I'm rewatching Gilmore Girls (again) and I can't help but witness how Dean was very cute at the beginning of his relationship with Rory. He read her book recommendations even if he thought he wouldn't like them (and he did like them). He brought her to the dance despite being uncomfortable in this type of space. His first serious discussion with Lorelai was more than threatening, but he answered quite cleverly.
Sure, he was making some mistakes, but he was a teen, he was learning how to be in a relationship just like Rory did, and the two of them weren't a bad pair. I understand why the writers felt the need to have their relationship downgraded as preparation for Jess, but I think they did it very harshly and seriously mischaracterized Dean, which is a shame.

So the reason I love fanfiction is intertextuality. I love allusions to canon woven into a new narrative, and building in my mind the complex web of references that all contextualize each other. It's those links that add depth of meaning to a fanfic, metatextual weight to characters and locations. I think the better the transformative process of fanwork, the more of the original it carries inside, the denser and richer points of reference to the story on the other end. If you think of a canon fact as a color, the more vibrant the fanwork, the bigger thrill I get from it. It lights up more of my brain.
There's this thing I like to do where I will find a media property that I know nothing about but has a sufficient high quality body of work, obikin, geraskier, merthur, etc. I will read thousands of fanfics and build up a mental map of the series in my mind, noticing things referenced by multiple stories in different ways and trying to extrapolate back to an original event in the canon story. The more references to an event, the more specific and real it is, whereas other things referenced by one or two people exist in a quasi real state, smaller nodes in the network as it were.
Once I've built up a robust mental map of a story, I will watch the series. I will watch the Clone Wars, the Witcher, Merlin, etc., and compare my expectations with the reality of the canon narratives. I will observe the ways in which fandom skewed the story via emphasis, or where it improved the story via giving interiority to characters in traumatic or intimate moments. Once I've finished watching the series, and have canon fixed in my mind, I reread all my favorite stories with a richer mental picture of each one, really savoring the work of the author in engaging with a story I love.
I genuinely think this is a sort of wish fulfillment from my time as a classicist where all we could do was build up a mental map of the extant texts, but there was no way to ‘watch the original’ as it where, no way to check how historians and poets transformed their experience. It's a guilty pleasure to apply the same conceptual mapping skills I learned for antiquity to pop culture, one degree removed from reality, but I enjoy it so much and spend way too much time doing it (when I should be writing). I wonder if other people do this though, it's kind of a tumblr ass hobby lmao

Guys I think Falsettos has become my new hyperfixation.
Like I cannot go a day without thinking about the complexities of Marvin's internalized homophobia and all the reasons for why he was an asshole.
I can't stop thinking about the little things in the proshot like Marvin worriedly saying "what?!" after Whizzer said that he "needs a man" or Marvin trying to say "Baby I'm sorry" after hitting Trina.
I can't stop thinking about Marvin's development with him becoming more accepting of his sexuality and admitting his love to Whizzer and even calling him "baby" (I cannot tell the amount of times I watched that moment guys 😭) and Marvin making friends with Cordelia and Charlotte as a way to show him getting over his misogyny and no longer just trying to fake romantic relationships with women.
I can't stop thinking about how it was implied that Marvin also passed of aids soon after and how devastating that must be for the tight knit family.
I can't stop thinking about the idea of Cordelia and Charlotte finally getting married when it became legal and everyone being happy and sad because Marvin and Whizzer should've also gotten to this point goddamn it.
I usually don't feel this emotional about the stuff I watch but omg you guys I haven't felt this way since I watched Nimona 😭

Studying for my Greek myth class, studying Odysseus's travel, studying how Odysseus's only goal was to come back to Penelope, studying how he had so many occasions to forget, studying how he had so many places he could've stayed forever, studying how he had nymphs and sorceresses but he chose the human, studying how he cried while remembering the Troyan war, studying...

Rereading the secret history and do you know what’s interesting? Bunny was the only person who was kind to Richard in the beginning, and is a large part of the reason that Julian allowed him to do Greek… yet he’s the least aesthetic. He’s described as annoying, even despite his kindness, just because he’s not as fairytale-like as the others. Richard did truly only care for beauty…

what’s the vibe of your blog. everyone has their own. is it an art gallery exhibit serving canapés. a nightclub. a knights of the round table situation. a book discussion meeting. a lonely hearts club newspaper section. a bedroom where you and two friends are chatting. the school of athens debating matters of consequence. a garden tea party. a bacchanal. an agatha christie murder novel style tense dinner party. etc

"if i was orpheus i would simply not turn around" yes you would. if you were orpheus and you loved eurydice, you would. to love someone is to turn around. to love someone is to look at them. whichever version of the myth — he hears her stumble, he can't hear her at all, he thinks he's been tricked — he turns around because he loves her. that's why it's a tragedy. because he loves her enough to save her. because he loves her so much he can't save her. because he will always, always turn around. "if i was orpheus i would simply —" you wouldn't be orpheus. you wouldn't be brave enough to walk into the underworld and save the person you love. be serious

One thing I find particularly marking about Fleabag is how most fans put the priest on a pedestal, acting like he is THE man and has some kind of superiority when, frankly, he IS like other men.
The clearest example to me is the Confessional scene. It is the one scene where Fleabag allows herself to be vulnerable in front of him because she trusts him and loves him. She expresses a deeply-rooted uneasiness and states how lost she feels. And what he does is turn it into something sexual.
If there was one moment he should have acted as a priest, an advisor, a shoulder on which to cry, it was this one. But when she is at her lowest, he uses it to place himself in a position of domination. It's quasi-predatory. He is like other men.

I would kill to get to go to Monster High. Full sized lockers, an education, show up to class in questionable clothing and have everyone roll with it, 2000's style everywhere, darkend hallways. Sign me the fuck up.
