Something something Marble Hornets is a tragedy something something...

but the fact that before we even meet all of the named characters, half of them are dead.

Seth and Sarah are dead before Jay ever looks at the tapes he got from Alex. We hear Amy's name but the first and only tape we see her in is the tape that seals her fate (the fate we never even see, it wasn't recorded or if it was Jay never got to see it). We see Brian in the tapes during the filming of Marble Hornets, but by time Jay starts investigating Brian is gone and only Hoodie-- a mystery, a loose end (how much of Brian was left? We get a glimpse in the comics but in the webseries proper we get no answers and he might as well be Dead)-- remains.

And in the end, only Tim and Jessica are left.

I could literally talk for hours about how Piranesi’s internal voice changes— so subtly!!— over the course of the novel. at the beginning, we are reading what we come to know as classic Piranesi voice: lots of capitalization, very few contractions, many exclamation marks, virtually no slang or colloquialisms. This is juxtaposed starkly against the Other’s more casual, modern way of talking. So Piranesi would say something like: “It is a beautiful Day!” whereas the Other would say something like: “It’s pretty nice out.” But!! As the story progresses, Piranesi’s voice changes too. He doesn’t lose the capitals until he’s left the House entirely, but after he meets 16 and starts reading Matthew Rose Sorensen’s old journal entries, he starts using contractions. Now he might say something like: “It’s a beautiful Day!” instead of “It is a beautiful Day!” This change is so subtle barely anyone picks up on it, but it is a HUGE insight into Piranesi’s psychology. Even if he doesn’t remember being Matthew, his exposure to 16 and his past self are transforming him on a subconscious level. Okay so here’s the thing. If I see one more “who cares about historical accuracy in a historical piece of media” I am truly going to lose my entire mind. I’m not asking for TOTAL accuracy down to the detail (I don’t strive for that, and things should connect with a modern reader) but I AM asking that books and shows and movies ENGAGE WITH THE PERIOD THEY’RE SUPPOSEDLY SET IN. The new Persuasion is just the newest (and one of the most egregious) instances of this, but I’ve seen this sentiment a lot, recently. If you don’t care about historical stuff, then why create or engage with historical media? The goal should not be to “modernize” historical fiction, but to create and engage with more diverse historical media. Different settings and periods! More stories about queer and BIPOC folks! Historical fiction has so so much to offer without stripping it of all historical context. I’m tired.

Fanfiction is not “content”! Art, in general, is not “content”! Stop devaluing yourself as an artist and fundamentally mischaracterizing the whole concept of creating fanworks just because you're so brainwashed by capitalism that you’ve been made to feel like all good things can or should be monetized!!!

One thing I find particularly marking about Fleabag is how most fans put the priest on a pedestal, acting like he is THE man and has some kind of superiority when, frankly, he IS like other men.

The clearest example to me is the Confessional scene. It is the one scene where Fleabag allows herself to be vulnerable in front of him because she trusts him and loves him. She expresses a deeply-rooted uneasiness and states how lost she feels. And what he does is turn it into something sexual.

If there was one moment he should have acted as a priest, an advisor, a shoulder on which to cry, it was this one. But when she is at her lowest, he uses it to place himself in a position of domination. It's quasi-predatory. He is like other men.
