HOW am i supposed to be normal after THAT EPISODE. what the fuck. what the actual fuck. my brain is going insane with theming.
okay so, first off, jimmy didnt die first. he DIDNT. thats insanity in its own right. but the fact that the person who did go out first was lizzie.... his own seabling.... the person he brought down to red by accident... thats something.
lizzie died in the end, falling into the void. the watchers are associated with the end.
and jimmy died second, so soon after. like the universe course-corrected and took the canary down, clipped his wings after he had just started to fly. he still died early. the canary fell to the toxic gas of the mines once more.
for that reason im not going to stop the canary jimmy theming. its wonderful and i love it. but i do think that lizzie should get some too. why wouldnt a pair of siblings be the same species? im gonna draw them both as canary hybrids now.
jimmys death too.... he died to a warden. a WARDEN. need i remind everyone of double life, of the ranchers revenge. need i mention how this was the ONLY TIME tango has been absent from a session, and his rancher died to a mob hes known for wrangling.
speaking of tango. theres another point with him. remember jimmys insane level 4 decked out run? remember how he got his artifact and made it all the way out of level 3 before dying at the exit of level 2? the canary escaped the black mines alive, yet still died. black like coal. he broke his curse, escaped the coal mine, yet he still didnt make it.
and the FUNERAL. they held a fucking funeral for him, he didnt die first, but he still died the same episode. did the funeral trick the watchers into thinking he was already dead for just enough time for someone else to fall? is that what happened here?
it is also just. very funny to me that the first season jimmy isnt out first is the season after martyn canonized the curse.
in conclusion, im losing my mind. how is there so much theming in an unscripted series.

(This started out as rambling, turned into a fic prompt, then rambling again)
The Sheriff is the Codfather
This is mostly several headcanons of mine for this man finally coming together and creating this mess in my mind; ok this is based on the basis that nobody knows The Sheriffs name, and that he was wandering the masa before finding the hat he bases his whole identity on. And we know leaving the ocean causes memory loss (Jimmy and Lizzie not realizing that they’re basically Demigods and seablings) but we don’t know to what extent, like we know that they remembered their own names the first time but what about the second? And while Lizzie forgets almost immediately, we can see it’s because the ocean’s blessings are wearing off, and she got the blessings because of the orb, and the orb also gave her her axolotl-like form.
You know who didn’t get their orb? Jimmy! He could theoretically have lost his memory more slowly then his sister, slow enough to forget his name and not realize it. He could have also slowly turn more human-like as the years went by. Mind and body changing almost unrecognizable to the past, he finally grew stubble(ah yes the whole sea monster thing with smooth skin for scales to grow in)! Changed so much that he could find a hat and therefore his new identity so quickly. He’s The Sheriff. Him being anything else is inconceivable and blasphemy to the Law. He then changes to fit this role, he’s more strict, more aggressive, he tries to be more serious and respected, he’s less laid back. Now this isn’t to say he’s totally different, The Sheriff is still Jimmy even if he doesn’t know it.
But is he still the Codfather? No. He can’t be both. Then what’s with the title? Idk. But here’s where we take canon and put it in the blender because it’s time for a canon divergence! I haven’t watched the recent stuff because this has been distracting me from recent possibly headcanon breaking lore, so I’m going in blind. And I can’t write.
Now I heard somewhere that the hat got destroyed, and since I didn’t want to go through the trouble of removing the hat this is where we start off the divergence; the hat still gets destroyed just differently; The Sheriff somehow got blasted into a mangrove tree in the swamp, hit his head, fell into the water, accidentally killed a cod and got its head, and then drowned in the shallow part of the water. Everyone is confused, he should have died when he hit the tree, or at least broken his bones, but no, drowning killed him.
Anyway, people gather his stuff (including his destroyed hat and the cod head that someone accidentally put in) in a chest and wait for him to respond, but when he does he and everyone present (not much are) are confused, he’s quite, which isn’t weird for just respawning but it is weird when you look at his expression, he’s acting like he’s respawned in a room full of strangers, and then it hits, he must not have healed properly, which is a relief since he just needs to eat.
FWhip hands him his stuff, and instead of immediately grabbing his hat he grabs the head right next to it and wears that instead. People, of course, laugh, as it’s not everyday you wittiness someone you know experience respawn confusion, let alone that someone being The Sheriff. It’s funny until he says “Hi, I’m Jimmy, and you guys are?” No one speaks, in the 10-15 years he’s been The Sheriff, he has not once addressed himself differently, even jokingly, this feels invasive, like they found out something they shouldn’t have.
And that’s the end of my writing, but sometime after this Joel comes and they find out Jimmy doesn’t know about Toy Story, as that was a recent play and his mind is like decades into the past, and even if he did know he wouldn’t be as offended since he doesn’t see the resemblance “Woodys a sheriff” “Okay, and?” The rest of the rulers quickly find out something’s wrong, The Sheriff isn’t upholding the law like he use to and is actually acting like a political figure and is calling himself The Codfather, food did not help.
Everyone knows The Sheriff’s not in his right mind, only three people know his name(they’ve sworn themselves to secretcy, even though he’s ‘delirious’, there’s the slight chance that’s his real name and they don’t want to out him, he should tell them when he wants to, not because of some ‘glitch’), and Joel, Joel’s having a rough time. The whole ’toy’ thing started because Joel didn’t know what The Sheriff was, but he did know The Sheriff wasn’t fully mortal, and he didn’t like that, so he chose to believe The Sheriff was a toy, because the alternative was something Joel didn’t like thinking about because some stuff should stay in the past.
Jimmy has no idea what’s going on, like he still remembers his time as sheriff, but it’s been over shadowed by thousands years worth of memories returning all at once, and the fact that he’s pretty sure all his friends are reincarnated (that means that he’s sister is dead(or is she?)) and two are now gods. Shelby (Shrub?!) makes a potions to cure him by rewind, and now he no longer looks human and looks more like himself in season 1, Shelby doesn’t know what went wrong. Everyones freaking out and it’s chaos. Scott also found an orb,

it’s been a little while. but. I have more art!!
Tumblr media
I’ve been thinking about writing a team rancher’s fanfic for a long time now and since my current writing project is almost done I figured I’d finally work on character designs!
Tumblr media
also, here’s a grian to accompany the seablings! (next to an old drawing of him from June 2022)
i love them soooooo much like. i just spent ten minutes staring at lizzies freckles (fantastic touch im obsessed) and then got trapped for another five on the way u did the eyes (the highlights are so good. i don't have specific enough words to properly express myself but. they look so real while also fitting your style so well? love em) and then jimmy looks SO FOND and i love his messy hair its so organic like honestly that is my new favourite image ty so much for sending me it It is v cool seeing how u've grown as an artist between the two grians like. they were def drawn in around the same style by the same person but the second one feels much more confident if that makes sense? idk but i love it also very much.

Id like to know more cod father opinions do the empires have different widely excepted interpretations among the citizens what is the worst possible way they have told his story and what is the most generous conclusion some one has come to How are the other empires remembered what does jimmy think of the more sympathetic artist or writers Is Jimmy the only one to be seen as a villain or are there other cases of historical misinformation does Jimmy know how Joel died or did he leave before that
Also, in the comments of Part 8 on Ao3, Efield commented this:
"I would like to know more about depictions of the cod father do the different empires have different widely excepted interpretations among the citizens What is the worst possible way they have written his story and what is the most generous possible conclusion some one that didn’t meet him would come to with the knowledge available What do they think of Lizzie if they remember her well then would art of them would focus on the stereotype of good and evil twins or seablings How do they remember the other emperors what does jimmy think of them Would he find some funny I love works that shows how history remembers season 1 emperor’s Was jimmy the only one to be painted as a villain or where there other cases of historical misinformation Is Jimmy a good house guest to Joel does he get along with Hermes"
I have taken both of these as an excuse to write a lot, so here you go!
Now do keep in mind, I know very little about art history except what is taught in basic K-12 schooling. A lot of my theory probably doesn’t make much practical sense. But this is for fun so that’s okay!
In this au, the setting of Empires S2 is a different continent than Empires S1. After the Rapture, many people were killed or displaced from the S1 continent. 1,000 years later during the time of S2, the S1 continent has become habitable and is fully populated. A few S2 members are from the S1 continent, such as Shelby and Pix! All this to say, the historical opinion of the Codfather isn’t local to S2’s nations and probably has a pretty homogeneous perspective from those who live on the S1 continent (which I have been calling the Ruined/Old Continent.) That’s not to say there isn’t some variation that exists!
First of all, there is obviously the one explored in this fic. The general perspective of the Codfather seen by most is “Technically we can’t prove he caused the Rapture, but it’s definitely the most likely outcome so he might as well have done it.” Whatever S1 cultures survived the disaster and the 1,000 years of time probably have changed a lot. They have no connection to the Cod Empire anymore, no reference to its morals or reputation outside of historical accounts. Also, the inhabitants of the Cod and Ocean empires are literally fish and amphibians in this au, and their whole deal is that they only formed civilizations due to the influence of 2 demigods (kinda like in Hollow Knight if you know the lore behind that) so they’re not around to give their side of the story. The various ravines and craters dotting the Old Continent, reminding those who see them of its terrible past, probably doesn’t do much for the cultural conscious as well.
Another perspective is that of Pirate Cove, or more specifically by sailors! I talk about it in this post, but generally it focuses more on the seablings as ocean gods than as historical figures.
There are a few other ideas I have. Maybe Animalia has a different perspective on the Ocean Gods, revering them more as gods of Fish and Amphibians then of water? Also, the art museum referenced a few times: Azelo City is meant to be located in modern day Mezalea. A lot of fan interpretation pictures Mezalea as the arts capital of S1, mostly due to the bright colors and the idea of Joel sculpting clones. I think this culture would have withstood time, so that area might interact with the history of the Codfather more through art, prose, and philosophy more so than anything else.
Some of the above applies for Lizzie too, mostly the sailor lore. I think she is seen as the older and wiser of the two (Older? Yes. Wiser? …they’re both kinda silly lets be honest.) If the Codfather facing upwards represents youth and optimism, the Ocean Queen facing downwards represents wisdom and protection. She is said to be both terrifying and devoted. Maybe nowadays young lovers call their partner their “Ocean Queen” to show their love. It's a little ironic like someone calling you the Juliet to their Romeo, lol.
Jimmy, at this point of the au, probably doesn't agree with the more sympathetic interpretations of him. Even if The Rapture wasn't his fault, he doesn't have very high opinions of himself as a leader. So what does it matter that history sees him as a villain, it's probably deserved. I also don't think Jimmy knows how Joel died, he left before that. We also don't have a time frame for when Joel specifically died. I like the interpretation that he lived past the rapture for a few years before the grief finally caught up to him. (Ironically, by running away to the ocean depths, this is exactly what Jimmy was trying to avoid.)
Maybe I’ll get to some of the other S1 emperors and their legacies another time, as I don’t have many great ideas for most of them. Also most aren’t relevant to this au. Feel free to come to your own conclusions or suggest some!
Also, I have another ask about Hermes and already had sketches in the work before they were asked. The lad is of great importance to me too don’t worry :D

Responsibility AU 13 Years Later...
So I was heavily inspired by @shyrose57 's Responsibility AU and all of the fun shenanigans that all these characters get up to that I decided to write a little "where are they now" that takes place about 13 years later. (Also as a note I have had a LOT of these headcanons for awhile before some lore was written (like Canon Seablings) so some things were minorly edited to make things fit (also also this is really long so read more below if you wanna!)
We'll start with the Wither Rose Trio, as they have the most moving to do of all the kids.
At the age of 14 or 15, Gem was accepted to a Wizard School located in the Crystal Cliffs, a magic-based empire society. The strongest wizard would be appointed to be the new leader and, supposedly, Gem was being considered for how powerful she was with little to no training.
At first, she was only gone for a couple days at a time. But days turned to weeks, and weeks to full on months, until her siblings and friends had to visit her because of how busy she was. It got to the point that her baby dragon became a glorified pigeon at some point to keep up communication when she was too tired to cast magic. Gem spent the next several years training under powerful wizard after powerful wizard until she was deemed apprentice of the current Head Wizard. Under their watchful gaze, she grew to even surpass him.
With the Head Wizards' untimely passing, she was crowned the new leader, helping train new hopeful wizards that hope to one day follow in her footsteps. The Crystal Cliffs also, under her rule, became the host to dragons yearly, so her dragon could welcome other dragons and see more of its own kind. Secretly, though, she really misses her family. And she always tries to find micro excuses to see them. Afterall, what is she without her siblings?
Next is fWhip. When Gem went off to school, he found himself alone and not really sure what to do. Xornoth tried their best to distract him, but he was a twin without his other half. Directionless.
One day, he stumbled across an old torn down ruins of a town, the collateral damage of one of history's wars. A sign laying in the mud read the words, "Eastvale", and he remembered it briefly from one of the few times Xornoth had gotten him to sit down for a history tutoring lesson. As he looked around, he noticed that most of the buildings were in ruins, and yet a small settlement of people still resided in the town, unable to leave.
Over the next several years, he took this old, ruined town and turned it into a thriving metropolis with emphasis on creation and innovation in redstone contraptions. He found ways to over farm gunpowder for the explosives that the newly rebranded Grimlands were now exporting, and found himself as a natural born leader. Over time, the Grimlands filled with more people, and was deemed as an Empire in the eyes of the other rulers (and it definitely wasn't because a certain demon threatened war if not).
FWhip still finds time to see and welcome all of his siblings and friends, though he especially loves that Gem is just one quick flight away, as he spends a lot of time harassing his twin as he once did.
To round out the Witherfam, Mythical Sausage takes center stage. The youngest of his siblings (well, minus Shrub), Sausage found himself watching his siblings with a little bit of jealousy. He wanted magic like Gem, he wanted a project like the Grimlands. He wanted Jimmy to be HIS best friend, not Scott's.
And so, when he one day stumbled across the Mythland Ruins right next to the a new land called the Cod Empire and discovered the Staff of Mythland, well, he got to work.
Sausage worked tirelessly, building an entire Empire from the ground up (with Xornoth's help, of course). He spent hours building, using the staff to slow down time as needed, and Xornoth to help him move faster. He found an old, abandoned church that worshipped these "blood sheep" and decided, "yes, I WILL make that my entire personality, thank you very much!" He rebuilt the church and, over time, people found themselves moving into this new Empire, drawn in by the young king (and definitely not the blood magic). He also starts an Assassin's Guild but he would never tell Xornoth (it's fine, the demon already knows).
Sausage finds himself constantly flying and vying for his siblings' approval. He's boastful and loud, always showing off his new shiny Empire. He also created a mini war with Jimmy once a certain stolen music disc got involved, but Xornoth intervened once a crater was blown to bedrock and Scott got temperamental, but that's just normal behavior for the young king.
Now that Witherfam is finished, I think it's time we focus on the 3 remaining siblings: Shrub, Scott, and Xornoth.
Xornoth remained as leader of Rivendell until Scott turned about 19, finally feeling ready to lead. In their time as leader, however, Xornoth worked to help their younger siblings in their empire building endeavors. They'd help tutor Gem while she was around, teaching her little magic tricks to cut corners on some spells. For fWhip, they'd help gather resources and help teach him how to not blow up redstone machines. And for Sausage, it was all about helping him speed through the building process and keeping him safe from the things that lurk in the Dark Forest.
However, once Scott took over, they took more of an advisor role and had more freedom to do as they pleased. They continued to help fWhip and Sausage, as their empires were still in some form of rudimentary building phases, and they spent a lot of time with Shrub as she continued to grow. But since they were no longer leader, they had more time to go around and cause some of the shenanigans that they hadn't been able to before. They finally understood why their younger siblings loved to torment Jimmy so much.
Overall, the former demon found themself enjoying some of the lighthearted shenanigans that he didn't feel like they could before. They are always there when their siblings or honorary siblings need them, though. They wouldn't say it outloud, but a part of them fears for the day that these kids go into full blown war. They know its unlikely, considering how close they all are, but they still fear the day that they'll have to pick a side or break apart a war. For now, though, they enjoy the peace.
As for Scott, he enjoyed his time getting to rely on someone else and hold his boyfriends hand when he thought no one was watching (spoiler: everyone saw it). But there comes a day where responsibilities will catch up to you. It happened to Xornoth way back when little Shrub decided to follow behind a scary demon, and, eventually, it caught up with Scott.
But he was ready this time, his brother made sure of it. Scott took over as leader at 19, and no one could argue that he was, surprisingly, a natural at it once given the proper tools to lead. Xornoth remained as his right hand man, always on call should he be needed. In his spare time, Scott worked on bringing warmth to the cold mountains in building the greenhouse and bringing in bees. He also built a little cave in the side of a mountain, but only he and Jimmy know it's exact location.
It doesn't help that, sometimes, that overwhelming feeling from when he was 13 in charge of a crumbling nation creeps in. He feels fear that it will all crumble around him again. On those days, Xornoth sends him to go spend time in the new Cod Empire with his boyfriend, or to Katherine to relax and make flower crowns. After a couple days, he's good to go once more, thankful that his brother stepped in to help. As of recent, rumors have floated around about a royal engagement between the King of Rivendell and a certain fish boy, but, well, they haven't said anything… yet.
And, to round out the Demon Siblings, Shrub! Our favorite, tiny toddler gnome grew up. She became a thousand times more talkative once she hit around 8-9, and with that talkative spirit came a deviousness. She often pranked her siblings and friends, although all it would take to get her to back off was a threat to throw her in the water (as no one bothered to try to teach her to swim).
Around the age of 12, she stumbled upon a small grove with large mushrooms and tree stumps. She had been lead there by her steadily growing pack of wolves. In the grove, her pack is swarmed by a zombie hoard. She, along with the wolves, manage to fend them off, but one of them, Lord of Mars, is gravely injured. Xornoth, who was alerted to the fight by their demon sense, shows up just in time to see the spirit of Lord of Mars merge with their tiny gnome sister. They go into a protective sibling mood and try to find out if anything is wrong. It turns out, this merging of spirits lead Shrub to unlocking spirit powers. Shrub affectionately calls her new "alter ego" the Wolf Spirit and promises to become a vigilante like the Phantom Assassin much to Xornoth's annoyance and horror.
While currently (as of 13 years later), Shrub isn't quite old enough to be a ruler, she has been working with Xornoth to rebuild the newly named Undergrove. They helped carve out the tunnels and build structures as she needed. Meanwhile, she found ways to make wooden carvings and imbue them with the souls of the forest, creating villagers as well as golems to protect them. She finds herself to be good friends with Katherine, both of them bonding over their love of nature.
With the big 6 out of the way, I figured it be best to talk about our other favorite siblings, as well as Joel since why not?
Jimmy and Lizzie were both in line to be the sole Ruler of the Ocean Empire. A competition was being discussed amongst their guardians to see who would take over the Empire, and who would be sent off on their own. It wasn't fair, but the Ocean Empire was meant for one ruler, and there was never meant to be two heirs. But they both survived hatching all those hundreds of years ago, as well as growing and developing a human form and, well, what else could their people do? Eventually one would be, well, not exiled, but made to live somewhere else.
About a week before the tourney, Jimmy backed out entirely and moved without a word. The people were confused, and rumors spread that he had possibly been killed in an incident. No one knew where he went until one day it was discovered that a small subsection of the Ocean Empire that bordered and crossed over to the land was split from the rest of the Empire and formed into a new much smaller faction: the Codlands, headed by a faceless monarch who publicly only wore a cod head. And the rumors spread, rumors that this was the runaway Prince, but, as of now, it has never been confirmed one way or the other.
As ruler of the Codlands, Jimmy built it up from disrepair. As the sector had been mostly on land, it had gone to the wayside. He kept a close friendship with his sister and other rulers, all of them who knew who he was, truly, and they all kept it a secret if only because they didn't want to cause a political scandal within the Ocean Empire.
Overall, Jimmy enjoys his time in the Codlands, even if he misses the Prisma Palace sometimes. Jimmy found it quite funny, seeing the other rulers react to his "disappearance", especially with how dramatic Scott was publically. The Rivendell King even pretended to hate the Codfather persona until the two started to, once again, publically date. The two also recently got engaged but are holding off saying anything outside of the friend groups and family because, well, its nice to have something that isn't known by everyone.
As for Lizzie, well, she became a graceful leader of the Ocean Empire. She was a natural born leader, bringing a sense of prosperity to the ocean. Publically, she mourned the loss of a brother, leading countless goose chases for someone who was in hiding, and she knew where. But she couldn't say. But privately, she found time to visit her brother and sneak him home whenever she could. Once his persona was announced, she created an alliance within the first 24 hours.
Meanwhile, her relationship with the now crowned King of Mezalea blossomed into the world's most public courtship. It was hard to find time to just exist and be alone now that they were adults, but they were still just as in love. A royal engagement followed within the year they were both crowned rulers, a big, grandiose wedding held in the newly recognized Empire known as Mythland. The Church was… well, it was something, but Sausage was excited! So of course they held it there. And it was a lovely ceremony. Some even say that a certain demon was crying, but, well, they would never fess up to it. It's okay, though, everyone that was there knows the truth, and Xornoth's siblings love to tease them about it.
And finally in this trio, Joel! Lovely murderous Joel. His hatred of horses and chickens haven't quelled in recent years, though he's less inclined to go hunting for horses and only kills them if he sees them. As a young teen, he was fond of building. As an adult, his buildings escalated to the creation of the Mezalean Matral Palace, a project that is currently being built by the King.
When it came to proposing to Lizzie, well, it was a very public affair. He arranged a lovely boat ride around the Ocean Empire and the shore of Mezalea. The two watched the sunset, and it was there that he proposed. Of course she said yes, and the two planned a lovely wedding. If asked whether Xornoth was there, Joel always says, "No, of course not. The demon man doesn't even exist. Who are you talking about?" This comes to the annoyance of everyone, but, well, they can't chastise him for his joking manner.
He creates alliances with the other Empires based on how he perceives them to treat the Codfather persona publically. It's because of this that he publically made a diss track against fWhip and nearly declared war against Sausage, but luckily the situations were handled privately and in a very jokey manner, but Xornoth wouldn't lie by saying it helped their anxiety.
Now we just have 4 empires left, and so I'mma just go based on what I've got. It's not as much as some of thebothers but, well, they're all pretty cool and deserve a spotlight in the AU "wrap up".
Pixlriffs was the first of all of Xornoth's siblings and adopted siblings to ascend the throne. The old king had passed prematurely, and he had to witness it around the company of friends. He was practically crowded once he came out of the vision, saying a quiet resignation that he was going to be King.
Pixandrian society is a theocracy, and his prophet abilities put him into a position of power at a young age. The day of the coronation found the city bustling with activity, the area around the Vigil roped off. Pixl was surrounded by friends the entire day. And they all watched as the young king carried an undyed candle to the Vigil, setting the candle in the spot of the former ruler. The rest of the day was spent in celebration, the celebration of a life since past, and in celebration of the new administration that was starting. But no amount of celebration could shake the nerves.
Pixlriffs was a kind ruler, spending his time with his people and helping bring excitement to the lands. As every new ruler took the throne, he replaced the candles and lanterns around the Vigil to a single candle. He worked to create innovative ways to bring copper, Pixandria's main export, to the other empires. He still found time to go to Rivendell and sit in the expansive library just to read for hours. He also finds time to pull elaborate redstone pranks with fWhip or Jimmy, depending on who was available that day.
As for Katherine, well, she became a social butterfly once she became ruler. Her friendly demeanor lead her to having the best relationship with all the other rulers, if only because she never got involved in conflict. She was a confidant to the rulers when they were angry or frustrated, always managing to talk things down from an all out war. She was the main reason that Sausage and Jimmy's music disc altercation never went past the ravine that was blown to bedrock.
Beyond her relations to the other Empires, she worked on another project, just on the outskirts of the Overgrown. The project was dubbed "Baby Town", which consisted of smaller buildings that were indicative of the different empires that inspired them. This brought tourism to the Empire, which in turn helped bring awareness to the work of the Overgrown and it's efforts to preserve the natural habitat.
Alongside Baby Town, she started a small side business with Scott one of the times he came to visit her when he needed a break from being King. The created a plushie business because the two were currently swimming in mob heads. And hey, listen, Katherine really LOVES her mob heads, but there were so many! And so they got into the plushy business, selling them in Baby Town for a profit. Xornoth couldn't be prouder, if only a little concerned about the amount of heads that two had amassed.
Pearl's interesting in how she's one of the few leaders who took the throne because her parents stepped down, rather than some kind of death or forced prophetic powers that made her the next ruler. Her parents just saw how strong willed she was, and how she was willing to go toe-to-toe with a LITERAL DEMON and thought, "yeah, she's exactly what the Smallholding needs right now". They of course waited for her to be ready for leadership, but they stepped aside to let her shine as the natural leader she is, offering a helping hand when needed.
When Sausage settled nearby in the Mythland ruins, the two set out to create the Arena so that Pearl had better ways to deal with her natural tendencies to want to fight the biggest threat in the room. People would come from everywhere to watch her fights. Newbies would always bet against her because there's no way the girl with sunflowers woven into her hair could ever beat a giant Ravager and- what do you mean she oneshot the gigantic Beast?
Overall, she finds a strong kinship with the Witherfam, joking that she's their long lost older sister. She often joins in on their shenanigans, and, of course, always tries to fight Xornoth. With age, she's gotten craftier in hiding and planning sneak attacks. But their demon sense always keeps them on alert, ready for the next potential attack.
And finally, our dearly beloved Joey. With time, his playful, young "crush" on Xornoth faded into the wayside, turning to admiration to a simple respect for the work that the demon had accomplished in his time as ruler. He spent a lot of time with the demon, taking notes on how to repair some of the structures of the Lost Empire while still preserving their natural and historical feeling.
One of his closest friendships early on came through the young Shubble as she would often tail along with Xornoth as the demon tried to help Joey with some of his projects. While exploring the wilds of the jungle, the three found a raptor egg, which was nurtured until it hatched and, well, that's how Joey got a raptor!
He never has a corruption arc like in canon which leads to Joey finding new hobbies. He helps Sausage with his Assassin's Guild in a scheme to help hike up the sales of Totems of Undying. Xornoth almost respects the hustle. Almost. But their older sibling energy makes them want to scorn the two but, well, it is a little bit funny.

Katherine was extremely serious about the “no weapons” thing. Not a single tool was allowed, not even shovels or hoes. She had everyone place their weapons and tools in specifically marked chests, assuring each of them that they could get them back after the meeting, and that her iron golems would protect them from any threats if they were to arise. Besides, the chests were just at the entrance of her castle, visible from the meeting table. They could easily rush to their weapons if need be. It didn’t mean anyone was less jumpy about it, though. And Jimmy was particularly antsy- Fwhip was practically glowering at the table, and while Sausage looked outwardly cheerful, there was an edge to every word he spoke. Jimmy couldn’t fight the paranoia that one or both of them had snuck weapons to the meeting, and was just waiting for the right moment to strike.
And then there was Scott. There wasn’t anything outwardly shifty about the winged elf, but… there was definitely… something. Jimmy wasn’t sure what it was, but he couldn’t keep his eyes off Scott. He was perfectly poised, as always, every hair in place and wings mantled. There was something elegant and serene about Scott as he listened to Katherine speak with a gentle smile. His gaze was focused on her, and Jimmy tried to search those icy blue eyes for any hint of malice. He found nothing but kindness, and that was what worried him. Surely Scott should be up to something… right? He had seemed so hostile the other day, but then they both apologized to each other… maybe he had nothing to worry about. But then there was that strange, soft yet calculating look he had given Jimmy, like he could finally start seeing the complete picture a puzzle would make. Was that something bad?
Jimmy’s thoughts were interrupted by Scott’s eyes suddenly meeting his, one eyebrow raised. Jimmy tried his best not to jump as he quickly looked away, focusing on Katherine. He could still feel Scott’s eyes on him, and absurdly, Jimmy felt like he was melting. Figures that Scott would have secret laser eyes or something. He wouldn’t even need a weapon, that was his plan all along. Surely that’s why Jimmy felt like he was going to implode, he definitely wasn’t embarrassed. Definitely. Thankfully, Scott’s eyes shifted away as Katherine spoke again.
“Now, there is one very important thing I wanted to discuss at this meeting. I don’t know if any of you have heard, but there are some new empires rising up. I think we should do our best to welcome the new rulers,” Katherine said. For the first time in the whole meeting, Fwhip looked interested. Somehow that scared Jimmy more than when he was grumpy and despondent.
“What would you suggest?” Fwhip asked, voice smooth and suspiciously charming. Jimmy didn’t like his tone one bit, but Katherine seemed to fall for it, beaming at Fwhip’s sudden interest.
“I would like to hold the first ever House Blossom Ball. All rulers will be invited, and it will be held in honor of the two new empires in our lands,” she explained.
“Oh that sounds wonderful!” Gem exclaimed, and excited murmurs of agreement circled through the room. But Jimmy felt uneasy. He did like the idea of a ball, dancing and dressing up fancy with friends sounded fun! But Fwhip’s excitement didn’t sit quite right with him, and there was the other issue of the two new empires. How did they know they could really trust them? Establishing a good relationship was important, yes, but was inviting them in so openly the best idea? Jimmy had tried being so open before, but look where that got him. A war over a disc, and a ravine on the outskirts of his empire. And now whatever was happening between him and Scott. Then suddenly, as if just thinking of him prompted him to speak, Scott brought up one of the very things that Jimmy was worried about.
“What do we know about these empires? Do you think we can trust them?” he asked. The excited murmurs stopped, something uneasy settling in the air instead. Katherine faltered for a moment, but kept her head high.
“The House Blossom Ball will hold the same rule as our meetings now do: no weapons. So unwarranted attacks will not be an issue. And not a lot is known about the other empires… they are just starting out, after all. One of them is in the jungle, and his empire can only be found if you are lost. The other empire seems to have sprouted up from nowhere, but its ruler has come a long way to settle here. In a way, both are lost. As the ten ruling powers in this land, I think it is our duty to welcome them so that they won’t have to be lost anymore,” Katherine said firmly.
“Poetic,” Fwhip said, voice a little overly saccharine for Jimmy’s liking. Katherine seemed a little put off by his tone as well, but didn’t comment on it. A determined frown came to Jimmy’s face. His skepticism be damned, he was going to support Katherine. He turned to her and smiled, reaching out to gently clasp Katherine’s hand, not unlike how she had after the last meeting.
“I agree with you, Katherine. Let’s help them be found,” Jimmy said softly, giving her hand a light squeeze before letting go. Katherine smiled at the touch, seeming grateful that Jimmy backed her up.
“Can’t believe I’m saying this, but I agree with Jimmy,” Scott said dryly. Jimmy looked to Scott in surprise, expecting more of a fight, some clever retort or thought-out reason for why the ball couldn’t happen.
“Thank you, Scott,” Jimmy said, unable to keep a small smile off of his face. Scott’s nose scrunched up in irritation- and yup, there was the Scott he knew. Always looking at Jimmy with disdain or irritation.
“I was more supporting Katherine here than anything else,” Scott pointed out with a huff.
“But you specifically mentioned me…” Jimmy trailed off with a teasing grin. Scott’s cheeks tinted pink, just ever so slightly- but he still glared at Jimmy in frustration.
“Shut up,” he muttered. Jimmy grinned wider.
“Make me,” he teased, parroting Scott’s words from the last meeting. Sausage gasped, excitedly tapping Pearl’s arm as she shushed him and muttered something about how we had talked about this, Sausage.
“Well… we definitely have two supporters of the ball, any other thoughts?” Katherine asked, not-so-subtly changing the subject.
“I am absolutely in support, it sounds fun!” Gem replied, elbowing Fwhip. He jumped, and nodded in agreement.
“If Scott and Jimmy are going to be there, I definitely want to see what goes down,” Sausage chimed in with a grin. Scott and Jimmy both made an offended sound, but Pearl spoke up before either of them could say anything.
“And it’s a good diplomatic foot forward with the two new empires, Sausage. I think the ball is a lovely idea, Katherine,” Pearl said, offering an apologetic smile to both Scott and Jimmy for Sausage’s comment.
“I’m in too! I’d love a chance to dress all fancy and dance with Joel,” Lizzie added, linking arms with Joel and gazing up at him with a charming smile. Joel blushed a bit, and nodded his agreement as well.
“Well, since it seems like everyone else is going to this dance, guess I’d better show up too,” Pixl said with a nonchalant shrug and a grin. Katherine clapped her hands in excitement.
“Oh wonderful! I think I’ll cut this meeting short then, I have a lot of preparations to take care of, and I will send out the invitations soon!” Katherine said, rising from the table. The other rulers followed her lead, each of them bidding her goodbye before they went to their respective chests to retrieve their weapons and tools.
“I look forward to the ball, Katherine. I’m sure it’ll be a blast,” Fwhip said with a bow of his head and a cocky grin. Katherine beamed in response.
“Thank you! I’m glad to see you’re excited!” she replied, bowing her head to Fwhip as well. Jimmy still wasn’t sure how he felt about Fwhip’s sudden interest at the meeting… but then again Fwhip was only really Jimmy’s enemy. He and Katherine were on good terms, after all. He should trust Katherine’s judgement, even if he didn’t like Fwhip. He did, however, wait until Fwhip left to walk up to Katherine and bid her goodbye.
“See you later, Katherine! I’m excited for the ball, I’m sure with you in charge it will go great!” he said with a grin. Katherine laughed, blushing slightly.
“Aw, thanks Jimmy! And who knows, maybe the ball will not only forge new alliances with the new empires, but will strengthen or fix the bonds of the current ones,” Katherine said, glancing pointedly at Scott, whose back was to them as he looked over his weapons, before she looked back at Jimmy. She smiled not-so-innocently, and Jimmy’s face flushed in embarrassment.
“I- well, I dunno about that. But… maybe. Today’s meeting didn’t go too bad, right?” Jimmy asked with a hopeful smile. Katherine giggled.
“Right! You guys are really turning a corner here, I can feel it!” she chirped. Jimmy laughed, shaking his head.
“Whatever you say, Katherine. I’ll be off now,” Jimmy said, bowing his head.
“Bye!” Katherine replied, bowing her head too and offering a little wave as Jimmy left. He waved back, and was still smiling to himself as he met Joel and Lizzie outside. The two of them had their elytra on, and there was a smug grin on Lizzie’s face that Jimmy didn’t like one bit.
“What’s that smile for?” Jimmy asked with a laugh as he equipped his elytra.
“Oh, I was just thinking about how you couldn’t contribute anything to the first half of the meeting because you were making eyes at a certain elf,” Lizzie said with a teasing lilt.
“I wasn’t ‘making eyes,’ I was making sure that he wasn’t up to anything!” Jimmy spluttered.
“Sure you were,” Lizzie crooned, taking off before Jimmy got a chance to respond. Joel sighed, smiling sympathetically at him before following after Lizzie. Jimmy took off too, the conversation far from over, in his opinion.
-
Jimmy wasn’t quite fast enough to keep up with Lizzie, but she and Joel waited for him on the dock outside of his house. The three of them had often hung out and chatted on the dock, long before Joel and Lizzie had gotten married or even began courting. Their empires had been much smaller then, but the bond between the three of them hadn’t changed. Which was why Jimmy was (affectionately) furious with Lizzie for implying something about himself and Scott. He sat down beside her, feet dangling over the water.
“Explain yourself, right now,” Jimmy huffed, trying to put on an angry act but couldn’t really keep it up with Lizzie. She smiled far too innocently at him, and okay. Maybe he could manage a frustrated expression pointed at her.
“I mean, she’s got a point. Plus I heard about that uh- scuffle, you two had,” Joel said, a mischievous glint in his eyes as he leaned forward to look past Lizzie at Jimmy.
“Ooh yeah, Katherine did tell us about that. You’d better watch out for those land boys, Jimmy. They’re trouble,” Lizzie said with a mock-concerned tone, but her playful grin gave her away. Joel shifted to look at Lizzie with an offended noise.
“Babe, I’m right here,” he said, near pouting.
“I know what I said. You’re trouble, King of Mezalea,” Lizzie teased.
“Like you’re any better, Ocean Queen,” Joel replied with a laugh. Lizzie giggled, playfully swatting at Joel's arm.
"You may be right, but this is about Jimmy’s troublesome land boy," Lizzie pointed out as she turned back to Jimmy.
"He's not my land boy!" he protested, face heating up slightly.
"Aww, that blush says otherwise!" Lizzie teased.
“He could be your land boy if you weren’t so busy trying to kill each other,” Joel chimed in.
“That’s exactly why he’s never gonna be ‘mine,’ he hates me, and I hate him! There’s nothing else going on!” Jimmy protested.
“Are you sure you two hate each other? You seemed pretty friendly at the meeting today,” Joel pointed out, voice a bit more gentle than the teasing tone it had been before. Jimmy sighed.
“That’s only cause Katherine insisted on us apologizing to each other when we uh. Fought. We’re only playing nice for Katherine’s sake,” Jimmy said sheepishly.
“Uh huh. Or you’re playing nice because you think Scott is pretty,” Lizzie teased, elbowing Jimmy playfully.
“I don’t think he’s pretty! I- I mean objectively he looks nice I guess but it’s more irritating than anything! How can a guy be so perfectly poised and elegant all the time, it’s annoying!” Jimmy spluttered. Joel and Lizzie exchanged amused, bewildered looks before looking back at Jimmy.
“Wow, you really do have it bad for him, huh,” Joel commented with a disbelieving laugh. Jimmy made an offended sound, opening his mouth to retort but was halted by Lizzie patting his arm comfortingly.
“It’s okay Jimmy, I’m sure Scott will come around and see what a sweet swamp boy you are,” she crooned, Jimmy flushing at the childhood nickname Lizzie always used for him.
“You two are impossible, nothing’s going to happen between us! And I’d prefer it that way!” Jimmy shot back with a frown.
“Methinks the cod boy protests too much,” Joel said dryly.
“I’m the Codfather, thank you very much,” Jimmy huffed.
“Hey, maybe if things work out really well, you’ll be a Codhusband,” Lizzie replied with a sly grin. Jimmy buried his face in his hands, trying to hide how bright red he was.
“Stop iiiit,” he whined. Lizzie only laughed, but threw an arm around his shoulders to give a small hug in apology. Joel reached around Lizzie to pat Jimmy’s back, and despite the teasing he had endured from them, Jimmy felt pleasantly warm and comforted all the same. Although to be fair, Joel and Lizzie always playfully teased him. But it would often end like this, the three of them nestled close together on the edge of the dock, watching the sun set over the water.

Fic below the cut
Jimmy was a pretty normal guy. I mean he was the leader of an empire but compared to the other leaders and even his own citizens he was normal, maybe even average. Just a pretty basic dude. But Jimmy had something, a part of him, that was very not normal. It was a ribbon tied around his left wrist. It was green and blue with a design of red flowers that Jimmy had never seen before. The ribbon had one end constantly trailing out of sight. It had been there for as long as he could remember and strangely enough, seemingly no-one else could see it.
When Jimmy was little he tried out some tests with the ribbon. He found out that he couldn’t tangle it, he couldn’t trip people with it, he couldn’t hang things on it, it didn’t interact with water like most fabrics did, it was just intangible to anyone or anything but Jimmy. He’d told his sister Lizzie about it but she didn’t have one and she couldn’t see or feel it. He’d even gone to the local library to do research on it which did make the bookkeeper give him a strange look, he’d never been one for academics before but he just needed to know. He found nothing but some sappy love stories about people with invisible red strings of fate that connected them to their one true love. Jimmy didn’t really believe these stories, besides he had a ribbon not a string.
Once or twice in his life Jimmy had felt a tug on the ribbon. It felt like a person on the other end of it had pulled on it. Was there someone also connected to him? Were those stories about strings of fate true? Jimmy followed the ribbon for a long time, only stopping when he realized that he was at the edge of the kingdom. If there was a person on the other end, they weren’t from his home empire.
For a while that was it. Nothing new could be found out about the ribbon and so Jimmy resigned himself to it just being a mystery forever. On the plus side, he didn’t really mind it that much. It didn’t hurt him or get stuck on anything which was nice and it was a nice texture. Sometimes when he was anxious or just restless he would twist it between his fingers and fidget with it. He got some strange looks, fidgeting with nothing, but it wasn’t that weird so no-one really questioned him.
Everything was normal with it until the day he met the other rulers. It was a political meeting of nations, the first time all of them would all be together in years. Rivendell was hosting it and it would be Jimmy’s first time out of the kingdom. Jimmy and Lizzie were representing the Ocean Empire as heirs but they were allowed to meet and greet with whoever they wanted. Lizzie quickly ran off, introducing herself to the Mezalean prince and leaving Jimmy to flounder alone. He gripped the ribbon between his fingers nervously but took a deep breath and approached the first person he could see. That person was a winged elf with blue hair and a very aloof expression.
“Hello! I’m Jimmy Solidarity of the Ocean Empire!” He said to the elf, his voice coming out louder than he intended from nerves. He winced as the elf turned to him with a mildly peeved expression.
“Scott Smajor, heir of Rivendell.” The elf said coldly. He assessed Jimmy lazily but his eyes stopped on Jimmy’s left hand, the one holding the ribbon. His cold mask dropped and Jimmy could see an expression of shock and mild intrigue before it went back up. “I’ve never spoken to a citizen of the ocean empire. Are you all this small? It's kinda cute” Jimmy bristled a bit at the insult? Flirt? He couldn’t tell but he knew enough to be offended.
“Not all of us can be as tall as elves. I am quite a normal height! And I’m not cute.” Jimmy snapped back. Scott looked briefly surprised at his retort but then smirked.
“Not cute you say? That adorable pout on your face says otherwise.” Scott says, lifting his hand to gesture at Jimmy’s expression. A hand that had a blue green and red flower patterned ribbon tied around it. The same ribbon that existed around Jimmy’s hand. Jimmy’s eyes widened and he looked at his own ribbon. Sure enough, they were connected. So there was a person on the other end of it and Jimmy had found them. But Scott? Really? This ribbon better not be one of those soul things, he does not want to be bonded to that rude elf.
Jimmy realized that he should probably respond to Scott. He’s been standing silently for about a minute now and Scott was surly waiting for him to say something.
“I wasn’t pouting! I was upset at being called cute. Not everyone likes random strangers calling them cute, you know.” Jimmy says back. Scott looks thoughtful.
“I don’t know. If a pretty boy like you walked up to me and called me cute, I don’t think I’d be complaining.” The elf says back. Jimmy sputters as he tries to think of a response. He really wasn’t someone who got flirted with often, even as a joke, and it was very disarming.
“Well I’m not you so I care.” He says back with his face bright red. He knew it wasn’t the best comeback and from Scott’s smug expression he could tell it hadn’t hit the mark he was aiming for.
“Right sure.” Scott says with an eye roll. “This conversation’s being nowhere and I already won it so why don’t we talk about something else. I could take you on a tour? I don’t think you fishfolk get the chance to see elven architecture often.” Jimmy once again bristled at Scott’s mild insult but agreed to the tour. Scott led Jimmy away from the front hall and outside into Rivendell proper. Jimmy wouldn’t admit it but Scott was a pretty good tour guide, he knew a lot about the kingdom’s history and culture and was good at talking about it, even if he still flirted and insulted Jimmy quite often. Scott showed Jimmy the sheep pens, the owl roost, and apiary, all places that Jimmy had only seen glimpses of during the trip here.
In the apiary Jimmy saw something. A red flower, identical to the ones on his ribbon. He called Scott over, asking what kind of flower that was. Scott glanced over and when he saw the red flower Jimmy was talking about he briefly touched the ribbon tied to his own hand before answering.
“Its a poppy. They’re a common flower and grow in most places. You haven’t seen one before?” The elf asked. Jimmy shook his head.
“I don’t think they grow in the swamps. I would have remembered seeing a flower this red before.” Jimmy gently touched a petal of the flower. It was beautiful and it made Jimmy feel…. weirdly bittersweet? It was just a flower. Why did Jimmy feel like crying then? He blinked away the tears that were forming and backed away from the flower. Scott was giving him an odd searching look.
“It's my favorite kind of flower.” Scott said at last. “I always make sure there’s at least one in the apiary at all times.” Jimmy was surprised at this personal info that Scott was just telling him. Scott hadn’t talked much about himself, mostly speaking about the elves and their great kingdom. Him just dropping this strange piece of personal information seems out of pace and it made Jimmy wonder why he did it. The elf was still looking at him, waiting for Jimmy to say something in return.
“It really is lovely.” Jimmy responded. “Does it have any special meanings?” Jimmy had heard of flowers having special meaning attached to them though he hadn’t learned much about them. Lizzie had but not him.
“Sleep, peace, and death are what the poppy represents.” Scott says, unconsciously tugging on the ribbon. Jimmy felt that tug, just more proof that they were connected. Sleep, peace, and death were strange meanings for the flowers on his ribbon. Maybe the type of flower didn’t mean anything but it's a magic ribbon so that was unlikely. Jimmy was hoping that his flowers meant peace or maybe sleep, death was something he’d really not want to be tied with.
Scott had been looking more and more nervous the more Jimmy thought. The elf was trying to hide it but the fluttering of his wings and shuffling of his feet gave him away. Jimmy was about to ask him about the problem when a loud gong rang across the city.
“That's the feast bell. They’re about to start dinner.” Scott says, moving towards the door to the apiary. “We need to go quickly so we’re not late.” Jimmy let the topic of Scott’s anxiety around him drop and the two rushed towards the main hall. They were separated in the crowd when they got there, Jimmy being reunited with Lizzie who asked him where he was and introduced him to her new friend Joel. Jimmy didn’t see Scott for the rest of the night, only briefly catching a glimpse of him when it was time for him to leave.
Jimmy met Scott quite a few times over the course of many years, the two becoming rulers of their own nations, Scott in Rivendell and Jimmy in the newly formed Cod Empire. They maintained a similar relationship as they had when they were young, Scott teasing and flirting with Jimmy and Jimmy getting flustered and firing back with his own bad insults. Neither of them brought up the topic of the ribbon though Jimmy was pretty sure that Scott knew at this point. The many glances at Jimmy’s left wrist was a pretty big clue to that.
Years past, Jimmy and Scott were still leading their empires and occasionally bickering with each other. The demon plagued them for a bit and in that time they became allies in a very strange way, Scott taking Jimmy on a date. The many poppies around the date place was a nice reference to the ribbon and a knowing look from Jimmy let Scott know he knew what was up. It took a couple more suggested dates for Jimmy to realize that the date wasn’t one of Scott’s normal flirts but that Scott was actually interested in him. The two took it slow, going on quite a few more dates before they were ready to speak of the ribbon out-loud.
Jimmy remembered it as a chilly evening, the two of them drinking warm tea inside of Jimmy’s house. Scott had made the excuse of it being too cold back home and that the swamp was just much warmer but Jimmy knew the elf at this point to know that Scott wanted to spend time with him. They had done some baking following a simple recipe that somehow they still managed to mess up and then salvage at the last minute. Now with a mug of tea in hand and slightly burnt cookies on a plate in front of him, Jimmy was feeling brave. He tugged on the ribbon once then twice when Scott didn’t look over from his cup of tea. The second tug caught the elf’s attention and he looked down at the ribbon resting beside them both.
“I think at this point we both know about the existence of this,” Jimmy waved his own end of the ribbon, “and the fact that it connects them. I don’t know about you but we’ve been dating for a bit. We might as well talk about it.” Scott blinked in surprise at the question coming from seemingly nowhere but nodded at set down his drink.
“I was wondering when one of us was going to be brave enough to bring up the soul ribbon.” Scott said. “I’d have thought you would have blurted the question out way before now.” Scott teased with a small smirk. Jimmy let the insult flirt fly over his head, mostly focused on the words soul ribbon.
“Wait, the soul ribbon is like a string of fate? The stuff from those love stories?” Jimmy asked. Scott looked confused at the question.
“Wait, you mean you don’t know about soul ribbons? They’re real and way more than just stories. We’re kind of living proof of that.” Scott said. Jimmy leaned back in his chair a bit more.
“The only information I found about anything similar to the ribbon was stories about red strings of fate that connect people destined to be together. They were just fiction I thought but you’re saying that it’s really real. We’re soulmates?” Jimmy asks.
“Soul ribbons are a bit more complicated than just the idea of fated couples. They’re broken promises from a past life. When two people promise to stay together but something happens where they promise is broken, the universe will step in and give them another chance. Hence, the soul ribbon.” Scott explains. “The pattern of the ribbon normally has some kind of meaning relating to the past life. Soul ribbons can’t really be studied but there have been enough cases that people are now pretty sure of their meaning.”
“So in another life, we made a promise to each other but it got broken? And poppies were important to us?” Jimmy questioned. “Well that explains why I feel so happy and sad at the same time when I see a poppy. Past life emotions, huh.” Scott reached out and took a cookie with one hand and Jimmy's own hand with another.
“I understand if this is a lot to take in.” Scott bit his lip, looking anxious. “Again, the soul ribbon doesn’t mean that we have to be together. It’s just the universe giving us a second chance. So if this is too much for you we don’t have to keep dating-“
“What? Scott no. I don’t want to stop dating. It’s strange, yeah, but I mean I already knew we were connected. This doesn’t have to change anything for us! I’m happy to know how we’re connected, this solves a mystery I’ve always been wondering about. I mean, better lovers in a past life than fated enemies in this one.” Jimmy said passionately, laughing a bit at his own joke at the end. Scott’s face brightened up and he smiled back at Jimmy.
“Was that one of your theories? Fated enemies?” Scott chuckled as he took a bite of his cookie. Jimmy rubbed the back of his neck bashfully with his free hand.
“I mean we were always bickering. It wasn’t too strange of an idea.” Jimmy defended himself.
The two of them continued to talk for quite a few more hours before they eventually fell asleep together, bundled up under a quilt. Their hands were intertwined, the two ends of the ribbons brushing against each other. The universe looked down at these second chance souls and felt pride. They really had found each other again.

So I realized that for Responsibility AU, we've never talked too much about Katherine?
So my idea is that she's never around very much because she's the one kid who has strong willed guards. The reason for this being that she is destined to become The Protector of the Overgrown, and if anything happens to her... well, who's gonna take care of their people?
Her closest friend is Jimmy, if only because the lil slime boy can slip past the guards easily. I mean, he and his sister Lizzie escape their handlers all the time to spend days at Rivendell, its not surprising he can also easily slip past the high defenses of the Overgrown guards. Jimmy brings her cool things like mob heads that Pixlriffs had in surplus, orchids from the Cod Empire as they are one of the few flowers that don't grow naturally in the Overgrown, ect.
The only times she's allowed to visit the Rivendell siblings or other empire kids is with at least 2 guards trailing a safe distance behind. But when fWhip was badly hurt, she ended up staying nearby and teaching the other kids about plants and their healing properties. She wasn't brought back home until she knew fWhip would be okay, and no amount of guards could have dragged her back there kicking or screaming.
After that fiasco with fWhip, the guards decide to be just a little less strict and try to teach her how to defend herself rather than hiding her away. She's given a little more leeway in "escaping" to spend time with the other kids, and she finds herself to be really good friends with Scott, Gem, and Shrub. She especially loves when little Shrub will bap her hand to get her attention before shoving a mushroom into her hands. In return, Katherine will give Shrub flowers that the 4 year old promptly proceeds to munch on.
Overall, she finds herself melding into the group really well, and Xornoth really enjoys that she is the one kid that Shrub acts calmly around and doesn't threaten to stab or teeth on.
Katherine!!!
Friendship with Jimmy's a good one! Him and Lizzy are very sneaky and good at slipping their guards, but they don't always stick together after. Lizzie spends some of her time terrorizing Joel and Joey after his kingdom starts coming out of isolation, and Jimmy used to just wander before he became closer with the Rivendell siblings-one day he just decided to sneak into the Overgrown, met Katherine, and promptly decided they were going to be best friends.
Everybody knows about Katherine's new little friend, it's impossible not too, with all the little trinkets that show up, and the mischief their heir is suddenly indulging in, but nobody for the life of them can ever catch sight of the other. Meanwhile, Lizzie doesn't ask when her brother starts coming back with flower crowns consisting of some of the Overgrown's more coveted blooms, because plausible deniability is something they agreed on a long time ago.
Of course, eventually Jimmy does get caught sneaking around with her, and the hang outs become more official, so he's allowed to bring her to Rivendell one day, where she gets to meet everyone else. And they all adopt her into the group pretty quick, she gets along with them all pretty well. So when one of her new friend's gets hurt, absolutely nobody is surprised when she plants her feet and refuses to move.
It's enough of an event to make the current rulers and her guards decide maybe it's good for her to get out more-because it's so very rare that she really stands her ground, but she certainly did this time. She shows up at Rivendell a lot for official visits, because it's already been established that she's safe there and her guards let her be for the most part.
But every now and then she and Jimmy drop off the map to just do whatever they want and cause mass panic in the meantime. It's then that her guards are reminded that Katherine has really just been allowing them to stick with her, because the Seablings taught her all their tricks a long time ago.
It's nice to see her so happy though, be that sitting with Shubble while they listen to Gem read, or playing with the axolotls with Jimmy and Lizzie.

The Rivendell Festival, hopefully the first of many as Scott wanted to make it an anual celebration, was going spectacularly. Everyone, despite any disagreements between rulers, was happily eating and sharing stories of the past few months. What had once been traumatic interactions with a demon were now stories passed between friends at a long dining table full of many kinds of food.
Joey, ruler of the lost empire, was easily the least trusted at the table, but Scott still wanted him there. “The festival is for everyone,” Scott had promised him. Although nobody had tried attacking him yet, he would only sit next to Scott. Everyone else still harbored some resentment towards him. He had been corrupted, yes, but he had fallen in love with Xornoth before that.
On Scott’s other side was Lizzie, then Pearl, Katherine, and Shelby. He sat directly across from Jimmy, who was silently upset he wasn’t where his seabling sat. Myth was across from Joey, they shared guilt of being possessed and Joey was almost sure the king wouldn’t attack him. Joel and Lizzie were across from each other too. Jimmy wanted to mention how easy it would be for the married couple to sit next to each other if Jimmy and Lizzie swapped. But he still enjoyed being next to Myth, and Joel was as much his brother as Lizzie was his sister. Fwhip, Gem, and Pix took the other seats.
Overall, conversation flowed easily. Scott and Joey were the most reluctant to actually talk about their experiences with Xornoth, Joey was expected but everyone brushed Scott’s silence off as a lack of direct interaction. It wasn’t hidden anymore that Xornoth was his brother, and that for some reason the demon never attacked him.
Joey, Gem, and Scott did know why, but that wasn’t important anymore.
Slowly but surely the festive mood faded, as the food was finished off and the sun started to dip low in the sky. Rivendell glowed with candles, crystals, and magic, but it was getting later and nights in the mountains were cold.
“So,” Scott started, “does anyone else have any huge announcements to make?” He looked out at his guests, expecting to see nobody move other than looking at their friends.
Fwhip, ruler of the Grimmlands, stepped up to the other side of the table and produced a golden object from a bag he had hung on his chair. A crown, with a bright gemstone for each empire.
“This crown is a copy of an ancient relic. One of the laws engraved into these lands themselves is that whoever wears it can make a rule that every kingdom must follow.”
Scott’s mind raced with possibilities, both as what he would do and what other would.
“Now, we all have revivification relics, correct?” Fwhip waits for confirmation from everyone seated at the table to continue. “I say we fight for this. May the one most suited for the crown win.”
Immediately, almost everyone jumped to get their hands on it. Myth no longer sought power, Katherine would not fight for it, and Fwhip had never removed his hand from it.
Scott could see, in that split second of energy before the chaos would start, the bloodshed that would follow. Nobody would walk away unhurt, most would die for this. People who had just been feasting together would be at each other’s throats.
“Stop!” His voice rings, but is silent next to the other sound that booms at the same time.
Something pierced the table, right through the center of the crown. The table cracked and shattered, the earth underneath shook, and the crown, in all its golden glory, bent and tore like tender meat from the sheer power of this sudden calamity.
Once people were back on their feet after being pushed by by the force, or for those who stayed away, like Scott and Myth, once they had time to realize what happened. They noticed what the force was, what had shook the earth, what had destroyed the crown, what had truly destroyed the peace.
A giant spire of ice, like a stalagmite of fast frozen water, was what had done the damage. Despite how much damage it had done, very little had been done to it. A few scratches from the wood, a small piece chipped and there, but this ice was harder than any sword the rulers currently brandished, or armor they currently wore.
The crown had been lifted up by it, the pieces of torn metal now sliding down the sides and landing in the ruins of the table.
Scott suddenly flashed back to the freezing lake, just this morning. The boots of frost shouldn’t have produced ice that lasted longer than a few minutes, but he had checked right before the feast and it had only gotten stronger and thicker.
“Oh no.” Scott backed up, almost forgetting how close to the cliffs he was. This had to be his doing, just like the lake. But he had to play it cool, none of them knew about the ice.
Once the initial shock faded from the guests, the questions started coming. What was the ice, would the crown be fixable, what was the ice?
Scott couldn’t answer truthfully, that he suspected it was himself, so he muttered a silent apology to Xornoth and lied. “I knew wearing this crystal was a mistake, maybe some of his power leaked through.”
He got blamed for being stupid, even by Jimmy and his closest allies. But they accepted it as a mistake and only left him with the punishment of cleaning up the mess on his own. Fwhip promised the crown could be remade, as long as Scott delivered the gems to him after cleaning up.
Scott waved goodbye to his guests, nobody left in high spirits after that. Fwhip stuck around for an extra minute, and he showed Scott why.
At first glance it looked like his hand had been scraped, but then Scott noticed the tiny ice shards under the skin. “Can you heal this?
“Are you sure you want me to heal you? Scott fingered the crystal. “If I cast spells right now he might-“
“Got it. Do you have any other healers then? Myth’s been practing but he’s…”
“Not ideal?” Scott smiled.
“You said it not me. But yeah.”
“I’ll show you the way.”
