Okay so here’s the thing. If I see one more “who cares about historical accuracy in a historical piece of media” I am truly going to lose my entire mind. I’m not asking for TOTAL accuracy down to the detail (I don’t strive for that, and things should connect with a modern reader) but I AM asking that books and shows and movies ENGAGE WITH THE PERIOD THEY’RE SUPPOSEDLY SET IN. The new Persuasion is just the newest (and one of the most egregious) instances of this, but I’ve seen this sentiment a lot, recently. If you don’t care about historical stuff, then why create or engage with historical media? The goal should not be to “modernize” historical fiction, but to create and engage with more diverse historical media. Different settings and periods! More stories about queer and BIPOC folks! Historical fiction has so so much to offer without stripping it of all historical context. I’m tired.

people actually went on about how game of thrones made it socially acceptable to be a fantasy nerd, as though the lord of the rings movies hadn't been released less than a decade earlier and left far greater cultural ripples and i am just
got may have made the adults feel better about liking fantasy, but lotr got into the kids' heads when they (we) were just young and impressionable enough to be absolutely transported and emotionally rewritten by don't you leave him, samwise gamgee and my brother, my captain, my king and and rohan will answer
lotr was rewriting entire generations' brain chemistry long before asoiaf and so obviously it's not fair to compare any post-lotr fantasy novel to it, and each book series was trying to do different things within their own spheres and so that also is not a fair comparison, but in terms of the cultural impact of the adaptations that came out within a decade of each other, saying that it was game of thrones that made fantasy mainstream is baffling
game of thrones could only run because the lord of the rings movies laid the path, and i will die on this hill

Man. I think the reason why I like 80s movies so much is the fact that they used real sets and practical effects instead of CGI for everything (and only used it in special cases), and they were brighter, more colorful and vibrant. Most movies nowadays are too dark to see anything in them. :/

OHHHH!! lmao (>w<)
I figured it had to be ask game related but i kept looking for like.. "note" or "memo" or something lol
paper - favorite children’s book?
hmmm- i actually dont remember too well which were my favorites.. especially since apparently the books that left an impression on me before reading was ruined by school were.. young adult books?? according to wikipedia?? (Dragonsong by Anne McCaffery and A Wind in the Door by Madeleine L'Engle) both are juvenile according to my library tho so they can count i think??
if it has to be a picture book im going to go with Be Nice To Spiders by Margaret Bloy Graham because its nice and helped me be less afraid of buggies pretty early on i think :)

@604 (i love u mwah 😘) tagged me to list 7 of my favorite comfort movies:
the secret life of walter mitty: my favorite movie of all time, i’ve gone so many places and tried so many things that i never would have had the courage to do if i hadnt watched this movie
howl’s moving castle: thee number one comfort movie on this list, this movie has it all. weird family, hot wizard, beautiful visuals and music, themes of hard work and anti-war and self-acceptance and becoming whole again!!
interstellar: my first real intro to sci-fi and it knocked me flat on my back when i was 15 and ms hathaway’s character says that love is the one thing that can transcend all distance and time and death and universes. do not go gentle into that good night.
shrek 2 LMAOOOOOOOO sorry but it’s true. one of the only sequels that outshines its original & i have such fond memories of watching this with ryan and beatrice and the homies before i moved away :(
phantom of the opera 25th anniversary at the royal albert hall: every so often i remember that this version of phantom exists and i cant believe it’s real and i watch it and go insane for a few hours and make heart eyes at the insanely beautiful cast
mad max fury road: GOATED. FILM. incredible story about women for women featuring big guns and bright colors and autistic-coded tom hardy and real exploding cars
im bending the rules and giving this spot to both princess mononoke and spirited away because they evoke the same hard-to-conjure hard-to-explain emotion in me. something about the bigness of the movies and the smallness of the characters within a sweeping green dangerous enchanting historical-mythological setting makes my heart ache
tagging anyone who is currently in bed
