random userbase data time
(listed almost every/every game as one option in case you skipped out on some of the multiplayer ones)
please reblog after you vote for Maximum Data, even if you voted no! if you voted for one of the other options, tag your favorite game(s)!
I am just very interested in the presence of the zelda fanbase :>
please note that, for the sake of this poll, remakes count as one game. so like, if you've played the original ocarina of time and master quest and the 3ds version, that counts as one game.

FANFICTION MASTER POST
You can find me on AO3 at meatjuice. My fics are all available under the readmore cut.
LONG FICS
Brothers in Blood and Spirit: (5/?) POVs: Eras, Legend, Wind.
Summary: Every hero has their weakness. For the captain, it’s his brothers. He will do anything to protect his brothers of the present, just as he did with his brother in the past. (Note: a good look into Eras’ past, this is an au where everything is the same except he has a little brother.)
The Nebula Brigade: (9/?) POVs: Twilight, Eras, Time.
Summary: The Hyrule Empire has reigned supreme for decades, gradually taking over countless planets in the solar system. The only thing standing between the Empire and complete control over the galaxy is a band of rebels. One exiled rebel encounters an Empire soldier and decides to spare his life, and he soon discovers the soldier may play a key role in bringing the Empire down. Despite all odds against them, they work together to bring peace back to the galaxy. (Note: Space au!)
Raise the Red Sails: (1/?) POVs: Spirit, Ravio, Twilight, Eras.
Summary: Hyrule has sent the Royal Navy after mysterious artifacts to uncover the location of the Triforce. Only with this power will they be able to put an end to the evils plaguing their land. The only thing that stands in their way is a band of pirates who seek the same goal of obtaining the Triforce for themselves. Only one group will emerge victorious. Or so they assume. (Note: I watched Our Flag Means Death and naturally had to make a pirate au.)
ONE SHOTS
Snow Day Off: (1143 words) POV: Four
Summary: Link experiences his first time making a snowman. (Note: for the HS Server’s December 2023 prompt ‘Snowed in’.
Fall From Grace: (1535 words) POV: Eras
Summary: Long hair is the sign of a fierce and skilled knight. To have one’s hair cut off by an opponent is the ultimate sign of defeat. To have one cut off their own hair is the ultimate sign of shame. (Notes: canon scene five years prior to the start of HS)
Lost Loftwing: (2207 words) POV: Sky
“Stand down,” Sky ordered with what little authority he could muster. He wasn’t used to that tone, he wasn’t fond of ordering people around. He was even less fond of people trying to kidnap and hurt his loftwing.
ONE SHOTS, BUT YEEHAW
It’s a Date: (919 words) POV: Eras
Summary: A sparring session turns into an admitting your feelings session.
A Horse by Any Other Name: (1531 words) POV: Eras
Summary: Sometimes the bond between a man and his borrowed horse can be so personal.
Dreams and Fireside Chats: (1788 words) POV: Eras
Summary: Link has an unpleasant dream and finds comfort in the kindness of those he's close to.
Bathhouse Boy Best Friends: (1629 words) POV: Twilight
Summary: Two bros, chillin' in a hot tub, five feet apart cause they might be gay??
The Wingman: (2555 words) POV: Sky
Summary: Sky copes with being touch starved naturally by trying to play matchmaker for his companions.
MISCELLANEOUS
At Ease, Captain: (7058 words) POV: HW Link
Summary: Link projects his problems onto his companions, specifically their Champion, but he's definitely okay and fine and not sleep-deprived. (Note: I wrote this at the same time I was creating HS! It’s also around the time when I first read LU. So this was written with neither in mind, but you can really see the prototypes of my versions peeking through in this one.)
The Captain’s Log: (2161 words) POV: LU Warriors
Summary: He dipped his pen in the inkwell and brought it to the paper, he frowned when he pressed too hard and made a large spot on the page. Link would never consider himself an artist, but he prided himself in his penmanship. During the war there was no time for fancy scripts and long words, his fellow captains were lucky if they got more than three lines of cucco scratch. Calligraphy was something he picked up later, he loved the way words flowed on paper. But now, his hands betrayed him. OR: One of those Warriors and Legend journal fics you always hear about but not really.

Hello hello!!!
Soooo.... im playing Skyward Sword and there's so much to talk about, but two things are taking over my brain and would love your thoughts on them.
1) In a lot of LU fics we see the majority of the Chain disliking Hylia due to the fact the she uses and traumatized the heroes to do her work and Sky normaly protests that she didn't out of hate or not caring for them. Sun clearly tells him that she used him, but was sorry. Do you think Sky just accepted it because the world (and Sun) needed saving, or it was blind love for her and he was willing to go through anything for her?
2) This one... this one had me pausing the game multiple times (like right now...) Why is no one talking about how Sky has the full Triforce?? Gods/Goddesses/Deities+ can't hold the Triforce, meaning Sun couldn't due to her being Hylia and that left Sky to carry it alone, yet Hyrule is the only one talked about having the full Triforce.
Thoughts??
There's always a ton to talk about with Skyward Sword! :D
I won't get into the whole "the Chain hates Hylia" thing as I've touched on it before, but specifically for Sky, I think for sure there are mixed and complicated feelings. I think at the end of the day Sky is the kind of person who forgave his bully despite years of being harrassed - he would absolutely forgive Sun/Hylia, especially since Sun herself didn't even remember. I think seeing everything that Demise was capable of, and potentially seeing the damage and destruction he'd caused in the past, Sky would understand why he had to do this and why Hylia did what she did. Wouldn't make it any less uncomfortable of a feeling, though - does Sun actually love him, or was that ingrained in her as Hylia? Does he even mean anything to her? Could there have been another way? I think at the end of the day he'd reconcile himself with it, he'd learn to trust Sun again (he was clearly still trying to save his best friend in the game despite what he'd learned - I'm sure the actual meaning of it was just displaced to the back of his head and didn't quite sink in until after), but it sure is complicated. He'd have way more right than any of others to be upset about it, though.
I think Hylia became a mortal for the sole purpose of wielding the Triforce herself so Sky wouldn't even need to. I think Sky was the backup plan, honestly, but I have to replay the game to be sure. But yeah, he was destined to wield the Triforce if Sun couldn't do it in time, if she had to instead maintain the seal while he got the item himself. I'm assuming the reason people don't make a bigger deal about it is because Sky utilized the Triforce and then it kind of just chills in his realm, out in the open; he doesn't necessarily have it anymore. I don't know about Hyrule's games, except that he had to collect the Triforce as well to awaken the princess, but I'm assuming people make a huge fuss over it because he still has it, whereas Sky's Triforce is just chilling at the temple? Because I think Legend used the Triforce as well in A Link to the Past, and Warriors definitely used the Triforce (though he needed all three separate wielders to do it, he couldn't do it alone). And Wind had to rebuild the Triforce, right? Or at least the Courage piece? Not all of the boys have wielded the entire Triforce (it might just be Sky, Legend, and Hyrule), but I think Hyrule is the one who might still have it? What is interesting is how Sky had to forge his soul in the silent realms just as much as he had to forge the Master Sword in the goddess flames, and in doing so he was basically molded into the perfect person to wield the Triforce. That's really freaking cool. Sky and Fi have more in common than people note.

I’m gonna list some crazy/random theories I don’t think will actually be in TOTK but if I somehow get one of them right it will give me gloating rights
Zelda will not only be a playable character but this game will allow two person multiplayer where one person can play as link and the other as Zelda
Nintendo is bringing back the magic system similar to the adventure of link and a link to the past and uses of magic will drain a magic meter (or perhaps the vials?)
TOTK will have even more fashion than BOTW and will gung-ho the fashion aspect like triforce heroes
It will be revealed that the loftwings became the ooca in TP and they are now an even more fucked up bird looking things in TOTK
The Minish are back and they are actually giants now
Return of the old man from the first Zelda game but he is specifically not Rauru or Kaepora Gaebora
Multiple viewpoint puzzles aka a locked camera angle on top down or side scrolling to change things up (and also pay tribute to the early 2D games)
There will be an underground civilization of a race we have never met before including intricate architecture (they are specifically not a monster race)
The exact same as the point above but the race is actually the vigoroth looking fellas from skyward sword
Temples are back except every temple is a water temple except one which is ice themed
We live out the events of The Creature of the Black Lagoon (mummified river zora arm and all) (aka river zora are back but only like two are back bc they are mostly extinct and the first clue to finding them is a mummified arm in rock)
Sidon becomes evil
Kilton is the actual voice we heard in the trailers (Matt Mercer I think is the va name)
We will obviously have sky exploration and most likely underground exploration, but we will also be expanding the map horizontally and also travel the sea
We finally meet Hyrule’s Kafei
The time reversal/momentum reversal mechanic can also be used on architecture and we can rebuilt things like the temple of time (and that’s how we access one of the dungeons)
Link fights shadow link but instead of being a mirror version of Totk link, he’s fighting all the past versions of link (with all their weapon and equipment upgrades) (okay this sounds sick as hell I want this so bad)
Link gets a growth spurt (He grew one inch)
I am having so much fun with these fhjdiwbfwwduhfdwi I will add more if I think of anymore good ones

Rambly thoughts on Ganondorf:
Many of Nintendo’s franchises don’t focus on things like continuity and complex morality. For them, characters are thought of in a gameplay manner rather than a storytelling manner. For example, Bowser is evil because he kidnaps Princess Peach because we need Mario (the player) to find and save Peach. Bowser is not (entirely) evil when we play with him in Mario Tennis, Golf, Party, etc. games because we need him to be playable.
In the same way, Link and the player need an enemy to fight. Ganon, or Demise, Calamity Ganon, they will all be evil simply to be a villain. Nintendo will always make light good and darkness evil, monsters are always evil and born from evil, and people are only evil if they are corrupted by the evil thing.
I would say the most complexity for Ganon we get is actually the introduction of Ganondorf the man in Ocarina of Time. He is introduced as a politician and leader of the Gerudo, who also are pretty morally complex (at least for the Zelda games). The Gerudo are a tribe of “bandits and thieves” but their second-in-command Nabooru becomes the Sage of Spirit so they can’t be absolutely bad. The first time we see of Ganondorf is child Zelda saying “everyone trusts this guy but I think he’s evil!” which well, he is, but human (or I guess Gerudo) Ganondorf is much different from evil pig Ganon- the incarnation of evil, that we had only seen in the previous games.
Ocarina of Time doesn’t give us much to work with, but it does give us speculation. Monsters are monsters are pure evil beings, as these stories go, but like I said before npcs are only truly evil when they are corrupted by evil thoughts. Otherwise they are tragic.
Skyward Sword gives us another reason to think Ganondorf could be influenced by evil in the form of Demise. Ganondorf is an incarnation of Demise in the same way Zelda is an incarnation of Hylia, but Zelda isn’t fully good in fact she can be quite flawed. In the same way, Ganondorf could be merely influenced by his past life as Demise but otherwise a more morally complexed character.
Link himself isn’t even technically a “purely good” character, instead Zelda is the incarnation of Hylia, the one with the Light powers, and normally placed directly opposite Ganon. Link is more the errand boy of Zelda, or otherwise just a guy placed in a situation trying to help the people. His triforce and motif, Courage, is more humanistic as courage can only be gained in the face of fear. Rather than always being good or always being evil Link simply chooses to be a hero and help others.
I think that choice of the main character provides a good parallel to Ganondorf, that he chooses above all to be evil not that he is evil itself (except in pig form). It’s also interesting that we always start the adventure after Ganon’s enacted his revenge or is getting ready for part 2. Every time we as Link get to Ganon he’s already got beef with Hyrule.
Makes you wonder why.
…Or not, because clearly with Tears of the Kingdom retconning EVERYTHING in the “timeline” we get good-old-purely-evil Ganondorf anyways.
So while it would have been cool to see the kingdom of Hyrule being called out for past mistakes, I think that might be too much story in Nintendo’s gameplay. I understand if some people hate the whole unshakeable good/evil thing, because irl there is TONS of people who claim they’re purely good and are definitely not, but I don’t think they will ever uno reverse and make the royal family secretly the bad guys or something.
…or make Ganondorf finally reincarnate into an ally please Nintendo set him free it was the same damn man sealed since Ocarina give him a break

This idea falls into the concept that Player gets the Triforce of Power and the Link and Zelda are toddlers who just learned to walk.
Basically Player gets dropped to Hyrule cuz Ganon/Demise was fucking around and being a general nuisance. They're armed with their own hero experience, it's untraditional and they have a chaotic neutral bordering true neutral mindset but hey, they'll save a country from great evil if no one else is gonna do it.
From there they find out the happenings of this Hyrule, Ganon came back and is fucking shit up and the prophesized hero and princess have not appeared. Okay, if that's the case then Player just won't worry about that because they're no in a position to fight an incarnate of all evil. Except... they find these two little children who decide to imprint on her like wolf pups and will cry if they try to leave them. This is fine, they'll just find somebody to take care of them and the kids will get over it eventually because they have prior engagements that take precedence over this.
Only to find out that these two literal babies are the hero and princess from ancient legend repeated throughout history every few centuries and or millenia. This revelation hits Player harshly because they know *exactly* what's gonna happen if word got out that these two are the key to stopping the evil plaguing the kingdom. So they do the most logical thing and just do the hero's job themselves.
Player befriends a young adult Impa who's more than willing to take the two tots as Player kicks Ganon's teeth in. But before they told Impa that they found a way back home but it was a one chance one way type of deal. So Player would beat the snot out of Ganon and leave immediately after. It was for the best, Player didn't belong here and their presence could cause trouble as a foreign entity to a world with a fairly fragile balance. It would be fine.
Except Player comes back from the fight, with fresh malice scars and scorches to boot. They don't look like they're in pain however, they look extremely perturbed by whatever transpired before they returned. Impa finally asks what's wrong, why are they still here if they said they had only one chance to return home.
Player meets her eyes, an unreadable expression present on their face. They lift their right arm and present the back of their hand. In the center of it, the Triforce of Power gleams in the light.
This.... got a lot more complicated than it should have.
Aka this is Player (who might be the guide idk) gets yoinked and decides to play the hero in Hyrule. This is my take on the lil tiny Link and Zelda who I affectionately named Trinket and Charm. I hope you found this funny. I might be writing for this later.
And for flavor this Player gets to have a rideable tiger beast mount because horses are cool but I think tigers are cooler.
Player can't seem to catch a break huh?
Supporting the Triforce of Power certainly ain't gonna help with any if that.

So I was rereading some of your old posts bc u have the Best loz takes and you mentioned theorizing the fierce deity is the first hero and as a certified first hero stan I NEED to know more abt this!!! Can you go more into depth?
Oh dear mutual oh my dear friend- I have SO MANY thoughts about how the fierce deity may be the first hero, let me walk you down my whole thought process as I'm wholly so unwell over the very concept of the fierce deity.
First of all, this whole idea came to my brain during my majora's mask playthrough and I really enjoyed how it was such an interesting parallel to hyrule. With... the exception of two very important things, Ganondorf and Zelda, power and wisdom, the two things that seem to consume every single bit of hyrulean history no matter the time period. Another thing that's interesting is that they're are far fewer instances of the triforce in termina compared to hyrule and if you prefer the 3ds remake- which I played- over the n64, the triforces that were on the statues were removed.
That means it's definitely hinted that termina doesn't have a triforce or at least it's so far ago in the past and its people have little to no attachment to it. There's no princess, there's no demon king, there's no triforce! But the one thing that it does have that hyrule does not is actual evidence of the hero, the fierce deity mask.
One thing that's always stumped me about the greater loz timeline or just all of the various games- there's little to no... influence of the heroes spirit, or courage, whichever you like to refer all of the Link's under. Ganondorf and Zelda can exist on their own without relying on the other's existence, but Link can't! At most the only real things we see that carry Link through history is faded legends of a hero, but that's it. The hero holds no presence in the minds of the people of hyrule, they simply appear and disappear when disaster calls for them.
But, as I mentioned, termina is the sole exception to this as the fierce deity mask exists and it holds Link's exact visage. Hylia is painted in Zelda's features, Demise is painted in Ganondorf's features, so what does that make the fierce deity?
Another interesting fact to me is that nothing relating to the hero exists in skyward sword, so that must mean that whatever the fierce deity is- they must've existed beforehand. Also, we really don't have any idea for just how old termina is, but if you see them as being a direct mirror to hyrule then it makes sense that they've been around just as long.
So here's my idea: the fierce deity must've existed before even skyward sword, meaning that they likely existed around the time of Hylia's and Demise's first initial battle that brought hylians to the sky. But at the same time, the fierce deity had to be gone from memory by the time of skyward sword.
Which leads to another idea of mine: why is termina hidden away? Virtually no one is ever going to stumble across it, the only reason Time did was because he was literally dragged by skull kid. The portal is hidden deep inside the lost forest at the bottom of a hole that none with rational sense would ever think about going down. One of my first thoughts during my playthrough was that it seemed to be on purpose, to hide its very existence away.
Its said that the goddesses created termina, but did they covet that land as they did hyrule? Did they give it the same blessings and care as it did to the land that Hylia and Demise reigned over? I would say not as the goddesses have seemingly abandoned it and so has its people, the goddesses and triforce have no power there.
All of this leads to my final conclusion: the fierce deity is the first hero and perhaps either fought by Hylia's side during the war against Demise, or the fierce deity was the very thing who dealt the killing blow to Demise.
But here's the thing that really interests me about the fierce deity, its in his very name. Demise, Ganondorf, the Demon King... he's commonly seen as one of the strongest entities in the entirety of hyrule, so much so that his visage and tales of his strength carry through all of history. Despite all that, he only carries the title of king? Which makes the fierce deity even stranger in comparison because what is stronger, more intimidating, so much so that the very name of a god- is in his name?
Wouldn't you think such a grand title would undoubtedly carry some kind of weight in the greater sense of hyrules history? But it doesn't, which leads me to my next thought.
The fierce deity was purposely taken to termina, whether it was willingly or not is up to you but I personally think it wasn't. All of that power was sealed into a mask and then that mask was trapped in a world that was hidden away from the rest of all the worlds and dimensions. What does it mean that Time comes across a mask that looks just like him and holds such immense power? A power that rivals darkness itself but not with light, just the willingness to meet that darkness with its own.
The fierce deity in my mind is... powerful, the first hero ever to exist and his strength reflects that. Someone who was able to go toe to toe with Demise at his strongest and win, not only that, but to prove his strength as a god even over Demise. This is me saying that the fierce deity and the first hero are one and the same!
Also why the fierce deity was trapped inside termina is genuinely up to interpretation. Maybe the goddesses and Hylia both became fearful of his power, maybe the people themselves became scared of him, maybe he was trapped. Who knows! That's the beauty of creativity you can truly do whatever you please lol.
But yeah here's my incredibly elaborate, detailed headcanon that the fierce deity has way more worldbuilding than what's shown and is actually the first ever wielder of courage. I also have a whole headcanon that only the Link's can wear the fierce deity mask but that's a WHOLE other meta in of itself lmao

what do u think abt alttp now that u finished it??
OKAY SO. overall i liked it! i love the hero of legend, i love the early-loz plotline, i love that ganon actually has a fuckton of character AND magic attacks AND the ENTIRETY OF THE TRIFORCE, which was still insane of them to do (if ever there was a game where ganon truly almost Won, it's alttp). and i love what that means for the hero of legend even if he doesn't know it (tfw your predecessor, who was roughly your age give or take a year, sucks bad and dies so you essentially clean up his entire mess and become the strongest link in the entire franchise in the process). but as for the game itself.....to be quite honest i thought the dungeons got really fucking tedious. i feel like they could have halved the amount of dungeons in this game and added more plot in or something because genuinely towards the end (with the exception of ganon's tower) it felt like they were running out of ideas. i made it in and out of the thieves' town dungeon in like. 10 minutes? 15 minutes? and it looked the exact same as every single other dungeon.
BUT! the boss battle theme was fucking ICONIC. i know it's a real simple melody overall because it's a 1991 game but it's one of those songs where like. you can HEAR the potential in it and then they remaster the theme years later in albw and it's like YEAHHHHH THIS IS WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT (the noble demon also made two orchestral covers of it. here's the most recent one and it's perfection). tbh this entire game's ost is iconic and you can REALLY feel how it was THE game that truly set the formula in stone for the rest of the series. everything from the master sword to the hookshot to catching fairies in a bottle to the blue ocarina (specifically. the original loz had a recorder) that does things (looking at you ocarina of time & majora's mask & minish cap) to the lost woods to EVERYTHING ELSE. this game was IT it was the true beginning to the whole rest of the series and i think it's SO cool being able to see that in every moment you play.
and also i loved that link had pink hair and his uncle had bright purple hair, implying that it's a family trait. that's so fucking funny to me.
I WILL SAY THOUGH. i played the gba port instead of the original and if any of you have an option between the two...play the original. on an emulator if you have to. the gba port is (obviously) meant for a smaller screen, which means that the amount that you get to SEE on screen is....much smaller than you see on the original, which was meant for a bigger screen, which cuts into your playing experience overall because you're supposed to be able to see an entire room and you just. can't (this factors in when you have to hookshot to things and whatnot).

Happy Birthday to two great games
Especially since they share my own, so I got wonderful games released on my b-day twice. Not to mention the ones that were released just a few days before.
Ocarina of Time and A Link to the Past are pretty much my favorite Zelda games. I played both without the benefit of extensive walkthroughs and stuff on the internet and the challenge of having to figure everything out was really good for that time in my life (I HAD time back then).
ALTTP was my first true Zelda game, I only sort of dabbled with the original two because I never owned them, and basically I've been obsessed with Zelda ever since the little pink haired dude got woken up by Zelda's voice in his head, on a stormy night in Hyrule. I finished it so many times, and I'm working on a novelization! I know, I know, SUPER original idea. But Holy Crap Two Cakes right?
Ocarina of Time is also one of my favorites because it expanded the universe and the lore so much, and it was just such an awesome game to play. The story, the gameplay, the exploration, the ability to muck about with nothing to stop you except Navi's constant pleas to get back on track... and I didn't even mind the Water Temple that much. Ironically, the one that kind of stops me when I play through again is the Shadow Temple, I just plain don't like it.
ANYWAY!
I have no art. Here are some stories instead:
For Ocarina of Time:
For A Link to the Past:
And I'll just paste this here too... it's part of Moving On, but this scene is just the Hero of Legends making his wish.
Moving On, extract from Chapter 1: A Link to the Past
Link clutched the Triforce to his chest, eyes closed tightly.
He didn't know what to wish for: Ganon had done too much harm, and Link suspected some of it couldn't be fixed, even by the Triforce: his uncle was dead, and so was the King; the maidens' souls had been freed, but their lives remained lost, even the Princess's.
What was there left to wish for? Ganon had already taken everything. Even the mystical Golden Realm was gone, the reflection of Hyrule's hopes and dreams turned into a nightmare by the demon.
There were many things Link wanted and could have wished for, but they were all so selfish he couldn't bring himself to do it. He wanted his uncle back, he wanted the maidens back. He wanted all the guards Aghanim had made him kill to be alive and themselves again, and to forgive him. Above all, he wanted the Princess back. He wanted her to look at him like that again, like she had when he had saved her, as if he was the sun itself. [...] He'd happily settle for her just to be alive again, even if she never again so much as stood in his presence.
If he were to wish for any one of those things, however, wouldn't it mean giving up on the others and on everything else Ganon had soiled or destroyed? He couldn't pick one wrong to right, he wanted it all: he wanted ALL the harm Ganon had done to be undone; he wanted everything back just like it was before Ganon had gotten his paws on the Triforce.
As soon as the thought formed in Link's mind and before he even realized he had effectively made his wish or dared to hope such an all encompassing wish could be valid, the Triforce started shining, so brightly as to hurt Link's eyes right through his closed eyelids. It shone brighter and brighter, and Link had to fight back the urge to let go of it to cover his eyes with his hands. He turned his head sideway as far back as it could go instead, but it didn't help: the glow of the Triforce was filling the whole room.
Then, as suddenly as it had started, the glow was gone. Link opened his eyes warily, afraid the Triforce may start shining again. It was still in his arms, but it was back to normal and thankfully stayed that way. Link looked around instinctively for any visible effect from his wish, and gasped: through the door to the room where they had fought, Ganon was scrambling up, whole and seemingly unhurt. Link's eyes went from the Demon to the Triforce and widened.
The Triforce had granted his wish, all right: everything was back, just like before Ganon had claimed the Goddesses' artefact… including Ganon.
Link's eyes went back to the pig and met the beast's own. He stuffed the Triforce into his tunic and took out his bow and arrow, expecting Ganon to charge at him. The Demon did no such thing, however; he hissed, and before Link had even had a chance to shoot a single arrow at him, he vanished with a puff of smoke.
Link's breathing accelerated. Just like that, Ganon had escaped and it was anyone's guess where he'd resurface and what he'd do - and whatever it was, Link felt it would be his fault. He clenched his teeth, re-sheathed his sword and took out the mirror that had the power to bring him back to the Real World; the first thing to do was to let the King know Ganon was loose. After that, assuming he didn't get thrown in the dungeon, Link would happily do whatever was asked of him to fix things.
As Link looked into the mirror, the room around him faded and was replaced by the castle's inner court and the sound of deafening cheers.
Link had never felt LESS deserving of cheers. He ignored them and looked around frantically, looking for the Princess; he found her standing next to her father, beaming at him. Link's heart skipped and for one glorious second, he was happier than he would ever have thought possible.
Then, reality came crashing back.
"Your Majesties," he said, addressing both of them, "he…"
"Come inside," the King cut him off, setting off towards the entrance to the throne room. "Close the door behind you," he added without turning around.
Zelda and Link followed him.
"He doesn't want a panic on his hands," Zelda explained in a whisper as they walked, "and since you obviously have bad news…"
Link nodded without meeting her eyes.
Zelda closed the door behind them once they were inside, shooing the few who had followed away with an apologetic smile.
"Firstly," the King said as he sat on his throne, "Link, I must express my gratitude, and I hope to do so properly once you have told me your news and we have dealt with it. You need to know that nothing you might tell us will change the fact you have single-handedly saved not only my daughter and myself, but the whole of Hyrule."
"He's back," Link blurted out, barely hearing him. "Ganon. And he ran off… I messed up, I really messed up. I'm so sorry… I didn't realize, I was just thinking, and the Triforce did it…"
He collapsed to his knees, shaking. He could still hear the cheering outside and it was making him feel worse. Here was everyone, so happy that all was well…
"Young man, are you saying Ganon is still alive?" the King asked.
Link nodded without raising his eyes. He felt a hand on his shoulder and the next moment, Princess Zelda's face was inches away from his own, looking serious but thankfully not angry. His heart automatically started hammering in his chest.
"Is he in the Dark World?" the Princess asked.
Link nodded again.
"Light World," he corrected. "I think. I didn't look outside, but…"
"What about the Triforce?" she interrupted him.
"I got it," Link said, pulling it out of his tunic. "But Ganon ran away, he could be…"
Link didn't finish his sentence, having suddenly lost his train of thoughts: the Princess was smiling at him. He swallowed and made a valiant – if doomed - effort at reassembling his thoughts. Zelda got up from her crouch and pulled him along so that they were both standing again.
"The only place Ganon can possibly be is the Light World," Zelda said gently, still smiling. "Remember, even with his power increased by the Triforce, he could not escape from there – that is why he needed the maidens: he wanted to use them to break the seals and thus escape his prison. Now that he has lost the maidens and that the seals are back to the level they were before Aghanim captured them, Ganon will not be able to escape the Light World, at least for a while."
Link sighed in relief and nodded to signify he understood.

Sheikah Link AU?
Ah, sorry it has taken me a while to get to this ask AJ! I got a little distracted, sorry for the wait 😅
So basically my idea for a Sheikah Link AU (written in my notebook) was that Link was raised by the Sheikah, aka Impa and Purah's family.
There was a lot of thing that I had written from BotW/Age of Calamity, such as there's no ancient technology nor Master Kohga; since this is technically 100 years ago, Sooga is basically the leader of the Yiga Clan and Link's evil counterpart. I had written a whole history about how the Yiga Clan came to be despite there not being any technology to banish, so in a nutshell basically Ganon basically used telepathy on a bunch of people, and some of the Sheikah were affected by this and joined his side and remained loyal.
Also apparently the Sheikah live extra-super long but age really slowly. Like Impa is 104 in this AU but looks 20 years old. (I have no idea what was going through my head while writing this...)
Anyways, Link becomes Zelda's bodyguard after a failed assassination attempt on her life, leading the King to give him also a secret mission to investigate the assassination attempted (leading him to the discovery of the Yiga, which is unknown to all except the Sheikah tribe). Paya (who also appears in this AU and taking the role of Link's younger sister even though she was the daughter of Robbie and not the chief; I think I might've forgotten while writing in my notebook or retconned myself anyways--) also becomes the princess's handmaiden (not really that plot relevant; I'm sure past me was going to do something with that but that's what I have written down).
A few things about the other characters: Impa has a rivalry with Link, due to it being unfair because she is a lot more wiser than him due to age, etc. Purah is also the chieftain, taking over when her father dies (probably Link had played some part of it; past me wasn't sure either). Princess Zelda instead of being interested in Sheikah Technology (since there wasn't any) she is instead interested in the science of magic; aka trying to make sense of all the magical shenanigans around Hyrule such as fairy fountains, wizzrobes, etc., mainly out of her own insecurity of feeling magicless (this was probably my way of making sense of the whole "oh if Zelda focused on the ancient technology she would've found the answer to her powers" that BotW tries to keep telling us which didn't make sense to me).
Back to the story (sorry if I'm hopping all over the place): Zelda is trying to learn about the Sheikah magic but ignores Link because, despite being raised by Sheikah, he's still Hylian so in her mind he wasn't really useful, so she talks with Paya a lot (despite being physically, and I guess mentally 10 (is what I had written in my notes) despite being 53 in Hylian years). In my notes apparently Link and Zelda argue a lot, but about what I have no idea lol (Paya is the messenger between the two for a while though lol). But then the Yiga tried to assassinate her again and things started to heal between them (also confirming Link's suspicions that it was the Yiga Clan behind the assassination attempts).
From this attempt, they had gotten a Yiga weapon to which Zelda was able to analyze because they were covered in a kind of dark magic, something that only the Master Sword could cure of (so thank goodness Link was there). I had written in my notes that this dark magic was caused by the triforce of power, sooooo guess what the triforce is back in this au lol.
Anyways, they go to Korok Forest to retrieve the Master Sword (how Zelda knew that the Master Sword was the key to repelling the dark magic idk either lol), as she kind of assumes that the Link is the reincarnated hero (and if she was wrong, well she could pull the sword due to having the blood of the goddess, right?). She leads him through the Lost Woods due to the secret being passed through the royal family, where they arrive in the sacred grove with the last remaining Kokiri guarding the Master Sword. He could only grant those access to the sword through a battle, so Link steps up to the challenge. The Kokiri guard was able to match Link in skill, and Link proves himself worthy of the sword when the Triforce of Courage glowed on his hand. He pulls the sword, becomes the hero of legend, and everything is all fine (except now Zelda is sad because her theory was right and now he has fulfilled his divine destiny).
So nearing off what I had written in my notes, Zelda goes to pay a visit to Urbosa (her excuse being to help with Urbosa's baby once it comes, but we all know it's probably to help sort out her feelings about Link and divine destinies and all that jazz) and while Link is wandering the desert trying to even grasp his newfound destiny he gets kidnapped by the Yiga. Aaaaaand that is where my notes leave off XD
I have more, bullet point notes at the end of it but its just some random ideas, like changing Kohga to being the main antagonist and the rules of the Triforce (like having their piece being awakened by a selfless act), and an idea for the sequel where Link and Zelda goes adventuring with Urbosa's son who is named Ganondorf (and also gets the Triforce of Power despite already establishing that the Yiga has the Triforce of power. Oops).

HEADCANON COMPILATION: GENERAL TIMELINE (POST-OOT TO TP)
i was going through my headcanons tag on this blog   &   decided to compile/expand on what i had previously written regarding post-oot. surprisingly enough, these headcanons from 2019-ish still hold up to my interpretation of link. the details might change in the future, of course.
* NOTE: if you write any of the characters i mention (ie. oot zelda, ganondorf), you don't have to adhere to anything i bring up. these are my personal thoughts. i'm 100% cool with adapting to different interpretations of how everything plays out. that's the beauty of rping, don't you think? ^^
after being returned to the past by princess zelda, link sneaks past the guards to hyrule castle's courtyard. there, he meets the young zelda. for her, this might be their first time meeting. for him, it's the past repeating itself... but now, there's no fairy by his side, and link is more mature than he used to be.
link does everything he can to warn the royal family   &   expose ganondorf's true intentions. the terrible future he experienced won't repeat itself  —  not if link can help it.
he stays for a while. he spends time with the princess and reconnects with familiar faces... or, at least, link attempts to; they don't know him in this timeline. (that realization hits him hard.) all the while, the young hero searches for any signs of navi. epona becomes his steed once more during this time.
eventually, the search leads him to the land of termina. it's surreal to see familiar faces, except none of them are the same as their hyrulean counterparts. link gets cursed; he helps people, clears temples, collects masks... three days repeat over and over again until he awakens the giants   &   defeats majora with tatl the fairy by his side.
once again, it's just link and epona on the road. but why does tatl's absence hurt despite knowing it wouldn't last?
link resumes his travels and helps those in need. every now and then, he is back in his homeland with peculiar-looking masks in his possession. link keeps growing in height (one day, he notices he's seventeen again); his equipment changes. some days, he looks haunted.
the day ganondorf's execution goes terrible wrong, the triforce of courage burns on the back of his left hand.   &   all link feels is dread: it's still not over.
it takes years until he (reluctantly) gives up on his search. after accepting the offer of becoming a royal knight, he seems to settle down. (alternatively: he enlists and rises through the ranks as a competent swordsman.)
now, onto the depressing part of this, which i'm placing under read more. cw: death + a non-graphic mention of injury and eye trauma.
link's death isn't peaceful. it doesn't come to him in his sleep, no; it comes to him on the battlefield. the hero succumbs to his injuries and blood loss sometime after he pierces the enemy general's heart. the battle is won, but link is no more.
the loss of his right eye   &   the stab in his gut count among those injuries.
his death leaves an unborn child fatherless. the teachings of the old aren't passed down until much, much later; the hero of time becomes a spirit burdened by his regrets, a shade of his former self.
they bury him in hyrule. the exact location of his grave is lost to the sands of time. but some say he might have been granted a final resting place on the castle grounds...

idk anything about loz but do you wanna explain how hyrule is old as balls
Tumblr media
i would LOVE to explain why hyrule is old as balls!!! this applies to both hyrule as a kingdom and the land itself
ok so. first of all. all the mainline games technically fit into a timeline. now the timeline was made AFTER most of the games came out and its clearly not nintendo's no.1 priority when they make their games (it's not mine normally either. personally my preferred interpretation is that all the games are just different versions of the same hyrulean folktale? but the timeline is fun to consider) but nevertheless it IS canonical and amazingly they don't seem to really overtly contradict each other?? I haven't played a lot of the games so I don't know for sure but it works
anyway this is the timeline
Tumblr media
orignally published in 2011 in the hyrule historia, this is a version where someone added breath of the wild, as nintendo stated it comes at the end of the timeline. now you may notice 3 splits. that's not really super important here but botw supposedly comes at the end of all of them equally. unlikely for the one on the far right, but again, unimportant rn)
first thing to establish before we really start getting into it, with the exception of a few games with direct sequels, all of these games have new incarnations of zelda, link, and ganon. (with the exception of twilight princess, the second game in the middle line, which includes the same ganon from the previous game) I haven't played every zelda game, but the ones that I have played present you with the story of the cycle as though it is far enough back that its a mixture of history and legend. everyone who would remember the last events is dead by the time there's a new cycle. so there's at minimum, probably 150-200 years between each new cycle, keep that in mind
now, I'm starting at breath of the wild and tears of the kingdom because I wanna work my way backwards. so, in breath of the wild, it's already been 100 years since the last time anything significant happened. we're already working on a timespan of 100 years. what happened 100 years prior is that link, zelda, and 4 champions were prepping for the next time ganon rose, and then he did but he got them off guard and they weren't ready and most of them died and link had to be put asleep for 100 years to get healed while zelda kept ganon from completely destroying the world in the meantime.
NOW before THAT, the hyrule of botw's LAST cycle was 10k years ago. that is a LONG fucking time already, it's so old that this hyrule is incredibly divorced from its history, the more significant lore of the triforce is little more than a symbolic royal family crest, and it isn't directly referenced at all. all that this hyrule knows is that 10k years ago was the last time ganon rose, and hero and princess defeated him, so they know that they're gonna have to prep for it again, I also can't actually remember but I think? this may also be the first generation in a while that knows of the legend at all, hence why they're the first to prep for it. so anyway, already, at the end of the timeline, hyrule as a civilization is at a minimum 10k years old, for reference, in OUR world, 10k years ago humans were still living in caves. earth was just coming out of the ice age.
now, the latest game, tears of the kingdom actually shows us this 10k years ago, it's shown to us as the early days of the kingdom with its first king and queen. BUT it's still at the end of the timeline. how do I know this? and not that it's possibly at the start? 1. that contradicts a fair amount of previously established lore lol. in tears of the kingdom you get show this dessicated ganon mummy that's been lving under the castle from 10k years ago. if that was the beginning of hyrule entirely then it means for the entirety of the timeline there's been 2 ganons in existence. which is kind of. um. not how it works. ("but what about the ganon they fight in botw?" you may ask. I get the impression that wasn't a real ganon but just a manifestation of mummy ganon's power as he attempts to break free so its not like. a new ganon incarnation)
so anyway, it doesn't work super well if 10k years ago hyrule is actually the first hyrule, and already in the lore the kingdom of hyrule has risen and fallen countless times, it's gone through lots of wars. so I'm thinking the most likely explanation is that hyrule from any previous games fell, all memory of it died out, and then a new hyrule eventually rose in its place, hence why the king and queen self identify as the first king and queen of hyrule. so, AGAIN, the hyrule at THE END OF THE TIMELINE. is already like. hundreds or thousands of years removed from all the previous cycles.
now we're gonna work our way back to the beginning. so, there's 3 different timelines shown on the picture, but only one of them, the middle one, can actually be canonically achieved in the game they split from, ocarina of time, so we're going up the middle line. it's also the shortest span of time, so we're counting hyrule's years at a most generous minimum here.
so, there's an unknown amount of time between 10k years ago tears of the kingdom hyrule, and the last game on the middle line, four swords adventures. got no idea how much time is there but it's probably a lot, bc, again, civilization falling and rising again.
moving on, now when looking into this more, while again, I'm very rarely given explicit and specific time frames, there's generally supposed to be a few hundred years between four swords adventures and the previous game, twilight princess.
now, at twilight princess. as previously stated, that is the same ganon (this is also the first ganon to appear, all games chronologically prior to ocarina of time feature other villains) as the game before it, ocarina of time. (majora's mask, the game actually listed right before it on the timeline, is a direct sequel to ocarina of time and doesn't have significant bearing on this count) the lore of ocarina of time involves a lot of time travel, and in this center timeline, and the achievable canonical ending of the game, link defeats ganon and then goes back in time to warn the hyrule leaders, and ganon is stopped before he can ever get started. he's set to be executed, but evidently they don't succeed, because he's back at it again in twilight princess (I haven't played either of those games so I don't know the specifics) I don't know how long ganon's life expectancy is (clearly a lot though. he still looks like a middle aged man), but twilight princess has a new link and zelda, so assuming ocarina of time link lived a long and healthy life, it's probably been almost a century at minimum. this is also likely the closest gap between games.
now, from ocarina of time to the game before it. there is a vague "countless eras long" hyrulean civil war. so that's another couple hundred years between oot and four swords (different from four swords adventures)
now from four swords to the game prior, minish cap, is another vague and indeterminate amount of time, but it's for sure a new zelda and link, so that's probably over a hundred years again.
AGAIN with the unknown amount of time, we go back from minish cap to skyward sword. skyward sword is the first in the timeline, featuring the first link, the first zelda, and the earliest form of ganon, an evil god called demise who curses link and zelda to forever be reincarnated and to keep having to deal with his ass. now, skyward sword takes place in, the sky!!
the lore of this game is that, an unknown amount of time, long ago, demise cracked open the earth (already full of prospering people btw. no mention of a kingdom though. but keep that in mind. these weren't hyrulean cavemen these were societies) and monsters poured out, he was looking for the triforce, which was passed down from the golden goddesses (hyrule's creation gods) and protected by hylia, another goddess of the land, the triforce is capable of granting any wish to the person who has it. hylia took the triforce and sent it skyward on a piece of land (to be called skyloft) with the remaining surviving humans (hylians. despite the fact hylians are categorically an elven race, they are referred to interchangeably with the term human in the zelda games) hylia then took up forces with the remaining land dwellers (bc there are other races and they just got stuck on earth. fuck those guys ig) and they fought a vicious war that finally resulted in hylia sealing demise away. peace was restored to the surface, but the humans were left up in skyloft because she knew the seal wouldn't hold forever. hylia knew she wouldn't be able to defeat demise again without the help of the triforce, but a goddess can't use the triforce, so she gave up on immortality and was eventually reincarnated as a hylian. the first zelda. the first zelda is literally a direct reincarnation of a goddess. all future zeldas share her bloodline. (funny thing about this is you're never introduced to a hyrulean queen, there's only ever princess zelda and her father, despite the fact their divine right of kings follows a matrilineal line)
an unknown amount of time after the imprisoning war, we're at present day skyloft. they have little memory of the surface and the imprisoning war. og zelda ends up getting thrown down to the surface, where she discovers that she's a goddess incarnation and what her duty is. she's going to purify herself at springs and shit, while link follows trying to find her. there's a bunch of shit that happens while link follows her, eventually there's some time travel where he follows her back to when the goddess had first sealed away demise, zelda tells him she's a reincarnation, hylia intended for the triforce to be used by a chosen hero with an unbreakable spirit (link!!), she ends up getting sealed into a crystal so she can be awoken in her own time, the works. he goes back, does some other shit, part of skyloft breaks off and comes crashing down, and link and zelda decide to stay on the surface. hyrule as a kingdom is founded sometime between this game and the next.
so. to recap. the end of the timeline is already over 10k years removed from the last cycle. and then there's a couple hundred to a thousand years from THAT to ocarina of time, where the timeline splits. THEN there's another couple hundred to a thousand years from ocarina of time to skyward sword, the beginning of the cycle. and at the time of skyward sword, which is the prologue to the FOUNDING OF HYRULE. the land is already a few hundred years old ABSOLUTE MINIMUM. and had thriving and complex societies with technology BEFORE humans ever even got sent into the sky. all this together I'm estimating around 15k years of thriving society. at 15k years ago our earth had just started warming after about 100k years of ice age. and they already had technology. hyrule is an OLD ASS kingdom and all the intelligent civilizations on its land are even older. what the fuck

SonicAsura Doodles #60
Based on this idea.
Apparently October is the month to just torture any character with angst, tragedy, and hurt with a bare chance of comfort, aka Whumptober. Here's my take with the first Link I officially played as out of all the games: Spirit Tracks or Spirit.
Yeah. Spirit Tracks was my first Legend of Zelda Game that I funnily won with tickets at the prize section of Dave N Busters way back. Despite my hatred for the Ocean Temple specifically that one part with the boulder, I had a lot of fun. Plus I love it when Zelda isn't the helpless princess whose ass needs to be saved and actively helps.
Back on the topic at hand, I thought why not mess with this train conductor in the worst way possible? Welp, thank Madness Combat for this. In short, our Hero of Spirits gets yeeted out of his world at the end of Spirit Tracks. (RIP Zelda who was already traumatized considering what happens after the final boss is defeated.)
Stuck in unfamiliar territory, his gear displaced except for the whip and tons of enemies around Spirit is forced to hide. Hiding spot he picks being the worst place ever: a Magnification Chamber. You know the Super Soldier schtick often seen in media?
This is one of the worst options since it's fueled by crystalized Madness. (Don't know if it's as bad as LoZ's Malice but it's still very bad.) Thanks to faulty wiring the machine activates with poor Spirit inside. The Magnification Chamber is also the type of machine where bringing foreign objects with ya inside is BAD.
Thus our hero ends up having the whip merged with him as he's forcibly mutated. Normal MAGs are very aggressive, quite violent and usually need a handler to hold them back. However Spirit's mind and personality is kept mostly in tact takes to the blessing from the Triforce of Courage that every incarnation bears. Everything else had been altered.
Now Spirit is supposed to be 12-13 years old at the beginning of Spirit Tracks. Thanks to the Magnification however, he looks at least 17 or older standing around 12 ft. Baby boy got big. I'll be drawing an adult version later. Did I forget he's STUCK like this?
This Link doesn't have the Master Sword but the Lokomo Sword. Spirit does get his equipment back and can use the Spirit Flute still but it won't be able to restore his true form. He may have the Song of Healing but it isn't the same like Time's.
There are some perks to being a MAG such as enhanced strength, ridiculous pain tolerance, enhanced durability and acquiring light manipulation. Spirit will return to his world although there'll be a lot of obstacles thrown in his way.
His tail 'Whip' is fully sapient and a snarky smartass. Spirit often bickers with Whip on a weekly basis. Spirit's jaw can unhinge freely which makes his lethal bites even more dangerous. Green crystals grow around his shoulders and on Whip that can absorb any ambient light in a way similar to photosynthesis.
His face cheeks aren't what they seem to be. Spirit has an cracked mouth similar to a jack-o'-lantern but they close in a way to mimic said facial features. Most of his clothing had been improvised using both his conductor clothes and hat.
Will he interact with the Chain and other characters? Oh yeah.
That's all I have for now. Until next time folks, I'll see you back at Hyrule.

All right let's continue my original zelda story. Content warning for death and injury.
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 (Other posts are tagged #cotf)
Today we get to the midpoint of the game. You know how the formula for Zelda is usually "in order to get The Big Thing, get These Smaller Things, then once you get that Big Thing (sometimes the Master Sword) then go get more Small Things for the second Big Thing" and then fight the final boss? Oversimplifying it but yeah. One more round of dungeons after this and then the final fight.
So after the first round of dungeons (And plenty of development!) we head to get the Master Sword for reasons yet undefined. Ganon sent a minion in the form of a giant snake to guard the sword and keep it out of the heroes' hands, so that's who they have to fight to get the sword.
OH this is irrelevant to the current events but I forgot to explain their group dynamics. Working idea is that Link is the main controllable character and the other two (Shei and Stella) swap out to solve puzzles/do certain actions/story stuff etc. Because it's really freaking difficult to play a game where an npc follows you around all the time, Link carries Stella in a backpack (like just as a bag of bones) and in combat situations (where id imagine npc following would be the most tense) Shei gets all magicky and starts glowing and floating. Kinda like Zelda in Age of Calamity.
Tumblr media
.....Except, Shei doesn't have the best handle on his goddess powers, so he can't really control where he moves very well. In order to remedy this, Link has to lasso him and tow him around like the Triforce of Wisdom a balloon. Actually looking that over again it still seems kinda annoying so maybe that's an event specific thing instead of being present in every combat situation........hmm im rambling BUT the point is both Shei and Stella are present and active in fights.
SO back to the story they fight big evil snake and like close to the end SOMETHING happens (gonna shoot off ideas because im not sure what it should be yet) that gets Shei bitten by the evil snake. (Like. not the actual snake itself that one's huge like it splits into a bunch of smaller ones or spawns a bunch of little snakes) Some sort of event happens during the fight that should make that unavoidable but not feel like a punishment to the player, if that makes any sense? Like I don't want it to feel like you didn't beat the boss fast enough/well enough but I also don't want it to feel like it comes out of left field. I guess I want it to feel like it had to happen and there was nothing you could do?? (Like idk the floor gives out and trips Shei or at the end of one damage pattern it flies to the side and pins him down for a moment or something like that)
ANYWAY that was a lot of rambling obscuring a very important event SO-
You do manage to defeat the boss and reach the Master Sword, but just as Link pulls it Shei goes white and crumples (alternatively: gets a nosebleed), revealing the injury he sustained during the battle.
Impa, who accompanied them because she guided them to the Master Sword (Impa pops in and out of the action bc she has stuff to do elsewhere, also known as she shows up when its convenient), uses her Monocle of Truth (oh yeah I forgot to say she had that its like the lens of truth thats why shes wearing a monocle in the picrews) and determines that the venom of the snake is full of evil power and has no antidote.
They all panic. Shei doesn't want to die. He's not ready to accept any sort of future (throughout the story so far I want to imply that he's living in the present and doesn't like to think about what might happen in the future), especially not one where he dies.
✨Circumstances✨ come up that prevent them from leaving the area (monster resurgence, rubble blocking the exit, etc.), so they can't get help (still reworking those reasons). They can move him to a different clearing (this is a forest temple kind of place) where the sun is shining, the birds are singing, the wind is blowing, and it's all a contrast to what's happening.
Eventually they figure out all they can do is stay with him (😭 forgive me im still trying to give this moment the emotion it deserves and its Not Quite There yet so this is all you get sorry-). Remember this picture that I posted a while back? @acheronspride described it as cold, and that's exactly the vibe I'm going for.
So they sit around a tree and hold each other as the venom runs its course. It takes a long time (several hours) and during that time he gets increasingly dizzy/disoriented/sick/etc. (I wanted to avoid the "dying quickly but still has enough time to say important things" and "important things are said right before dying" tropes).
That's relevant because he does have something important to say. Remember the goddess-blood essence? If he dies as the last descendant of Hylia, her power and the legacy of every Princess Zelda will be lost forever. So he draws it out of himself, but he's not strong enough to hold onto it. The GBE splits into six pieces and scatters, and the piece of it that he DOES hold on to he bestows to Stella.
I think you can guess the reason for that! Sorry for cutting it off so soon, but I wanted to delay the next portion for later. Tell me what you think?

Lorepost: Chapter Fifteen, “Potentia”
By popular reader request, TTYE lore posts are companion pieces for each chapter of the story breaking down all of the Legend of Zelda lore and references made in each chapter, for readers looking to learn more about LoZ or just refresh their knowledge. This chapter contains explanations for: Guardian Scouts, the effects of the Fierce Deity’s Mask, the Nocturne of Shadow, the Mirror of Twilight, Anzu’s Sacrifice, and Eri’s Ineffective Path to Enlightenment.

Guardian Scouts
If anyone hasn’t played Breath of the Wild, or has and just avoids the Major Test of Strength shrines (legit), this video should give you a pretty good idea of what combat against a Guardian Scout looks like. Also a good view into the inside of a Combat Shrine, which is where the battle takes place. I think I’ve mentioned this in previous notes, but please note that in this story I’ve nerfed the Nerd Herd in comparison to Link - none of them are aspects of the Triforce of Courage, for one, and also no one is the Chosen Hero of the Sword. Link is well-known as an accomplished warrior and exceptional sword prodigy from the time he’s five years old. The gang are doing pretty well considering they crash-landed here a month ago, but not quite that well.

The effects of the Fierce Deity’s Mask
Worse yet was the pressure on the edges of his consciousness. Suddenly he became aware that his mind - his memories, thoughts, feelings, everything that made him Jounouchi - were all contained in a floating black void, one that he was now sharing with something else. Something large, and primal, and savage. It was whispering. Quietly at first, and then louder and louder in a language he didn’t know; the same words over and over again, swelling from a murmured chant to a screaming war cry, and the war cry grew so loud that Jounouchi felt that he’d never hear anything else again, his entire being was consumed with the vibrations of the harsh guttural words, he felt himself receding away in the face of them.
All of this is 100% stuff I created for the purposes of this story. The Fierce Deity’s Mask appears only in a very brief portion of one game, and is a complete mystery - you never learn about its background, where it comes from, or even what it really does other than making Link way more powerful.
I’ve extrapolated from a couple of factors. First off, when Link dons any of the transformation masks from Majora’s Mask (I couldn’t find a gif of the Fierce Deity transformation, but all of the transformations are quite similar) it looks extremely painful and terrifying.
Here he is putting on the Zora Mask:
Tumblr media
The other thing I’m extrapolating from is a tiny bit of flavour text from when you obtain the Fierce Deity’s Mask. This mask can also only be obtained near the end of the game by trading in a ton of other powerful masks. The conclusion I’ve drawn is that the Fierce Deity is an extremely powerful item in the context of the Zelda universe, but that it’s a dark power that is difficult to harness.
Tumblr media
As for the rest of Jounouchi’s vision while he wears the mask…there is, as usual, a method to my madness, but saying anything else would be a major endgame spoiler. :)

The Nocturne of Shadow
The Nocturne of Shadow (click here to listen) is a song played on the Ocarina to warp Link to the Shadow Temple, from the game Ocarina of Time. The image above is taken from this incredible video which has reconstructed some OoT areas with stunning graphics!!
Eri describes the Shadow Temple briefly in Chapter Four, The Place Between Light and Dark:
“Sheikah lore has always been kind of mysterious. They’re a tribe who historically serves the Royal Family as protectors, even being buried with them to watch over them in death. Impa has been reincarnated several times, always as Princess Zelda’s guardian.” Eri thought for a moment. “They have a Shadow Temple, but not in this world - in another one.”
“What’s the Shadow Temple like?” Yuugi asked. Eri frowned. “It’s not a good place. It was used for torture and from what I understand the Sheikah abandoned it a long time ago, and renounced everything it stood for.”

The Mirror of Twilight
This ancient artefact was used long ago to create portals to the Twilight Realm. At the events of Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Midna shattered the Mirror so that no one could pass freely between the two Realms. Warning…rly sad cutscene 😭
But now it looks like there is another way to create portals after all…

Anzu’s Sacrifice
This is an ability that I made up, but it’s based on two things: Healing Fairies, which heal Link and then vanish forever; and Mipha’s Grace, an ability imparted onto Link by his dear friend Mipha after her death that can bring him back to life if he falls in battle.

Eri’s Ineffective Path to Enlightenment
This is more a joke than lore, but usually when you enter a Shrine, you’ll find a preserved mummified monk at the back after you’ve completed the Shrine’s challenge. They stick around just long enough to impart rewards on Link, then they disintegrate. Link has already cleared the Tutsuwa Nima Shrine and the monk in it is gone, so Eri’s sitting on this empty platform doing her best monk impression.
