Fog Swept Islands: Faroe Islands Culture Days in New York
Tumblr media
During the month of April 2024, Faroe Islands held cultural events in New York City for a program called “Fog Swept Islands: Faroe Islands Culture Days in New York.” The program began on Tuesday, April 9th with a reception and live musical performances by Faroese artists Eli Tausen á Lava and Eivør (who won the 2021 Nordic Council Music Prize).
I created images for the Faroe Music Export Office & The Government of The Faroe Islands, and photos covering four of the Cultural Days events can be found in the above gallery. You can read more about the other programs that were held in New York City here, and view videos about the six Faroese brands that presented at the Faroese Design, Wool & Knitting panel on The Wool Islands website here.
The “Fog Swept Cargo — Art from the Faroe Islands” exhibition will be on view at Scandinavia House through July 6th.

Trailblazers in LGBTQ+ Leadership Across Europe
Tumblr media
Stefanos Kasselakis Breaks New Ground
Stefanos Kasselakis, an openly gay former employee of Goldman Sachs, has achieved a historic milestone in Greece by becoming the leader of the Syriza party, a significant leftist opposition group. Since 2019, he has been married to Tyler Macbeth, and his election marks a substantial advancement in LGBTQ+ representation within the Greek political landscape.
Europe’s Leadership in LGBTQ+ Representation
Europe is a global leader in terms of LGBTQ+ political representation, with Luxembourg, Ireland, Serbia, and Andorra currently having openly gay individuals at the helm of their governments. This highlights the continent’s forward-thinking approach to LGBTQ+ rights and inclusion.
Tumblr media
Latvia’s Presidential Milestone
Edgars Rinkevics of Latvia became the region’s inaugural openly gay head of state earlier this year, a significant development since his public coming out in 2014. Rinkevics has utilized his role to champion equal rights for all.
Trailblazers in Iceland and Belgium
Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir of Iceland was the first openly gay government head globally, leading her country from 2009 to 2013 and playing a pivotal role during the financial crisis. Elio Di Rupo, former Prime Minister of Belgium and later head of the Wallonia region, has also been a vocal supporter of LGBTQ+ rights.
Luxembourg’s Advocate for Normalcy
Xavier Bettel, Luxembourg’s Prime Minister, has been transparent about his sexuality and stresses its normality. His marriage in 2015 to his partner was a landmark event, marking the first time an acting EU leader married a same-sex partner.
Ireland’s Symbol of Change
Leo Varadkar, who has been Taoiseach of Ireland twice, from 2017 to 2020 and again starting in 2022, is Ireland’s first gay leader. His election is emblematic of the shifting social norms in Ireland, a country with a traditionally conservative Roman Catholic background.
Serbia’s Progressive Leadership
Ana Brnabić of Serbia holds the distinction of being both the first female and the first openly gay individual to be appointed as Prime Minister. In 2019, she became the first openly gay prime minister to become a parent while in office.
Europe’s Inclusive Political Landscape
The emergence of these leaders reflects a broader movement towards inclusivity and acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community in European political spheres. Their influential positions are not just breaking barriers but are also creating pathways for future LGBTQ+ individuals in the realm of politics.

ASOIAF FANCASTING --> EVERY NAMED FEMALE CHARACTER ABOVE THE AGE OF FIVE, PART XV
Cyrelle Tarbeck (b. 241 AC): Daughter of Lady Ellyn Reyne and her second husband, Walderan Tarbeck. She had an older sister, Rohanne, and a younger brother, Tion. When House Reyne and Tarbeck were crushed by Tywin Lannister, Cyrelle's brother, husband and father were all killed. Cyrelle and her sister were sent to the silent sisters. Fancast: Riley Keough.
Cyrenna Swann (c. 230-255 AC): Second wife of Lord Walder Frey and mother to two sons. Fancast: Lára Jóhanna Jónsdóttir.
Dacey Mormont (c. 272-299 AC): Eldest daughter and heir of Lady Maege Mormont of Bear Island. She is an accomplished warrior and rides with King Robb Stark in the War of the Five Kings. She is murdered by House Frey at the Red Wedding. Fancast: Natalie Hoflin.
Daella Targaryen (64-82 AC): Fourth-born daughter of Jaehaerys I and Good Queen Alysanne. She was delicate and shy, and was bullied by her younger sister Saera. Many eligible lords and sons of lords courted her, but in the end she chose to wed Lord Rodrik Arryn, who was more than twice her age, but a gentle man who would take care of her. Unfortunately, Daella fell pregnant and died shortly after delivering a healthy baby girl, Aemma. Fancast: Elle Fanning.
Daella Targaryen (b. 199 AC): Eldest daughter of Prince Maekar Targaryen, who would later become king as Maekar I, and his wife Dyanna Dayne. Her mother died when she was under 10. She had four brothers, including Aegon the Unlikely, and one sister, Rhae. Fancast: Therica Wilson-Read.
Daena (main series era): A mummer at the Gate in Braavos. Fancast: Jodelle Ferland.
Daena Targaryen (c. 145-175 AC): Eldest daughter of King Aegon III and his wife Daenaera Velaryon. Her two elder brothers, Daeron and Baelor, became kings consecutively after her father's death. She was married to Baelor at the age of fifteen, but he refused to consummate the marriage. When Daeron was killed in Dorne and Baelor became king, he annulled their marriage and locked Daena away in the Maidenvault with her two younger sisters, so that they would not tempt any man. Daena hated this unjust imprisonment and became more and more defiant, finally giving birth to a bastard son that turned out to be fathered by her cousin Aegon. Baelor, aghast, fasted for forty days after the boy's birth and eventually collapsed and died. Many thought that Daena, being Aegon III's oldest surviving child, would become queen, but she was without political support during her imprisonment and the throne passed to her uncle Viserys instead. Daena's son would go on to become Daemon Blackfyre, who sought a crown for himself and caused the ruinous Blackfyre Rebellions. Fancast: Ellen Hollman.
Daenaera Velaryon (b. 127 AC): Second wife and queen of Aegon III and mother to five children. She was presented to Aegon at the age of six at the Maiden's Day Ball after the death of his first wife, Jaehaera. They were wed later that year, but their first child was not born until ten years later. Fancast: Alicia Agneson.
Daenerys Targaryen (53-60 AC): Eldest daughter and first child to survive infancy of Jaehaerys I and Good Queen Alysanne. She died of the Shivers when she was no more than seven. Fancast: Olivia Tennet.
Daenerys Targaryen (b. 172 AC): Only legitimate daughter of Aegon the Unworthy and his wife, Queen Naerys. At the time of her birth, her elder brother Daeron was already married and had a son. Daeron had been married to Princess Myriah Martell as part of the peace pact between Baelor I and Dorne. When Daenerys was fifteen, she was married to Maron Martell, the ruling prince of Dorne. With this marriage, Dorne was finally brought into the Seven Kingdoms under Targaryen rule. It was rumoured that Daenerys had been in love with her bastard half-brother, Daemon Blackfyre, and that her marriage to Maron instigated the First Blackfyre Rebellion, but Daenerys and Maron were, by all accounts, happy together. Maron built the Water Gardens as a gift for Daenerys, where their children could play in the summer heat along with the children of other nobles. It was Daenerys who declared that the children of the servants could play there too, starting a tradition that continues to this day. Fancast: Sinja Dieks.

I am once again feeling emotional over Freyja getting hurt in the Swiss base explosion.
She didn’t get caught in the initial explosion as she wasn’t in that area of the building, but when the rest of the building began to crumble, she noticed that a section of the ceiling was about to fall on a couple of workers and - knowing only she could get to them in time being on skates - she launched herself forwards and pushed them out of the way, only for the falling rubble and debris to land on her instead. A large portion landed on her legs, and crushed one of them below the knee. She eventually regains consciousness but is entirely alone in the remains of the room, pinned under the rubble, and is left crying out desperately for help until her voice goes hoarse, eventually passing out again due to the concussion she sustained and the extreme agony she was in.
The next time she wakes up, she’s in a hospital bed. There was nothing they could do to save her leg, and so the doctors had obtained consent from Jóhanna and Kristján (her parents) to go ahead with amputation, as much as it pained them to give it - knowing how much grief it would cause their daughter. She wakes up, still groggy from the anaesthesia, and asks the doctors what happened. They remind her about the explosion, and as she begins to remember, she also remembers the pain she had been in. She looks down at her legs, and sees that one looks shorter than the other under the blanket. She throws it off, ignoring the doctors pleas to slow down, and when she sees the bandaged stump, it all hits her. Below the knee, her leg is gone. She completely shuts down, and everything else is a blur. All she can think about now is what the future holds for her. Would she ever be able to skate again? Would Overwatch discharge her? Was there even an Overwatch to go back to? Were her friends okay?
During her recovery period, she spends most of her day watching all of the news reports about the Swiss base explosion. She learns of Commander Morrison and Commander Reyes’s deaths. She watches footage of others being pulled from the rubble. She watches coverage of the hearings held by the UN, interviews with Overwatch agents. All of it makes her heart sink further and further. Overwatch is disbanded, and Freyja eventually returns home - but the depression remains well into her rehabilitation.
She still has nightmares about the event, and though she now accepts her prosthetic leg and has adapted to her new life, she still has bad days.

You know, it's nice when, after seeing "the Northman" in cinemas with my boss (archeologist with specialization in Scandinavian archeology) and the chief innovation officer (philologist with specialization in Norse sagas), I can actually keep up with the conversation about proper historically accurate jewelry, clothing, symbolism, Mythology and more used in the film. It means I've learned from working where I do for almost three years.
(Getting to be in a 40 minute car ride home with both of these experts discussing what Robert Eggers has done right, how much you can feel Sjon's influence on the script, and how much historical accuracy comes from Jóhanna Friðriksdóttir's knowledge as historical consultant is one of the best debriefings I've ever had).

About this blog - info :>
◻️ Welcome to my little ask blog where I draw a large portion of my inspirations from Scandinavian (though admittedly from a mostly Norwegian centered view) folklore, folk beliefs, and history through the perspective of, and how the Scandinavian devil, Fanden\Fan\Faen, as they are called was perceived.
Here you will also meet a few other characters who are both friendly and unfriendly. Human and not. Feel free to ask them questions as well if you’re interested in them, though it’d be nice if you clarified who you’re asking about.
◻️ The blog’s host is called Termite, and I go by They\Them pronouns. :>
That’s about all you need to know about me, hahaw. I just have a special interest and find the whole process of the Viking age, Christianization, witch persecutions, folklore and folk tales wholly FASCINATING. Concepts doesn’t stem from nothing and knowing even just a few parts of it slots things into interesting places.
I’m just here to bring SOME of my ideas to life, hahaw.
◻️ Here you can expect the occasional comic about either a personal story of my making, a visualization of a folkloric concept, or a retelling of folk tales, Fun facts, and all that fun stuff. And of course questions I answer whenever I am lucky enough to get them, hahaw!
◻️  The way I answer questions is that I go through a 4 answer options (though deviations might happen):
1: If the question doesn’t spark much VISUAL inspiration, I’ll answer through text. Maybe I will at a later time retroactively draw something when the inspiration strikes.  2: A visualized, but straight forward answer that acknowledges the questioner.  3: A comic written to be ca about the question that will answer it, even if the answer itself won’t acknowledge the question and might be left a bit open ended. Think of it as a snippet of a story.  4: OOC \ Blog related requests are fun too.
If you want to ask the person behind the blog, please phrase your question as ‘’OOC: [insert thing you want to say here]’’ or ‘’To the Mun\Termite’’, I’ll more than happily ramble about whatever.
◻️ Small rules to follow, I’ll be brief:
-Don’t spam. If you’re afraid Tumblr ate your ask, I’d be happy if you’d say so in the follow up ask. ^^
-Be respectful and don’t send in explicit NSFW questions. I am ok with NSFW themes (on my own terms) but keep it reasonable.
- Don’t send me fetish related questions or requests. Even non-sexual ones as I don’t consent to it.
- Please understand that IC =/= OOC.
- I I do not consent to anyone reposting, using the art I create, or turn my art into NFT’s. Unless I draw explicitly FOR YOU, my art is all mine.
- I can do mistakes, and while they’re never intentional, may happen. I might misinterpret a source, translate something wrong (gods I hate old danish-Norwegian and dialect texts... Norwegian might be my first language BUT WHY DO THEY SPELL IT ALL LIKE THAT), and accidentally not see through historical bias. I am just mentioning that, so that if you notice something like it, that you’ll hopefully understand it’s not from a place of malice.
- If you have any neat book recommendations on Scandinavian history and folklore, GIMME.
◻️ Most of, but unfortunately not all, of my sources I’ll likely draw from:
