Eko Eko Azarak: Wizard of Darkness (1995)

My rating: 4/10

Once it gets into the whole "supernatural slasher" shenanigans, it's kind of fun, but there's a lot of creepy, leering shots of the female characters, which make this whole thing just feel kind of gross.

Re your tags, that was my thoughts on that particular go on episode as well when I watched it at first like. For a show made in 2008 it could have very well led into offensive territory but it surprisingly doesnt and outside of some light joking it ended up just being a fun episode overall

The bar is so low it's in the Earth's core lol. But yeah, we should be thankful that go-onger is such a light hearted romp that the meanest reaction the team has to crossdressing is "befuddlement" and "mild razzing". Any meaner reaction simply wouldn't have fitted the show's tone (Sosuke and Gunpei could've totally had worse reactions is a slightly differently written show)

Rocket Gang: The Origin of Love and Youth/Training Daze was a beautiful story and it's so good to finally watch it while knowing all of the words.

I watched this so many times when I was young, some lines are forever ingrained in my memory, like "kono pan muda wa shinai" ("I won't let this bread go to waste."/"This bread won't go to waste.") or Yamato's sarcastic "goshinpainaku!" ("Don't you worry about me!") to Musashi in the locker scene--but there's a lot of dialogue in this special and some of it is definitely beyond my level in Japanese, unlike simpler, less dialogue-heavy episodes of Pokemon...

"Take care of Nyasu" Kojiro saying that to Musashi actually made me tear up. ;O; His gentle expression.

This is still such a beautiful story...

Oh, and because my Japanese isn't that good, I had no idea Sgt. Viper told them that if they fail, Junsa-san/Officer Jenny will arive and put them behind bars.

This makes the ending so much more impactful, GOD, Musashi refused to leave her friends behind and escape by herself, even if it meant going to jail!!! She went from unable to connect with others after years of being alone, abandonment issues from losing her mother so young, to absolutely refusing to leave behind the team mates who became her friends.

And the way Kojiro's expression softens... he's very, very guarded in this special, he likely couldn't be the soft and emotionally expressive person he is in the series before he met Musashi, because he had to survive on the road and it was nothing like his pampered life on his parent's estate... he likely had to build this tough as nails persona (even though internally, he is such a kind, self-sacrificing person, and he still cherishes the same hobby from his youth, collecting bottlecaps...), so even though he sounds cold and quiet, you can see his gentleness in how he treats Nyasu and it inspires Musashi to be kinder and gentler, so at the end, when she refuses to save just herself, even though it's frightening and frustrating for him, he smiles and his eyes shimmer with emotion because he realized she's healing.

Then he tries to let go again to save them because Kojiro's still self-sacrificing to a destructive degree (I wonder how bad his mental state was prior to joining, he comes off suicidal)... but Musashi's learned and hse isn't using Nyasu as a rope anymore, she pulls him up, and they both pull up Kojiro as equals. It's not just Kojiro she cares about, but Nyasu too.

Dekaranger is a fascinating show to watch knowing Arakawa's tropes now and also that he was always a really slow writer who needs lots of supporting writers bc he's always falling behind. We're nearing the end of the 30s and we realized that essentially after Dekabreak's intro...he doesn't really write any plot related episodes until the endgame???? He shows up to write some one off episodes here and there but they're usually non plot related gag episodes which are followed by 2 partners written by Junki Takegami and Michiko Yokote actually developing the characters.

He wrote some ep about Jasmine having to work with an alien that's sexually harassing her and then she declares he's fine in the end bc he actually wants to kill himself and it's all an act, but that's followed by another writer doing a whole 2 parter on the alien who killed Tetsu's parents. He comes back after that to write a gag episode about a gal alien who Ban hates and leaves again and then we get a 2 parter on the team earning their power up. He didn't even write DekaSwan's debut

edit: actually even the 3 part end game has one episode written by Michiko Yokote!!! What!!!!!!

Oh, no, he didn't write GX at all; Takahashi only authored Duel Monsters, the original series. GX was written by Takegami Junki and then by Yoshida Shin, who then wrote for the later part of 5Ds and all of Zexal. Arc-V's by Kamishiro Tsutomu, Yoshida came back again to write Vrains but interestingly was produced by Takahashi, and Go Rush!! is written by... Takeuchi Toshimitsu.

So, a bit on the Neo Space episode.

Judai breaks the fourth wall here when speaks about the last three minutes till the end, indeed Judai returns to Duel Academia after three minutes, but the episode ends a minute later.

This is a common structure for most sentai shows, so I don't know if this is specifically referring to older Kamen Rider, or Ultraman.

GX S2 changes between "gentle darkness", and "righteous darkness", which kinda shows they didn't fully have an idea how this power worked.

In-canon, creation of Neo-Spacian is supposed to parallel Yugi's final Deck being created through Yugi's imagination during the Yami Bakura duel, but obviously less serious than that. I don't know that is accurate to the manga, since it will be a long while until I get there.

Actual inspiration is likely the Guilmon lore from Tamers though, since that was being repeated with other shows of mid-to-late 2000s.

Despite their Light theming, many of the Light of Destruction related characters, like Alien of Light in this episode, give a dark aura, that will be later used for Darkness's forces.

This episode also ironically reinforces Edo's point against Judai, though the whole re-finding childhood theme will be repeated with first with Edo vs. Judai 2, then the Ceremonial Duel against Yugi, and later on Yuma vs. Astral. Yoshida really likes that trope, even though he is not main writer here yet, and this episode is written by Junki Takegami.

The other dolphins in this episode are actually children, who will grow up to look like Aqua Dolphin, who is canonically part of Dolphinian species.

Mermaid Melody is a Japanese animated TV show shown on TV Aichi animated by Studio Pierrot. The first episode was broadcast on April 5, 2003 and episode 91 on December 25, 2004. The series is divided in 2 seasons, the first 52 episodes are season 1 and season 2 is the other 39 episodes. It was directed by Yoshitaka Fujimoto and written by Junki Takegami.

It was also dubbed in Korea, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Israel, Turkey, Greece, Albania, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Italy, Spain, Portugal, France and United States of America.

Plot

Lucia Nanami, the Mermaid Princess of the North Pacific Ocean sets out on land to find a boy she had saved 7 years ago from a Tsunami, she entrusted him her pearl. However, when she finally finds him, he can't recognize him by her human form. But she couldn't also tell him who she really is because she would turn into bubbles and disappear. She tries to convince Kaito to find out that she is the Mermaid who saved him from this Tsunami.

On her way of making Kaito to find out who she really is, she also has to defeat the 4 water demons. She teams up with the South Atlantic Ocean princess, Hanon in episode 2 and in episode 4 with the North Atlantic Ocean princess, Rina. They transform into Idols with the power of their pearls. They sing songs to beat the water demons.

As the series goes on, Hanon falls in love with her Music school teacher Tarō Mitsuki, new villains appears, the Black Beauty Sisters, they earn new dresses and songs, they team up with the South Pole Ocean princess, Caren in episode 49, in episode 50 with the South Pacific ocean princess, Coco and North Pole ocean princess, Noel in episode 50 and finally with the Indian ocean princess, Sara in episode 52 who eventually died in the same episode with Gaito.
