G650 blasting out of @sxmairport. The Gulfstream G650 is a large business jet produced by Gulfstream Aerospace. The model is designated Gulfstream GVI in its type certificate, and may be configured to carry from 11 to 18 passengers. Gulfstream began the G650 program in 2005 and revealed it to the public in 2008. The G650 was formerly the company's largest and fastest business jet with a top speed of Mach 0.925, having been surpassed by the larger G700. The aircraft project was named the 2014 winner of the Collier Trophy, for having "strengthened business aviation through significant technological advancements in aircraft performance, cabin comfort, and safety." The G650ER is an extended-range version of the G650 adding about 500 nautical miles of range. The 300th was delivered in April 2018, just over five years since introduction in December 2012. The Basler BT-67 is a utility aircraft produced by Basler Turbo Conversions of Oshkosh, Wisconsin. It is a remanufactured and modified Douglas DC-3; the modifications are designed to significantly extend the DC-3's serviceable lifetime. Basler custom configures each new build to the clients specifications. Industries served include cargo, military, cloudseeding, scientific research, and various other applications. The conversion includes fitting the airframe with new Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-67R turboprop engines, lengthening the fuselage, strengthening the airframe, upgrading the avionics, and making modifications to the wing leading edges and wingtips. Due to the slightly higher fuel consumption of the turbine engines of the BT-67, compared to the original piston designs fitted to the standard DC-3, range on the standard fuel tank, with 45 minute reserve, is reduced from 1,160 to 950 nautical miles (2,150 to 1,760 km). Delivery of F-16 fighters to Bulgaria should be delayed and the MiG-29 will continue longer

The delivery of eight new F-16 fighters to the Bulgarian Air Force was postponed indefinitely for at least several months due to delays in production by the manufacturer Lockheed Martin.

Bulgarian Defense Minister Stefan Yanev announced the news during a hearing in front of the Bulgarian Parliament's Defense Committee on January 25. The reason for the delay in the manufacturer is the wave of coronavirus pandemic in Lockheed Martin's production process, generating an "unexpected failure".

Yanev said he received information from the manufacturer citing delays in the supply chain that would affect all customers of the newly produced F-16s. Therefore, the company will not have time to produce and deliver all eight F-16s to Bulgaria in the planned period of 2023-2024.

The contract for the supply of eight new F-16C/D Block 70 worth $1.26 billion was signed by the Bulgarian Ministry of Defense and Lockheed Martin in April 2020. The contract provided for the delivery of additional eight F-16s to Bulgaria, but if the delivery of the first batch is punctual.

Bulgaria ordered 8 F-16C/D Block 70 fighters.

The first two aircraft were expected to be delivered in November 2023, followed by four more in April 2024, with the last two arriving in August 2024.

The exact duration of the delay will be known in the second half of February, when a US delegation must arrive in Sofia to discuss the Bulgarian F-16 program.

With the purchase of the new F-16C/D fighters, Bulgaria intended to discard 14 old Soviet MiG-29 fighters, which constantly lack components. Russian contractors from MiG corporation are constantly postponing repairs. Last year the MiG-29 maintenance contract was almost canceled.

As members of NATO and the EU, Bulgaria needs to keep its jets on almost constant alert because it is part of a European Union border. When an unidentified and unauthorized foreign aircraft enters the country's airspace, usually over the Black Sea, the old Bulgarian MiG-29 jets are required to take off, increasing the amount and accelerating the jet maintenance process, requiring support from the Russians.

And Lockheed cannot simply fit Bulgaria's F-16s in front of other nations, such as Qatar, as there are deadlines related to other orders as well. Currently Lockheed's manufacturing line has jets from Bahrain, the Emirate of Qatar and the manufacturing process of Slovenian jets has begun. Each nation makes particular requests for fighters, making them unique. Even if Qatar, Bahrain or Slovenia give up their new F-16s, they could not go to Bulgaria because they have specific requests that would require expensive optimizations and more time on the assembly line.

Saab had promised to deliver Gripen E fighters six months before the deadline signed with Lockheed. Bulgaria's Gripen jets would go into production shortly after the manufacture of Brazilian fighters.

In October 2020, Bulgarian Defense Minister Krassimir Karakachanov said he planned to sell the MiG-29 fighters after receiving the F-16 Block 70 multifunctional aircraft.

The statement was made during a meeting of the finance committee of the Bulgarian parliament. Minister Karakachanov stated that when 8 new machines were commissioned, there would be no need to maintain the entire current fleet of MiG-29 aircraft and some of them could be sold. But the sale of the MiG-29 should only occur after the delivery of at least 16 F-16V fighters.

Newly sworn-in Bulgarian Defense Minister Stefan Yanev said during his hearing that the industrial cooperation program between Bulgaria and Lockheed Martin, related to the acquisition of the F-16, has not made any real development so far, but he did not say whether this is also due to the pandemic.

Bulgaria theoretically has 14 MiG-29 fighters in service today, but the really active fleet should be much smaller than that. Two aircraft always remain on standby and many jets are being "channeled", or used to supply spare parts.

Meanwhile, Bulgaria will host up to seven Eurofighter fighter jets from Spain and two F-35 fighter jets from the Netherlands to protect the country's airspace amid the Ukrainian crisis, the defense minister confirmed on January 22. The fighters will perform Air Policing tasks coordinated by NATO.
