April Fool's Day art for My S-Class Hunters by 비완

The manhwa artist for My S-Class Hunters made some April Fool's Day art: "This year's April Fool's Day, the S-Class turned back time too much." The head of storyboarding for the manhwa, serikachan, explained the different animal choices in this thread:

Machine English translation: "Have a good April Fool's Day! Yoohyeon is Dimetrodon. Dimetrodon looks like a dinosaur, but it is not actually a dinosaur. It often appears as a fire attribute in other media (Hellfire Dimetrodon in WoW too…), so I thought it would be the best fit. At first I thought it was Charmander, but I couldn't tell it apart from Irene. [laughing face emoji]

Yerim was torn between Spinosaurus, which is very strong and lived a semi-aquatic life, and Plesiosaurus, a plesiosaur, but went with the latter for a more intuitive visual.

In many works, Spinosaurus and Tyrannosaurus are often paired 1:1, so I thought about having Director Song, who is currently fighting Hyeonje in the free game, take on the role of Spinosaurus, but I needed a dinosaur that would give a presence in the distance, so I decided on Brachiosaurus. It is done. Chew the lettuce well and enjoy the huge brachio song director…

Hyuna is a triceratops. The horns remind me of a giant spear, and while I was looking for information, I saw several Triceratops taking up a defense position, and it really suited Hyuna's situation in the early stages of her awakening. It had three horns and somehow even raised a spear with its front paws, making it an even more powerful and kingly aceratops.

Noah chose Pteranodon, a representative pterosaur, and Riet chose Deinosuchus, which is said to eat dinosaurs. It looked so natural that it seemed like it had been like this from the beginning… I'll be happy if you enjoyed it! I give my love to Biwan, who even drew dinosaurs under a tight deadline. 10年という長きにわたり常にネクストレヴェルを提示してきたDOUBLE。

初となるベスト

『10 YEARS BEST WE R&B』からは、

その足跡の確かさが溢れ出ている。

● なるほど。では、今回のベスト盤ですが、ほぼ時系列に沿った収録ですね。「今回収録されている曲はリスナーの投票も参考にしてるんですね。ミッド〜ロウテンポの曲に投票が多かったので、すこしそっちに針が振れてるかもしれませんね。」

● 確かにディスク1はその雰囲気がありますね。クラシック中心というか。ただ、ディスク2はよりアップデートされたチャレンジングな曲が多いですよね。「そうですね。USのR&Bに追従するだけではいたくないんですけど、意識はしますよね。やっぱり新しい良さもあるから。そういう新鮮なUSのR&Bも把握して、吸収してると思うんですよ。だから、USのR&Bとも対抗できるような曲を作ろうって気持ちは常にありますね。常に現役でいたいんです。」

● 音楽の芯を捉えたハードさがあると、日本ではどうもマッチョな方向に走りがちですが、 DOUBLEはハードさを保ちながらも絶対にキュートさが存在しますよね。

「私自身キャッチーなモノが好きだし、他の人のR&Bを聴く場合でも、キャッチーなモノを求めるんですね。そういう私と感性の合う人には受け入れられるんだと思いますね。」

● この中で転機になったと思う曲は？「やっぱり「Shake」かな。自分で初めて一から作ったのが「Shake」だったから、そこが転機だと思いますね。」

● それは自分のアーティスト性を認識したってことですか？

「そんなに難しいことじゃなくて、“曲が作れる、わーい”みたいな(笑)。逆に“アーティスト性”みたいな･････アーティストぶりたい感じが嫌いで(笑)。だけど“妥協しちゃえば簡単なんだろうなぁ”って頭をよぎっても、絶対曲に対して妥協しないし手を抜かないから、自分で“アーティストなんだなぁ”って思うんですね。セルフプロデュースをしてるから楽曲からPV、ジャケットのアートワークまで考えなくちゃいけないし、実際の作業量が全然多いんですよ。

そういう意味で、シンガーとだけ括られるのも･･････だから、

“R&Bシンガー”って言われると最近はピクッときますね、“私には歌だけじゃないのよ、歌だけより大変なんだから”って(笑)。」

● 今回ベストという形で一つの区切りができたと思うんですが、その上でこのベストはどんな意味を持ちますか？「SACHIKOを懐かしんで喜んでくれるファンの方も多いと思いますし、

SACHIKOを忘れてほしくないって気持ちもありますね。それだけじゃなく、

DOUBLEのTAKAKOとしての独り立ちって気持ちも強いですね。TAKAKOの姿も見てほしいし、アーティストしてのDOUBLEをみんなに認めてほしいですね。」

● では、これは仮定の話になってしまいますが、もしSACHIKOさんがご存命であったら、どう聴いてほしいですか？「そうですね...... “ここまでやったよ”　“ここまでやって来れたよ”って。

もしSACHIKOが亡くなった時点で私が音楽を止めてたら、DOUBLEのベストはできなかったと思うんですよね。DOUBLEっていうのはSACHIKOとTAKAKOのユニットで、私だけじゃない。だから今回のタイトルも「10YEARS BEST WE R&B」なんですね。だから、“やり続けてベストまで辿り着けたよ”って話したいですね。」

● 現在から見ると、10年前のR&Bシーンはまったく未成熟だったと思うんですね。ただ現在の豊潤さを考えると、DOUBLEが切り拓いた功績は相当大きいと思うんですが。「シーンが成熟していないときは、アーティストやトラックメイカーっていう作る側の数も少なかったし、その中で自分たちで切り拓いていくしかなかったわけで、少数精鋭だからこそ、最初から目指すところであった、しっかりしたR&Bが作れたんだと思うんですね。だけど、「Bed」は正直言うと歌謡曲だと思うんです。」

● 意外ですね。あの曲が当時与えたインパクトは相当大きかったように思いますが。

「だけど、“この部屋の隅でも······”ってブリッジのフレーズは自分で曲を書いたんですけど、

あの部分から今のDOUBLEの原点になるものが産まれたんじゃないかと思いますね。

あのフレーズはアドリブで歌いながら、それに合わせて詩を書いて乗せるって形だったんですね。そうしたら自分の理想に近いモノが生まれて。そのときに詩とメロディをバラバラに作るとどうしても歌謡曲になってしまうんだってことに気付いて。

それは全部感覚的なものなんですけど。」

● 自分の音楽的な感性というか音楽的なを信じたということですね。「特に最初のころはそうですね。そのうちにいろんなことが分かってきて、要領良くできるようにはなってますけど、最終的には感覚を信じてますね。だからこそDOUBLEのスタイルや “DOUBLEのR&B”が守れたんだと思いますね。」

● プロデュースクレジットは「Shake」からですが、その大本は「Bed」で生まれていたと。「向こうのトラックに日本語の歌詞を単に乗せればR&Bになるかって問われれば、それは違うと私は思ったんですね。やっぱり日本語っていう言語の特色や特性に則った楽曲作りが必要なんだと思って。それに気付いたのが「Bed」で、それで「Shake」からプロデユースも手がけるようになったんです。」

● また、家で座って聴くR&Bという形ではなく、ループが基本となるダンスミュージックとしてのR&Bを根付かせたのはDOUBLEだと思うんですね。その自負はありますか？「それは「Shake」から実現できましたね。ループするビートであってもメロディがキャッチーで格好良いものを作ればリスナーを引っ張ることができるって確信があったから。」

● 今のタイミングで初となるベストをリリースされた理由は？「やっぱり10年という区切りですね。最近では2、3年ぐらいでベストを出すアーティストも多いですけど、DOUBLEの場合は、本当にベストな作品の入ったベスト盤を出したかったので、それにはいいタイミングかなって。あっという間でもあり、やっと10年っていう時間でしたね。」

● 移り変わりの激しいR&Bシーンで、

その中でも10年以上サヴァイブできたのは？

「やっぱりブームに便乗していた人だったり、何でも良いからリリースできればいいって人、

それかいろいろな軋轢で疲れちゃった人もいたと思うんですね。

だけどDOUBLEは本当にR&Bが好きで、R&Bしか作りたくなくて戦ってきたんですよ、

それはデビュー前から。

デビューしてからも“止めるわけにはいかない”って強く思ってたし、“より日本語に相応しいR&B”ってモノをしっかり作ろうって。

そういうハードルを一つ一つ越えてくることができたからだと思いますね。」 TOKYO 日本のR&Bシーンを代表する DOUBLEが初のベストをリリース約10年前に巻き起こったジャパニーズ R&Bブーム。

R&Bっぽいトラックで歌えば誰もが “R&Bシンガー”と呼ばれてしまったり、

そんな“R&Bシンガー”のアナログ盤を入手すべく、

レコード店に開店前から大勢の人が列を成したりと、今思い出しても異様な状況が渦巻いていたが、

そんな状況は当然長続きするわけがなく。あのころ"R&B シンガー”を名乗っていたシンガーたちはシーンから姿を消し、

ブームが一過性のもの以上に成り得ることはなかった。それでも最近では若いR&Bシンガーたちが続々と出てきていて、

あのブームも少なからず影響を及ぼしているのだなとも思うが、そんな、今やっと地盤が固まりつつある日本のR&Bシーンにおいて、ブーム真っ只中のときから常に自分のR&Bを貫き通している稀有な存在がDOUBLEである。

多くの歌い手が歌う場所を失うことへの恐怖が故に、

R&Bにこだわらず歌を歌う中で、彼女ほどR&Bにこだわり、

R&Bを歌い続けているシンガーは他に存在しないだろう。

この芯の強さといったら！デビュー10周年を記念してリリースされるベストアルバム「10 Years Best We R&B」にも、

美しさの中にある彼女の力強さやブレのなさ、

「DOUBLE という言葉の構成要素としてR&Bが初めから存在する」 (by 松尾潔氏)

And song taewon his face hahahah I can't stop laughing! He really went through a whiplash from thinking HYJ is God something to the realization that the unhinged behavior runs in the family . Questioning life decisions .

I love HYJ so much ! The character is just brilliant !! It's never a boring day with hyj on scene . I love the pettiness and on spot thinking he has !

S-Class Hunters That I Raised is so many things

(Various series spoilers for the novel and the manhwa):

It's about wanting to do right by your family and supporting and loving them. It's about sacrificing for the people you care about how that can destroy you little by little, and it may not even help the people you love, or even hurt them.

It's about found family and being a decent person.

It's about capitalism, classism, and the problem with mass privatization of public resources, as well as political corruption.

It's about mental health issues and how hard it is to get by without a good support network, particularly when money is a problem.

It's about Sung Hyunje and Han Yoojin flirting nonstop.

It's about different forms of caretaking, whether it's looking out for your younger siblings, your work juniors, your coworkers, your older family members, etc. Whether it involves making them food, giving them shelter, teaching them how to survive, letting them rest, or encouraging them to keep fighting. It's about how caretaking isn't always kind, and can go so badly wrong.

It's about abusive relationships and domestic violence, and how awful trauma is.

It's about being kind to animals, and also how expensive petcare is, and how pets are often luxuries.

It's about modern media, privacy and the lack thereof, particularly in re: celebrities, gossip, and spin.

It's about not forgetting to keep in touch with the people you care about, and that communication is very hard.

It's about greed and doing the right thing, protecting your own, and doing what's best for the most people.

It's about marginalization and fighting for a better future for all.

It's about old international anger between nations, in the shadow of colonialism, war, and totalitarianism.

It's also about an angry protagonist chidingly shaking a lobster at Sung Hyunje, aquarium dates that may or may not happen, heavenly bodies, affection, and the dangers of giving magic gunpowder to an F-rank Hunter with axes to grind.
