If you want to start your dream project just start now!! Draw 10 pages, a chapter, whatever. Have fun and, if you see that it's not working, you will have learnt, you will have had fun, you will be able to go back to it later with even more knowledge. No effort is wasted.

But I've also realized that sometimes we are convinced that if we don't work on something with marketable quality, it's no good, that we should aspire to do industry-quality stuff. Nothing is as freeing as realizing that that's not true and that you can just draw whatever the hell you want and work on your stories and characters however it brings you the most fun.

I also just found out about the Goncharov Game Jam.

It appears this opened a day after after the meme took off.

Goncharov was first entered into Wikipedia between Day 4 and 5 (attempts to vandalise it with fake info don't count, incidentally – please knock that shit off) under List of Internet Phenomena. This was then expanded into its own Wikipedia page at the end of Day 5 because, according to the talk history: "the topic now meets the notability threshold for its own artice due to significant coverage in The New York Times and other sources cited." We're on Wikipedia, people!

And then we made The Guardian half a day later. So while the meme is definitely dying down to embers by now, it still stays winning.

PSA: if you've ever wanted to play an indie game made with unity, download it before january 1st 2024 or risk losing your chance! (for a list of unity games, i found this. can't say if it's completely comprehensive but it's a start)

if you're a game dev or aspiring game dev, i would check out unreal engine. it's widely documented, pretty easy to jump into, and free until you make over $1 million and then they take 5% above that- so if you made $1,000,001, epic games takes 5 cents. epic is a big corporation so they could pull some bullshit but it's less likely. and they have protection from future bullshittery if you stay with the current or older versions. beyond that, there are a ton of other free game engines out there or engines that are on the cheaper side (game maker for ex, only requires payment on export and is the game engine used for undertale/deltarune). so if you can help it, don't waste your time on unity!

and above all: fuck unity. indie games are so important and don't deserve to be fucked over by corporate greed

Hey y'all. Jack here, and I've got something important to say.

The first and only point of this blog has always been to share appreciation for the many wonderful animals we share our planet with. Outside of conservation, I keep posts free of politics or world events, because I figure most people get enough of that already, and I wanted to keep the focus on environmental education. However, I do need to make this post, because I am a human being and I can't pretend otherwise.

The genocide in Palestine cannot be ignored. The Israeli government is committing an unspeakable evil against Palestine, and the fact that they claim to be doing it on behalf of the Jewish people makes me ashamed to call myself a Jew. But that is all the more reason why I need to speak out, and why I encourage all of you to do so as well.

Educate yourselves: Decolonise Palestine is a good place to start. Take action: This is a US-centric document with plenty of ways to get involved. Reach out to your friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers-- Palestinian and Jewish alike. Do not be silent.

Lastly, if you are Jewish and you need a place to vent/work through the shame, grief, and horror of what Israel is doing, my ask box is open. Now more than ever is a time for solidarity, and to fully support Palestine we need to be able to lean on each other. Hate will not be tolerated, and any anti-semetic, islamophobic, or anti-Palestinian replies, asks, or messages will be blocked.

PSA from a dumb shit idiot

the in-game UI/settings backup does not save your account-wide macros. it only saves macros per character. if you use shared macros for complex UI operations like a full suite of pop-out hotbars, and you are depending on this feature to transfer these macros, you will have to redo them. backup your .cfg files and character-specific .dat files located in Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY XIV - A Realm Reborn and put them somewhere that even you can't possibly lose them. the game tells you this, but if you're like me and you forget all basic forms of literacy when text is too boring, you will never see this information

penumbra and glamourer backups are located in AppData\Roaming\XIVLauncher\backups by default. these are useful to upload to perhaps a cloud drive. maybe even a discord server. you could email them to yourself. you could put them on an external drive of some kind. in case you do not want to remake 69 outfits from scratch and recategorize all your mods

those fancy marty mcfly reshade shaders you paid for to Support The Creator? they clean the patreon permissions out every couple of months and you won't be able to download the thing you paid access to get. "i can download them later" LMAO clowned on. put them somewhere safe, brain genius

PSA from the Alolan rangers

This year, due to unusual cosmic activity, worm holes are going to be frequent, and this corresponds to a predicted rise in ultra beast sightings. The rangers have released information on how to keep yourself safe during the next 8 months until the wormholes die down:

Travel in groups and keep alert. We recommend keeping your pokemon out of their balls if feasible.

Familiarize yourself with the cries of ultrabeasts. [A link to a government website is attached with a soundbank of recorded ultrabeast noises]

If you are deaf or HOH, all service pokemon trained in Alola recently are trained to recognize these sounds, but if you have an older service pokemon or are from out of the region, the Deaf Society of Alola will be happy to loan you a trained pokemon for the duration.

Download the ranger alert app for your rotom dex or rotom phone in case of an encounter or sighting. Remember, it is a $5000 fine for making a false report.

Avoid unnecessary travel during this event. If you are someone who works with wormholes or has travelled through or been very close to one, we recommend leaving the region for the duration if you can or increasing security if this is not an option, due to the likelihood of ultrabeasts approaching you.

Ultrabeasts are frequently startled and confused by their sudden arrival here, and are much more likely to be aggressive or reactive. Do not engage ANY ultrabeast. Avoid eye contact and remain still.

Avoid picking up litter with your bare hands, particularly paper litter that seems folded.

Keep an eye on the skies.

If you find dead wild pokemon that have been drained of fluids, vacate the area immediately.

If you feel dizzy, confused or sleepy, leave the area. Pheremosa may be present. Wear a good quality n-95 mask to provide decent protection.

Avoid power plants if you aren't an employee there. If you are an employee, pay close attention to safety briefings and wear all provided PPE. If your employer is not providing PPE, anonymous reports can be made to the authorities here [A link is provided]

Avoid large forested areas and remain alert for a long, low rumbling noise. Stay away from unexplained wild fires.

Obey all evacuation alerts sent out, and keep a survival kit packed with clean clothes, important documents other necessities. A comprehensive list of essential items can be found at the Alolan governments website.

Avoid coming unto contact with naganadel toxin. This toxin is purple and slightly bioluminescent, with a sharp, bitter smell. It's powerfully adhesive and can quickly cause breathing difficulties. If accidental contact occurs, vinegar has been shown to begin breaking it down. Apply white vinegar to the area and contact emergency services.

Make note of stone walls in your area, and report if new ones appear with no signs of construction workers.

Stay safe and don't be a hero.

Important PSA: Do not ask linguists how many languages they speak. Linguistics is the scientific study of language, investigating things such as (but not limited to): how language can be modeled as a complex logic system; the cognitive processes and neurological structures that support the acquisition, storage, and usage of language; the biological and acoustic mechanisms involved in the production/perception of language; how language influences society and how society influences language.

Other things linguists do: work with communities to document or revitalize dying languages; develop dictionaries; work on language modeling software; consult for copyright litigation; reconstruct dead languages.

Really lucky linguists get hired by Hollywood to create fictional languages for sci-fi and fantasy blockbusters.

What linguists do not do: spend all day learning foreign languages. (Alas, if you are a linguist who enjoys learning foreign languages, you must do it in your free time, not during work hours.)

Also! Another important PSA: Any linguist who has learned, like, anything about language, WILL NOT JUDGE YOUR GRAMMAR! Do NOT apologize to a linguist for how you speak. Remember: no dialect is "more correct" than another. There is literally no objective criteria with which you can compare two languages or dialects and decide one is "better" than the other. If you are communicating successfully, you're doing language right!

!!PSA ABOUT TMC AND MY TMC CONTENT!!

Please read!

So, as you are all probably aware by now recently Alex Kister has been accused of some pretty heinous stuff. Truthfully, I believe the victims and even if the allegations are somehow false the behaviors being reported on some of the TMC cast and Alex as a reaction to it is appalling. I am truly fuming and absolutely heartbroken right now. I have literally tried to write this about 3 times today but I just can’t form the words to describe it as I’m struggling to process it. As you can imagine, I have come here to say that I cannot in good faith continue to be associated with The Mandela Catalogue anymore. I will not be making any TMC related content going forward. I do not want to be known for it, and I do not want to be associated with it. I know my page is heavily surrounded by it so I thought it was an important I made that clear.

Going forward, I do have plans to take my versions of the angels and demons and some of the ideas in the Human Disguise AU and make them their own story. I have put a lot into this story and these characters to the point it is barely TMC anymore anyways. I don’t think it would be hard to rework it to be something new. MV of the angels and demons also mean a lot to me I’ve spent a lot of time and energy on them. Truthfully, even before this came to light I was really considering making it an original thing. This was definitely the final nail in the coffin though. I’ll start on reworks and redesigns for that when I can. But for now I am going to focus on other things. I need a break from it right now and probably for a while. Reworks for the blog in general will definitely be happening soon. I will most likely go and delete a lot of posts/art, so just a heads up.

This is such a horrible situation for the victims and I am begging you to go show them your love and support. Please do not give Alex Kister or The Mandela Catalogue any of your money or time. People like him do not deserve a platform or the attention. I am really sorry to anyone who has been hurt by this situation. I’m sorry for what I’ve contributed. The document of the allegations is my pinned post at the moment, please share and take your time to read it if you haven’t by now. Please take care everyone and stay safe.

Wattpad's New AI-Review System and "The Purge"

What's Happening?

The past week or so, there have been reports of user's stories getting shadow-banned (delisted from rankings) and sometimes even removed. This is due to Wattpad's recent deployment of an AI-powered tool used by their support team. (Source) The tool is designed to aid Wattpad in flagging guideline-breaking content with manual reviews of the stories flagged. When a story gets flagged, it is "shadow-banned" (i.e. removed from rankings and searches) until it's been reviewed by staff.

If your story has been removed, you can contact Wattpad Support to appeal the decision.

Also important: Wattpad's "age of consent" rule has been updated. Previously, it followed the Canadian federal law of sixteen (16) years or older. On April 15th, 2024, the guidelines will be updated to reflect the new age of consent requirements of 18+.

That means for content including sexual acts between characters, both characters must be eighteen (18) or older. More tame acts (i.e. kissing, holding hands) between underage (16+ years old) characters is still fine and sex can be alluded to, but may not be described. Please review the News and Updates channel for the full text.

What Is The "Wattpad Purge"?

The "Wattpad Purge" is one of the terms given to Wattpad's recent surge in removing stories.

As mentioned above, the AI tool flags the content for manual review by a human. This simply means that it's the same process as before, just faster. Most likely, users will continue to encounter the same roadblocks they have before - little to no information about why their story was removed, no notification of removal, etc.

If what they said is true, the AI has no connection to the removal of content beyond flagging it.

Is this only targeting LGBT+-related content?

At the moment, this is only a rumor. There are a few reports of non-LGBT+ stories being shadow-banned. However, plenty of authors have reported their LGBT+ stories have been affected. I, personally, have had my LGBT+-related content shadow-banned, though I've noticed my favorite author's are not (albeit, they are popular stories).

What can I do?

Realistically? Not much. Wattpad's support team are notoriously slow and often times actually unhelpful. You can contact Wattpad Support and ask about your works being shadow-banned, but nothing is guaranteed.

But, what you can do - and this is unanimously recommended by old-timers like me - is, please for the love of God, BACK UP YOUR STORIES! It is the most important thing for you to do for any kind of projects, not just writing. Back it up! Save it on a flash drive, the cloud, on an external hard drive, CD, tape, whatever you have! Heck, write it down in a notebook if you have to!

Write it off Wattpad, copy and paste it to there later. (Related: u/Anna__V's "PSA: Don't Write on Wattpad") There are a variety of programs you can use! Microsoft Office (Word online is free), Google Docs, Apple's Pages app, LibreOffice, etc. Someone was even advertising a program they were working on (Sonovel), and it cloud saves! now its pretty common for rp blogs these days to have rules. right? you dont want to just bag any weirdo on this website, and as you can imagine bnha roleplayers are batshit crazy (see: conversion therapy todoroki) so mine are pretty strict and detailed. because ive been doing it long enough to be exposed to what counts as carbon monoxide poison from a screen. one of those rules is "if youre mutuals with people who write porn of the kids even aged up im blocking you we're keeping a ten foot pole on this". because as a 20 year old man i have a healthy disinterest in seeing paragraphs of teenagers fucking

so the dash is astir with talk of a guy writing age up bakugou porn and im like ok whatever. make a post bitching about it . mutual likes those posts but then the mutual is turning around and being buddy buddy with this guy so i dm the mutual like hey whats going on here . mutual is like "well why dont you talk it out with him hes not as mean as he seems i prommy" and im like sure whatever i can have civil conversation and if it ends with One Less Person writing weirdo porn then i might be able to get into heaven

once again: loses his damn mind. he makes a psa post about me talking about how im just some pussy infant and hes too HARD for me and shit and also they do bakudeku muffin roleplay in the comments of that post which is fucking insane

anyway. at one point while joking about the whole thing i called him a "wannabe bakugou kinnie" as a joke and apparently he felt a very serious need to address this

and im like holllllllllllllly fucking shit

you may have noticed that his posts are incredibly over-formatted. this goes for everything he does he is pouring a LOT of time and energy into typing his 9 paragraphs about how im an insane bitch or whatever. (if theres literally one thing i can give him credit on its that his graphic editing skills are kinda good. i will be honest) his rules document is also just as insane and features gems such as:

after a certain point i get dmd an old copy of a 130+ page callout he had a year prior and im like WHAT and it included his yugioh rp blog career and various allegations like having been involved in gang violence, doxxing, etc. also a picture of the hickies he bragged about leaving on his uwu pink glitter gf which looked more like he was trying to go for the killing bite but hey. yknow. apparently im a toddler idk how that works

along in this we also find his twitch account, which was under the name rxgelord, and it featured edited graphics of his real life face with bakugou. he posts selfies a lot too i wont share them even if theyre public but he has knuckle tats and a goatee and uses the greyscale filter. if this gives you an idea. he also had 5 twitch followers and detailed his desire to be a rapper/dj and im like holllllly fucking shit this guy cant be a real person. holy fuck.

anyways. skipping a lot of unnecessary bullshit and paragraphs of text with gifs from 2013 attached hes constantly going on about how we wont just "say it to his face" which i think is hilarious bc i was, the entire time. but im like ok fine you want me so bad

so i send him this. he posts about how "he won when he got all might" (for some reason hes calling my ex mutual by the character name. i dont know) and then hasnt posted in 4 days. he deleted his twitch. im a little worried bakugou. dont say that. may have actually chased this man off the internet . to go have real life sex with his real life girlfriend so he isnt so mad

anyway we ended up turning one of his posts into an eminem uberduck

im honestly probably forgetting something this was so much and it was so fucking funny and honestly im glad to have been there

PSA and Q&A

We're waiting until it's closer to sign-ups closing to properly check over people's wishlists, but from a brief glance, it seems a lot of people aren't listing enough, or any prompts.

Please list at least two characters and at least three prompts on your wishlist if you haven't already! This will make it easier on your santa if you give them an idea of what you want, especially if you get a writer as your santa.

Prompts can be, for example; having a picnic together; these characters playing videogames; trying on some new clothes. Your prompt doesn't even need to be a scene, particularly. You could list "character A looking cool" or "character B in this outfit" as a prompt. If you don't care at all what your santa does and are okay with it being a total surprise, you can list that too as a prompt. Anything to give your santa an idea of what you'd be okay with, and to give them a place to start on making your gift.

If you asked for a gijinka design or an OC/FC on your wishlist, please provide a link to their design in your wishlist as well. You can also embed an image of your reference itself into the document.

We got some questions on the sign-up sheet, so I'll be answering them down below, under the cut:

This event is open to everyone who signs up, provided they are able to fulfil our requirements for making a gift (ex: they must be able to make something finished; they must be able to take photos of their gift in good quality, if applicable; etc). We have no cap or lottery for participants. If you sign up before sign-ups close, you'll be in the event!

[Text: Out of curiosity since it seems like simaler skill level is winning, what happens with poeple with "low skill" not being able to find anyone to be paired up with, Similarly how do you determine skill level, I know someone may not want to paint and render for 8 hours only to get a messy cryaon drawing for example in return but this seems a bit like a recipe for disaster seeing as this can make people feel bad since they have "low skill level" sorry for lengthy question I just think it's important to bring up :)]

How we rank people's skill won't be public, of course, nor is it intended to make anyone feel bad. If that option wins, we'll be ranking people on a 5-point scale, with "1" being those less technically skilled, and "5" being the more advanced artists. We'll try to pair people of the same rank together, but people do not have to be paired exclusively within their own rank (a rank 2 person does not have to be paired only with another rank 2 person, for example). Instead, participants will be paired with those in the same general rank area as themselves. Someone in rank 1 may be paired with someone in rank 2, if needed, and someone in rank 2 may be paired with someone in rank 1 or 3, and vis versa, but they will not be paired with someone in ranks 4 and 5. Likewise, someone in rank 4 may be paired with someone in rank 3 or 5, but they won't be paired with someone in 1 or 2. I realize this explanation may sound a little convoluted, but I hope that makes sense.

Again, if that option on the poll wins, I should reiterate this ranking system is to be used only for the purpose of assigning people. There's no shame in being less technically skilled than another artist; everyone has to start somewhere and everyone has to go through that journey of art improvement. I hope everyone enjoys this event regardless of who they are assigned to and what gift they receive.
