#In Yugioh OG series the card game was just a card game

Text
Lest this be foreshadowing in my life: I want to make a short parody Yugioh comic or web-series about a person living in the Yugioh world who FUCKING hates Yugioh.
Applicable to Beyblade too, I wouldn’t split hairs.
Imagine living in a world where all decisions and arguments are made by playing with toys targeted towards an 8+ year old demographic. Not even cool like Pokemon mind you.
All executive decisions must be determined by a game of Monopoly or Sorry Sliders™. If you beat the President at a game of Battleship then they have to join your party in playing the equivalent of the World Cup but for Go-Fish.
The series would be about the ONE guy who just hates the game with the burning fury of a thousand suns but he is also a fucking prodigy at it. He hates the game because he thinks its easy and dumb and doesn’t know why people are obsessed over it.
He gets dragged into participating with the plot after his Best Friend™ becomes obsessed with becoming the world champion or something and runs off for like a year or so becoming famous for being so good.
Main Character wants to hang out with his buddy, but his good ol’ pal is too stricken with the limelight to pay him much attention, so he decides, fuck it then, he’ll just have to become good enough to get on his BFF’s radar again. MC is the straight man to the usual Yugioh/Beyblade tropes. He wins easily, he gets frustrated when EVERYONE wants to play a round with him and he’s like got places to go, he meets and accidently/begrudgingly befriends a cast of cooky characters....
Somehow he gets dragged into the usual government conspiracy and wins or what-have-you, but he really just wants to talk to his BFF again. That’s it. That’s his motivation. He doesn’t care about becoming World Champ or whatever, he doesn’t want to play his BFF in a game, he only joins the tournament arc so when he and his BFF are in the finals, he can FINALLY have a good conversation again.
I love me a good reluctant and jaded protagonist and I just find this concept amusing. Also I’ve been rewatching a lot of Yugioh lately and like--what if someone doesn’t wanna play a round. Then what. Do they force others to play? Cuz in Yugioh prime the card game was just a card game with holograms making the monsters. It wasn’t like they were real (with some exceptions). Can’t ya just say “Yeah I don’t wanna play today fellas”

What are your ideas on Yutu’s Unique Magic?
Maybe Riddle!Yutu having a countering UM to his father, or Cater!Yutu having one that allows him to see the true in people, etc, etc…
Also, what if Yutu has a sister/brother back in his OG timeline? Did he bring them with or they just got left behind?
for context, check these posts (1) (2) or look at the Fyuuture kid section under series on my masterlist.
oof I have a lot. Unique magic strikes me as something that is supposed to be reflective of who the mage is as a person as well as the Disney character/concept the boy is based on.  Since Yutu is not based on anyone really, we are more free with inspiration for his unique magic, with two exceptions. Idia and Kalim both have lines suggesting that their unique magics are passed down in their family's, though I imagine the incantation is different to each person; it makes sense for their Yutu's to have Gate to the Underworld and Oasis Maker respectively.
Before I really get into the weeds, I do like the idea of Yutu having (a) sibling(s) in the OG timeline, again because that can happen in Fire Emblem Awakening but also because it adds to the angst somewhat. As for whether or not he would bring them back in time, the answer to that is yes. Yutu has a few friends he traveled back in time with that are scattered around Twisted Wonderland with no way to contact each other, and if he had a sibling (with the exception of Malleus! Yutu whose sister is a bit... special) then they would be among that group. If you want some extra angst we can steal even more from FE: Awakening and make it so Yutu's sibling died before he arrived, maybe they turned into a blot monster that follows Grim's overblotted form as a replacement for his hench human.
We could even make it so Yutu's sibling doesn't have any magic, just like Yuu. You know. For the parallels ψ(`∇´)ψ

Riddle! Yutu
Riddle! Yutu having a magic that counters his dad is such a good concept, especially for someone who initially hates him. There are two types of magic that we have seen counter Off With Your Head: Trey's Doodle Suit and a strong shielding spell used by Leona.  I can think of a few directions to take this line of thinking, so let's start with the most grounded.
A strong shielding spell, one that can be applied to multiple people, sounds like a spell that thematically fits Yutu.  We don't know a lot about how these spells function, but they're important for combat magic and shielding multiple people seems to be implied to be difficult.  Let's say in this case it's natural for Yutu and essentially the same for him as shielding himself.  This sort of spell feels like it should have a card themed name, Big Blind maybe?  It's a term that refers to the minimum bet required to continue a poker game if I understand what I read correctly. The only card game I know how to play is yugioh
The less grounded approach could be a sort of spell that creates an anti magic field… it's a concept I did toy around with mostly because I was thinking about more Alice in Wonderland themed names for a unique magic, and thought up “Everything is Nonsense” or something along those lines.  My one sort of caveat to this concept is that I think a spell like this would be heavily stigmatized, probably cause a lot of blot build up for a caster, and I'm uncertain of how it would work mechanically. Well that and I have an idea for a different Yutu who this spell would fit a bit better... but that would require me to cook with a different type of fire.
I did mention in my post about Riddle! Yutu that I liked the idea of his unique magic allowing him to shrink or grow because of Rule 42 in Alice Adventure's in Wonderland saying all people more than a mile high must be rejected from court. If Riddle is the Queen of Hearts, well then any time they argue all Yutu has to do is grow and then he won't be allowed to yell at him any more so there. As a side note do you think this logic could apply to the Chimera in the Prologue? Because I could see that being darkly funny if it comes up in game in that context.
Cater! Yutu
I had a really well thought out idea about Cater being able to see a limited amount into the future before I realized that I was describing the sharingan from Naruto so fuck me I guess.
So just hear me out, you know in twst battles you can see at least one of spells the enemy is going to use? That's sort of what I thought Yuu's unique magic would be if they had it, but I also like the idea of it being Cater! Yutu's. It would function more like an instinct than an actual vision (*clenches fist* just like naruto) but he can use his magic to tell what a person intends to do before they fully think it. Cater is skilled at divination so a unique magic that lets his kid see a little bit of the future feels like it could work for him.
Speaking of divination, I sort of also like the idea of Cater! Yutu having a magic that has something to do with stars and starlight. Maybe he can turn into a void like being made of cosmic energy, similar to how Cater's Split Card is symbolic of his many faces, Yutu's void form could be symbolic of how he feels displaced in the world.
Ace! Yutu
We don't know what Ace's unique magic is (yet) but there are a lot of theories. Time travel, something that steals another person's spell, something related to optical illusions?
I think it would be fun if Ace! Yutu could do something with reflections/mirrors. As in he can reach through mirror and attack, similar to how Hanged Man works in JoJo. The further the distance the more magic it takes, it can also work with things like water but that takes a lot more magic too.
Either that or he's able to travel between mirrors on his own without the dark mirror. That might be a much more difficult thing to do though...
Jade! Yutu
I have a very clear idea for what I wanted to do with Jade! Yutu's magic, but it's a bit complicated to explain because I'm not a physicist.
The basic idea was that Yutu is able to exert magical force on an object, so long as he knows it's exact dimensions and what it is made of. I called it "Crush the Heart" because I wanted both his and Floyd's Yutus to have magic to follow their dad's naming theme. To activate it he has to be looking at where the object should be and picture it in his mind, the more precise the crush the more concentration, control, and magic it takes.
The name could in theory be quite literal, but Yutu isn't quite there yet in his knowledge of biology or magical control.
Floyd! Yutu
Like I said, I want the twin's Yutu's to have a name that is similar to their dad's. Floyd's Bind the Heart uses Kanji that literally translates to "coiling tail"... which I guess is more similar to the magic I gave Jade! Yutu than the "gnawing teeth" that Shock the Heart does, but that magic is supposed to be something that requires calm collected control, which Floyd and his son simply do not have. Still, lets play off that and give Floyd! Yutu a magic that has something to do with shocks and teeth.
I think Floyd! Yutu should have a taunt. Floyd already loves the idea of a good fight, his son is really good at combat magic, and they both talk so much shit that the idea of that literally being his unique magic just sort of works.
Functionally the spell would work similarly to Jamil's, where the person has to look him in the eyes for it to work. The name of the spell could be something like "Reveal the Heart" but that does sound sort of stupid to me so I'm not sold on it. The spell makes a person unable to focus on anyone other than Yutu and wares off after a certain amount of time, it can fail in fashion similar to Riddle's if the enemy mage has a protection spell up.
Azul! Yutu
Another Yutu who I know exactly what I wanted to do with, I got the idea while playing Darkest Dungeon of all things. I feel like it's a bit lame though.
Azul! Yutu can create phantom limbs out of cosmic magic. When he is in octopus form those limbs take the form of human arms, and when in human form they take the form of tentacles. He says when asked that what he is doing is manipulating shadows because he likes to keep people on their toes (or fins take your pick) and he finds it very funny to watch people squirm when they realize there really is no escaping his grasp.
It is a very difficult magic to use, he needs physical strength to use those limbs because they are only as strong as his real ones, so he works out and a lot to make sure he doesn't hurt himself while using it.
Ruggie! Yutu
Laugh With Me is a perfect magic for a hyena to have, and it suits Ruggie's personality really well. Actually... I did write that his Yutu shares his laugh and I think it would be so painfully cute if that extended to his Unique Magic too. Ruggie makes a big deal about how he's kind of a crappy mage, how he has to do a lot of extra work to make up for his low mana pool and poor upbringing. Can you imagine how embarrassed, proud, and awed he would be if his son inherited his spell? That's something only great mages are supposed to have, not little guys like him. Good thing neither Yuu or Yutu care about that huh?
Vil! Yutu
I haven't done a post about Vil! Yutu really beyond this bit about him bonding with Vil, but I did mention what I think his unique magic would be.
I can't find it but I read a myth once about a painter who drew animals with a magic paintbrush that would bring them to life if he gave them two eyes, so he only ever gave them one. I thought it would be neat to have a spell like that and it feels like something that would fit Yutu Schoenheit very well. His magic allows him to create temporary familiars similar to Lilia's bats, bigger creatures take more magic and focus.
I wrote the name for this spell as "Technicolor Dream" since I thought it would be nice for the name of Yutu's magic to nod towards his father's job and his dreams about having his family back.
I have a lot more Yutu's chilling in my inbox, so I'll revisit this topic (lilia! yutu has a whole ask about his um that I really like) once we are done with round 2 of Yutu posting.

@shiocreator @the-goofiest-tour-guide
Tagging you bc I need to explain Yugioh lore since you both asked-
His name is Yugi Muto (Yuugi Mutou in the og/S0) and he's the littlest guy known to man. There's a whole thing in the series about the Pharaoh's name tbh.
The card game actually came after the manga, season 0 of the anime, and even the first series of the original duel monsters! So technically the card game is named after him and not the other way around.
I won't ramble any more but Yugi Mutou Mr. King of Games himself (yes that's a title he legit holds) is also 5 feet tall and kinda pathetic you might be able to beat him up Gist LMAO. Just don't piss off the Pharaoh.

6, 7 - Kristoph, 12, 13, 18
Should I be doing them separately? Oh, well, too late haha
YAYYY thanks for asking about my #specialguy ^_^
6. Show us a bit of a WIP!
Kristoph Gavin never dreamed he'd luck out with an assistant like Apollo Justice.
Justice had come recommended by an old friend, a law professor at UCLA. Without her recommendation, he never would have taken on a mentor to begin with--he didn't have the patience for their sloppy mistakes.
"You'll like him, Gavin," she'd said over the phone. "He's bright, professional and eager."
Little did Kristoph know just how eager Apollo Justice was. The morning the young lawyer strode through his doors, his eyes practically glimmered with excitement. His red vest and pants were perfectly creased, his watch poised for him to make sure he wasn't even a second late, his hair slicked back with just two strands perked up like bunny ears.
"Apollo Justice, sir," he'd introduced himself, shaking Kristoph's hand with a quiver in his voice. Not a nervous quiver--it was reminiscent of a dog straining against his leash to greet his owner.
7. Is there a piece of clothing you think [Kristoph] is particularly fond of/that you imagine them wearing a lot or like to draw them in?
I think a lot about Kristoph and clothing! He's a dainty man, or at least he appears that way on the outside, so I love to think what a "casual" outfit for him would look like.....at MOST he'll dress down to a sweater, collared shirt, and slacks. Still loafers, you will never see that man in tennis shoes.
12. What's the funniest or craziest AU idea you've ever come up with?
I was talking with some friends about a crossover AU with my OG special interest since childhood - Yugioh. I imagine the AA characters would be isekai'd away into a world where problems are solved with card games and magic items instead of courts (because in yugioh world, no one gets sued or prosecuted for anything?? Kazuki Takahashi said fuck cops ig).
Maybe there's a new court system and Phoenix and Maya have to defend Yugi for murder? Apollo gets stuck defending Kaibacorp against all the injury lawsuits Kaiba must get from his gaming technology that causes Actual Pain when you take damage? The possibilities are endless.
(Also, interesting crossover lore with two series involving spirit possession/magic items!)
13. What's a character or ship you haven't written/drawn yet but would like to some day?
FRADRIAN!! Fradrian my absolute beloved. I haven't gotten around to writing them yet but I will.
18. Type [charater]'s name and tell us what the autocomplete suggests as the next word
I have autocomplete turned off, sorry! No one tells me what to write /j

The Ask Won't let me post links
Honestly, I could try and give a description, but I won’t do it justice, so - https://ww7.manganelo.tv/chapter/manga-kh987864/chapter-1  OR https://mangareader.cc/chapter/yu-gi-oh-chapter-1- that’s chapter 1 of the YuGiOh manga. It’s not that long if you want to give it a read, but it’s not for everyone, so I get it if you don’t want to. It also has a few jokes that are very 1990s Japanese, if you know what I mean.
I prefer the OG manga to the other series (though 5ds has a special place in my heart) but I know some people who are used to the show find the manga “too dark”. Or they get confused by the lack of card games in the early stuff - Kazuki Takahashi (May he rest in peace) was a big game guy, so a lot of the early story featured loads of diverse games. He gave an interview once about shonen type manga at the time, and how while a lot of the themes were good, every single one seemed to be about guys beating each other up to solve their problems. He wanted a similar story where the characters used more brains and strategy that didn’t always involve kicking the crap out of each other.
I personally think you’d find it really interesting, but I also get it if it isn’t for you! Just … if you do read it, once you get to the, uh, main game, of the chapter, remember, this is what I first thought of when someone explained Miraculous Ladybug to me. This is what I thought Tikki or Plagg would have been.

good news yugioh mutuals i rewatched bonds beyond time with my brother this week and am now very much thinking about yugioh 👍 tell me smthn fun about it (if you’d like :]) i’ve never really been in its fandom
OMG <3
here are jsut some random facts i know:
in toeis season 0 they made it so one of honda/tristans aspirations was to be a pilot which is so cute bc hes given like nothing in canon
in the digital world arc of anime duel monsters joeys like the one person who asks what his deckmasters abilities are while atem & tea just wait for some macguffin moment haha
in GX chazz princeton had this chant in the OG dub that was a fun play of words with his name "majoume jun" where jaden always refferred to him pretty informally so hed be like "san-da!" which sounds like the japanese word for thunder and when he went to another academy he did it with one of the students there but they thought he was saying majoume thunder so it became his fun little chant and the guys at 4kids decided to make it chazz it up in the dub which is endlessly funny to me. i know theres no good way to literally translate majoume thunder but certaintly there some other play on words they couldve done but i love chazz it up so
bakura ryou lovessss the occult and the deck yami bakura used in battle city is actually one ryou made! the deck freaks out joey
in the og manga duke devlins whole intro arc involved his clown dad who dresses as a clown 24/7 and his dad tries to burn down the building theyre all in its wild. in the anime they just play digeon dice monsters and are normal
"hold on, before you chazz me" / "im really good at card games, and thats what lifes really all about anyways!"
this one funny mistranslation
Tumblr media
edward scissorhands was a big inspiration in general for the series, whole reason yugi is a little goth king
this GX post
the fandom has never let yami yugi live down that time he set a man on fire, and we never should
peak noah textpost
Tumblr media
honestly @/millenniumlesbian just has good ygo posts all around take a looksie if you want
also one time seto kaibas hacking theme made an appreance in an episode of arthur once

I've been waxing autistic about Yugioh since last night b/c of some GX video essays I watched, so far I only binged season 1 of the original series a couple summers ago but I can't stop thinking about the character designs they all look like Sonic gijinkas it's so stupid (affectionate)
And so much crazy stuff happens!!! At least TWICE people nearly die just to save some cards, Jaden's parents subjected him to electroshock therapy to try to make him stop being a chunibyou, in 5Ds they play card games on motorcycles, the OG series alone is so absolutely BONKERS!!!!!

So Friday night, I got back into the Yugioh! franchise when I decided to treat myself to the video game Legacy of The Duelist on Nintendo Switch.
I've only played for two days but it's so fun. There's a tutorial mode that teaches you how to play and do the different summons, which is great for older fans like me who aren't familiar with the newer summons like Pendulum and Link summoning.
Most importantly, you don't have to be online to play the solo content! You can duel different characters from the various Yugioh anime while catching up on the story, or skip plot entirely and just duel. You can duel as different heroes and then duel the hero as the opponent.
There's also solo content I haven't unlocked yet: Duelist Challenge mode that unlocks as players defeat characters in Story Mode, and two Battle Pack Modes; Draft Play, where players create a deck from 45 cards in three rounds of pack opening, and Sealed Play, where players' decks are generated instantly from 10 five-card Battle Packs.
I've played 4-5 other Yugioh games and this one is shaping up to be the best one. I don't have to worry about what to do next like when I played Yugioh Spirit Callers. I get more of a story than when I played Eternal Duelist Soul. I know some people don't like not seeing most of the monsters rise up from the cards, but for me, this is a good throwback to Power of Chaos, my very first Yugioh video game.
Did I mention that I've also started rewatching the OG Yugioh anime series? There were episodes I missed when it aired and life is short, so I figured what the hell.
I've had a crappy month and getting back into a card game franchise that was a cornerstone of my childhood has given me some much needed joy.

no i need to document something tho-
just about every tv show i liked as a kid and will still sometimes watch unironically (in varying degrees) was a literal fucking ad.
Pokémon- we love
Digimon- omg particularly OG, the digidestined right after that, and then DIGIMON FRONTIERS WHERE THEY TURNED INTO DIGIMON THAT WAS MY FUCKING DREAM OK-
Yu-gi-oh!- i like this card game better than the pokemon card game tbh
My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic
Ever After High
(like all of disney???)
lolirock my beloved-
Monster High- look mattel did right, ok?
wakfu!!!- admittedly less of a blatant ad lol. (i actually remember liking this show AT THE SAME TIME as yugioh, which definitely didn’t scramble my child brain because one main character was yugi and the other show’s MC was yugo)
Tinker bell!- ok not a tv series kind of show, but still a franchise with a big animated portion of revenue aND THE BOOKS!!!
I WILL REMEMBER MORE

I’m asking you this because you’re someone I follow who’s into YuGiOh. It looks kind of interesting and I want to get into it, where do I start? The internet is unhelpful
Ooooh!!! We got one!!!
YGO has multiple series, but I highly suggest starting with the OG series. That's the one with Yuugi. It will sometimes be listed as "Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters."
Yu-Gi-Oh is kind of a funky series in that it's about the ghost of a 3000-year-old pharaoh possessing a teenager, and various dramas from the ghost's previous life (which the ghost does not remember) surfacing, including the vengeful spirit of an ancient Egyptian theft and a cult that basically worships the pharaoh. But it's also very aggressively about card games.
Some people like it for the card game aspect. If that's what you're interested in, I'd suggest starting from the beginning of the anime. If you want to delve more into the "possessed teenager" thing, I'd suggest starting from the beginning of the manga-- the first few books are about Yami Yugi using a variety of magic games to punish Yugi's bullies. Multiple people get set on fire. (There's an anime adaptation of this part of the manga that fans call "Season 0" which was super hard to find when I was a middle schooler obsessing over YGO, but I believe you should be able to find it now. The animation style is pretty different but it's fun.)
(If you actually want to PLAY the card game, maybe consider starting with one of the video games? The anime does not follow IRL rules, and they're especially shenanigan-y in the first season.)
The YGO dub and sub are pretty different. The dub was highly localized for white bread American families, and in some ways it's super nostalgic for that era of anime and in places genuinely funny ("You're a third rate duelist with a fourth rate deck!" is a meme from the dub). On the other hand, they made some changes like.... there's a bunch of duel where the players are rigged into Jigsaw-like contraptions that will kill you horribly or chop off your legs, and in the dub they change all this "go to the shadow realm." So if you like horror or more serious dialogue, I'd go for the sub.
Some people ALSO just watch YuGiOh the Abridged Series. I've only seen a little of it so I cannot comment on what this will get you besides a lot of memes.

I heard one person say that shows about trading card games like Yu-gi-oh would be a lot more interesting if they were based of the world of the creatures in the cards instead of people playing the game to solve everything. What do you think?
I think.
The orginal concept for the Yugioh anime series held more water than it's later fucking iterations.
Like. Are you telling me. That some dingdongs found a card game from egypt, made it into a popular childrens game because FUCK WHY NOT and built a financial empire on it. And meanwhile-somewhere in Japan, a Egyptian pharaoh was reincarnated into a kid whose grandad owned the equivalent of a dnd/game card shop, and this Dead Pharaoh can posesss him at times and he is the BEST AT THIS CARD GAME and he needs to unyeet his grandpa from the Shadow Realm? That fucked.
But I have seen the much later seasons of the anime, I'm very VERY unimpressed. It lost it's glitz and glam after the og Yugi stopped being the main.
I will also say-the CARD ART of the actual cards are more visually intresting than the actual game ITSELF. I would just buy the cards so I could look at the pretty pictures.

Yugioh S4 Ep 27: Joey Punches Valon to Death and Seto Kaiba buys a Car.
My favorite character is back!
THE STORYBOARDER.
Like clockwork, the best storyboarder of all of Yugioh saw in the episode notes “This is the one where we shall Destroy Joey Wheeler” and he was like “Yes! this is extremely my thing!” and he’s back at it again, destroying Joey Wheeler with such finesse.
Like it’s so hard to explain in caps because you can’t see stuff move, but this animator is so good at the Yugioh vibe--he makes these character designs WORK for him (or her? No idea the identity of the mysterious storyboarder (or team of storyboarders--maybe this was one little group they freelance out to that worked really well together? I dunno) ) they really capture what Yugioh IS in a really unique way and still remain fairly economical in the animation sense. They do not hold back on any pose, and go completely ham into this ridiculous concept of a card game where you put on a special suit and punch eachother in the face.
Mind you, it’s still a card game and I skipped all that, but man...this is such a good storyboarder and I know that next episode they’ll be gone but for now I’m just gonna bask in it.
First off, Rebecca manages to figure out Seto’s 6-letter password in order to access billions of people’s personal data off of a satellite (we don’t get to find out what the password was) and although the storyboarder is great--they did make one fatal mistake.

The bane of every Californian who leaves California. LA is like a completely different country to San Fransisco but everyone only knows of two Californian cities and assumes we’re right next door to each other.
And it’s like...no, man. I don’t have Disneyland. Do I sound like a cheerful person that lives next to Disneyland? Do I say “bruh” and smile with the force of 1000 suns as we surf the coast on the backs of Lisa Frank dolphins? No dude, I have a strong Bay Area accent that makes me sound like a dry sarcastic asshole and I wear sweatshirts to the freakin beach because it’s very cold and filled with great white sharks.
(Sorry I just had to delete like 10 k words where I compared the entire cast to US cities by saying cryptic stuff like Joey Wheeler : Seto Kaiba is like LA : San Fransisco and like it was the biggest random tangent that only makes sense to me. Quarantine brain, y’all, I got SERIOUS quarantine brain. Anyone else? Anyone else just find themselves wasting like 2 hours thinking of which cities match the personalities of different characters on a show that came out so long ago? Man I need distractions right now.)
But back to what’s happening on the show, Yami is coming to terms with Joey’s struggle about as well as Yami does.
Tumblr media
Which is mostly Yami saying “I’m pretty sure I killed Joey in that card game with Bakura in S1 and Tea had to bring him back from the graveyard so like wtv.”
(read more under the cut)
Tumblr media
This was like 2003??? I think I keep forgetting when this season came out but we had printers at this point. We had google maps and a printer.
I don’t think I’ve touched a map like that since the 5th grade, where we had this competition to make a hypothetical road trip across America. It was Awful, and if you won the competition to get from SF to New York with the shortest distance, you would win something like pizza and a cool engraved name plate. We did not win pizza, because I could not even unfold this asshole map.
And now we have Google so like thanks, Mrs. Lambert, it was cool, but I’ll never use that information again. I hope. It was such a vivid frustrating memory that these maps still fill me with anxiety to this day, hearkening back to my 5th grade self just desperately trying to use string to measure how many miles the freeways across the midwest contain. (spoiler: a lot)
How OLD is this kid? Rebecca’s like secretly a 68 year old. She’s secretly Mrs. Lambert.
At this point we had a swell in the music as each friend of Joey joined in to announce their willingness to risk danger and save him.
Tumblr media
Were they...not going to join him the whole time? It just seemed like a weird thing to bring up sooo after the fact.
Yami then turned to Duke and was like “but not you. You stay here” and he was like “Oh, thank gods.”
Tumblr media
Rebecca stayed behind because the animators don’t want to draw her. Honestly, she’s incredibly helpful and they were mad stupid to leave the only smart one in the car. But youknow...this team loves being mad stupid. It makes the show more entertaining.
As they left we had a weird aside where Arthur Hawkins reflected “Rebecca is having just a REAL hard time trusting Yami” and it’s like--Arthur Hawkins! You’ve been dumping on Yami for like an entire season, that’s why. Like don’t pretend you’re all on team Pharaoh now. Why ever stop dunking?
But youknow, character development, Rebecca is going to learn the trust the ghost that possessed her crush/best friend that she’s had for 2+ years on a kid who’s been living in Japan this whole time who literally forgot who she was 2 weeks ago. You trust that ghost, Rebecca.
Or not. I mean you really don’t have to. You don’t owe Yami anything, dude. You don’t need to blindly trust idiot men, Rebecca. You just do you. Trust that instinct of “is this guy not trustworthy?” because yep. Chances are if you’re having that thought, that he’s totally not.

Storyboarder!
Storyboarder what ARE you???
STORYBOARDER!
Tumblr media
after this followed a scene that I’ve seen gif-ed just so, so often that I assumed it was in a Yugioh Spin-off. I don’t know why I thought it wasn’t in this OG series, but I didn’t expect it to be here, in the Dartz season. But, it does make sense that this scene was under the best Storyboarder‘s direction because *chef’s kisses * it’s perfect. Every frame is a joy. The amount of sinister expressions on Mokuba, the level of sass coming off of Kaiba. It’s such a freakin shame that this man’s best work so far only lasts like a few seconds.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
PS my bro looked it up and this car salesman has a wikipedia page.
He also looked up if anyone has shipped this car salesman and it’s our lucky day because this ship does not exist with any human ever in the world. Thank you, humanity. But, they DID make a wikipedia page so maybe we’re just putting off the inevitable?
Tumblr media
I’m not even gonna cap it because I KNOW this is a gif you can easily download from everywhere but mm--this is a SOLID piece of animation. This animator is just flexing so hard, man. Yugioh did not deserve this much care and attention to detail.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shippers rejoice, Seto Kaiba did briefly consider helping out Joey (before he absolutely drove away in the opposite direction)
Tumblr media
(They’re clearly in the financial district already, PS. They are driving 5 ft to Dartz’ house.)
Tumblr media
At some point Joey nabbed Valon’s card and so now he also gets to wear a bunch of stupid armor outfits.
This one is weird! It’s very Kamen rider-ish...but it’s a color scheme that feels very valentines day. It looks hard to wear. Good thing it’s animated.
Tumblr media
I may need to capture this walk sequence though...if I still have the energy...the picture does not display his very energetic arms-in-the-air walk cycle I haven’t seen since that one Season zero episode. I dunno if it’s a reference to that, but I can’t think of any other reason why Tristan is walking like that.
Tumblr media
This is when Mai finally shows up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Valon lost his helmet during this fight, which lead to this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What a good note to end on.
Anyways, I have no idea what my update schedule will look like or be, so if you’re new here and you want to start reading these from the beginning, I have a link for that:

It’s probably way too late in the game for it after having, like, six spin-offs. But man...what if they pulled something like they did with Fullmetal Alchemist but with Yugioh, in that they have the series that kinda strayed from the og story, then because popularity, they came back with making an anime off of the creator’s vision?
I don’t mean to shit on the series that we got. I know my posts kinda look like I dislike it, but I truly think that there’s a charm to the Duel Monsters series (especially in the gem that is the 4kids dub), and I love that the card game has manifested a community of fans that still partake in the game and keep the series alive today. But how cool would it be if they made another series based off of Takahashi’s original idea to kind of coexist with the current anime as its niche, horror sub-series that doesn’t center on duel monsters?
What if we got that story where the anime shows Atem as that evil fuckin game master and how love and friendship changes his character drastically yet organically through time? I want MORE of season 0 Yami, not just early Duel Masters Yami where he just mind-crushes folks a few times and decides that’s-bad-for-reasons-I-guess??
It’s just...it’s very clear to me from the get-go that Duel Monsters is what it is just to make more money and focus primarily on the card game, and I feel like with that route, they’ve sacrificed the story and even the characters to a degree.
I just want a Yugioh series where duel monsters is kept at, like, maybe to 2 stories like what Takahashi was thinking before the card game kicked off. If they made a sub-series of the og Yugioh that focused more on plot and character development, I feel like they could really make something memorable without something as marketable as a card game.

(1/3) I don't wanna keep pushing Yugioh because I know that'll start to have the opposite effect, but also I didn't pick it up for years because I never got a proper summary of it; now it's one of only 4 manga series I own in full. Everyone just says "card games and friendship" because the anime had games that could last up to four episodes each and dragged on forever, plus 1.5 seasons of filler instead of adapting the first ~60 chapters of the manga. Meanwhile, the manga's like:
(2/3) High school boy that enjoys games is so lonely that he solves a cursed puzzle and gets possessed by the dark spirit of a gambler, and they use their combined gamer skills to play many games and make friends and also drive a man insane and burn another alive in book 1 alone. And then the author's editor was like, "Why don't you pick ONE game so we can make merch" so he grumbled and made the card game the focus, and while some duels are good, if there's a boring duel? Unlike the anime,
(3/3) you can skim it in a minute or two! However there're still good friends and a solid recurring rival and fairly in-depth Egyptology and (my favorite part) growing to be bros with the ghost in your head to the point of setting him up on a date by shoving control of your body into his hands and peacing tf out. If that's your cup of tea, 's up to you, but this has been my more accurate, meme-free, OG manga pitch! (oh, it's only sometimes a Jumanji situation, and motorbikes are the 3rd series)
Ah, so it’s something where the manga is better than the anime. *grins* Thanks! I do appreciate you taking the time to type all that out.
