The Snake's Taken a Spouse (Visual Novel)

Genre: Romance/Survival

This game is actually fairly fun all things considered and I enjoyed it. I think that some people might pass on this one because of the art, but honestly it reminds me a bit of DOL in some cases, especially with the Great Hawk and Shimil is adorable. This game is r18 though you can toggle off r18 things in the intro. You can find more at @gamesofcrimsin (which btw if you are reading this, I will literally redraw your sprites for you if you would like).

The story starts out with the MC walking around in the forest, only to stumble upon a naga person when hearing a scream. Their tail is stuck under a rock so the MC helps them out. Seeing as this is the nicest thing that someone has done to the snake person, they immediately tell the MC they want to marry them. A bit freaked out, the MC stumbles backwards and passes out, only to wake up in the snake person's den. This snake person promises that they will be able to love each other given time and goes out to get the MC a mattress to sleep on and a fire.

From then on, it runs mostly like a time management game where you can do anything from prepare food to nap, to wait, to try to escape. There are about six different endings that you can get through different means, but first I'll summarize Shimil's history as we know of.

The MC can ask about his name, introducing himself as Shimil. You can ask him about his species, the nagas. Shimil tells the MC that the nagas and humans used to live on the surface together, but the two hated each other, so the nagas of old hid underground so that humans could never bother them again. The MC asks why Shimil isn't underground, and Shimil states that he was banished because he couldn't do anything right and was burden. Comforting him will cause him to cry as he did try his best, but was never enough. The MC also finds a drawing on the wall and asks Shimil about it. Shimil carved it into the wall, trying to draw his mother and sister. Shimil talks about the two, how they were great at everything, how they were able to know what Shimil wanted or needed through body language and how strong they are. The MC picks up an object in the other corner, which Shimil frantically tells them to be careful with. When the MC asks Shimil about it, Shimil tells the MC that it's a toy that his parents got him, and that he loved it a lot. His sister gave it to him before he got exiled and even snuck in to grab his pickaxe. He reveals also that his dad died when he was younger, which is why he didn't draw him on the wall. This thought makes him cry, wanting to be able to draw them better.

There are a couple of endings, staying with him will make him happy, trying to escape may lead to failure. The MC can also dig footholds to climb out if timed correctly, or get rescued by a search time (though I couldn't get this ending because the timing is pretty finicky). Causing him to go out for the MC a lot makes Shimil go into a deeper sleep, thus being able to successfully kill him with the pickaxe, and finally, Shimil will kick the MC out if they break his toy (but it also breaks my heart).

I actually was more expecting a visual novel in the traditional sense because most of the entries seem to be of that style, so this was a nice change of pace. Like I said, it reminds me of the Great Hawk from Degrees of Lewdity, where you're sort of trapped with an animal creature that doesn't quite know what humans like or do but is doing their best to accommodate which is very enduring. Like the Great Hawk though, I do wish there were more interactions with Shimil besides what was given, though it's understandable since it was made for the game jam, so there probably wasn't a lot of time to implement a bunch of features (though I did see some of the notes in the script file for more endings.) If I were to make suggestions to add more features, I'd really like to hear more about Shimil's past or just get the chance for them to talk to each other about different things, such as Shimil sharing more about his culture or perhaps the MC sharing about their life as well. They could teach each other games or talk about other things that they might like. Just to really make that stockholm syndrome kick in. Of course, it would be great to do other things besides, eat, sleep, asking him to get things and having sex as well, since I'm sure it would get boring down there if it's all they could do. More endings are always great as well- I'll be honest, I just kept having sex with Shimil just to see if it would make a different ending or have different dialouge, but it would be pretty funny to see him have a proper reaction to that.

I'll be honest- Shimil is really cute. I really like the more sad and pathetic type yanderes that try their best and honestly listening to Shimil's backstory about how he was exiled and how he believes he's useless is really heartbreaking. It's also pretty sad that the nicest thing anyone has done for him was to save him from a giant boulder and even when trying to turn him down, he seems really happy that he's gotten so many compliments. He probably really misses his family seeing that all he has left are the things that he's gotten from home and a crude drawing, something that he often has to throw away (especially the pick axe) if the MC attempts to escape or hurt him. It made me really sad when the MC just broke his only toy since it was one of the last things he had left from them, so it's understandable he throws the MC out afterwards. Shimil is only really cruel when the MC is cruel to him and he honestly endures a lot of it, generally being more shy and reserved when the MC snaps back at him or attempts to murder him in his sleep which can lead to him raping the MC while the two try to sleep (though again, you have to be really cruel to him for this to happen generally). I can't really blame him since he doesn't have anyone and is just lonely, plus again, the MC is just outright cruel to him at this point when he's trying hard to provide food and other things for them.

I think overall, while the game is pretty good, the biggest drawback is likely the art. It's not... the worst that I've seen, but I can see why people might be turned away from it. There are some glitches in the code as well, sometimes with Shimil jumping up into the wrong position or some sort of error occurring, but they don't seem to be very big problems. Pretty much I feel that if the sprite art were improved, it would make the game a lot better since the design for him is pretty unique all things considered.

Overall, it's a pretty fun and short game. I hope to see more of Shimil in the future because I like his interactions and the history of nagas is actually pretty interesting and I hope there will be other endings for it. I'm gonna throw a bunch of redesigns for Shimil after this because I think he is fun to draw.

IM NOT DEAD I PROMISE!! To jump start this account, I'm bringing back an old series of mine, 'Spacetastic'. Spacetastic was a college project of mine (from 2016 if you can imagine that) in which I wanted to make Astronomy easier to understand. I love astronomy, but it can be VERY complicated sometimes. So i decided, that with the help of art and personified space objects, that I'd basically do what Hetalia did with countries, but with Space. And instead of history, take on astronomy. Of course, it never came to fruition simply due to time constraints and then life happens, but now I'm learning to manage time better and I intend to fully see this project through. Perhaps, if I can get more money soon, I'll even hire people to help me out. I want this project to really see the light (haha) and help more people be interested in astronomy as a whole.

So here we have @owlygem 's Sun dad with everyone's favorite old man Betelgeuse! This is a redraw of an older post (Which is still up btw!), I just felt like going back and re-doing this ^^. I hope y'all enjoy, and keep an eye out for more art from me!

Here to wish yall happy incredibly late windpower day, it was the 11th. I forgot. I'm such a great ship CEO I promise.

Usually I'd have a redraw of old windpower art to give you, but BC I'm injured I can't, sooooo here's a list of silly hcs I've come up with over time that I may or may not have posted already!!!!

Pixal will randomly braid Morros hair, usually when she's stressed or angry about something, Morro doesn't really care now but he used to be a little jumpy

Penguin pebbling but like times it by 100. (Penguin pebbling is the thing where you give your s/o random things like rocks, in their case ig it's more just shiny things and bits of metal)

Body doubling, like almost constantly. They can and will just sit in the same room together in silence doing their own thing for hours.

They blueprint stuff that would NEVER pass safety tests (stuff like turbo speed "monster bikes") mostly just for fun, very rarely will they actually build one, but when they do hooollllyyy shiiiiiit is it not safe to use. (Lloyd or Nya will sometimes join in if they're bored lol, but it's mainly a WP thing)

They don't use petnames often, they have a few for eachother, but around the others they'll usually just use each others "full names", mostly to confuse the others. (Eg: "Whatever, Primary interactive external assistant lifeform" or "Morrian I swear to the first Spinjitsu master-"

Beating the shit out of eachother (with love!!) Aka Morro is an idiot and allows Pixal to test weapons on him or tests new vehicles for her OR just sparring together because why not.

Pixal is the only one Morro sees as a higher being, and that is partially because he still doesn't understand technology at all and is fucking insane about how human she is.

15 Years of HTTYD! ANNIVERSARY POST!

tl;dr: Ive been in the fandom since the far off ancient year of 2007 so this is a brief reflection of all that

Posting this today on the Winter Solstice, an important day for the Vikings, seemed fitting. Expand for the full text (there's pictures too!)

In the Winter of 2007, my middle school English teacher took us to our weekly Thursday trip to the library. I'd check out any book with the word 'dragon' in the title. I came across How to Train your Dragon by Cressida Cowell and immediately checked it out. I became so obsessed with the book that I learned the hard way that you can only recheck out a book so many times. Thankfully, my parents had given me some money for Christmas and took me to Books-A-Million after the new year! I think the specific date was Jan 8th.

To my ecstatic delight, there was not one, but THREE BOOKS now! After buying them, we went to Cici's Pizza and I had to convince my parents to let me bring them inside. I promised them I would be careful not to get any pizza on them.

I carried those books around with me daily! They were always with me at school. They got scratches all over the covers but they were my friends so I always had them around. I made so many stories of my own through them.

I have this memory of my dad walking into my room while I was reading How to Speak Dragonese.

"You're reading that again?" he asked.

"Ye...."

"We need to get you some new books." was all he said.

It used to say Mew on the inside of the cover before I decided to put the date down instead. That was my first internet name from my ye olde Neopets days. I named myself and all my characters that because I was so bad with naming.

I came up with Mew (now Mewgull) as my first HTTYD OC! She was the an heir to a large kingdom and she turned into a wolf ( I was obsessed with Wolf's Rain and nu-metal AMVS ok? )Then came along her brothers, the Dreadful Drones and the Wolf Warriors as a whole, my first LGBT+ characters (that I can remember at least) and many many more. Mew became my first mascot for my art and eventually I made my own "fursona" (before I knew what that was) based off her.

Annnnnd of course, tons of fan art, animations and even a Doomfang fursuit head. Most of this stuff was lost to time but some I was able to keep! I'll be uploading what's left of my old artwork here soon! I plan to do some redraws as well! ^_^ Some are already on my ancient sarcophagus of a deviantART account

For memories and funnies: here's my Fishlegs cosplay for "Dress up as your favorite book character day" at school! I don't know if it's embarrassing or endearing but hey, man, it was 2012.

I made the helmet and the necklace myself! I kept the luck lobster claws for a long time but I guess I got rid of them. :( Maybe in the future I'll make another pair! And yes, that's my Horrowcow I'm holding! Thanks mom for takin the picture!

Anyway, if you stuck around this long, I sure do appreciate it. These were all some of the many core memories I had and I love talking about them. I'll probably have many more sentimental ramblings like this in the future (... Sure hope "the Dreadful Drone" doesn't take on a new meaning) and of course, my old art. I'm really happy with how well of a reception my art was got on here so far. Thank you all.

Little things I have done recently that have been really good for my art:

1) START A REFERENCE FOLDER

I have aphantasia, and I draw on mobile (aka with my silly shaky fingers) so for me having something to refer back to really helps. But even if you don't have aphantasia, you should REFERENCE, REFERENCE, REFERENCE. I promise professionals do it too! Its a great way to find new poses to try to try and copy, and stop your poses from all being stale or being anatomically incorrect.

2) START AN "ART I LIKE" FOLDER

It is SO motivating and SO inspiring to have art you like easily on hand! You can reference from it and try and copy it as a personal study: do you prefer yours or theirs? What did you do differently? Why? Saving it means you can come back to it and observe it; what techniques did they use? How could you mimic them? How do they create their intended effect?

3) REDRAW OLD ART

Of course, you shouldn't be doing this constantly, because you need time to draw other things! But it so so so validating and motivating to see how much you have improved. It helps you reflect on what you've changed and why. It also helps you pick up on stuff that still might need improvement ("ah man, that background is worse than I would draw now, but my one now still isn't as good as I'd like. Now I know my backgrounds need work!")

4) DOODLE SHEETS

Oh my god, i never used to do doodle sheets, but they are so much fun. It's a great way to get a load of art in without it being high pressure, and enabling you to focus on your lineart. And you get to be very silly with them, because if you mess up, it's only a small corner of the canvas, and it's not too hard to do it again! Not everything has to be a big super challenging piece. Have some fun.

5) CHALLENGE YOURSELF

That art idea that's too hard for you? Try it. You can always come back to it. You can keep coming back to it over a year if you like. There's no time limit. If you finish it and don't like it, it's not the end of the world. You can always redraw it when you've gotten to a higher skill level. But it's a good way to strengthen your artists muscles and force you to think about how to actually achieve big pieces. And hey, you might absolutely love it and have achieved something really cool! Sometimes art comes out better than you expect and you have to trust the process and you go wow I made this! Just don't ONLY make these or you risk burnout, give yourself time to do little doodles and fun other things as well!

And an obligatory P.S: If these aren't for you currently or at all, you don't have to do them! Art should be fun first and foremost. What works for me might not work for you. Do what makes you happy, no art has ever been improved by the artist being sad while making it. <3

This is my personal (fannish) tumblr for all my fandoms. I reblog other's posts sometimes but mostly I use this tumblr to post my own art and answer asks/fangirl. I am in my damn 30s, so minors be wary (asks about rated g works from minors are okay)

Why is some of your older fanart not posted here?

Weell here's the thing. My old tumblr josiemus-prime was flagged to death because of the nsfw art I'd posted on it. I'm trying not to let that happen to this one (hence the censoring of some art with links to the uncensored versions on ao3). In other cases… I'm just not very fond of some of my old art and for pure ~aesthetic~ reasons I don't want them here (but it's still viewable there!).

Can you restore the link to [missing fanart] on ao3?

Sadly, some of my old art links are dead and gone forever. But I didn't delete them! I have never purposefully deleted any fanart, the only reason they're gone is that I lost the original files, and hosted the images on sites that were unreliable or now defunct (like imageshack or tinypic). I am going to try to redraw some of them eventually though! I hate seeing the dead links :(

Could you help me find [fic example]?

I have answered this in more detail on the faq page of my recs site but the short of it is; you're welcome to ask me anything! But I can't promise I can help all that much with newer fic/themed recommendations. I've listed some other helpful links on my recs faq if you're interested.

Why is some of your fic under another name?

I made thewordsleep as a way to try out other fandoms, but I'm happy with those fics so I've listed them here. I haven't moved them all over to my main account because I'm told people are subscribed to that profile in case I update there.

Why haven't you answered my ask/message?

I'm so sorry! I definitely try to answer them all, but my inbox gets flooded with bots and tumblr eats old asks sometimes bc I'm bad at getting back to people in a timely manner. If you can be bothered, you can send duplicates of the same message so I can notice it faster ;_; sorry again, I want to be friend.

What programs/hardware do you use for your fanworks?

I use Adobe Photoshop 2020 and I've started using Krita for sketching (which is completely free to use). I draw using a Intous Wacom, and I use Sony Vegas 16.0 for vidding. My art and texture resources can be found right here, under resources.

In regards to using my fanworks as prompts or inspiration for fic, vid cons, or anything else:

Go for it! Whatever it's for, I really appreciate being told about it in a comment or message in advance. Links to whatever it's used for are also nice. You can contact me if there are any issues with downloading videos, or if there's expired links or some such, and I'll try to help out if I can!

Please don't:

Claim my work as your own! Please do not copy my works to another site (i.e wattpad/ffn/ao3/pinterest/goodreads). Also, do not link anything found here to the people they are about - actors, band members, writers, etc - unless I have stated in the post or tags that you can. I realise that these days the fourth wall is about as real as the Tooth Fairy, but I'd still like to keep some of those imaginary boundaries. Thank you!

my little baby wacom intuos that i’ve been using since 2014 is finally starting to give out on me (cord is getting frayed) and the idea of getting a new tablet is really...strange. partially bc now i have to seriously consider whether i want to get a really fancy one with a screen, but also bc it’s starting to settle in how crazy it is that i’ve been using this tablet since Twenty Fourteen. wanna see the first drawing i did on this tablet?

everything about this image is insane.

#the old art the fact that it's a middle school oc the fact that the canvas is 500 x 700 pixels the fact that i drew it at 10 am??#but mostly the 'i promise it won't break down after a month'#yeah girl. it did not break down after a month that's for sure #personal #it's like actually hard to decide if i should get a fancy one though #like..in theory...i think it'd be nice. and i could probably make good art on it #i always figured i'd get an ipad sometime but i don't need like. an ipad #i could drop $300 on a cheap nice screen tablet or i could decide i really don't need it and just get another $80 intuos #i guess i know i want a nicer one especially if it'll last me a long time and if i wanna keep (start?) doing comics #(i say keep bc the reason i'm using my intuos at this very moment is to work on comics class work)#so like it'd be a good investment #idk. mostly thinking about it makes me happy i did a 'first tablet drawing' thing in the first place #i've thought about redrawing it but as a picture it is just sougly i can not do it

(For anyone who's tagged me lately, thousand apologies once again! I'll get round to them eventually, I promise!!!)

It's well into the new year, so I'd better do that 2021 art roundup before it's too late!

This year I didn't do much art before I got my new tablet in September, and much of the art I did do was posted to my other account (@brennenacht ) because they were FFXIV-related. Still, I'm reposting them here, along with links to the original posts where relevant.

All in all, I still did more art than I thought I would, which is great!

(I'll make a separate post for fics, as 2021 was the first time I got really serious about fics.)

Onto the roundup!

So this was nowhere near one of the best works I did in 2021, but I still have a soft spot for it. It started as a screenshot redraw and ended as a standalone work. I might refine it one day.

If I had to pick a piece to represent my 2021 work, this would be it, hands down. For many personal reasons, but also because for once, it turned out way better than expected, considering it was a redraw of an old wip.

So this was for a personal project, reimagining the leaders of my FFXIV FC as game bosses. It was fun, but I ran out of time before I could colour it. Still a striking piece though, and one that I'm pretty proud of.

My attempt at a semi-realistic depiction of Tsunemori Akane. It was a lot harder than I expected. I used to do realism more before I got into anime, and now I'm finding it hard to switch back.

Last but not least, a little something different. I picked up dinosaur painting this year thanks to my kiddo's obsession with all things dino, and slowly finding out I'm really not too bad at it. I thought I had a post with a process vid but I can't find it now. Oh well.

Anyway, that's my art roundup for 2021! Thanks for reading this far, and here's hoping 2022 will bring more and better art.

I know it's silly to say but it was such happy moment for me when I stumbled upon your blog again. I've been a fan of your work for a long time. I'm a year 12 highschool student in Australia, and I remember drawing your comic art in a sketch book when I was in year 7 or 8. It's not my proudest moment so to speak and I'm sorry if that upsets you now, but I was a kid back then and didn't know much about what art theft was or credit etc. (1/2)

I'd always lose your blog and couldn't find you again for a long time. I left Tumblr since it took toll on my mental health, but I had just gotten it again a month ago, and as I was scrolling through blogs to follow, I saw yours and thought to myself "Wait, is that who I think it is?" You're still such a talented artist and I'm glad I can follow you again and see what you post! Although I promise to not do what I did as a kid haha. I want to thank you for making me the artist I am today! (2/2)

Another old art redraw! I made the original (under the cut) for @returnsandreturns back in 2018 for her fic "(love is like a) heat wave." I still love this fic and weatherman Foggy just as a concept and I'm really happy with how this turned out 💕

Calling it done on the redo of this 2019 Leverage piece (under the cut) because I simply do not have the patience to try and Actually figure out the lighting lmao

Since this was originally done for a reverse bang, my own story is intentionally pretty vague: I just wanted to have Parker at the center of some hurt/comfort during a Bad Night (nightmares or illness or trauma whatever) and this is the lead in moment of Eliot waking up and realizing something’s wrong.
