So I drew a Mordor orc this time.
Tumblr media
He turned out looking a bit too much like a dunmer from Elder Scrolls, but if you think about it, the orcs from LOTR movies did look like ugly dunmer a bit 🤷‍♀️
Tumblr media
Like I mentioned, he is not a Moria orc or an Uruk-hai - there are some differences between these types I guess, particularly in case of the Uruk-hai, of course (at least in the movies). This is a classic Mordor fella.
I named him "Shar-za", which roughly translates to "human voice", since he knows Westron.
Tolkien's take on orcs was quite radical, since initially he indicated they were creatures evil by default and irredeemable. However, he himself felt a bit uncomfortable with this idea and gradually changed his mind to something slightly less "black and white".
I guess Shar-za isn't an entirely evil creature. For sure he was very fun to draw 🤷‍♀️ I think that typically pretty faces do get boring after a while.
PS. Ignore the bow. Please ignore it.

Do you know how the Orcs first came into being? They were elves once, taken by the dark powers, tortured and mutilated. A ruined and terrible form of life. And now... perfected. Motherfucking Uruk-Hai.
Whom do you serve?

These are all very old, but they still hold up pretty well, unlike most of my older stuff
The Witch-King, Durin (maybe VI), and a captain of Isengard
The WK's helmet/crown is sort of based off Tolkien's sketch of the crown of Gondor and some designs I drew up for some regular Gondorian helms He's dressed in a full-body outfit that's held to his body by leather straps, it's hard to make well-fitting clothes for him since his measurements are a biiiiit tricky to take Neither of his hands are good, his left especially (which is why it's subtly cropped out of frame), otherwise there's nothing here that I think is tooo clumsy Designwise there's not much I'd change, I'd just remove the spike from his helmet (I remembered immediately after I drew it that he wears his hood over it), add some more weapons and stuff to his belt, and decorate his armour a bit (i have a different design for him as the ruler of angmar that's much fancier and i reeeeeally wanna draw that again now, so stay tuned for that)
Durin's crown is based on the design on the West-gate of Moria, just fancied up a bit His shield is based on one from Tolkien's drawing of Smaug, but he really deserves a prettier one :P I thought a hammer would be a cool, it's ceremonial and made of gold, silver, and pearl I think his design and the drawing holds up basically to how I'd do it today, though the mail's a little too dark (oh and I wouldn't give him the chausses, since I mostly tie those to Dáin and the dwarves of the Iron Hills)
The Uruk is still really really good from every aspect to me The feathers in his helmet mark him as a captain, worn in a plume like Men wear them, and they're eagle feathers that he bullied out of some mountain Orcs for some extra flair The cape is just for decoration, unlike in Mordor where it denotes status Same goes for the fur over his shoulders He could use a shield and some other equipment I guess, but otherwise there's not really anything I'd change about him!!
(yeah pretty much every single one of my older drawings is in the same pose from the exact same angle, it was a hard habit to break XP)

"...AND BY SLOW ARTS OF CRUELTY WERE CORRUPTED AND ENSLAVED; AND THUS DID MELKOR BREED THE HIDEOUS RACE OF THE ORCS..."
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on the many different types of orcs and orc makeup effects by Weta Workshop, all orc makeup iterations featured here can be found in Peter Jackson's first installment in the "Lord of the Rings" film Trilogy, "The Fellowship of the Ring" (2001). New Line Cinema.
"But of those unhappy ones who were ensnared by Melkor little is known of a certainty... Yet this is held true by the wise of Eressëa, that all those of the Quendi who came into the hands of Melkor, ere Utumno was broken, were put there in prison, and by slow arts of cruelty were corrupted and enslaved; and thus did Melkor breed the hideous race of the Orcs in eny and mockery of the Elves, of whom they were afterwards the bitterest foes. For the Orcs had life and multiplied after the manner of the Children of Ilúvatar... And deep in their dark hearts the Orcs loathed the Master whom they served in fear, the maker only of their misery..."
-- "The Silmarillion," "Quenta Silmarillion, III - Of the Coming of the Elves and the Captivity of Melkor," written by J.R.R. Tolkien

I feel like a Miyazaki-inspired Lord of the Rings would be an amazing adaptation.
Hayao or Hidetaka, you ask?
BOTH.

September 2022: On A Sunday Walk
Seen while walking...
Seriously? More wasted food rotting in the sun. For all the Fallout 4 fans, one of them was Salisbury steak and, based off the smell, you’d be lucky if 9 rads was all you got if you ate it:

I don’t know how long this area stays filled with water. I know after a rain that the excess water from here trickles across the footpath before heading downhill towards the interstate:

Caution - nature reclaiming in progress:

The hand symbol suggest these strange glyphs were left by Orcs from Isengard. Of course, it could just have been kids doodling in the concrete but how likely is that?:

It may sound odd but bagworms remind me of my paternal grandparents. When I was a kid, every Autumn, when the bagworms were infesting their pecan tree, they’d cut out the webbed branches & burn them in a bonfire. There is arguably no more satisfying sound than hearing a garden pest go snap, crackle & pop:

Seen in the yard of another member of the resistance. I don’t hold out much hope that Governor Lee will get ousted in the upcoming election as love of ignorance & a voucher system supporting it run deep in my home state but it won’t be because those of us who believe in good public education didn’t try:

I’ve seen a lot of flyers in my time but this is the first want ad I’ve seen for someone looking for GTA5 RP players for their Discord server:

But they were clear at any rate that Uglúk and his troop came from Isengard, and spoke of Saruman as their master.

So let's say I theoretically accidentally got my friend into the Middle-Earth table top game, do I choose Mordor or Isengard?
Like I want trolls but apparently you can't run them with the Uruk-hai but the Uruk-hai look SOOOO much cooler

(Relevant reading below poll.)
This poll is one of my favorites, because I love every possible option. When it previously ran, voters determined Legolas had dyscalculia. I'm eager to see if that result holds up in this "extended edition," or if tumblr will find itself swayed in a new direction.
Excerpted from The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Chapter 7: Helm's Deep and Chapter 8: The Road to Isengard
'Two!' said Gimli, patting his axe. He had returned to his place on the wall. 'Two?' said Legolas. 'I have done better, though now I must grope for spent arrows; all mine are gone. Yet I make my tale twenty at the least. But that is only a few leaves in a forest.'
(Rest of the relevant text below the cut.)
...
'Twenty-one!' cried Gimli. He hewed a two-handed stroke and laid the last Orc before his feet. 'Now my count passes Master Legolas again.' 'We must stop this rat-hole,' said Gamling. 'Dwarves are said to be cunning folk with stone. Lend us your aid, master!' 'We do not shape stone with battle-axes, nor with our finger-nails,' said Gimli. 'But I will help as I may.' They gathered such small boulders and broken stones as they could find to hand, and under Gimli's direction the Westfold-men blocked up the inner end of the culvert, until only a narrow outlet remained. Then the Deeping-stream, swollen by the rain, churned and fretted in its choked path, and spread slowly in cold pools from cliff to cliff. 'It will be drier above,' said Gimli. 'Come, Gamling, let us see how things go on the wall!' He climbed up and found Legolas beside Aragorn and Éomer. The elf was whetting his long knife. There was for a while a lull in the assault, since the attempt to break in through the culvert had been foiled. 'Twenty-one!' said Gimli. 'Good!' said Legolas. 'But my count is now two dozen. It has been knife-work up here.'
...
'Things go ill, my friends,' he said, wiping the sweat from his brow with his arm. 'Ill enough,' said Legolas, 'but not yet hopeless, while we have you with us. Where is Gimli?' 'I do not know.' said Aragorn. 'I last saw him fighting on the ground behind the wall, but the enemy swept us apart.' 'Alas! That is evil news,' said Legolas. 'He is stout and strong,' said Aragorn. 'Let us hope that he will escape back to the caves. There he would be safe for a while. Safer than we. Such a refuge would be to the liking of a dwarf.' 'That must be my hope'' said Legolas. 'But I wish that he had come this way. I desired to tell Master Gimli that my tale is now thirty-nine.' 'If he wins back to the caves, he will pass your count again,' laughed Aragorn. 'Never did I see an axe so wielded.' 'I must go and seek some arrows,' said Legolas. 'Would that this night would end, and I could have better light for shooting.'
...
Suddenly there was a great shout, and down from the Dike came those who had been driven back into the Deep. There came Gamling the Old, and Éomer son of Éomund, and beside them walked Gimli the dwarf. He had no helm, and about his head was a linen band stained with blood; but his voice was loud and strong. 'Forty-two, Master Legolas!' he cried. 'Alas! My axe is notched: the forty-second had an iron collar on his neck. How is it with you?' 'You have passed my score by one,' answered Legolas. 'But I do not grudge you the game, so glad am I to see you on your legs!'
