Fog Swept Islands: Faroe Islands Culture Days in New York
Tumblr media
During the month of April 2024, Faroe Islands held cultural events in New York City for a program called “Fog Swept Islands: Faroe Islands Culture Days in New York.” The program began on Tuesday, April 9th with a reception and live musical performances by Faroese artists Eli Tausen á Lava and Eivør (who won the 2021 Nordic Council Music Prize).
I created images for the Faroe Music Export Office & The Government of The Faroe Islands, and photos covering four of the Cultural Days events can be found in the above gallery. You can read more about the other programs that were held in New York City here, and view videos about the six Faroese brands that presented at the Faroese Design, Wool & Knitting panel on The Wool Islands website here.
The “Fog Swept Cargo — Art from the Faroe Islands” exhibition will be on view at Scandinavia House through July 6th.

Ava Luna, STEFA*, and YATTA at Starr Bar
Tumblr media
Taking the stage for the first time in five years, New York City’s Ava Luna headlined a sold out, benefit show at Starr Bar on Thursday, April 18, 2024. The group were joined by YATTA and STEFA*, with funds from ticket and poster print sales going to the The Palestinian Social Fund. The PSF “raises unconditional funding for cooperative farms in Palestine through grassroots efforts.” Nadine Fattaleh of the PSF spoke to the audience briefly before the second act began their set.
When announcing this concert, Ava Luna mentioned that they are working on a new album, and this intimate show gave audience members a preview of that forthcoming material. Carlos and Felicia of Ava Luna also worked with River L. Ramirez on movement for this show too, so it was their first time utilizing choreography rather than playing instruments.
The night began with a set from artist YATTA (ricky sallay zoker) who I saw perform live for the first time since Silent Barn’s final show in 2018. YATTA spoke eloquently to the audience about the war happening in Palestine while also seeming to have a lot fun on stage.
STEFA*, the musical project by stefa marin alcaron was up next and for their set, stefa was backed by Kaley Puckett on keys, Miles Francis on drums, and Nick Joz on double bass/electric bass. STEFA*’s lyrics were sung in both English and Spanish and alcaron joked before one song that they would translate what they were about to sing for “the gringos in the audience.”
During their set of brand new material, Ava Luna members Carlos Hernandez, Felicia Douglass, Julian Fader, and Ethan Bassford were joined by Keenyn Omari on flute for one song, plus Sarah Snider on keys and Keyanna Hutchinson on guitar and percussion. The final song of their set was “Daydream,” off their album from 2014, Electric Balloon, where Hernandez performed on guitar.
Photos of the show from Starr Bar are in this gallery. Additionally, I captured Ava Luna’s last show five years ago at Market Hotel and those images can be found here.

Solar Eclipse at Marsha P. Johnson State Park on April 4, 2024
Tumblr media
People gathered in Marsha P. Johnson State Park in Williamsburg, Brooklyn to check out the solar eclipse. The park offered modified binoculars, a telescope, and eclipse glasses for people to view the first total eclipse in New York state in 99 years. New York City wasn’t in the field of complete totality, but we were able to view up to 90% during the maximum period that began at 3:25PM.
I documented some of the people who came out to witness the eclipse in this gallery on my digital camera and on 35mm film.

United Musicians and Allied Workers Presents Living Wage for Musicians featuring Yo La Tengo, Slaughter Beach, Dog, and more at Elsewhere

Full gallery link available on my website here.
On Sunday, March 31, 2024, United Musicians and Allied Workers (UMAW) presented a show at Elsewhere in Brooklyn, NY featuring live performances by Yo La Tengo, Slaughter Beach, Dog, The Ophelias, and Christelle Bofale. The event was done to celebrate the “Living Wage for Musicians Act” which was introduced by Reps. Rashida Tlaib and Jamaal Bowman to Congress which would pay royalties to all artists who have their music streamed online. To bring attention to the bill, UMAW presented five shows around the US in various cities and the NYC edition took place on Sunday evening featuring sets by Yo La Tengo, Slaughter Beach, Dog, The Ophelias, and Christelle Bofale. In addition to the performances, there were tables from other organizations such as Artists Against Apartheid, and Party for Socialism and Liberation.
Some images that I created for UMAW on Sunday night are available on my website here, and to learn more about UMAW, please check out their website here. You can also contact your elected officials to ask them to support the bill at this link.
There are two remaining UMAW presented events that will take place tonight (Wednesday, April 3rd) in Ypsilanti, MI at 4/3 Ypsilanti at Ziggy’s (with Dr. Pete Larson with Fred Thomas, Jib Kidder, and Michael C. Sharp), and on April 18th in Wahsington, D.C. at Black Cat (with Yasmin Williams, Dior Ashley Brown, and @).

Mclusky and Ganser at Baby’s All Right
Tumblr media
The trio known as Mclusky returned to New York City faster than many of us expected them to by booking an underplay show (courtesy of Saint Vitus presents) at Baby’s All Right on Sunday, March 24, 2024. For their final US tour date, they were joined by Chicago’s Ganser, who joined the tour after Mclusky’s concert at Warsaw.
I learned about the show on March 8th at 10:02AM thanks to an email alert from Oh My Rockness that I set up about two decades ago.* Once that notification hit my inbox, I quickly opened the message and immediately bought tickets via Dice.fm. I then proceeded to text (or DM) everyone I could think of who I knew that went to the Warsaw show to let them know we were getting another round at a more intimate venue before the band returned home. The concert sold out well in advance, which I anticipated as Baby’s has about a third of the capacity of Warsaw. I hadn’t originally planned to have a three concert run to close out March, but thanks to SPRINTS on Friday, Kim Gordon on Saturday night (photos of that available here), and Mclusky now on Sunday, I couldn’t see myself not attending all three.
Kicking off the night at 8:30PM were Ganser (of Chicago, IL) who I’ve been wanting to see for some time now and was very excited to discover on the morning of Thursday, March 21st that they were added to the Dice ticketing page for the show. I had a conflict for their previous NYC performance at Market Hotel and I was overjoyed that I would finally see them live. The band lived up to my expectations and I’m so glad I could finally pick up a copy of their newest EP at the merch table since I previously purchased a digital version via Bandcamp.
Mclusky’s setlist was pretty much the same as Warsaw’s but we also received a bonus song that wasn’t listed. Back on the 7th, we heard “That Man Will Not Hang,” and last night we were given “No Covers” a B-side to their “To Hell With Good Intentions” single which can also be found on their Mcluskyism compilation. Falco declared there would be no encore because they are not French. Before their final song, Damien told the crowd that all three members will be celebrating their birthdays soon and a cake with candles was brought to the stage to commemorate their upcoming birthdays happening within ten days of each other.
Images of last night’s show appear in the gallery on my website here as well as portraits, and scans of both acts’ setlists. Thank you to both Ganser and Mclusky for playing, posing, and for returning to NYC. Also, thank you to the extremely kind person to my left up front who generously handed me a copy of Mclusky’s setlist after they finished their final song.
*Other acts that I set up ages ago that are yielding alerts present day are Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Les Savy Fav, PJ Harvey, CSS, Pretty Girls Make Graves, The Murder City Devils, and The Hives. Much older me appreciates younger me doing that favor and also for having pretty good taste in music.

SPRINTS and Slow Fiction at Zone One at Elsewhere
Tumblr media
On Friday, March 22, 2024, Dublin, Ireland’s SPRINTS headlined their second show at Zone One at Elsewhere in Brooklyn, NY and were joined by local act, Slow Fiction.
SPRINTS’ debut album, Letter to Self was released by City Slang Records back in January and I have been listening to it often since then. The press release for their first single, “Heavy,” mentioned guitarist/vocalist Karla Chubb being inspired by Bauhaus and PJ Harvey’s Is This Desire? and as a fan of both of these things, I stopped reading the rest of the email and immediately went to check out the video, which I loved. In addition to their music, SPRINTS were one of the Irish bands to withdraw from their SXSW showcases recently, so suffice to say, I was very excited to attend their live show in Brooklyn last night.
For the final three shows of their US tour, SPRINTS were joined by Brooklyn’s Slow Fiction, an indie rock quintet that gave a lovely, moody contrast to SPRINTS highly energetic post punk set that came afterwards. During SPRINTS’ set part of me wished Death by Audio (RIP) still existed here as it would have been a perfect place for them.
Photos of both acts now appear in a gallery on my website here, and may thanks to the members of SPRINTS for being game to have me create portraits of them before the show, and to Lucy, Jeanette and Bianca for their help in making it happen. SPRINTS’ US tour concludes tonight in Washington, DC.

On Saturday, March 16, 2024, the tour in support of Danny Brown’s Quaranta came to New York City for a date at Irving Plaza. There were opening sets by his tourmates Bruiser Wolf (of Detroit, MI) and Hook (of Riverside, CA), and Danny performed in NYC on his 43rd birthday.

Tierra Whack Celebrates Debut Album’s Release at Webster Hall on Friday Night
Tumblr media
Tierra Whack – Webster Hall – March 15, 2024
Philadelphia rap queen Tierra Whack has been getting the party started worldwide with her infectious rhymes for several years now. (It’s probably only a matter of time before she graces the multipurpose-room stage on Abbott Elementary to battle Tariq Temple at a F.A.D.E. showcase.) Whack channels creativity and visual aspirations into her poetic lyrics and the videos that accompany them. From the Grammy-nominated video for “Mumbo Jumbo” to the recent Alex Da Corte–directed “27 Club,” her flair for fashion exudes further joy and pop, as witnessed on World Wide Whack, her debut full-length. She celebrated its release Friday night at a sold-out Webster Hall.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With a large inflatable of the World Wide Whack avatar occupying a third of the stage, the rapper appeared adorned in her silver clown suit mirroring the attire from her album’s aesthetics. Opening with track one from her latest, “Mood Swing” appropriately began with  “I’ve been trying new things.” Throughout the show, the crowd indulged in a call-and-response, which warm-up DJ Kill Sing kicked off with a cry of  “worldwide” and requested the “Whack” reply. The admittedly nervous singer would cover the majority of the new songs, from the bounce-inducing “Ms Behave” to the melancholic “Two Night,” Her confidence building thanks to the supportive crowd, Whack effortlessly weaved among rap, pop, and R&B with her new material. On lead-single “Chanel Pit,” music box melodies danced amongst the spits of cultural references, like Vin Diesel and Resident Evil. Closer “27 Club” grooved to more R&B vibes for a downtempo, contemplative swan song, enrapturing the front row.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tierra Whack didn’t leave her stans without a trip down memory lane, including fan favorites like the bop “Pretty Ugly” and “Fuck Off,” which elicited raised middle fingers across the room. Everybody on the floor happily sang, “He likes my diamonds and pearls,” along with “Hungry Hippo.”  For the first time live, Whack performed her section of Lil Yachty’s “T.D.” before calling it a night. Despite the house lights turning on and exit music playing, everyone stayed put, chanting, “World Wide Whack,” leaving the stage crew unsure if they should halt operations. DJ Kill Sing indicated it might not be the end to this unforgettable night, as a wigless Whack returned to confess she was already shedding her costume. The crowd-manifested encore had the Philly native run off “Peppers and Onions” atop the barricade, before dropping to the floor amid her rabid admirers. —Sharlene Chiu | @Shar0ck
