The New York State Urban Development Corporation saw in the piers a sacrificial milieu of impurity and devaluation. Rivera described the event as follows: “It’s called a sweep. Not even a fucking eviction. A sweep, like we’re trash.” [...]
The clearance operation of the piers took place under the New York Slum Clearance Commission and Law and its frothy utopian verbiage of “sanitizing” an environment [...] unsuitable for human life. [...] The demolition of the piers showed the violent clash of two confronting forms of urbanism. [...] [Manhattan’s] working class industrial base was transformed into a corporate and service-based economy and New York State Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller, together with city planners, implemented policies to frame Manhattan as a place for work, but not living. [...] At the same time, these discussions were imbricated with racial depictions and xenophobic targets: most of the constructions beleaguered in this operation were inhabited or used by black people, Latin Americans, migrants, and displaced communities. [...]
---
The piers thrived with life. [...]
The notion of the piers as insalubrious areas that needed to be wiped out gained traction in the 1980s -- during the peak of the HIV/AIDS crisis [...]. This narrative concerning the piers was active in New York City until the early 2000s, until Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Governor George Pataki opened the Greenwich Village segment of Hudson River Park on May 30, 2003. The highway was finally demolished [...] and a series of gates were erected to keep Pier 45 closed after 1am [...]. The previous residents of these spaces were just routine casualties.
The new proposal opted for a unitary, straightforward, apparently open but constantly surveilled set of facilities, where constant circulation (by car, skate, bike, foot) was central, and framed the conception of the piers as a passing point. This contrasted the labyrinthic and fragmented former setting, with multitudes of hidden spaces that provided a sense of privacy and safety [...].
---
Members of these groups were ostracized and deprived of typical considerations during the outbreak of an epidemic: protocols of announcement, transparency in information, research, and measure-taking. Meanwhile, the communities that congregated around the piers, and the piers themselves, helped spread information about AIDS, made transparent the available data, and offered care among affected communities. [...]
This environmental activism, where kin was formed [...], happened in places like the piers. [...] They were an escape from the constant scrutiny of authorities and from homophobic attacks [...].
---
GRID (Gay Related Immune Deficiency), as well as the common “gay plague” and “gay cancer” epithets, strengthened the idea of a specifically gay disease related to a certain environment-specific villain. Journalists, following the views of public health authorities, blamed the epidemic on [...] the places gay people frequented. [...] Physicians thus described a spatial configuration located in downtown Manhattan [...] which [...] posed a threat [...]. This claim had terrible consequences for the activist spaces and urban fabrics that confronted the epidemic [...]. The remnants of Pier 45 were demolished. The activist history of these places was “cleared.” [...]
---
When Sylvia Rivera shouted to the authorities “stay away from my house!” while being evicted, “house” not only referred to the physical construction of her home. She was confronting teleological progress with the project of a[n] [...] assemblage based on [...] mutual caring [...] and defying colonial narratives of race, sex, gender, and nature. The territorialization of epidemics, identities, and citizenship not only shape the built environment, but the built environment shapes them in return. Architecture thereby assumed the form of an expanded spatial practice [...].
When Rivera was trying to save her home from demolition, she said, “there’s so many fucking buildings in this fucking Manhattan.”
What New York City was losing with the demolition of Pier 45 was not just a series of dwellings. It was losing a complex ecosystem of coexistence.

Barnaby Edwards - Derek Jarman
(charcoal on toned card, 2023)
Derek Jarman (1942-1994) was a British artist, writer, designer, activist, and one of the most significant filmmakers of his generation. Training at the Slade School of Fine Art, Jarman’s early works were experimental 8mm arthouse shorts. Moving into feature films, he initially made his name as a production designer, working on Ken Russell’s The Devils (1971), before making his directorial debut with Sebastiane (1976), which made waves with its Latin dialogue and its bold homoeroticism, making it one of the first films to present gay sexuality in an unflinching and positive light. Jarman’s credentials as a pioneer of British cinema during the punk era were burnished by Jubilee (1978) and The Tempest (1979), and as he began to find a wider audience, his projects continued to alight on queer subject matter: they included Caravaggio (1986), Edward II (1991) and Wittgenstein (1993). Jarman’s status as a darling of the British avant-garde led to numerous collaborations with other artists, including music videos for the likes of Marc Almond, The Smiths, Suede, and perhaps most famously the Pet Shop Boys, whose Jarman commissions included the video for their chart-topping classic ‘It’s a Sin’. A tireless champion of gay rights, a trailblazing political campaigner during the early years of the HIV epidemic, and above all a much-loved artist, Jarman’s death from an AIDS-related illness at the early age of 52 deprived the arts world of one of its most compelling talents.
Other films include: The Angelic Conversation (1985), The Last of England (1987), War Requiem (1989), Blue (1993)

Illuminated Manuscripts
Tumblr media
“Christ Kneeling in Prayer in the Garden of Gethsemene” (c. 1475 France, Loire Valley)
Illuminated manuscripts embody the extraordinary union of beauty and knowledge.
Though the art of making them disappeared with the advent of the printing press, the most spectacular manuscripts survived the ages.
Here are 8 masterworks of medieval illumination: 🧵
1. The Morgan Crusader Bible, 13th century
Tumblr media
Commissioned by French King Louis IX, the Morgan Crusader Bible depicts events from the Hebrew Bible set in the scenery and attire of 13th-century France — it puts a medieval twist on Old Testament stories.
Consisting of 46 folios, the manuscript displays illustrations accompanied by text written in either Latin, Persian, Arabic, or Hebrew.
The vivid colors and attention to detail make it one of the most popular illuminated manuscripts.
2. The Black Hours, 15th century
Tumblr media
The Black Hours is a book of hours (a type of prayer book) created in Bruges, Belgium.
The style is in imitation of Wilhelm Vrelant, the most popular illuminator of the period and constructed of vellum (calfskin) that’s been dyed pitch black.
Gold and blue paint overlay the dark background to create an almost otherworldly look.
Written in silver and gold ink, the text lists the prayers to be said while depictions of Bible stories aid the reader in meditation.
3. Book of Kells, 9th century
Tumblr media
Among the most iconic medieval manuscripts is the Book of Kells.
Created in a Columban monastery, the text is the pinnacle of early medieval calligraphy and illumination.
The graphics are a blend of insular art (the post-Roman era style of art popular in Irish monasteries) and traditional Christian iconography.
Plants, animals, Celtic knots, and biblical figures decorate the 680 page volume to tell the story of Jesus’ life.
4. Codex Argenteus, 6th century
Tumblr media
Latin for “Silver Book,” the Codex Argenteus contains the four gospels written in Gothic, making it one of the world’s foremost sources for the now-extinct language.
The book was likely written as a gift for Ostrogothic king, Theodoric the Great.
The work is particularly striking due to its purple-stained vellum pages, metallic ink, and silver binding. Looks almost Tolkienesque…
5. Acre Bible, 13th Century
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another work commissioned by Louis IX, the Acre Bible was compiled shortly after the king’s release from captivity during the disastrous 7th crusade.
Upon returning to France, he deposited the masterwork in his newly built Sainte-Chapelle library.
It contains 19 books of the Old Testament, and its illustrations are considered masterpieces of crusader art.
6. The Aberdeen Bestiary, 12-13th century
Tumblr media
A bestiary is essentially an encyclopedia of animals and mythical beasts.
They gained popularity throughout the Middle Ages as readers could learn about exotic animals or mythical creatures.
This one was owned by Henry VIII and features a retelling of the Genesis creation story with fantastical images of creatures both real and imagined.
7. The Very Rich Hours of the Duke of Berry, 15th century
Tumblr media
The best surviving example of the International Gothic style of illumination, it’s one of the most lavishly designed late-medieval manuscripts and contains well over 100 illustrations.
Despite beautiful scenes covering most of its pages, the work didn’t shy away from darker imagery.
8. The Berthold Sacramentary, 13th century
Tumblr media
Commissioned by the abbot of Weingarten Abbey, this manuscript is a form of missal called a sacramentary used by priests for liturgical services.
A sacramentary gives the priest's readings and prayers for the Mass. This one is a paragon of Romanesque art.

Chinese firms are approaching global expansion by leveraging social commerce strategies in 2023
Tumblr media
The trend of online shopping is projected to accelerate over the next five years in the global market. Driven by the pandemic, consumers worldwide have continued to shop for products online in 2022. Improved logistical infrastructure, access to cheaper products, and wider internet penetration are among the various factors that will keep aiding the growth of the online commerce industry in 2023. To capitalize on the growing market worldwide, Chinese firms are approaching global expansion by leveraging social commerce strategies.
Both Shein and Temu, two of the Chinese e-commerce platforms, are seeking to make rapid inroads in the global market by expanding operations in countries like New Zealand, Australia, and Latin America. PPD Holdings, which owns Temu, announced that the firm will roll out its cross-border e-commerce platform in Australia and New Zealand in March 2023. Shein, on the other hand, is actively hiring for various positions in Mexico, Brazil, Ireland, Belgium, and Turkey.
Both Temu and Shein are trying to build a business model that is centered around the idea of offering low-priced goods and products to consumers. The strategy has allowed both of these e-commerce giants to record rapid growth. Temu, for instance, has gained widespread traction among North American shoppers with its low-priced strategy. Higher inflation and the rising cost of living meant that more shoppers were looking for discounted offerings, aiding the growth of Temu in the United States and Canada.
With its launch in Australia and New Zealand, Temu is expected to follow the same strategy of providing consumers with low-priced items compared to other e-commerce marketplaces. To attract sellers in the two Oceanian countries, Temu also announced that it will exempt merchants from commission and guarantee fees. Furthermore, the online shopping service will also make the goods listed for shoppers in North America available to consumers in Australia and New Zealand. For Shein as well, offering low-priced items will be the way forward to penetrate the Latin American and other global markets in 2023.
Read More - TikTok fails to attract merchants in the United States for its shopping service
In addition to their low-priced strategy, both Temu and Shein are expected to spend heavily on marketing and promotional campaigns to build awareness and drive penetration among consumers in these newer markets. In the United States, Temu ran a Super Bowl commercial to accelerate its penetration and awareness among online shoppers in the North American market.
Alongside their strategy of low-priced items and marketing spending, Temu and Shein do not depend on local infrastructure. This has allowed the two e-commerce giants to expand rapidly in the global market. Temu, for instance, allows Chinese vendors to sell to shoppers in these global markets. These vendors ship products directly to international customers with the need of storing products in warehouses in the United States, even though the firm is based in a North American country.
Read More - Social commerce has emerged as a new way to reach millions of online shoppers from smaller cities in India
In 2023, both of these e-commerce firms are expected to increase their focus on social commerce initiatives to drive growth in the newer international markets. For Temu, the shift in business model from e-commerce to social commerce will be part of the strategy to replicate the success in China.
Through Pinduoduo and the community group buying strategy, PDD Holdings has gained widespread traction among online shoppers in the Chinese market. Consequently, in 2023, PayNXT360 expects Temu to adopt the community group buying strategy to further accelerate its growth in the North American markets and the Oceanian countries, where it launched in March 2023.
Shein has also recorded strong growth in the global market by investing in digital marketing and social commerce initiatives. Consequently, PayNXT360 expects the firm to further increase its investment in the area of influencer marketing and social commerce from the short to medium-term perspective, as part of its strategy to gain market share in Latin America and other countries.
For Shein, localized initiatives are also expected to play a significant role in its global expansion, in 2023. Especially, in the Latin American region, the firm is expected to partner with local brands to accelerate its expansion in countries like Brazil and Mexico. Kuaishou, another Chinese-based social commerce firm, has adopted a localization strategy to expand market share in the Latin American region in 2022. In other markets, like the ones in Europe, Shien is expected to adopt a marketplace strategy to compete with the likes of Amazon and other players in the category.
Read More - Food delivery platforms are launching new features and tools to boost customer retention in 2023
While both of these firms are seeking to rapidly expand their presence in the global market, their connection to China is expected to lead to concerns surrounding data privacy and security. Similar to the ones that have been raised with respect to TikTok and its connection with the Chinese government. Consequently, as these firms continue to grow and expand their global presence, PayNXT360 expects that the scrutiny of these firms will also increase from the short to medium-term perspective. In India, Shein has been already banned from conducting operations owing to concerns regarding national security.
Regardless of the growing scrutiny on the Chinese e-commerce and social commerce firms, both Shein and Temu are expected to make further inroads in the global online shopping sector in 2023 and social commerce initiatives are expected to be a major growth driver for these firms from the short to medium-term perspective. As a result, PayNXT360 maintains a positive growth outlook for the global social commerce market over the next three to four years.

Saludos Amigos (1943)
Saludos Amigos is the first film in Walt Disney’s Wartime Era. As the name implies, this era is inclusive of movies produced during World War II, which are reflective of that time period in both content and quality. The movie has earned an 80% score from Rotten Tomatoes, nearly twice as much as the audience reviews. It is also the shortest film in Disney feature film history at forty-two minutes in length.
Saludos Amigos was constructed during World War II for a very distinct reason: to improve relations between Latin America and the United States during the conflict. The film was actually commissioned by the United States Department of State as a part of the Good Neighbor Policy. It is obvious that the animators utilized this as an opportunity to improve their animating skills, having segments focusing on slow motion, physics, and speed painting. Additionally, in light of recent tragic events associated with the war, the movie was intentionally made to be very uplifting and colorful, emphasizing the beauty of the world around us. After this period in time Disney movies become noticeably more colorful overall, which can likely be attributed to the first steps of this movie. That being said, the film is disappointingly short and disorganized, the scenes switching from one to another with little to no transition period or congruence. Additionally, the ending cuts off so abruptly that I did not notice it at first, the audience left expecting more. Finally, the movie is also exceptionally dated. Despite being reminiscent of its time period, it is arguably irrelevant now. The film is fun and interesting but holds little merit for someone unconcerned with history and its intersecting importance with animation (which I am, but that is besides the point).
In conclusion, Saludos Amigos is an antiquated piece that explores Latin America through a fun-loving touristic perspective and colorful animation. Overall, Saludos Amigos receives 4 out of 10 stars from me, a disappointing score, especially considering how fond I was of this film as a child. This score was negatively impacted by its dated portrayals, nonexistent plotline, abrupt ending, and shortness (as well as not even coming close to passing the Bechdel test), despite its merits as an animated work of art and beautiful color (sometimes). The movie’s music was lacking and did nothing to aid the final score, inevitably deducting an additional point.
Summary of the film under the cut.
Saludos Amigos is a compilation of shorts featuring a tour around key points in Latin America, specifically Peru, Chile, Argentina, and Brazil (in that order). The film features both animated and live action elements, though not simultaneously, and is narrated by Walt Disney himself. It opens with Disney sending their animators over Latin America, splitting them between Lake Titicaca and Aconcagua, the highest peak in the Andes Mountains. The first of four shorts features Donald Duck as the protagonist, exploring Lake Titicaca and a nearby village. He fools around — accidentally destroying a boat, riding a llama and failing miserably, almost falling off a bridge, and observing the people that live nearby. The scene cuts away to another short, the story of three mail delivery planes: Papa Plane, Mama Plane, and Pedro, their son. Papa Plane gets sick, so his son has to deliver the mail across the Andes, an intimidating journey. Pedro is seen struggling and nearly dying but surviving and retrieving the mail nevertheless. The next short stars Goofy as Disney narrates a description of the gaucho subculture through animated examples. Goofy demonstrates Argentinian dances as well as bird-hunting and horseback riding. The final short introduces a new character, José Carioca, a Brazilian parrot. After the animators “paint on” the scenery with an animated paintbrush, they introduce Donald Duck once again. They then construct José. Donald and José take a short tour of Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro, landing at a cafe and learning more about samba as they go. The film ends shortly thereafter with little closing.

Directing Funds to Rights - Charapa Consult (Report)
Tumblr media
A commitment of 1.7 billion USD was made by a group of donors at COP 26 to aid indigenous peoples and local communities in tropical and subtropical forests. However, a year has passed, and these communities are still waiting for meaningful action to secure their tenure rights and safeguard their forests amidst the threat of climate change.
During recent months, over 200 indigenous peoples' organizations and networks from forested regions in Africa, Asia, and Latin America have come together to devise recommendations for the appropriate allocation of funds, prioritizing their rights as outlined in the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
Indigenous Peoples' funding is typically provided in the form of small-scale, short-term grants channeled through intermediaries, which fails to sufficiently support their long-term aspirations for self-determined development.
Tumblr media
In May of 2022, the Ford Foundation and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation (via the Climate and Land Use Alliance - CLUA) and the Christensen Fund commissioned Charapa Consult to conduct a comprehensive and inclusive evaluation of principles, standards, and mechanisms to effectively support Indigenous Peoples' tenure rights and forest stewardship.
Read the full report here: https://charapa.dk/directing-funds-to-rights/
Indigenous peoples have put forward several key conclusions and recommendations regarding climate finance. These include:
Indigenous peoples must be considered partners and not beneficiaries.
The need for a holistic approach that addresses their priorities and aspirations for self-determined development across all ecosystems and takes into account the diversity of country contexts.
Funding must be rights-based, following the UNDRIP and including consultation, participation in decision-making, and consent by indigenous peoples' representative institutions.
Direct funding to indigenous peoples' organizations or funding mechanisms is preferred, and decision-making power must remain with indigenous peoples even if intermediaries are necessary.
The funding should be long-term, predictable, and aligned with indigenous peoples' priorities and aspirations, with different types of grants to cater for increasing capacities and a need for flexibilization, simplification, and harmonization of requirements.
Capacity-building and mentoring should accompany the funding
Special considerations and measures should ensure inclusion of women, youth, and persons with disabilities.
Indigenous peoples have agreed on recommendations to improve dialogue, transparency, and accountability in relation to the Pledge.
• Aligning funding commitments with the promotion and protection of indigenous peoples' rights,
• Establishing a continuous dialogue mechanism between indigenous peoples and Pledge donors,
• Disclosing information about contributions and allocations under the Pledge,
• Creating a monitoring mechanism with the direct participation of indigenous peoples,
• Organizing mutual capacity-building of donors and indigenous leaders, and
• Supporting a global platform for exchange among indigenous peoples with the necessary resources to conduct consultations and outreach at different levels.

Storch: Closing the Chapter on the Second Session of the Eighty-Sixth Legislature
Tumblr media
It’s over, but is it? More importantly, was it productive? The 60-day, second session of the 86th legislature has ended. By the time this article is published, both the House and Senate will have adjourned sine die (pronounced signee dye in West Virginia). Sorry Latin scholars. What the Legislature accomplished will be decided in a few days. Going into Saturday, there were 11 bills and two resolutions on the Senate’s calendar, and similarly, there were fewer than 10 bills on the House's special (active) calendar this morning. Senate Bill 841 was moving from the House (inactive) calendar to the special calendar on which it would get its day for a vote. Sounds like an easy day, right? That would not be correct. Changes happen up and until they can happen no more. So, to determine what has been accomplished, the changes need to be reviewed to make sure each of them has completed all legislative action. Still, the Governor and his team will review each piece of legislation that has passed both chambers for his signature, for him to veto, or for him to let become law without his signature. During this session, 23 Senate bills were signed, 15 House bills have been signed into law, and 12 bills that were passed between March 5 and March 7 are awaiting signature. There have been no bills vetoed nor have there been any bills which has become law without the Governor’s signature. This has been an unusual year. Not only due to a change of vantage point but also because of the legislative priorities and what working those priorities looked like in practical application. On Day 60, at 6 pm, the House dealt with one of the Senate’s priorities, unemployment reform. It is understandable how this could cause heartburn for legislators. In late January, Cleveland Cliffs announced it was planning on idling its Weirton Tinplate Facility, following an unfavorable ruling of the International Trade Commission in April 2024. WARN notices, federally required, were issued to nine hundred impacted employees. Nine hundred. Nine hundred displaced people looking for work or seeking to be re-trained to continue their lives in Weirton. In late February, Bruceton Mills Allegheny Wood Products, which operates approximately eight locations around the state facility, was closing its doors later that week. More than 800 workers across the state are out of work. Approximately half of these are direct employees of the company, and the other displaced employees are contractors. At approximately 10:30 pm on the 60th day, the House received the final budget compromise from the Senate. These 134 members of the Legislature have the requirement to pass a balanced budget. The Governor has issued the constitutionally, three-day extension of session because they had not passed a budget by the 57th day. At 11:11 pm, on Day 60, debate was stopped when the Gentleman from the 50th district called the previous question on a motion to concur with the Senate amendments to the budget.   Tempers are short and time is shorter, but this year, the legislature is also dealing with the news, recently released the state could potentially face a $465 million clawback of Covid relief aid by the United States Department of Education. At 11:30 pm, with a short 30 minutes to go in this session, the question on passing the bill was again called, and the budget bill passed. This will not be the last this Legislature sees of this budget. Popcorn? Anyone? Read the full article
