One thing that baffled me about some people's reaction to a certain Star Wars movie was the idea that the writer/director had done this exciting new thing of saying that Force users came from everywhere. You didn't have to be from a particular family.

To me, that's roughly the same as saying "Oh, wow, what an exciting new take! This writer director says water is wet!"

Like, is there some large part of the Star Wars fandom that thinks that all Force Users ever were Skywalkers, or something? I know the Legends continuity got a little silly with dragging Skywalkers into everything, even in the future, but there are tons of "from nowhere" Force users in Legends. Oh, sure, there are also a few who we know had some ancestor who was a Jedi, but that seemed more of a nod to the idea that maybe there was a genetic component. Not so much the fantasy only certain bloodlines thing as Force use being a recessive trait.

It's just one of those things that contributes to my feeling like there's either an alternate good version of that movie out there somewhere, or an alternate reality in which the things it was riffing on actually existed in the source material. Not the flanderized pop culture idea of the material, but the material itself.

Because "oh, look, random kid has the Force" seems to me like exactly how it's always worked.

5. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

i don’t really Do angsty endings... possibly a blanket of stars just because i ended it on something of a cliffhanger and then completely zoned out of rnm for long enough that i forgot where i was going with it. there was definitely the intention of fixing things but then i just... did not do that. and now the show is on s3 and i’m over a season behind! life comes at you fast

6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

where the long shadows grow, because it reunited kirk prime and spock prime and they DESERVE TO BE HAPPYYYY. i’m a complete sucker for presumed dead/back from the dead stories, actually, so on a similar theme i have two (TWO) daredevil fics which follow the trope, one about ray coming back post-s2 (might never be normal again) and one about foggy and matt reuniting post-endgame (in the corner, taking up space). this is the only time i will ever acknowledge endgame ever again

7. Do you write crossovers? If so, what is the craziest one you’ve written?

i do write crossovers! in fact i am often roundly mocked by my friends for the increasingly esoteric nature of my crossovers. way back in secondary i wrote a twilight/labyrinth crossover where angela was sarah and jareth’s daughter  because i had a massive crush on a girl who liked both twilight and labyrinth. however, since that has been comprehensively scrubbed from the internet, i think my craziest crossover is probably part three of ‘traced upon the skies’, already an esoteric crossover of rivers of london and hot fuzz, when i added in a crossover with the horror movie ‘the ritual’ just because i wanted rafe spall’s character to be happy 

8. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

EXTREMELY rarely and only with extreme embarrassment. i will not be any more specific than that

9. Do you respond to comments, why or why not?

i used to really struggle with doing this, to the point that i had over 300 comments just. lingering in my inbox unanswered. so i decided to give those up and just commit to answering them from then on, which has been working fairly well for about a year and a half now. i love getting comments but i get overwhelmed really easily and struggle with replying in a way which feels meaningful without getting in my head about it! 

10. Have you ever received hate on a fic?

yes lmao it was for a harry potter fic on ff.net where harry got sorted into hufflepuff instead of gryffindor. it wasn’t a very good fic but i think the fact it was clearly written by an 11 year old should have scared off at least some of the less flattering comments.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

i don’t... think so? i don’t know how i’d find out to be honest, my vanity googling is rarely very effective

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

yes! as bronze may be much beautified (skyfall, mallory/bond) got translated into chinese, i was extremely pleased. i think it’s mandarin but the ao3 page for the translation doesn’t say and my mandarin is.................. extremely poor

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

also yes! me and jess little-smartass have written a lot together, although only our star trek/les mis series has been published, more’s the pity. we spent a lot of les mis fandom time workshopping aus and we were always extremely correct about all of it, imo

14. What’s your all time favourite ship to write for?

oh god. i think probably kirk/spock, although there’s some recency bias to that since i reread space manhattans recently and was reminded of my love for them. i really like writing jon/martin but i’ve mostly done that from outsider pov which is a bit different to writing shipfic, i think. joe/nicky from tog was also something i really liked writing but i struggle with plotting longer fic with them

15. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

i recently went through my abandoned fic folder so i actually have a few options for this. the obvious choice would be ‘any of the hockey ones’ but i did delete most of those just for my sanity. more recently i started writing a vaguely smutty pre-the thing mac/fuchs fic for alex @milkdrinker5000 which i really WANT to finish but am struggling with. most obscure answer (even beyond the thing) and most likely to remain unfinished is the insanely in depth post-tog booker/copley fic i had planned out back in about october. i wrote a good 6-7k of that one and then i realised it was going to be, like, difficult, and decided if i was going to put that much work into something it may as well be the novel im meant to be writing

16. What are your writing strengths?

once a friend told me i had an excellent facility for dialogue and ive thought about it every time i write ever since. i love writing dialogue and i think i’m good at knowing what sounds ic and what is right out. 

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

one of the things i struggled with for a really long time, and honestly still have trouble with, is depicting action in words. once i wrote a hockey fic which featured multiple hockey games and i spent probably four times as much effort editing those to make sense and be interesting that i’ve ever done on a talkier scene.

18. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

i’ve done it but only when i knew more or less what i was talking about - i did italian at school so i felt confident using it for nicky in something particular and real. i try not to italicise when i drop in words from other languages, which is what i usually do when i’m using a language i haven’t studied in depth (for example, joe’s use of arabic in some of my fic), and to only use words which i’ve heard used by native speakers in that context. i think if you don’t feel confident using another language, generally speaking, you shouldn’t do it. and for god’s sake don’t use google translate for a full sentence

19. What was the first fandom you wrote for?

20. What’s your favourite fic you’ve written?

this used to be an easy question because hands down the fic i was proudest of on posting it was i’ll be seeing you. i spent a year and a half on research and writing! but these days i do cringe a little at my hockey fic, and i think i’m prouder of some of my shorter works. let’s do a curveball and say layer on layer, down on down, which is my favourite of my rnm fics and the one i like most from a narrative voice perspective. getting michael right was stressful and i’m still proud i got it down for a TIME LOOP FIC, my absolute favourite trope

27,292 words, but that’s going to go up into the 30 thousands pretty quickly here once I finish editing the new chapter for Stimpacks!

3. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

Well, I only have two works so far (that will also be expanding soon)

4. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I always try to. I like having the author interact with the community and talking about the fic. To me, it’s a way to speak to my readers directly too. I like that sense of community.

5. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

Honestly, the only completed fic is December, 2288, and it has no angst at all. But that doesn’t mean that Stimpacks won’t have it. I have angst planned, but I have no idea if that will change in the future.

December, 2288. It’s just them dancing in celebration, and it’s fluffy with Feelings. Stimpacks will have happy in it, I just need to get there, haha.

7. Do you write crossovers? If so, what’s the craziest one you’ve written?

I don’t think the Mass Effect AU is a crossover, cause I’m only taking three people from the fallout universe and plunking them into Mass Effect, and their character changes due to the equipment and state of the galaxy instead of the state of the Wasteland. Honestly, I’m surprised how well they’re fitting into the universe! I’m excited to unveil it to everyone.

8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?

When I was still on ff.net, yes. But after the long hiatus and coming to a new fandom, I have not. Everyone really seems to like Em, and the pair of Em and Mac, so I’m very grateful to have a lovely community welcome me back to writing.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Alright, listen. I’m improving my smut game here. My improvement is through role-play. But! I also have a steamy shower scene that I need to really finish, and I have one still in my head that’s pretty smutty.

Em and Mac are horndogs, okay? Let them just have at it. Even if I can’t articulate what’s happening without blushing or giggling, just know they’re banging a lot. They’re in their twenties! And they’re in love.

Nope!

Nope. 

12. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

I have not. I don’t really count roleplay either yet until it’s posted (and it might, I’m not sure). So, as soon as you see a link, I have not co-written anything yet.

13. What’s your all-time favorite ship?

It’s Em and Mac. I have a couple of other ships sailing around somewhere, but this one has been carefully constructed, and they have the most depth out of all my ships. I think maybe because it’s a part of myself in Em? Or a good portion? Unsure.

14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

I had a Star Wars fic in the brainstorming stage with a few scenes written down, but I honestly doubt I’ll get to it anymore. It’s been so long. I also wrote for Pirates of the Caribbean, but due to some personal things, I don’t think I’ll ever finish that one either. 

15. What are your writing strengths?

I received some feedback on some decent descriptions, and how I’m spinning a few familiar scenes in a new way that is fresh, or capturing the tension of some quests. Personally, I think I’m okay with dialogue. Keep it realistic, using words I know characters will use too keep them in character. It’s nice. 

16. What are your writing weaknesses?

I am HORRIBLE at slow-burn. Even reading it. I’m constantly yelling “JUST KISS ALREADY” at my own characters even. So I’m hoping that Stimpacks will be better paced. Plus I have a couple of friends to help keep me in check if I don’t realize I’m moving too fast. 

Btw, Em and Mac, you gonna kiss yet? No? Sigh, fine.

17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I think it’s really cool, like having characters orignally from another country, or if they spoke it at home. Muttering things in their language under their breath is so great. Call me a dickhead again, it sounds great. Hahah.

18. What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Actually, I wrote fic for Red vs. Blue first. Then PoTC before the Big Hiatus.

19. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

So far its Stimpacks. The story sort of told itself to me while I played the game, refined it on a second playthrough, finished Em’s face on the third, and now I just fall in love over and over again with every new playthrough. Sure, there are a few departures from canon, but I hope everyone who reads it is having as much fun as I am as I write it.

I really don't like what's happening in Disney!Wars with the Force and bloodlines being so important. All the weird Force User nonsense, like Sabine turning out to be Force Sensitive...or Ahsoka pulling off with her what Master Useless tried to do with Theron...or however we're supposed to interpret that. The even weirder nonsense over on Bad Batch with clone genetics and Omega and all that.

I'm beginning to wonder if the reason Andor is so beloved is that its the only show that doesn't involve either Force Users or genetics.

Reaction to Julia

I have absolutely no idea what’s going on with fandom right now.  My Mac has decided that it doesn’t want to play nice with any apps or browsers despite my attempts to clear caches.  Meh.  We’ll see if it can hold steady for the two minutes I need to post this.

Adrian must’ve been hammered from the party if he didn’t know something was up with Deran.  I enjoyed the little eyeroll/sigh he gave when Deran huffed inside; wishing Deran would just use his words instead of leaving? I think he changed his tune once Deran started talking.  Deran is completely turned inside out by what’s happening and it doesn’t help that his partner knows just enough to be dangerous but not enough to understand how very, very bad this could be.  Not just in terms of doing time (I’m pretty sure Jack and his Crew wouldn’t be pleased to see Adrian) but for his overall health status (breathing vs. non-breathing).

Mirror Symbolism: How cool was the camera angle showing Adrian’s reaction to Deran’s words through the mirror?  It was not only aesthetically interesting but I’m pretty sure it’s supposed to mean something.  Here’s the little bit I know about the symbolism of mirrors but I would love to hear more theories.

Mirrors reflect light. They reflect the world around us. Spiritually, light can mean illumination, awareness, wisdom—mirrors reflect truth.  In psychology mirrors often symbolize the threshold between the conscious mind and the unconscious mind. Do any of these apply to Adrian in Season 4?

I first noticed the use of mirrors in Janine (S4, E1) when Adrian left the bed and stared at his reflection in the bathroom after lying to Deran about why he’s not doing well in competitions; I interpret this scene as the mirror reflecting Adrian’s lies, to Deran but not himself, and he doesn’t like what he sees.  Adrian again looks in the bathroom mirror during Know Thy Enemy (S4, E7) after Pope scares the shit out of him at the beach house. It feels like he’s searching for truth—does Deran want him to leave?  Does Deran’s family know what he’s done?  In Julia it’s not Adrian staring into the mirror—it’s Deran. This might be a stretch but I think Deran is seeking out his light, his truth, and that’s Adrian.  Remember when Pearce asked Adrian if he thought Deran would give up his life for him?  I think in this scene Deran has made his decision—yes, he would do anything to keep Adrian.  I wish we could’ve gotten more out of this scene instead of Deran stalking away without giving--or receiving--comfort.  

Shallow observation: When Adrian realizes that Deran’s not supposed to handle him in a fun way, he gives such a wide-eyed look that, in that moment, I was struck with his resemblance to a Precious Moments figurine. I think some of that is due to how his pupils bleed into his dark blue eyes giving him a doll-like appearance but he also has a knack for communicating naivety in his expressions.  Oh, and I would like to add that it was nice to see Adrian going barefoot at home.

Deran Visits Casa Craig

Renn hugging Deran again—that gives us more history about Renn than any words could.  Craig read Deran the riot act for not wanting to hold Baby Nick.  TBH, Deran looks extra rough at the moment so I’m not sure his declining to hold Nick was a bad move.  I wasn’t sure what to make of Craig’s response to Deran’s request for passports. He was preaching family first but Deran pulled the ‘please do it for me’ card and Deran is family.  This makes me think of Exit Strategy when Pope said he was always there for family; maybe Deran can count on his brothers to back his play?

The Drop

Up until this scene I wasn’t sure if Deran had requested one passport or two (I think my TV must have especially shitty sound, or he just has a low voice, but sometimes I can’t hear what Jake is saying) but I then it hit me:  Deran was definitely saying goodbye to his baby, The Drop.  

Craig & Baby Nick

Is there anything sweeter than a guy gone on his burrito baby?  These two are adorable.  And we got confirmation that Craig was getting passports and he wanted them to be a little worn and less shiny so at least he doesn’t want the guys to get caught.

Run!

Very fitting music in the that scene.  Frist Smurfette ran to Colin’s psycho brother and then Deran asked Craig to make sure everything’s okay at The Drop before he takes off.  When Craig wants to know how long Deran will be gone, like a week, Deran confirms just until Adrian is settled; if these two make it out I don’t foresee Deran thinking Adrian is settled. Ever.  They will be joined at the hip (or other body parts).

Frankie & J

This chick sure knows how to stroke the male ego.  I thought J was smarter than to fall for her lines.  Maybe he’s going to turn things back on Frankie?  J certainly doesn’t like women.

70’s Color Schemes & Not So Happily Ever Afters

Smurfette’s dream home had me giggling with the harvest gold and avocado greens.  Did I miss the burnt orange?  That was the trifecta of 70’s decorating.  Although I don’t remember mint fridges.  She always liked Oceanside!  Andrew after Colin’s favorite hockey player!  It’s too bad her one-true-love bled out in front of her. Could you picture Smurf acting crushed by the death of a loved one like Smurfette was back in the day?  No, me either.  

Pope & Angela

I liked the exchange between these two.  Angela: No do-overs.  Pope:  Why not?  Makes me hope Pope will give Adrian a do-over when the time comes.  Pope’s insistence on honesty is very interesting to me—is that also going to extend to Smurf?

Parting Thought

I politely requested tears, cuddling and sex.  I was denied all three in this ep.  Come on, writers—don’t fail me now!

One/Name: quinn. technically it is my given middle name, but when i first got on the internet as a teen i started using it as an alias, and now it is my real name and i have long since given up on any sort of internet vs real life divide!!

Two/Birthday: december 8th. also my dad’s birthday and the day john lennon died in 1980, if you were looking for some quinn trivia

Three/Zodiac: sag sun, virgo rising, aries moon. i try not to be obnoxious about astrology but in practice the virgo really dominates, so i always feel like i’m misrepresenting myself if i just say sagittarius!!

Four/Height: about 5′6″

Five/Hobbies: ummm what counts as a hobby!! i read a lot - less fiction now, but a lottt of music journalism. i spend a lot of time on skincare, so i think that counts. honestly my most consistent hobby is plunging deep into feelings about fictional men and/or boybanders, but that’s not really something you can whip out during an icebreaker activity is it

Six/Favorite colors: i used to always say blue, but i have gravitated very heavily towards a shade of light pink in the last couple years. i want to be surrounded by soft pink things and lights at all times! 

Seven/Favorite Books: mainstays on my list include Donna Tartt’s The Secret History, Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist, and Vonnegut’s Man Without A Country. newcomers include Emily St. John Mandel’s Station Eleven, Sebastian Barry’s Days Without End, Natasha Pulley’s The Bedlam Stacks, and Patti Smith’s Just Kids. as a very indecisive person who struggles with brevity, i don’t believe in single favourite things!!

Though, to be quite honest, in a universe where the Force binds everything together (and given how events play out in that universe), I sometimes think that actually anyone could be a Force user, it's just that it comes easier to some people.

Now, things like Theron Shan not being Force Sensitive would argue against that. On the other hand, this is a man who explodes Sith Lords while in his underwear. Maybe the real variable is how people connect with the Force (or the Force connects with them). Some people float rocks or throttle their subordinates long distance. Other people do strange things to probability without even knowing they're doing it.

Of course, if we assume that second category of people is "everyone who isn't actively a Force User," who succeeds in the unconscious probability manipulation really boils down to who the Force thinks is more valuable/useful/entertaining to keep around.

And I have simultaneously ended up arguing that Obi Wan was right and there is no such thing as luck and that the Force is Narrativium.

I should probably go to bed.
