Christmas Traditions with Baki, Retsu, Katsumi, Hanayama, Biscuit, Jack, Doppo, Yujiro, and Motobe <3

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!! I hope you are all having a fun, nice, peaceful holiday! I wanted to write a little something for the day (I actually started a full on Christmas fic but very quickly realized I would run out of time oops) so here’s a little blurb I whipped out during down time at work. It’s nothing huge, and it’s basically unedited, but I wanted to give you all a little present of sorts if I could. I know I take forever to update and post things, so thank you all for your patience and being wonderful superb humans. I love you all~

So HAPPY HOLIDAYS! If you don’t celebrate-I hope you have a bitching weekend regardless. B)

(Also this is my first attempt at writing something slightly romantic for Yujiro where he isn’t horrible, so there’s that loooool)

Your tradition with Baki is opening presents early. He never really had much of a holiday growing up, so the prospect of having a traditional Christmas with the person he loves gets him amped. Though you told him countless times you don’t really need material possessions from him, he approaches the task of gift giving with a sense of childlike enthusiasm. He’s thrilled to act as ‘Santa’ for you, feverishly going over in his head all the things you have ever mentioned wanting or liking in the course of your relationship. You in turn also have fun shopping for him, happy that you get to create pleasant memories for him during the holiday season to replace all the lackluster ones. The day’s leading up to Christmas mount his anticipation-he is as pumped to see and spend time with you as he is to exchange gifts. You’ll be lucky if you can get him to hold out tearing into presents by Christmas Eve, let alone the day of.

Your tradition with Retsu is preparing a big meal. Christmas isn’t something that Retsu ever really celebrated previously, but he knows it’s an important and fun time for you so he wants to make it special for the both of you. He’s delighted to spend the day with you, and takes great pleasure in cooking a holiday meal the two of you can enjoy. So though he may not go all out on decorations or other holiday activities, you are sure to have a delicious feast in preparation for you at home-a mix of your favorite holiday foods and some of his own favorite recipes. He pours his heart and soul into it, and is sure to shower you in love and affection throughout the day. Seeing your face light up in joy as you take in the food spread before you is the only assurance he needs that he’ll have the honor of being your personal holiday chef many years to come.

Your tradition with Katsumi is sightseeing. Christmas Eve each year is spent out on the town as you take in all the sights and activities the holiday season has to offer. You look at lights, listen to carolers, go ice skating, grab some hot cocoa/coffee. The whole day you stay linked arm in arm, smiling so hard your cheeks start to hurt. And when it’s time to wind down in the evening you both return home together to spend the remainder of the night wrapped up in each other’s arms, falling asleep to the favorite holiday movie or show of your choosing. He always seems to last longer than you do and considers those moments when you are nestled safely in his arms, right before he drifts off after you, some of the happiest moments of his entire life.

Your tradition with Hanayama is traveling. It doesn’t matter if you want to go someplace warm and tropical, or cold and frozen. It can be the same place each year or someplace new. As long as he’s able to whisk you away from the hustle and bustle of your daily lives and spend the season in your presence, he really doesn’t give a damn where the two of you end up. He wants to be around you and only you, the best present he can provide and receive being your happiness and love.  Just understand that as soon as your reach your destination, that’s when the real holiday magic begins ~

Your tradition with Biscuit is story reading. Biscuit’s life is chaotic, and the holiday season does little to lessen this burden. Sometimes it can feel like you barely have time or access to each other at all. That’s why on Christmas he makes sure to dedicate the entire day just for you. Nothing fills him with warmth and peace like Christmas night does, snuggled up together in front of the fire place, taking turns reading each other Christmas stories from an old, well-loved book you’ve had since childhood. When you first suggested it you were afraid he would find it silly or childish, but he was delighted by the idea. He loves listening to you speak, finds peace in the stories your voice weaves for him. He can think of no better way to spend the holiday.

Your tradition with Jack is a movie marathon. Like his brother, he doesn’t have too many fond memories of Christmas time to reflect on, so when you enter the picture you made it your mission to change this. Appalled that he hadn’t even seen the classics, you suggest a movie night, complete with homemade cocoa and all the Christmas cookies you can eat.  You were concerned he may not like the idea at first, Jack wasn’t one to sit around for long periods of time and you were worried the movies may just bore him. But as he held you firmly in his laps, basking in homemade treats and your silly commentary, you knew this was the right move. Even as he poked fun at some of the films, calling them ‘kiddie movies’ you were ‘forcing him to watch’, you knew the small smile on his lips and the way he held you close relayed what he was truly feeling. This was cemented when he finished the marathon with the question “Same time and place next year?”

Your tradition with Doppo is decorating. He humored you when you told him you wanted to do up your home for the holidays, and he let you go all out when it came to picking out and purchasing decorations. Unfortunately for him, all those decorations meant you needed help putting them up-and he was your prime target for assistance. Though originally he agreed begrudgingly, he ended up having a lot of fun decorating with you. It warmed his heart to see the smile that graced your lips as you dressed the tree, and he took great joy in the playful banter you shared over what decoration looked best in this corner of the room, or if the star atop the tree was crooked or not.  It was also nice showing off for you whenever heavier decorations needed to be assembled, he lived for the little blush the fell over your face as you laughed, telling him his flexing and posturing was ‘too much’. Next year he’d have to remember to purchase some mistletoe to add to the arrangement, he already knew the perfect place to hang it ~

Your tradition with Yujiro is skiing. You had never done it previously and were concerned how good you would be at it. It also didn’t help your anxiety that the one who invited you was Yujiro, and he had gone out of the way to clear out the entire slopes for just the two of you. But even with all your nerves the trip ended up being surprisingly peaceful and enjoyable. Yes, Yujiro picked at you and was obviously disappointed with your lack of immediate skiing skill, but he was also shockingly patient and helpful, giving you tips and guidance that made navigating the slopes much easier. Hours flew by without you realizing, and by the end of the day you were exhausted, but had successfully navigated a hill all on your own (albeit it was a beginner one, which Yujiro made sure to make fun of you for, but a slope is a slope in your humble opinion). Thinking this was a onetime deal you thanked Yujiro for the experience, letting him know it was the most fun Christmas you had had in a while. You were taken aback when he busted out laughing at you, explaining you weren’t anywhere near done-he’d repeat this every year necessary with you until you could get on his level.

Your tradition with Motobe is to build a fire. It’s a simple thing, and not necessarily a strictly Christmas event, but you both find happiness huddled up together on Christmas night by the fire. You relish in each other’s company, sipping a warm beverage, sharing a blanket, and talking about anything and everything under the sun.  The only time any banter occurs is when you argue over who needs to leave the comforting warmth to go get more firewood. This goes on late into the night until the two of you are too tired to keep your eyes open. The final words to leave both of your lips are affirmations of love and the promise to make the New Year great.

Do you know how many Fridays we have left in this year? 2. 2 exactly. That means 50 Fridays have passed us by. And, boy, have they passed us by in a flash. I want you to know that you PERSONALLY are responsible for what has happened to my life in the last few days.  I borrowed Clockwork Boys yesterday, December 24th, 2020, could NOT put it down, and burned through both Clockwork Boys and The Wonder Engine and am right now, December 25th, 2020, in the middle of Paladin’s Grace.  I am behind on several other fandom commitments, there are other books in my queue, I am forkin beside myself.

What. Have. You. DONE??????

This!!!! This!!!  This is my Kryptonite!!!!! Big sword-wielding subby murder-bots who have severe self-worth issues and are extremely competent warriors, but also have hearts of gold and are polite and care deeply about being compassionate to those who don’t happen to be big sword-wielding murder-bots!!!!  Constant and regular “I would follow you like a dog” Caine Wise-esque inner monologues!  Romance!  Swearing fealty!!!  And not just like, a weak-ass declaration delivered standing saying ilu 5ever babe, but proper, actual swearing of fealty.  Sword point down in the ground, hands on the hilt, kneeling with head bowed, you are my liege and I will serve you till the end of my days fealty!!!! 

I haven’t even gotten onto how great it is that Slate and Grace  fill my job competence kink and aren’t waifish ravishingly beautiful 20-somethings, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO ME

It’s not just that all of the paladin characters are like gifts off of my self-indulgent subby male character fantasy wish list.  It’s that the Clocktaur universe was deliberately written in order to respond to the overuse and abuse of self-loathing male heroes who were guilt-wracked over something or other.  The romances are as much about Slate and Grace and their own baggage and insecurites as they are about Stephen and Caliban and how angsty and paladin-y they are.  It’s about the characters actually caring about other humans, about poetic descriptions of magic and supernatural power, about how cool it is that Grace’s job gives her such a neat inner monologue and how Slate can still have a relationship with Brenner, etc etc etc.

For anyone looking for a blurb, The Clocktaur Wars is set in a magical fantasy world, where a forger, an assassin, a disgraced paladin, and a snooty scholar are set off on a quest to save their city from mechanical monsters. The series is complete at two books.  Paladin’s Grace is another adventure set in the same world, although so far unrelated. 

(and I have to be honest.  I HAVE to be honest.  I opened Paladin’s Grace so fast after finishing Clocktaur Wars because the blurb read “Stephen is a broken paladin, living only for the chance to be useful before he dies. But all that changes when he encounters a fugitive named Grace in an alley and witnesses an assassination attempt gone wrong.” Why am I LIKE THIS why am i PREDICTABLE)

So Tumblr has started to suggest posts tagged with Zenos, since they noticed I've liked and/or reblogged stuff with him recently. And I do like the character, but again, Tumblr is missing a really big thing about curated content.

See, I'm not following any ffxiv tags right now. I will occasionally go take a peek in them, but I haven’t since Endwalker dropped. (Even after I caught up to the MSQ.) There were the holidays and then being slammed at work and interviewing for a new job (and getting it!) and Navona and The Boy getting COVID. I am not on Tumblr as much as I'd like to be.

And I have plenty of friends who are playing ffxiv right now and its great. I love seeing the posts they're writing and the stuff they reblog. But here's the thing: I only really have the energy to deal with the stuff they post/reblog.

I fucking love this game, but I cannot deal with fandom right now. This is not calling out this fandom in particular, and not even a callout in general. I'm at my limit, and I can't deal with the nebulous unknown that fandom can be. Fandom can be amazing, but it can also be terrible. And I am not in a place to jump into this unknown.

But I know I can trust the people I'm following.

So, I'm fine with my friends who have made 10 Zenos posts/reblogs in a day. I love it, even! Please don't stop, ilu and you are wonderful. My problem isn't with Zenos, its with Tumblr making me feel like I'm suddenly in the Zenos tag. I really don't want to deal with unsolicited takes from strangers.

Frank Turner, big Frank Turner fan sort of indie English punk but with a lot of variation and is just 100% top notch dude. Try- Sons of Liberty, If Ever I Stray, I Wanna Dance, Silent Key, Not Dead Yet, Sailor's Boots, The Road. Saw him live as my first concert ever and the man played a full 2 hour set without stopping he's the Wessex Energizer bunny.

Edith Piaf if you like feeling a bit cinematic and a whole lot of yearning on top of being existentially overwhelmed. You go from singing love songs to revolution era ballads to biblical hymns she is always worth the time and is the only time I force french on anyone. Try- Hymn A L'Amour, Padam Padam, Milord, Mon Vieux Lucien, Efin Printemps.

In the same vein Cab Calloway!!!! Get a nice mix of him going on Spotify and you'll get a lot of fantastic music of the era, like Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, and their contemporaries. Great for a dinner night where you wanna vibe with some ghosts.

K.Flay is my go to for alternative pop punk rn cause she is amazing, lots of good songs, try Giver, Slow March, Nervous, and Blood in the Cut as an opening aperitif. The best of nineties/early 2000s white kid alternative and synthie r&b style vibes. She's also queer and amazing. She'll also lead you to Bishop Briggs who is equally fab.

Brandi Carlile!!!!! The lesbian counterpart to Orville Peck!!!! And if they ever to a duet together I think I will pass away, I will be fuckin decreased. All the best bits of old school johnny cash country music and the grit of great lyric writing and musical variation. Some songs are loud and sampling punk, others leaning hard into folk. Try - Raise Hell, Stranger At My Door, Hard Way Home, and Keep your Heart Young.

I have been struggling to listen to new music lately so these are not exactly revolutionary suggestions but I enjoy them all very much.

Hey! It’s me again, your GOT secret Santa. Could you please elaborate on what aspects of the Tywin/Joanna ship you like? They’re not a ship I’ve ever written for, so I’d appreciate it if you could tell me why you like them so much. Anyways, I hope things are going great with you and that you’re getting ready for the holidays 😊

I love Tywin and Joanna because this ship is ASOIAF in its simplest form, stripped down to the bare bones, the meaning made plain. 

In my opinion, ASOIAF is different from a lot of other fantasy I’ve read because it doesn’t focus on a magic system, and it doesn’t focus on a great war (we still barely even know anything about the Others). 

ASOIAF is different; ASOIAF is about what makes us human. (Even GRRM’s term for the enemy, Other, comes back to this central theme of our humanity, because it suggests that humanity is fighting against something other than human beings, something un-human, something inhumane.) 

Tywin is one of the most un-human human beings in the entire series. He’s also the villain that we get the most information about, and he still looms large over the text even in death. (Even in the brief glimpses of TWOW that he’s shared, GRRM keeps bringing him up.) GRRM has shown us all of these monstrous things about Tywin, but in doing so, he’s made the tiny glowing embers of Tywin’s humanity burn like the beacons of Minas Tirith. 

It’s our joy and our love and our laughter that make us human. It’s our sorrow and our pain. But more than all that, our humanity is the connections we make to other people. It’s shared joy, shared love, shared laughter. Shared sorrow. Our compassion. To build a society is to connect people, to share with others. Tywin and Joanna is a society of two. 

(That weirwood net of shared consciousness fascinates me - it’s an idea GRRM has written about before in his other works, and he keeps coming back to it.)  

So those handful of smiles: for his wife, for the birth of his (first two) children, for his greatest accomplishments (gruesome as they are). 

And the pain in this passage: “when Aerys II announced Ser Jaime's appointment from the Iron Throne, his lordship went to one knee and thanked the king for the great honor shown to his house. Then, pleading illness, Lord Tywin asked the king's leave to retire as Hand.” 

And the utter and absolute pain in this one: “With her death, Grand Maester Pycelle observes, the joy went out of Tywin Lannister, yet still he persisted in his duty.” 

It’s like a shot glass filled with sorrow. In AGOT through ADWD, the sorrow in those books is slow; it’s (mostly) meant to be sipped, and savored. But the way we experience Tywin’s pain, as GRRM writes it, it’s quick and it burns, and it burns out just as quickly as we move on to Tywin’s next atrocity. 

So, for me at least, Tywin and Joanna are like a distilled version of ASOIAF. It’s the moments we share that make us human, and when Joanna died, Tywin’s humanity died with her. 

That might not be the most helpful thing for writing a fanfic, so let me give you some other reasons:

My favorite short story is “The Last Rung on the Ladder”. I think I first read it ~20 years ago, and it still haunts me. It hurts. It’s about a brother and sister. It’s about taking things for granted, about the people we depend on, and about what happens when those people are no longer there. 

“You're my big brother. I knew you'd take care of me.” “Oh, Kitty, you don't know how close it was.” [...] “No,” she said. “But I knew you were [...] there.”

Maybe this applies to Jaime and Cersei too, and Tywin/Joanna are just a different iteration, but it’s what keeps me coming back: what happens when the people you depend on ... the people you think are always going to be there ... what happens when those people -- those lifelines -- are gone? 

Despite Tywin being (imo) a very social person, I think Tywin had very few real friends. In addition to being his wife, Joanna was Tywin’s friend, someone he could talk to, and confide in, and trust. Someone who made it all real. Someone who made it worth it. 

And I think Tywin thought Joanna would always be there, the same way that everyone in AGOT-ASOS thought Tywin would always be there, “eternal as Casterly Rock”. I think Tywin always imagined that Joanna would outlive him, like it never occurred to him that she would die first, but instead she died when he was in his early 30s. That’s life-shattering to have the rug pulled out from under you like that.  

Similarly, I think Joanna had this idea that she and Tywin would be together, but instead he was “often away”. We’re told that they were children together at Casterly Rock, but then at ~10 Tywin was sent away to be Aegon V’s cupbearer, and later he went away to war on the Stepstones, and then after her wedding Joanna had to be sent away because of Aerys, and we have Tywin sent to Lys at some point. What did it mean to her, that Tywin wasn’t there? For Joanna, I don’t necessarily think that Tywin not being there was entirely a bad thing, at least eventually, although I imagine it was painful at first. I think these forced separations from Tywin allowed her to grow, allowed her to eventually rule the Westerlands in Tywin’s name while he was away. 

The thing that I always think of when I think about Tywin and Joanna is this poem, “Mrs. Beast” by Carol Ann Duffy, and I always think of this line, “Bring me the Beast for the night. Bring me the wine-cellar key. Let the less-loving one be me.” The more loving one is Tywin in my mind, no doubt about it. (I played with this poem for Tywin/Joanna here.) 

There’s this scene I imagine in my own fanfiction, about a year before Joanna’s death, where there’s these silent tears, this despair on Joanna’s face, and Jaime asks his mother why she’s crying, and she says, “Because your lord father is home.” 

I think Joanna always loved Tywin, to the very end, but Tywin is a difficult person to live with. I think his homecomings eventually became bittersweet. On the one hand, the love of her life has come home to her across hundreds of miles through snow, through bandits etc, but on the other hand, whenever Tywin comes home, Joanna has to take a back seat. Tywin sucks all of the oxygen out of the room. Everyone has to take a back seat to Tywin: “It has been hard for Kevan, living all his life in Tywin's shadow. It was hard for all my brothers. That shadow Tywin cast was long and black, and each of them had to struggle to find a little sun.“

This is all kind of leading into another reason I like Tywin/Joanna in that it’s an exploration of gender roles, and the ... the limits that women are under in Westeros, even under the very best circumstances. With Joanna, she’s white, she’s filthy rich, she’s a top-tier noblewoman, she’s beautiful. Contrasted against Rhaella, Joanna has a husband who loves her so much that we get lines about Joanna ruling Tywin and how this man who never ever smiles smiled for her. But there are still limits. We’re told that Tywin was ruled at home by his lady wife. Joanna’s influence is restricted, it’s dependent on what power Tywin gives her. While Rhaella physically was confined to Maegor’s Holdfast, Joanna’s influence is confined to the domestic sphere. 

Westeros is a broken place, one that’s always been broken into little pieces (Seven Kingdoms, not one). Westeros breaks people. Like Mrs. Beast in the poem, I think Joanna was able to forget, for a time, about the world’s abused women. She was able to forget that Westeros breaks people, and that it especially breaks women. I think Joanna thought she was the exception, that she would have more, achieve more, do more ... and eventually I think she hits a wall, realizing that Tywin is her limiting factor, even as he lifts her up and grants her the power to do. 

It’s these limits that fascinate me about House Lannister as a whole. Like, the Lannisters are introduced to us as infinite. (Thinkin about this a lot lately.) Bottomless wealth, eternal life, unfathomable beauty, all I do is win win win. But over the course of the books GRRM knocks all of this down and shows us that there is a finite quality to House Lannister. Tywin dies. With Jaime, I think GRRM is exploring the limits of redemption imo. Cersei is going to hit a wall. It’s that the culture of House Lannister, their fundamental values -- they don’t work. 

Tywin is the poster boy of Westeros - he is the feudal system, he’s the face of its misogyny, he’s the walking embodiment of classism and income inequality and privilege and everything horrible about Westeros. 

I don’t think it was ever possible for Joanna to be dealt a winning hand with Tywin, The system is rigged against women, and a woman would have to break the system entirely to win. But Tywin is the system, so it just doesn’t work. 

I think of Joanna as a tragedy.

What was the last health scare you had? So I got blood tests done recently to check multiple things, and I got pretty nervous when my doctor stood beside me going through the numbers and what they meant. I was afraid she was going to tell me I had diabetes (runs in the fam, and my diet hadn't been great) or something, but I was fine. What is your favorite food to cook? Something in the microwave lmao. Do you listen to bluegrass music? Ew. What was the last novel you read about? Well it' s part of a series so it'd be hard to explain briefly... but dragons. That'll do ig, lol. If there is a tree right outside your window, what kind is it? There's a small one. Idk what it is. What is your favorite filling for a piece of chocolate? Caramel. What is your favorite thing to draw? If you take a look at my work history... I apparently love drawing meerkats screaming for one reason or another lmao. Do you like abstract art? Not very much. There are of course exceptions to this, but it's definitely not my favorite and sometimes doesn't even feel like "art" to me. Would you ever want to be a painter? I do believe out of respect though, that you should educate your children when "profanity" isn't allowed, like in school and such. You don't shove potentially toxic shit into your kid's mouth to teach them something. What age do you think is appropriate for kids to start watching horror movies with lots of gore? This definitely depends on the child. Are they spooked easily? How mature are they? Do they understand what's not to be replicated? It would vary with the film, too. 31. where would you like to travel? - everywhere, but as a couple there are very few places in which we would be completely safe in so our options are somewhat limited

the handmaiden!!! best movie best cinematography!!!!! im absolutely in love with the colors and the costumes and it has such a solid story and the actresses have great chemistry too,,, the message of the movie is so strong as well but i don’t wanna spoil sjfhkb (tw sexual abuse) 

sympathy for lady vengeance, especially the version that fades to black and white bc it’s so visually pleasing!!! there are several shots that are forever engraved in my mind like it’s such a shocking movie in the best/worst way (can’t give spoilers but.. it does get hard to watch??), the main actress is incredible, she has so many iconic lines and ugh!!! it’s just so good and im still thinking abt it to this day,, in general park chan wook’s movie have female characters that have agency so it’s really satisfying to watch !!! (tw rape, violence, blood)

eternal sunshine of the spotless mind is one of my favourite love stories bc it’s so unconventional, it has elements of sci fi but it focuses more on the main couple than anything else,,,, basically they broke up before the movie starts and the guy discovers that the girl erased her memory and he ends up making the same decision and it goes from there and i cried sm shgdvj i also love stories that don’t have linear storylines so that hits the mark for me

moonlight... lit rully poetic cinema...... it’s so tender but also so violent at times, like it’s a movie that doesn’t shy away from showing u sadness and suffering and it’s such a special movie (and it’s gorgeous!!!!!!) there r several lines in that movie that make me crazy,,, it’s all abt the lingering stares,,,,,, (tw homophobia, violence, drugs)

what we do in the shadows is simply the funniest movie ever, it’s a mockumentary abt vampires and thats all u need to know

the half of it!!! i just watched it and ugh sgjjbk it’s not a rom com, it’s more of a coming of age story and it’s so special to me bc i really relate to it since the director is a chinese american lesbian, and the main character too,,, i luv the cinematography and the connections between ellie and the other characters,,, it’s great

gone girl is probably the best thriller ever, it’s incredible, the plot is sooooo good and the execution is incredible like i already knew the plot twist before watching but it didn’t affect my enjoyment of the movie at all,, rosamund pikes as amy is just ugh i don’t even have the words!!! wheres her oscar!!! i recommend reading the book too (tw blood, men)

emma (2020) is an adaptation of one of my favourite jane austen novels and it was excellent!! the whole cast was perfect, the costumes too, and the colors r so pretty!!! like it’s such a pretty movie!!!!! it’s a love story ig but it’s mainly abt emma maturing, bc shes a privileged jerk tbh but shes still really endearing hsvdfgj basically she loooves matchmaking and she ends up hurting people bc she actually sucks at matchmaking (i won’t say more) 

pride and prejudice (2005),,, such a stunning movie, and ugh!!! they just know. they know what slowburn romance is!!!!! also keira knightley is really pretty 

rear window is one of the only hitchcock movies i’ve ever watched and i really recommend it!! it’s fun and i love that it only has one setting,,, basically the main character is stuck at home and spends his time watching his neighbors from his window HOWEVER one day he witnesses a murder!!! TUN TUN TUN!!!!! grace kelly is beauty itself in this movie as well hehe

roman holiday is another classic movie i love!! it has my girl audrey hepburn and shes a princess and basically she falls in love with a journalist and spends one day in rome with him,,, thats the whole movie and i loved watching it it’s so romantic

gentlemen prefer blondes is so iconic!!! i actually love the dynamic between marilyn monroe and jane russell, it’s such a fun movie and it’s a MUSICAL!!!! girls DO love diamonds!!!!!

birds of prey is one of my fave superhero movies, i adore the fight scenes bc theyre all so exciting and creative, i love harley quinn as a narrator and main character, all the actresses were excellent,,, im really happy it was the last movie i watched in theaters before quarantine

always be my maybe is such a sweet rom com i just love it, it’s so funny, it has so much heart, and it’s a childhood friends to lovers to strangers to lovers type situation (also. theyre both asian hehe)
