Well. Every tmnt artist has to turn them into humans eventually, I suppose.

Sorry for not posting a ton lately, I have been................. playing fire emblem three houses.............. busy............ Also I've been feeling a little burned out on art, admitedly. Don't worry, it's very much temporary! Last month was just pretty high tempo for me, expecially with the Cell Talk comic, so I just needed to take a short break from drawing to also play fire emblem but I'm getting back into an art-mood now! I decided to draw humanified turtles as a bit of a warm up basically, I've been wanting to do it for quite some time so it was just a fun little thing for me :]

Anyway, some thoughts about the designs-

A lot of people draw Leo as blonde, and I was fully intending to draw him blonde as well, but then I just wanted to see what he'd look like with brown hair instead and I just.... liked that a bit more, so he's a brunette now. Also he has dimples because of course he has dimples. And Mikey has freckles because OF COURSE he has freckles! And Donnie ALSO has freckles because he's my blorbo and I give all my blorbos freckles cuz they're neat. All of them have pretty small eyebrows except for Donnie because he fills them in with makeup. I thought for a while of how I would translate Leo's facial markings into his human design, and I ended up settling for birthmarks (also some red eyeliner cuz his face needs a bit of red on it)

adventures in bookbinding: making the negret colophon playing card book!

it's diy girl summer and i am Bored. time to attempt a completely new craft with zero research except for like. 3 youtube videos!

so, to start off, i suppose i will ramble a wee bit about my plans/goals/reasoning. truth be told, i just really really like my blorbo who book binds and i think it would be very fun to become Just like him for real. therefore we will be embarking on a journey!! to become my blorbo and also find something crafty to do today. quick psa that this is not a real tutorial because i have absolutely zero experience, but more of a general guide and/or craft with me! let's do this in sectionssss!!

1 - the plan!!

so for my first bookbinding project we are going to do something small, starting out by being silly and taking a page (lol) out of negret colophon's book (lol....) when he makes a tiny book and uses two playing cards as the covers. this will give me a little tiny trial run so i can learn the basic skills and use easily available materials around my house!! afterwards i think i'll sketch out a more ambitious journal idea - i have lots of fabric lying around that would work perfectly to cover a cardboard cover. wow, that's wordy! so! without further ado let's begin :) negret's little bookbinding project is described in the first chapter of raconteurs in this little excerpt here.

seems simple enough!! also the absolute perfect beginner project. it is tiny and the materials consist of Literally Anything. let's get groovy!!

2. materials!!

here's what we're working with:

playing cards! i found a deck lying around in a random drawer somewhere and chances are you have one laying around too. i chose the ace of spades and diamonds, because the text specifies a pair of aces but i couldn't find a matching pair, lol. i was also very tempted to choose one of the king cards as an homage to maisie's story later on (and because the king cards are absolutely gorgeous and detailed) but we're sticking to canon right now. we'll use the other cards for a future project.

needles!! a lot of the tutorials i see use very big or thick needles but i don't have those and this is also a very small project, not a huge journal, so any can work.

thread!! use whatever color you would like! at this point i was very indecisive because i have a lot of options and they're all quite pretty colors, but i settled on red later.

an assortment of papers!! use literally whatever you have lying around. for me, i managed to dig up the one scrap of newspaper in my house, since that's specifically listed, but most of my pages were from a book i sacrificed for an old art project, magazines and flyers, a lot of which were college mail because we're at that point in my life, lol. this is a recycling sort of project. choose anything! the more variety the better :)

i didn't display these in the photo, but if you have an awl, use an awl! i do not have one so i improvised, which i'll elaborate upon later. also, scissors! to cut the pages to scale. a ruler also came in handy :)

alright, now that we have all our tools in order, it's time to get into it :)

3. creating the pages!!

our first step is to measure our playing cards! you might not have to do this step because i'm fairly certain most cards are uniform in size/make, but check just in case, lol.

my cards measured to be 2.5" wide and 3.5" tall. i am no mathematician but using my singular brain cell i deduced that the papers should be twice the width of our cover, since those will fold to be the same size. so, using my Expert calculations, i made a little template cut from an index card measuring 3.5" x 5".

now we get to cutting!! using your various materials, cut out a bunch of papers to the size of your template. i just cut around it because i could not be bothered enough to waste time tracing, lol. i didn't go in with a plan, but i cut 16 papers to this size, which ended up being perfect. here are all my pages !! look at all the colors and textures!! the fun thing about the project being so small is that you can specifically cut the pages as the most interesting photos or sections, or you can even do it at angles too. as long as it ends up the right size, anything is fair game

now, we're going to make the papers into signatures! i just learned this word today lol. essentially, we will be grouping our papers and then folding those in half to become little mini books/pages. since i had 16 papers, i made 4 signatures with 4 pages each.

at this point i was tempted to go cut up more and make a fifth signature, but i decided against it since i didn't want the book to become too thick, and 4 sets with 4 papers each ended up being just about right. one of the tutorials i watched suggested that you group your signatures with paperclips or bobby pins, and at the time i waved off the suggestion but i totally agree now. i didn't have any clips to work with and i managed fine without them, but it definitely would have been easier if i had. so if you have them, use them! it'll make your life better lol. at this point you can stack your signatures together and itll look like a book!

oh yeah now we're cooking!!

4. preparing for binding!!

it was at this point in the process where i ventured out from knowing what i was doing to completely balling, but everything turned out okay and i'll walk you through it! our next step is to create the holes with which we will sew our signatures together. we're going to mark those off. once again i have zero clue how to do math but i managed to use my giant incredible smooth brain one more time to mark my template with a few equidistant points with which we can mark our signatures.

in case it's not clear, i kind of just counted the lines and then had to look up how much that was, but you can also just eyeball it if you're good enough. side note, i added two more holes after this, with one just below the very top and one just below the very bottom.

pardon my very unsightly nails, lol - here's how i used my template to mark the very center of each of my signature. you'll want to mark the point on the center line where you folded it while keeping the pages of each signature together. HOPEFULLY WITH A PAPERCLIP. and without further ado it's time for the stabbing!

now...here's where i got a little bit sacrilegious. you'll recall that earlier i mentioned how i don't have an awl in my possession yet? well, i managed to improvise a solution...

yes that is a sewing pin. IN MY DEFENSE it's all i had, and functionally it's basically the same as an awl! just on a much smaller scale. it worked out though - i imagine that if i'd been using thicker paper it would have posed a bit of a problem but for this project specifically, it was fine. do not kill me book binders. now it's time to get serious...

5. the binding

everyone stay calm! stay calm! it will be okay. i was lowkey intimidated by this part as this was Truly out of my depth of expertise, but i promise it's not that complicated. you're going to get your needle and thread now - i settled upon this gorgeous red color because it contrasted nicely with the playing cards, and there really wasn't much red in the papers i chose.

gorgeous!! tbh i always knew i'd go with the red because i've always envisioned the book with red thread anyways. like come on look at my very first drawing of negret WITH it. literally the exact same materials. i simply had to.

okay. now to the binding part. i don't have any real photos or insights or instructions for this whole stage because 1. i was deep in focus mode and 2. entirely relied on a tutorial for this part. here's the tutorial i used - massive shoutout to this lovely lady ! my spine didn't turn out nearly as neat as hers because i did not properly follow directions for the first bunch of knots (and i had to kind of improvise with the cover) but here's how it turned out!

not too bad for my first book, lol. try not to stress out about it being perfect because this book is not supposed to be perfect! the imperfections give it character. worst case scenario, if you really mess up, your eclectic book is just a little more eclectic than intended. and that's never a crime :)

now the one problem i had to figure out on my own was how to attach the covers, since most tutorials explain how to attach actual big separate covers and not - essentially paper. i ended up just... attaching them as if they were another page or signature to the front and back. my holes on the covers were a few millimeters away from the edge, though, since there's no crease or fold to align them with. what i did was essentially do the first knots/stitching on the signature like the tutorial said, but for each hole i sewed through in the first/last signature, i also made an additional loop through the adjacent hole on the cover. you can kind of see how i passed my needle through like instructed and then took a little extra detour to stitch the card as well. in some places i ended up making new holes in the signature too that were closer to where the cards' holes lined up?? try not to do that but it worked and it looks fine so really whatever makes it attach and hold is perfect.

6. bask in your glory!!!

aaaand that's it!! you did it!! this was a ton of fun to work on and i absolutely loved making this little adventure into a new craft with something so near and dear to my heart. if you make one please be sure to tag me!! i would love love LOVE to see :) here's an additional picture of my little monster (+ next to the legend himself. art credit to me lol. look the books are twinning!!)

This is just a really intriguing concept!

AHHHHHH yes I was really hoping someone would ask about this. While I love all my OCs obvi this one is my big blorbo from this particular project.

MGME except it's my OC from my sci fi novel

so, this OC is very much Elrian coded. Or rather, she's a very similar character, I guess? That was actually one of my concerns while writing Stars -- to make them two distinctly different characters.

she comes from a very similar background to Elrian actually, just in a sci fi context and from a very different cultural set.

The other important thing to note here is that my sci fi has fantasy elements, and the OC's main culture is polytheistic. Her specific house worships a deity that's meant to grant immortality and prophetic dreams -- at great cost.

This OC has a lot of prophetic dreams.

Unlike Elrian, she does not have an Elrond figure to help her get out of her shithole of a life. She has to do that all by herself.

But of course I got to thinking haha what if she had Elrond.

And then I was like--- hold on, wait a second.....wait.... what if...

The main isekai force here are her dreams. I'm thinking like, her actual physical self is retained in her world but she gets transported into Middle Earth

Language barrier obvs because I'm a sucker for language barriers.

Elladan and Elrohir find her and are like "???? random???? woman/young girl (I have not decided at what point in her life she gets transported. The book series follows her life from about the age of fourteen up until her late thirties. My one stipulation is that she probably needs to have zero of her kids that she has yet). Anyway Elladan and Elrohir don't speak her language obvs and she's just like "well this is a werd af dream what the fuck."

They figure if anyone will know what she's speaking or at least what language root it is, their dad will.

So off to Rivendell they go.

(There is an alternate version of this actually because I can't decide between the two of her getting transported to the second age and having a much younger Elrond -- and this being set in Lindon and Gil-Galad's court, which I think would play off of this OC's backstory in very interesting ways....)

let's go with that because it's more interesting. The only further fun part of the Rivendell branch is just more of SOL and the weird dream back-and-forth.

But there are several cultural misunderstandings that can actually come from her being in Lindon around Gil-Galad because she comes from a god-king culture (and is, in fact, a crucial member of her particular god-king's household who is, you guessed it, striving for immortality and has so far succeeded. This is like.... a numenor situation? basically? I think that's the closest comparable situation).

I do love the idea of younger Elrond trying so very hard to learn her language and connect with her and figure out where tf she belongs.

And basically, when she goes to sleep in her world she's transported to middle earth, and when she goes to sleep in middle earth she wakes up in her world

And there's just this awful back and forth and it's very jarring and hard on her because her life in her world fucking sucks

And honestly I would love for her to find a way to stay in Middle Earth.

But basically it's an excuse for some magic, and my good ol fav trope of 'healing from trauma and learning to trust' -- and also I feel like once she and Elrond get to a point where they're able to speak in a broken mish-mosh of each other's languages there's potential for her to absolutely spill her guts because she still thinks this is a dreamscape.

which is great for her because this character is INCREDIBLY angry and INCREDIBLY traumatized and she bottles up all of her emotions.

I have not worked out how I get her to stay in middle earth though. That's the problem. Unless she makes some kind of deal with the Valar or something idk?

I am probably not explaining this well this one is soooo vague. It mostly consists of conversations between this OC and Elrond and a heck of a lot of cultural miscommunication and assumptions about things.

but she would hate Gil-Galad she would hate him sooooo much haha

poor Elrond trying to explain that Gil-Galad is actually really cool and not a god-king wtf

also there's that fun aspect of like. The house she works for is attempting to achieve immortality at any cost (and murdering a fuck ton of people to do it) and THESE people are immortal???????? Who did YOU guys murder to do it?????? hello?????

I'm rambling.

ANNA!!!!!

Back to the basics, list time!!!

She is in literally every game except fe2 and it's remake fe15

I adore her little finger chin touch that she does in every game

Every iteration of her is actually a different person and they're all a big family of sisters

^this also has the implication that Anna has interdimensional travel powers (and also time travel)(this is also hinted at in engages epilogue)

I believe there's two eras of Anna, pre and post-awakening. With pre-awakening being more down to earth and existing a lot more as the menu and secret shop person, with post-awakening being more high energy, and I don't want to say one-note, but more, let's say focused on a specific gimmick, which in Annas case is being a cuttthroat buisnesswoman, and this often comes along as borderline psychopathic (/pos imo), but I don't think this was the intention. I love both versions

Post-awakening she's actually a playable character in almost all the games, including Awakening (Very fun to use, trickster class which is staves and Swords, she does especially well with Levin sword and that's always fun), Fates (haven't used her, dlc), Three Houses (kinda sucks and has no supports, also dlc and one of the other dlc characters is just better in everyway gameplay wise) and Engage (also very fun to use, uses axes at base and bows on promotion which is very nice, she also has great magic and can be very good as a mage)

Sells you drugs

So Anna huh, the most reocurring fe character by far, and I love reocurring characters. She's a shrewd buisnesswoman and always have been, but she's a pretty chill gal pre-awakening and just hangs around and gives you tips. And sells you drugs, don't forget about that. Then in awakening she returns once again, but now with a more, high-energy personality. The reason I called her borderline psychopathic is that she here begins to make a lot of quips and jokes about killing people in ways that are some kind of money puns in a very lighthearted tone, "prices aren't the only things i slash" for exampel. I personally find this kind of endearing (this holds up with my other blorbo Henry also from awakening). Then in engage she shows up as a child who has been lost from her family (her anna sisters) Here in engage she has a wonderful childlike feel when doing all her merchant things, while still having that dash of psychosis. And I find this very endearing as well.

She also has a boyfriend who is also reocurring, just not as much has her. Meet Jake! His personality and looks vary a bit.

Then there was the final dlc to awakening, bringing one final challenge to all who played the game. Apotheosis, featuring the final final boss...

Anna the merchant

This is an insane boss, probably the single strongest boss in all of fire emblem, with insane stats like 99 hp, 60 str, 50 mag, 70 skl, 70 spd, 65 lck, 55 def and 55 res. So insanely much.

But that's not even the worst part, her skills are. Counter dealing all physical damage back, Vantage+ to always attack first, Aether which is usually only a main character skill, dragonskin (????????) which halfs all damage dealt and RIGHTFUL GOD

RIGHTFUL GOD????????

rightful god gives 30% extra proc chance to all proc skills

BUT EVEN THE FACT THAT SHE HAS A SKILL CALLED RIGHTFUL GOD IS SCARY ENOUGH AND HAS SOME WEIRD IMPLICATIONS

yeah, insane boss

But overall yeah I just like her, great vibe tbh.

I think me liking her might also have something to do with that she reminds me a lot of an oc I made a loooong time ago with pie who has a special place in my heart.

Finally working my way through The House of Hades 1) Everyone's right, this is the best book so far, and I've been eating these things up like candy so that says a lot 2) I AM SCREAMING I AM AT THE PART FOR MY BLORBO What this is exactly was spoiled for me long ago, but I had no idea when, where, or how this came to light in the series, and I DEFINITELY WASN'T EXPECTING THIS, so I'm LOSING MY MIND RIGHT NOW

Unhinged reaction (with spoilers, beware!) below the cut, but the TL;DR is that this sound clip was playing in my head the SECOND I realized where I was and what was about to take place.

The book: “Your master?” Jason had a flashback to a floating palace above Pikes Peak in Colorado, where he’d visited (and barely survived) the studio of a crazy weatherman who claimed he was the god of all the winds. “Please tell me your master isn’t Aeolus.” “That airhead?” Favonius snorted. “No, of course not.” “He means Eros.” Nico’s voice turned edgy. “Cupid, in Latin.” ME: OHHHH? OH OH OH??!! OH?!!! OHHH!!!??!!!! The book: Favonius smiled. “Very good, Nico di Angelo. I’m glad to see you again, by the way. It’s been a long time.” Nico knit his eyebrows. “I’ve never met you.” “You’ve never seen me,” the god corrected. “But I’ve been watching you. When you came here as a small boy, and several times since. I knew eventually you would return to look upon my master’s face.” ME: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OH MY GOD OH MY GOD The book: Nico turned even paler than usual. His eyes darted around the cavernous room as if he was starting to feel trapped. “Nico?” Jason said. “What’s he talking about?” “I don’t know. Nothing.”

Me: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

The book: “Nothing?” Favonius cried. “The one you care for most…plunged into Tartarus, and still you will not allow the truth?” Me: *OHSHIT.MP3 PLAYS AS I RUN AROUND THE ROOM SCREAMING*

The book: Suddenly Jason felt like he was eavesdropping.

The one you care for most. He remembered what Piper had told him about Nico’s crush on Annabeth. Apparently Nico’s feelings went way deeper than a simple crush. Me, being totally normal about this: JASON YOU FOOL The book: “You took the scepter,” Jason guessed. “For safekeeping,” Favonius agreed. “It is one of Cupid’s many treasures, a reminder of better times. If you want it…” Favonius turned to Nico. “You must face the god of love.” Me: *probably about to die* The book: Nico stared at the sunlight coming through the windows, as if wishing he could escape through those narrow openings. Jason wasn’t sure what Favonius wanted, but if facing the god of love meant forcing Nico into some sort of confession about which girl he liked, that didn’t seem so bad. Me: *WEEPING* JASON. BUDDY... The book: “Nico, you can do this,” Jason said. “It might be embarrassing, but it’s for the scepter.” Nico didn’t look convinced. In fact he looked like he was going to be sick. But he squared his shoulders and nodded. “You’re right. I—I’m not afraid of a love god.”

So I was hanging out with my buds @maximoffwxnda and @fairyysoup last night, and after a fun round of FranticFanfic (which, if you write fic, you should definitely either look into playing solo or with your friends at franticfanfic.com), we were digging back through some of our older rounds, and I found this little gem from like? summer of ‘22?? I asked the other two if they were okay with me posting it, and just thought I'd share it here for funsies ✨

for those who don't know how it works, basically you set a time limit (three minutes or five or more or less depending on how much of a masochist you are) and after everyone throwing in some character suggestions at the beginning, you pick two out of the proverbial hat, and start to write a fic. it's then an exquisite corpse situation where you're randomly shuffled someone else's fic where they left off and write as fast as you can, and then after three switches, the fics are finished and shared and everyone reacts and votes and has a gay old time. it can be played with blorbos or OCs, and obviously in this case, we used both! it's a blast seeing how everyone reacts to weird character combinations, as well as getting to play with your friends' OCs for a few minutes like the beloved barbie they are (and seeing how well they know yours is just!!! a whole other kind of love omg 🥰). we usually play with our friend @bigtiddythanos in the mix too, and it’s always a fantastic evening 🖤

I'll tag the places where we switch off -- but at the end of each section, so if you want to guess who's who ahead of time, feel free. :) I think we were working with around three minutes apiece here?

Maxi squints at the man who just stepped into the antechamber of the House, dressed in an overly heavy coat for the hot Louisiana weather.

"Who the hell is this guy?" Hector asks, whispering from behind his hand in the most non-confidential way possible.

Maxi thinks for a moment before he makes a note of the oddly close resemblance he has to the man. "Oh, it's our cousin from Russia or whatever."

"Sokovia." Their cousin, Zemo, glares caustically at the two men as he closes the front door. "Your cousin from Sokovia, thank you. It appears the House hasn't changed much in the twenty years I've been away. Not a bad look, but still, it has that rustic charm you never could get rid of."

Maxi's eye twitches. "Why are you here, exactly?"

"And what's with the coat, man?" Hex laughed.

Zemo fixed his icy eyes on him.

Unlike with most people, Hector refused to shrivel under the force of his gaze. "It's like a million degrees out there."

"Some of us know the meaning of fashion. I like your… shirt."

Hector looked down at his t-shirt and scoffed. "Whatever. I'm gonna bother Rora. Lemme know when Moneybags McGee leaves," Hector said over his shoulder as he walked out of the room.

"Now… Why are you here?" Maxi asked once more with thinly veiled frustration.

"You've heard of James Barnes? The Winter Soldier?" Zemo asked conversationally as he pulled off a set of leather gloves.

Maxi shook his head, crossing his arms over his chest.

Zemo tilted his head at his cousin. "Then surely you've heard of Captain America."

Maxi had. Everyone had. Anyone who hasn't was living under a rock. Or dead. Speaking of which… Maxi had a body currently waiting in the basement. It was in rough shape and needed to be disposed of.

While Zemo had seen and caused his fair share of corpses in his life, he didn't need to know his extended family's secrets.

"Well then, The Winter Soldier and Captain America are currently on their way. I suppose I should've led with that."

Maxi blinked, trying not to let the utter drop in his gut show too much on his face. "Uh, you fuckin' think? Jesus Christ, man," he turned back towards the basement door. "You're family, you know what kind of operation we run around here. You couldn't've just shot me a text as soon as you heard?"

Zemo arched an elegant brow. "I much prefer to handle these things in… person."

"Well that's fantastic for you!" Maxi let his full exasperation shine through. "You're not the one who's got a corpse in the fuckin' basement!"

"This is a mortuary," Zemo waved a hand dismissively. "I'm sure it's not that out of place."

"Look," Maxi took his glasses all the way off, pinching the bridge of his nose to ward off an oncoming stress migraine. "What the fuck do you want? Why are you here, and are you actually gonna help with any of this?"

"I'm more than happy to distract them," Zemo said in a way that would've been soothing and not condescending on anyone else. "Though I do wonder why your affairs aren't more… in order. If I remember," he cast a gaze over the room. "My uncle ran a rather… tight ship. Vincent, I believe?"

Zemo wasn't used to people suddenly shoving a scalpel against his throat unexpectedly, or for it to glow a blazing red to match the eyes of his cousin.

"Give me one good reason not to add you to the assembly in the basement," Maxi muttered, his voice layered with something that wasn't quite human.

Zemo's eyes, after so long, flickered with their own light - a deep, ominous amethyst. "Because," he murmured, his voice velvet and low. "The last thing we want to do is deny They Who Provide one more potential heir. Don't we, Maximilian?"

Maxi blinked, admittedly looking caught off-guard. "Since when did you--"

They both stopped, turning with wide eyes as a singular knock seemed to echo through the vast foyer.

They looked back to each other with a frown.

(aaand obviously this was me -- it's two years later and I just noticed I shifted into past tense out of habit instead of present, lmao. :'D)

anyway! I'm in a space where Zemo and the Morvants each have control of half my brain right now, so this was right in the sweet spot of what I needed, lmao. thanks again to my friends for letting me post this little snippet, and looking forward to writing more with y’all soon!! ✨🥰

Round 1 poll 13: Rev. Green from Cluedo vs the Nachtraven from Nachtraven

Rev. Green:

1) Literally just a random board game character 😪 2) Ok so basically here’s the deal. One day, about a year and a half or two years ago, I saw some random thing related to Clue online. I (dual U.S. American and Russian citizen, because I was born in America to an immigrant parent, I PROMISE this is important) was confused because among the cast of characters was “Mr. Green”. Now, I hadn’t played Clue in a very long time. It wasn’t my favorite game as a kid, my only memories of it were wanting to play as Ms. Peacock and then my brother taking her and making me pick someone else, but I was pretty confident the character was Reverend Green. What happened? Was he excommunicated?? I kind of figured the name was just changed to reflect a more secular culture and that I had unknowingly played an old copy of the game as a kid.

But it fascinated me. So I spent months on and off researching the topic. (poorly, might I add, it wasn’t a complicated issue. But still.) I found out about many changes from version to version. Clue Junior, Clue VCR Mystery, Clue Master Detectives, all of it. And the whole time, Green was there to greet me in each new version. It was the first thing I always checked. Was he Mister or Reverend? I found out in one version he was a defrocked priest turned businessman, and in another a scam artist who pretended to be a member of the clergy to pull of a scheme. Closer. I ran polls, I went to irl Clue events, and eventually I found what I was looking for the whole time. Green was a Reverend in the 1944 patent of the game, and the subsequent 1949 U.K. release of Cluedo. But, because of fear that U.S. Citizens would take issue with a member of the church being suspected of murder, Parker Brothers changed the name to Mister Green for the U.S. release.

That all could have taken me five minutes of googling, but honestly the chase made the result so much more worth it. And yet, there was something more there in the back of my mind. This all was well and good, but why was I so sure of the U.K. version of the name? My father’s family is Irish so we have a pretty healthy hatred of all things British, there’s no way my dad would’ve had us play that version of the game. Right? But thanks to a response from a poll I ran, I found out that the German version also went with Reverend. Because Green is an Anglican, I kind of assumed that the U.S. change might have been carried over into other international releases. But no! That made me realize that Mister Green is an outlier and that almost all languages of the game use Reverend. So then last night the pieces finally clicked together. I asked my mom to confirm a hunch I had, not expecting her to at all remember something this trivial. Like I said, I didn’t play it much as a kid. Maybe we didn’t even own a copy, and I had just played it at a library or a hurricane shelter or a relative’s house or something. But she remembered. We did, in fact, own the game. Not just any version, but a RUSSIAN COPY. I unknowingly grew up with Cluedo! So I had every reason to believe it was Reverend Green and be confused when I heard otherwise.

Tl;dr, minor version difference between Russian and American copies of a board game gave me a hyperfixation and a blorbo.

Nachtraven:

SO! The Nachtraven is the titular character of a Dutch children’s gameshow.

They’re a cyberpunk-synthwave-medieval fantasy knight (which is honestly an awesome aesthetic) who breaks into children’s bedrooms at night, lures from their sleepovers and makes them compete against each other in challenges… and the winners get to have a lovely sleepover at whatever place they were lured to.

Seriously, they’re so ominous, so sinister, so villain-coded, but all they want to do is to make children’s sleepovers even better. They’re just a nice guy/entity.

They don’t speak, and instead communicate using electronic beeps, gestures, tape recordings of a woman’s voice and the visor of their knight’s helmet as an LED display they put words on.

Seriously, if this was an American show, all the cryptidcore kids would be citing them as one of their biggest childhood influences. I hope that one day they will be recognised as the true cryptid they are.

had a really long blogpost (basically a 'look at all the things you did this year you didnt waste it' thing thus the above lists) but i think i'll just keep it to my notion notes lest this post becomes a traumadumping ground ecks dee tl;dr failed a Very Important (to me) Thing early 2022 that kind of shattered any crumb of self-esteem i had and made me question everything i did onwards (especially in regards to doujin stuff) and then basically physical health issues affecting mental health and vice versa which is fun but fuck it we ball.....(try)

Favorite thing about them: HE JUST SO CUTE! I'm a sucker for characters who appear one way but then completely take you off guard. Robin looks like your typical grunting simple caveman but then reveals himself to be the kindest, wisest, most mentally tortured character in the show. Add to that he's basically a human pupper. My previous blorbos (Thirteen, Arthur Morgan, Spike) have all had "Kitty!" vibes but Robin is pure Pupper.

Least favorting thing about them: That he didn't get to move on. :( The show was really playing into how desperately he wanted to go by the end. I was even certain that as soon as he felt "Christmassy" he would get to leave but it didn't happen. Let him rest! Also the incest...Just ew.

Favourite line: "She no porcupine!" / "I want my lawyer." / "Before you was moonah, before house was moonah, everything come, everything go, but always there, moonah." / "I miss a lot of people. But more come along."

Brotp: Canon is him and Julian. Chess husbands are so real, but queerplatonic imo. Fanon is him and Alison, he is her good boy.

OTP: I'm like the only person who actually thinks him and Mary were cute? Gremlin couple ftw. But really Robin/Mary/Annie is my favourite polyship and the only one I've actually written fic for so far.

Notp: Pretty much everyone except Mary, Annie, Julian and possibly Thomas.

Random headcanon: His whole going mad thing from the book is still an ongoing problem. He has more coping mechanisms now but still has bad 'spells', some of the ghosts help him through it but others have become so used to him just "being strange" they just ignore him and wait for it to pass like in Not Again.

Unpopular opinion: I think he was a good dad. For the time. For a man who had thirty kids and most of them probably with his sister. The way he talks about the importance of "raising children together, in peace and love" and watches over his animal friends when they have babies, how sweet he was putting Kitty to sleep, he seems to love just being around kids. I dunno if that's unpopular, it just always seems to be Pat or Cap who get talked about when it comes to dads and my boy was over here fathering future generations, as well as putting the work in to raise said kids - but he often gets passed off as too immature or uncaring, like forgetting the whole duality of his character and how he's never as simple as he appears to be. Like sure he probably picked those babies up by their ankles and carried them on his shoulders, but he never dropped them!

Song I associate with them: Starman by Bowie. My Tears Ricochet by Taylor Swift is so him/Sophie/Humphrey.

tag gamerules: favorite: movie, hobby, animal, character, color, place, season, album, food

movie: attack the block - 2011 had some banger movies and this was one of them. it's got everything one could hope for: great actors, superb acting, action, quirky weirdness, kickass aliens, and john boyega's movie debut! I could rewatch this right alongside the abyss ('84), the thing ('82) and battle los angeles (2011).

hobby: gaming! I'm a hardcore gamer that likes just about every genre on the market but I'm particularly in love with horror/zombies (multiplayer so I can play with friends), action-adventure, and looter shooters.

animal: cats! I love pretty much all animals but these little land sharks hold a special place in my heart and my life. I've got two right now but I want more. My husband has to reign me in...even though he's just as bad. What can I say? we're cat parents.

character: g.i. joe was one of my favorite cartoons growing up and thus my love for military men and women bloomed. at first I had all the love for shipwreck and lady j but then this man appeared: sgt. ronald tadur aka Dusty (Rudat). he's a desert survival expert/specialist who is so damn good and loyal and wonderful that I still simp for him decades later. he will always be in my heart.

color: usually i'd just say black but, well, midnight blue is simply gorgeous and I've got an accent wall in my bedroom with gold leaves dotting it. it's such a pretty color.

place: the woods! I cannot live without trees surrounding me. I basically forced my husband (then bf) to move up with me because I refused to live in a city of any kind. before I really lost the ability to walk unaided I used to trek through the woods behind my grandparents house on the mountain and through the woods behind the little places I grew up in. (we moved a lot when I was younger). I still like taking a trail or two in a state park but I so freakin' miss being able to just get lost in the thick of'em and spend hours just exploring.

season: fall! i love watching the leaves and brush change, the pumpkins and gords starting to adorn street corners and window displays, pumpkin spice EVERYTHING, the cooler temperatures (sweater weather!!), and the coming of Halloween!

album: needtobreath's hard love - this album saw me through a rough patch and kept my heart filled with a soft kind of wonder. all the tracks are excellent but I've got such a hardon for HAPPINESS and the signature song hard love. honestly, i pretty much have a love affair with all their albums. Bonus: HAPPINESS, Bottom of a Heartbreak, I am Yours, and West Texas Wind are 100% blorbo songs.

food: stromboli!! omg I could eat this deliciousness every single day and not tire (not with how many combinations you can make). it's so good ;A;

The fact that I started watching The Untamed only to prove my mom that the "besties" she was watching on Netflix were waaaay past the threshold of friendship and more into absolutely-gay-for-each-other grounds.

Okay, so. I visit my mom very little because of my schedule, but when I do, she usually gets me to sit on the couch and we watch movies or series, anything good that she's found on the internet. And one time I went to her house, and she was like... super into The Untamed series. She was well into ch 15, so when I sat down I didn't understand shit but before I knew it, we were already at ch 30 and I was SO sure the two protagonists were absolutely queer.

She had the audacity to fight me on this while on the TV WWX was gazing at LWJ and the later smiling at the gremlin, like. Mom, I would give up my lung for my friends but I do not make tHAT face at them!!!!!! I dont look at them as if they've hung the stars and the moon upon my sky!!!! These two??? Nah, these two are one step away from eating each other's faces at any moment due.

And she still didn't dare acknowledge that I was right, even when the stairs scene played, not even in the scene of the Jingshi when LXC basically tells WWX "be good for my brother or else *flute solo*".

And as the petty ass person that I am, I went into the internet and found the original novel, read it and came back to her with FACTS and a full investigation on Chinese censure, and before I knew it, the two pinning gays were my new blorbos.

I proved a point tho. Even if it cost me my life lol

If I'm a writer, how do I make my stuff good and popular like yours?

short answer: good and popular are subjective!!! write because it makes you happy!! write what makes you feel good!! the more self-indulgent your writing is the better the outcome is!!! writing is only good and fun if you're writing things that feel good and fun to you!

wordsier answer:

I know everyone's sick to death of just hearing "practice! practice is the only way!", but a lot of the times practicing is what helps! I think what a lot of people neglect to mention about repetitive action, though, is that too much of it can lead to burnout. Practicing every day can be hrlpful, if you have the time, energy, and motivation, but for a lot of people that sort of dedication isn't possible. Don't force yourself to just sit down and write because you feel like you have to, don't put pressure and deadlines on yourself, because in a lot of those cases writing is gonna feel a lot less like something you want to do and a lot more like something you have to do. It reactivates that same part of your brain that doesn't want to write essays for homework and you just end up frustrated and miserable the entire time. That's not fun! That's not even writing for pleasure anymore!

A fun little thing I've learned to do, or rather a mindset to adopt, is that not everything you write has to even be published! you don't have to post it on AO3, you don't have to share it on Discord with your friends, you can just write things down in your notes app never to see the light of day, because guess what? at the end of the day, that's still writing!! Even if it's not going to be getting any attention, it still gets your creative thoughts and jumbles out, and sometimes knowing that you're the only one who's ever going to read it takes a lot of pressure off, so you can make your story as angsty/fluffy/romantic/gorey/kinky/plotless/plotFULL/etc as your heart desires!

Another fun little thing is just...writing down headcanons! even one little sentence in a note app. "This character talks in their sleep." "This character hates chocolate." "This character secretly loves bed time stories." "This character wants to grow their hair out because their partner thinks loing hair is cute." "This character has never shed a single tear in their entire life." "This character wears sandals in the snow." Anything! any little blorbo thought that comes to mind. Because a lot of times fics will develop from these headcanons! Safe Haven itself came from "Ollie feels safe at the McGee house. He spends a lot of time there." It's a very simple, basic headcanon, and look and see how that played out! You could even argue that being true about canon! "Scratch is a terrible matchmaker." When he did everything he could to stop Molly and Ollie from getting together in Some-Ollie, all of his efforts brought them together. When he did everything he could to help them get together, Ollie panicked because he thought Molly hated him. One little thought can go a pretty long way!!

In short, no blorbo thoughts are wrong and incorrect. Write them down! Play with them! If you're not having fun with your blorbo, pick them up and place them somewhere else! put them in a situation you yourself have been in, put them in your workplace, put them in your favorite movie tropes! Writing is supposed to be fun!! If others don't like your writing and verbally tell you, then they're just being jerks who have fun wrong. It's all about you!!!!

A surprise Ari ask swoops in!! Of course I will answer. Aristide Lucarno is my Antivan Crow apostate mage (Dragon Age OC with many non-canonical traits, like being visibly half-elven)

2. What was your original concept for this character? How did playing them change that concept?

Original: (slaps them on the back) This rakishly charming blorbo can fit so much traumatic backstory in them.

After roleplaying them for a year and nine months: This rakishly charming blorbo has even more depth and nuance to their traumatic backstory than I originally planned, but also they are genuinely funny, caring, and also kind of simple and stupid in an intensely lovable way.

13. What are some motifs you associate with them? Did you intentionally bring in those motifs or did it happen over time?

Intentional from the outset: illusions, masks, mirrors, gold and violet

Happened over time: foxes, wisteria

14. What keeps them up at night?

Quite literal, in their case. Ari's an apostate who has never set foot inside any Circle, but they were trained by a Crow mage who grew up in the Antivan Circle and escaped as an adult. Maestro Octavian imposes as much of Circle disciple and traditions on Ari that he can, including a sort of version of a Harrowing that Ari underwent at the end of their Crow apprenticeship. Long story short, Ari did not defeat their assigned demon but made it out of the Fade anyway. Afterword, they regularly began encountering that same demon in their dreams. Ari's solution to this is to do drugs about it (in our headcanon, elfroot functions something like weed in real life) and Ari hasn't fallen asleep sober in years to avoid dreaming and running into the demon again.

35. When did they feel loneliest?

Well you see 🥺 They got picked up by the Crows after a magical accident in which they accidentally killed their closest friends, resulting in a You Can Never Go Back Home situation. So. Those first couple weeks in the manor owned by House Lucarno were pretty fucking lonely.

51. What element of their backstory are you proudest of?

I have a story about them that I'd really like to put on AO3 maybe one day. It recounts the "burning down a building in a magical accident" incident mentioned above, only it's told from the Crow master's POV who finds them. Ari's little child gang has broken into her house by pure bad luck, trying to do some petty sneak thieving. The most fun part to me is that Ari is not the kid who distinguishes themself first - it's written to make it seem like another kid is the protagonist, an older girl who's the leader of Ari's child-gang and Ari's best friend, Luisa. This Crow master basically overlooks Ari entirely because they don't speak up and don't distinguish themself in any way until, OH, they are magical and cause a massive house fire and are the sole survivor.
