Doctor Sleep (2019)
Tumblr media
Doctor Sleep is a sequel to The Shining 40+ years in the making. Taking its cues from the follow-up novel by Stephen King and the Stanley Kubrick classic, it’s a different but robust sequel nonetheless. Rather than try and recreate what worked about the first film (an impossible task, the 1977 horror classic is a one-in-a-million kind of movie), it tells its own story while paying homage to its predecessor and giving the fans what they want to see. Yes, it’s long at 152 but there’s an even longer director’s cut I’d love to visit sometime.
31 years after escaping the Overlook Hotel, Dan "Danny" Torrance (Ewan McGregor) is haunted by childhood trauma and struggles with alcoholism. When a young telepathic girl named Abra Stone (Kyliegh Curran) reaches out to warn him of a group who “Shine” and feed upon people with psychic abilities, he chooses to work with her to stop them.
Unlike The Shining, Doctor Sleep isn’t a horror movie. It’s more of a drama/thriller, with action-y bits coming in the later half and some horror sprinkled on top. For a good chunk of the story, we’re following a traumatized, ruined Danny Torrance trying his best to hold at bay the lingering ghosts of the Overlook Hotel while getting over his addiction, finding his place in the world and befriending Abra. There’s a lot of great material as Danny talks to his AA group about the way he relates to his father more than ever now that he is also a prisoner of the “demon in a bottle”. The way he and Abra’s childhoods differ make for great character-based moments.
And then come Rose the Hat (Rebecca Ferguson) and the members of the True Knot cult. If there’s one area where the film bites off more than it can chew, it’s with the villains. There are too many of them and several wind up being nothing more than generic baddies but otherwise, they’re the kind of villains you love to hate. As Rose the Hat puts it, the “steam” they steal from other shiners tastes best when the victim is young, terrified and in pain. If seeing kids die is something you can’t handle, know that writer/director Mike Flanagan has no mercy regardless of his characters' age.
The members of the True Knot gang who are fleshed out make for great, complex characters. One of the best examples is Snakebite Andi (Emily Alyn Lind). Under normal circumstances, she would be heroic but when she joins a group of psychic vampires who prey on children just so they can expand their lifespans… the support your initially support for her evaporates. These vampires act high and mighty but when it comes down to it, they’re just as prone to petty emotions as the rest of us, which makes every victory Dan and Abra score feel extra good.
So far, none of this sounds anything like The Shining. Psychic vampires? That’s far removed from a haunted hotel. You’re right, but Doctor Sleep makes it fit. It isn’t merely people that can shine; it’s the dead - such as the ghost from Room 237 - and places - like the Overlook - too. What we thought was a haunted building is actually much more and if that makes you wish we could get just one more look at that iconic location, the film obliges. This is where it feels most fanboy-ish, as we get pretty much every single prop and shot recreated: the blood flowing from the elevator, the twins, the tricycle down those corridors with the weird carpet, etc. Before we start docking points, however. I’d like to see anyone who didn’t want - even a little bit - to see the Overlook again. That's what I thought.
What makes these references and recreations work is how well they’re done. We see Dan confront Lloyd (Henry Thomas), who says he’s merely the Overlook's bartender but looks strikingly like Jack Nicholson. It isn’t an exact match (obviously) but even this inconsistency works. It’s a twisted memory, a ghost held captive by the Overlook looking to use a familiar image against the now grown boy who narrowly escaped its clutches years ago. The resemblance is so uncanny and the flashback and callback scenes so well done (Alex Essoe does a spot-on impersonation of Shelley Duvall) they don’t feel self-indulgent.
While we didn’t need Doctor Sleep, Stephen King felt the characters were worth returning to. Based on this effort, it’s hard to disagree. This sequel is telling its own story AND giving us more of what we enjoyed before. The performances are strong, the characters compelling and the callbacks are so well done that it makes the overlong running time feel… merely long. (December 17, 2021)

i really wanted to enjoy Doctor Sleep. It looked so promising. My biggest complaint: Rose + the True Knots weren't interesting villains to me.
Ewan McGregor and Kyleigh Curran were great tho

Doctor Sleep Movie review
Tumblr media
So, I promised you Stephen King, and here we are! Two reviews in two days! Halloween sure is closing in.
Now, small disclosure, I have seen and did like most of the Shining, but I have only see the Kubrick adaptation, and not read the books.
So the story follows the aftermath of the Shining, and then time jumps to an older and alcoholic Danny who is not dealing with his shine and trauma. It then time jumps another 5 years where Danny uses his powers for good when he is contacted by Abra another powerfully shining kid who had a vision of people eating a little boy. They now have to team up to stop them before they come to eat her.
So, I really liked this movie. The effects are really cool. I feel like it stays true to and appreciated Kubricks movie mirroring it a few times.
Now this could be seen as fan service, I however really did like it, and while I did not catch every reference it felt more like his fathers life haunting him still more than fan-service. I also did like the fact that it had a function in the story making it more than just fanservice.
I think my problem with the original elements that were implemented into this movie is that it sometimes lingers on them not long enough. I understand some of them, but a few felt a little unnecessary if they were not going to follow it though completely. I thought the twists on the scenes were really cool and still while nodding to the original keeping up the creepy nature of it. But the kind of winking at the flooding hallway seemed a little weird to me.
And while we’re on it. I know. I know they couldn't get Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall. But I felt like they could have done some CGI magic or something because for some reason it was just so obvious to me that they weren’t the same people. I know it is a little stupid, but they could have done, something more, I just wished that at least.
The story is a little predictable, but it does not make it any less interesting or captivating. The story works so well because you watch for a good 20-30 minutes, nothing happening almost. Yes it is exposition for later, but this breathing room was really one of this movies strengths. It gave the characters time to breathe and gave us time to learn about them and get invested before the story starts. When it starts it goes by really fast but it is really cool and that way it slowly pulls you in is really really cool. Because that makes sure it has your full attention for the remainder of its 2 hours and 30 minutes run time. Where you can sometimes zone out a little. The thing is, even when nothing is happening, something is happening. And again the ability to really draw out these characters was so good, because you understand who they are, why they do what they do.
The actors were really really good. Ewan McGregor did an excellent job. Kyleigh Curran was so good! She was so great. I felt actually bad when she has the nightterror and her intimidation with Crow daddy was so cool. She is really someone who can do great things and I cannot wait to see what else she can do!
The woman who played Rose and everyone else were really good too. I felt a little bit like, I understood her motivation, it was just not the most interesting in the world. Like, they want to live long? Cool, okay? Like to me it could have been a bit more flushed out what they wanted to do with their sort of immortality? Maybe that is just me, but yeah.
The visuals in this movie are good and creepy. If you have watched The Shining the visuals live up to that in terms of being creepy. I liked what they did with the overlook very much and the dutch titl when he goes into her, along with the redrum breaking, those two shots were just so cool.
This movie is not jump scare scary, but it definitely is creepy. But the thing I liked about it, besides well finished story and character arcs, is, and I know this is going to sound crazy when talking about a Stephen King movie, but it was really heartfelt. You could really feel the connection and emotions and struggles of these characters, I cared so much for them and the ending was good and cathartic and a little adorable.
I honestly really loved this movie, and I definitely don’t think you should sleep on this movie. I don’t know if you can understand it all if you haven't watched the shining, but honestly as someone who did not completely understand that movie, this movie actually makes a lot more sense!
I give it 9 out of 10 redrum’s
I know it might seem low, but for me it just missed a little something extra to be truly extraordinary and a 10 out of 10, but it is definitely worth a watch.
Tell me if you agree or disagree with my opinion and if there is something you want me to watch next!

Chris Stuckmann put it best:
The Shining has had 40 years to become the masterpiece that it is today. It’s unfair to compare Doctor Sleep to Kubrick’s work, and both films are great in their own right.
Mike Flanagan is proving that he’s one of the best directors/writers/editors in horror, with films like Hush, Oculus and the series The Haunting of Hill House.
Doctor Sleep is suspenseful, dramatic and has a great storyline full of intrigue. It’s not full of jump scares, it’s not a film of cheap frights. Instead it leaves a lot unsaid, a lot in the shadows, and foregoes the modern formula for something just... better!
The fan service and reference to The Shining is well done and doesn’t saturate the experience, instead paying homage to one of the best films ever created, and providing a sequel worthy of its predecessor.
I’d reccomend Mike Flanagan’s Doctor Sleep to all of you

Before seeing this the other day, I was gearing myself up for it to be a big disappointment. I ended up being really pleasantly surprised by it. As a stand alone piece, it's a pretty average film which is slow-paced and light on scares. But, as an appendix to The Shining it's a real treat! Hearing the original booming orchestral score, revisiting the Overlook, and seeing Danny, Wendy, Dick Hallorann, the Grady twins, dead bath lady et al were all nostalgic delights for this Shining geek :-) The set designers did an incredible job of recreating the Overlook Hotel and its maze; its corridors, the staircase where Wendy hits Jack with the baseball bat, the Torrance’s bedroom with” redrum” scrawled on the door, the bathroom door hacked to splinters by Jack were all recreated perfectly. Similarly, the costume design to bring back some of the Overlook’s most familiar residents was superb. The casting choices were smart too; Ewan McGregor was great as a grown-up Danny, Rebecca Ferguson superb as Rose the Hat, and new comer  Kyliegh Curran as Abra Stone was amazing. The picks for Dick and Wendy were spot on too, especially Alex Essoe as Wendy; her mannerisms, voice, hair, smile, blue dressing gown all brought Shelley Duvall’s Wendy back to life. Maybe not a movie for everyone, but an absolute must see for The Shining and Stephen King fans.
