On creating a wiki for your worldbuilding

Do you have a lot of lore to keep track of? Whether you're an author, a Game Master, or simply someone who really really likes worldbuilding, this post is for you.

Here's a quick overview of what I'll be talking about:

Platforms people use to create personal wikis

Formats and organization systems you may find useful when creating your own wiki

A brief look at the actual content you might put in your wiki (I'm planning a more in-depth post on that later with more images and demos)

And because this is gonna be a long'un, I'm putting a read-more here! I'll also make downloadable epub and PDF versions of this post available for free on my Ko-Fi at some point in the future.

(I'm also planning to reblog with a list of links later on, but I want this initial post shows up in search)

Also now that you're here, I'm going to say this isn't, like, super comprehensive or anything. I'm just talking about stuff I know a little about or have experience with. Please feel free to reblog with additions and/or corrections as needed!

What is a wiki?

According to Wikipedia, "a wiki is a hypertext publication collaboratively edited and managed by its own audience, using a web browser."

In this case, you'll likely be the sole person making updates to your wiki. The web browser part is optional these days as well, as you'll soon see.

Platforms for creating wikis

Websites for creating worldbuilding wikis

WorldAnvil

This one is actually designed for people who want to create big worldbuilding wikis.

Pros: Worldbuilding prompts! Those are great. It's got a pretty comprehensive set of article types too.

Cons: Kind of expensive to upgrade for features like making your wiki private, and it does NOT work well with adblock turned on, so if you don't want to pay for a membership you'll get inundated with ads. I'm not a huge fan of the interface in general and a lot of it isn't intuitive, but I like what they're doing so I support them anyway.

Tiddlywiki/Tiddlyhost.com.

In addition to having a cat as its icon and also a silly name, each 'article' you create with this is called a 'tiddler' which makes me think of Chuck Tingle. I haven't used it much myself yet, but I did make an account and it seems pretty neat.

Miraheze

A community-hosted wiki platform that runs on MediaWiki (which is what Wikipedia runs off of).

Pros: It's not Fandom.com.

Cons: You have to request a wiki and can't just make it yourself, as far as I can tell. I haven't actually looked into this one as much.

Neocities

An option for if you want to go super oldschool and create a website using only basic html and hyperlinks (without the handy shortcuts of bbcode or Markdown). Monthly cost is $5 usd if you want to have more space and your own domain.

Pros: 100% control over your content.

Cons: Doesn't support PHP databases for wiki software, and can be fairly labour-intensive to update if you break a link or something.

Fandom.com

Unfortunately, this one is the top result you'll get when you look up how to make your own wiki. I'm only including it here to tell you to stay as far away from it as possible!!

Its staff are known to ban wiki creators from their own wikis and a bunch of other nonsense that I'm not getting into here.

Programs and apps/web apps for creating worldbuilding wikis

Obsidian.md

My personal favourite. I'm planning to make a whole post about how I use it in the near future as part of this article series.

It's a markdown-based application that you can get on just about any platform (Windows, MacOS, Linux, iOS, Android, etc) which is great. Obsidian is really easy to pick up and use and also has great themes and community plugins!

Best thing is, it's FREE and you only have to pay if you use their publishing service, which... I don't, so.

Notion

I've heard this one is pretty good too. Idk if it costs anything. It's another "second brain" style app (might be markdown also?) and I think it might do more than Obsidian, but I haven't checked it out much myself.

Microsoft Word/Google Docs etc.

...Or just about any word processor that lets you create internal hyperlinks. Word may work best due to the collapsible headings so it doesn't get too unwieldy, but *shrug* whatever floats your boat.

Excel/Google Sheets etc.

Or, again, any spreadsheet creator that lets you create internal hyperlinks.

I'd recommend having some basic spreadsheet knowledge before doing this. It could get complicated. Before I started using Obsidian, I was using Sheets to keep track of my glossary, notes about characters, and plot ideas.

Types of formatting & organization systems

There are as many organization systems as there are people who want to organize their stuff. Everybody needs something a little different! I find the ones that work best for me are systems that have a lot of customization options.

Here are a couple I know of.

Johnny Decimal

This system is absurdly simple in its concept and yet so versatile. From their website (it's just johnnydecimal dot com but I'll link it in a reblog later):

Take everything you need to organise and sort it in to, at most, ten large buckets.

Make sure the buckets are unambiguously different.

Put a label on each bucket.

Their website has a better explanation than I can give in this post, but I'll sum up the appeal of this system as quoted from their site: "There's only one place anything can ever be."

Usefully, part of this method is creating a directory for the rest of the system.

So if you're like me and tend to shove things wherever only to lose track of it later, this is a great system—especially when used in conjunction with the Zettelkasten Method (see below).

Zettelkasten Method

Originally devised as an extensive paper-based knowledge management system, Zettelkasten is meant to easily add new entries to a knowledge base while giving each one a unique ID for easy 'linking.'

The creator of this method said 'it is not important where you place the note, as long as you can link to it.'

As with the Johnny Decimal system, I can't explain it super succinctly (nor can the website, if I'm being honest), so I'll include a link in a future reblog for a video that gave me an excellent run-down of the basics.

Setting up your own system

An organization system is only useful if you can actually, y'know, use it.

It can be fun to set up a super-detailed organization system with predetermined categories for everything, but is it easy for you to use? How will you navigate it?

Making decisions

There will be a lot of decisions to make as you set up your system. The only set-in-stone rule I follow is... don't set anything in stone. It's okay if you decide something that doesn't work later on.

Figuring out your categories

My advice: go fairly broad. You can always sub-categorize. I'm going to go over my own wikis for Athenaeum and Rocket Boosters in detail in a later post, but here are the starting top-level categories I'd recommend for worldbuilders:

A meta category for notes about your database, templates, and any relevant research you've done.

Characters, including main characters, minor characters, and important figures

Worldbuilding

In the last category, which is the main reason for the existence of my wiki, I might have:

Culture

History

Locations

Organizations

Lore (if relevant)

Technology

Transportation

I'll go over the nuances of these 'main' subcategories in that future post I mentioned. In other words, the stuff that actually goes in those categories!

Determining the importance and relevance of worldbuilding elements

You'll need to figure out whether a topic is complex enough to deserve its own entry, or if it should be a sub-heading under another entry. It's okay if you decide on both! I have short subheadings under some entries that amount to "see [link to main entry on that topic]."

I've also decided to expand subheadings into their own topics, and I've removed topics as their own entry and shoved them under subheadings. I do this a lot, in fact! So it's okay if you don't know.

Templates

Will you be creating several of one type of entry?

Individual character profiles

Towns and cities

Factions

(to name a few)

It might be handy to figure out the basic types of information you'll need about each of those things and create a template for them.

A character template might have spaces for the basics, such as name, role, age, and so on.

Some characters will have a lot more information, and some might have even less than what your template dictates! And that's fine.

A word of warning about using system-creation as procrastination

Creating a wiki can be a daunting task. You might decide it's not for you, and that's okay. But you might also decide to go headlong into the process and work on every minute detail, and that is also okay, but.

But.

Beware of using your wiki as an excuse to procrastinate your actual writing/session preparation. Yes, use it to keep track of all the lore you've injected into your manuscript/campaign/whatever, just make sure it stays in its place as a companion to your main project rather than becoming your main project.

How formal should your entries be?

Honestly this one's entirely up to you. I have a mix. Some entries are written like Wikipedia entries with a thorough explanation of the topic with proper punctuation and formatting, while others are simply bullet-point lists of thoughts and ideas that I can return to at a later date.

would you ever make another goodreads? I was literally devastated to find yours had been deleted, I would spend hours scrolling through your book reviews 😭 they were so beautiful and insightful

Thank you for your kind words. As mentioned in my responses to previous asks, some of my reviews had been backed up on Wordpress and Storygraph, so you can still look there... I did think very seriously about just making a new GR account and reposting everything, but the concept of having to rebuild over ten years’ worth of work is just exhausting. I’m grateful for all the good parts obviously, but overall, yikes.

Ultimately, I’m done with GR unless some pretty significant changes are made to the structure of the website. For example:

There needs to be a way to appeal if a review gets flagged. One time a review of mine got deleted for allegedly plagiarising Wikipedia... but I had written the Wikipedia page, and after writing the review.

There needs to be a way to thread comments. This is a very basic function of any decent forum or really any halfway decent website, and it’s honestly embarrassing that GR still doesn’t have this capability. RSS is not that difficult; you guys are just lazy.

There needs to be more support and allowance for people who aren’t just writing an eighth-grade book report. This sounds mean, and is intended as such, but one of the rules GR has is that your review can’t be about the author’s character, actions, or behaviour. Well, those things inform one’s opinion of a book, so this rule is dumb as hell. Furthermore, I like writing about interesting things, not just a basic summary of plot and theme; all the time I would get comments saying I was writing “bad” or “useless” reviews because I didn’t use the structure of a book report. GR stifles creativity and freedom of expression, constantly and internationally. The types of reviews that are officially sanctioned are unhelpful for me personally.

There needs to be support in different languages. This is a website owned by Amazon; they have the money to pay for translation services. There’s no good excuse for not having at least the basic framework of the site available in languages other than English.

There needs to be a way to rate a book zero stars. Some books just suck.

I’m not even thinking of stuff like the constant and intrusive advertisements on the browser site, because I have adblockers so I don’t see any of that shit, but let the record show that the types of adverts being shown demonstrate that most people on GR have terrible taste. Not my friends though, they’re all geniuses and very smart.

social media is pushing their luck lately on all fronts. even when you understand their mindset these changes are risky - mainly operating under "social media is like a slot machine" kind of mindset, since thats effectively the same thing.

my point is: the best thing they can do is make it as easy as possible to use the website and develop addictions, any friction hurts this and this is why selling data is their strongest practice, *its invisible to the user*. ads, like promoted posts and such, are less intrusive. theyre just another post. ads, like how youtube does it, are very intrusive and frictional. ads still need to exist for data collection to be worth anything to the corporations, but from a social media companies perspective data collection weighs more on the scale.

but recently, theres been a few interesting developments. its not like ive been to shareholder meetings and can predict exactly what the baby eating ceos are thinking, but - i think they believe the addiction the average person has is so powerful over them that they can get away with putting more friction (or theyre just fucking stupid). the examples im talking about right now are twitters "$1 subscription" and youtube waging war on adblockers. twitters seems like just a fucking stupid descision but youtubes seems more calculated, but its still some big friction.

seriously the twitter thing is unbelieveably stupid friction if youve ever been like... on the internet without access to a credit card you know the difference between free and not free VERY well. the subscription idea will probably get dropped but if it somehow does go through like. every kid will not use it for certian, anyone who... yknow... evaluates the worth of the thing theyre buying even SLIGHTLY will quit, like... the only people that will remain are the blue checks who are not beating the nonsentient allegations. anyway.

i dont know how "normal people" use social media. i surround myself with people who are quite aware about the mass gangstalking of users and are generally above average in tech-proficiency. i dont know the social media habits of jimmy age 25. maybe jimmy will just deal with the friction, but the people i know are fairly averse to the friction and are just... using the sites less because of it. there doesnt really seem to be a stopping point in adding this friction until the site owners get burned somehow (unless youre twitter lol theyre gonna keep doing shit until the servers cant afford to be paid they have NO brakes). i guess we just have to see how much it takes for the lowest common denominator to get too annoyed with social media before sites stop their nonsense

uh, anyway, im gonna take a break from youtube until theres a way to use an adblock on it. a week? a month? never? well, thats fine. i quit reddit basically for good after the API change i can drop a site again if i need to

Hey I appreciate ur suggestion for the other places for resources in the future! ...Aside from the Nonbinary Wiki, I've used them in the past but some of their articles feel super backhanded with phrases like this one in the otherkin article "a subculture of real people who identify as not entirely human. Each individual comes up with their own reasoning for how and why they are otherkin, and what kind of being they are." so i don't really like using them, but that's just my preference. I try to rotate out sources as much as i can (but i have only really been coining for a couple months) as a lot of terminology has been given slightly different verbiage in their descriptions so i think its useful to change it out to try and get the full picture. thank you again!

I genuinely have no clue what about that example is backhanded, but I completely understand the desire to represent certain verbiage! We all have our preferences for how things are communicated.

In that case, I actually have a different suggestion! You can use a tool called breezewiki to view fandom wiki articles without needing an adblocker to get a decent user experience.

And if you don’t mind, could you elaborate on that backhandedness? Like I said, I don’t see it myself and I am genuinely curious what you mean so that we can improve phrasing on that wiki.

We Need to Talk About “First Amendment Auditing” At LIBRARIES!

Libraries go through enough shit don’t they? A close friend of mine works at a local library of ours and some “it’s my first amendment right harass you“ assholes came into the library with high-grade cameras, three of them, and started filming people and the library staff. No surprise that one woman got upset while one of the other library employees told this group not to film. When the woman tried to push them away, they continued to gripe about being assaulted and proceeded to verbally harass and insult the woman and the rest of the staff. The staff were as professional as they possibly could be. See for yourself below (I'd prefer you had adblocker so they don't get revenue). These people believe they're "educating" people about their rights.

It's so invasive, disheartening, and very American. Please report this video for harassment and bullying on YouTube, then go to the American Library Association‘s website and report an account of “auditing“. This has happened to several libraries across the U.S.

Our libraries are going through enough shit. Companies like Amazon that sell e-books, audiobooks, and the most convenient way to get hardcover and paperback books are trying to make libraries obsolete. Libraries have programs that help our communities; there are classes, group meetings, a safe place for teens and children, getting a chance to learn about other events in their community, and helping with vocational needs. The last thing they need is for their own "patrons" to turn against them for stupid and misinformed legality claims. The ALA has already addressed this issue, but they need more information about other instances of "audits" so they can revise the legal policies about filming in this manner. The more reports, the better protected library programs will be from disturbances like these.

A comment I found (by user ChaosKei) discussed the misinformation regarding Colorado Library Law that the guy in the video tried to use to manipulate the assistant director of the library and a US Supreme Court case, Kreimer v. Morristown, NJ, that addressed how the use of "violation of one’s first amendment rights" doesn’t justify inappropriate behavior at the library. Libraries are considered a limited public forum, meaning that those who go to the library must attend for the reasons why a library was built. Like, you know, to fucking read, study, work, learn. Not film strangers... The Kreimer case in 1992 involved a homeless man who wanted to sleep in the library because it was public property, but libraries are not shelters. Libraries are not film studios nor are they a place for heated arguments.

Here's an excerpt from the Kreimer Case (took this quote from the YT comment):

"A library is "a place dedicated to quiet, to knowledge, and to beauty." Brown v. Louisiana, 383 U.S. 131, 142, 86 S. Ct. 719, 724, 15 L. Ed. 2d 637 (1966). Its very purpose is to aid in the acquisition of knowledge through reading, writing and quiet contemplation. Thus, THE EXERCISE OF OTHER ORAL AND INTERACTIVE FIRST AMENDMENT ACTIVITIES IS ANTITHETICAL TO THE NATURE OF THE LIBRARY. These arguably conflicting characteristics, at least in a First Amendment sense, support our conclusion that the Library constitutes a limited public forum, a sub-category of designated public fora. (21) See Brody v. Spang, at 1118. We thus adopt the reasoning of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in Travis v. Owego-Apalachin School District, 927 F.2d 688 (2d Cir. 1991), where the court held that a limited public forum "is created when government opens a nonpublic forum but limits the expressive activity to certain kinds of speakers or to the discussion of certain subjects.... In the case of a limited public forum, constitutional protection is afforded only to expressive activity of a genre similar to those that government has admitted to the limited forum." Id. at 692 (emphasis supplied). (22) Hence, as a limited public forum, the Library is obligated only to permit the public to exercise rights that are consistent with the nature of the Library and consistent with the government's intent in designating the Library as a public forum. (23) OTHER ACTIVITIES NEED NOT BE TOLERATED."

I'm sick of capitalistic ventures ignoring the value of our libraries and other local resources. From larger companies to whatever kind of YouTubers these dickheads are. PLEASE at least report this particular incident. I genuinely hope this doesn't happen at your local or school library.

i'm not like an expert in advertising and I dont work in marketing anymore, so I can't give you all the nasty little tricks they're using right now. i can go through and point out the ways ads are probably wheedling their way into an admittedly quite well developed shield against them,* but i think it would ultimately be a kind of misdirection. you're doing everything you can--except i don't see adblock mentioned. switch to firefox and get ublock origin.

the point is more that you'll just never be fully immune and you'll never block out every ounce of advertising or its impact on you. no adblock will ever be perfect enough to get everything, and there's no escape Outside either--your mailbox filled with flyers and coupons and postcards and pamplets, every inch of every major street plastered in signs and billboards, the assault on the senses of commercial districts with the eerie and homogenous wasteland of suburbia its primary alternative. the og post is more like reminding everyone that ads are a very very normalized cognitohazard and they’re everywhere. i would encourage you to think of advertising as the evil mad scientist version of psychology with no ethics and one mission: encourage you to Buy Product. like if psychologists with access to simply incomprehensible amounts of data were trying to brainwash you into really fucking wanting a chia pet. in an endless sea of suggestions, you will eventually take one. new makeup or dnd dice or jewelry or a shirt or anything. eventually, you will be open to suggestion for whatever reason and an ad will hit.

1. so the first thing I want to point out is that autistic people are (IN GENERAL) more resistant to social conditioning than other groups. it's why you see things like higher rates of gender nonconformity among autistic people. your write-up about looking for new products is honestly an excellent example of some of the reasons autistic people are more resistant to social conditioning-- like sensory restrictions. THIS DOES NOT MAKE YOU IMMUNE. but it explains why you're naturally limiting your exposure to ads

the wheedles

first step is the advertising that worked on your parents. you were born into a home with preexisting habitual products, they were the ones you got used to and comfortable with, and many of the brands you use now are probably just the ones your mom bought all through your childhood. this happened before you were born and turned you into the ideal customer--loyal and consistent, unwilling to deviate and unlikely to try a competitor. that type of customer is less vulnerable to advertising for products they're already loyal to, but they can be convinced of the need for new supplementary products.

second step is the advertising that's working on your family and friends that generate the recommendations. odds are they tried that product instead of others because of THEIR exposure to ads. if your data security isn't tight, they'll get targeted advertisements based on YOUR activity to suggest to you. even if you aren't seeing the ads designed for you, data scrapers are collecting every ounce they can about you to add to a digital advertising profile and will push it to everyone in your circle to increase the social pressure on you or convince the loved one to get it for you as a gift. the digital advertising profile works by getting a single piece of reusable information--email or phone number-- and then using cookies, social media activity, and search history to assemble preferences that are permanently tied to that email or phone number. it's nearly impossible to find all of your data scraping profiles among the literal hundreds of data brokerage firms and equally as hard to get a single one of them to delete the data they've collected on you.

special interest ads, targeted or otherwise. i'm just gonna assume you've got a special interest. targeted advertising was revolutionary for these fucks because we know everyone is more vulnerable to ads for products or product types where there was a preexisting interest. on the street among the billboards or while you scroll through social medias, familiar brands and desired products will catch your eye over others, remind you of their existence and that you don't have it yet, and wear down your self control one exposure at a time. this is more damaging if your special interest is currently lucrative or popular--legos or minecraft or makeup.

Content like satisfying/ reorganization/ lifestyle videos. so like. no idea if this specifically applies to you, just a hypothetical for use as an example. let's say you have a tiktok account and a penchant for those organizing videos that are basically some rich lady restocking her whole ass house like it's a fuckin walgreens (i do not have a penchant for these, i actually hate them. sorry i picked a pet peeve for the example). now, if you watch enough of those videos, you start to think about all the things in your house or kitchen or pantry or shelf or drawer that could fit in various sizes of storage container and what kinds of storage containers or baskets you'd like and you start to forget that NONE of that shit required boxes or baskets before because now you kind of just Want them to Be In Another Layer Of Container. because it's satisfying and you know it's satisfying because you watch "satisfying" videos of rich ladies restocking their households all day and are satisfied. and now you're purchasing a Bunch More Products you didn't even know about and just did not need 2 months ago. that type of thing is what I mean by cognitohazard. it's kind of a hard question to ask, but what types of Content are you consuming where the primary difference between it and you is the presence of a Product? and how many times will you watch videos of Product before realizing you can Own Product and "skip the middleman." videos of squelchy putty or kinetic sand or legos being put together or a playthrough of a video game. all of them make you more likely to buy that stuff the next time you see it

oh, yeah? you can’t post hardcore stuff on here anymore and heaven help you if you’re a sex worker who got fucked over by the nsfw ban. bots are everywhere. you post art and you’ll get 3 notes if you’re lucky—if you get upwards of a thousand, 900 of them will be likes guaranteed. you post fanfic on here and it’ll be buried in that monster tag. everything is either memes or nonsense. this place fucking SUCKS now if you’re an artist, like i’m surprised i’m seeing people tell those who jumped ship from reddit that reblogs are lifeblood here because artists are lucky to be reblogged even a couple of times on here anymore. this place is dead if you’re any kind of creative person.

the hell it does. did you know that if you live in california, they actually give you the option “do not sell my information” on here? that’s right, they make it optional. oh, and the ads on here are an eyesore. i thought they were kind of funny at first but they make scrolling impossible and they’re the most ridiculous things i’ve ever seen (and apparently adblock is starting to give some leeway on this)

it’s actually really easy to figure out, almost too easy. now, if you follow someone new, you get the accounts they follow in your feed (which i think is weird, but i actually get the logic because they might follow something you’ll like), but if you hide it or straight up ignore it, you won’t see it again. there’s no hashtags on there, either (at least not at the moment), which… i kind of like? hashtags are so abused at this point—looking at you, tumblr—that it’s rather relieving to not see that. so, if you see something you like, you “repost” it (which is like retweeting or reblogging). you guys hate something that uses a mechanism that was once tumblr’s lifeblood and has taken a back seat to the goddamn like button. i… have no words.

okay, two things. number one: when you sign up for it, you are immediately given the option for a public account or a private account. of course, that doesn’t really do much to keep you away from zuckerberg’s reddened eyes (as those of us who have been around facebook will tell you), but all of us who signed up on wednesday were well aware of what we’re getting into with it. we were all like “this is good*” * meaning “for now that is”. it’s so fucking obvious that you don’t need to state it and put words in our mouths (how did we exactly come to this conclusion, anyway? that “not available to europe = privacy out the window”? i’m not in the eu, so help me out here) number two: and i cannot emphasize this more, USE YOUR HEAD. i looked into it immediately after i saw the announcement a couple of months ago and came to the conclusion that i probably needed it. it’s meant to accompany instagram, too—hence why you need an ig to get it and why you need to delete your instagram to rid of it; which tells me the bad reaction to this on here has been a major case of knee-jerk reactions without reading into it first. i’ve been in need of a place like that, a place that’s sort of twitter-ish but is a more user-friendly (and it is! it took me three days to gain 20 followers on threads; twitter, it took me a month; tumblr, it took me two months). if i was a sex worker, i wouldn’t touch the place with a ten-foot pole (and i sure as fuck wouldn’t link my personal facebook to my business instagram, like… i stopped doing that in 2012 with facebook and twitter because i thought it looked bad. really, who does that, especially if you’re a sex worker?) people on here are utterly abysmal when it comes to critical thinking and the fact so many on here are bitching about this tells me no one thought it out and instead ironically took the cowards’ way out. and this is a corollary of that but… if you got nothing to hide, stop worrying about this. really. some of you going all lecture-y about this probably don’t remember the patriot act after 9/11, how we had our privacy invaded with wire-tapping and checking the mail. hell, roe v. wade, at its core, was about a right to privacy. we all have a right to privacy, but violations of it have been going on for decades and truly getting it back has been such a tall order that it’s nearly impossible. plus, all of you saying that it’s an invasion of privacy will always make me laugh because you guys are the same generation letting technology rule your lives and letting a harebrained app like tiktok completely destroy your brain, heart, and attention span, like it’s so ironic.

and just like with american elections, it really comes down to the lesser of two evils. i don’t like zuck or elon, but i’ll take the former because at least i know what i’m getting myself into there; elon has just destroyed everything in his wake to the point of no return (so weird to think that in 2018, i thought he was going to save us all, too). but i promise if you’re in north america, and if you have your location turned off on the instagram app in settings, you’ll be fine.

I was quite fond of them all. My Adgroup- ah, sort of an Addison polycule, to simplify it- were some of the most important people in the worlds to me. I assume that's who you mean, right? I wasn't particularly close with any of the others. That's not to say I hated them, more that I didn't care either way.

My Adgroup consisted of Vivi, a blue, Net, an orange, Survey/Banner (genderfluid), a yellow, Spam, and myself.

Vivi was quite kindhearted. Their identifier comes from 'Viviki', a common shorthand for Virovirokun. While most Addisons see Viviki and Poppups as below them, Vivs was quite kind to them, and would take them in and patch them up if they ever needed healing. Thus, it didn't really surprise anyone that she eventually got married to an Ambyu-lance! Those two even had a child together...

Net was our orange. He was... not skilled at acknowledging his emotions. He sold supplements and exercise equipment to the Lightners, and was quite taken by their ideas of masculinity. But whenever he put down that front, he was truly kind-hearted. I wish he'd been given the time to grow out of his reliance on their ideals.

Survey was... tired, haha! Their identifier actually came from Server. He was a bit distant from the rest of us due to the hours it kept, but he still cared quite deeply for us. He worked as a programmer, you see, helping other Darkners make sense of the world around them. It was quite a valuable job, and an honour to have. Otherwise, it sold adblocker. This cultivated quite a distant image, as you can imagine, so most other Addisons didn't really know much about it.

And Spam... well, you already know him.

J*hnny D*pp is untouchable garbage, ik, but there's one older movie of his I think about a lot called Benny & Joon, where he does this Buster Keaton sort of routine and after Joon sees it, she asks, 'Did you go to school for that?' and his character responds, 'No. I was kicked out of school for that.'

This scene and the underlying, probably unintentional, meaning of it sticks with me. For context, I'm not that talented at anything no matter how many hours I dedicate to it, but I've received compliments and more than a couple wistful 'I wish I could find time to do that's from people who've seen me crochet or draw or pole dance or what-have-you. There seems to be this misunderstanding that these things are doable for me because I have a plethora of time and resources or energy others just...don't.

This could not be further from the truth.

I make time to do these things. How? By sacrificing quality and time dedicated to the things society tells me should be the ultimate priority. Example? My crochet work drastically improved after years of false starts and finally finding the right teacher (Youtube) by...taking it to certain lectures with me in college. I would sit there and work on it even if it was large and took up my whole lap rather than taking notes. I still participated in class discussion. I still took my tests and did my essays (when ADHD and perfectionism didn't prevent me from turning in boring crap nobody gave a damn about). Classmates would look at me like I was insane, but not a single professor bothered me about it because my grades and class participation were solid.

Same thing with work. My current job is...well, I need money like many of you and 'beggars can't be choosers' yadda yadda. The point is, I have a lot of downtime in between duties and assignments, most of which only have to be done on a monthly basis. So I write. Fuck, I've written nearly three books worth of words since starting here nearly two years ago. One of which I did in a month (i was going for sterilization surgery consultation and wrote up 100 reasons and elaborations why i needed this surgery, just in case). And I draw. If anyone sees me at it (my back faces the door and there's high foot traffic by our office -_-), they don't say boo to me because I get my work done (and some of theirs too, lbr) and growing up with strict parents made swapping tabs and hiding chat rooms child's play. Thank Hephaestus for Firefox and adblockers.

I'm also not close with the majority of my blood family in the emotional or geographical sense. No real obligations there. Friends? The majority of them are...well, here. I regularly talk to and interact with 2 whole people in 2 different states. Even the effort of trying to meet more isn't a priority to me even though I make shallow attempts a couple of times a year. I'm not close to any coworkers either because I never feel I can trust them due to problems with gossipy coworkers in the past and, ofc, the current climate of people playing shoot-em-up when work pushes them past their breaking point.

Make no mistake, I am taking a risk doing these things. I risk write-ups and firing and dying alone and all kinds of shit...because I'd rather be doing art. Something I am never going to be able to live off of so I have to steal time from other things to be able to do it. When I go home, I barely have the energy to cook, clean, run errands, and do some meatsuit maintenance before I have to come back the next day. There have been so many times I've fallen asleep before I could get even partway through what I planned for the night, right at my computer or next to my sketch book.

I have to snatch back the time taken from me, there is no other recourse. Lunch breaks are not enough when we even get them (in OH, employers are not legally obligated to provide those. found that shit out at a factory i used to work at where i also wrote fanfic in a notebook between machine unloading). There are zero guarantees of a better afterlife or reward for continued suffering in this life and maybe it's the neurodivergency talking, but I refuse to waste more of it than I already have pretending the things I am forced to do are inherently better or more fulfilling than the shit I want to do.

TL;DR All this is really just to say: get sneakier. STEAL time back where you can. Else you're just going to keep wishing for more time you're never going to get.

i open youtube on my phone and watch a video. it begins with two ads and i can only skip the second one, and every 5-10 minutes theres another one or two ads. at some point in the video the youtuber spends a few minutes advertising their sponsor because thats the best way for them to get paid for their work. i do not have the money to afford the ad free version of youtube.

i decide to watch youtube on my laptop with an adblocker instead and i use my phone to open an art app instead. i have to watch an ad to access the brushes that i like to use. any time i exit and reopen the app, an ad pops up on my screen. there is an ad banner on the top of my screen nonstop. when i try to switch between artworks, another ad pops up, and when i press the X to close it, i am taken to the app store to buy what the ad was for. i refresh the art app because thats the only way i can get rid of the ad. i do not have the money to afford the ad free version of this app.

i finish drawing and open tumblr mobile. by far the least aggressive in advertising but holy shit, some of these are unsettling. sometimes i mistake the ads for real posts at first. i still prefer the mobile app, but i need to edit my blog, so i go on desktop and see a popup calling tumblr a hellsite and asking me to turn off adblocker and pay to remove ads instead. i do not have the money to afford the ad free version of tumblr.

this continues with nearly every digital service i use. i cant afford to pay to use it, so i either use an adblocker or just put up with companies trying to pretend theyre my friends, or disregarding peoples safety by making ads that flash or are untentionally unnerving, or putting in the absolute minimum amount of effort by using a text to speech program instead of hiring a voice actor and yet they still think i trust them to put any amount of effort into their product when i have no reason not to suspect theyd cut corners for profit in production just the same as in advertising. companies are constantly competing for real estate in my brain, and yours, and yours, and yours, and the alternative is that we all just shell out to use services that are so ingrained in our lives that it becomes incredibly difficult to imagine not having access to them - because these services are often designed to be addictive and draw us in and take up as much of our time as possible and keep us scrolling and scrolling and scrolling and generating more and more revenue. from ads.

and then i say all this to my therapist and he says "yeah youre right this is all kind of a nightmare and i dont know what to do about it either and it scares me" and then we do shots together or something. you get the picture

This morning I read two short stories and made a Tumblr account.

Did the short stories influence my decision to make a Tumblr? Absolutely. Let me talk about them.

So, I've been on this binge with reading and writing. I'm at the point where I'll read anything. Nothing is sacred — if it has words on it, I will read it (with the only exception being... tweets? and sometimes YouTube comments because I am not perfect and love niche subculture drama).

I've been bouncing between reading fanfiction (easy, filterable, usually soothing in the way watching something like Vampire Diaries or Grey's Anatomy while you cook dinner is) and actual published works (can be really rewarding, great to steal from, paper smells good) but as for what kinds of published works I'm reading has shifted this past week.

Okay, yeah. I got a subscription to NYT to read food writing. I finally know why there's a big text blurb on every online recipe page now: these people are trying to be food writers. I'm still not going to read it because I only care about the recipe most of the time, but that's not the case with Eric Kim.

I found out about his writing via a food-themed fanfiction I was reading — did I mention I love it when people put that much soul into their fanworks? anyway — and he is the kind of writer who just has a very consistent, inviting tone. Absolutely perfect for food writing, great to learn from in general. You can pick any piece of his and see precisely what I mean within the first few sentences.

I needed to have all of that preamble because I think it's crucial for me to recognize at this point in writing, I'm still very new. I've taken English classes before, sure. I took advanced English classes in high school and college, sure, but they were always a means to an end: I only really cared enough to get good grades so I could escape my dysfunctional family.

Reading and writing because I want to is cathartic; it's forgiving, in a way. More than anything, it's a gift. As a kid I read to escape — now I read to expand. I want to read everything.

Did I say we were going to talk about short stories before? We're here now. Finally.

Last night I binged queenlua's blog posts after some rabbit hole I fell into on AO3. They have a post on some short stories they found worth reading, and I decided to read two of them this morning, specifically "Ponies" by Kij Johnson and "Paper Menagerie" by Ken Liu (fair warning: this is impossible to get through without an adblocker).

The imagery in "Ponies" was spectacular. Johnson balances having Lisa Frank visuals in the mixture of unsettling details while avoiding coming off like something out of Happy Tree Friends. Did it shake me to my core? Do I feel like a new person after reading it? Not particularly. But I didn't dislike it.

I couldn't help but think of this My Little Pony PC game I used to play as a kid that I could never figure out. You had a pony you customized and raised, and you needed to make it like you enough to listen to you so you could train it to jump over fences and take it with you in town to meet all the other ponies. I never got that far because I was obsessed with giving my pony everything you weren't supposed to: pizza, lollipops, cupcakes... My pony constantly had a tummy ache, perhaps understandably. My pony never learned how to jump over the fences. We never got to go into the cute little town together, and I never progressed past the beginning of the game, but boy did we eat a lot of Pony Pizza.

There's probably some life lesson or metaphor there, right? Right?

Anyway, the overall message of "Ponies" was so incredibly on-the-nose that I'm left wondering if I was missing something — is it a parody, satire, or is it meant to be taken at face value? It was intriguing in the way that I'm immersed while reading but completely forget most of it after I close the tab. It was a short read, and I think I got something out of it, even if it was just remembering all the ponies I used to mercilessly feed pizza.

"Paper Menagerie" did strike me in a way that "Ponies" did not. I cried. I cried even though I knew what was going to happen. Maybe it's just the mixed kid in me, but I thought about my father and his relationship with his mother. He never liked to talk about it, but I imagine it looked a lot like "Paper Menagerie." Even without that personal note, I think this story has some really powerful passages. I would quote my favorites here, but I don't want to spoil anything.

I want to read more short stories. I want to read more poetry. I am currently reading more plays! There is so much I feel like I'm catching up on since I got into this craft "late" — I'm trying not to stress about it and do what I can.
