One of the things that is unsettling and tragic about John, and maybe a reason this is hitting people's buttons so hard, is that we're seeing how John had the support of a loving group of hunter friends, he had a loving mother who wanted to save him. I think it's scary to have to confront the fact that love isn't enough. Even having a strong support network isn't enough. There's a whole different set of factors that have to happen for people to heal and not downslide into the worst version of themselves. It's also can be hard to process the idea of an abusive figure like John being a vulnerable human who could have gone on a different, better path.

Thinking about early days on the road before John started leaving Sam with Dean and was still going around and talking to hunters trying to learn everything he could. Imagine you’re some hunter and you get a call that the new guy in town wants to meet at the roadhouse and talk demons or werewolves or witches or whatever, then he shows up with a 4-year-old and a baby. He’s real serious and writes down everything you say in his journal but he also has to get up halfway through to sing and bounce a cranky baby to sleep on his shoulder while the kid stares at you with a mouth full of French fries. No wonder every hunter in John’s generation seems to remember Dean and Sam whether Dean and Sam know them or not.

Literally replace hunting with any other risky profession and the idea Sam is selfish for not wanting to hunt kind of collapses. No one would ever suggest someone who doesn't want follow the family tradition of joining the military is selfish because hypothetically, them joining could result in someone not dying. It's absurd.
Season 1 John and Dean are really like, you don't want to die painfully in your 20s/30s after a life of constant fighting with no outside connections? Is this? The height of selfishness?

Dean and Mary | SPN 2.20
Some thoughts about this scene under the break...
There's so much to unpack in this episode. I love how the story progressively reveals clues that this djinn-induced fantasy is not an ideal wish world: John's death, references to Dean being an alcoholic cad, the spectre of the young woman imprisoned by the djinn, Dean and Sam's estrangement, and the deaths of all the people they had saved as hunters.
Dean's seeming alcoholism is a handy plot device to keep others from questioning his odd behavior. And, especially with JDM not guest starring, I understand that John's death is a convenient way to explain his absence, and the story would naturally move on to the other plot points. His death is downplayed since it's natural instead of supernatural.
But while there may have been practical reasons to tell the story this way, as a fan invested heavily in Dean and John's relationship, I do find Dean's (as scripted: "that's great" !!) reaction surprisingly unbothered. Given that till now we've seen Dean wanting the family to be together at all costs, it's interesting to me that here with his Mom alive and presiding over his safe and happy home, he doesn't seem to miss John being present at all, or worried that Mary is alone. It gives me a lot of headcanon fodder, especially since in later seasons they show that Mary and John's relationship was at times rocky. This world was formed by the wish of Dean's inner child, a desire for a time before he lost unconditional love and safety, and how fascinating to find that John isn't in it.

Sometimes, I think about that journal entry of John's where he took dean hunting and dean couldn't bring himself to shoot a deer, only for Sam (who was a young child at the time) to shoot the deer himself because he thought it was going to hurt dean. Then, I immediately think about Bobby killing his abusive father to protect his mother, and, you know, I kinda lose my mind a bit.

honestly, i think the fandom dislikes john too much- imagine you‘re living your life, have a great family with your wife and two little kids and suddenly everything you’ve known to be true just turns out wrong?
a demon kills your wife horrifically, you‘re not safe anywhere anymore and your children don’t (can’t) understand why their mommy is gone?
i wouldn’t be able to function either. john thought he was doing the right thing, raising dean and sam to be strong hunters. because what else can you do, just give up and pray the monsters under the bed don’t decide to take them too?
the way he seeks revenge is human, a coping method- just like the alcohol. if you’re focusing on finding something, doing something, never stopping to think, you can’t realize how far gone you are. no time to see that your boys are afraid, no time to see that you’re alienating them- forcing them to be people they don‘t want to be.

Why Sam is the best brother ever ?
Sam is:
* Protective of Dean
* The only one who understands Dean moods  and emotional breakdowns
* Priorities Dean emotional states over his, specifically when they lose someone important to them both, like : their dad- mom second time- Bobby.
* Almost never lashes out at Dean, and if he did it means things are really dark, which is we see maybe 3-4 times over 15 Seasons.
* Sam appreciates Dean a-lot, he always thanks Dean, tells Dean he is the only he can count on….
* He never reminds Dean of his past mistakes.
* Even when Dean sees himself wrong and wants to apologise to Sam, Sam always tells him he doesn’t need too.
* In episodes where Deans was having a hard time like “ Regarding Dean” and “ Yellow fever”
Sam was Dean rock, he kept it together and took care of Dean in all the ways possible.
* He has full faith in Dean, no matter how bad things get.
* This may not be appreciated but in S2 he told Dean “ You wanna take another swing? Go ahead if it'll make you feel better. ” which translates too, i dont care what u do, I just want u to be okay.
* He will always choose Dean side against anyone
* If u think about it he got obsessed over killing Lilith to revenge  Dean death.
* Even Soulless know that being with Dean is best for him.
I mean what could be sweeter than:
* Sam telling Dean “ you will never ever hear me say that you are, the real you, is anything but good” After Dean beated him up and told him his plan to kill him.
* Or Sam telling Dean that has full faith in him that he would do the right thing, and he wont let him rot in the panic room because Dean is his big brother
* Or Sam telling Dean he never have to say thank u to him 🥲🥲 my heart
Sam 😍

I HATE HIM.
What do you mean you spent it on ammo? What do you mean you left your kids, barely teenagers at the time, to look for their own food at some crappy motel room? What do you mean you left Dean at a boys' home as punishment after he got caught stealing bread because he and Sam were hungry?
I hate him.

Is it just me or is it criminal that John and Bobby never had a scene together. Knew each other 20 years. Raised the same two kids. Same backstory, more or less. Bobby thinks John’s a shit father. Bobby wants to shoot him. Bobby will drop everything to save him because that’s the only thing that matters. Bobby knows John is summoning the demon and gets him the stuff anyway. John’s funeral is very likely on Bobby’s property but Bobby doesn’t come out for it. What even was that relationship???

John in 1x20 apologizing to Sam for stopping being a Dad at some point and becoming a drill sergeant, letting the mission become everything, and then immediately getting sucked back into that mission and not understanding why Sam didn’t kill him to get to Azazel in 1x22, framing it as I thought you of all people would understand, because when Sam told him that they were alike, that they understood each other, he accepted that Sam was all in, at any cost
VERSUS Dean seeing that Sam is in at all costs and reminding him that his life has worth too, telling him that just because they couldn’t get back the people they lost didn’t mean they needed to lose more people. When John tells Sam to kill him the scene is framed as Sam being ready to do it until Dean’s appeal convinces him not to, and Sam looking back at Dean before telling John that family is more important emphasizes that it is Dean holding things together, like he has since he was a child.
Because when John stopped being a dad and became a drill sergeant, Dean stopped being just a brother and became a dad.

friend who is watching Supernatural because I won't shut up about it: I dunno, the episode "It's a Terrible Life" feels kind of empty and doesn't really make a lot of sense. Like, the message is just "ghost hunting is mad fun, bro"
me, buzzing with murder board energy: no, no, but you see... *writes hundreds of words about how this is one of THEE Dean Studies episodes, especially when paired with the season two djinn episode and endverse, and builds important parts of the angel's lore and plans, and is a meta example of the show's creators misunderstanding their own characters and stories*

I'm not sure I like the idea that Dean is eldest daughter coded actually.
I know it's not that serious, so excuse me reading so much into it. I even sort of understand where it comes from because Dean is intensely parentified. However, for me, a really important component of the 'eldest daughter' concept is the painful transition from child and daughter to just woman in the father's eyes. That inevitable point when the eldest daughter starts to be dismissed like all other women or starts to be intimidating when they question authority because it's an affront. If anything, I think that experience of dismissal out of the gate or being derided for asking questions is better reflected by Sam?
Idk I think Dean being a son is just really crucial to the dynamic he has with John. I know Dean doesn't really push back on his Dad, but John trusts him very deeply. A kind of trust, respect and mutual understanding that I just don't think would be the same if Dean was a daughter.
I'm really overthinking it but whats new?

something about john winchester mischaracterisation just needles me inexplicably. i can deal with it if a fic is good otherwise but cmon. you have to Get Him. he loves the boys and he ruins their lives like come on….. if you don’t get that he loves them then how r u even getting dean’s character considering that dean is The Same in this manner. love can be bad love doesn’t change abuse it just complicates it etc etc.
unrelatedly but also relatedly, i don’t think he’d be actually homophobic because i don’t think he has time to care. i do however think dean would be absolutely convinced he is incredibly homophobic for unknown reasons. john probably makes like an offhanded comment about something being gay once and 15 year old dean (very attracted to men. genuinely no idea whatsoever. still feels intense rush of panic at the word) decides it must mean john desperately and intensely HATES gay people and proceeds to become world’s best baby homophobe for like a year before he starts to think Maybe Sammy’s gay (sam likes to read books) and cools down on the homophobia. also his heart was never really in it. but he still thinks john is homophobic and has also decided sam’s probably gay (sam is more attracted to women than dean is) so he worries about this a lot.
then one day john says extremely casually about sam Sometimes I wonder if he’s not a little queer, you know, and dean’s heart stops and he’s like What no of course not what and john’s like If it means he doesn’t get into as much trouble with girls as you seem to, I honestly don’t mind and dean’s just like. What. but by this point it’s far too late and all fragments of homosexuality have been far buried beneath the surface by his subconscious. Also it’s important that john WOULD be kind of annoyed by dean being gay. he already thinks sam is weird and has decided to love him anyway (although i’m not sure sam got the memo about being loved anyway so the effort was useless) so it’s ok if sam is gay (privilege of being the family freak!) but dean is meant to be mini him. #picking up girls. see that journal entry. he’d get over it though.
