Sam, you are NOT a ā€œweirdo.ā€ The neurology of the human mind exists on a spectrum; ALL humans are *biologically* ā€œneurodiverseā€ and have extremely variable interior experiences. One of the most difficult concepts for ANY writer to grasp is that of ā€œother minds, other perspectivesā€, and on that you already WELL ahead of the curve. šŸ˜ŠšŸ˜Ž
Yikes, my response to this turned into a whole-ass essay so first, two things:
1. Thank you for the compliment, a number of people reached out to tell me that I write very well for people who see images when they read. That is extremely reassuring so I very much appreciate it.
2. Iā€™m about to say a lot of shit that is only vaguely, tangentially related to what youā€™re saying here so my usual disclaimer applies: I appreciate what you said and I am not yelling AT you, I am yelling NEAR you. :DĀ
So.Ā On the one hand, yes, humanity is diverse and we can only be ourselves, or a version of ourselves that is tolerable to live with. On the other hand, culture also sets down rules that say this is usual, this is unusual, this is acceptable, this is unacceptable. We don't live in a spectacular culture for "this is acceptable" but most of us are aware that what we think of as "normal" is narrow and fucked-up. But itā€™s tough to go beyond that to discuss how we relate to ā€œnormalā€.Ā
It's something I'm grappling with and it's not something that it's easy to grapple with visibly because of that -- because the minute you call yourself weird or a freak or anything that denotes "not normal", or even when you just talk about ā€œnormalā€ as a concept, people reassure you that normal is an illusion, it's a construct. Which is true! And itā€™s good to model self-acceptance for people who are still struggling with that.Ā
The problem is that it limits how much you can discuss feeling outside of normal. And I do feel that way, because of the ADHD diagnosis and other stuff too. I feel that way a lot, these days. Like, a painful amount. Like, a questioning who I am on some very basic levels amount. So...there have to be ways to talk about the reality of normal.Ā
While normal is a construct, itā€™s still there -- as a culture we have a concept of normal that matters, regardless of whether it ought. We donā€™t have great pathways to sayĀ ā€œHey, Iā€™m struggling with feeling like Iā€™m not normalā€ because people want to assure you that you donā€™t have to feel normal...but sometimes you want to, because normal is what is culturally approved and itā€™s hard to be an outlier. Worse, if youā€™re visibly outside of normal, we tend to very violently police you for it.Ā
Iā€™m lucky in that Iā€™m pretty ordinary-looking, so I donā€™t get policed very often, but Iā€˜m very aware of the policing of invisible disability because I have siblings with learning disabilities, and my whole family has some degree of mental illness. Lately I have watched my mother struggle because she needs aids to walk and feels like people are staring at her and saying sheā€™s old and of no worth, a drain on society. The world reinforces that by doing things like making her get to the airport FOUR HOURS EARLY in order to get wheelchair service (and thenĀ ā€œlosingā€ her name so she still almost misses her flight).Ā
You donā€™t have to be normal, but if you arenā€™t, you still have to put up with the dickheads who think you should be, who will punish you for deviance. There's a disparity between "healthy ways for you to feel about this" and "how society will feel about this".Ā
To circle back to my mother, who internalized the ableism and misogyny of the 1950s and 60s and barely escaped being labeled a Fridge Mommy in the 80s because of my brotherā€™s autism....I was raised in a family where there was a very strong value placed on being normal. It was particularly strong for me, because I was the normal one. My parents could not handle the idea that all of their kids had special needs. They needed me to be normal, not least because if I was normal I could help raise my siblings, which I did. And that's been my identity my whole life: the normal one.
Normal is a construct but unfortunately itā€™s the construct on which my entire identity has hung for forty years.
And my attitude -- not that this was conscious -- was that if you have to be forced into that role, if you must fulfill the exhausting demands of being normal, then you should also get the rewards. The more normal you are, the more power you have. Thatā€™s incredibly unhealthy but itā€™s even more harmful not to admit it happened. And so I have been shoving myself into this identity of ā€œOh no, thatā€™s not me. Iā€™m not disabled, Iā€™m not queer, Iā€™m not special, Iā€™m a mediocre white dudeā€ because to admit otherwise is to relinquish the protection of normal.Ā
So...I wish we had a word like ā€œnormalā€ but with an extra connotation of ā€œLook, I know normal is just a privileged idea of what everyone should be but itā€™s also heavily enforced in our society so we need to acknowledge it still existsā€.Ā
Iā€™m not normal. I am a weirdo. Iā€™m more a weirdo now than Iā€™ve ever been. There has to be a space to say that, to sayĀ ā€œNormal exists and Iā€™m not it and I feel fucked up about itā€ because how else do you rebuild an identity?Ā
I think it is important to reassure people that normal is an idea, not a law of nature, and I appreciate everyone who chimed in with that. But I think itā€™s also important to acknowledge that itā€™s really hard to suddenly find yourself outside of normal, and start thinking about ways in which we can support that struggle when we see someone stuck in it. Maybe disability activists have something to say about this and Iā€™m covering old ground;Ā Iā€™m not well-read beyond the basics. I donā€™t know what the answer is myself, Iā€™m still really stuck in the middle of this, but I think there must be more options open to us than the reassurance that normal isnā€™t real.Ā

šŸ˜ŽGot an unofficial eviction noticešŸ˜Ž
AKA my rent got raised and the apartments I live at do not fix anything I have requested for months to fix (like my oven and AC unit, so all my meals have been microwaved or cooked in a toaster oven and I have to have a bunch of fans blowing in my apartment just to keep it under 80 degrees in here) and so I've been a bit on edge debating if I want to move out or not, but I can't save the money to do so with such a high rent, but now the decision has been made for me because I was 5 days late on my payment this month and they told me I have 5 days to leave before I'm officially evicted. I could just pay up and stay but...fuck that.
So yeah this is just a rant post and it's why I've gone quiet all of a sudden and why I haven't posted anything. I want to write so bad but now I've gotta get out of here quick and find somewhere to stay. Once I've settled physically and mentally I'll be back to post again.
I can't catch a break I stg why it gotta be like this fr

New York City Hip Hop Playlist (YouTube)
Started building a unique playlist of hip hop tunes that originated from the city that gave birth to the genre in the first place: New York. Here we have a slate that begins in the party-oriented early 80s South Bronx and progresses all the way through the late 90s into a bunch of raw, underground, hot street rap fire šŸ”„šŸ˜Ž.
So, if you've been following me long enough, you know that my forte with these playlists is to load up on great obscurities, and I've got a bunch here, but I've also got some classic jams as well, all of which come courtesy of Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five and Melle Mel. There's shortened versions of two early hip hop cornerstones: "The Message," which was the genre's first ever lyrically conscious hit, and then the anti-cocaine anthem, "White Lines," which Grandmaster Flash actually had nothing to do with, even though Sugarhill Records slapped his name on it in order to help boost its record sales.
But speaking of anti-drug hip hop anthems, a lesser known one from around that same early 80s time period is The Funky Four's "King Heroin," which heavily interpolated The O'Jays' own "For the Love of Money," aka the theme song from The Apprentice (šŸŽ¶ money, money, money, money....mon-ay! šŸŽ¶). "King Heroin" is definitely not a completely unknown song, but in comparison to "White Lines," far less people are aware of it, and in total, it has about 62,000 plays on YouTube across a handful of uploads. Fun, catchy, early hip hop gold as far as I'm concerned.
But once we hit the mid-90s, that's when we really get into some of these underheard Big Apple rap goodies, like a pair of mid-90s boom bap cuts from a Harlem native called Raucous aka Sabotage, who at some point decided to leave an oversaturated US rap market for Germany. 1995's "Say No More" has around 1,100 total plays on YouTube and the Roey Marquis II remix of "No Way Out" from 1996 has about 2,400.
And Brooklyn's own mighty Mos Def aka Yasiin Bey makes an appearance on here too, on a rare remix of N'Dea Davenport's "Bullshittin'," which I'm pretty sure was produced by the one and only J Dilla. Super chilly synth tones on this one that's approaching 20,000 YouTube plays.
And lastly, Manhattan trio Missin' Linx supplies "M.I.A.," a song whose beat very well may have been jacked by Dr. Dre himself so he could release his iconic "The Next Episode" the following year. Both songs utilize the same main sample from David McCallum's "The Edge," but according to WhoSampled, either producer VIC was the first to ever sample the song for "M.I.A.," or one of his collaborators, Godfather Don, was the first to use it for underground New York rapper Scaramanga's "Death Letter" remix. Either way, although "The Next Episode" would come to be hailed as a late 90s west coast rap classic, Dre wasn't the first to sample that McCallum song. And "M.I.A." has about 176,100 YouTube plays while "The Next Episode" has managed to rack up hundreds of millions.
This playlist is ordered as chronologically as possible:
The Furious Five Meets the Sugarhill Gang - "Showdown" Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five - "The Message" Grandmaster Flash & Melle Mel - "White Lines (Don't Do It)" West Street Mob - "Mosquito" Funky Four - "King Heroin" Dana Dane - "Something Special" Nine - "Any Emcee" Raucous a; k; a Sabotage - "Say No More" Raucous a; k; a Sabotage - "No Way Out (Roey Marquis II Remix)" Smoothe Da Hustler - "Hustlers Theme" N'Dea Davenport feat. Mos Def - "Bullshittin'" D.I.T.C. - "Themes, Dreams & Schemes" Missin' Linx - "M.I.A." Mr. Supreme feat. Al' Tariq - "Run the Show"
And this playlist is also on YouTube Music.
So, we currently sit at 14 songs with a runtime of one hour so far. And maybe when I find more to add, I'll have enough songs to make a Spotify playlist too.
Enjoy!
More to come, eventually. Stay tuned!
Like what you hear? Follow me onĀ SpotifyĀ andĀ YouTubeĀ for more cool playlists and uploads!

ooc. just need to pop in quickly and share that--after almost 80 games--I finally broke into GRENINJA TIER (tm) on Pokemon TCG Live. Holy moly climbing in this game is slow (and I didn't make it easy on myself), but we are officially Great Ball Level. šŸ˜Ž
Tumblr media
During the journey, I tried a couple different decks...but the one that spoke to me the loudest didn't have Arceus, Giratina, Gardevoir, or any fancy VSTARs or EXs at all--just budget-friendly Flamigo and his silly little bird friends. United Wings against the world!!
Tumblr media
Summer's been so hectic, and this has been my comfort game in a major way lately. I'm hopefully going to get back into the swing of writing things/popping back on Discord over this next week--I think this little break did me some major good. See ya soon!

OK, that edit of Pietro and the Guardians with the lyrics of "Heroes" is GORGEOUS but it's EVEN BETTER when I remember that in the Holiday special, it is revealed that they named their new ship the Bowie. So, Pietro understood why the Benatar was the Benatar if I remember correctly. Pat Benatar, David Bowie... I love how the Guardians are canonically huge music nerds. They love music so much xDDD If that doesn't help Pietro feel more comfortable (and having Mr.Dibbles with him) then idk what!
If you celebrate Christmas, Silence, you could watch the Holiday special next month. It has nothing triggering, it is mentioned that it was Ego who actually made Quill's mother fall ill (this was actually revealed in Vol. 2) but it's not shown, just mentioned. This special is not triggering, it's super wholesome, WELL I mean Kevin Bacon gets kidnapped, LOL, but... it's super cute, and I cried a little lmfao. I CAN'T WATCH A SINGLE GOTG THING WITHOUT CRYING! BRUH!!
Also don't think you're weird for enjoying graphic horror movies. I am also a fan of horror. When people get killed in a horror movie, we know it's all a lie, it's this fake scenario, it's fiction. The scene where Quill loses his mom... is much harder to watch because it's more 'intimate', the hospital is dimly lit, they talk in whispers, Quill's grandpa talks to him softly. It's a completely different atmosphere and it feels real. Personally I cry through all GotG-related media. Yup. With style šŸ˜Ž
{out of breath} Yeah, Pietro likes to listen to music too. It helps siphon off some of his excess stress and energy, and it gives him something to focus on if he's upset. He likes 80s rock and things so that's why he knew who Pat Benetar was. He's big into Bon Jovi, heh.
I don't overly celebrate Xmas, but then again, I don't overly celebrate any holidays except for Halloween. I just don't have time, with work, health issues, and taking care of people. So in recent years I've just stopped doing much for the holidays. I'm Wiccan, personally, so I get more into the Winter Solstice and Yule and the nature aspects of winter in general, rather than Xmas, but I was raised Roman Catholic, so the rest of my family celebrates Xmas.
I want to watch the GotG Xmas special, but the main reason why I don't is because I thought it came kindof late in their whole timeline, so I didn't want to spoil a lot of things if I watched that first. But I guess probably the major spoilers I already know about, so if you're saying there's nothing earthshattering in it as far as major plot points, I will watch it. I need to see Mantis, plain and simple. I saw a few seconds' worth of a clip of her with the giant, novelty-sized candy cane, and I NEED MORE. XD

What are some of your PokƩmon that you remember the nicknames of?
What is your favorite PokƩmon movie?
(I just rewatched Pokemon the First Movie, Mewtwo Strikes back, like, last week. Last time I watched it, I think I was, like, maybe 12? So much nostalgia. I love Mewtwo so much in that movie šŸ„ŗ. Sounds weird, but I think I had a crush on him when I was a kid, lmao)
Do you collect PokƩmon cards?
What is your favorite type of PokƩball?
Whatā€™s your favorite PokĆ©mon?
| pokemon asks |
ā—‡ I'm not very good at coming up with nicknames for mons that aren't just references to other things or names I've seen the youtubers I watch use šŸ˜…. But that aside I remember: Slippy the Clodsire, Tadpole the Swampert, Kiro the Greeninja, Firestar the Fennakin, Hugo the Snorlax, and Edgey the Decidueye.
Definitely my favorite movie is Lucario and the mystery of Mew. It has two of my favorite mons as main characters how could I not xD? Also all the aura stuff and the stuff that happened in the past was just so cool to me.
Tumblr media
Mewtwo Strikes back is also pretty awesome! It's definitely up there with my favorite pokemon movies! I forget who voiced him but they did a really good job.
I briefly tried to get into Pokemon cards around late elementary school and ended up getting about 80 maybe? Most of them were through a tin. Though I tried to learn the game it seemed much more convoluted and needing more materials than yugioh so I gave up on that pretty quick which made me not wanna collect if I couldn't actually play a game with them.
Beast ball design is pretty awesome šŸ˜Ž
Prooobably water. Very diverse and has a lot of species and overall good offensively and defensively. Fighting and dragon is close seconds!
Favorite mon is a tie between Swampert, Lucario, and Grafaiai šŸ˜Š

Best wishes for 2022!šŸ’–šŸ’–šŸ’–
This is a bit late, but a day ago, I've received some very heartfelt shout-outs from some users of the yujikiri community and I am just speechless...
usually I'm used to being ignored sdfghjkl
Never would've thought that I would become this acknowledged by yall. Infact, I'll have to confess that there were days where I wanted to quit the yujikiri fandom---due to imposter syndrome, burn-out, and other negative things, but this blows all of my concerns out of the water. I'm glad to have put life in the fandom and I'm glad that yall have welcomed me into it. If it weren't for people like you, then this blog would've deactivated a long time ago, with me disappearing from the web and possibly the world lmao.
Reading all these really felt like a graduation that I needed. Thank you for never giving up on me, @lost-in-yujikiri (the absolute yujikiri overlord), @undinebluestar @transboykirito aswell as one of my first and biggest followers and nasty-fanboi bestie: @zodiac-senpai .šŸ’ŖšŸ˜Ž this blog couldn't have kickstarted without your engagement!
I also like to give shoutouts to @momochizu & @kappuccinoe (previously momoinoe) for being the most amazing and friendliest yujikiri artists that actively draw them, (friggin love how they color and their fluffy shoujo-esque style) aswell as @thegayfromrulid for being one of the influences that got me into Yujikiri, and also @yui-mhcp001 and @bobgoesw00t for all the great tags&reblog comments. šŸ˜‚šŸ‘Œ And all of my other followers! Thank you so much.
I've watched the yujikiri fandom from afar for around 2 years before finally stepping into it with this account during the time Memory Defrag closed. I went from a lurker to a content-creator/provider, and now I've stood here for a whole year. Wowzers. Also, this blog hit over 69 (...( Ķ”Ā° ĶœŹ– Ķ”Ā°)) followers, already in the 80s. That's absolutely insane. Hopefully I can provide content good enough to hit the 100 mark. Thank you for being with this Memelord. šŸ’„šŸ¤˜
My next plan for this blog is to start-up my YouTube channel, Do more articles/translations on Yujikiri Doujins, Start publishing my fics, aswell as share more of my own art. (Yes I draw lmao)
Well then, Yoroshiku onegaishimasu. šŸ’„šŸ’–šŸ’ŖšŸ™‡ā€ā™‚ļø

Are you a gold star lesbian?
1. I'm not a lesbian. Because of my autism I feel a little disconnected from any concept of self or identity (it's more a collection of things and traits and people say "this is part of your identity" and I'm like "ok, if you say so"), but at this point I'm not interested in anyone.
2. Please be aware that you just asked a minor about her sex life. I could be 17, sure, but I could be 10 or 11 as well and you wouldn't know.
3. I know that "gold star lesbian" has many meanings outside of Tumblr, but on Tumblr it's mostly TERF/radfem rethoric, so if you're not a TERF or radfem you might want to avoid using it. It is exclusionary towards bisexuals, pansexuals, etc., and stigmatises survivors of sexual violence.
4. If you're a TERF/radfem and think you can teach a naive minor gender essentialism I might have to disappoint you: My big brother (almost 15 years older) is gay and wouldn't shut up about queer history when I was a kid, and both my mum and my grandma are intersectional/inclusive feminists. There's a nice picture of my grandma on a protest somewhere in the late 70s or early 80s too šŸ˜Ž

do you have any frieza fic recs? any ship, but I'm partial to yamza and friku c:
Oh boy, do I? Well I guess itā€™s time to create a master list of sorts!
My sad ass knows a good 80% of frieza fics (I think I donā€™t fuck with fanfiction.net) so Iā€™m gonna compile my personal favorites! I am a godless being and have no bounds. A lot of these fics ive read awhile ago, but Iā€™ll try and remember the plot and things that took place. Anyways,
Yamza:
Red Currant - Basically the main character (imo) of Yamza fics. I remember staying up late just to finish this novel-like storyline. Honestly forgot what the plot was but I do remember a cute and wholesome ending. This fic also has a few sequels after the main story ended, so thereā€™s also that to look forward to! I just know itā€™s very good so pls read ā™”
https://archiveofourown.org/works/13783743
Half a World Away - If Red Currant is the main character, then HAWA is its main supporting character/lead. I honestly mixed up the two because of similar chapter length and the fact that I stayed up and read this fic for days as well. This fic is basically Yamcha and Frieza blind e-dating. I love the slow burn and the fact that they have no idea about the otherā€™s identity which makes it even more of an enticing read.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/18250139
Perfect Stranger - A cute fic where Yamcha wishes to become stronger but becomes an icejin instead! Where could this possibly go wrong? ā™”
https://archiveofourown.org/works/23322805
Free Of Charge - I specifically like this fic bc of its different take on writing Friezaā€™s character and his position/role. Itā€™s a little out of character but due to the circumstances and setting of this fic, it works out and is honestly a refreshing take on his usual, one-way street characterization. Itā€™s an ooc way of writing him that doesnā€™t annoy/irk me and thatā€™s a very good thing because I typically hate an OOC Frieza.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/14452473
Donā€™t Look Down - This was amazing and thatā€™s all I can remember. Thatā€™s how I tend to feel about all of Majiā€™s fics anyways so to keep it short. Frieza is a possessive clingy little bitch, so basically himself. And they fuck a... lot? I think? They do that in other fics a lot but I canā€™t remember. I know the plot is amazing so šŸ˜Ž
https://archiveofourown.org/works/25044043
Survive to Save - This ones a surprise. It has one of my favorite character so :>
https://archiveofourown.org/works/15122213
And those are most of my personal favorites from that category. I will recommend my two favorite Yamza writers/friends because they have other amazing fics that I felt would make the list too long to add. You can read their works here:
https://archiveofourown.org/users/SkinsT/pseuds/SkinsT
https://archiveofourown.org/users/SecretWeaponSeven/pseuds/SecretWeaponSeven
https://archiveofourown.org/users/MajinPiccolo/pseuds/MajinPiccolo
Anyways time for the other ship!
Friku:
In Discordant Equilibrium - Honestly one of my favorite fics of all time. If Iā€™m going to be bold, I will say that this is the main character of the entire Dragon Ball fanfiction community, argue with the wall. Kidding, but seriously. This fic is just.... beyond words, it changed my life and cleared my skin. It delved deep into depth about Friezaā€™s character and I think thatā€™s what I loved most about it really- The easy way to win me over is 1. slow burn and 2. Make a deep mental analysis about x character. This fic is amazing, long, slow burn I think? And just beautifully well written. Not enough words can be said about this one.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/26918002
A Score To Settle - Basically a fic where they fuck. A beautifully-written fuck, might I add.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/16523723
And tbh.... thatā€™s all I have for friku sadly. I just am not into the current Friku fics currently out right now and thatā€™s not against the ship or the writers. Friku is a ship Iā€™m not too obsessed with unlike the others and itā€™s just. The topics of the current fics do not interest me. And that is nothing against the works/writers bc I think they are still talented and their work is still very much appreciated regardless of my taste ā™”
Now onto the subcategory that i sadly and disgustingly know too much about. And since you didnā€™t request outright, Iā€™ll just show you my top 4.
Frieza x Reader:
God fucking help me now
Injuries - If you want to fuck Frieza in the woods while heā€™s at your mercy, this is your fic.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/24831085
Changing - This oneā€™s on Deviantart and itā€™s the only way I can read this amazing fic so.... despite the weird format that it has, I still think itā€™s worth a read. I forgot about the plot but I think itā€™s like.... Frieza makes you his pet?? Blah blah blah, you guys fall in love...???...!!! Very well written is what I can remember I am tired ā™” (read the complete fic by finding the other parts and opening a new tab. Thereā€™s part 1,2,3 etc.)
https://www.deviantart.com/bunnymommy16/art/Changing-pt-1-Frieza-x-Reader-601133485
Blackmail in Winter - I know this one is darker than most on this list but I really like the fic! Itā€™s a series of unfortunate events, basically your typical Frieza x Reader (the unfortunate event being fucking Frieza). Despite the fic not being complete, I personally think that where it ends right now might as well be the last chapter.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/5386442
Teardrops - One of the best Frieza x Readers Iā€™ve read and this time Iā€™m not a sex slave on his ship! Yay! Anyways, takes place during FighterZ where youā€™re the little voice in his head that controls his body/actions.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/14445294
Perversions of Quiet Soldiers - An amazing fic by my bestie-westie (pls read it, itā€™s so good pls pls pls) and it actually gives us a Frieza WHOS IN CHARACTER and itā€™s just such a lovely portrayal of him. A unique plot that drives up suspense and you never know whatā€™s gonna happen next! It is more ā€œspicyā€ of a read so proceed with caution! :)
Anyways, 284843 years later. Thank you for asking and for reading my little master list! I hope and pray to god you didnā€™t read most/all of these already and I hope I gave you something new to read! And if not then at least my followers can look at this little list if they want ā™”. Thank you anon šŸ„³

In an attempt to piss me off on purpose a friend of mine likes to suggest stupidly early times to come pick me up.
Example, he is coming at 9am tomorrow to take me out for the day. It's Sunday. Nothing will be open that early.
So I said sure. I'm normally awake by then. And the knowledge that if he wants to turn up at my house for 9 he will have to get up at 7 and has thus sufficiently kicked himself in the face is enough to satisfy me.
"oh, I don't mind. I like getting up early."
Every time you suggest early times and I agree you turn up late cause you didn't have time to eat breakfast, so stopped at McDonalds. Then we get where we're going early morning and realise your dumb.
If I do this enough you may realise you're not funny.
Problem though is that I stayed up late watching Michael Palin's around the world in 80 days, which was filmed in 1988. Woops.
Jokes still on him though cause I don't actually give a shit about whether he turns up and I'm still in my pajamas cause it's his stupid idea. šŸ˜Ž

Now That's What I Call Music! 49 2001 Pop / Teen Pop / Adult Contemporary / R&B / House / Hip Hop / UK Garage / Trance / Dance-Pop / Pop-Rock / Pop-Punk
Finishing out the week by continuing this little UK journey that I've been on recently with a trip back to the middle of 2001. Here we have a double-disc dispatch from the incredibly prolific and pervasive Now That's What I Call Music! series, which is an enterprise that Americans have been deeply familiar with since the late 90s, but Brits have actually known for far longer, since it originally exclusively launched in the UK in 1983, and proved very successful since jump.
youtube
Now, as you could probably guess, there are definitely similarities and differences between the US and UK versions of Now. One, UK installments from the main series are double-disc affairs, but US ones are only single-discs; and two, plenty of hits manage to chart in both places, but a lot of songs also never end up crossing the pond in either direction. And a good portion of the UK hits that don't make it Stateside tend to be electronic and dance tunes. Pretty much since the advent of the acid warehouse parties that took place in the UK during the late 80s, Brits have been far more receptive to that kind of stuff than the US has.
And that brings us to the first song that I really wanna highlight today: British duo Zero 7's totally blissed-out vocal downtempo classic, "Destiny," which features the voice of the one and only Sia. If you're an American, the first time that you were probably ever exposed to the facially-obscured South African superstar was when she dropped "Chandelier" in 2014. But other parts of the world had known her for a lot longer than that, and maybe if you had on the right adult alternative station in the US, or watched MTV2 at the exact right time, you would've caught "Destiny" too, but I think if you had asked 99% of Americans back then if they knew who either Zero 7 or Sia was, they'd have absolutely no idea. This tune is a simply terrific piece of smooth, acoustic guitar-led late 90s downtempo beauty, though, and with some dubby effects on it too, it makes for a real, immaculately melty, sink-into-the-bathtub kind of vibe šŸ˜Œ.
And on the pure dance tip, we've got a few sweet cuts, but nothing really quite hits like Roger Sanchez' "Another Chance." I gotta admit, I kind of somehow forgot about this jam altogether, but it's such a nice slice of early 2000s house, and I'm really thrilled to have been reminded of it again with this comp. Sanchez crafts a lot of this tune by sampling from Toto's 1982 soft rock power ballad, "I Won't Hold You Back," and that includes the voice of the group's lead singer, Steve Lukather, too, whose calm and reflectively plaintive words are made shimmery by Sanchez himself here šŸ˜Ž. "Another Chance" managed its way all the way to the top of both the UK singles and UK dance charts, but it did absolutely nothing in the US, which is a total shame!
Almost everything else that's good and/or fun on this album was also big in the US too, though, and those tunes in particular should give any American who remembers 2001ā€”before that big, main event, of courseā€”a very sweet nostalgia rush indeed. We have one-hit wonder Wheatus' "Teenage Dirtbag," blink-182's "The Rock Show," the different version of U2's "Elevation" that was on the Tomb Raider movie soundtrack, OutKast's "Ms. Jackson," Destiny's Child's "Survivor," Dido's "Thank You," Janet Jackson's "All for You," and Nelly's "Ride Wit Me." So a really fine array of classic, poppy bangers there.
But, folks, we also have to talk about the complete and utter schlock that's on here too, because despite how many enjoyable tracks that are on this thing, there sure are quite a lot of plainly bad ones as well. And most of it appears to be just straight-up British pop, which is not to be confused with the often very good rock genre of Britpop. To be clear, there are definitely superb British-made pop tunes from this early 2000s era, but this 49th installment in the Now series doesn't have any to offer; and I have no idea how or why Geri Halliwell aka Ginger Spice's totally limp cover of The Weather Girls' "It's Raining Men" ever got to be a #1 hit in the UK, but that shit is really e m b a r r a s s i n g, man. And a lot of the rest of this pop sounds like music that was specifically targeted at nine-year-old girls too, so, diabetics, beware, because this stuff is *really* treacly.
Always love to sift through these UK editions of Now because they tend to be a lot more eclectic than their US counterparts, and while putting up a double-disc with every installment increases the chances of getting more good tunes, I also understand that it also naturally opens the door for more crappy filler as well. But at the end of the day, I really can't resist a good chunk of the electronic and dance music that gets put on these things, so if I have to endure some uninspired Spice Girls solo singles along the way, then so be it šŸ˜….

Just the Best 2/2001 2001 Pop / Euro-House / Trance / R&B / Pop-Rock / Europop / Pop-Punk / Dance-Pop / Hip Hop
God, do I really love going through theseĀ Now That's What I CallĀ Music!-type comps from Europe. Late 90s/early 2000s releases like these always make for such fun, eclectic trips down memory lane, but from the perspective of a different region of the world. Our top 40 charts in America share a lot in common with other places, and that leads to a nice nostalgia rush for everyone involved, but there's also a lot of music we don't share in common at all. So the goal when listening to these ephemeral things is to get some of that good nostalgia, discover a few sweet tracks that you werenā€™t previously familiar with, and then hopefully find something so patently absurd and terrible that you really can't help but just smile at how ridiculous it is. And fortunately, I was able to tick all three of those boxes with this 28th dispatch from Germany'sĀ Just the BestĀ series.
So let's start with all of this goofy and gaudy, brain-melting Eurotrash madness first, because that happens to arriveĀ immediatelyĀ on this double-disc in the form of an unbelievably awful andĀ BIGĀ nu-rap-metal cover of, yep, you guessed it, "Kumbaya," by Mittermeier vs. Guano Babes. But getĀ this, y'all (as I pull up a chair and proceed to sit in it backwards): they didn't actually end up calling their version of the song "Kumbaya;" they called it "Kumba Yo!" instead, which should really give you an idea of just how cool this song actually is šŸ˜Ž. I mean, they even loaded it up with turntable scratches and there's a quieter beatboxed portion too! It really is such a dynamic work!
But we're really only just getting started here, folks, because later on in this first disc is also an utterly mindless Italian Eurohouse groove by a group called The Pizza Boys, whoĀ deliverĀ their debut hit, "Oh Le Le," with verses about pizza pie that sound like they're being sung by a robot! And, honestly, does it really get more Italian than that?
Tomato, mozzarella Pizza bella, pizza bella Salami, margherita Pizza pazza, dolce vita!
And then there's this group of Danish teenage girls called Little Trees, who end up supplying a piece of manufactured, cotton-candied Europop fluff in...wait for it..."Help I'm a Fish," which apparently served as the title track for a 2001 animated box office bomb by the same name (also calledĀ A Fish Tale, which is *not* to be confused with the much more successful 3D-animated 2004 film,Ā Shark Tale), and also somehow managed to fall just outside of the top ten on the UK's Singles chart as well. I've pretty clearly never seen this song's corresponding movie before, but this definitely feels like one of those soundtrack tunes thatā€”just like how cheesy rap songs used to do it in the credit rolls for family-oriented blockbusters in the 80s and 90sā€”explains the plot of the movie through its very own lyrics. So I think this flick's about the wacky adventures of a kid who gets turned into a fish after ingesting a magic potion. But thankfully, the ending isn't spoiled through the song, so you'll just have to watch it for yourself in order to find out if the kid ultimately chooses in the end to go back to being a human, or if they decide to remain a fish. It's all so suspenseful, I know, but guess what else? The English-language version of the movie also happens to star not only a then-completely-unknown Aaron Paul, but also...Alan Rickman?!?
Alright, enough of this lunacy. Next section.
Let's get to the nostalgia portion of this post, which actually won't be very long, because I think there's only three songs across these two discs that actually turned out to be hits in the States: one-hit wonder Wheatus' radio-friendly nerdy Hot Topic anthem, "Teenage Dirtbag" (currently stuck in my head), which features frontman Brendan B. Brown singing every vocal part, including the falsetto of the female character that he himself is smitten with; the Britney Spears ballad, "Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know," which was co-written by Shania Twain and didn't actually chart in the States because it was never released as a single here and only aired on the radio; and then brief R&B star Joe's "Stutter," which, much to my surprise, actually managed to topĀ Billboard's Hot 100 chart for four whole weeks back in 2001?! šŸ˜Æ An okay slate overall, I guess, but usually when it comes to Euro comps like these, somewhere between about a quarter and a third of their selections are songs that were popular in the US. So, on the early 2000s US nostalgia front, this release seems to be a bit of an anomaly.
And now, to finish with something else that also came as a bit of a surprise: some pretty decent dance tunes. Most of the time, these comps might come with one or two good dance tracks, and then the rest will be these disposable hunks of plastic junk that feel inexplicable as to how people ever unironically enjoyed them in the first place. And, to be clear, there's still a bunch of those types of tunes that are on here (see Gigi D'Agostino's monotonously stupid "Super (Riscaldamento)," featuring Albertino, for example). But there's also a good amount of tracks on this release that, I think, feel both pretty fun and well-made too. Stuffy trance snobs may still bristle at the songs that I'm going to list as highlights here anyway, but I really enjoyed the tribal drum-infused "Played A-Live (The Bongo Song)," by Safri Duo, as well as Airheadz' "Stanley (Here I Am)," which strangely goes on these brief trip hop detours that smack of Dido's "Thank You." Plus, there's a *really* good vocal house tune from French group Superfunk too called "Last Dance (And I Come Over)" that feels kinda perfect for a pool party.
So, another long and strange turn-of-the-millennium trip through the nutty German mainstream is in the books here. Didn't really end up getting the nostalgia rush that I thought I was gonna get, but the unexpected dose of good dance tunes made up for that anyway. And that small handful of extremely tacky and beyond-the-pale Eurotrash could also definitely come in handy for the next time I end up reaching a plastered state of delirium as well šŸ„“šŸ˜….
