Guys bbc merlin is trending. And we’ve made it trend only because the official Merlin twitter changed the bio and tweeted for the first time in ten years. The power of this fandom is unmatched. I'm having this conversation with a friend about fandom and I thought it might not hurt to put a reminder out into the world:

Fandom is a two-way street. At one end, you have the creative types: writers, artists, vid makers (a dying art these days), the meta-commentary-writers. At the other end of the street, the folks who read and view and take in. Not everyone in a fandom creates and that's OK. You can just enjoy the fandom.

Ideally, the two feed off of each other. The creatives make their things; the readers/appreciators/enjoyers respond to let the creatives know that their work is being read/appreciated/admired.

But if the readers/appreciators/admirers go silent? If all they do is consume, without commenting or responding or even so much as hitting that "like" button? Well, the creatives are going to stop creating.

If you treat your creatives like nothing more than content creators, without letting them know that you love the things they make, they will disappear. They'll stop creating. Because as good as it feels to write that fic or draw that art or whatever, we don't exist in a vacuum. Fandom is at its heart a community. And if you stop feeding creatives, well. They starve. The creative works you claim to love will stop appearing.

ok my HOTTEST take on star wars is that if you infantilize luke/neglect to think of luke with depth & character flaws, we probably disagree on most things.

i find luke to be a Rorschach test of a character and i am begging people to look beyond either his naivete in ANH or his calmer demeanor in ROTJ and ask themselves like...what is lying beneath?

i think the crazy thing about luke is that even though he is a kind character, mark hamill so clearly plays him with rage just simmering under the surface for most of the OT and people are just like "la di da he's whiny!!1!" into "he's the most badass alpha male jedi who ever lived" no nuance no questions no nothing. bro did u miss the insane trauma? did u miss the insane parental issues? the complexity of forgiveness?

and i find this characterization always just leaves luke with zero agency or thought behind his actions when. clearly bro is thinking Constantly, All The Time about the crazy shit the narrative is putting him through. or trying desperately not to think about it. either way give him the fucking respect he deserves! and therapy! holy shit!

In 2014 I spent a lot of time defending purity-culture fandom behavior on Tumblr. "They're young," I said, "and they have the sort of platform we" (millennials) "didn't. We would have posted the same black-and-white things at 15. No need to call them out and embarrass them; as they get more exposed to the world, they'll see the grayscale. It'll sort itself out."

Whoo, was I wrong. I massively misread the dangers in the self-selective ideological isolation of social media. I also did not foresee the effect of transitioning from webboards and Livejournal (where you were expected to define, develop, and defend your media interpretations in nested essay conversations) into streetcorner shouting platforms where conversation is impossible, let alone position refinement.

Ten years later, and not only did the 2014 15-year-olds not grow, 2024 teens are trapped in/have embraced a spiral of extremism that 2014 fandom sowed. Because no one has to look at, and certainly not discuss, anyone else's perspective, fandom discourse has become a rotted, stagnating field of strawmen. Media literacy is dead and this is how you wind up with people posting -- in total sincerity -- that liking a fictional romance between a short adult and a tall adult is endorsing pedophilia.

What a fucking mess.
