i do think it is legitimately very funny whenever someone tries to make the claim that lavabending is inherently a very slow subbending and therefore not good in a fight. specifically when using that argument against Bolin's skill as a bender.
Sure, I feel like in very specific instances with Ghazan that could be a fair argument to make. It takes him a moment to destabilize the Ba Sing Se wall and for him to kick up enough lava to destroy the airbending temple. (to the point I would argue that if Bolin had been versed in lavabending like he was in s4 he would have swept the ground with Ghazan), but in moments where he's actually in a fight his lava is incredibly quick.
Just the lava frisbee on its own is an incredibly quick move

But making that argument with Bolin in particular is absolutely batshit when outside of lavabending he is an incredibly quick fighter. I would say it is one of, if not the, most defining things about his fighting style. He moves very, very quickly and uncharacteristically agile for a earthbender. This is a known thing. Like

I am not the first person to say this but no other earthbender does backflips like he does. And THEN with lavabending he is just as quick if not more so

Bolin since season 1 has had an uncanny knack for bending incredibly fast, and his lavabending is no exception to that rule. It's honestly something that haunts my brain all the time because how quick he is with it low-key breaks the balancing? a little?? Like earthbending was always shown to be very strong but in turn it was slower than other types of bending, but with Bolin that doesn't really seem to be a hangup he has.

Your body dysmorphia post has me Thinking.
Sephiroth and Genesis bodies are ultimately, very much for show.
Sephiroth is built for precision and agility, his blade and skillset meant for quick efficient culling of large groups of enemies or getting to weak spots on monsters. Like a scalpel. His muscles are mostly for his image, rather then from actual training. The mako makes sure he doesn't need as much physical mass for strength.
Genesis is similar. He's naturally slender, and his image is VERY much appearance focused. I mean hes a magic caster above all, so he's built for speed and dodging.
But Angeal? Angeal is all brute fucking force. That man is STRONG and built for it. You see wrestlers and professional strongman with his build, people meant to hit hard and move weight around. He's like an ox. He puts weight on differently then the other two, and he's a foodie! (Also there's probably something with growing up in relative poverty and then not being there anymore.)
And it is honestly inevitable that they're going to be compared. Their the three Firsts, they're seen together a LOT in pr events and such. And its even more inevitable Angeal is going to compare himself as well.
Angeal's phisyque is impressive and I don't doubt Genesis envies him for it sometimes. He's strong and puts on muscle easily, which I imagine is extremely valued in SOLDIER. I agree, the comparisons are inevitable and I could see it affecting all three of them (even Sephiroth, who could favor Gen and Angeal's more "human" looks over his own).
I beg you to forgive my mini rant under the cut. I fell down a rabbit hole, got keyboard-happy, and want to share my thoughts with you lol.
Assuming the east-Asian male beauty standards are the same in the FF7 world, Angeal is essentially friends with two of the most⏤if not the most⏤attractive men on the planet. He would have grown up seeing Sephiroth and Genesis receive praise and admiration for their looks and constantly being compared to them.
I’m not sure what influenced Angeal’s character design exactly, though we can say that Sephiroth and Genesis’ designs are in contrast to the Western ideals, Genesis more so because he was based off of Gackt (specifically Gackt in the 2000s), which means his design adheres to the east-asian male beauty standard. The two are so contrasting because the east-Asian male standards promote more androgynous and softer looks as opposed to the West’s fixation on hyper-masculinity.
I would say Sephiroth is a mix of both. While his design is inspired by Japanese historical figures and features that give him that “bishonen” appeal, his overall design is pretty masculine. He’s tall and muscular. His body, overall fits into the West’s standards while his face is ethereal enough for us to fit it into the east-Asian standards. Aspects that the West would consider effeminate such as the long hair actually used to indicate a warrior’s class. Funnily enough, long hair as a symbol of masculinity used to be a thing across many cultures, not just in Japan.
The thing about Angeal is, he is attractive. He fits the Western male beauty standard down to a T with traits such as being tall, having a muscular build, square jaw, and facial hair. But if indeed the FF7 world’s equivalent of male beauty is the same as Japan’s… Well, maybe getting compared to Sephiroth and Genesis gets to him.
Don’t get it wrong, the comments about his appearance are usually positive, but they’re always about how “strong and ripped and big” he is. Not to mention he constantly gets told how much older he looks than Sephiroth and Genesis despite being the same age as them.
He doesn’t feel attractive, he feels useful. He sees his body as a tool to get his job done. He has the body of a warrior, a Soldier. It’s built for fighting. The problem is, he’s constantly compared to his friends—the same friends who get compared to angels. They stand out, they’re pleasing to look at. He may be at an advantage with his brute force and ideal masculine physique, but—and I cannot stress this enough—men are not immune to body image issues and eating disorders.
I’ll admit that this headcanon partially stemmed from comments I’ve seen about Angeal’s appearance within the fandom. Some people think he’s ugly, which is fine, no one is forced to find anyone attractive. But I imagine the hurtful comments and the constant comparisons to his “more attractive” friends could hurt Angeal if he were to see them in his day to day life. He may be an enhanced super-soldier, but he's still human.
Again, please forgive the word vomit. I just have so many thoughts on this lol

Tifa Lockhart and her Fighting Style
I did say about wanting to do Tifa’s character analysis. Instead of focusing on her background or personality, I am a lot more interested with her fighting skill.
As someone who likes and is training martial art, I have my eyes on this kind of stuff. I’ve always wanted to know what kind of martial arts did the devs referred to when they were creating Tifa’s movement set. Were they from Aikido? Could be Capoeira? Or maybe Taekwondo? Some of her movement reminds me to Tony Jaa and Yuri Boyka.

The devs did say Tifa uses action-packed fighting moves, with simple control orders, similar like in the fighting games. So, they must be based on something in order to create realistic movement for her. Eg- Law (Tekken) his fighting style based on Drunken Master. Chun Li (Street Fighter) from Chinese Kenpo.
Let’s take a quick look on Tifa’s background. There was no firm record about her martial art background and all I got was just her being a student of Zangan. She learned Zangan-Ryu from him. Zangan was a resident of Nibelheim when the 'Nibelheim incident' occur. He found Tifa at the Mako Reactor and took her to a safer place. Knowing Tifa was badly injured, Zangan then brought Tifa to Midgar for further medical care. After some time, Zangan left Tifa to settle his thing. (in OG) He left a note on Tifa's piano after Nibelheim got reconstructed.

I watched Last Order again to reconfirm something. In that short OVA, Zangan and Tifa already knew each other. In which I quickly assume that Tifa was already his student.
Lets say, Tifa became Zangan's student at the age of 13 yrs old. The Nibelheim incident took place when Tifa was 15y/o. So, there were 2 yrs for Tifa to master the basic martial art movements. And Zangan took her under his wing at Midgar for probably a year or so before he left her alone.
Now, back to her fighting style. Previously, I thought Tifa's style was based on Muay Thai. And in second thought, perhaps it was Taekwondo, but Tifa (Remake, AC) uses her fist a lot, so Taekwondo is not her main style. Besides, Tifa is more to an ‘attacker’ type of fighter instead of “defender’.

I got super excited when I found the similarities in Tifa’s skill and the real-life fighter. I was like, “Look at my Tifa!! She’s pretty and strong. Pretty strong”. There are still some more but it’s hard to get a proper shot for Tifa’s movement. She has incredible speed.
As a conclusion, I would say that Tifa’s combat is Mixed Martial Art, with her dominant skills will be 1. Kickboxing | 2. Taekwondo | 3. Gymnastic | 4. Muay Thai. I’m glad the devs added Gymnastic to her fighting set, it gives an elegant movement to her instead of only violence
On to her background. These fighting skills take MANY-MANY-MANY YEARS to learn and yet Tifa manages to become a master of these in just a few years. Can you tell how awesome Tifa is? Unlike Cloud who got trained in military service, and his strength was enhanced with Mako infusion + Jenova Cell, Barret has a huge gun arm and Aerith being the last creature of her kind has magical abilities, Tifa on the other hand, she, as a normal people, has to work extra hard to gain these amazing skills. Even with these superior techniques, Tifa still remain calm, soft, and shy to everyone around her. This is something that I really admire about Tifa. 
Well ofc, 20y/o anime character is equivalent to 30y/o experienced fighter. 3 months training is similar to 3 years training. But we’re talking about fictional character here, not a real life person. So, it is understandable. 
I would have to say this, but training martial arts is not popular among girls. I’m a trainee, and I only have 1 ACTIVE FEMALE FRIEND (my only sparring buddy) in our big team. Girls dont like sweat or train their muscles. They love the title of ‘a student of martial art’ but they dont love the hard training. Tifa was one of a hundred girls that was ready to go through hell and yet still able to remain soft.
I have a theory (or more like a fandom) on why Tifa decided to learn Martial Arts. Remember the Vow under the star? Tifa asked Cloud to save her if she was in trouble, she asked her to be her ‘Hero’.

Right after Cloud left the village, Tifa probably became interested to learn some fighting skills. And then, there was Zangan in her hometown. Kinda like, “Cloud will become really strong after this and I want to be strong too”. And the reason she wanted to be strong perhaps she wanted to impress Cloud by the time they meet again.

Devs said Tifa wants a ‘Hero’ to save her, but they never mentioned about Tifa wanting to be a ‘Heroine’ (although in the FF7R, she’s the heroine). Even in Crisis Core, Tifa said it was every girl’s dream of having a ‘hero’ to save them. She never talked about heroine. Perhaps, being a heroine was never in her thought.
I would like to think that Tifa not only wants a Hero to save her, but she also wants to be someone her Hero can rely on. She doesnt want to be the ‘princess’ that stays behind the hero, rather she wants to be an ‘equal partner’ her hero can trust. As if her priority is to make sure the Hero is well covered, both emotionally and physically. And the hero she’s looking forward to...is Cloud Strife

And that was why she worked through hell so that she could stand RIGHT NEXT to her Hero, become the HERO’S SHIELD, support his back and more importantly, able to catch the hero before he fall down.
The more I learn about Tifa, the deeper my love goes for her.

Season 1, ep 6,p1
-The Next Day-
You were humming happily, brushing Neo's fur as he groaned happily."Feels good huh, Neo?" You laugh as he looked at you and flopped onto his back, exposing his belly for you to brush. "Ha! Okay, point taken." Suddenly your radio playing music turned into something unexpected. "Good morning, citizens of Republic City. This is Amon. I hope you all enjoyed last night's pro-bending match because it will be the last.' You turned to the radio, your body frozen in fear as the man continued to talk.
"It's time for this city to stop worshiping bending athletes as if they were heroes. I am calling on the council to shut down the bending arena and cancel the finals or else there will be severe consequences." With that ominous message, the radio went dead. You jumped when Neo nudged your arm in concern. Sighing shakily, you smiled even though it didn't reach your (e/c) eyes. "I'm okay, but how do you feel about taking a swim?"
*At City Hall*
You walked in with your Uncle Tenzin and immediately took your seats, Tenzin placing a hand on your shoulder in comfort. "Here we go." You whispered.
*20 minutes later*
The door made a loud bang sound as the Avatar and your teammates walked in. Your Uncle stood up, addressing her. "Korra, you shouldn't be here! This is a closed meeting." "As the Avatar and a pro-bending player, I have a right to be heard. You can't cancel the finals." she stated, walking closer. "I know winning the championship means a lot to you, but as far as I'm concerned, we need to shut the arena down." the Airbending master stood his ground.
"What about the rest of you?" demanded the Avatar. "Tarrlok, surely there's no way your backing down from Amon, are you?" "Actually, Tenzin and I agree for once." "The council is unanimous--we're closing the arena." "No!" Mako cried. "You can't!" agreed Bolin. "(Y/N), what about you? Out of everyone here, pro-bending means the most to you." Korra tried desperately. You looked at her, with a mix of emotions. "Yes, but it'd be selfish of me to want the arena open for my own needs. Part of our job is to protect the innocent, Korra." She turned to Tarrlok, confusion clear in her face.
"I thought you of all people would take a stand against Amon." He glanced at you quickly before turning his attention to the blue eyed girl in front of you. "While I am committed to bringing that lunatic to justice, I will not put innocent lives in danger at stake just so you and your friends can play a game." At that point, Mako had enough. "Pro-bending might only be a game to you, but think of what it means to the city. Right now, the arena is the one place where benders and non-benders can gather in once place to watch benders--" "Beat each other up..in peace! It's an inspiration to everyone!" You couldn't help but laugh at the Earthbender.
"I appreciate your naive idealism, but you're ignoring the reality of the situation." Tarrlok replied coolly. "The reality is: if you close the arena, you let Amon win!" Korra tried once more. "I'm sorry, but the decision has been made. This meeting is adjourned." Before he could bang the hammer, a wire came out of no where and snapped the wooden hammer in half. Everyone watched mesmerized as Lin pulled it back to her suit.
She raised an eyebrow before speaking. "I can't believe I'm saying this, but I agree with the Avatar." "You do?" "You do?" "Yeah, you do?" You, Tarrlok and Korra wondered. "I expected this kind of cut and run response from Tenzin, but the rest of you?" You cough to cover your laugh at Lin's jab at your Uncle. "Come on, show a little more backbone. It's time the benders of this city displayed some strength and unity against these equalists." Her green eyes peered at you in particular.
"We must prevent the conflict between benders and non-benders from escalating to into an all-war! The council is not changing its position, Lin." "Now just a moment, Tenzin. Let us hear what our esteemed Chief of Police has in mind." Your Uncle tossed his hands up, as Lin began to talk. "If you keep the arena open, my metal benders and I will provide extra security during the championship match." "As will I." Everyone turned to you in shock.
"But (Y/N)--" Mako started as you held up a hand. "Right now, the lives of the benders are more important than a championship. Korra will take my place, and I will be in the crowd to jump in if needed." Lin looked at you with a hint of pride, and while Tenzin felt pride for you as well, the fear of you being hurt was stronger. "There's no one better to deal with Chi-blockers. Our armor is impervious to their attacks."
"Are you saying that you will be personally responsibility for the safety of the spectators in the arena?" Tarrlok sneered. "I guarantee it." Your Aunt said firmly. "It is hard to argue with Chief Beifong's track record. If she and (Y/N) are confident her elite officers can protect the arena, then she has my vote. I am changing my vote--who is with me?" The Earth, Fire and Southern Water Tribe representatives raised their hands and Tenzin knew he was defeated.
"The arena stays open. Good luck in the finals." Your teammates cheered, while you sent them a weary smile. "And good luck to you, Chief Beifong and (Y/N)." With that you waked off, your hair swishing behind you. Your teammates, Aunt and Uncle watched as you left. Korra turned to the woman next to her. "Thank you--" "I didn't do it just for you. I also did it for (Y/N), he's been different for a while, and I think this will help him."
"A word, please, Lin." The woman followed out of ear shot, but was unaware of you meditating in the rafters. "Tarrlok is playing you, and I don't want to see you (Y/N) get hurt." "I know what I'm doing, and the risks that come with it. As for (Y/N), he's stronger than you give him credit for, he's not that same child he once was." "In that case, I'm going to be by your sides during the match."
You peeked an eye at his figure, waiting for his response, "It's for (Y/N) and Korra. I want to make sure they're safe." "Do what you want. It's not like I've ever been able to stop you before." With that she stalked off, ignoring Korra as she tried to approach the woman. Korra turned to your Uncle with an annoyed look. "What is her problem? Even when she's on my side, she's against me." "I've known Lin since we were children; she's always been challenging."
"What did your father do to make her hate the Avatar so much?" "My father and Lin got along famously...I'm afraid her issues are with me." Korra seemed to have a light bulb moment. "Wait a second, it all makes sense. You and Beifong, Beifong and you....you two were a couple!" You sputtered a laugh, as your uncle replied. "What? How...where'd you get that idea?" "Ha! Your wife." Korra smirked as your Uncle muttered.
"Criminy! I'll have to have a word with her.." "So, Pema stole you from Beifong? I'm surprised our 'esteemed Chief of Police' didn't throw her in jail." Korra mused, looking at Tenzin as he looked back wistfully. "Oh she tried. Anyway, Pema didn't steal me. Lin and I had been growing apart for some time; we both had different goals in life--why am I telling you this?" he sputtered.
Your curious (e/c) eyes glowed slightly in the dark from your hiding spot, as you watched their interaction. "It all happened a long time ago, and we've moved past it." "Apparently Beifong hasn't." Your Uncle clenched his fists. "What do you...? Of course she has. Anyway, this isn't any of your business." He began storming away and Korra could't resist calling out, "See you at home, Mister Heartbreaker!" she laughed, before yelping as you appeared out of nowhere.
"Gah! We should put a bell around your neck, (Y/N)." You chuckle at her. "Sorry, Korra, but you should be more aware of your surroundings. And that is what we're going to work on when we're waterbending." You started to walk away with your hands clapsed behind your back when Korra wondered, "(Y/N), how come you train with the airbenders and I when you're a waterbender?" 'Finally.' You turned towards the girl with a giant smirk on your face. "Well, now you're asking the right questions, Korra. But I'm hungry! Let's go find something to eat! Your treat!"
Your laughter echoed in the halls as Korra chased after you, demanding an answer.
*The next morning*
You opened your eyes to see your Aunt Pema holding a plate of food in offering in front of you. Her green eyes sparkled with motherly concern and love. "Be safe tonight, (Y/N)." She said, sitting next to you before you fell in peaceful silence.
*That night*
You pulled your hair into a high ponytail, similar to Korra's hairstyle, before tightening your armor Aunt Lin gave you for your 18th birthday. "All clear, Chief. " an officer called to her, her intimidating presence powering over yours. She made hand signals before turning her attention to the approaching Airbender behind you. "How is the security sweep going?" "Fine." the Earthbender said dryly."They checked under the stands?"
"Yes, Uncle." "And you have enough officers to cover all points of entry?" With a irritated sigh, she turned to him. "I have the skies, the bay, and every nook and cranny of this place covered. Now leave me alone and let me do my job." You rolled your eyes, and walked away from the bickering adults in search of your tiny companion. "Nevermore! Where are yo--"  Suddenly the (f/c) dragon appeared with a bone in her mouth.
"Ah! Nevermore what is in your mouth?" You yelped, trying to take it out of her mouth. It was comical: you the oh so stotic (Y/N) fighting with a baby dragon. She thought it was a game of tug a war and you were sorely losing. A soft giggle in the corner caught your attention and you looked towards a grinning Asami as she came out of the corner.
"Relax (Y/N), it's a vegan chicken bone. I know how you feel about how much meat she eats." You smiled in relief that your pet hadn't take an actual bone from somewhere else. "Heh, thanks Asami." She then pursed her lips and studied you for a moment while you were chanting silently in your head for her not to say anything about your almost full on confession.
"So, (Y/N) about what you said the other day,--" "What do you mean? I say a lot of stuff the other days." You tilted your head, making you look like a polar bear pup. Nevermore looked at you with a look that screamed, "Tell her the TRUTH," You turned away from the girl, with a hand cupping your ear, "Huh, what's that Aunt Lin? You need to talk to me?" You turned to the unimpressed girl with a grin. "Sorry, Asami; They're calling me, so I gotta--bye!" You left as quick as your feet carried you away.
The dragon looked at Asami who looked at her and they both laughed at your silliness when really Asami wanted to talk to you.
*20 minutes later*
"The anticipation is palpable as we are just moments away from the championship match. Will the Wolfbats' ferocity help them repeat as champs or will the under dog Fire Ferrets serve up a surprising bowl of smack down soup?" You scoff next to your Aunt and Uncle who looked at you curiously, "It isn't a surprise if he says it." You said sassily making them chuckle at you.
"Introducing the challengers, the Future Industries Fire Ferrets!" The crowd went wild as Bolin started doing some silly poses. "Oh it seems the Avatar is filling in for (Y/N) today! But where is the young Councilman?" wondered the MC as your fans began booing and calling for you. Lin smirked and elbowed you from where you crossed your arms. "Seems like someone's got himself a fan club."
Even though you were part Bumi, you were also part Lotus. She was a shy and reserved thing. That's a part of her personality that you got as well. You chuckled bashfully. "Nah, they just like having me for bets." You looked closer at the Ferrets, noting Korra was rolling her eyes at Mako. Nevermore chirped from your shoulder, and you snicker.
"You said it, girl." Pabu started chirping from the ring making Nevermore fly up and breath fire onto Bolin's Earth disk making the crowd cheer in wonder. "And their opponents! The WHite Falls Wolf Bats!" Said team started howling and cheering while you rolled your eyes at their dramatic entrance.
You held your arm out for the baby dragon to land on like a hawk. "Isn't the leader of the Wolf Bats your ex?" Tenzin asked while Lin sent him the stink eye. "Yes Uncle he is. Jerk." You sniffed in disdain. "The champs and challengers face off at the starting line and here we go!" Your left eye twitched as your ex tried to get Korra with some dirty trick.  "Tahno tries to clean the Avatar's clock with some dirty water-boxing. Ming shakes off Mako's attack and returns the favor."
Mako and Korra were both knocked into second and Bolin was soon knocked back after making you wince. "Ahh, maybe I should've made Korra be on guard duty." You face palmed at the girl as your aunt laughed slightly at your misery.
Nevermore chirped from where she was perched on your shoulder, making you bark a laugh.
"Hush Nevermore or no meat for you for a week."
You got a nip on the ear for that.
"Ow!"

Korrasami
3. Describe their relationship dynamic.
The big, strong avatar is soft as hell for her girlfriend and everybody knows it. Korra is certainly not above using her unique abilities and privileges to make her girlfriend smile. Bending Asami a new necklace out of meteorites? Naturally. Taking Asami for flights around the city on her glider? Of course. She once even convinced Fire Lord Izumi to let her reserve the entirety of Ember Island for a romantic getaway.  
Although she doesn’t make as many grand gestures as Korra, Asami is also a very caring and supportive girlfriend. She will spar with Korra and allow her to vent when her avatar duties are weighing on her. When Korra is sitting outside, meditating into the spirit world, Asami brings blankets or sweaters to make sure her physical body doesn’t catch a chill. She also takes great pride in doing her girlfriend’s hair and makeup before formal events. 
4. What was their relationship like before they got together?
After the got to know each other, they developed a really strong friendship. Even when all the Mako bullshit was going on, they never saw each other as love rivals or let it come between them. From driving lessons to sparring sessions to trying new restaurants in Republic City together, they were sort of inseparable. It wasn’t much of a surprise to anyone when they got together. 
9. What made them realize they were in love?
For both of them, it was the time they spent apart after the whole Zaheer saga. Because they had become so close, Asami deeply felt Korra’s absence in the three years she spent back in the Southern Water Tribe. While she was recovering, Korra felt the most herself when she was writing to Asami, and reading letters from her motivated Korra to keep trying to regain her strength. 
Baavira
3. Describe their relationship dynamic.
These two certainly aren’t the type to go all in with public displays of affection, but behind closed doors the relationship is quite affectionate. Baatar can be pretty romantic at times. He once arranged a picnic lunch for them in the crystal catacombs of old Ba Sing Se. Kuvira will usually say that things like that are a waste of time, but she secretly enjoys the romantic gestures a lot. Kuvira is also kind of Baatar’s biggest fan. All over the Earth Empire Kingdom, she’ll point out buildings and rail stations and power plants to people and be like, “You see that? My brilliant fiance built that.” She’s too much lol. 
4. What was their relationship like before they got together? 
Kuvira and Baatar were childhood friends, if only because of their closeness in age and physical proximity. It’s funny because they were both pretty picky when it came to choosing companions (read as they actively disliked most people), but each of them never seemed to mind the other. Kuvira was always the first person Baatar wanted to tell when he came up with a new invention, and Kuvira would show Baatar every new bending form and dance routine she learned from Su. 
When Kuvira was around fourteen, she joined the Zaofu guard. At around the same time, Baatar started assisting his father in a more professional capacity and they didn’t have time to see each other quite as often. They rekindled the friendship when they got a little older, and Baatar saw Kuvira’s apartment—which wasn’t in the central pod of Zaofu—as an oasis away from his family. 
9. What made them realize they were in love?
Baatar has been in love with Kuvira since they were kids. Growing up as a nonbender in a city like Zaofu and within a family like the Beifongs, he often felt pretty invisible. But when he was with Kuvira, she always made him feel seen without really thinking about it. She was the only one who called him by his name when they were young. One day when they were like 11 and 12, he asked her why she didn’t call him Junior like everyone else. In response she just shrugged and was like, “When do I ever speak to your father? You’re Baatar. He’s Baatar Sr. It’s just easier that way.” For Kuvira this was just a practical thing, but it made him love her and he never stopped.  
For Kuvira, the feelings developed a bit later, when they were teenagers. She had always had a temper, and while most other people just wrote her off as wild or troubled, Baatar always took the time to try and understand why she was upset. He was always pretty good at calming her down, and she felt content and at ease in his presence. It wasn’t until he left to study at the university in Ba Sing Se—and she felt his absence deeply—that she even registered the feelings as potentially romantic. Opal actually teased her about it once, asking if she was just going to stand around and pout until Junior came home.

You know, I feel like the FFVII fandom has sort of a bad habit of like... woobiefying? Baby-fying? Cloud. Like, okay.
Things Cloud is:
- An extremely strong person. The kind of inner strength he has is like... almost unfathomable. All the shit he went through, and he still pulled through at the end of the day, finding a family with his friends and accepting himself, flaws and all.
- Stubborn. Even after getting stabbed through with the Masamune by Sephiroth himself, Cloud, as a lowly grunt, threw the legendary General into a vat of Mako. No super strength, nothing. That boy was fueled purely by anger and determination.
- Guarded. His whole childhood, Cloud was an outcast. He was blamed for Tifa’s coma. Nobody else would play with him. His hero that he idolized destroyed almost everything he cared about. He was experimented on, his best friend was shot dead protecting him, Aerith was killed in front of his eyes, etc. This kid’s been very traumatized. It’s understandable why during the first third of the game, Cloud is pulling away from all attempts of friendship extended towards him. It’s only during the later parts of the game he calls the AVALANCHE crew his friends. He’s not going to be opening up to strangers anytime soon.
-Kind. Especially to the people he cares about.
- Competant. I can see arguments for making Cloud fairly incompetent during his Cadet days, but I’m talking about fics where Cadet Cloud is a bumbling idiot. I just... can’t see that happening.
- Done with Sephiroth’s shit. In spite of what the fanfics will say, post-OG, it would be On Sight.
- Quiet, but assertive. Especially post-canon. After all the trauma and bullshit Cloud’s been put through by forces outside his control, he’s not going to take anybody’s shit. Least of all Sephiroth’s or Rufus Shinra’s.
- Country dumb. He’s actually really intelligent but like, “Let’s Mosey”, “Crispy Critters”, etc. Also not very good with social situations.
-Physically Strong. That goes for the whole AVALANCHE cast as well. I mean, if you’re trying to be fairly realistic, it’s understandable why you might not want, say, Barret to have Catastrophe in your fic. But if the fic takes place post-canon, in the world of FF7, then AVALANCHE should technically be able to take on just about anything after the Ruby Weapon. Just like... don’t make them wimps. Stop making them wimps. Please.
-Pretty. Yes, Cloud is pretty. He is a Square Enix protagonist after all. Perhaps one of the prettiest. He can also beat the shit out of you.
Things Cloud Strife is not:
- Rude or unnecessarily mean (excepting the parts of the original game where he wasn’t entirely himself). This isn’t so much a problem with woobiefying him, just a characterization I sadly see a lot. Now I’m talking about those fics where like, Cloud is asshole and drives all his friends away. It’s not him. He wouldn’t suddenly be an ass to Tifa for no reason, or exclude her from his life.
-Uber Submissive. He’s got pride just like everybody else. Maybe even more than most people.
- Super emotional. We know that Cloud is the kind of person who hides his true feelings. It’s like a core character trait.
- An UwU baby. Does he admire Zack and Sephiroth as a Cadet? Absolutely. Does he also have bad life experiences with others and work for the military? Yes. He’s young and wide-eyed, but he’s no inexperienced child who needs to be coddled.
These are just things I tend to see in fics a lot. It’s not Cloud I’m reading about, it’s a stand-in. I suppose that’s what most fanfiction is about, though. Feel free to add the list, if you like. I just kind of wish we could all take a step back and look at the characters themselves.
I’m not sure if it’s just a me thing, because Cloud, and FF7 as a whole, are both so important to me, but I’m just tired of seeing Cloud mischaracterized and reduced to so little of what he eventually became in canon. Idk, am I overreacting? Anyway, please add your thoughts on the matter, I would be interested in hearing what other members of the community think.

This is part of a story that I'm writing, but it's going to be a long ass time before I can get the full thing posted on here, so I thought I'd put a tease of a fight scene out. (Due to this being a dream of one of the characters, certain people are TOTALLY NOT acting like they should be.) Also a number of trigger warnings. Character death, mention of torture, violence, slightly graphic violence (we're gonna call this R rated peeps)
Also imo I suck at fight scenes, but hey read at your own risk!

Genesis opened his eyes to find himself in a large, well lit room. His azure eyes scanned around and noted Hojo standing in front of several people talking to them. 
'That's not right, Hojo's dead...' he thought to himself.
He then realized who he was talking to. It was his two best friends Angeal and Sephiroth, along with Zack. Although there were others Genesis didn't know, but they all had silver hair just like Sephiroth. Perhaps they were related to him in some way...
'No that's not possible, Sephiroth has no family relations. He's all alone.' Genesis told himself.
Hojo turned around and noticed Genesis.
"Well, well, Rhapsodos. It's so nice of you to join us. We all were waiting for you, weren't we, gentlemen?" Hojo sneered at him.
"Angeal, Sephiroth, Zack...why are you working with him?" Genesis asked, greatly confused.
Hojo laughed a high, annoying, nasally laugh.
"They've told me that they are tired of your constant complaining, and I told them that I could help stop that. By the way what do you think of my newest creations?" Hojo asked, waving his hand at the three silver haired boys.
Genesis looked over at them. The youngest looked at him and flicked some hair out from in front of his eyes.
"Names Kadaj." he said flatly, then looked away, obviously bored.
The second oldest turned around from playing with something and flicked shoulder-blade length silver hair over his black clad shoulder.
"Yazoo." he purred silkily.
The oldest and most burly looked up from sitting on the floor and chuckled deeply.
"Loz." was all he said.
Hojo cackled madly.
"Very good. You see Rhapsodos, to come up with these creations of mine, I had to do a lot of work. Genetically modifying cells to match and become compatible with a certain others. For you see, these creations are clones of Sephiroth!" he said triumphantly, madness glittering in his eyes.
A shocked look firmly settled itself into place on Genesis' face as he looked over at Sephiroth.
"Sephiroth, why did you let him do that to you? I know for a fact you would never willingly allow that to happen. Did he drug you to coerce you into allowing him to do it?" Genesis asked, appalled at what he had just heard.
"No drugs, Genesis..." Sephiroth replied, "...I've always wanted a sparring partner that could challenge me. And while you and Angeal do push me slightly, it's not enough. So Hojo told me that he could create a sparring partner that would keep me working if I helped him. And low and behold, he delivers three sparring partners that can keep me busy when we spar."
Hurt crossed Genesis' face as he heard those words.
"Poor Rhapsodos. No longer needed. But wait! She might need you..." Hojo cackled, gesturing over to where Yazoo was standing.
The young teen looked over his shoulder then stepped to the side, revealing someone chained up, hanging against the wall. Taking a better look at the person, he realized who it was.
"Ami!" he yelled, then rounded on back on Hojo, "Why do you have her chained up like that?"
Yazoo laughed and Genesis' attention was drawn back to him and Amaterasu. Taking better notice of Amaterasu's state, he realized her clothes were shredded and barely hanging on her body. She was also riddled with cuts and horrible bruises. They had obviously been torturing her. Her usual bright auburn hair was dark with the blood that saturated it.
Yazoo moved back over to Amaterasu and lifted her head so Genesis could see her face and he noted that not even that had been spared from the beatings. Then with sadistic pleasure on his face, Yazoo wrenched Amaterasu's head towards him and crashed his lips hard against hers in a brutal kiss. Amaterasu didn't fight against him, didn't move at all, as if she had given up on getting away. Yazoo pulled away from Amaterasu with satisfaction plastered on his face. Sephiroth looked up from his place a little ways away and smiled.
"Excellent Yazoo. She's not fighting back anymore. You've finally broken her spirit. Very impressive." he laughed.
Yazoo smiled and threw a "thank you" in his direction. Hot rage coursed through Genesis' veins and he called Rapier to his hand and flew forward at all of them. Suddenly, there was a loud crack, and Genesis stopped in his tracks, a bullet hole where his next footstep would have been. Genesis studied the bullet in the ground for a second then looked up to see where it had come from. He noticed the one named Yazoo with a gun in his hand.
Yazoo waved the gun back and forth in the air carelessly for a moment, teasing Genesis. Then he lowered the gun to the side of Amaterasu's head.
"Now if I were you, Rhapsodos, I wouldn't come any closer, or I'll blow her brains out all over the wall." he threatened.
Genesis held his ground and glared at Yazoo. Everyone else laughed at him. Zack then decided to come forward and fight him.
"If you can beat me, You will be one step closer to saving Amaterasu. Although it's not like you''re going to make it." he said, raising the training sword all SOLDIERs were given when they joined, in a threatening manner.
"I don't want to fight you, Zack. We don't need to fight." Genesis replied.
Zack laughed, "Oh yes we do!"

He then charged at Genesis his sword held high, and brought it down in a overhead strike. Genesis brought up Rapier to block it, then kicked Zack in the stomach, sending him flying backwards. Genesis perused him, but Zack was back up onto his feet in seconds and met Genesis' strike and tried to sweep Genesis' feet out from under him by dropping to the ground and swiping his leg towards Genesis' feet. Genesis saw what he was doing and jumped over his leg and landed. Zack used the momentum to spin himself back up so he was standing again.
He brought his sword up in the air in a lower slash and Genesis leaned backwards to avoid it and charged a fireball in his hand. Releasing it, the fireball engulfed Zack's hand and he quickly dropped his sword with a loud cry. Genesis saw his opening and even though he didn't want to do it, he knew he had to. Genesis lunged forward and slashed his sword, and a large gash appeared in Zack's throat. Zack's eyes grew wide as the burn on his hand was forgotten and his hands rose to his throat.
He tried in vain to stem the bleeding, but it was no use and he quickly bled out, the life leaving his eyes as his body bonelessly hit the ground. Genesis slowly walked to him and kneeled down. He ran his hand over Zack's face, gently closing his wide open eyes before picking the boy up and walking him over to the wall far away from the others. Gently propping him up against the wall, Genesis ruffled his black spikes softly.
"Sorry, pup..." he whispered softly, "...I didn't want to do it, but you left me little choice, I have to save Amaterasu..."
Sea foam green swirls began to surround Zack's body.
"May the Goddess keep you safe pup..." Genesis whispered softly.
He watched Zack's body disappear and noticed a single tear run down the boys cheek just before he fully disappeared. The hand not holding Rapier clenched into a fist. That boy still had so much more to live for, so much more of a life to live. And he had been forced to cut it short. Genesis stood and turned back to the others.
Angeal stood and gave a large stretch, before reaching over beside him and picking up the large and heavy Buster sword. Propping it on his shoulder, he walked out in front of the others and raised his hand palm up then made a "come here" sign with two of his finger. That has always been the motion that he and Genesis had used to mark the start of their fights. However Genesis did not return the gesture and charge toward him. He simply shook his head and lowered Rapier, showing he wasn't going to fight him.
Angeal made a annoyed noise, then chuckled darkly, "Fine, if you won't come for me, then I'll come for you."

He shot forward, surprisingly fast and agile for a man of his size and stature as well as the weapon he carried with him. Once Angeal reached Genesis, he brought the Buster sword up over his head, like it weighed no more than a feather, and brought it down hard. Not wanting to face the brute force and power behind that attack, Genesis dodged to the side, quickly dancing out of the way of the heavy blade.
"Angeal, stop this. I don't want to fight you. I need your help to get Ami out of here. Hojo has poisoned Sephiroth's mind. I know I killed the puppy, and I'm sorry about that. But he gave me no choice. Hojo must have poisoned his mind too..." Genesis dove onto the ground and rolled to the left then back up onto his feet.
"Zackery doesn't matter to me. If he was a true SOLDIER, he would have been able to hold his own against you. He was 1st class material, he just hadn't been promoted or gotten the Mako yet. He's better off dead." Angeal growled, making another slash at Genesis.
This one Genesis blocked. It was one thing to say that a SOLDIER was weak or inexperienced. But to say they were better off dead because of that inexperience was unacceptable. This was not his friend Angeal, and Genesis knew that now. He no longer had any qualms about fighting him.
Pulling Rapier back, he lashed it forward with as much power as he could. Angeal was not expecting the strength of the retaliation and was momentarily stunned. After stumbling back a couple of steps, he grinned and lept back into the battle. He swung the Buster sword at Genesis' stomach, and Genesis launched himself into the air, landed with his hand firmly on the Buster sword, then launched himself even higher. As he came down, Genesis swung Rapier in a two handed strike and Angeal's head was cut cleanly from his shoulders.
Genesis landed in a crouch on the ground and not a second later, Angeal's head landed behind him. Genesis turned and looked at the head.
"You always spoke of honor, dreams, and pride Angeal. It was Zack's dream to become a 1st like his mentor, like you. And you always spoke of him with such pride because he was your best student. But then you go and dishonor him by saying that he was so weak that he was better off dead. Where is your honor, Angeal?
I certainly don't see it. Zack was a hard working young man. Yes, he had a bad tendency to get in trouble and play some bad pranks. But when Ami entered into our lives, he took top her like an older brother would to a sister. She never would have been able to learn how to get around the halls of the ShinRa building without him. Don't you remember.
She's been working hard and he asked to help out and that's what she wanted help with. Zack was an honorable young man, and you threw that away along with his life." he hissed.
There was clapping from over where Amaterasu was chained and Genesis looked there. Sephiroth was clapping his gloved hands together with a mocking smile on his face.
"A beautiful speech Genesis. Too bad he couldn't hear it. You already killed him and he's halfway to the Life Stream now." he laughed, pointing at Angeal's body.
Genesis looked down at where Angeal's body was to see the last swirls of sea foam fading away.
"Shut it Sephiroth. You have no more honor than he did..." Genesis snapped, his gaze locking on him once more.
"Oh, ho, so now you're the one preaching about honor. Please, spare me. I don't need a lesson in honor from you." Sephiroth chuckled.
"Maybe you do, considering you're letting Hojo control you. All because of the promise for a better sparring partner. You know you could have asked me to try and push you harder. How do you know that I haven't holding back. That I don't have something that could have challenged you more?" Genesis spat back.
Sephiroth shook his head as he pushed off the wall and summoned Masumune to his hand.
"I know you Genesis. I know how you fight. You always go all out and you never hold back. That's why I know you haven't been holding back." Sephiroth practically grinned, "Now come and let me kill you so that I can start sparring with some actual adversaries."

Sephiroth raised Masumune over his left shoulder and darted forward. Genesis barely blocked the thrust, then twirled to the side.
'Sephiroth is faster than he normally is. Did Hojo give him something to help him fight?' Genesis asked himself, blocking another stab from Masumune.
Dashing to the left, he tried to get behind Sephiroth to attack him, but at the last second, Sephiroth spun around and blocked the attack and launched one of his own. Genesis dodged to the side, but was unable to fully get away from the attack. He lifted his hand to his upper arm and checked it. The leather had been split open and a line of blood rested just under the cut leather.
"First blood Genesis, just like always." Sephiroth laughed.
Genesis just glared at him darkly.
"My coat, you ass!" Genesis hissed.
"Oh so what, your precious leather duster got a cut in it. Whatever shall we do?" Sephiroth taunted him, trying to get him to lose his cool.
A warrior who doesn't keep their cool while they fight will make mistakes, and mistakes can cost a warrior their life. Genesis realized what Sephiroth was trying to do and pushed the fact that that his duster got cut out of his mind. His first priority was to defeat and kill Sephiroth, as it seemed it was the only way to win. Then to get past Sephiroth's three clones. Then get past Hojo.
Then get Ami and himself out of here. Turning his thoughts back to Sephiroth, he twisted away just before Masumune would have sliced into his throat. Dropping down, Genesis kicked Sephiroth in the stomach, then rolled backwards as Masumune stabbed down where he had just been crouching. Stumbling a little from the momentum he created he created when he rolled backwards, Genesis made it back to his feet and slashed at Sephiroth. A chunk of silver hair fluttered to the ground between them as Genesis pulled Rapier back.
Sephiroth reached up and fingered the shortened the chunk of hair then glared at Genesis.
"Low blow, Genesis, low blow." he growled at him.
"Aw, the Great Silver Demon of Wutai lost a piece of his precious, pretty silver hair! Oh no, the world is going to end!" Genesis mocked him, trying to use the same tactic Sephiroth had used on him.
It seemed to work as Sephiroth let out a yell and charged him. Dodging nimbly out of the way, Genesis smiled at the job he had done. It was Sephiroth himself that always said to keep a level head in battle. However, when it came to Sephiroth's hair, everything went out the door. Sephiroth was not a vain man by any means, but his hair meant a lot to him.
It was his only way to rebel against the control that Hojo had over him. Genesis dodged another sloppy lunge from Sephiroth. This time, Genesis stuck his foot out and tripped Sephiroth as he went by. Sephiroth's foot caught Genesis' and he went down face first into the floor, his hair fanning out around him. Genesis knew better than to laugh at him.
Sephiroth was well enough pissed as it was, he didn't need to do anything more. He prepared himself for Sephiroth's next attack. Genesis knew when Sephiroth became angry he also fought irrationally. Sephiroth levered himself off the floor and turned to face Genesis.
"You're going to regret that!" he growled raising Masumune again and charging him once more.
Sephiroth must have been beyond furious to have left the openings that Genesis noticed. He charged a powerful fireball, considering Sephiroth had a high tolerance to magic and fired it at his right hip. Masumune dipped down to block it and diffuse it and then Rapier lashed out and the right shoulder guard to Sephiroth's coat was missing and he had a deep gash in that shoulder, rendering that arm useless. Sephiroth jumped back away from the battle hissing and holding his shoulder.
"Nice hit, Rhapsodos. It's been a while since anyone has been able to wound me. Maybe you are a bit more of a challenge than I thought you were." he laughed.
Genesis gave a hollow laugh.
"I told you that I've been holding back. I didn't want to truly hurt you or Angeal, so I've been stopping myself." he said.
Sephiroth released his shoulder.
"Well then, no more holding back. Doesn't matter that I've been injured. Come at me full force. Even if it kills me, Rhapsodos. I want to see what you're made of. What you can really do." Sephiroth laughed loudly.
Genesis hung his head and whispered something.
"What was that, Rhapsodos?" Sephiroth asked.
"I said, if I do that then I'll end up killing you. But it seems I have no choice. If I want to get Ami out of here, I have to get rid of all of you..." Genesis clarified, "...Then so be it. I'll kill all of you. Even if it means Ami might not be happy with me for it. At least she'll be out of here and away from Hojo's clutches once more. She'll be free once more, like she deserves to be."
Genesis brought Rapier up in front of him so that the blade was flat in front of his face, the blue piece of Materia even with his eyes.
"I'm sorry Sephiroth..." he whispered.
Lowering the blade, he charged forward. Sephiroth readied himself for the coming assault, but just as Genesis reached him and Sephiroth brought Masumune down on his head, Genesis disappeared, leaving only his leather duster behind. Sephiroth looked around in confusion, trying to figure out where Genesis had gone. Turning around, Sephiroth was about to call out a taunt when Genesis appeared in front of him. Genesis grabbed the hilt of Masumune and yanked it out of Sephiroth's hands.
This put him off balance, pitching him forward. Genesis dropped Masumune and slashed with Rapier. Blood sprayed on the ground in front of him from Sephiroth's throat. Genesis sent Rapier away and caught Sephiroth as he fell. He gently turned Sephiroth over on his back and laid him on the ground.
Genesis watched the light leave Sephiroth's eyes, then the sea foam green swirls encase his body till nothing was left.
"Sorry Seph. It had to be done. You're my best friend, but I will do anything I have to to keep Ami safe. And if my friends turn against me and force me to fight them. Then I will cut them down to get to her." he whispered softly.
Genesis heard a scoff from the corner of the room. Genesis stood up and spun around, his eyes zeroing in on where the scoff had come from. It had been Kadaj.
"You think this is funny, you brat? Funny that I've been forced to kill the only friends I've had all my life. Sure, I said I had to do it, but that doesn't mean that I liked it. Those three men are all I've had since I joined SOLDIER. More like my family than the actual family I had back where I come from." he yelled.
Kadaj stood and scoffed again.
"Like I care. I never had any family except for my two older brothers. And even then, we're not that close. Who cares that you had to kill those guys. The point is that you're still alive.
That is the only point of battle. It doesn't matter who your opponent is so long as you defeat and kill them. That is all that matters in battle. Who cares if they're your friends or family. They are your enemy and need to be destroyed." the young man proclaimed, walking forward.
Hot anger coursed through Genesis' veins, but he forced it down. He couldn't afford to make any mistakes.
"I'm fighting you now, right? Then get your ass out here and lets fight. I'm tired of you already, and I don't want to hear any more of your mouth." Genesis snapped.
Kadaj gave a sharp laugh then reached behind him.
"Fine but remember, you asked for it."

Pulling out a double-bladed katana, he held it so the blade was facing backwards. Genesis studied how the boy held his weapon and figured out a plan to take him down. With how young he was, there was no way that he had properly mastered how to wield his blade in the way he was holding it. Kadaj shot forward and swung his katana swiftly. Genesis was not ready for the speed that the boy had.
Though he shouldn't have been surprised, seeing as how small the boy was. Genesis brought Rapier up to block the attack and was immediately assaulted with a second attack. Kadaj pushed away a little and kicked Genesis in the stomach, sending him flying back into the wall far across the other side of the room. Kadaj followed quickly with another strike and Genesis was barely able to bring Rapier up to block it. He then activated a piece of Materia and directed a gust of wind at Kadaj blowing him away from him and back across the room.
Kadaj landed on the ground a few meters away and cracked his head against it. It stunned him for the precious few seconds that Genesis needed to right himself and send a fireball in Kadaj' direction. As Genesis launched himself behind the fireball, the fireball was extinguished in front of him and Kadaj' katana was being slashed in front of his face.
Rapier came up and blocked the slash, but Genesis felt a small boot plant itself firmly in his sternum and kick upwards, knocking the air out of him. Genesis swung an arm down and wrapped it around the foot and twisted as he gasped for air. There was a sicking crack and Genesis let go of the boys foot. That was assuredly a broken ankle if not a leg. It was a step in the right direction to getting rid of the boy.
Genesis rolled to the side, trying to get air back into his lungs as he watched Kadaj clutch at his leg.
'It's a start.' Genesis thought to himself.
As Genesis was finally able to get air back into his lungs and stand up, Kadaj was able to stand up on his uninjured leg as well.
"That was a dirty trick, Rhapsodos." he hissed.
Genesis shrugged.
"Sephiroth always taught his SOLDIERs that nothing is a "dirty trick" when you are trying to survive. You best be ready for worse than that if you keep fighting me." Genesis sighed.
Kadaj growled loudly and threw his sword at Genesis. He easily dodged it and followed it as it lodged itself into the wall. Genesis stared at it for a moment then slowly looked back at Kadaj.
"Is this you surrendering to me or what?" he asked.
Kadaj just looked at the ground and closed his eyes, then looked back up at him with a glare that rivaled Sephiroth's.
"Never!" he yelled, launching himself forward on his one good leg.
Genesis swiftly moved out of the way. Kadaj' hands hit the wall to stop himself, then he pulled his katana out of the wall then turned to face Genesis.
"I never surrender!" he cried, launching himself forward again.
His blade clashed with Genesis' and even though Kadaj had a broken leg, there was still power behind his strike. Genesis shoved him back again and Kadaj stumbled back onto his broken leg. It collapsed under his weight, and Kadaj dropped his katana and held onto his knee. Seeing the only chance he knew he would get with this kid, he charged a powerful fireball and launched it at him. The flames engulfed him and Kadaj cried out.
Before Kadaj could do anything to defend himself, Genesis shot forward and lashed out with Rapier. Mint green eyes shot open wide as their owners head flew off its shoulders and landed on the ground. Kadaj' head rolled away as Genesis watched it. It was sad. Another young life lost before it was properly lived.
Didn't matter that the boy had been in Hojo's clutches. If he had been freed from Hojo, Kadaj probably could have learned so much, and may have had a different outlook on life. But now was not the time to be worried about that anymore. The silverette named Loz stood up in a rage, trying to stifle a couple of sobs as a few tears streaked down his face.

"H-how dare you kill my b-brother. We m-may not have been very close, b-but he was still my brother, you big meanie!" he yelled, pulling out his weapon, which looked to be a fancy arm shield of some sort.
Genesis took a step back from this show of emotion. All of the others hadn't cared one shit about what happened to the one before them. Where was this show of anger and concern for his so called "brother" coming from. However, Genesis couldn't concentrate on that. He had to get to Amaterasu.
There was only this teen, the gunner named Yazoo, and Hojo in his way. He was so close!
"It seems strange that you would care about your so called "brother", but it doesn't matter to me. You are all in my way of getting to Ami, that includes you Hojo." Genesis yelled, pointing Rapier at Hojo threateningly, "And I will slay you all to get to her if I have to."
Loz' stance wavered a little then strengthened once more.
"You won't kill me Rhapsodos!" he yelled, all signs of the previous tears gone.
Loz shot forward, leaving traces of blue light in his wake. Before Genesis knew it, Loz was in front of him. He let lose with a sharp, swift punch to the ground. The ground underneath his fist cracked and broke, sending huge pieces of it flying up into the air, along with Genesis. This surprised him for a moment but he quickly righted himself and began to lightly jump from rock to rock to rock, flitting back and forth almost like he was a butterfly, his foot never touching the rock for more than a second until he reached the ground.
Genesis had to admit, that move was impressive. However, right after Genesis had landed, Loz was right on top of him with another devastating punch to the ground, once again sending chunks of the ground flying up into the air. This time as Genesis tried to make his way back to the ground, Loz met him in mid air and tried to land a hit. Thanks to quick reflexes on Genesis' part, he missed. Landing on the ground again, Genesis turned and charged a fireball and searched for Loz but he was no where to be found.
Suddenly a falling piece of the floor in front of him shattered and Loz came flying at him through the debris and cloud of dust that was left. Genesis did the first thing that his body thought of: launch the fireball. Loz lifted his arm and the contraption on it flared to life and electricity appeared around it. The fireball hit it and fought with the electricity for a second then the fireball was redirected and smashed into the wall across on the other side of the room. Shock was clearly written all over Genesis' face.
Loz grinned, "Do you like Duel Hound's power. Your magic is useless against me Rhapsodos."
Genesis looked down at his bangle. Almost all of the Materia in his bangle were magic Materia. He only had a few pieces that weren't. Genesis then looked down at Rapier. His sword mostly relied on magic to do its heaviest amount of damage.
Genesis, shrugged, he would be at a huge disadvantage this way, but if he couldn't win with magic, he would use brute force. Genesis sent Rapier away and slammed a fist into an open palm.
"Well..." Genesis grimaced, "...if I can't use my magic, then I guess it's hand to hand combat. I'm not very good at this and considering your size, I'll be at a disadvantage, but I used to hand to hand spar with both Sephiroth and Angeal. I don't think fighting with you will be too different from fighting Angeal, but I know you won't give me the chance to recover if you get a good hit in. Though you must realize, the same goes for you. I'm not going to hold back on your ass.
You will go down."
Loz laughed as he cracked his knuckles then pulled off Duel Hound.
"Well Rhapsodos, I didn't think you had the balls to throw away your precious magic. After all, you depend on it so much. Oh well, if you say you've done hand to hand before, this should be interesting. But realize this, by the end of this fight, you'll be in a ShinRa body bag, headed back to your hometown for your parents to cry over your dead body. Or perhaps Hojo will take your body and make it useful, stranger things have happened in that lab of his." Loz sneered.
Genesis just shook his head and fell into his favorite hand to hand fighting stance.
"Let's just get this over with." he hissed.
"My pleasure." replied Loz, launching himself forward.
Loz made the first offensive move to hit Genesis' shoulder and Genesis brought up his hand and simply guided it away lashing in with his other hand and striking Loz squarely in the chest. The air was forced out of Loz' lungs and he stumbled back. Genesis didn't give him a chance to recover and shot forward to hit Loz in the shoulder. There was a loud pop and Loz cried out. He jumped back and away from Genesis holding his shoulder and glaring at him.
Tenderly feeling his shoulder, Loz pulled on his lower arm sharply, and there was another loud pop.
"Damn, one hit and you dislocated my shoulder. And you said you weren't good at this. I call bull shit, Rhapsodos." Loz huffed, still holding his arm and gently massaging it.
"I never said how good I was. It's just my opinion that I'm not very good. Others have told me I'm good. Now can we continue?" Genesis shrugged.
Launching himself forward, Genesis swung a kick at Loz' chest, but Loz caught his foot. Loz was about to twist his foot to break Genesis' leg, when Genesis swung his other leg up and scored a kick across the side of Loz' head. Managing to land from the kick, Genesis crouched down and swung his leg out again connecting with Loz' knee. There was a loud crack, and Genesis knew that leg was now useless.
If he could do the same thing to the other leg, Loz wouldn't be able to fight anymore. Loz lurched up on his one good leg and swung a fist at Genesis' face and Genesis leaned back to avoid it then grabbed his forearm and yanked him forward. Dodging around him so that Loz was in front of him, Genesis wrapped one arm around Loz' throat and used his other hand to grip Loz' chin.
"Never had to use this move on someone, and I don't like it, not my style. But to get rid of you, I'll use it." Genesis growled in Loz' ear.
Genesis pulled with his hands and Loz' head snapped to the side severing his spinal cord. Genesis opened his arms and allowed Loz' body to fall away from his own.
"Sorry man..." Genesis whispered, another life cut short in his eyes.
Genesis then turned and looked at what seemed to be the only threat left. He didn't see Hojo as a threat.
"You're the last one left. I suggest you give up and spare yourself from being killed." Genesis hissed at Yazoo.
Yazoo took a step back and closer to Amaterasu. Genesis knew that movement. That was wariness and a desire to keep what doesn't belong to you. Yazoo looked over to Hojo and Hojo became irate.
"You lose that girl you rat, and I'll kill you, not him!" he screeched.

Yazoo paled and looked back over at Amaterasu. Then confidence poured itself back into his body and he gave one last sneer at Amaterasu and lifted her face for one last kiss, before sauntering forward. Yazoo raised his gun and took aim at Genesis. He took three quick shots then flashed out of sight. There were three high pitched pings as the bullets were deflected off of Rapier, which had been re-summoned after the battle with Loz, and Genesis tracked Yazoo as he ran.
Yazoo was fast, however he was not as fast as Sephiroth so he was having an easy time tracking him. Yazoo fired off two more bullets before leaping in the air over Genesis and firing off four more. Genesis blocked all six and waited for Yazoo to land. Once he did, Genesis charged him and lashed out with Rapier. Yazoo ducked under Rapier, came up and kicked Genesis in the chest hard.
However just before the kick hit, Genesis threw up a shield which reduced some of the impact but he was still sent flying back. Flipping backwards, Genesis touching his hand to the ground to slow himself down, then regained his footing.

Two bullets came flying Genesis' way and he ducked under them, not bothering to block them with Rapier. Raising Rapier to eye level, Genesis ran his hand down it, activating the runes on it.

With the red runes glowing on it like molten fire, Genesis shot forward and before Yazoo could react, his gun was cut to pieces and rendered useless.
Yazoo leapt back, putting some distance between them.
"Damn it, Rhapsodos! You destroyed my Velvet Nightmare!" he yelled.
Genesis shrugged.
"So does that mean this fight is over? Probably not, but I can always hope." Genesis asked.
"Far from it!" Yazoo yelled, sinking into a fighting stance. '
Damn it, I don't have time for this. I have to get to Ami.' Genesis thought to himself.
He sighed then raised Rapier.
"Sorry 'bout this..." he whispered.
Disappearing seemingly into thin air, Genesis reappeared behind Yazoo with his sword to his throat, "...But you never should have touched Ami..." he hissed in Yazoo's ear dangerously, "...You never should have touched what is mine."
Pulling Rapier back sharply, the razor sharp edge of the sword slashed into Yazoo's throat and sliced it open. Blood sprayed out of the fatal wound as Yazoo fell to the ground, however Genesis felt no remorse for this kill. Yazoo had touched Amaterasu, and only he was allowed to do that. Genesis almost felt a sort of sick satisfaction as he watched the blood pour from Yazoo's throat.
'He deserved it...' he told himself.
Genesis then turned his attention to Hojo. As soon as Yazoo had been killed, Hojo had started to back away from Amaterasu, realizing there was no one to protect him from Genesis anymore. Dark hatred fueled Genesis on as he approached Hojo. He raised Rapier high above his head and an angry growl left his lips.
"This is for Ami, you bastard!" he hissed, before bringing Rapier down as hard as he could.
With the runes burning brightly on the blade, it cut through Hojo's body like a hot knife through butter. His body was split in half and blood sprayed all over, soaking Genesis' front and splattering all over his face. Though it should have disgusted him, Genesis made no move to wipe the blood away. Turning away from the fading body, Genesis walked to Amaterasu then sent Rapier away.
"Ami?" he asked softly, reaching out and gently touching an arm.
She made no reaction at his touch or voice. Genesis slowly and gently lifted her face so he could look at it, but as he did, sea foam green swirls began to surround her body. Realizing what was happening, tears began flowing down his face. He was too late...
"Goddess...please, please no...not this. Anything but this..." he begged, "Don't take her away...from me. Don't take away...what I love...so much. Please Goddess...please, don't take her. I beg of you...Don't take her from me..."

But the Goddess was not listening to him as the sea foam green continued to swirl around Amaterasu's body.
"Goddess please...no..." Genesis begged again in a whisper, kissing Amaterasu's lips softly.
Then the last swirls of sea foam took over Amaterasu's body and a few seconds later she was gone. Genesis fell to his knees crying, then threw his head back and screamed a soul-wrenching cry to the heavens.
"Minerva, how could you do this to me? How could you take away my heart, my soul, my life? Goddess, how could you take away the one thing that helps me live in this forsaken life of mine?!" he yelled to the skies above.
Then the room around him began to grow darker and darker. Genesis looked around frantically, putting his hands to the sides of his head and squeezing his eyes shut.
"No please...no darkness...I hate the darkness...please no..." he yelled curling in on himself.

He can be an obsessive yandere
Obsessive in a way that he’d always have her on his mind, wondering how she was, imagining their time together, or reminiscing of her warm hands in his cold ones
He was obsessive in that he cared for her so much that she became the center of his universe
However, he wanted to be the only center of hers
“When are you going to pay attention to me?” Hanako whined. When Yashiro was finished cleaning the bathroom, she started working on schoolwork. The apparition floated beside her, trying to read what she was writing that was so important.
“I swear, you can be like a cat sometimes...” Yashiro sighed as she went back to work, ignoring Hanako. Dejected, he started playing with the mokke, but he still felt down that she was focused on something else. He ended up losing against the mokke, too distracted to pay attention to the game.
He looked back up. He had been playing for a few minutes, but Yashiro wouldn’t move. She kept looking back and forth between papers and books. Her eyebrows furrowed in concentration, something the apparition noticed. He didn’t know how long he stared at her features, but at this point, he can probably draw her face from memory.
He didn’t notice his body float upside down in front of her. He didn’t even remember standing up to go there. He said nothing, and continued to stare. Yashiro knew he was staring, but she forced herself to continue her work. Although, she could admit that he was cute this way. Not that she’ll ever admit that to his face.
He can be a jealous yandere
Jealous in a way that he masks it so well, that he was the calm before the storm, except the clouds were already raining
He was jealous in that it was quiet, so quiet and small that you’d never see it coming and you’ll end up surprised at how much he bottled up
However, he wanted to do something about it
He never cared about it. Really, he didn’t. He didn’t. He thought that he didn’t. The amount of schoolwork that Yashiro received seemed suspicious. Even Tsuchigomori believed that she was doing too much homework. He felt his blood rise when he found out why.
“Why should you do his homework?” Hanako tried to keep a level head. Inside, he was seething with anger. Yashiro certainly had lots of things piled up, not to mention how dangerous her situation is, given that she was tied to Hanako.
“It’ll be fine, besides, I can be closer to him when it’s over!” Yashiro beamed. Hanako couldn’t say no to a face like that. He adored her too much to see her distressed. But he knew that the other kid was only using her. But trying to reason with Yashiro would lead him nowhere. Sure, they had this conversation before, but this time, she seemed sure.
He watched her walk away. His mind drifted to that kid. He’d have to check if this boy was worth her time. Not that he was, anyway. He passed by the hallways. Ignoring Tsuchigomori’s confused face, Yako’s surprised expression, and Akane’s shocked and almost scared face. They could tell that he was keeping something sinister within.
He can be a protective yandere
Protective in a way that he would come to her whenever there was danger, and would ward off any apparition that posed a threat to her life
He was protective in that his arms were wrapped around her frame in a secure and tight hug whenever she was scared
However, he wanted to protect her through any means necessary to avoid death
The murderous apparition didn’t stand a chance. He was trapped in the bathroom, Number 7’s domain. Hanako may be a mischievous, childish, and an overall playful guy. But even the Seven Mysteries know that he has a limit. The moment the apparition had its sights on Yashiro, he didn’t hesitate to run.
By the time he reached her, he thought it was too late. Her body was slumped against the wall, blood dripped down the side of her head as her eyes seemed close to shutting. Yashiro’s chest rose weakly, making it hard for her to breathe.
He felt his mood shift. In a flash, he cut up the apparition into a thousand pieces, causing his hat to fly, and left no evidence of what happened. Whenever he looked directly into their eyes, it was the eyes of dead man with nothing more to lose. The apparition howled in agony before promptly disappearing when he rushed to Yashiro’s side, cradling her head in his hands. He could feel a faint pulse on her wrist, letting out a sigh of relief.
“I could’ve lost you today.” He nearly wept as he buried his head on the crook of her neck. He wanted to remember the feel of her touch and keep it to memory. He wanted to memorize the outline of her face and figure before he could lose her. When Yashiro’s hand made contact with his hair, he found his heartbeat slow to a steady beat as he listened to hers.
He can be a gentle yandere
Gentle in a way that he would pet her hair, give her soft hugs, and look at her the way every girl would want to be looked at
He was gentle in that Yashiro is the only person he ever approached with comforting hands, the only person to be hugged that way, and the only person he looked at with such love
However, he wanted to be the only person who could be like that to her
Hanako found himself washing away the blood. The mokke delivered a first aid kit as he stitched her up. After watching Tsuchigomori stitch up his wounds and healed his bruises when he was a kid, he was able to remember how to do it. It’s a good thing he remembered how to.
Yashiro winced with pain, and there was nothing Hanako could do but to continue his work. He gave the bloodied rag to the mokke, who started to wash it away in the sink. He tried helping her stand up, but her legs gave out. Yashiro tried to speak, but she was too tired to talk.
“How have you always drawn the attention of apparitions lately?” He joked as he started to pack up the med kit. He almost felt jealous again, after all the ghosts that came to her. Yashiro looked away, with a flustered expression and a face full of regret. He noticed the change of atmosphere, immediately floating to her side, ready to comfort her. He heard a sniffle coming from her. “Hey, you’re gonna be okay—“
“No, it’s not okay!” He stopped his hand mid air, clearly taken aback by her outburst. He didn’t understand how she felt, but he knew she was sad. She was shaking so much, he wanted to wrap his cape around her, which is what he did. He dried her tears with it when she continued to speak. “He said he’d come for help, but it’s clear he escaped to save himself.” It was quiet after that.
He can be a playful yandere
Playful in a way that he would tease her endlessly, amused by her reactions and faces
He was playful in that he takes joy in the flustered expression she’d always have, which one could mistake for sadistic tendencies
However, he wanted to distract her from the apparition
There would be another time to be angry. Right now, he has a shaking girl in his cloak, clearly wallowing in embarrassment that she hoped for something that kid couldn’t bring her. The mokke held up a piece of candy for her to take. She unwrapped it and started to eat it when Hanako got an idea.
“Would you prefer to make him into udon?” A weird question, he knew as much. It was a weak joke, yet it sent giggles through her throat. He thought it was strange, how something like that would make her smile. Maybe it was because of the many apparitions he threatened to turn into udon. Somewhere in the school, Yako tensed up.
“Maybe turn him into daikon?” It was his turn to laugh. Yashiro was blushing, maybe because she compared the boy to a radish. Hanako laughed loudly, making Yashiro giggle a little, too. He smiled at the thought, turning that coward into daikon. Maybe Yashiro won’t be the only one he’ll be calling that.
Once Yashiro regained her strength, they exited the bathroom. Yashiro went home, hoping to avoid that boy again. Hanako waved goodbye as he went back to the school premises, searching for that kid. He passed by unsuspecting students, before he caught sight of his hair. His expression darkened, one thing running in his head. Something he hoped that Yashiro would never know.
He can be a quiet yandere
Quiet in a way that he never lets Yashiro know what’s going on in his head
He was quiet in that he never let her know how much he dreamed of killing that kid, how often he wanted him to stop looking for Yashiro, and how he wished Yashiro would only see him
However, he didn’t want to remember that one moment
Night fell. He isolated himself in the third stall of the bathroom. He let the darkness consume him, his thoughts drifting back to the boy. The mokke sensed a murderous aura surrounding the school mystery, and didn’t dare to enter the bathroom.
He thought of slicing his throat, for every lie that came out his mouth. He thought of scratching his eyes out, so that he could never look at Yashiro. He thought of cutting his hands out, so that he may never give Yashiro his homework ever again. He thought of carving words on his back and chest, so that the boy may see a reminder of his cowardice every time he had to change. He thought of paralyzing him, so that he may torture him for hours without any problems, and make him count how many limbs he’d cut off. He thought of pinning him to the ground, his kitchen knife in hand, kneeling over his body, readying the knife in the air, not caring about the boy’s shocked face.
His mind flashed to his brother. He remembered it clearly. The day he finally snapped and killed Tsukasa. He thought of that moment, repeating it until he could muster out his last words over and over again. He shook his head. His eyes focused on the door in front of him. He was drowning in his head, making him wonder how much more he had yet to discover about himself.
He thought of what Yashiro would think if he continued with his ideas. But he knew, that he was trying to atone for his sins. His heart was conflicted. He wanted revenge, true, but he wanted to be absolved. He wanted to end Yashiro’s pain, but he didn’t want to think about how he killed Tsukasa. A cold breeze flew through him as he continued to ponder. After a few minutes, he walked out of the bathroom, waiting for the next day to come, adjusting his hat as the mokke feared the intense gaze Hanako had on his face.

P5R: Rebel Girl (A FeMC Story/P5R Rework) Chapter 37: Standing Firm
It was lunchtime. Sumire had brought her food to the office of Dr. Maruki. She gulped. “Here goes.”
She was about to knock when she heard “Sumire-chan?” She looked up to see Dr. Maruki.
“Dr. Maruki!”
Maruki smiled. “Well, this was unexpected, but please, come in.” Maruki opened the door.
As they were about to walk in, they heard a voice. “Hold it.” They turned and saw the vice principal. “Principal Kobayakawa wishes to meet with you Yoshizawa.” He looked at Marui. “You should come as well.”
“Oh, uh, sure, I guess” Sumire said, confused.
Maruki noticed she was panicked. “Uh, I guess I’ll come along as well.” The three walked to the principal’s office.
They opened the room to an even bigger surprise. “Mom? Dad? Coach Hiraguchi?” Sumire yelped.
“Please, have a seat,” principal Kobayakawa said. Sumire sat down, while Mauki remained standing.
“What’s this about?” Sumire asked.
“I’d like to know as well,” Hiraguchi said. “You called me here suddenly, saying it was urgent.”
“Yeah,” Shinichi said.
“Ah, yes,” Kobayakawa said. “Please understand, this is all for Sumire-chan’s sake.” He got a little more serious. “It has come to my attention that Sumire hasn’t been going to practice every day that she could be.”
“Ah!” Sumire shrieked.
“Why I’m only hearing about this now is surprising to me,” Kobayakawa said. “I would have thought you would have called me by now Coach Hiraguchi.”
“Is this true?” Akane asked.
“Well…” Sumire started.
“It’s because I permitted it,” Hiarguchi said, surprising everyone in the room. “Sumire hasn’t been doing as well ever since… well…” Everyone looked a little pained, but Maruki also felt a tinge of guilt. Hiraguchi refocused. “She asked for time to find herself, and I agreed to that, so long as she came to practice once a week.”
Everyone was silent for a moment. “I see,” Kobayakawa said. “So it’s for her to get better at gymnastics.” Hiraguchi nodded. “Well, as noble as that goal is, you can agree that with her not pursuing gymnastics full time while still being an honors student might seem unfair.”
“What are you saying?” Shinichi asked.
“What I’m saying is we might need to remove her status,” Kobayakawa said. “I didn’t want to make any rash decisions, so I was hoping we could discuss this.”
“Are you out of your mind?!” Shinichi said, standing up.
“Calm down,” Akane said. Shinichi looked at his wife, nodded, and sat down.
“I can understand why you’d be upset,” Kobayakawa said, “but we at the school need to consider the feelings of all of our students.”
“You didn’t have trouble not thinking about that with the whole Kamoshida thing” Sumire said under her breath. Everyone looked at her surprised. She got surprised herself. “Did I say that out loud?”
Kobayakawa sighed. “While it was unfortunate what happened with Kamoshida, we had no idea it was going on.”
There was another uncomfortable silence. “Well, Sumire seems a bit… candid today” Maruki said. “Maybe we should hear what she has to say.”
Shinichi and Akane glared at him. “...Why are you asking to do this?” Sumire asked.
“Well, if you need to skip school for gymnastics events,” Kobayakawa answered. “Of if you’d like to pass on doing the otherwise mandatory clean up day next week to get some more training in.”
“...I was planning on going anyway,” Sumire said, blankly.
“I see…” Kobayakawa.
“I don’t think I’d be in great enough shape to ace any of the competitions,” Sumire continued. “Maybe I don’t need to be an honors student.”
“Sumire!” Akanae said.
“It’s alright,” Hiraguchi said. She looked at Sumire. “I understand you not feeling like you’d be at your best, but if you’re still interested in gymnastics, I still want you in those competitions. Win or lose, they’re good practice.”
“Now, hold on,” Kobayakawa said. “Being an honors student means getting results.”
“Huh?” Sumire said.
“Don’t you think that’s a bit much?” Maruki asked. “I don’t think that’ll help like you think it will.”
“Like you’re much help,” Shinichi mumbled.
“He’s gotten better…” Sumire said.
Her parents were shocked. Shinichi blurted out “But he-”
“I know!” Sumire said. “But in all honesty, it was helpful. If it wasn’t for him, I probably would still be barely able to get out of bed in the morning. Having Kasumi’s strength to lean on a little while longer pushed me enough to find my own strength. And while it hasn’t fully manifested, I’d like to think I’m getting somewhere.”
Shinichi and Akane were surprised. “If I may,” Maruki said. “I feel like giving Sumire the ability to do what she wants would be healthiest for her.”
“Now there’s an assessment of yours I can agree with” Hiraguchi said, snidely.
“I guess I’m a little infamous, huh” Maruki noted.
“So, what do you want to do Sumire?” Hiraguchi asked.
Sumire thought for a second. “Well, I want to continue doing gymnastics, and I wish to continue finding myself, but if I can’t be an honors student while doing so, then so be it.” Her parents were shocked.
“Now hold on,” Kobayakawa said. “I don’t think you can do gymnastics at the level you’re doing without being an honors student.”
“Well then, why don’t we make a deal?” Hiraguchi said.
“What kind of deal?” Kobayakawa said.
“Well, as Sumire pointed out earlier, you’re in need of a gym teacher,” Hiraguchi said. “You know my qualifications…”
“And your price is keeping Sumire’s honors status…” Kobayakawa said.
“A few other things as well” Hiraguchi. “But I’m sure we can discuss that further.”
Kobayakawa started Hiraguchi down. Hiraguchi stared back. “Very well. I’ll consider it. We’ll have a meeting to discuss this further. I’ll call with the details.”
“Thank you,” Hiraguchi said.
Kobayakawa smiled. “Thank you for your time.” Sumire, her parents, Hiraguchi, and Maruki left the room.
Shinichi sighed. “Are you OK dad?” Sumire asked.
Shinichi smiled. “It’s fine. It’s not about you. I just got called here from work at a bad time.”
“What happened?” Akane asked.
“My boss is breathing down my neck about this reporter asking questions of my crew,” Shinichi explained. Sumire blushed and averted her gaze. “But there’s not really much I can do about it.”
Maruki looked at Shinichi, Akane, and Hiraguchi. “I feel like I owe you all an apology” he said. The three looked at him. “While Sumire may have defended my actions, I cannot. I rushed my judgment. And while it seemed to have worked out in the end, I seemed to have caused the lot of you unintentional harm. As a psychologist, I should work towards lessening one's burdens, not adding to them. I’m sorry.”
They looked at Maruki. Maruki was waiting with bated breath. Shinichi approached him and said “At least you learned your lesson” and nodded.
Maruki laughed nervously. “Thanks?” Shinichi, Akane, and Hiraguchi left. Maruki looked at Sumire. “Well, it’s getting a bit late. Do you still want to eat lunch with me, or would you prefer to wait and talk with me after school?”
Sumire thought about it. “I… think I’ll wait.”
“Well then, have a good rest of your lunch” Maruki said. Sumire nodded and headed off. Maruki went back to his office.
Sumire headed to the lunch room where she found Ren, Ann, and Ryuji sitting together. She joined them. They could all sense a bit of nervous tension around her. “Oh, hey Sumire…” Ryuji said.
“How are you?” Ann asked. Sumire pulled out her lunch and started eating. “Woah, that’s a lot.”
As Sumire continued chowing down, Ren grabbed her shoulder, which caught her attention. “Hey. Are you alright?” Ren asked.
Sumire swallowed her food. “Yeah…” Sumire said. “It’s just… something happened.”
“You can tell us,” Ryuji said.
“Yeah, we’re all friends here,” Ann continued.
“Well… OK…” Sumire said. She explained what happened.
“WHAT?!” Ryuji said.
“That’s messed up,” Ann said.
“I mean, I don’t know,” Sumire said. “I still have a lot to figure out. There’s a lot of pressure that goes into being an honors student, and maybe not being one would make things easier.”
“Well, do you want to give up gymnastics?” Ren asked.
“Well, no…” Sumire said. “At least, not right now… It’s always been a part of who I am. A part of who WE are. Casting it aside feels like casting Kasumi aside.”
“I getcha,” Ryuji said. “That stuff can’t be easy to figure out.”
“We’re with you either way” Ann said.
“Whatever you want,” Ren began. She took Sumire by the hand. “We’ll support you. No matter what.”
Sumire started blushing, which in turn caused Ren to blush. When she saw Ren blush, Sumire smiled, nodded, and said “Right.”
“Yoshizawa-san?” rang out principal Kobayakawa’s voice. The gang of four looked up to see the improbably large man. “What are you doing sitting here?”
Ren felt a little guilty about the question. “They’re my friends,” Sumire explained firmly. “I needed some cheering up after what we talked about, and they helped me put some things into perspective.”
Kobayakawa looked at the three of them. “Yoshizawa, I’m not sure you should be hanging out with these three.”
Ann and Ryuji were mad. Ren just felt more guilty. “They’re my friends,” Sumire reminded him. “And I can hang out with whoever I want. They’ll help me get back on track faster. That’s what you want, right?”
The three second years looked at her in disbelief. “Holy shit…” Ryuji said.
“Sumire…” Ann added.
Kobayakawa grew distressed. “You wanted to see me?” Makoto said from behind him.
Kobayakawa turned. “Ah, Niijima-san. Perfect timing.” Makoto was confused. Kobayakawa pulled her up. “Niijima here is the student council president.” Kobayakawa explained. “Maybe she could be your friend.”
Sumire looked at the odd display. “Maybe… But these three ARE my friends.”
Kobayakawa got frustrated. Makoto broke from his grip. “What are you doing?” she demanded.
“Er, well, I was just explaining to our honors student that these three… might not be the best companions,” Kobayakawa said.
Makoto raised an eyebrow. “You’re referring to their circumstances, correct?”
“See? Niijima-san is very adept” Kobayakawa explained.
“I’m not finished,” Makoto said. Kobayakawa was stunned. “As far as I know, everything about Takami was either a lie set up by Kamoshida, or forced on her by Kamoshida. Sakamoto has been on his best behavior ever since he had a chat with his homeroom teacher. And as to Amamiya, she hasn’t caused any problems since she’s gotten here, correct?”
“Well, uh, I guess that’s true” Kobayakawa mumbled.
“Then I don’t see the problem,” Makoto finished.
Kobayakawa and Makoto glared at each other. ‘Do you have any information?” Kobayakawa said, changing the subject.”
This took Makoto by surprise. “Well, no…”
“Very well then” Kobayakawa said. He walked off.
Makoto sighed, partially because of relief, partially because of her nerves. “Hey” Ren said. Makoto looked up. “Thanks.” Makoto smiled. She left shortly after.
“Wow. I didn’t think Niijima-san would do that” Ann said.
“Yeah, well, we’re learning that people aren’t always what they seem,” Ryuji pointed out.
“Excellent point Ryuji,” Ren said.
Sumire checked her phone. “Ah! Is that the time?” She began vigorously munching down. Ren giggled. Soon after, lunch was over and the group headed back to their classrooms.
During their afternoon classes, Ryuji texted the group.
Ryuji: So, when are we going after Madarame’s treasure?
Yusuke: I would like to know as well.
Yusuke: He’s been getting more temperamental by the day.
Jose: Is that why you’ve been refusing my offers to hang out?
Yusuke: Correct.
Yusuke: Madarame would get mad if I wasn’t back before sundown.
Yusuke: I’m sorry.
Jose: It’s OK.
Jose: I will keep track of the time if need be.
Yusuke: I don’t wish to arouse suspicion.
Jose: Very well.
Jose: We’ll have all the time in the world after Madarame confesses.
Yusuke: True.
Ren: Well… About that…
Ryuji: ??
Ren: Kosuke paid a visit to LeBlanc last night.
Ren: He told me he was going to paint a picture of me and give it to me by next week.
Ryuji: Huh.
Yusuke: Interesting.
Ren: I think this gives us some breathing room as well.
Sumire: So, do you want to do it the day after the trash clean up?
Ann: Oh yeah. I’d forgotten about that.
Ryuji: Makes sense. We could plan everything after we clean up.
Ren: Well then, it sounds like we have a plan.
Ren: Later.
Ren put her phone away.

After reading a lot of fics and imagines, I decided to write and post something about my Oc and Reno during the events of Before Crisis 😊
Hope you like it! And I’m sorry if Reno is out of character and if there’re mistakes, english isn’t my first language.
Pairing: Reno x Oc (Neila)
Warnings: swearing, blood,torture, mentions of dead.

The deafening sound that was being made by the chopper’s propeller didn’t give a chance to strike up a conversation. The long ride to the proximities of Nibelheim was spent in complete silence between the two Turks and the SOLDIER. It wasn’t uncommon during war times that the brute-strength from SOLDIER and the slyly approach, a Turk’s trait, were paired up when required. Although the built-up rivalry between the two sections could be almost touched. 
Tseng ,on one of the two pilot seats, never took part in these meaningless arguments. He thought both divides had their purposes to benefit Shinra interests. The Turks were more suitable for works which didn’t need a straight strike like  SOLDIERs were. Of course they had to deal with more or less undesirable tasks but Turks were more refined than that. 
However Reno at his left, on the other pilot seat was everything a Turk shouldn’t be. He had got a big mouth, usually tried to pick up fights with SOLDIERs, with obnoxious ways of doing missions but he was good accomplishing them nevertheless. Tseng had to give that to him. 
On the other hand was Neila, a second-class SOLDIER,  at the back of the chopper. Tseng had scouted her some years prior in Junon, dragging her out of that fortified  town straight to the SOLDIER tests. He had seen potential into that teenage girl, which soon was proved. She had a way with magic and an extraordinary stamina. Perhaps she didn’t demonstrate a powerful brute force or strength as most SOLDIERs did, but in reality she had got it after all those mako baths and trainings. Neila had trained her ass to where she was standing.
The ride could have been worse if the airscrew hadn’t plunged the snarky remarks of Reno about the unnecessary presence of a SOLDIER around. 
Tseng just became lost into some mission reports or files just after Reno had taken the helicopter off, , whilst Neila had brought some book with her to read at the back seats calmly.  
After almost six hours of riding, Tseng took control of the chopper. “The last sighting of Hideki was of him heading to the mountains. Some trail must have been left behind. Find him and recover the files he has stolen. Then put them back into the Shinra Manor” He repeated the main parts of their mission.. 
“Gotcha.” Reno confirmed, stepping to the doors, while Neila gave just a nod as acknowledge.
“Don’t get yourselves into fights. Discretion, Reno!” Tseng called the red-haired Turk out.” is a must.” He still didn’t understand why Veld had chosen him for this mission. Other Turks would have been more suitable for this task, but Veld suspected Avalanche had something to do with it. Furthermore, the stolen goods were important classified op about secret experiments, which had been made years ago. He guessed the third in command Turk was the best option at his boss’ eyes. 
Tseng would retreat to Rocket Town, something about another mission of his, where he would wait till Reno notified him theirs was complete.
Jumping off, Reno and Neila fell over the rocky floor. Fresh and clean air filled their nostrils rapidly. They had landed far from the village, in the mountain chains surrounding it. 
Neila tensed up the same moment her feet touched the field. An odd grieving feeling started to overwhelm her, with a rhythmic pounding, beating softly at the sides of her head. She assumed the lack of rest was the reason behind it.    
A sour grimace appeared upon Reno’s face. He hated the countryside with all of his being. He had grown up in the slums, used to the mako steam filling the air, and although he was the first one to say the slums were garbage, Midgar felt like home, and all that rural areas with its nature and clean air sickened him. 
“ Let’s finish this fucking shit as soon as possible “ Reno said, pocketing out a cigarette, and lighting it up. Both of them strode up the hills, scouting the fields for any signs of Hideki. 
“You know smoking is bad for your health, right?” Neila spoke once she kneeled down before some footsteps. The headache fading away with each step they took farther.
“ And what?” He retorted after her irritated. She had seen him smoking several times before, often hanging out after a long day at work. What has gotten into her now?  
“ Nothing, just that is bad, I doubt Veld approves his Turks ruining their health. “ She turned her head to look at him. 
“ Lucky for you,  Veld doesn’t have a say about it.” He puffed on his cigar slowly, as a silent challenge. 
“ It’s a bad addiction. Just saying.” She wasn’t that fond of  his harsh attitude, which intimidated and annoyed her. 
“ There are worse addictions. I’ll die first working than from smoking, sweetheart. But your concern touched me.” Sarcasm in his voice, irritating Neila more. “Besides, you’re one to talk.” A SOLDIER trying to lecture him about bad addictions. He felt the urge of laughing at the occurrence. 
“ Suit yourself then.” She gave up about having a civilised conversation with the Turk. “ These footsteps… Hideki must have climbed up to the top. What do you think?” 
Reno kneeled besides her frame,invading her personal space and inspecting the trail. “ What a dimwit.” His cerulean eyes following the tracks ahead them. 
“ Excuse me?” Neila frowned at his words, and stood up on her feet again, glaring at him amazed.  The warmth his figure let off had felt so good against her bare arms.
Reno started to stride up the path, leaving her behind. “ If he’s gonna steal from Shinra, at least he could have tried not to let a sloppy trail of footsteps. Not that I’m complaining though.” He wasn’t, he rather wanted to be back in Midgar soon, but he also liked some type of challenge, not something this… simple. 
“ If you say so… Well,this way we’ll finish the mission in a record time.” 
“ Don’t get your hopes up, sweetheart. These mountains are full of monsters who have been living between mako residues for years. It will be a miracle if Hideki has not been devoured by those freaks yet. “ 
“ That’s why I’ve been deployed too? Because there are mako-contaminated monsters roaming around?” Neila guessed.
Reno didn’t answer her, and just keep on going up to the peak of the mountain, following Hideki’s clues. 
“ Now that I think about it. Does Hideki have anything to do with Wutai?” Neila asked again with curiosity. Brilliant mako eyes searching for the named man around the caves and boulders in their path. 
“ If I tell ya, I’ll have to kill ya.” A cocky smirk curled up his lips, shooting a side glare to the SOLDIER, while he threw the cigarette and stepped on it.  
“ You wouldn’t, not that you could anyway.” A loud laugh burst from him, who bent forward slightly, pulling a hand on his chest. “ What’s so funny?” 
“ Oh, sweetheart, I would, but not before enjoying other things first.” He sent a playful wink towards her, hidden intentions not that well hidden. The attraction between them wasn’t a secret though. 
“ In your dreams Reno.” Neila answered back, folding her arms and rolling her eyes. 
“ Have already done that yo.” Playfulness splattered upon all his features, and enjoying the blushing and embarrassment creeping Neila up. 
They were reaching the top without any unpleasant encounters, yet. Maybe Reno was right,and Hideki had already been eaten up. 
“ I know you’re joking, cut it off.” She ended the talk, ashamed. She would be lying if she said she didn’t think about it before. Even if Reno was insufferable most of the time, he still was attractive with his flashy red hair, blue eyes and those red marks, and without saying his strange selection of customized uniform. And his personality was tempting too, although it pushed her buttons too many times. 
“Oh? You are ashamed now? A strong SOLDIER like you? “ He carried his ironic remarks on, making her still more uncomfortable. 
“ I’m gonna make you swallow that rod of yours unless you shut up.” He was driving her up the wall. 
“ I would like to see ya trying to do it. “ The joking end up abruptly when a cry out for help crossed the air. Both of them ran up the last steps till the top, being welcomed by a hideous scene. 
There was their target, surrounded by a group of what looked like a four mutated praying mantis. Mako influence for sure. A leg and an arm had been ripped off from his body, blood gathering on the rocky land beside him. 
The bugs must have come across the man shortly before them. Unless they finished the monsters off, Hideki would be eaten and no options of getting information from him would be possible. 
Jumping out to action, Reno took his electric rod out, and Neila her sword. Although the mantis weren’t that many, the mako running through their organisms, made them stronger, and a  pain in the ass. 
If Neila remembered right from previous encounters, Mantis’ weak point was ice magic. “ Reno, back off!” She yelled out, while she gently caressed the green materia placed inside her left bracelet’s gauge.
The Turk was about to retort at her, but with his characteristic speed, he retreated back after noticing her intentions. 
The ice magic flew straight across the battlefield, hitting and freezing three of them. 
Now getting rid of the mantis should be a piece of cake.  With three frozen-up, the remaining  one didn’t stand a single chance. 
Lightning trails were drawn around the frozen monsters, followed by unpleasant cries in pain, which would have caused your ears to start bleeding.In the blink of an eye, Reno had wipe those things out with just one strike. 
“Man, I hate the bug-type monsters, I really do.” Neila murmured after taking care of the last one at Hideki’s foot. Her standard SOLDIER sword deeply impaled in its thorax, and some type of purplish blood splashed on her uniform.  
“ Well now, now… What do we have here?” Reno walked slowly, watching the almost limbless man laying down in agony. The facade he had showed previously around her, was replaced by a sadistic and cruel one, sending goosebumps down her spine. 
The SOLDIER wasn’t unaware of the inhuman things the Turks did, but she had never got the opportunity to witness one yet. 
Realization shone in the dark eyes of Hideki. “ A-a Turk!” stuttering, he dragged himself as far as he was able from Reno. “ Please! I didn’t do anything!” 
“ Of course you would say that, wouldn’t ya?”  Reno stepped onto Hideki’s stomach, pinning him down with force, not letting him more room to scape, or keep dragging on. “Now about the files you’ve stolen...Do you still have them on you or did you already give them away?
“ Reno, he’s lost too much blood. He won't…” Neila tried to say watching carefully the blood ponds. 
“ Please have mercy! I didn’t give nothing away! “ The man yelled, air leaving his lungs in short breaths. He didn’t have much time left. 
“Oh? So you still have them. “ Reno checked inside Hideki’s backpack, finding some type of old books and folders. “Who’s your contact?” 
Neila was speechless with the scene in front of her. Their target was crying and shouting due to an unbearable pain, his blood still blooming from his open cuts and lost limbs. And Reno was interrogating him not caring about his poor and bloody status. 
She had also done unnamed acts in her missions during the war time, but her work never consisted in torturing like this. 
“I don’t have a contact!” 
Reno chuckled before positioning his electric rod upon the man’s throat, as a silent threat. “ I’ll ask again idiot. Who’s your contact?” 
“Please!” an electric wave went across the injured body, more screams of pain could be heard, but soon were vanished amongst the rocky walls of the tallest mountains.
“Did ya change your mind? Or should I keep playing with you? Long time I don’t electrocute someone, I’ll be sure of making the most of it.” The Turk was smiling pleased with the sight of the man shouting. 
“Fujito! It’s Fujito!” Hideki answered. Fear could be read on his face. 
“Where?”  Reno pressed more the bar against his skin. 
“In the nearness of Wutai! Please I don’t know more, let me go!” 
A sigh escaped Reno’s mouth while he was dialing Tseng, who picked up instantly. He told Tseng all the information obtained, and after a brief minutes and a nod, Reno pocketed back his phone. 
Tseng must have given him directions.
“ Not that you would be able to reach that far… “ With a last look at Hideki, Reno stepped off of him, and walked back down the slope. “Come on sweetheart, we still have work to finish with. “ A gesture with his left hand told her it was the time to continue. 
Neila ran behind him, words caught in her throat, unable to bring them up. Some things couldn’t be approved, but work was work, and they had to do it. 
The flirtatious and cocky facade had been back on Reno’s face during the long rambling to Nibelheim. Several encounters with monsters slowed their descent.  Even though the mission had started rather earlier in the morning, when the sun hadn’t risen down yet, it was almost nightfall when they reached the village.
“ I guess we’ll have to leave things for today, don’t ya think?” 
“ Probably.” The headache had returned with every step they took. Not that it wouldn’t let her fight or keep with the mission, but it was getting tiresome now.
“I’ll notify Tseng, go ahead babe.” Reno stood outside the inn while Neila entered to ask for the room keys. The owner would be kinder to her in her second class SOLDIER uniform than to Reno with his characteristic and recognisable black suit.  
“ It was about time a SOLDIER was sent here to clean up the surroundings crawling with beasts.” The owner greeted her with a smile. 
“ Yeah, well… “ Shyness taking the best of her. She was awful at talking with strangers. 
“ Shinra booked two chambers, I guess those are yours. “ Veld must have taken care of it. The girl nodded, uncomfortable. “ Here you are. If you’re gonna clean the place, you’re gonna need a place to rest.” the keys were put on the wooden counter. 
“Thank you.” Taking the keys, she was ready to head up to the chambers, but Reno shuffled himself inside the inn, greeting the owner, whose face changed to a grimace of disgust.   
The Turks weren’t well welcomed here either. 
“ I’m exhausted sweetheart, we should go to bed. “ his arm over her shoulders, guiding her upstairs. 
“ Your key.” Neila offered the object to Reno. “ And please, hands off of me.” 
“ You’re hurting me.” A false expression of pain crossed Reno face, while he grab the key, but still refused to let her go. “ Acting all tough as if you don’t want it.” mockery present in his tone. 
“ That’s because…” 
“Don’t you dare lying to me. I’m not blind, nor I’m a fool. We’ve been toying with each other for a while.” He cut her off after a chuckle. Reno was starting to get tired of this shit. Fooling around was okay for a bit, but not for that long.  
“ And? You’ve got a problem with it?” swallowing the shyness, she was able to answer him. She wasn’t used to flirting , let alone a straightforward confrontation like this. For Bahamut, she had never had anything with anyone. When she was still a teenager Tseng had brought  her along to Midgar as a SOLDIER candidate. All of that romantic stuff was new for her. 
“ Don’t ya think it’s enough?” Reno had dragged her in front of him,holding her still with his hands on her shoulders, and leaned forward, blue eyes focused on hers. 
“ I doubt the corridor is the best place to discuss anything Reno.” tearing apart her gaze to the side.
“ You’re a tease.”  Reno might have been a sadistic, and might have done inexcusable things during his career, but forcing a woman was out of the question. There were some boundaries that couldn’t be crossed. 
“ It’s just that… I’ve never…” She whispered, ashamed. 
“ Ya know that I know, don’t ya?”  He had thought she wouldn’t have been that idiot to believe  that he hadn’t caught that she was inexperienced. He was a Turk for Bahamut's shake, he had been trained to pick up into people’s traits. Besides, her clumsy acts and nervous reactions at his flirting, demonstrated her innocence, anyone with two eyes would have caught it in a jiffy.    
The surprise in her features said otherwise. He let out an exasperated sigh, and released her shoulders, letting her free of his grip.It wasn’t that he was going to give up, but until she had made up her mind, he wouldn’t make a move “ It’s late and we still have a long day tomorrow. A comfy bed is waiting for us so… see ya tomorrow’s morning sweetheart. “ Giving her one of his signature smiles and shuffled to his assigned chamber.
Neila bit her lip, thoughts racing across her mind, but walked behind him and tugged his clothed arm, turning him to face her. 
His mouth slightly opened of surprise at the sudden movement she had done. This time Neila was the one leaning forward to him, her eyes sparkling with resolution.
Well, it looked like she had already made her mind up. In the blink of an eye, Reno shortened the distance till their lips meet into a sweet and naive kiss briefly.
 Once they broke apart, the smug smirk made its way back to Reno’s lips. “ See? It wasn’t that difficult.” 
“ You can’t have you mouth shut, can you?” blush drawing onto her cheeks, but her eyes were glittering more than normal. 
Reno let out a laugh, and bit his tongue to avoid saying a snarky remark before leaning down to meet her lips back again, this time into a more passionate and long kiss. After all, they’ve been playing around for weeks, it was about time.

people really seem to hate aerith’s characterization in cc, but i. love it. so much. we only see glimpses of her past in ff7 proper, her mother saying she was always a cheerful girl, but we get things in ff7r that contradict that, that show more, as well as ff7 itself. she says she’s never good at anything, that she always quits. we see that she talks to her death mother but has never admitted that even to her adoptive mother. we see that she thinks she has no friends even tho she interacts very frequently with children both in cc and pretty much everywhere she goes someone has something nice to say about how helpful and kind and friendly she is.
i think we can chalk this disparity of what she thinks of herself vs what other people think of her as ‘that time in between being a bubbly child that performed happiness so her mother wouldn’t worry or throw her away’ and ‘the time after zack in which she actively tried to be a braver and more friendly, helpful person who could fight for herself.’
i think aerith has a lot of issues. as a child, she feared being abandoned. she had two safe spots---the church and her home, and even then, the turks always knew where she was, though they left her alone. it made her cling to the mother she was safe with even more, the places where the flowers grew were places where aerith could grow as well. but she always knew that this peace and growth was temporary. like a flower, one day she would be plucked and killed, like her mother was, and if that wasn’t enough, i hc her mother was a peculiar kind of woman who didn’t particularly want aerith and used her as an emotional crutch, and now that she’s dead, is basically the voice of aerith’s anxiety over not being ‘normal’ and instead being part of a ethnicity of chosen people doomed to die. she hears so much death, every where she goes, every where she turns. the spirits are friendly---but they are also gloomy, and sad. she can hear those in the lifestream, but she can also hear the voices in-between, caught and stuck, asking for her help and an open sky, and change---while she knows it must be necessary, frightens her, because she views herself as weak and broken.
they performed experiments on aerith. nothing that gave her super strength or mako eyes---but enough that she would always view herself as a freak, who the rug could be taken out from under any moment, so she would go back to torture. it seems such an inevitability its easy to give herself up for marlene. even when she thinks she’ll be bred with a talking dog----she has always assume the worst is to come, and that she can’t fix any of it, even if she tries.
zack does not give her the hope that she is ‘normal’, that she will live a very long time and be fabulously happy, surrounded by loved ones for the rest of her days. no, instead he gives her a better hope, a new dream. the soldiers scare her because they are ‘not normal’ just like aerith is ‘not normal.’ and being ‘not normal’ is being a monster. zack shows her that even with all that soldier has done which she knows by heart is evil, even tho zack has been experimented on and has gone through great loss, his smile and his heart and his sense of humor and his blunt silly mean streak are painfully, wonderfully beautifully loveable. and she can be as well, even if she is a freak, even if she is frightened, even if, just as ever soldier is, she is destined to be experimented on and then die for shinra’s goals.
he makes her braver. she tilts her chin up, she makes more jokes, she has her own sense of humor that can sometimes be mean and sarcastic in its teasing, but is always out of a place of compassion and the ease with which zack seemed to stroll through the world that surprisingly actually comes to aerith in a way it never REALLY did to zack, the perpetually socially inept when it mattered.
aerith had always used her kindness, her friendliness, her smiles as a method for keeping her mother alive and not weeping. and then she used her bubbliness, her persistence in getting back up again and never letting anyone see her sweat to make sure her new mother didn’t throw her away to the turks.
she still has abandonment issues. still feels like she has to protect the world. still feels like she’s always being watched. but if she is being watched---she’s going to give them a show. if she is going to die---she’s going to have fun until that last final moment. and if she is going to die alone---she’s going to be brave, she’s going to stand up for herself and whoever’s there with her. she’ll sacrifice herself, because that’s what aerith does, she puts herself down to make other flowers grow and she protects them from being stepped on by anyone else---but she’ll do the right thing even if it scares her. that’s what zack taught her. that she’s worthy of love and kindness and bravery, even when she doesn’t feel like she is.
and wouldn’t you want to spend one last day with someone that made you feel that way? wouldn’t you go on a whole adventure with a new boy that reminds you so much of him in all the wrong ways so much so that you can almost push the puzzle pieces together---even when he hurts you, you can laugh it off, you can consider it part of your sacrifice? wouldn’t you want to help him? wouldn’t you want to see the sky with him?
you do see it eventually. and it’s so big and so vast, you finally realize every scared, sad voice in your head has a place in this world. and so do you. 
at least for now. 
no one lives forever, right? but you can make it matter. like zack made it matter.
he still has a place in this world. in your heart. he holds you up like that bow holds up your hair. and when you’re sad---really, really sad. you hear his voice. and you wish you didn’t.

Working with Avalanche was something Natasha wasn’t certain she’d ever wrap her head around fully. She didn’t always agree with Shinra’s methods, but she didn’t agree with Avalanche’s either. Now they shared a common enemy however, a specter of the not so distant past. Natasha had her opinions about that too, she wisely kept them to herself.
She knew Aerith was not pleased to be kept away from the action, to be guarded like a defenseless princess. But that ex-SOLDIER turned Mercenary had been insistent, and something in those mako blue eyes made it clear to the Turk that he knew something and it was bad and it had to do with Aerith.
“Look just keep her safe alright? We’ll find Sephiroth and take care of him,” Cloud insisted.
Natasha was silent as she stood on Tseng’s left, back just slightly while Reno and Rude were at his right and Elena next to her. It felt weird not having Clint there, but he was one of the few of their ranks that had a family, and it was better he stayed out of this.
“We will do our best,” Tseng nodded, leaning on the cane that helped keep him up right.
“You better fucking kill that bastard,” Reno growled, only Rude’s hand on his shoulder kept him grounded.
They were all pissed, Sephiroth had almost killed their leader, how he was standing right now, Natasha wasn’t certain. Healing materia, a lot of it she’d imagine.
“Nat should do it.”
The smaller redhead blinked at Elena’s suggestion, glancing to the other woman curiously.
“That asshole knows shit about her, she’s a shadow, the rest of us he’s seen a lot, Nat’s better at hiding than any of us.”
“Elena isn’t wrong,” Tseng nodded and looked to the other red haired Turk, he wondered about one thing however, but it was just slightly different wasn’t it? Still Natasha was shadows and secrets, “Natasha, you have free rein. Do not make any contact unless something goes wrong.”
“Yes, sir.”
It was a bit of a risk taking Aerith to her cabin in Icicle Inn, but no one else knew about it. It was close to the Northern Crater, but that she felt was a good ruse, because why hide Aerith so close to somewhere they knew Sephiroth had been seen?
It was absurdly quiet, it made Natasha nervous as she sat there, watching the flower girl who was as far as she could tell mediating. It was rare for Natasha to want to talk, but right now, any sort of idle chit chat she’d welcome while they waited for who knew how long.
“You look tired, I can keep watch for a bit.”
Natasha blinked and shook her head, “I’m fine, and I’m guarding you, remember?”
“Yeah but…” Aerith huffed.
Several minutes passed before Aerith spoke again.
“Natasha, can I show you something?”
Her full name, she had never heard her full name from Aerith, it was always Nat, occasionally Tasha because she heard Clint call her that once, whatever it was, it was serious, “sure.” Natasha blinked as the younger woman produced a materia, it looked like any materia at first glance, but then the Widow noticed it was void of color. White materia?
“This is a special materia and if something happens to me, I need you to give it to Cloud and the others, okay?”
There was something in Aerith’s tone Natasha didn’t like and it was the lack of speculation, as though she believed something would happen to her.
“Nothing’s going to happen to you Aerith, I won’t let it. I promise.”
“Don’t, don’t make a promise I know you can’t keep, I know you don’t say that word unless you mean it, Natasha. Please,” tucking the materia away, Aerith moved in front of the other woman and grasped her hands, “only promise you’ll do what I ask.”
Aerith’s eyes were intense sometimes, and Natasha felt she could see into her very soul and possibly beyond that. The girl was a strange one, she knew things and Natasha had a twisting feeling in her gut she knew something now. “Okay.”
“Good,” Aerith gave a nod, her hair bouncing with it and a smile taking over her features, chasing away the seriousness.
It was hard to say no to Aerith too, even Tseng struggled with it at times. Something in her peripheral caught Natasha’s attention in that movement, a shape, a shadow passing by a window. Instantly one of her guns was out and she backed up to cover her charge, “Aerith, stay behind me and do what I ---” The weight of a large hand on her shoulder cut her sentence off, muscles in her throat contracted as her gaze moved, widening as she beheld the hand encased in a black glove. Somehow she moved away, turning and aiming at the tall dangerous figure and no sight of Aerith. “Where is she?”
He said nothing and simply smiled and stared.
“Answer me.” Natasha’s focus began to narrow to her target, the legendary SOLDIER that had fallen so far and her mind began to empty and fill with white noise, feeling her finger tense against the trigger, she knew she was going to shoot him and she had to make it count. Aim for the heart.
The looming figure took a step forward and the cabin echoed with the shot.
“No… he was… nonono...fuck,” dropping her weapon Natasha moved to Aerith, trying to staunch the blood flow, but it was no use, the shot had pierced one of the arteries in her neck, “I’m sorry I… I thought I saw him. I saw him. Aerith I didn’t mean to…”
Unable to speak, Aerith managed with what strength she had left to reach up and touch Natasha’s cheek and met her gaze before taking a final breath.
Natasha has killed people, but she’s never held one of them as they died. She’s never felt anger over killing them and definitely not sorrow. She had failed and she never fails. But she would keep her promise and get the strange white materia to Cloud no matter what it took.

alright, so. i beat remake last weekend, but i didn’t want to come out with my newfound yufi information + meta right off the bat. i think this is an appropriate time to do so now, though. naturally, i’ll tag as spoilers, but if you need anything else, let me know.
also, my verdict? i am so glad i went into this blind, without any hype or expectations or people from fandom whining about it. yet again, i am so happy + i had an incredibly joyous experience.  this game fed me + also took over my life in a way i’ve not been possessed in some time so like......... good for it.
also no, i truly don’t miss hearing everyone’s hullabaloo +  i don’t wanna hear ur complaints of “ it didn’t say when part 2 is ” so like miss me with that. 
also warning: if u didn’t know already, fandom is WILD towards y.uffie for some reason and i also addressed that, so like if you’re from vii fandom u might seriously wanna read this bc... it’ll be pertinent to u understanding my feelings behind it.  i did address some questionable topics like the underaged oversexual portrayal + beastality that’s popular for her and i am NOT HERE FOR IT so if u came for that................. issa no from me dawg. when i say unbearable.... i mean it. fandom grossed me out. y’all wild.
anyway. thoughts below !
some things that were CONFIRMED for me were:
> midgar is lax around its anti-wutai rhetoric in its most important parts ( namely, hq, wall market, and avalanche ). for propaganda’s sake among the common people, it stands to create a united front. but in consumerism & in strength, they consider the wutai equals just as anyone else. 
see: tseng in the turks; madam m in wall market; the supplier for avalanche.
i would even argue that sector 5 / wall market is the safest place in midgar for wutaians, given don corneo’s obvious fetishism ( and that really............. isn’t saying a lot ).
i’m not going to entertain that it’s an “ admiration for culture and architecture ” in true weeaboo fashion given that of all positions he could give madam m to hold, her duties are to screen women that would be appealing to his aesthetic and to run a massage parlor where the highest bidder gets to have a happy ending. she is literally the “ asian parlors are actually fronts for brothels ” stereotype except in this sex trade, all women go to don corneo. i will have no apologists in this house. 
i have more developing thoughts on madam m like how she might be doing the sex trafficking part in her own self-interest / as a type of self-preservation, like the don might say “ well if u don’t want to be a wife then u better find some for me ” but... 1) this isn’t the post for that and 2) that logic does not explain why chocobo sam and andrea rhodea are also apart of the ring. but in my opinion, you can tell she’s not crazy about it bc as soon as aerith mentions it to her she becomes so wildly upset that she breaks character. i don’t think she’s a sell out. i think she’s an exploited and fetishized woman in a tough place, and i feel for her.
despite this, it’s clear that because of his obvious ‘ preference ’ they’re [ wutaians ] held at a higher standard ( i.e., he doesn’t dispose of madam m immediately like he does with every other woman who is unfortunate enough to meet him ), so i’m willing to go out on a limb and say despite the high amount of shinra foot traffic that goes through wall market ( and we know this bc everybody who is everybody from SOLDIERS to Turks go to honeybee inn ), a wutaian would probably be fine there.
> wutai is the strongest world power by natural means. without SOLDIER s & g programs, midgar’s biggest claim to fame is to reach first-world status as a metropolis by siphoning mako via its reactors. without its reactors, the whole town would either be: 1) slums, like below the plate; or 2) as common as every other area in the nearby vicinity ( i.e., kalm, costa del sol, nibelheim ). by siphoning mako energy, midgar truly is unnatural, so... hm... 
corel could have been a contender ‘cause they use fossil fuels ( and look at how successful gold saucer is! ), but the failed reactor really threw them out the loop. costa del sol + icicle inn are both partially shin-ra owned / managed, so i’m not counting them.
> infiltrating midgar / shinra isn’t difficult. nor is navigating throughout the sectors. while there is the mention of the ID scan on the trains, we see this is not applicable on foot ( freely able to walk through sectors 5, 6, 7, and 8 as party; jessie + co are able to go above the plate to go to her parents’ house despite already being listed as AVALANCHE and that their fake IDs had already expired ). given that yufi entirely travels on foot because of her airsickness / motion sickness, she’d be undetectable. also note that the first 59 floors of shinra hq by stairwell are not monitored... and neither was the front door, so she could easily sneak in whenever the need called for it.
> established multiple points of contact between rufus + yufi ( and by extension, the turks + yufi ). i’m really going into this in the next section ‘cause... their dynamic became so much more interesting. but we already know that at minimum, there was contact bc she had the phs rufus had provided to godo + was using it to communicate with zack for treasure.... but let me hold off on this bc there’s one more thing i want to add here.
regarding the turks: it’s established that even if a person is someone of interest to shin-ra, they won’t necessarily act on attacking or abducting immediately ( see: aerith ). we already know they’ve known yufi since she was a child, and if they’re working with rufus they’d know what she looked like as she aged, so the excuse of “ she looks different than when they worked with her in wutai ” is out the window. it’s more than likely that they’re enabling her to continue her business with rufus + have probably assisted her with not being caught. 
> yufi’s clothes are absolutely normal for her age. it always annoyed me that somehow tifa’s clothing was like considered “ impractical but acceptable ” because she’s a legal adult and because cishet men were too drawn to the boobies to complain. but then yufi was either like HELLA sexualized as a minor ( the amount of ecchi / hentai that exists of underage y.uffie despite there being of-age content [ i.e., her portrayals in advent children + dirge of cerberus ] is.......................................... ridonk ) OR she was like hella slut-shamed and i’m out here like.... hello??? what kinda anti-wutai rhetoric is this? anyway. i’d like to call attention to kyrie, who looks like she’s wearing like 60% of y.uffie’s dirge of cerberus outfit. if anything, this only reinforces that yufi’s fashion choices are.......... legit normal, age appropriate, and anyone who wants to argue otherwise can shut the fuck up.
if you’re really gonna ask “ how come her shorts are unbuttoned ” like go check your privilege. the short answer is probably that rufus stole all of her damn belts to make into his coat. the long answer is that a youth traveling the world SOLO she is probably slim on money to be frequently shopping for clothes ? and the clothes that are available in the slums vs on the plate are probably not great quality ( idk if y’all have ever shopped at a freesized open market before but like... buttons pop off INSTANTLY sometimes and those seams will tear if u stretch the wrong way. like fast fashion but like........ hella wild ). she could find better clothes above the plate, but given the anti-wutai rhetoric up there... probably not a wise choice. 
since you’re looking at her outfit anyway.. can i bring your attention to her sweater, and have you note that it’s made of the same material as cloud’s? i.e., she’s wearing shin-ra/SOLDIER brand quality? ( need further proof that it’s SOLDIER? zack and angeal wear the same one ) probably gotten from either a trip to hq or........ someone on the inside............ but obviously cropped to fit her. she might’ve even had it for some time. now let’s keep looking.... i’m willing to bet the latter, and here’s why! ( prepare for galaxy brain time )
now for standard SOLDIERS, they’re assigned colors. we know third class / infantrymen are blue; second class are burgundy / red ( think kunsel ); and black / dark blue for first class. don’t nobody wear green.... in this whole damn universe.... as a main character.... except child y.uffie. HMMMMM. here’s the sweater again to compare. 
i’m just saying.
now, the ideas INTRODUCED to me were:
> there is only one AVALANCHE, but it is splintered into different factions.
now i always wondered like, how come they just picked up the name AVALANCHE when it was established already. like idk i don’t think people would be like “ ah yes we’re the n.azis and we’re different than the other ones, but we wanna evoke the same fear ” u know what i mean?? usually u would carry the same ideology... but it was always so apparent that barret held different views and goals than elfe, so i was always so confused.
but not anymore. now it’s established that they’re the same group, begun in midgar + just carrying out different methods of “ fuckin’ shit up for the shin-ra ” over the last 10 years, spreading the word about the danger of reactors + it’s suckin’ up the lifeblood of the planet to anyone who would hear. now that makes sense. in the same chapter that this is established, however, they also claim...
> yufi as a benefactor to AVALANCHE.
now this shit had me like AAAAAAAAH. now there is no damn way you and i played the same game if u didn’t see this. they literally say “ AVALANCHE is being provided weapons by someone to fuck shit up, in return for all the materia in midgar. ”
who would want all the materia in midgar? HMMMMMMMMM.
> with that point established, let’s go back to rufus + yufi having multiple points of contact. so i already introduced the idea that rufus clearly has to have contact with yufi bc he’s the one spouting all the secrets to shinra treasure via the PHS. and yufi has claimed ownership of the phone by literally labeling it as “ treasure princess ” so there is no question that he thinks he’s talking to godo versus yufi. 
but we also know that rufus is the person behind AVALANCHE. my man has TIME on house arrest, obviously. we also know that he’s on house arrest in junon, not midgar. now, if he’s out here giving them logistics like places to go to spout their rhetoric, and yufi is providing weapons ( remember, wutai is the strongest power by natural means, and apparently hq is free real estate to explore, so she’s got multiple ways to provide gear without it being an inconvenience to her ), so it’s.........pretty obvious to say that the way she would go in connection to AVALANCHE would be through rufus. also, remember she has bad blood with AVALANCHE because of their actions in wutai, so... she’s not gonna be keen about them anyway. it seems much more practical for someone who already views them ( and tbh, lots of people ) as tools ( rufus vc: “ i own you ” ) to accomplish one’s tasks to help her connect with meeting her own goals ( “ all the materia in midgar ” ).
this would also explain why yufi is found hanging outside junon.
if you opted to grab her outside nibelheim... you might argue that it’s because nibelheim is obviously suspicious + truly the evidence at how shady shin-ra is, given the whole place was rebuilt + is filled with actors to hide the fact that the whole place burned to the ground + was once the site of jenova + currently remains the site as hojo’s secondary lab + other secret, vincent valentine with the protomateria slumbering. she could have been tipped off by rufus as “ there’s another treasure here ” but like... there’s no way she would have known it was vincent. even zack is like “ idk wtf is happening here so i’mma leave this alone. ”
also, i love that rufus uses “ heir to the throne ” verbage, which is so akin to yufi also being “ heir to the throne ” & look at them: spiteful children rebelling against their useless ass dads to create new world order + to destroy the old shin-ra company.  i love that for them.
so in conclusion........ this game FED ME. god i wanna play it again and again. i beat it on normal and got everything except 1 treasure and 1 task from chadley. i also need to do all the combat simulators. but given i did what i could in.... 3.5 days, i’m not too upset by it. this game has so much replay value and... i can say i’m glad i bought it twice.
g.amestop give me my freaking shinra badge i’ve damn well earned it.
oh and two more things going forward:
> nanaki continues to sound old as hell. which duh, given advent children. but u know how they established him as a young teen in the og + so it made sense for y.uffie and nanaki to be friends ‘cause they were mentally the same age? i don’t...... see how that works now. 
also.....y’all could have missed me with this shit already but STOP SHIPPING HIM WITH YUFI. NOW UR ONLY ARGUMENT IS GONE. STOP. i saw some art of nanaki & y.uffie fucking in the tags + floating around google and i was like....... WHY!!! and then there’s also weird hybrid art like what if they had a kid or something and i just........  STOP.
i have flashbacks of when i first started writing on tumblr + how i was bombarded by furries wanting to fuck bc of this. like deadass king dedede from kirby. later on i also saw sonic & even alligators ( not an alligator man.... tho i did see king k. rool + donkey kong as well........ i hated y’all for a hot minute ). it’s not even “ monster fucking ” it’s bestiality and I’M BEGGING YOU TO STOP. y’all can truly MISS ME WITH THIS.
however, u know, bigby wolf + everyone from castlevania could easily get it. stardust platinum where ya at. if i had to pick it would be....... more humanoid than a penguin or a “ lab rat dog ” u feel? 
> i am not crazy about y.uffentine. look. i know it exists. i know it was big bc fandom was like “ optional character ship ftw! ” + then dirge of cerberus came out and y’all went wild ( to be fair, i get it, it was the only ship outside of NANAKI and BEING KIDNAPPED/ASSAULTED BY SHINRA SOLDIERS AS A CHILD that people could feasibly comprehend for y.uffie for some reason............................................................... it was an actually “ NORMAL ” person........ ) but like. i’m sorry. it’s not doin it for me. i’ve seen like two other y.uffie blogs out here that actually stick to canon so like if u want your y.uffentine that bad, like maybe ask them. but please don’t ask me.

I accidentally messed up the numbering on part Seven’s link to post six, so if you missed post six (or yesterday’s part seven), the numbering up there is correct.
Wherein we get back out into the galaxy, explore, help some people, and kill some others!
So now that we have Liara, it’s time to really dig into the galaxy.  We have a few people we talked to on the CItadel who need help, and maybe we’ll stumble into a few more things along the way.
First of all, let’s check out the galaxy map...

Heeeey we recognize this place, we’ll get to go there in.... two games!

Can’t land there (or anywhere in the system) but it’s cool that it exists! There are a couple of other neat little things in the system I didn’t screenshot so that you can have a cool new experience yourself if you decide to use the mod on your next playthrough.
What I really miss from ME3, by the way, is the % markers which note when you’ve fully explored a system or if there’s more stuff to find there.
Anyway, my PLAN had been to take a screenshot of each planet or spacecraft before I entered it to help orient the playthrough better, and then the non-screenshotting couple of hours happened, so we lost some of that along the way, sorry.  
Still, let’s see what kind of trouble we can get ourselves into.

Another planet, scanned a few things, not sure what we’re doing here but hey, I found a lone building!
Ah yes, a prefab which is totally different from all the prefabs we’ll enter because the creates are stacked in a different configuration.
Honestly they should have put one of these prefabs in ME3 for Old Times Sake. (The ones that actually look like homes/labs/whatever make so much more sense.)

This guy thought he could sneak past me.  Well me, my shotgun and my 20 shield strength sure showed him.
ME1 combat is so... messy though.  I mean, I honestly still enjoy it, but I’m in the camp that agrees combat gets better every game, Andromeda included.  Of course, I just REALLY LOVE Vanguarding in ME3... charging into a group of enemies, hitting Nova, spamming charge again praying that I’ll find a good target to charge to in time.  ME1 combat is basically all just... spam abilities from cover and hope your companions are doing something useful.  Being a Vanguard is more about style over substance in ME here.  I mean you do get some really useful abilities, but your shotgun isn’t that much use unless things get too close.
Which, you know, they do pretty often.
Anyway, remember... I WILL DESTROY YOU!!!

FUCK I hadn’t been back to the Citadel to pick up Nassana Dantius’ quest yet.  Let’s just reload the quicksave from outside and we’ll... come back and do this the right way later and see the entire quest.
I do this more often than I care to admit.
Also no screenshot for this but... I also found Wrex’s personal quest planet and recognized it only when I saw the building, since it’s in a pretty memorable location.  Still, grabbed everything else off the planet so it’ll be quick when it’s time to go back and do that quest.
Well let’s go back to poking around the galaxy.

Before the ME2 DLC Arrival came out, Hackett was one of Mass Effect’s biggest mysteries.  Who is this guy?  Why is he telling us to do things?  Does he have some secret agenda?  Why is he so sketchy?  Our Shepards seemed to trust him but WOW he sure did send us on some touchy missions.  Speculation was all over the place on what he looked like and what he was really doing.
Turns out, he’s just a pretty cool guy who wants you to take on all the secret spy missions the Alliance doesn’t want to take credit for.
I wish I’d saved it, but just a week or two ago I saw a pretty great post circulating about Hackett.  He IS the guy that’s going to make sure a job gets done, even if he’s not going to do it himself.  He’s the back-room Admiral with the squeaky clean image up front.  He’s the Gus Fring of the Alliance.
Also getting Lance Riddick to voice him was great.  Just a real authoritative, steady guy who you actually want to trust.  
And it turns out he looks basically exactly like most people thought, but maybe with a few more scars. (I mean, he really looks a lot like Lance Riddick, tbh)  But we don’t know that yet.  For now, let the mystery be.

Ah yeah, Chairman Burns, we do negotiate with terrorists, in this case.  But they needed negotiating with.
Maxing out the Paragon-meter is worth it for moments like this.  These guys have probably suffered and it’s no surprise that no one has really listened.  Sounds like a lot about the galaxy hasn’t changed since we got out there.
This is also an excellent moment for Kaidan.

Being able to let Kaidan reason with them is fantastic.  Although he probably ultimately doesn’t make a difference mechanics wise, it’d be nice if maybe the check is easier if he’s here.  I don’t know.  But Kaidan knows, even if he’s one of the “lucky” ones who “only” gets migraines.  
One of the grossest posts I’ve seen about Kaidan are people who argue she shouldn’t be on the team because of his implants and since he has a “disability”.  Or that it’s “kinder” to sacrifice him on Virmire.  That’s some real gross ablism you’ve got there.  
Anyway, I love being able to keep this situation under control. Burns actually comes through if you do, even if those guys probably go to prison for awhile for terrorism.  Better than being dead.

Oh there’s a camp up ahead, we’re here to find the remaining crew of a crashed ship for our new friend in the Citadel Tower.  
Again, no footage/screenshot but eventually you find where the mercenaries tracked down Willem (the brother) and killed them.  Shit.  We were too late.  I actually tear up sometimes telling Garoth that his brother died.  They held out for awhile, too, but we were too late.
It would have been nice if, say, if the very first thing we did after leaving the Citadel was to come here, we could have saved him, but I guess this quest is another way of Bioware telling us that sometimes, there’s just nothing you can do to change things.
One more quest this update, then we’re stopping back off at the Citadel next.

Klendagon's most striking feature is, of course, the Great Rift valley that stretches across the southern hemisphere. What is most fascinating about the Rift is that it does not appear to be natural. The geological record suggests it is the result of a "glancing blow" by a mass accelerator round of unimaginable destructive power. This occurred some thirty-seven million years ago.
It took a solid three minutes of Flycam flying to get that closeup shot, btw.  I actually flew all the way in the first time I came here, and didn’t take screenshots.  Took about six minutes.  The updated texture is impressive.

I’ll admit, before I came in here, I decided to cheat in enough paragon points to max out Paragon already.  For me personally, I’m trying to make sure this is an “ultimate” playthrough, a save file I can just use over and over from here on out.  I want everything to import into ME3 the first time around with all the plot flags set how I want them without messing with Gibbed’s Savegame Editor, so making sure I can convince everyone how I want them to is important.  So hey, Major Kyle, stand down.
I don’t think I’ve ever played as a Ruthless Shepard in ME1, or if I have, it’s been so long I’ve forgotten how it goes.  But he was the commanding officer at the battle of Torfan, and your CO if you’re Ruthless.  He’s also a reminder of how serious PTSD can be, and what it can do to a person.  
I also love this tidbit from the Wiki, which I didn’t know since I’d never done these particular choices before:
(In Mass Effect 2)  If Martin Burns was not saved in 2183, a news report on the Citadel will announce that Kyle is trying to form an all-biotic community as the reparations were not given to L2 biotics and they have become even more alienated from galactic society.

The scent of burning flesh fills her nostrils. Tifa takes a deep breath and tries to hold it in as they pass through the ashes and debris around them. Her hands are still shaking, the sight of what was once Midgar shattering something inside her. It nearly brings her to tears, nearly renders her weak on her knees, especially when she sees the incinerated bodies nearby, the outlines of human remains; men, women, children...children. She almost wants to run away from it all, to shield herself from the death surrounding her. However, running would be denying this tragedy, denying the lives that were lost. So she summons forth the courage she had been harboring before the final fight. The fact that they're living at all is one she should be grateful for.
But, she can't help but allow painful memories to flood into her head.
Nibelheim burning down.
Her father's bloody chest.
Jessie, Wedge and Biggs perishing under Sector 7's plate.
Aerith's shaking lips when Sephiroth's sword sliced through her.
And Cloud, falling… always falling.
Cloud.
Cloud.
"Tifa?"
His hand is on hers, Mako-enhanced eyes scrutinizing her out of concern for she had suddenly stopped walking, absentmindedly focusing her attention on a big block of concrete ten feet away from where she stood.
Barret waits meters ahead while he observes them, always the big papa bear. And though his face is a picture of pure rage, she knows that his heart is aching as well. Even when he curses under his breath.
Midgar was their home.
It is then when she realizes exactly where she's standing. The neon lights of Seventh Heaven's sign flashes stubbornly, though a few leads are broken. She almost smiles with relief and runs over, hastily opening the door with hope flickering in her heart only to find the sun's light shining mockingly on dust covered floors; broken chairs littering the establishment, shards of glass gathering over the shelves she had once judiciously kept neat and clean.
Wait, this isn't right.
She blinks and the illusion suddenly vanishes. Tifa sighs sadly when she realizes that she had just imagined seeing Seventh Heaven. She bends down to pick the sign off the floor. "Seven Seas". The nautical theme stands out to her this time. It was a restaurant, one that wasn't exempt from all the destruction around them.
She hears him call out to her yet stays rooted in her spot, holding the tears at bay, trying with all her might to not be seen crying.
She had been feeling like this ever since their party disbanded; when the rest of their friends decided to return home. It was just her, Barret and Cloud again. And because all the excitement, fear, and adrenaline had been flushed from her system the moment her last fist had landed on Sephiroth, Tifa could not help but mourn over the loss they've suffered since it all began.
Her heart had always been kept locked away from the others. She never wanted them to see her waver like this. Now, with the realization of the consequences of their past actions, and the grief upon having Midgar perish because of it; because of the sins of the terrorist group she was a part of, she just couldn't hold it together.
His hand settles on her shoulder then.
"Tifa."
His voice acts as an anchor to keep her in the present, to keep her here, with him, before she disappears along with the ghosts of the past inhabitants of the broken city. She can't stop herself anymore, so she launches herself into his arms, shaking as she finally lets her tears fall.
Barret rests against the door while he lets her empty all her tears.
He watches as she cracks in front of them..

Cloud holds onto her hand after that. And as they continue to navigate their way through all the rubble, Tifa shyly accepts the comfort. A merchant on a run down jeep tells them that there is a refugee camp nearby.
"It's about seventeen miles to the North."
She tries not to dwell too much on the fact that his eyes looked dead as he tells them that they've got lots of room; noting the subtlety of his implication that there are only a few survivors.
Her childhood friend's grip tightens around her own as they bid the kind stranger goodbye, reassuring her that everything is going to be alright. She glances straight ahead, squinting her eyes while she looks towards the direction they were pointed to. Though ashes fall around, the brightness of the sun bears down harshly over all of them and she begrudgingly wishes for a cold shower right now. It had been so long since she's been given the time to cleanse her body of the dirt and grime that comes with combat.
She used to be conscious about this fact when they first started their adventures. As time went on and she had been able to trade giggles with Aerith, the flower girl's opinion had been one that erased any insecurities she had.
"If you think you smell, Tifa, then I gotta be honest, those men stink even more."
Their laughter echoes on in her head, reminding her that even though Aerith is no longer with them, she had left them precious memories with her. That, is another thing to be grateful for. A hint of a smile comes to her face.
"Finally."
"Hm?"
Cloud has halted his steps and now stands to her right as he observes her gently.
"You haven't smiled in a while."
She wants to point out that neither has he, but decides against it.
"I suppose I haven't. There's nothing to smile about right now."
"You're right. This isn't like you though."
It would probably irritate someone else for this kind of thing to be pointed out, but this is Cloud Strife here. This is her man. She blushes a deep red at the thought. Did she just say her man? Could she even claim him as such? Their actions the night before their battle at the Northern Crater had been magical. And if she was being honest, it probably meant so much more to her.
"I think I'll meet her there."
He had almost died, yet when he had snapped out of it, his first thoughts were about meeting Aerith again. It wasn't that she was jealous or anything. Or perhaps she was. She would be lying if she said that seeing them connect in that way never sprung forth this feeling of loneliness inside her; as if she wasn't part of that light conversation they were having.
Even if she truly loved Aerith with all her heart.
Perhaps Cloud loved her as well?
In a way a lover would?
In the way he marked her as his own that night? He had been so eager, so passionate, so attentive to her needs.
So...
She blushes again.
It had been amazing.
Still, she doesn't know what it all means anyway.
She drowns those thoughts away and starts to smile again. She knows that he can read her face without asking further but is sure that he won't push if it seemed like she doesn't want to talk about it.
He must've decided on letting go of the fact that she had just faked her smile.
"What am I like then?"
It's his turn to look flustered. Tifa wonders if it's his boyish charm coming out but she finds it cute when he puts a hand to his chin and gives a far-off look.
"You're strong, and optimistic. You're everyone's strength, Tifa."
She hums in reply, eyes also drifting away out of bashfulness.
"Don't worry."
Her attention goes back to the world's hero.
Her hero.
"I'll be here to remind you of who you are."
Her hand is in his again, and he doesn't say anything else before he resumes their trek. Barret has been calling out to them for a while now.
She doesn't know what to say to that. He had her heart racing with that proclamation.

"Shinra?"
"Yes."
The concierge smiles kindly while he guides them around the hotel. Like the merchant had said, they had a lot of rooms available; though the once grand building has been modified to suit refugees who have come from nearby; food packages and a soup kitchen had been set up to cater to everyone's needs. As it turns out, most of the donations came from the Shinra Company.
It baffles her because she swears that they were always up to no good. Then again, being presented with the possibility of the world ending can make people reconsider. Even Reeve had changed his mind before all this.
Barret huffs at the news and crosses his arms in front of him. It is already late into the night, and they have been walking for nearly twenty hours before they finally arrived here. She recognizes that look on his face. He isn't planning to stay.
Cloud must have seen the defeated slump of her shoulders because he doesn't hesitate in his decision.
"We'll be staying the night."
Both men merely stare at each other.
Tifa wonders if they're about to argue. However, Barret backs down immediately, probably sensing the futility of it all.
"I thought as much. Tifa looks beaten."
"She stayed behind too long."
"I know."
The Avalanche founder turns to her and walks over to ruffle her hair. He hasn't done that in a while.
"You need to rest."
"But you…"
"Don't even protest, coz Spiky here won't have it if I let you travel any further tonight."
"I am not weak."
"We know you're not, Teef. We just want you to rest."
Cloud's concerned voice is enough to let her release a sigh. Honestly, they were right anyway. She wanted to shower so badly. And the prospect of sleeping on a soft bed tonight isn't one she wants to pass on.
"I heard that they're building a new city nearby, we can meet there once I get Marlene."
It sounded like a temporary plan. Nonetheless, it was good enough.
"Fine. Barret, do you really not want to rest first?"
"You know why kid, I am not past it yet."
And that is how he leaves them, giving them a thumbs up as he exits the establishment while he flashes Cloud a look of suspicion once they are left alone.
"So that will be two rooms then?"
They had forgotten about the concierge staring awkwardly at them through the exchange. Tifa almost nods her head but Cloud beats her to it.
"Just one."

The door closes shut behind him. Cloud leans his sword against the wall and bends down to pour a glass of water for both of them. The soup that was served had eggs in it. It was diluted and had way too much salt, even so, it had satisfied their hunger.
The room is small but it would suffice, and with its own bathroom as well as a tiny deck up front, Tifa thinks that it's a luxury and wonders sheepishly if her blond companion had managed to sneak in some gil for them to be upgraded. It might seem selfish considering that there are others seeking help here. Of course, humanity can never let go of greed.
It doesn't surprise her in the least when they are rewarded with perks once they have presented the money. Still though, it is a welcomed comfort she plans to enjoy while she can. She immediately grabs a towel on the bed, eyes trying to veer away from the fact that it is a queen sized one, bigger than the usual hotel beds they stayed in during their travels.
"Cloud, you don't mind if I go in first, right?"
He nods his head and Tifa wastes no time in getting in and turning the tap on to bask in the shower's spray over her figure. Nothing like a bath to calm the nerves down.

"Cloud?"
She wonders if she's dreaming, the warmth of the sheets on her skin had provided her with so much comfort that as soon as she laid her worn out body against the smooth cotton, she couldn't help but drift off. Scarlet eyes clear, the blurriness of the room's light fades away. And it is then when she realizes that, no, she isn't dreaming.
Cloud is leaning over her, hands settling on both sides of her body while hers are spread out beside her head, palms facing up, fingers curled as she regards him with careful consideration. The droplets of water from his wet strands fall onto her cheeks, causing her to shiver while she waits for his reply.
He says nothing, lowering himself down to meet her lips halfway, pausing a few inches from her, giving her the incentive to close the distance herself. So she kisses him with all the want she has, feeling an amount of relief when he moans into her mouth and deepens it to push his tongue in as he tangles it with hers.
He is confident this time, so unlike the man who had timidly said that he didn't know what to say. She guesses that he had taken what she had said to heart. That words aren't the only way to tell someone how you're feeling. She lets him communicate to her in his own way. ☆ ━━━ Cloud finds himself standing before the lone, wrought-iron entrance to his village Nibelheim. Masking his panic is his hard plastic helmet and the visor that hides his blue eyes, reflecting the dim, sparse town back out to the world--a cruel reflection of the dying place his village has become over the years. Being here now, he can hear the endless taunts from the other children, as if he is seven years old again, mad at the world and wishing, praying he would be strong enough one day to punish them. He never wants to hear their cruel laughter again. He’s terrified he might hear it now in front of Sephiroth and Zack.
His breath fogs up his visor as it comes out in quick, humid puffs, his stomach aching from the intensity of his worry.
It seems like awful irony that, of all the places to have a failing, chaotic Mako Reactor... it would be his hometown, which never had anything interesting happen to it except having the Reactor built in the first place. It is a place on the verge of collapse and it seems more obvious as he stands here after returning from a few years at the SOLDIER program. It embarrasses him that this is the place he calls home--even the trees with their green needles look pathetic, as if they could topple over from the slightest breeze. 
Still, Sephiroth mentions that only one guard need stand out on duty and he dismisses the rest of them. 
There’s only one place he can go.
Cloud only takes off his helmet once the door clicks close behind him.
His boots clatter over the hardwood of his childhood home. Everything is as he remembers it--the house smells of woody plants and fragrant teas, the latter which his mother always had brewing up at all times of the day, claiming the drink contained healing powers and all sorts of fanciful benefits. It makes his heart ache and all his frustrations come welling up, huge and obvious in his bright eyes that shine and find the woman he knows by the stove.
He isn’t even sure how to greet his own mother...
All that comes out is a sputtered, “Uh?”
And she turns, blonde wisps of hair glimmering in the weak sunlight filtering in through the windows. Her eyes crinkle in confusion for a moment as she shuffles forward, unsure of this man suddenly in her home. 
“Yes?” She asks, her voice soft.
She looks at him then, really sees this sad young man before her--watches his shoulders hunch, the hurt shimmering there on his face. She’s seen that look a million times--when Cloud fell down when he was an infant, when the other children punched him. 
“Cloud!?” She gasps, taking only a moment to collect the whirlwind of emotions flitting over her pretty features. “Welcome home, Cloud!”
He rubs the back of his head, hair still sticky and flat from the helmet he wore for so long. 
Finally, he manages a soft, shameful, “Hi, mom.”

“Come, come, let me take a look at you!” She says as she hovers over him while he sits on the steps.
She doesn’t like what she sees--his spirit is broken, but he hides it on a blank face, scared to tell her how weak he truly is. How can he tell his mother that he’s only a pitiful grunt, fetching coffees and standing out in the cold most nights, yearning for his bed far off? He can’t admit it--even as her eyes are wide and trained on him, that same pleading glimmer in her eyes just like the years before, when he refused to tell her about the bullies or the loneliness. That same youthful fear is inside him now, panicked and hurt. 
“Hmmm...” She says, trying to find something to make him smile. And she says, the ways mother’s do in a small offering of kindness, “You look so handsome.”
She wheels to face him directly, smiling lightly despite the shame and terror painted on his face. Despite the sadness lingering all around him--it’s the only thing she knows to do, but she never knows if it’s the right thing to do. She can only hope it is enough for her son and, maybe, he would forgive her one day for her lack of wisdom and insight into such brokenness she can never heal. 
“So, this is a SOLDIER uniform?” She asks brightly, hoping this might clear the rainy expression from his eyes. 
But it doesn’t, in fact he seems on the verge of shattering completely, crying when he least wants to--if he does, it will prove how weak all his superiors say he is. A weak child trying to play a big game of war for no reason, no purpose but a silly dream of strength to drive him. And he wants to tell his mom that, dammit, a simple dream it isn’t enough!
He isn’t enough.
But all that comes out is a hushed, bitter, “...Mom, I...”
( “I’m not a SOLDIER.” )

He’s lying on his old bed, staring at the beams that span their vaulted ceiling above. He’s just waiting for his shift to start, hoping to escape somewhere, away from SOLDIER. Away from here. 
His mother seems desperate to reach him, but he’s cast out too far.
“My, how you’ve grown,” she tells him with bubbling warmth, still buzzing around him--she could never control her nerves, her mind endlessly tittering as she worries over Cloud. She twitters, “I’ll bet the girls never leave you alone.”
And Cloud wants to laugh bitterly out loud. He hardly sees anyone at all, much less girls. There’s just powerful men telling him to polish guns and shine floors and break down these doors so they can march cleanly through, their fingers never getting a speck of dust on them, the blood all on his hands. 
“...Not really,” he tells her, as close to the truth as he can manage.
This is the only opening she needs, “...I’m worried about you.”
And Cloud doesn’t face his mother even now. His gaze remains fixed elsewhere, anywhere else than at her brutal honesty and love. 
“There are a lot of temptations in the city...” She goes on, hushed and breathy. “I’d feel a lot better if you just settled down with a nice girlfriend.”
All the things she should have said when he left are being flung out at him, but he ignores the words. They’re too late.
“...I’m all right,” he lies just as softly.
“You should have... an older girlfriend, one that’ll take care of you. I think that would be best for you.” Stay here, she is saying, but he doesn’t understand that.
“I’m not interested.”

“Are you eating right?” She asks as she stirs a creamy soup in a large bubbling pot, the aroma intense and spicy, yet tangy like onions and herbs. 
His stomach growls. 
“I’m all right,” he says again, shrugging off her growing worries. “The Company takes care of me.”
“Is that so?” She asks suddenly, turning around to face him. There’s an intensity there, one he doesn’t like--it doesn’t suit his mother’s bright disposition, like clouds covering an otherwise sunny day. “I know you can’t cook... I’ve been worried sick about you.”
Later, he would wish he had more to say to that--he will wish his mouth had parted and he told her how scared he was of running from ShinRa, what they might do to him or even her... and the terrible things they ask him to do, the rebels he saw slaughtered...

“Cloud?”

“You know, Cloud...”

“...Isn’t that right, Cloud?”

                                     “I’ll always be your mother.”

And then, days later, his mother will die by Sephiroth’s burning hate. Her house will catch fire abruptly and she will become trapped inside. Just as she’s pushing through the smoke and trying to not scream and panic, not just throw herself on the floor in a ball of rage and hopelessness, the roof collapses. She is crushed, her skin--once shining and only slightly crinkled from days out in her humble garden--will char and flake away. Her hair will go up in smoke, smoldering even after most of her skin goes out. 
( “Mom, I want to leave SOLDIER. I’m scared.
                  ...What if something happens to you...
                             ...And you leave me too?” )
There’s so much he will never be able to tell her.
