal, keep a journal of all the fun that happened on race day.     3) Post about your race on this Strava TCS New York City Marathon page and in NYRR Virtual Racing Facebook group!     4) Go on a “liking spree”—take 15 minutes to “like” and give your fellow runners encouraging comments on Strava and Facebook about their workouts.   5) Remember to tune in to or come out to cheer on all the runners racing the TCS New York City Marathon in-person on November 5.    6) Treat yourself to some soft-tissue work. If you can’t get in to see a physical therapist or massage therapist, make time for your own mobility work. A little foam rolling goes a long way!     7) Rest days are the best days. Remember to take time in the weeks after your race to recover. Don’t feel you have to hop right back into the next goal.     8) Take a walk, do some yoga—anything gentle. Non-stressful movement will give your body and mind a chance to relax.     9) Remember to check your results on NYRR’s website. You can check your results here: https://results.nyrr.org/home    10) Get excited for your next virtual race! From November 18 to November 26 race the Virtual NYRR Run for Thanks 5K with us. More info here: https://www.nyrr.org/Races/VirtualNYRRRunforThanks5K    Good luck to everyone running in the virtual and in-person races this week!
