I think one of most fascinating aspects of the watcher subscription service debacle is how it kinda broke open the floodgates for people to voice their frustrations with the content that Watcher produces.
Some of the most frequent and popular comments and posts I saw on the matter were about how
-Watcher does not make TV quality content
-No one is happy with the high production budget of these new shows
-Pretty much everyone has been supporting them this whole time just because they enjoy the chemistry that Shane and Ryan had on Unsolved
-All anyone was asking for was Shane and Ryan bantering behind a desk tbh
But the outrage generated by "we want to make more stuff that our fans don't like so please give us more money to do that" let people feel justification to say "hey we never actually liked any of the decisions watcher was making we just wanted to support the creators we liked, even though we don't happen to like what they're creating right now"
Wonder if this whole thing will change how they approach creating content in the future

now that watcher has taken back their decision, i wanna say one more thing about what happened: the backlash was a little ridiculous. Yes, you have the right to be disappointed that you can’t afford the streaming service. No, you can’t attack just Steven for something that was all of their decisions. Also, the fact of the matter is that the shows are really expensive to make. even the buzzfeed unsolved shows were expensive to make, but buzzfeed is a giant corporation and can afford that. watcher, a much smaller business, needs the money to keep making the shows that they make. grow up.

-poll incoming at the end of this ramble-
Instead of having a SuperWhoLock trifecta, the modern online loser has a clusterfuck of interest that are always one degree of separation away from forming one large, dorkish singularity of online entertainment. The significant pockets of the cluster fuck are as follows:
Dropout TV
Critical Role
The McElroys
Polygon
Watcher
The Try Guys
Smosh
Starkid
There are likely other pockets in the clusterfuck, as well as semantic arguments to be had over which pockets overlap too much to count as single entities, or arguments over which pockets shouldn’t count as entities at all. There are bound to be discrepancies seeing as I pulled all of this information out of my ass.
With this in mind, take a look at my handy dandy poll. If you choose one of the numbered options feel free to specify in the tags, and add anything you think I missed :]

i’ve seen so many people be like “i’ll keep watching but no more supporting them in any other way 😒” like y’know what. GOOD. fuck off. i’m gonna buy their merch and support their patreon/new streaming service because i understand what it means to make a fucking mistake.
watcher/the ghoul boys helped me grow up. i started watching ‘em at 16 and now i’m almost 24. they got me through college with their humor and creativity and it’s gonna take a hell of a lot more than a bunch of people who were only supporting them up until they made a mistake. jesus it’s like you guys expect them to produce ALL this stuff and then work for nothing, because as soooo many people have insisted, they will no longer financially supporting them in ANY way??? not to mention that holy SHIT did yalls racism and sexism pop out. tearing sara to shreds??? the VOLUMES of hatred steven got (don’t get me wrong he is no saint, finding out he’s friends with some homophobic & transphobic people is more than enough to give him some distasteful looks and rightful criticism, but could yall maybe NOT immediately jump to racism and insist ‘Shane was the only good one?’) this one weekend of a seemingly beloved company making a bad move, taking the time to listen to people and course-correct, and still being told that one mistake was enough to never fully trust them ever again or give them ANY of your support…
Do any of you people truly love anything but yourselves and your own fucked up sense of morality and justice?

Watcher fans are actually insufferable. I don’t care if you’re poor nobody is entitled to ANYONES art or work for free. It doesn’t matter if it was free in the past, you don’t have to buy it or support but that doesn’t mean they’re wrong for doing so. Were some of their comments tone deaf? 100% but that’s not an excuse to be wildly racist while putting your favourite white boy on a pedestal. Also stop acting like they’re these multiple billionaires the money they make also goes to their employees, rent utilities for their sets and office, to creating their videos etc. everyone saying they don’t want or care about higher production value good for you but have you ever considered that they care? That they want to grow and experiment as artists and creatives? Also stop trying to hold your “support” over their heads. Everytime you have supported them financially you got something out of it. You bought merch? Guess what you got merch. Bought their patron? You got exclusive or early access content. Watched an ad? You got an otherwise free video. Maybe these guys don’t want to have to be “sponsor friendly” and work with brands maybe they want to be able to make content based on what they want.
Tldr: y’all are racist and whiney so please shut up x

Tumblr users will so loudly hate Elon and scream to not support him (as they fucken SHOULD! Never support Musk or ANY of his companies or inventions) , but when their comfort rich ceo who runs Watcher, owns a fucking TELSA and thus supports Elon, suddenly they turn around and cry and moan that you're "mean" and "hateful" if you say those things alone are a fucking valid enough reason to hate him and say he's one of the rich who needs to be eaten lol. Go fucking figure. Practice what you preach. Do only your favorite comfort ceos get to support the nightmarish, genocidal transphobe that is Elon, or? Which is it?

YouTubers are milking out and having a goddamn field day with the Watcher situation (Shane, Steven and Ryan). 💀😭
I watch Buzzfeed Unsolved and Watcher eversince I got time from quarantine. SOME (not all) "commentary" channels doesn't even know them and didn't do an extensive research well about the people involve, the videos they produce and the company itself. It's kinda embarrassing for these YouTubers.
