Today's aesthetic: cosmic horror tabletop RPGs from the 1980s whose creators wrote the "madness rules" by simply plagiarising a list of disorders and their descriptions from the DSM-II and turning it into a d100 lookup table, except the DSM-II still listed "homosexuality" as a mental disorder (it wasn't removed until the DSM-III), with the result that there are several published tabletop RPGs where there's a small but non-zero chance that seeing Cthulhu will make you gay.

“plot armor” is so funny as an idea. I can’t believe the author used this character in a thematically coherent way instead of killing them off randomly in the fourth chapter…
#writing#plot armor invokes 'youre not gonna do it so why should i care?'#the main character isnt going to die in chapter four#the main character might THINK hes going to die but we all know he wont#thats fine and normal#the problem is when the only options presented are 'he succeeds 100% or he dies'#and we know hes not gonna die#so i can just skip this entire subplot because it clearly doesnt matter#its showing off for the sake of showing off and padding the runtime#versus he might die OR he might get captured OR he might lose a limb OR he might fail his mission OR someone could get blackmail of him#and dying might not really be on the table but all those other options are#this story could turn into his life in/escaping from prison he can finish the story with only one arm thats plausible!#and on the positive side plot armor can be useful in gaming for example#you want the main character to progress so you soften the blows a little and help them along#they need to get to the end because otherwise theres no story#but yeah plot armor isnt actually a problem as long as there are other stakes beyond the apocalyptic ones#BECAUSE you know the protagonists arent going to die you can focus on their love lives or whatever#meta
