It's about to be higher, but currently 236,415 (89k of that is co-written with @machawicket, though, so I can't claim it all!)

3. what fandoms do you write for?

Arrow, Stargate SG-1, Bones, Timeless, Pitch, and a few others that are sort of incidental to the main ones.

4. what are your top five fics by kudos?

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I was going to say Forfeit (SG-1), but honestly I think it's a toss up between that and time's right but the clock's wrong (Arrow).

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

This one's tough, because my angst to happy ratio can be pretty hight in my fics, but in terms of, like, purest fluff, probably How the Day Sounds (Arrow).

8. Do you get hate on fics?

I have, especially in the Arrow fandom because it's probably the biggest (and therefor has the most potential for toxicity), but it disappears fast.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

LOL yep! I do write explicit smut, but even that is pretty vanilla (which is not to say that's bad, and maybe one day I'll write kink, but I haven't yet).

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

I imagine a lot of crossovers, but I rarely write them. The only one I've done (to my recollection) that didn't involve characters from different shows but still in roughly the same universe was The Male Prostitute in the Club With His (Word Redacted Due to Content) (Arrow), in which Oliver Queen met his doppelganger, Jason from Hung. It was ridiculous, and fittingly, my first fic in that fandom.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of. Honestly, for the most part my fic is too short for most people to bother with, I think.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated? 

I wish!

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Absolutely! There's obviously Our Version of Events with @machawicket, and I wrote a few SG-1 fic with @danveresque back in the day. I really enjoy co-writing, although I'm almost always the one slowing us down.

14. What’s your all time favorite ship?

Sam/Jack from Stargate SG-1. It was my first love and the only one I come back to over and over.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I am reserving my 5th amendment right not to incriminate myself.

16. What are your writing strengths?

I like to think I'm pretty good at characterization and nailing a character's voice. I also enjoy writing dialogue, although I don't know that that makes me good at it. I'm also pretty good at hitting the emotions I want to hit in a scene and also writing emotional complexity.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Writing consistently and to completion is a big weakness -- a result of poor executive function skills and high perfectionism, ha. I'm also great at coming up with big sweeping plots and terrible at executing the details of them. And, until recently, I clung a little too much to thinking fic needs to be realistic and grounded -- now I understand that fic can be as ridiculous as I want, because what matters is how much fun I have writing it and whether it gives me the serotonin I'm seeking (as @mrv3000 put it).

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I'm incredibly impressed by folks who might be polyglots who can do this. I, sadly, cannot.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

I honestly don't remember! I have a notoriously bad memory of my childhood and I got into fandom very early. But the first fandom I published a fic in was Stargate SG-1.

20. Favorite fic you’ve written?

This is like asking who my favorite child is. I don't think I can answer with just one! Favorite funny fic is probably Cabin in the Woods (Arrow). Favorite fic where I just slid easily into the character's voices? Probably the devil's right there in the details (Timeless). Favorite (and only) remix? reclaim (the destiny rules remix) (Stargate SG-1). Favorite angsty fic (of which there are maaaany), probably god himself would call it justice (Arrow).

So, wanted to get some hiatus rec lists going and encourage some self promo in my friends so how about sharing your top fics no matter how big or small - give us the links to your wonderful words with the Most hits/Most kudos/Most comments/Most bookmarks/Most words/Least words.

Most hits: Across the Stars, which is my collection of Theron/Knight prompt fills from over here, collected together because I hate writing summaries and didn't want to do it for 100+ ficlets (nor completely flood the SWTOR category with my fic*). Actually a little surprised that one was at the top in flat view, because I was absolutely planning on ignoring all my SGA fics for the purposes of this (it's not that I don't care about them I just... don't care) Although granted, there are a lot of chapters in that one, so that's probably part of it.

Most kudos: If you want to be technical it's an SGA fic but once again Across the Stars is trailing like a whole 5 kudos behind. My little MVP, just chugging along.

Most comment threads: All right, now I'm starting to sound like a broken record. I will give you three guesses which one came in at the top again... by a wide margin. But #2 is By Guidance from the Stars.

Most bookmarks: That SGA fic again, by a wide enough margin that I can't really dismiss it on a technicality. Granted, I know it's a favorite among a lot of folk, and is one that from the comments is actually re-read a lot? Which is impressive staying power for something I wrote in a manic fever dream in the span of a few weeks for a fic fest.

Most words: A different SGA fic, written for one of the SGA Big Bangs eons ago. Somehow between the first and second drafts it ballooned up 18k in edits to nearly 89k words. If I ever finish poor languishing Smoke and Mirrors, maybe it will unseat the king from his throne. That or I will eventually write so many ficlets I can't be arsed to create a summary for, Across the Stars will win by attrition, slowly expanding and engulfing everything like a dying star.

Fewest words: Harmony (575 words) I am absolutely cheating here because I looked at the bottom two on the list, one of which I wrote when I was sixteen and was like "Nah, I don't want to share that", so instead, please have this lovely story from the point-of-view of lightsaber crystals. I wound up putting my drabble fic into a collection because, one again, I hate summaries.

Or the one where Theo annoys Liam every morning with his awful singing until he doesn’t anymore and Liam is even more annoyed. Liam hates every single thing about his mornings -the fact that they happen in the morning alone is enough. The thing Liam hates the most about his mornings though is the terrible voice of the guy who lives below him. He can’t sing for shit and Liam tried to politely let him understand that by throwing flour and water on his balcony, and also by shouting it to him, you can’t sing for shit!, and then by writing it into a note he proceeded to attach to his door, but this Raeken guy just keeps doing it, every single morning, like a fucking rooster. Liam did nothing to deserve this. He probably didn’t do anything to deserve better either to be fair, he doesn’t expect to open his window and be welcomed by some angelic voice singing him good morning, he’d just be happy with nothing. Silence. That’s something Liam can appreciate in mornings. Just some bark from his dog and the sound of his misery and that’s it. But no, god forbid the new guy lets him have that.

All four Todoroki siblings run away together after Rei burns Shouto. I love the characterization, and how the author draws on their own experience as a foreigner working in Japan, and how they did their research on missing child cases and child homelessness in Japan (it doesn't go hugely in depth but I appreciate the authors' notes discussing this, even if it's, well, incredibly tragic. There’s more light hearted cultural notes as well!)

make this feel like home -- https://archiveofourown.org/works/21852745 -- 27k words, complete -- we already rec'd this to you but adding it here for completion. A character-focused Todosibs fic with EXCELLENT portrayal of sibling relationships. I re-read this one A LOT.

Dragon Head, Snake Tail -- https://archiveofourown.org/works/17195510 -- 61k words, incomplete -- Another Todosib favorite that deals with canon and also an AU in which Rei got a divorce and everyone mostly grew up away from Endeavor. I love how the sibling relationships are depicted, but I also love how the author is a huge kanji nerd who fully lean's into Horikoshi's love for punny names and the long authors notes explaining how they came up with every new name in the fic. It's occasionally bittersweet but mostly a fun & humorous fic.

Twin Swap -- https://archiveofourown.org/series/1867879 -- 55k words, on hiatus with 2 complete arcs -- do you want Todosibs AND great villain characterization? (well mostly Fuyumi & Touya, but Natsuo is there for a bit too). Anyways the fic is mostly pretty lighthearted in tone, but it's also not afraid to hit hard in the characterization department, and I really love how this author wrote all of the League members. I re-read this one a lot.

No Such Thing As a Hopeless Case -- https://archiveofourown.org/works/16806328 -- 14k words, hiatus (and right on a cliffhanger too!) -- All Might accidentally kinda adopts the league of villains? Again, great LOV characterization, and I think you'll like how it explores the societal factors and personal tragedies that lead them to and keep them at the margins of society. also, some really terrible puns, which are my favorite thing

could i but teach the hundreth part -- https://archiveofourown.org/works/12558048 -- 5k words, complete -- a post-canon outsider-POV fic of Class 1-A visiting and taking care of a retried All Might. It’s just short and sweet.

Missing Everything -- https://archiveofourown.org/works/30128547 -- 52k words, in progress -- AU where Izuku doesn't learn of All Might's secret during the slime attack, but manages to befriend him through his civilian identity. Recommending this for the really interesting (to me at least) characterization of All Might and examination of his flaws and the toll of his career, and recently it's gotten into some interesting exploration of the details of the Hero System with the beach clean up.

Q.A.B. -- https://archiveofourown.org/works/27665101 -- 18k words, complete (w/ a sequel just starting out!) -- a really excellent social media fic in which Izuku stays quirkless and doesn't go to UA but does gain a following online for his quirk analysis and hero blogging. Also features great characterization of Todoroki, Kaminari, and some of the Vigilantes crew.

Yesterday Upon the Stair -- https://archiveofourown.org/works/8337607 -- 460k words, complete. You're probably aware of this fic since it's the highest hit count in the fandom, but I really think it fits your requirement and writing and character work! I know some other people who think the writing and character work are mediocre though, which I'm baffled by... but YMMV? The beginning is weaker and my absolute FAVORITE part is the Nighteye arc, which is the last 20% of the fic, but I would say it really starts to hit its stride by chapter 9~10? If you aren't enjoying it by then it's probably fair to expect it won't catch your interest later.

I can't believe no one has written any "self insert as Bakugo" fanfics... - https://archiveofourown.org/works/17662220 -- 70k words, infrequent updates -- I like this one for taking a weird as hell premise and REALLY rolling with it. It's somehow pretty similar to a lot of more positive takes on Bakugo's relationship with the Midoriyas while also being very much it's own thing. The author is NOT "far out of high school" though -- it's hilariously clear from the SI's reactions to certain quirks that the writer started this while taking lower division universtiy physics (and personally I love that). Also appreciate SI!Bakugo's war with Nedzu to get proper counseling and mental health support for class 1-a after all the shit they've been through.

It's Over, Isn't It (it's only yet begun) -- https://archiveofourown.org/series/1269638 -- 66k words, abandoned series with several complete stories -- AU where All Might dies rescuing Tenko from AfO but other than that it's a heartwarming fix-it! Same author as YUTS, very positive portrayal of Nighteye, excellent character writing for many other characters.

Subject: A Comprehensive Report -- https://archiveofourown.org/works/16037609 -- 83k words, infrequent updates -- another very popular fandom staple, but hey it's really good! A social media fic with quirkless Izuku interning with Nighteye as an analyst. Has some very interesting exploration of the legalities of Hero Society and how the status quo developed.

For Fools and Utopias -- https://archiveofourown.org/works/22547254 -- 89k words, updates regularly -- okay grace is the one who rec’d this fic to ME but to anyone stumbling across this reclist on tumblr, THIS FIC IS A MUST READ. Absolutely the BEST, more thought out and gutting portrayal of the flaws of the hero system, and how the different characters struggle with it. This fic GOT to me, hard, I’m still thinking about it a lot. Takes place roughly a decade post-canon, in an AU where Izuku never met All Might or went to UA, and nothing got fixed (yet! they’re trying!!). Features absoulely STELLAR characterization of Midoriya, Shinsou, Todoroki, his sibblings, Ragdoll, and more!!

Hi darling. Sorry to have taken so long with this one. It’s not a particularly easy request to answer. However....I’m going to try and recommend some I think fit the bill!

Danger I Can’t Hide by CelticSky (E, 227K) This one’s got all the tension and drama you’d expect of a World War II story—life and death high stakes, friends and lovers unexpectedly torn apart, battles and heroism, plus the added stakes of classism and homophobia—then add a slow burn, high risk, scorching love affair spanning years. If you want a story that’s complex and fantastically researched, plus lovers to root for, read it. It’s long. But I couldn’t put it down.

Make Your Words A Weapon by @helloamhere (E, 36K) I love everything this author writes. This one just really hit me hard for whatever reason. Maybe it’s the way they explore Louis’ anxiety and coping mechanisms and pain and the way he pushes people away and protects himself, but also wants someone to push back just a bit and love him despite all of that. And the way Harry is the perfect foil for all of it, while also feeling like a fully developed character himself. Yeah, it’s probably all of that. Plus soul marks!

Lollipop by Speechless​ (E, 5K WIP) This is chapter 1 of 2, but it’s such a good short story as it is, it’s worth a read even before the second part is done IMO. The writing is really sparse, in the best kind of way and I loved the vibe of Harry and Louis’ interactions. 

all my love was down on a frozen ground by navigator (E, 16K) This is an old one that I didn’t have bookmarked for some reason. But it’s a favorite and I love everything this author wrote. This is one of those quiet, soft fics with a bit of angst and a lot of internal monologue and gentle conversations. I don’t know, there’s something so gentle about it.  

So much stays unknown till the time comes by becka (E, 5K) Another old one by another author I really like. A short time travel fic that is both sad and sexy. It’s got a bit of an open ending, but you still get the sense everything is going to work out. It’s just a touching little fic (read tags, there’s some internalized homophobia in this one). 

violence of my own touch by 25postcards (14hrflight) (E, 5K) I just found this fic recently, and was so moved by the way this author portrayed both Harry and Louis — the exhaustion, the confusion, the sadness, but also the deep love and need for each other. 

Snips & Snails by aimmyarrowshigh (M, 2K) A beautiful little bit of prose poetry that’s both tender and heart wrenching at the same time.

Forever, Uninterrupted by sparkk (E, 9K) Sexy and emotional (yes, I teared up a little. What of it?). This one goes beyond basic miscommunication and has Harry holding back his feeling so much, it nearly costs him his relationship. 

do you know me by heart by HappyPrincess / @pattern-pals (E, 7K) Read the tags on this one because it’s really visceral, raw, and real. The writing was intense in the best of ways, but this is not a fluffy fic. Omega Harry/Omega trans male Louis

i cannot reach your heart by HappyPrincess / @pattern-pals (E, 10K) This is the second part to the one just above and it’s equally as well written, and has just a hint more happiness for these characters.

once bitten and twice shy by @pinkcords (M, 19K) First of all, for a first fic in this fandom, I thought this author really did a nice job with their characterizations. I especially liked the way they captured Harry’s anger and humiliation and stubbornness. There’s a beefy epilogue as well which I haven’t had a chance to read!

The Woods are Lovely, Dark and Deep by @helloamhere (WIP, 4 part series so far, mixed ratings, 89K) Amazing world building, complex characters, beautiful writing. It’s still a WIP, but it’s so worth reading (and the author says they’re working on more so…fingers crossed)! This one has a fair bit of anxiety and some moments that read as panic attacks, so if mental illness is something you don’t want to read, you might want to avoid this one.

Black With Autumn Rain by Whimsicule (T, 93K) This writer is a favorite. If you like intense, creative stories, with complex characters and tight dialogue, you should read all of their fics. This one has the flavor of a Daphne du Maurier novel – dark, creepy, and moodily romantic. Plus a supernatural edge. It’s so good.

Etched in Salt (is a cathedral of the world) by @helloamhere (E, 24K) You all know I love this author’s writing –– this time they give us a dark, American, thriller with a bit of psychic goodness. Bonus points for Harry taking care of Louis in a very deep way.

bloodsport by @tofiveohfive / @sunflowrsix (E, 40K) American football, exes to lovers, wonderfully written characterizations and, once again…made me cry.

Into the Deep Below by writeivywrite (E, 19K) This one is gorgeous and very dreamy. The fic is about the early stages of figuring out you love more than one person…and it’s so beautifully written. 

Saving Symphony Hall by @helloamhere (E, 125K) Artist Harry. I’ve recommended this one quite a bit because it’s just chock full of so much wonderful stuff – great story, great OT5 friendships, great banter, sexy smut…so much good stuff. In addition I really enjoyed how Harry as an artist was fleshed out. I also really liked the juxtaposition of Artist Harry (who’s also an Alpha) and data driven/left brain Louis (who’s also an Omega). A great read (also, there’s a terrific prequel you might want to start with if you like the concept of the fic).

Just Let Me by @helloamhere (E, 15K) I don’t know how many ways to say this author writes like a dream, but I can’t help recommending them again. The characterizations are so lovely in this one and I really enjoyed the pining and sense of hurt/comfort woven through this fic.

Turning Page by purpledaisy (M, 68K) This author does a wonderful job with their characterizations which makes their fics such a pleasure to read. This one really has you rooting for curmudgeonly Louis and skittish/secretive Harry to figure their shit out and fall in love. 

Don’t Want Shelter by kingsofeverything (FullOnLarrie) / @kingsofeverything (E, 77K) This author does such a good job of creating these characters and their years-long dislike for each other that when they’re forced to work and live together and confront their behavior, the emotions feel so realistic and you’re just rooting for them to figure it all out. Such a great read (plus, “older” Larry, which is such a rare treat in this fandom).

like a bastard on the burning sea by vashtaneradas (NR, 22K) The OG heart breaker. If you can read this without crying, you have no soul.

Tug-Of-War by cherrystreet (E, 63K) I read this one a while ago, so I can’t remember a lot of specifics, but this author is pretty much a sure bet. My notes on this one make me chuckle: “So touching. Tears. Great characterizations. Angst is heart breaking, but relatively brief. Smut is hot af”. Well, there you go!

As I didn’t have too much time to read this week to finish many long fics, some of these recs are WIPs, but I’ll make a note of which ones are completed!

Notices in the Paper - YamBits (WIP!) Word count: 7k Rating: T Relationship: Thorin Oakenshield/Bilbo Baggins

This is one of the fics I’m currently subscribed to, and so should you be imo! The premisse here is Bilbo returning to the Shire with Thorin (whom he has just married) only to find himself homeless… which is a bit of a hassle which he now has to solve with his husband. Except, there is also his newly orphaned nephew to think about.

This is a cute and fresh take on the returning to the shire premisse, with lots of hobbits on screen (so to speak), and while the problems are daunting, the only dragons that need slaying are the Sackville-Bagginses who have made Bag End their hoard of gold, and you need a healthy dose of Shire manners and knowledge to get by the bureaucracies of hobbits… (makes the problems in Erebor seem like a piece of cake, surely.)

Master Burglar - by MordorIsCalling Word count: 8.5k Rating: T Relationship: Thorin Oakenshield/Bilbo Baggins COMPLETED

If you’re in need of a nice, amusing Everybody-lives-nobody-dies post-BOFA fic full of gossiping dwarves who are all ready to show some admiration for Bilbo Baggins, Master Burglar Extraordinaire, this is honestly everything you want.

Thorin is abed, but alive, and Bilbo somehow ends up having a bit of a celebrity status among the dwarves… Oh, and there are lots of feelings involved. It’s all very amusing.

The Song of My Heart - by DomesticGoddess (WIP!) Word count: 16k Rating: M Relationship: Thorin Oakenshield/Bilbo Baggins

There are quite a few dwarves in the Shire fics out there, but this take was new to me! The dwarves of Erebor wants to settle in the Shire, but in order to be allowed to do that Thorin needs to convince a council of hobbits… more specifically, he needs to convince Bilbo Baggins, who’s opinion holds a lot of sway among hobbits, and he really doens’t like Thorin. Basically, Bilbo and Thorin are equals on the political playing field, but they have a lot of figuring out to do… especially since it’s now arranged for them to be married. Whoops.

It’s a WIP and hasn’t been updated since February, but hopefully the author will come back to it. So far, it’s already very entertaining and worth a read if you haven’t already!

(Just a gentle reminder that all hobbits have:) A Passion For Mushrooms - by Chrononautical Word count: 89k Rating: T Relationship: Thorin Oakenshield/Bilbo Baggins COMPLETED

Ok so I read my way through Chrononautical’s breathtaking collection of Hobbit works in January after they finished their recent long fic (The Road From The Garden), and while I honestly could do a whole rec list based on their works alone this one is the one that truly kept me gasping for more with every single chapter. It’s an older work and already has a lot of recognition, but it deserves every bit of it because it’s THAT good.

In this one Bilbo wants to stay in Erebor, tries to find his place in the mountain and simultaneously tries to understand if Thorin hates him or not… the solution to all his troubles end up being a mine full of mushrooms. Probably one of the most brilliantly written takes on complicated dwarven culture I’ve read, doesn’t drag on and keeps you interested all the way through. PLUS there are tonnes of amusing little side-stories to enjoy, as well. If you have a boring weekend ahead, I recommend you fill it with A Passion for Mushrooms!

The Son of Erebor - by lindirs_gaze (WIP? COMPLETED?) Word count: 3.5k Rating: T Relationship: Thorin Oakenshield/Bilbo Baggins

Modern-verse AU where Thorin is Superman, basically. Honestly, the mental image this gives me of Thorin flying around with Bilbo in his arms proper Superman style gives me LIFE. This was such a fun, but way too short read. I read it a couple of weeks ago, but the author is eluding to the possibility of a full fic…

The trio have become close in that time though just recently having begun to call themselves a crew. Ghoul and Party are helplessly attracted to each other, though for some reason denying it. And Kobra? Well he's just himself. A little lonely but soon he has something, or someone, to take his mind off of it. Suddenly my writing schedule has filled up?

I signed up to that WIPS big bang and the first check in is like... End of this week and I'm silently freaking out over it.

I mean... It's not like I have NOTHING written for it. I've got 97k spread out over 11 chapters so far. I think I only need to write two more chapters to finish the story? but it's been an intensely daunting task, hence why I signed up to the WIP BB but... Like... Now I actually have to read through those 97k words, and do so by the 1st check in?

I thought I'd be productive and like, schedule in what fic I work on what day of the week. Today was supposed to be the WIP BB fic day (Clack fic) but I spent it going through my Fleeting Moments playlist, enjoying the feelings, and getting halfway through writing the very last chapter.

It was a productive day, esp since I feel so excited about finishing the last chapter, but, like... TODAY WAS SUPPOSED TO BE CLACK FIC DAY!

*smacks self*

Like, those 97k won't read themselves. I was also trying to remember why I abandoned the fic. And... I'm like 80% sure I know what was bothering me (it was a significant rewrite of some kind). So, like, I could be fine reading through 89k and then BAM, get hit with the chapter I got stuck on and... Get stuck again.

Sigh. I mean, this is why I signed up for the WIP BB, to complete this. It's my precious baby and must be finished. But it's daunting. Also exciting. Like, I really want to finish it so I can publish. Especially since the Clack fandom has come back alive from being presumed dead and shot out into space. I'm so happy about the revival and want people to read this story because... It's just... So near and dear to my heart.

The amount of hours I've poured into it alone astound me. Hours researching medical procedures and military ranks and illnesses. All for what? Details no one will even perceive. Oh well, I do the suffering for myself so I can create something I'm proud of. And maybe get some nice feedback. Feedback makes the suffering worthwhile.

Oh yes! Busy writing schedule. So I now have this massive motivation to finish the epilogue of Fleeting Moments, which is great because for 90% of the time I spent writing this fic I never contemplated or felt motivated to give it a happy ending. And now I figured out what exactly I want to have happen and how and I just want to churn it out.

But I also have this Big Bang going on. And on top of that... I have fucking discovered the Omegaverse and have so many god damn story ideas!

Like... Omegaverse is so full of POTENTIAL?!?! I had a story in my head for probably a year now that just never sat right. It had to structure. No purpose. The world was... What world?! There was none. It was just smutty depraved Roxas getting rooted crap and now... And NOW I have Omegaverse to wrap it up in and give structure, world building, and a purpose to it.

It's like having this one utterly useless thing at home you don't know what to do with, and then you finally figure out how to make it work and it like becomes the most useful thing at your disposal and how did you even live without it before now? That's what Omegaverse feels like to me. A key.

So I'm super excited about that. But also conscious of having WiP BB and Fleeting Moments that need to be done. Plus I also really want to finish The Anomaly this year as well, and I still owe a friend a fanfic. So... Like... Busy busy busy.

At least working from home and not being busy with that because of PANDEMIC gives me more time for writing. And now that my writing mojo is back (thanks to all you stellar people who gave me the feedback juice on Fleeting Moments) I feel motivated and driven to write again, where before I was very dead inside re making the words. I was like that since February this year. So... the change is great. The shift into my old way of being is great. Though I also notice that I am becoming unresponsive to other things (people, responsibilities) because just FUCKING LEAVE ME ALONE TO DO MY WRITING. I gotta work on that. But oooo it feels good to be writing again and excited about sharing that writing.

So, to anyone who got through my rambling, thank you for listening, and the support. If you've ever commented on anything I wrote and/or interacted with me, you honest to God give me life.
