Visited New York over the weekend and Mark Burgess just happened to be playing a solo set at our favorite venue there. It’s been a very tough year for me in terms of mental health, plus being back in NY always brings about many emotions (plus The Chameleons are my all time most favs ever), so this gig pretty much shattered me. Like, full on sobbing during the breakdown in “Second Skin” and shit like that. But it was also one of those shows where absolutely nothing else mattered, just being in the moment and hearing those perfect, indestructible songs. Even with just Mark and The Chameleons’ current drummer standing in on second guitar, songs such as the one above still came across as urgent and ferocious as the full band version.
Anyway, great gig. I held the door for Mark when he was carrying his merch out to his van, and we gave him a download card for our music. He was incredibly pleasant and just emanated a great vibe. Plus, he was wearing a Rocky t-shirt which was just about the coolest thing ever. Made us happy to be returning to Philly the next day.
